Hot Fuss features eleven nuggets of reel-you-in storytelling genius and musical nectar. These eleven tracks span from the "very Vegas - like Ziggy came to town" first proper single release "Somebody Told Me";"Mr Brightside" - a tale of jealousy that depicts that moment in a relationship when you realize that your other half might be playing away and this thought takes up residence in your psyche feeding the worst fears and visualisations your imagination can then throw at you. You'll find two-thirds of a murder trilogy in "Midnight Show", which starts off harking back to "Lipgloss" before veering into far darker territory than old Jarvis would ever have flirted with, in Pulp days at least, and "Jenny". These two are connected by the story of a murder of a girl by her jealous boyfriend. The first part of the trilogy, "Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf", will, you can be sure, make an appearance at some point in the future. It's a deliciously ambitious series that! belies the band's tender years. Elsewhere, meanwhile: "On Top" celebrates where Brandon feels the band is at, while stalker's tale "Andy You're A Star" and "All These Things That I've Done," saw Flowers realise his dream of using a gospel choir in their recordings.

Yes, I do play it an awful lot and I'm not afraid to say so. This has so many great tracks on it; I really can't think of one I don't like, though I do have my favorites. Pop it in and it will help you get your work done in the home or yard. I really need to order their next album as well, Keep it up, Brandon and boys.

A Lovely Journey.......2007-06-02

I have to admit, when I first heard "Mr. Brightside" back in 2004 I wrote these guys off as new wave copycats devoid of their own creative force. Boy was I EVER wrong!!! Fast forward 3 years later. After hearing "Read My Mind" from their "Sam's Town" album and instantly falling in love with it, I went back, gave this album a fair listen from top to bottom and I was blown away. Sure, the influence of 80's new wave with it's blasting bass lines and sonic-filled synthesizers are there, but they've pulled off in such a way that makes this offering fresh without giving the listener a nostalgia hangover. The playing by the band is tight, groovy, and as catchy as an STD in Africa (okay, bad analogy but you get my drift). Brandon Flowers' voice is awesome in the weirdest way. It's pitchy, squeamish and loud at times, but somehow you fall in love with it. Overall, I believe that this album should be considered a modern day classic. Rock on Killers!

Loveeee me some killlers.......2007-05-31

I will admit that i do like Sams Town better.But none the less this album is still absolutey fabolous.The Killers and Coldplay are the only 2 bands albums where i can listen to there albums without skipping songs.This band is just so fantasic in so many differnt ways and for all you people who think that they are just another average band i seriously think that is so false.Other than Franz Ferindad i really dont know any other band like The Killers.And even Franz doesn't really stand up to The Killers.Also these guys are mind blowing live.I've recentyl attended there concert in Atlanta and it was the best show i've been to.I will be a killers fan for a long long time and there cd's will never leave my car cd player lol

We needed this group to form and make this music.

I haven't gotten this excited about a new band in quite a while.

The Killers are destined to eventually be grouped with music greats like The Smiths, The Cure, REM, U2, Nirvana, and Coldplay in the near future.
This debut CD guarantees that!

Very original, fun and catchy - this CD is one of my favorites - I highly recommend it.

I loved this CD!!! I know there are like 5 different versions of this album, and I chose this because it covers the songs I like, it's not too expensive and it arrived just in time for me to listen it over and over again before the concert. It's great, it is the nearest to collector's edition, without all the fuzz of searching.

soldiers of glam.......2006-12-31

Catchy, electrifying tunes that take the word "derivative" to all time highs. This band proudly wears its influences on its sleeves while delivering a fresh sound and brings the energy to new levels. The melodies are hypnotic and the vocalist makes the best of his abilities. They really seem to have striven to be good on every song on this release, which proves refreshing. Their determination was worth it.

The work is high energy and pleasantly addictive!

Best Album of 2004.......2006-12-15

This album was ripe with hits and remains in the CD changer in my car to this day. The Killers melded new wave, alternative, and rock influences and released quite possibly one of the best first albums anyone has seen in a at least a decade. There are a few songs on the album that i'm not hugely fond of, but the strengths more than overshadow the few weaker parts, and even the songs I skip are by no means terrible. Buying the import with these three bonus tracks and a bonus DVD with a few music videos on it was well worth it to me, and i'm glad I bought it over the lower priced regular version.

Here's my track by track analysis, with my score in parenthesis, 5 being the highest, 1 the lowest:

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine (5) - Terrific opener, driving rhythms, great chorus.

Mr. Brightside (5) - Probably the most recognized, if not overplayed track on the album, but with good reason, another driving, strong vocals.

Smile Like You Mean It (5) - Favorite song on the album, haunting lyrics, extraordinary use of guitars and synth, great percussion work, especially on cymbals. I don't think i'll ever get tired of this song.

Somebody Told Me (5) - Another driving rock song. Well-made for radio.

All These Things I've Done (5) - Yes, it's true that the line "I've got soul but i'm not a soldier" isn't the best writing in history, but the guitar and rhythm carry it, with good vocal variety. The video on the DVD of this song is pretty damned good as well.

Andy, You're a Star (3) - Mediocre at best, it's a change of pace from the rest of the album up until this point to be sure, but seems overly reptitive. It's either a 2 or 3 but is at a 3 at this point, though that might be overly generous.

On Top (5) - Good use of synth, could have been overdone but luckily they knew where to pull back with it and focus on the lyrics. Flowers' voice seems louder on this song than on previous tracks, and it helps to carry the tune.

Change Your Mind (5) - I was thrilled to see this song used in many of the trailers for 'the movie "Thank You For Smoking' earlier this year, as it's a neat song. The synth approaches borderline over the top, but the vocals are so wonderful, that it doesn't overpower. This is probably my third favorite on the disc, if not a close second.

Believe Me Natalie (5) - Carried by a heavy bassline, it's another storytelling type song, not a bad song, but nothing legendary. It's barely a 5 in my book, it's a good song but might score lower if compared to other Killers songs only. I do however score basing songs against other music of similiar genre, so it remains a 5.

Midnight Show (4) - Not a bad song, but the vocals seem to be lacking, and get lost in the background it seems at times.

Everything Will Be Alright (3) - I'm not sure how this song is even at 3 stars, it's a change of pace, but seems like a bad way to end an album, and this is where it did end on the normal version of the disc. It's not terrible, but probably the weakest track on the album. Could have been better if the vocals were done differently, I liked the rhythm, just hated the delivery.

Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll (5) - First of three bonus tracks, and is possibly my second favorite song. It's catchy as all getout, and Flowers' seems to be right on target with the vocal delivery and range. Great guitar work, and the bassline was done perfectly. Bonus points for the tambourine hit in the first verse as well, very nice.

The Ballad of Michael Valentine (5) - Solid tune, it has a few changes throughout of all the different instruments. Lots of cymbals at some points, but gets the job done.

Under the Gun (5) - Weakest of the 3 bonus tracks but still a good tune, though short. More substance would do it some good. Not the worst song they could have picked to end the album (see above).

Overall, this is a strong buy, and a worthy addition to anyone's collection that enjoys this genre of music.

Magnum Opus.......2006-11-29

Seldom does an album come along where every song is worth listening to repeatedly. Hot Fuss is one of those rare exceptions. Whether a listener will enjoy the music is a matter of personal preference. But if you do like the Killers, you certainly like the majority of songs on this album.

Like most performers, The Killers produce songs that have an acquired taste. Over time, you will find more and more of the songs on Hot Fuss appealing. In many cases, the songs have a buildup similar to those of Depeche Mode, where there is a great deal of anticipation during the escalating tempo. I find songs like "All These Things That I've Done" excellent for hardcore weightlifting because of this buildup.

While their genre hard to describe, the Killers sound similar to the Stokes with a little Cure, Depeche Mode and the Clash mixed in. Sublime [not the group Sublime, but Webster's definition] in many circumstances, there are coherent messages behind many of the songs on Hot Fuss. Others are just fund to listen to. Though, from my perspective, the verse "I wanna shine on in the hearts of men" in the "All These Things That I've Done" is simply inspiring.

A Perfect CD.......2007-05-16

I cannot begin to tell you how great this cd is. But if you are looking at this you already know that. What you do need to know is the extra cost for the Deluxe Tour Edition is well worth it. The hardcore fans will froth at the addition of the videos but which really makes the cd for all levels of fandom is the addition of three excellent songs. Glamorous Indie Rock n Roll is a superb b side that should have made the final cut to the original album. These extra features are not just addons they really feal as though they are apart of the album flow.

While many groups and bands make a trademark for being grungy, rebellious, gothic-rock, or just plain pop/rock then comes a new world of music and style; The Killers! The different projection of sound, lyrical quality, and looks are sure to attract many. When listening to this album, all the songs have something interesting to offer the average rock music lover. The added bonus songs for this Tour Edition along with the added DVD disc, obi-strip, and lyrics make this a must for die-hard fans!

There are varying styles that include all types of instruments from drums, synthesizers, to electric guitars, and bass. Most of the songs have little stories that range from love, imaginations, and fantasies to dark scenarios, and much drama! My personal top favorite songs are: SOMEBODY TOLD ME for the sound and lyrics, MR. BRIGHTSIDE for the drama and style, MIDNIGHT SHOW for the references to love, and UNDER THE GUN for the passionate unattainable romance!

If you would like to know if the bonus tracks are worth the purchase, I can say they do make a difference. While GLAMOROUS INDIE ROCK & ROLL has less popularity, the other 2 songs are quite complimentary to the album. THE BALLAD OF MICHAEL VALENTINE tells a tale of traveling to many places and comparing the moments to the buzz of Marlon Brando, the buzz of Greta Garbo and later how he ends up: "With your new suit and your black tie, hold on, you're just a gambling man...I broke to the right, and caught your eye, shut your mouth and wave goodbye...I ain't gonna let you rain on this parade." This has the typical mystery, drama, and glamour to capture interest along great sounding vocals and music. The favorite among many would be the added bonus track UNDER THE GUN. It is quite enchanting and glamorous in making the themes to be quite dramatic. Women can be so hard to predict and this song displays how the guy feels that only the girl can set him free. As the music intensifies he yells, "Because Heaven sends, and Heaven takes...keeps him tied up to a dream and only she can set him free and then he says to me...kill me now [x4]." There are plenty of drums, fast paced beats, and great catchy hooks. He mentions James Dean in the rain.

If you are not sure which version to buy I'd suggest you hear the samples on the regular one first and then get this one if you like their sound. And if you like what you heard, then you will love the extras found on this Tour Edition!

I remember the first time I heard this cd. Every song sounded like a song I heard 100 times before, but was fresh and new.
The Killers are a band that will be around for awhile. If you never heard of them pick this one up for a guaranteed favorite.
It won't leave you cd for a long time.

The Killers are the best! If I had to pick a favorite album, this would be it. I'm actually a big Potter fan and found out about them through Dan Radcliffe (actor of Harry). He was always talking about them, so I decided to give it a try and fell in love with it. lol!

KILLER single-laden debut!.......2005-06-07

The Killers sound like a lot of great British synth rock bands from the 80s; The Cure, Blur, but most of all like Duran Duran! Amazing to find out that they are actually a US band.

`Somebody told me' is the best song Duran Duran never recorded. Wow! It features some fierce scratching guitar and some really great vocals, all of which builds up to a very catchy disco chorus with lyrics like `somebody told me/you had a boyfriend/looks like a girlfriend..' similar to the gender bending referencing of Franz Ferdinand.

In a similar vein is `Midnight hour', another highly infective rock/dance number.

Opening track `Jenny was a friend of mine' starts off with some helicopter sound effects, great dance beats kick in, synths blazing and swirling guitars, and then the best Duran Duran vocal impression since, well Duran Duran! Brilliant.

`Mr Brightside' is an upbeat rocker sounding very much like Blur; half spoken lyrics and an almost mumbled but great chorus.

`Smile like you mean it' features some twilight zone-like sound effects and a sing-a-long chorus, similar vocally to The Cure.

`All these things that I've done' starts off a vaguely Beatles-ish ballad, which kicks into a great rocker with an almost choir-like segment.

`Andy you're a star' is a sluggish sounding rocker, with some Cure like vocals again.

All these Blur/Duran/Cure etc influences should have been cloying and annoying but what saves the day is the fact that the songs are GREAT!

Next influence channeled is Oasis on `Glamorous indie rock and roll' which starts off gentle and features semi shouted vocals and a killer chorus.

`On top' is another Durannie influenced great pop/rock song.

All in all, a great debut, packed with tonnes of potential singles.

Something we've needed for a long time........2005-03-29

Okay the only dif between the UK and the US versions is 1 song got swapped (and the one on the UK version is waaay better), but that's the version I've got so that's the version I'm reviewing.

That being said, this is a great album. The Killers are no doubt going to be labelled as another "retro" band. Let me just say that I'm really tired of this whole "retro" label. Just because a new band actually has a melody instead of a dull repetition of over-over-overdiven minor chords (ahem...Godsmack), sings instead of growling like a dorky 3rd grade kid trying to scare his little sister on Halloween (ahem...Slipknot), and sings about things us normal human types can relate too instead of moaning and wailing about how much they hate being rich and successful (shem...Korn), doesn't mean they're ripping off "older" music.

True, The Killers use the same sort of synth-driven hooks that Duran Duran used, but did Duran Duran ever bust out the guitars like "Mr. Brightside"? True, The Killers throw in a good dose of melancholy-English-croonery that might remind you of Morrisey (if you allow yourself to be reminded of that sort of thing), but would Morrisey have made you want to just get up and bounce around in the middle of your bedroom like "Somebody Told Me" does?

The Killers--just like a lot of other so-called-retro, may have their roots in something a little more recent than whoever's-on-the-cover-of-Blender-magazine-this-week, but face it, they're a new band and overall a new sound.

And by Jove it's a good sound indeed. I had more fun listening to this album the *first* time than I did listening to one song by most "New and Innovative bands" (ahem...Linkin Park...you guys really suck...quit now...stop selling reptition to the kids, they get enough of it from pop/rap/whatever as it is, they don't need it from ignored-computer-nerds posing as a rock n roll band).

So, the lesson today, kids, is that if somebody is getting labelled as "retro", it probably means they are playing REAL music (with notes, not just an expensive effects rig plugged out of a guitar that they really don't know how to play), and it would do your poor MTV-abused brain some good to give 'em a listen.

I bought this album for the single track "Indie Rock and Roll" and it's worth it. I own the US version and it's great as well but I had to have that song.

Saw The Killers in concert in Ottawa, Canada and they were great. I'm looking forward to a lot of great albums from this band.

So there's only one difference... So? It's still a good CD, and Indie Rock & Roll is an awesome song. Of course, if you have the US version, don't buy it unless you're a completist (like me)

... that the only thing different on this version and the original US version is ONE SONG. Glamourous Indie Rock & Roll replaced Change Your Mind. That's all.
