Who said 80s pop music never parted the Iron Curtain? T.A.T.U., the photogenic duo of Russian divas previously best known in the west for their supposed lesbianism and a risqué video for their hit "All The Things She Said," prove that the lessons of early-80s MTV weren't lost on the children of the former Soviet empire with "Dangerous and Moving." A comeback album of sorts in which the duo--Lena Katrina and Julia Volkova--has dropped the lesbian pretense (though not the coyly ambiguous lyrics), "Dangerous and Moving" is choc full of keyboard hooks that Flock of Seagulls would have been proud to claim, albeit with updated production values that place them closer to Avril Lavigne than to Tiffany. Grabbing some crunchy guitar riffs from Nirvana ("Loves Me Not"), some trippy flourishes a la Massive Attack ("Sacrifice") and a variety pack of punchy drum loops, the girls (or their production team anyway, which includes Trevor Horn and Dave Stewart on a track each) bid for Western pop superstardom yet again with what amounts to a sonic pastiche of the last 20 or so years of Top 40 radio. Much of this turns out to be a surprisingly guilt-free pleasure though, due mostly to the fact that the duo can generally sing better than most of their Western teen pop contemporaries, which helps songs like "Craving (I Only Want What I Can’t Have)" and "All About Us" lodge themselves in your head and stay there after only one listen. --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars Second album.......2007-02-06

Its even better than their first, i have both and the original Russian version of their first album.
I have all four singles, loads of posters and their in my top ten friends on myspace.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch!.......2007-02-05

This is a great CD! The songwriting is beautiful, and the production of the CD is incredible. I've never had a favorite CD by a teen artist before, that is until now. This music is a thousand miles from pop bubble gum (that most teen artists make). Even the lyrics of these songs are meaningful and mature. Forget whatever expectations you had from the reputation of these two singers, because this CD breaks them all. Perhaps that's why the CD hasnt been so popular, because a lot of people expected the same thing as last time. A CD along with sexy videos of two young girls clininging, and touching each other in revealing or lack of clothes (suggesting lesbian appeal). The girls with great producers and songs make a very mature and high level CD. So many gems here, uptempo songs, gorgeous ballads, and even the russian song Obezyanka Hol is very moving. The music creates a great mood and strong emotional chord that really lets you feel the music deep inside you. I hear T.A.T.U will still carry on in 2007 with more concert appearances and another new CD later in the year. But I have to say, I doubt they will ever top this. Superb!!!! But I like the first CD as well, just not as much as Dangerous & Moving, and I will be buying the new one, can't wait!

4 out of 5 stars Lesbian Bubblegum Pop.......2007-01-09

An interesting concept, while "Lesbian Bubblegum Pop" sounds like a joke it actually takes elements of electronic dance, bubblegum pop, the love songs of the mid 1960's, and an unwillingness to be shoehorned into an easy to identify box-- then combines it into easy listening. In spite of the age and sexual/political orientation of the artists it crosses over to being generally entertaining, and feels comfortable to many in their fifties as well, evoking memories of the good old days.

5 out of 5 stars Translations..........2006-11-07

This album was not the greatest, in my opinion, anyways. But there were a few songs that I instantly loved, like "Craving", "All About Us" and "Obizienka (or 'Obizyanka') Nol." Most people don't even understand what that song means (because it's completely in Russian), but the lyrics in it stand out the most in the album.
The title translates to "Little Monkey Zero," which sounds odd to most people. But if you were to look up the translations, it would make sense. Because it is about monkeys being in love in like a Zoo, and being imprisoned (their cages), trying to make each other happy while everyone outside the "prisons" love freely. The sound of the song fits the lyrics perfectly. Truly wonderful.
I recommend listening to the whole album, but "Obizienka Nol" is the best track out of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Who Cares About Lesbians?.......2006-11-07

I just picked up a copy of this album after listening to a few select tracks online, and I have to say, wow.

I am honest about the fact that I am a snob when it comes to music, don't even ask my opinion on the current state of the music industry, however, this album is phoenominal. High quality production value, lyrics that don't make you feel dumber for listening to. I normally don't listen to "pop" music, especailly when anyone is around, but this is one of those albums you can play around your friends and not have to either defend it, or worry about your buddies ripping on you. This is one of those rare gems that you dont have to be embarrassed about playing in public.

These chicks can wail!

Album Description

Moving Units' hotly anticipated 2004 debut full-length Dangerous Dreams is filled with the tension and hopes associated with the beginning of a musical revolution. Their proto-post-punk sound from 2003's self-titled E.P. invited comparisons to the Rapture and Yeah Yeah Yeahs - the spirit of Dangerous Dreams invokes the wonder and excitement of the first time you heard the Pixies' discordant melodies or the Minutemen's anti-establishment punk aesthetic. Moving Units' unique sound is truly in a class of its own, and their live show has inspired nothing short of fanaticism and wild abandon, described by Nylon magazine as "...a euphorically smutty, joyfully disenfranchised, danceable call to arms."

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive Indie.......2006-03-01

This is an extremely repetitive CD. Patterns, riffs, and their style is completely repeated on every song. Don't get me wrong, every song is incredible. From opener Emancipation with descending guitar patterns, and higher octaves with vocal melodies with striking catchy lyrics saying "I'm Your Slave" you realize this band has some incredible talent with such simple riffs. The record presents these songs nearly like the sound you would hear at their live show.

Overall, great sound, some melodies that will never be forgotten, and a throwback style that this group's fans can enjoy for the time being. Not original I'll give you that but amazing 80's and funk-disco basslines. Triplet pattern in many songs, including their old EP. It's become the "Moving Units Bassline." Excluding a few tracks near the end of the album, all the songs are dancy but not extremely catchy. Killer/Lover sounds like an ambient dark night on drugs. They grow on you eventually because their guitar is raw, just like The Rapture and although Blake isn't the best singer in the world, his vocals that were recorded (probably after 300 takes) sound perfect on the album.

4 out of 5 stars Moving in a Different Direction.......2006-02-18

I picked up this album after I heard that they were coming to Des Moines to open up for one of my all time favorite bands, Nine Inch Nails. I figured, hey, Trent has a good ear for musical talent, after finding great talent out there like Manson, Prick, and Pig, so how could he go wrong with Moving Units? What an unusual pick, if you ask me. This band seems like a new wave ska band that was somehow transported to the present time from the eighties. Not that that is a bad thing. They have really catchy hooks, and after a couple of listening, they really grow on you. Not my favorite band by far, but definately not a bad one either. Spectacular tracks on the album include "Anyone and Scabs". Give it a listen. They just might grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars Dangerous Dreams - Moving Units.......2005-08-02

i guess you could put this band into the retro-rock phase that's taking over right now but i don't want to.
even though, moving units have some of that retro-rock flavor, they also surprise you with their bass lines and songs that could be played in clubs. all in all, after listening to their EP (which is very good as well!) this is a CD that does not disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars yeah yeah!...(no.).......2005-05-31

With a vocal delivery full to the bursting point with "ah ah ah"s (recalling none other than the Count from Sesame Street), overly busy basslines, and overt influences-du-jour, this album drags and disappoints. Too bad, "Between Us and Them" is a catchy tune -- it might even snare you into buying this CD like it did me. It will gather dust on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2005-05-07

Good CD. "Between Us and Them" is a great song, and I disagree with the reviews that this just copies the other NY dance-punk bands. I think it's a lot better than the Rapture and so on, and it's more catchy and less fake-funky. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoy it.

      5 out of 5 stars t.A.T.u does it again!.......2007-03-20

I first became a fan of t.A.T.u while in England in 2003. Their first cd "200 KM in the wrong lane" was a huge sucess. Then, after much drama and bad rap from the media a second cd came along. Although the girls are as big as they used to be (in the US of course...other countries are still into t.A.T.u) "Dangerous and Moving" is a must for fans. I like the sound of this cd. While it has the amazing voices of Lena & Julia the music is more lively I think.
