Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you've just crept into someone's bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia's voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There's certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener "Rewrite" works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while "Sunday" turns "Strawberry Fields" harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. "Sweet Potato" sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but "Bully", a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. --Paul Tierney

4 out of 5 stars Great to chill out to.......2007-07-21

I am vaguely familiar with the musical stylings of Sia. I have heard some of her collaborations with the downtempo duo Zero 7. She was the only good thing that I liked about Zero 7 whose music I find rather dreary and uninspiring. I recently came across Sia's 2006 re-release of her album COLOUR THE SMALL ONE. I thought I would check it out. I have to say that I definitely like her solo work than any fo the stuff she has done with Zero 7. Her music is a pleasant mix of pop, folk, and trip hop music, perfect music to listen to while enjoying a cup of coffee while reading the morning paper. The only flaw with her music is that it sounds pretty much the same like her stuff with Zero 7. Still I find her solo music more pleasant to listen to. I really like the delicate melodies and her fragile vocals on songs like "Re-write" and "Breathe Me". The one song I really wasn't too fond of is "Sweet Potato" because of the melody (or lack thereof) and Sia's voice which sounds out of tune. The remixes were alright but I could have lived without them all the same. For all its minor flaws, COLOUR THE SMALL ONE is a very good chillout cd, much better than any Zero 7 cd IMO.

4 out of 5 stars New mold of songwriting.......2007-05-08

I'm docking a star for 2 tracks where Sia tries to sing like Nelly Furtado. Otherwise, a pretty great album for the following tracks at the very least:

Rewrite
Sunday
Breathe Me(wow)
The Bully
Don't Bring Me Down

What some people are missing about Sia is that she doesn't belt out the showtunes like Barbara Streisand, and that was NEVER the point! Sia follows directly in the line of intense, moody confessional singer-songwriters like Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan. IT's about baring her soul to the audience, and she definitely does it here to great effect.

Also to a previous reviewer who said that Sia ripped off Tori Amos in "Breate Me", well that's some neat trick to be able to sing write and sing like that, no? Besides, Tori never wrote such straightforward lyrics, the Queen of Obtuseness.

5 out of 5 stars Her name drew me in first.......2007-04-05

I went to the store to buy a Zero 7 CD. The clerk asked me if I was familiar with the female singer on the CD named Sia. I looked at him with a smile and asked "Who?".He repeated her name. I was smiling because her name sounds exactly like what my sisters call me, although my name is Cecelia. It is written "Ceya" when they've written their version of my name. Needless to say to all who are reading this: THE GIRL AIN'T PLAYIN'!! She struck me like an open-hand slap when I heard her sing "You don't know me...." on the opening of REWRITE. I am a Black 46yr old female who may have lived every song on the CD. 'SUNDAY' has a rolling, lazy funk about it. 'NUMB' ain't lyin'....'THE CHURCH OF WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW' has Sia pleading "Go away yesterday" as if they're her last words. I just fell in love with her. I consider her a Master Wordsmith. She is a voice I find myself having to hear every day since buying this CD. She speaks to me. Oh! and I can't forget those fantabulous musicians who are doing a hellified job crafting those melodies. This Ceya LOVES Sia!!!

3 out of 5 stars A little slow and boring, but once known, worth the time........2007-04-02

Sia is hard to get attached to. Her music is slow, and not all that original. Her voice is what drew me in on the single, Sunday, but on most of her other tracks, she doesn't stretch it, and it gets kind of boring. On the whole though, once you get used to the melody (if they have one) of the songs, it becomes comforting to hear them. Almost like going home after working all day.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, acoustic-esque style with hints of Dido and jazz/blues overtones.......2007-03-22

Very satisfying purchase. "Colour the Small One" has a simple, near-acoustic rock style which, along with Sia's vocals, are reminiscent of Dido's "Life for Rent" and include many jazz and blues overtones. Guitar, brass instruments, synth organ, and even the xylophone are tastefully blended with both fast and slow percussion in amounts that are often quite complex, yet carefully avoid the "noise rock" effect. Unlike Dido, the lyrical content avoids any edgy or potentially offensive territory, making this album safe for any casual listening audience. Presently lingering near the top of my playlist rotation.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing vocals over dreamy backdrops. A must for trip-hop/down tempo fans........2007-02-23

First, I just have to give SIA credit for being so unique. In a genre where vocals are wispy and drawn out and dramatic, she manages all these feats while still doing it her way. At times soulfoul and at times etheral, you definitely wont feel like you're listening to a female vocalist you've heard before. I hate to say it, but I enjoy SIA's solo album more than her work with ZERO 7. Its a great album to listen to while driving, studying, cooking, for a get-together, or just to "chill" out. But not as ambient as the others in her genre, so it wont put you to sleep. I dont skip though any of the songs which is always, to me, the sign of a well produced album. We all know and love the song "breathe me". Moving, powerful lyrics. Featured on "six feet under" and as the preview song for "freedom writers". But the best song on the album, hands down, is MOON. I love love love this song. I feel like I'm floating when I listen and it literally transcends. The only pity is that I didn't find out about this album sooner. Get it. Truely worth the two lattes, half tank of gas, or 3 packs of American Spirits. Either way you analyze the cost its so WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2007-01-11

I highly recommend this CD. All the songs are very good and she has an amazing voice.

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2006-05-26

I must have heard this album in that very book store where the other reviewer (the one who hated the album) works. :-) I was not really there to listen to music, but in half an hour that I was there, I caught myself liking what I was hearing at least 2 or 3 times. This doesn't happen very often, so I asked what the album was and listened to it on Napster when I got home. I must admit I didn't purchase the whole album. In fact, the only tracks I did end up purchasing are the ones that noone seems to mention - Don't bring me down, The Church of What's happening now, Natale's song, Where I belong.
I must agree that she doesn't articulate at all and lyrics ARE very hard to understand most of the time. But hey - how can you get annoyed by lyrics if you can't understand them, right? :-) I'm still planning on listening to the songs while looking at lyrics in the nearest future, in the meantime, I can't really criticize or embrace them. However, I find her melodies to be absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing, the best I've heard in a long while, and to me that often matters more than highly philosophical lyrics (and how often do we see those, anyway - from what I can understand of her lyrics, they aren't any less or more pretentious than 90% of what we hear on the radio these days?).
I also don't find anything annoying about her voice (her lack of articulation aside - but that seems to be the trend for a long of singers these days). I think it works very well to create a mood.
Wouldn't buy the album for $20 or so at the store simply because I don't find all tracks equally appealing (thus, the 4 stars), but those that I like, I definitely like a lot and enjoy listening to often.

4 out of 5 stars much more than "Breathe Me".......2006-05-07

I've been listening to this album since its initial UK release, and it has yet to wear out on me. Sia's music is not for everyone; you must listen to the songs carefully to appreciate the melodies. But once grasped, these melodies are so exquisite and subtly layered that it is difficult to tire of them. The songs are understated, the vocals vulnerable with emotion, and compositions, sumptuous. What baffles me is all the attention being given to "Breathe Me", as if the rest of the album is secondary. I do not believe this to be the case at all. While "Breathe Me" is a good song, there are many others on the album that surpass it, such as "Sweet Potatoe", "Sunday", "Moon", and "Numb". This is a beautiful collection of original songs worthy of attention.

5 out of 5 stars Great Albulm.......2006-04-19

So my friend calls me up and asks me if I want to see Sia in concert. I had never heard of her before, but why not? The concert was great, and afterward i went out and bought the albulm. Some people complain about Sia's voice...but honestly what makes her voice so good is that its different from every other person out there. Very soft, melodic, and light. The entire albulm is very, chill and great to listen to anytime. Get this albulm, you won't be dissapointed.

Album Description

Originally touted as an R&B artist Australian born Sia opts for the adult contemporary pop sound on her second album release 'Colour The Small One'. The album features a mix of sparse electro based ballads & wispy trip-hop sounding tracks which has had her already compared to fellow female solo artist Dido. This UK edition of the album features 12 tracks including the single 'Don't Bring Me Down', as well as the bonus track 'Butterflies'. Go Beat! 2004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-06-23

You always feel a little behind-the-pack when you first hear an album 2 years after it's intial release. Concordantly, you feel like a bigger tool when you review an album 2 years after it's initial release. That, however, is precisely what I am doing. In my defense, the album wasn't released in the United States until January 10, 2006. I think there's a good 4 month window where it is appropriate to review a piece of work and I generally follow that rule of thumb. So, seeing as how I have never been outside of the United States of America, I finde it more than appropriate to review Sia's 2004 album "Colour the Small One."

Disclaimers aside, this is a beautiful album. Being, as the Europeans would say, a narrow-minded American, you have probably never become acquainted with Sia, at least in the personal sense. Fans of the group Zero 7 can immediately distinguish her voice as a frequent guest vocalist for the group, including the song "In the Waiting Line" from the Garden State soundtrack. Her voice is soft, intimate, and painful. A random assortment of adjectives, yes, but it accurately depicts the heart and soul of this album.

At first listen, you'll love it. This is not a stretch. But listen to it again, focus on the lyrics and you'll be entering Sia's world, where her most intimate thoughts and emotions are revealed. It's a refreshing experience, but at the same time, a frightening one. So rarely does an artist open up and become frank with her audience. It's as if Fiona Apple softened her voice and made an entire album of the song "Parting Gift."

Sia begins the album by proclaiming "You don't know me/You can't hold me/I'll slip through your hands/I am one single grain of sand." However, by the end of the album you'll feel as if you know her better than herself, and in truth, you just might. Indeed, with tracks like "Natale's Song," it's hard not to feel like you've known this girl for years ("She barely speaks/But I hear her breathing/That's all I need...Momentarily, she brings peace to me").

"Colour the Small One" is best summed up as Sia beautifully sings "I can't detach from the past and all of the pain/I need to learn, start from scratch begin again." As you listen to this album you realize what a cathartic experience this must have been for the artist. Though she makes herself immensly vulnerable, it is particularly comforting to know that when it's all said and done, she has grown as a person and as an artist. As listeners, we can only thank her for letting us all partake in that experience.

Recommended for fans of Tori Amos and Feist. Don't pass up this album.

Key Tracks:

1. "The Bully"
2. "Natale's Song"
3. "The Church of What's Happening Now"

1 out of 5 stars Not so good without Zero 7.......2006-06-08

I hear this album in FYE and a few songs on her myspace, and was disappointed. i was expecting a zero 7 with a little twist, but only got her voice. her voice is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing voices ever. its melodic and smooth like audio coffee...or audio hot chocolate. but her voice is best complimented by Zero 7's music. i'm still confused as to why they haven't joined forces. they're like peas and carrots(u know this, if u've heard any of zero 7's albums) and this album is like peas and...brussel sprouts. its like...huh? with the wrong music, her voice gets annoying-fast.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing like Dido.......2005-07-12

Are you kidding? Sia is totally her own thing, and that thing isn't pop.

"Breathe Me" was Six Feet Under's swan song.
Also, if you like Zero 7, this album is a slam dunk. Click on Buy Now, right now.

If you're not quite sure what this Zero 7 thing is, then don't despair. Sia is a sweet, wispy voiced woman who sings songs like she ACTUALLY understands the meaning behind them. The songs are simple, not over produced and hooky. And this is one of the albums you put on and let it play, rather than single laden. Beautiful morning music.

5 out of 5 stars Sia's is a confession worth hearing........2004-05-23

It begins, languid and slow, as Sia murmurs, subdued, trance-like, "You don't know me, you can't hold me, I'll slip through your hands, I am one single grain of sand."

But we do know Sia Furler - as the fragile, enigmatic voice behind Destiny and Distractions on Zero 7's Simple Things. But do we really know Sia beyond the voice? If you listen to this album, you will. There's more to Sia than her "jazzy slurs" and easy-listening urban R&B-influenced reputation.

Her second album, Colour The Small One, is intimate and confiding, a private paint-box of myriad shades, a lonely cry for help. In Sunday, the Australian singer's childishly vulnerable voice pulls you closer, as she pleads "for those with guilt, for those who wilt under pressure, no tears over spilt milk". A simple, poignant piano melody introduces Breathe Me, as Sia admits, "I am small and needy." Co-written with Beck, The Bully is a morally-weighted purging of suppressed guilt juxtaposed with Sweet Potato, a charmingly eccentric, happily-ever-after love song.

A return to the recurring theme of culpability comes with Don't Bring Me Down, a lilting plea to resist the vulnerability that emotions bring. Later, in Natale's Song, she surrenders reluctantly until she embraces her capitulation completely in The Church Of What's Happening Now as she exhorts us to "throw away yesterday". Sia tightly restrains her voice through most of the album, only breaking free, loose and confident, on the final song, Where I Belong, where she spirals wildly before finally finding redemption at the end of it all. "And soon you will see that we are blessed and complete, there's a place here for you with me."

4 out of 5 stars Sophmore effort scores on all fronts.......2004-05-19

I came across Sia while watching here play with Zero 7 and was mighty impressed but her first record didn't resonate with me enough to listen to it frequently. But in Colour the Small One she has grown wonderfully (at least to me) in creating lush songs with alot of heart and replayability. I defy you to not become addicted to "Breathe Me".

    Album Description

Sia scored a top 10 hit with her debut single 'Taken for Granted' that sampled Provokiev's 'Romeo & Juliet'. Her debut album, 'Healing Is Difficult', arrived to similar cries of 'the next big r&b thing'. Then, to cap it all, she added her jazzy slurs to two tracks on Zero 7's 'Simple Things' album & became the unmistakable voice of the year's coolest down-tempo soundtrack. Now the sultry songstress is back with her second album 'Colour The Small One', which is set to rekindle the thoughts of an all conquering phenomenon. 11 tracks. Go Discs. 2004.

    5 out of 5 stars SiA a hidden gem!.......2004-02-19

Sia hails from Australia and is responsible for one of the best and most underrated pop albums in the past decade. Her debut Healing Is Difficult is the closest thing to perfect. Sia fuses chill-out and pop with a pinch of soul, which makes a formula that is rich in melody. Her collaborations with moody band Zero 7 proved her vocal prowess with tunes such as "Destiny." But she also marveled as a solo artist with "Drink To Get Drunk" and the mesmerizing "Judge Me."
Colour The Small One is proof that she is here to stay. The underground queen concentrates on creating temperamental, yet scrumptious melodies demonstrated on "The Church Of What's Happening Now" and the opening track "Rewrite." The album does not have any upbeat numbers, but somehow the blend of melancholy with optimism composes a luscious mixture.
The album is packed with gems. It's very hard to pick the standout tracks, however, there are a few that stand like a soar thumb. "Breathe Me" has a kind of glum innocence to it that is rare in music today. "Don't Bring Me Down" has a haunting melody that will leave you wanting more and the closer of the album, "Where I Belong," is a masterpiece of modern music
There is not one track on Colour The Small One that fails to please. "Moon" is a simple and dynamic, much like "Sunday" and the compelling "Natale's Song."
Colour The Small One is an exceptional album.
