That the mainstream folk goddess has become quite a formidable torch singer in her golden years should surprise no one. Ms. Collins has always shone brightest as an interpreter of other's songs, from traditional folk tunes to such notable covers as her takes on Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." Not far from 70 years of age at the time of this album's release, Ms. Collins lends a gentle irony to her reading of "When I'm 64." But her voice is clear; it's as youthful and plaintive as it's been in years. And on tracks like "Norwegian Wood" and "Blackbird," it's flat-out gorgeous. Ably backed by studio musicians Larry Campbell, Tony Levon, and Zev Katz, these jazzy renditions of your favorite Beatle numbers--though where's "Revolution"?--are simply a delight. Buy it for your mom, but treat yourself to a listen first. --Mike McGonigal

JUDY COLLINS'S new album is truly quite a masterpiece.
I never was a BEATLES-fan, but hearing her interpretations of
these songs makes me just realize the greatness of these songs.
She brings a closeness to the lyrics, and her mucicality and artistry
that she has used on her other wonderful work throughout the years
makes this a fantastic album.
All 12 songs are just great, and if you did not know it, they could very well have been written with JUDY'S voice in mind.
The arrangements on each song is perfect and the musicians are brilliant.
This is really a great work of art!

At first, the notion of Judy Collins doing an all Beatles cd turned me off: who could improve on the originals? But this cd, the more I listen to it, really grows on me and I very much enjoy Collins's varied interpretations. In fact, she makes some of these tunes sound new again and who would have thought that possible? She is especially good on "Blackbird" and "Long and Winding Road," but also shines on "And I Love Her" and "Good Day Sunshine." "I'll Follow the Sun" was a perfect choice for her, as well. I'm not crazy about the children's choir on "Hey Jude," and it was a brave venture on her part to even record this classic...it works well in spots, but the ending kind of falls apart, in my opinion. The most remarkable thing about this cd is Collins's voice; it sounds as clear and crisp and warm as it did decades ago; in some ways, it sounds as if it's improved over time. I never would have guessed when I first started listing to Collins in 1968 that she would still be putting out albums almost 40 years later. All in all, this is a cd I would highly recommend. In my opinion, Judy could sing the alphabet and make it truly her own...at this point in her career she has nothing to prove, and it seems as if she's having lots of fun taking on the Beatles. Thanks again, Judy, for blessing us with your remarkable voice and keep on singing!

Take a sad song and make it better"?.......2007-07-17

After having recorded an all Dylan and then an all Leonard Cohen CD, Judy Collins finally sings twelve Lennon-McCartney songs. (Is it possible that she has only recorded one Beatles song previously, her glorious rendition of "In My Life"?) My favorite is "Yesterday," with a simple, mostly piano accompaniment, followed closely by "Blackbird," "When I'm Sixty-four" and "Hey Jude." "When I'm Sixty-four" is particularly poignant since John Lennon, as the whole world knows, was killed years ago and never made that magic number. Collins adds a nice touch by changing the final phrase to "when I'm 84." Adding a children's choir to "Hey Jude" works nicely as well. The selections that work best are those with fewer rather than more instruments (including Korg Triton and Minimoog) accompanying Ms. Collins.
"And I Love Her" and "Norwegian Wood" suffer from too much loud background music and should be remixed.

Ms. Collins faces the dilemma that everyone faces when he or she records music that the original group or singer has already made famous. While her arrangements of these familiar songs are perfectly fine, she does not improve on the originals. No one will ever sing "When I'm Sixty-four" and "Yesterday" better than the Beatles for the precise reason that they sang beautifully together. (The women who did a tribute album to Dolly Parton had the same problem a few years ago.) In a word, it is a lot easier to improve on a song sung by Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen than John Lennon and Paul McCartney. On the other hand, that a singer in her sixth decade is still singing and doing it so beautifully is cause for rejoicing.

While this is not Ms. Collins' best CD (I would give that to the outrageously wonderful "Who Knows Where the Times Goes"), her tribute to Lennon-McCartney is certainly worth listening to and far better than what most of her contemporaries are recording.

Sheryl in Full Bloom (4.5 stars).......2007-06-21

With "Wildflower", Sheryl Crow once again deliberately avoided hot new trends, replacing them with solid, smooth, mature, and most importantly, beautiful effort. The result is one almost perfect album, with emphasis on moody, generous-sounding and soothing songs. Those small charms of the tracks don't grow on you as quickly as you might like, but the rewards are all the better for it. The first three songs summarize the feel of the CD very well, being rather similar in tempo but equally different and beautiful in their own way. On "Chances Are", the artist chooses a trip-hoppy path treaded so well with "Safe and Sound" from the 2002 "C'mon C'mon". And the fabulous "Always on Your Side" (soon afterwards remade as a duet with Sting) deserves to go down as one of the most gorgeous songs of early stages of this millennium. All in all, "Wildflower" is a suitable antidote to Sheryl's most daring eponymous album (1996) and a class act from start to finish.

...yet it seems to be her most overlooked, as I don't hear any of this stuff on the radio. Best songs on here are the ones I can put on "REPEAT" and listen to several times in a row (Perfect Lie, Good is Good, Chances Are, Lifetimes). I've heard the 'Always On Your Side' duet with Sting, and it is superior to her solo version on this CD (like Moby's 'Southside' song is flat without Gwen Stefani).

My recommendation for Sheryl Crow is to buy all buy all five of her regular albums (you can get them relatively cheap) and throw in her soundtrack stuff ('Real Gone' from Cars, 'Sweet Child Of Mine' from Big Daddy, 'Tomorrow Never Dies' from the 007 movie of the same name) and maybe even her Greatest Hits CD (for the Kid Rock duet and the cover of Cat Stevens' 'First Cut Is The Deepest'). Then make YOUR OWN greatest hits, based on what sounds good to YOU (I do this with MOST artists, so ...).

Sheryl Crowe's singing. This album moves in
the sense that she sings candedly and also
more softer than past albums. I am the same age
and feel like I am going through the same situations.
I can relate to everything she sings. It seems as though

I liked the CD. I thought it had a good range of songs and styles. As with any new CD I purchase I have to listen to it a few times before I really get into it.

Another winner from jazz pianist Keiko Matsui!.......2006-10-01

"Wildflower" is another feast for the ears and soul--a fervent brew of smooth, lushly orchestrated modern jazz with deep, dark overtones and sophisticated, organic arrangements. Pianist and composer Keiko Matsui is one of those artists who just keeps getting better and better. This is wonderfully stirring stuff, filled with both beauty and power! Matsui is joined on this album by Tomohito Aoki on bass, Akira Jimbo on percussion, Kazu Matsui on shakuhachi, and both Shinobu Ishizaki and Masamichi Nanji on soprano saxophone. Try her other releases too, as well as her collaboration with husband Kazu in "The Stone Monkey." Some other albums with a similar sense of sweep, sentiment and power, albeit in different musical styles, are "Nomad" by Jesse Cook (Latin fusion), "Luna Park" by Kila (Afro-Celtic fusion), "Angels of Venice" by the group of the same name (New Age / world fusion) and "Two Horizons" by Moya Brennan (Celtic-New Age fusion).

Another winner from Narada.......2006-03-15

An impressive CD that works on many levels. I do not hesitate to put this CD on when friends are over - it creates a great ambience. Though it is not intrusive, guests will take notice of it and may even ask what you have on. I can't quite classify it as "jazz" or "new age" -- much of it is quite mellow. Yet my favorite track, "Eldest of All", just explodes with virtuoso emotion and demands closer attention. Keiko Matsui is extraordinarily talented and she's a pleasure to listen to. Another winner from Narada!

An Underrated pianist in the United States..............2006-02-02

Over the last 16 years female pianist have been slowly but, surely been making it quite well here in the United States but, sadly Keiko is still under the radar......You'd think how this album came out a few years after the grammy's gave big hoopla over Alica Keys that finally Keiko would get some recognition...but, alas no. Guess if you don't mix a bit of hip hop or be moody like Fiona you're just not going to catch on here.... This is a great album has that japanese jazz flow that can be found in parts of the armitage soundtracks yet, theres some touches of traditional jazz piano here too even though the synth's in this may at points mislead you into thinking this album is some sort of new age music but, alas it's not. Think more of it as Micheal-Jarre if he was to play the piano on his lp's.....This is a good album to give a whirl if you're not familer with Keiko....You'll be pleasently surprised by how often you'll find your self listening to this album...

I've been listening to jazz for over thirty years and I can honestly say that the song "Reflections" found on this outstanding album is undoubtedly my favorite jazz composition of all time. The classical tone, the hypnotic rhythms, the brilliant and complex intonations and inflections and the beautiful, subtle background sounds make this a song that can, like a classical piece, be listened to over and over again with a new discovery being made on each listening. And it never fails to bring on a calm, joyful mood each time I listen to it, never losing its appeal. I would have gladly paid the full price of this CD for this one song alone. Absolutely brilliant!

BLACK & WHITE.......2007-05-19

My favorite songs on this CD are "Good is Good","Live it Up","I Don't Wanna Know" and "Always on Your Side". The music and lyrics are generally good however the vocal range on the songs could have made the songs better. The only song on the CD that comes close to exhibiting the range I am referring to is "I Don't Wanna Know". I feel that if another artist such as Jo-Dee Messina covered some of these songs it would have been an improvement on some well thought out lyrics and great instrumental pieces. I also liked the duet with Sting. The inside art is very well done as well. I only gave it a star because as a whole I felt it wasn't worth anything more. So there you have it the black and white of my opinion on this work.

If you like sheryl crow get this cd. Its her best work ...The track with sting is very well done.Some guitar work on certian songs remind me of George Harrison's way of playing....Buy it you'll be happy.

Sheryl Crow has consistently proven herself a talented musician and song writer. This is a good cd with great sound. Since I picked up Wildflower when it came out in 2005, there are now two additional editions.

The deluxe edition includes a bonus DVD with seven acoustic tracks: Where Has All the Love Gone, Letter to God, I Know Why, Perfect Lie, Lifetimes, Good Is Good, and Always on Your Side. It also has the video for "Good Is Good."

The bonus tracks edition adds an Always On Your Side remix as a bonus track. The standard cut of Always On Your Side is included as with the original edition as well.

It'll be hard to pick a favorite, but you still will really like each and every song.

As a historical footnote, Skylark is notable for being the first recorded work of David Foster, who would go on to write and produce Grammy-winning hits for such artists as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. But at the time of its 1972 release, Foster was simply the driving force behind this overlooked, soul-pop combo. Skylark managed just one U.S. hit, the gorgeous, melancholy title track of this collection, but songs like "Writing's on the Wall" and "Suites for My Lady" have the same sultry late-night vibe. Highly recommended for Foster completists, but also for fans of acts such as Hall & Oates or Chicago. --David Sprague

So Much Talent, But So little Commercial Sucess!.......2007-02-06

When you look back at this album, little did we know in the spring of 1973, ( when "WILDFLOWER" was breaking into the BILLBOARD TOP 10), that this group had one of the most dominant musicians and record producers of the 1980's!!
David Foster went on to be an amazing studio musician and record producer. He produced records for CHICAGO, (He ressurected their career!) Barbara Streisand, Lionel Richie, and a number of other top acts of the 80's. David also was in a few other bands such as AIRPLAY (1980), and the Attitudes (1977). His credentials are legendary! It basically started with the group SKYLARK. However, the short-lived group out of Canada had several other fantastic artists aboard.

One of the lead singers, Donny Gerrard, had one of the greatest soulful voices of the 70's. Listening to him on their big hit "WILDFLOWER" can bring a tear to your eye. It's a shame that he didn't go on to great things. ( He did release a solo album around early 1976 on Greedy Records.) I also think he did a few TV and radio jingles.
Was that him on the MONRO Muffler Commercial back in the late 70'S? "Monro, Monro, we fix your car all under."

Yet another amazing voice in the band was B.J. Cook and later B.J.Cook Foster. (I'm assuming she and David were married for awhile.) B.J. had a voice that was so emotional and chilling at times. "I'll Have to Go Away" which was the follow up hit to "Wildflower" is probably in the TOP 10 most beautiful songs ever! I know that is just one person's opinion, but the musicianship and emotion that runs through this 5 minute ballad is off the charts!!! Unfortunately, this song never made the Billboard chart. I believe it was a BUBBLING Under hit in 1973. Maybe because the 45 version is so hacked up.

Finally, the drummer, Duris Maxwell is a much better than average trap-man. He puts down some nice fills in "What Would I Do Without You".
Overall, this is one of the best albums of the early 70's. So much talent and a unique mix of soul and pop.
The lead singer of the O'Jays said on their live album that the group sounded like a white group trying to sound black, or maybe a blackgroup trying to sound white. I think it was a stab at SKYLARK, but in the song "WIldflower", he made somewhat of a valid point. Unfortunately, SKYLARK only released one more album in 1974. The title is so original- "SKYLARK 2". The sound quality is muffled and they even throw on the hit "WILDFLOWER" as a draw or as to fill up space. The complete first album is on this Collectables CD, and they added "If That's the Way That You Want It" and "Virgin Green" from SKYLARK 2. "Virgin Green" was originally called "Foster Frees" on the record album. This song is an instrumental that really shows off that keyboard talents of David Foster.
On a final note, if you can ever find SKYLARK 2, buy it. It's never been released on CD but it has a lot of great songs. It's too bad Collectables didn't do a two-fer on this CD. With "Wildflower" being repeated on both records, there would have been plenty of room to combine both on one CD. "Skylark 2" has a really FAR-OUT cover which Collectables could have used instead of the generic one. Overall, I heavily recommend this CD.

Suites for my lady.......2006-12-26

I have owned multiple copies of this album since it first came out, and was always disappointed that a follow up album by this group was never released. Although wildflower is a wonderful song and was the song that got the most airplay when the LP was first released, it has always been the instrumental "Suites for my lady" and the vocal "I'll have to go away" that immediately follows it that have been my favorites. The combination of the two pieces is enough to bring a tear to the sternest of individual. The vocals are clean and clear, and at the same time haunting. I have been looking for a CD of this album for many years, as my old LPs have become scratchy from overuse over the years, and I am so happy to finally find it on Amazon.

Wildflower is reason alone to get this CD...the soul-rock groove and the melancholy lyrics are unforgettable. About the only other song I can think of off the top of my head that gets me like this is Into the Night, by Benny Mardones.

If so, even the single hit tune took time to find its legs as I remember it clearly in spring of 1973, along with Wings' "My Love". 1973 was a good year for music overall and there was no better song among the really good singles that year than "Wildflower". You would think that there would have been more from this group to hit the U.S. charts but I can't find one. Even so you can bet I'll always have a good copy ot "Wildflower" on hand. And, hey, check out the rest of the tunes on this package. Not bad.

I saw Amy Speace twice in Harrisburg PA and she's a very good songwriter and performer. She has a beautiful voice. I'm basically a classic rock fan, but lately I've started enjoying some new country music and I really like this artist. Go hear her if you have a chance.

Amy is the Real Thing.......2006-09-03

This CD's songs resonate long after listening to them. It is especially great for long road trips. Amy writes words and music that reflect and touch the Amercan spirit. She inspires us to take risks with Step Out of the Shade and motivates women to be the real thing in a song by that name. Some may call her style americana, folk, or singer-songwriter, but I just know she is the best of all worlds and is one to watch (and listen to) as she rises in the future music scene.

A star on the horizon.......2006-07-06

Amy's voice is better than ever; she has a command of ranges that can be awesome. Her lyrics reach the heart and make the listener hear the story. She is witty and sassy in The Real Thing, sentimental with feeling in Two, and Double Wide is just a great song to have fun with the crowd. She's a winner.

Smart songwriter, beautiful voice.......2006-05-23

This is a great CD. Amy has a lovely voice, and the songs are clever and witty. It is hard to classify the genre - it ranges from folk to rock, with a little bit of twang thrown in for good measure. I love the opening track, Step out of the Shade, but it's the tongue-in-cheek Double Wide Trailer that gets stuck in my head all the time. Real Thing is the best girls' song since the days of Helen Reddy and Gloria Gaynor. I would definitely recommend this CD.

This Completes My Set of Early Collins.......2006-04-25

I have owned the third Judy Collins record since it first came out, and it has been played to death! Several years ago, I attempted a transfer of my well-worn record to CD with moderate success (spent many hours removing scratch clicks manually, when my disk clean-up software failed to do a decent job). It is really nice to have a "clean" copy of this record re-issued on CD from the master tapes. The Concert disk is a real bonus, that I somehow missed in the 60's. Two great albums from Judys' "folk period". Very nice transfer from the tapes!

Another Great CD from Judy.......2004-05-28

Judy Collins 3 and 4 is the 9th album in my collection of Judy Collins music. I heard about it when I saw her in concert in April 2004. Both CD's are great listens because they not only showcase the many colors of Judy's voice but also her guitar playing which is always great to listen to. I enjoy the songs in The Judy Collins Concert because so many of them fall into the category of "protest music." They are all very meaningful and tell wonderful stories. Songs like Tear Down the walls,The Loansome Death of Hattie Carol,and Medgar Ever Lullaby really make you think of times long gone and how far we've come in society.

acoustic folk at its best.......2004-05-19

This 2-CD set is a prime example of folk music at its best. The audio quality is great and there are many songs I enjoy. Some of my favorites include, "The Dove," and "Masters of war." However, my favorite part is the live CD where the audience was included in a couple of songs. Any acoustic folk fan should get this recording.

At last!.......2004-04-16

For the past ten years, I've been bemoaning the lack of Judy Collins early catalog on CD. Her first four recordings were unavailable for many years, and from what I gathered, hadn't ever been available on cassette. With the release of "Maids and Golden Apples" in 2001 and this new recording, the problem has finally been fixed. I am familiar with all the songs due to combing the record stores for so many years but on CD, they sound even better. Collins has a powerful voice in these early songs and has never sounded better. It's an improvement that this time around the albums have been separated into two different CDs; "Maids and Golden Apples" had a few too many songs to comfortably fit on one disc. I thank the people at Wildflower Records for getting these out, and for Elektra for releasing them from their vaults. The world is in need of some good folk music right now, and this CD fills the void. God Bless Judy.

Judy at her folksinger peak--Wow.......2004-03-04

Judy Collins' "#3" album was one of my favorite records growing up. I hadn't heard it for a long time and had eagerly awaited this re-release, at the same being a bit nervous in case it didn't live up to my rose-colored memories. I needn't have worried. Although Collins would go on to a long and distinguished career of notable musical eclecticism, in some ways she never surpassed the performances on both these discs, particularly in sheer vocal freshness and beauty. Already she is aiming for a higher, lighter sound than on her first two albums and the results are now available again for all to hear--the arching vocalise at the beginning and end of "Anathea" must be as gorgeous a thing as she's ever sung. Indeed, the sheer magnetism of her sound leavens what on the whole is a pretty intense and serious program, with grim, in-your-face anti-war tracts ("Masters of War," "The Dove") rubbing shoulders with protest songs whose message is in no wise veiled by their tunefulness ("Deportee," "The Bells of Rhymney"), with folk-style homages to classic images of oppressed and abandoned women thrown in ("Anathea," "Ten O'Clock All is Well," and the chilling "In the Hills of Shiloh," about a backwoods Miss Havisham character). The sweetness of Bob Dylan's "Farewell" and Pete Seeger's "Turn, Turn , Turn" is a masterly contrast to these topical songs which seem not to have dated at all.

"The Judy Collins Concert," documenting her first Town Hall recital in 1964, being a live recording, is naturally less vocally polished, but the electricity of the occasion evokes an intensity in Collins' singing which is ample compensation. Here as on "#3" is superb material: the haunting "Winter Sky," the irresistible "Tear Down the Walls" and her version of the traditional ballad "Cruel Mother" are highlights. Though the remastered sound reveals some distortion on both albums, the wonderful playing of her assisting artists, Jim McGuinn and Bill Takas on "#3," Steve Mandell and Chuck Israels on "Concert," can now be more fully appreciated.

Huge Disappointment.......2006-05-21

If you are looking for the essential Judy Collins, don't buy this CD. Yes, it is still her fabulous golden soprano voice, but the selections and the arrangements were almost unrecognizable from the Judy I was expecting.

Boring.......2006-04-08

Here voice is great but the songs are boring. Plus these are just another collection of songs she's done before. If you are a fan of slow songs then this is for you but I'll take the originals of all her remakes.

The Essential or Another Best Of?.......2005-02-22

There is certainly nothing wrong with Ms. Collins' renditions of these songs. Her voice as always is heavenly; her piano technique, when she accompanies herself, if flawless. But with the possible exception of "Bridge Over Trouble Water"-- and I may be wrong about that song-- there is not one cut here that Ms. Collins hasn't recorded before and several of them, many times-- "Amazing Grace", "Both Side Now", "Send in the Clowns", "Song for Bernadette," for example. (There are practically no notes with this recording, usually a pretty good sign that the material is warmed over.) If she prefers never to sing new material again, she has that right. After all, she has been gracing us with beautiful music for over forty years now. But surely we already have enough "best of's" and live performances. Usually I blame the record company for wanting to cash in on a performer's popularity when these sorts of compilations are released over and over. In this instance, however, I notice that Ms. Collins is listed as the producer so she must bear some of the responsibility for this CD.

I purchased this CD because I do not have recordings of some of the songs Collins sings here-- "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Bright Morning Stars" and "One Day At A Time"-- what a great arrangement-- but I'm ready for some new material from this fine artist.

Judy Sings With Friends.......2005-01-23

Judy Collins, along with Eric Andersen, Tom Rush and Arlo Guthrie, recorded this CD from a live performance of The Judy Collins Wildflower Festival on June 30, 2002. Of the fifteen cuts here, Ms. Collins sings six solos; Tom Rush does two as does Eric Andersen; and Arlo Guthrie sings one and does a poem that he has written. The last three cuts, "City of New Orleans", "Thirsty Boots", and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" are sung by everyone with different singers doing the verses. Tom Rush's version of "The Remember Song" is a nice, light number about all the things he as a middle-aged man forgets. (Sounds eerily familiar.) Eric Andersen's best song is "Close the Door Lightly When You Go." Arlo Guthrie's attempt at poetry in Mooses Come Walking" is the only dog on this otherwise beautifully done CD. He does redeem himself, however, as he leads off on "City of New Orleans", a song I always associate with him. (Fans of both his father and him, as well as people of good will everywhere, of course are happy to see him middle-aged and healthy as his father died of the awful Huntington's Disease.)

Certainly the "star" of this album is Judy Collins who in her 60's remains one of our best singers and song-writers. She wrote four of her six solo selections including "Kingdom Come," a moving tribute to the New York City Firemen who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. She sings "Open the Door", a song she wrote and sang years ago, a beautiful paen to friendship. She also includes the Ian Tyson great "Someday Soon" with a mean piano accompaniment by Russell Walden (?)where she shows off her still youthful voice by ending on a great high note. Since Ms. Collins has already done an all-Leonard Cohen and all-Bob Dylan CD, why not an all-Ian Tyson recording? Mr. Tyson certainly has enough fine material and Ms. Collins inteprets him so very well.)

This live performance has a wonderfully spontaneous feel about it. Everyone seems to be having a good time. Their joy is catching.

Judy and Friends.......2004-05-02

This is a great album! I have been a devoted fan of Judy's for several years now and am most likely one of her yougest fans. My favorite songs of Judy's on this album are Kingdom Come which is her 9/11 tribute and Wings of Angels which she wrote for her son. I have heard her do Kingdom Come the two two times I've seen her in concert and hearing it on the CD is just as powerful.

I also enjoyed the proformances of Eric Anderson Arlo Guthrie and Tom Rush. I had not heard of them before hearing this CD and their singing, songwriting and guitar playing are all wonderful. All in All this is a great CD and I'm pleased to add it to my growing collection of Judy Collins music.

If Beauty has a voice, it is Judy Collins's........2003-10-22

This CD is great because of its variety from Judy and her friends. I also think Judy Collins is at her best during live performances. Two sad songs are on this CD. "Wings of Angels" is about her son's death and "Kingdom Come" is about 9/11. She sang "Kingdom Come" at her Oct. 12th concert here, and listening to the song on the CD is just as powerful as hearing (and seeing) her live performance. Arlo Guthrie is well known abroad (Alice's Restaurant Fame), Eric Andersen's "Thirsty Boots " is a classic as Andersen's "Little Mermaid". Tom Rush is a discover for a foreigner.
