When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major-label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Some fantastic singles.......2007-06-27

This is the only Death Cab album I like, but it's an amazing one. If you're new to the band, start here!

5 out of 5 stars I'll follow You into the Dark!.......2007-05-16

My wife and I heard the tract "I'll Follow You Into the Dark" on Jay Leno and since August is our 44th Anniversary we thought it would be the perfect song to play at the renewing of our vows. Suprisingly the entire CD was as awesome as the one song we had heard and we've enjoyed every one on it. It's a little different than what we've always listened to, things like Steppenwolf and Led Zepplin, but we've become fans of "Death Cab For Cutie!"

5 out of 5 stars Hoping to pull this up to 4.5 stars..........2007-04-11

I would actually give Plans 4.5 stars, but I am rating it a 5 to help pull the overall rating to a 4.5.

This was my introduction to Death Cab For Cutie by a friend. She made me listen to "Soul Meets Body", and I was in love with that song. I purchased the album, and to my surprise, there were a few tracks I liked more than "Soul Meets Body". There are a couple of tracks that don't work well ("Brothers on a Hotel Bed", for instance), but when it does work well, it's a mellow and beautiful listen.

Standout tracks: "Marching Bands of Manhattan", "I Will Follow You Into the Dark", "Crooked Teeth", "Soul Meets Body", "Summer Skin", "Your Heart is an Empty Room".

5 out of 5 stars IT'S ALL GOOD.......2007-03-23

I bought this CD after hearing "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" and "Crooked Teeth." The whole CD is quite good, and some of it is relaxing, too. We actually listened to it during dinner. It was good straight through. Haven't heard much of "Death Cab For Cutie" other than this CD, but would definitely check them out more now!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-03-11

Somewhere I heard their track "Follow me into the dark" and the accoustic guitar caught my attention. I don't listen to the radio that much since I don't have a long commute - kitchen to office type thing. The other day I heard it again and this time I caught the name of the album - I'm notorious for not knowing the names of bands and this one zipped by me too. I know what I like and I know good music when I hear it. Frequently when I've bought a CD for one track I'm disappointed by the tone or quality of the rest ... but, not in this case. They have the quality of many of the bands from the 60s, but they are original and thoughtful in their writing. This record is relatively mellow, but it has as pleasant energy about it. Similar to another review here on Amazon, I'm interested in looking into their previous work and will look for new releases from them. If someones doesn't talk them out of their own style and will let them alone to continue to develop it, they'll be around for a long time I'm quite certain.

    Album Description

On "Big Plans," veterans of The Mannish Boys lend their full support with a perfectly chosen program of seldom heard covers and strong original material. Members both past and present are given ample room to strut their stuff featuring great performances by Finis Tasby, Johnny Dyer, Kid Ramos, Kirk "Eli" Fletcher, Frank "Paris Slim" Goldwasser, Leon Blue, Randy Chortkoff, Tom Leavey and Richard "Big Foot" Innes.

Of course it wouldn't be a Mannish Boys CD without some surprises, and this time out they look to the blues capital of Chicago for a couple of extraordinary special guests including legendary blues guitarist Jody Williams, known for his ground breaking work on classic '50's sides by Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Rogers and Billy Boy Arnold. Delta Groove also proudly introduces veteran Chicago singer Bobby Jones, who was active on the Chicago blues scene in the late '50's. Jones was the featured vocalist in The Aces with Dave and Louis Myers a few years after they'd parted ways with Little Walter. Other guests include Rick Holmstrom, Mitch Kashmar, Rob Rio, Larry Taylor, Jeff Turmes and David "Woody" Woodford..."Big Plans" indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Music to a Memorable Screenplay .......2006-03-21

Everything about this excellent score is pure America. The tempo corresponds to the changing moods of the film from the rolling road rhythm to the erotic tango and the college flaky beat during the practical joke which misfires. I am the only member of my family who hasn't visited the USA but I am hoping to one day make the trip and experience the multitude of cultures which inspired Thomas Newman, the composer, to produce such musical imagery in the changing scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Good original score, though better old melodies.......2002-10-08

As a matter of fact I bought this CD not as much due to Mr. Newman's original scrore, but since I liked very much the treatment of the beatiful Spanish song "La Violetera" in key moments of the film. Mr. Newman's music is very good, but the Spanish and Argentine music he used was much better. The performances of "The Tango Project" are superb. "La Violetera" is probably the nicest Spanish song, talking of a florist; it is widely known in its original version in Spain and Latin America, and moreover, came to international light thanks to Charles Chaplin's "City Lights" where it was the Leitmotif of the blind florist girl (a very adequate use indeed). The tango "Por una Cabeza" is probably the highlight of the score, because it is the piece danced by Al Pacino; unfortunately the other tango "Caminito", played by the orchestra at the restaurant, does not appear here. It is a petty. As a whole, I like the CD very much, especially the two performances of "The Tango Project", but just because they are more touching to my cultural heritage. Nonetheless, I praise both Mr. Newman's personal compositions as well as his perfect use of other's melodies.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done, Thomas, nicely done........2002-08-15

This cd is worth price of admission for one huge reason, the main theme music. It comes at us twice during our listening journey of Scent Of a Woman. It is likened to a kid finally learning to ride a bike for the first time, flying down his neigborhood road with a look of pride and surprise smudged neatly on his face. It is a delightful melody that will continue to stick in your mind for a long, long while.

Other notable tracks on this score are tracks 45 in 25, Balloons, Beyond Danger, and End Title.

This is a must cd for Newman fans and a very nice addition for any fan of film scores. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Newman is On and Off, as Usual.......2001-10-16

Scent of a Woman is 50% of a truly great film score...and 50% of a truly bad film score. It's obvious to the listener from which category a particular track comes from. Newman either gives the listener a vibrant, exciting, "new age" melody, or something that can only arguably be defined as music.

The fact remains, however, that when this score is on, it is REALLY on. The Main Title is an exciting track and the more emotional themes can really grab you by the heartstrings (though they undoubtedly hearken back to other works by Newman).

All in all though, for anyone familiar with Newman, two other scores better exemplify his talents. If you are looking for the unorthodox, "new age" Newman, go with American Beauty. If it's lush strings and sentiment you're after, go with Meet Joe Black (my personal favorite Newman score to date). Both will leave you with a much better idea of this talented composer.

    4 out of 5 stars Contains a GREAT song.......2000-01-19

Por Una Cabeza is a great song. I could listen to it all day. This is the first cd I found with a good version of it.

      Album Description

With the departure of drummer Sara Romweber, this album became kind of a studio project for Mitch Easter, but hey, if anybody was ever up to the task of a self-produced solo record, it would be Mitch! The music's a little less new wave-y here, and a little more personal…one of the better albums released in 1986. Includes 'In Little Ways; Talking to Myself; Writing the Book of Last Pages; Last Chance Town; Won't Go Wrong; Badger; Fell; Still Dark Out; Whispered News; Reflecting Pool', and 'Route 67'. Mitch has also come up with two bonus tracks, 'Invisible Hills' and 'Horizon', a later version of which ended up on his subsequent album, 'Every Dog Has His Day,' which we're also reissuing. A 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the 80's.......2007-04-16

I listened to my cassette copied version of this--given to me by one of my indie-friends back in the 80's--over and over. Each time, it surprised me....one of those recordings that don't get old, don't get boring, and just seem to strike the right chord. While slightly dated, it actually sounds a lot like many of the bands attempting to be indie today. I find it odd that no one knew of them then and even fewer know of them today. I do like REM's first few albums, but this is much better. Also worth getting Cypress/Afoot. Definitely one of the my favorite "obscure" albums of the 80's (along with the Sound-- both albums, the Chameleons's Strange Times, and Died Pretty's Free Dirt--good luck finding that one!).

      5 out of 5 stars A Pop Classic.......2006-03-23

I'm so happy to see that this has been rereleased and hope that it sells so that others can discover what a great talent Mitch Easter has at writing songs and playing guitar. Sure, REM can thank him for doing the knob-twiddling for their first 3 releases that set them apart in college radio, but Easter deserves credit for all of the work that Let's Active did as a band. They were fantastic live as well if you ever got the chance. If you like some of the quirkier indy bands that are popular these days you'll find a lot to like on "Big Plans . . ."

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic album.......2006-01-24

i love cypress/afoot, will always love it. the 2 albums are different enough that comparisons need not be made. so let's enjoy the greatness of this album seperately.

writing the book of last pages is grand, as is won't go wrong, these sound like the growth of the band we came to love. mitch's involvement of other musicians helps the album sound fresh and energetic, which can be the downside of one-person albums (the toms pulls it off as well!)

i have listened to this alot since i got it, and it's layered production is great to get lost in.

5 out of 5 stars at last on CD..........2005-05-05

If ever a band was criminally overlooked by the music industry, it's Let's Active. Each album they did is excellent. All their songs appear to be middle-of-the-road pop/rock at first but each listen seems to bring something new with it. You could put Mitch Easter right up with any recognized 'great' songwriter of the past 30 years, easily. 'Big Plans For Everybody' is their 2nd LP, and it sounds like a cross between REM's 'Green' and The Stone Roses first album, and yeah it pre-dates both of those. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Makes 1986 feels like 2004.......2003-12-02

As my tastes in music have come full circle, Let's Active has always been in the loop. Every 2 months, I listen to Big Plans... for the last 16 years! I never get tired of it. The Shins, Built to Spill, Elliott Smith, owe something to Let's Active. It takes a few listens, but the reward is definitely forthcoming in the end. Until these reissues, CDs of Let's Active were running $50+ on eBay if that means anything. Get 'em while you still can.

Sure, ISAN have a distinctive palette of sonic tools and melodic theory from which they rarely diverge. But how many great albums do most groups produce? This duo has consistently delivered. Imagine relaxing on the Danube on a clear day with little puffy clouds wafting along when suddenly your favorite music box from your childhood lazily floats by atop a clean, clear iceberg. What is this iceberg doing in here in the middle of summer? Pastels and primaries reflect through this ice cube and woo you into a dream state where you hear every leaf fall, and every dripping faucet, and they are all aligned in an accidental symphony. Not to say that Isan are scoring on accident. It takes four gifted ears to make something both pleasant and challenging, simultaneously deep and simple. This is like dragging a giant record needle slowly around a Zen rock garden. I hope Eno is listening. If you like ISAN then I suggest some Audio Dregs Recordings artists as well.

5 out of 5 stars Delicate instrumentals made with a graceful touch and an invitation to float freely. .......2006-08-07

While the landscape of "dreamy" electronica has been quite flooded in the last several years there will always be those that rise above the flock in any crowded genre, and Isan are one of the few who do indeed float high above most of their peers. What makes Isan so special is the songs, using their laptops and keyboards to create airy melodies and lovely lucid washes of sound. While so many of their contemporaries have added forced vocals on top of their sounds, often big name guests, in order to break into the "next level" we're happy that Isan have kept it purely instrumental, as the songs they write feel totally complete as-is and allow us, as listeners, to bring more of our imagination to the songs. There are definite similarities to like minded and former label mates Mum, especially their first primarily instrumental debut, as well fleeting glimpses of Boards of Canada at their most blissed out, and perhaps like a less skeletal version of Colleen. We also keep thinking a lot about how Isan in many ways represent this generation's version of Durruti Column. Delicate instrumentals made with a graceful touch and an invitation to float freely.

      3 out of 5 stars MICHAEL UPTON's igloomag.com REVIEW :: .......2006-07-09

      MICHAEL UPTON's igloomag.com REVIEW ::

(07.08.06) ISAN make very nice music. They have the lightest, crispest percussion in the universe and layer cheerful melodies over soothing chords. The beats are never in your face, the bass tones are soft and rounded. For me they're something like the aural equivalent of high quality chocolates - every chocolate tastes great, but the sweetness gets a bit much too consume in one sitting.

Plans Drawn In Pencil shows no great diversion from what ISAN have done before, but if you're looking for some relaxed electronica and are tired of your Boards of Canada records, this is a safe bet.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars awesome baritone.......2002-05-01

This is a great CD to me because I play Baritone of course. But this is a great CD even if you've never even heard of a Baritone before. This music will get your attention no matter who you are!

      5 out of 5 stars A Euphonium player's essential CD.......2002-03-13

Plain and simple- if you want to here what a euphonium player should strive for, this too-good-to-be-true CD is it.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful performance by both the soloist and band........1999-09-11

The euphonium isn't as well known as other brass instruments, and I think Michael J. Colburn will help it to be better known with this CD. Mr. Colburn brings out the beautiful sound of this instrument. I recommend this CD for anyone who likes to listen to virtuoso solos and wishes to hear a great euphonium player.

5 out of 5 stars Great Euphonium Playing!.......1999-01-15

This is really great CD! Michael Colburn is a great performer. I could listen to this over and over and over again...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD played on the best of Brass instruments.......1998-12-17

This is a CD that one can listen to countless times. The virtuoso playing and beautiful tone produced by Michael aptly display the characteristics of the euphonium. The selections are for college and graduate level players, as well as the occasionally "gifted" highschooler. A must hear, and a must buy.
