Editorial Reviews

For their third album, Lifehouse, with the help of producer John Alagia (John Mayer, Dave Matthews), have turned down the amps and left the Creed comparisons behind. In return, the trio are geared to become the smoothest ride on alternative radio. Singer-songwriter Jason Wade has the perfect voice to pitch a 21st century emo-ballad and he's never prettier than on the earnest "Into the Sun." Even when the group ramps up the guitars, the result is modestly subdued as the angst of "We'll Never Know" is sweetly leavened with lush harmonies. Having opened for the likes of Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones and Iron Maiden (?!), Lifehouse have now chosen the quieter path. Fans of their monster hit "Hanging By A Moment" should still find plenty to recognize and relish, but these young men are foregoing any potential head banging for a strong tug at the heart. --Jaan Uhelszki

Who We Are is another set of rousing anthems from this reflective trio. On their fourth full-length, the Los Angeles three-piece sets the template for a harder-rocking effort with dynamic opener "Disarray," in which singer/guitarist Jason Wade admits he doesn't know where he's going, but "wouldn't have it any other way." The band rocks even harder on album highlight "The Joke," a song inspired by a real-life suicide. It's a risk that pays off, although the lyrics almost make the subject seem more defiant than regretful. Throughout the record, Rick Woolstenhulme's drums sound like they're cranked up to 11--not that there's anything wrong with that (Bryce Soderberg holds his own on bass). In other words, the music isn't shy (or subtle), but Wade's words read more like questions than answers. Granted, closing number "Storm," with Rocco DeLuca on organ, brings things to a gentle close, but most tracks follow in the over-sized footsteps of post-grunge precursors, like Live and Stone Temple Pilots. Then again, as Abigail Van Buren used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If Lifehouse ever find what they're looking for, to paraphrase yet another sage, they may as well pack it in. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Lifehouse is singer-guitarist Jason Wade, drummer Rick Woolstenhulme and bassist-singer Bryce Soderberg. These three guys are a hit making machine!

Jason Wade proved himself a gifted songwriter with Lifehouse's first record, 2000's multiplatinum No Name Face, which spawned the #1 hit "Hanging by a Moment." Calling that song a hit, however, is a bit of an understatement as "Hanging by a Moment" was the most-played song of 2001.

Stanley Climbfall, the band's Top 10 follow-up, was released in 2002.

2005 saw the release of their third album simply titled Lifehouse which included the undeniable hit #1 multi-format hit "You And Me" and kept the band out on the road touring for over a year.

With Who We Are, Lifehouse takes another evolutionary step making an upbeat album full of potential hits sure to please fans and make new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2007-07-23

I greatly enjoied it.

A few people commented here about not liking "The Joke". Its one of my favorites on the CD. But then, I'm probably a little older than your average review writer here. "The Joke" shows direct old Cheap Trick influence. I could have easily been listenning to an old Neilsen/Zander/Peterson composition. For those of you who didn't like Cheap Trick in the 70's and early 80's (ala One on One, Dream Police, et al), this song may sound a little strange. However, I found it completely refreshing and different than anything I have heard in a long time. There guys just keep getting better.

4 out of 5 stars Lifehouse rocking POP..........2007-07-23

Have to admit, was wondering if they could ever capture the magic of No Name Face. They did here.A fine mix of soft rockers and balladry. Starting off with Disarray,First Time,Whatever It Takes...the album is destined for success.Among the other standouts are Broken,The Joke,Easier To Be and Learn You Inside Out. A real enjoyable effort from Lifehouse from beg. to end.I would highly recommend this one to many who perhaps, gave up on them after No Name Face. I did continue to buy there other efforts, but this one is my second fave .Buy it and you won't regret it. A solid 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-23

I am a big fan of Lifehouse so when I heard they were coming out with a new cd I had to have it. I bought it the day it was released. I never do that. It is refreshing to hear new songs of your favorite band. It was a big suprise to hear every amazing track. Lifehouse will go down as one of my "kinds of music" till I die. I definitely recommend this album to anybody that is a die hard Lifehouse fan.

5 out of 5 stars Meaningful and Unique.......2007-07-20

Not only is "No Name Face" Lifehouse's best album, it's also one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's almost impossible to compare anything to it; it's just in a league of its own. That said, "Who We Are" does do its best to catch up to its excellent predecessor.

There's not one track on this album that I dislike. The argued-over "The Joke" is the strongest, most original song on here, and the most musically interesting track I've heard in a while. It's fusion of a rock chorus and jazz-like verses give it an exotic feel, and its lyrics are, at the same time, heart-breaking and angering. They took a gamble with this song, and it pays off.

The ballads, which I've missed in the last two CDs, are strong and meaningful, especially with Wade's gorgeous, "The Storm." While many others say that the last songs on the cd seem to be indistinguishable, I think they're unique and catchy in their own way, and very lyrically different. Wade's songwriting skills never cease to amaze me.

5 out of 5 stars A Necessity.......2007-07-20

This is a necessity for life. This CD is awesome. It has some very unique melodies and the lyrics really touch the hear in a very special way. A must have for your CD collection.

No Name Face is an auspicious debut from a band seemingly made to rule the airwaves. The insinuating melodies that mark Lifehouse's radio-friendly sound are not unlike those of matchbox twenty or Live in their softer moments. From the first single, "Hanging by a Moment," to the emotive and uplifting "Quasimodo" and the wonderful "Trying" (think Crowded House at their lilting best), Lifehouse are self-possessed and focused. Young singer-songwriter Jason Wade (the son of two ministers) imbues Lifehouse's vibe with a spiritual quality that's never heavy-handed, delivering the goods with the authority of an experienced troubadour. No Name Face may be a first offering from a young band, but it looks to signal the beginning of an estimable career. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars It's only rock -n- roll to me.......2007-07-16

I love this cd! It isn't rock as hard as creed but not as soft as Barry Manilow. I would consider it moderate rock. Not mellow and Not heavy. Just a good rock cd.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely spellbound by NO NAME FACE.......2007-04-23

It strikes a distinguished peculiarity how easy it is to forget Lifehouse's No Name Face. This disc helps me relate to the high school that is vastly past me yet pending. The aforementioned disc has some melodies that confront you with a jolt of emotion absent of any sort of devious ploy whatsoever. The vocalist's voice is deep, true and quite earth shattering when need be. The modulation is quite unique. Almost every song displays weeks and years of integrity and passion. The kind of music one does not have to acclimatize to or get unsober to appreciate. In a mood not quite different from your every day mood, this album will guide your thought flow. I love the album cover no less than I love this disc. Now, I'll discuss my favourite songs. Breathing seems to stand out because of it's unquestionable unconditionality in love, Hanging By A Moment was the popular single all 20 somethings still linger to, Sick Cycle Carousel was the vocalist's anthem for his girlfriend who he later married (sounds a bit too happy? Try hearing the song) , Somewhere in Between reminds me of a bridge over water that my city never had while "Everything" is *sigh* inducing in it's listless scope.

"There is in me as there is in you, a morbid belief in Lifehouse."

5 out of 5 stars Soooo Good!.......2007-03-14

This album is packed with awesome songs. In fact, I love this album so much that I bought it a second time when the first CD I had was too scratched to listen too. "No Name Face" is Lifehouse's best work indeed. Unlike other albums, I will always be able to pop this in my cd player anytime and enjoy it just as much as I did when it first was released! It never gets old! If you haven't listened to Lifehouse much, buy this album first! It's the best one they've done!

5 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2007-01-31

So, your thinking, 'Should I or Shouldn't I buy this one?'. You should. Its Lifehouses best work and you'd be a fool not to own it!
'Hanging By A Moment' is a great opener, but not the best song on the album. 'Everything' is the best in my opinion, especially the build up to it, you can really feel the energy these guys put into their music with this song.
From the beginning of the Album to the end, theres not a track you would not want to listen to. I recommend for the new listener to Lifehouse to buy this Album and then buy 'Stanley Climbfall' and 'Lifehouse'. Hopegfully the fourth album coming up will be just as good as the current works.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's.......2007-05-31

Best Lifehouse CD to date. It's a totally different sound- but don't be disappointed. Lifehouse started working with some of the same guys who works with John Mayer, and DMB....so naturally there is a totally different sound- less rock, more alternative, but easier listening. I think they'll find a more loyal music crowd in a rapid changing rock scene with this album. Honestly, I can listen to this CD over and over. There are some amazing lyrics on here, and beautiful music- not to mention the voices.

3 out of 5 stars The group's best since "No Name Face".......2007-04-30

Lifehouse returned after three years with their third album, titled simply "Lifehouse." Perhaps the group, fronted by guitarist and lead vocalist Jason Wade, chose to self-title the album as a way of signaling a fresh start with Geffen Records. A fresh start is something the band could've used after their sophomore effort, 2002's "Stanley Climbfall," received rather sour reviews from critics as well as legions of the band's very dedicated fans, and as far as fresh starts go, "Lifehouse" is a fine one indeed. Wade and the gang, which includes new bass man Bryce Soderberg (replacing Sergio Andrade), return remarkably more mature than when last we heard them. Their considerably more mellow new sound is also a far cry from the razor-edged passion heard on their previous albums, but it's a welcome change, finally drawing Lifehouse out of the shadow of post-grunge bands like Creed.

The hit single "You and Me" is the most laid-back (and, clearly, popular) of the album's songs, but constant radio play has gradually decreased the ballad's inherent beauty. More beautiful, however, is the opening track, "Come Back Down," which showcases the new, dreamy sound of Wade's guitar. "Blind" is another highlight, a strong and sincere ode to Wade's deceased father. It's interesting to note that Wade's lyrics, which previously dealt primarily with his faith in God, have now shed most (if not all) of their religious meaning and have come to revolve mostly around the challenges of everyday life and, occasionally, romance. Though each of the record's songs have their own merits, chiefly some heavenly and soaring vocals by Wade, there aren't as many knockout tracks as there was on the group's excellent debut, "No Name Face," or even on "Stanley Climbfall." In fact, other than the aforementioned tracks, only the dreamily entrancing "Walking Away" comes to mind as one of "Lifehouse"'s highlights. Nevertheless, none of the tracks are bad or even dull, and those who enjoyed the band's previous efforts will have no problem getting into the music.

On the whole, though "Lifehouse" isn't as great as the band's debut, it's certainly their best recording since that album. Wade and the gang have returned more mature and mellow, and at last can stand on their own as a group. To those who enjoyed "No Name Face" and/or "Stanley Climbfall," I would recommend "Lifehouse," and for Lifehouse fans (of which I am most certainly one), this album is essential, and a lovely way to pass the time until the release of the group's senior album.

4 out of 5 stars A change of direction for the band.......2006-12-03

Like most bands- Lifehouse have taken a slightly different approach to their third album. A lot slower and more accoustic, they still sound excellent, with Jason's songwriting at his best on this record. Featuring many ballads, the best songs on this record are 'Come Back Down', 'Blind', 'All in All', 'Into the Sun' and 'Walking Away'.
With the addition of Bryce Soderberg on bass, Lifehouse sound like a more complete band now and I am desperately looking forward to their fourth release which apparently is more piano driven.
Overall, it is hard to compare this album with their first two as it vastly different in so many ways, but shows a lot of maturity in both the songwriting and the performance. Depending on what mood I'm in, this can be my favourite Lifehouse record, or my least favourite. But whatever the mood, it is still a very good album and will hold its own place in the Lifehouse catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Catchy, simple, simply enjoyable!.......2006-11-10

This is just your typical lifehouse album; catchy lyrics and melodies, songs that can go with any type of mood, and with extras like videos. An invaluavle item.

When you come up with the most-played radio hit of the year, there is no need to wrack your brains for a follow-up. Lifehouse, who earned such a distinction with 2001's highly addictive "Hanging by a Moment," shrewdly stick to the emotional guitar-rock palette of that breakthrough single for most of their second album. "I wouldn't change a thing," frontman Jason Wade declares on the searing "Spin," and the band follows through on powerful, life-affirming tracks such as "Wash" and "Take Me Away." Produced by Ron Aniello (Days of the New), mixed by Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, U2), and written primarily between tours, this is the kind of ambitious and endearing album that suggests its makers won't settle for anything less than global domination. --Aidin Vazari

5 out of 5 stars Lifehouse Asserts Itself with Sophomore Effort.......2007-05-23

The boys of Lifehouse were left with quite a daunting task when they began recording their second album, the follow up to the multi-platinum debut "No Name Face" which included the most played song of the year 2001, "Hanging By A Moment." Lead singer Jason Wade penned most of the tunes for "Stanley" on the tourbus between shows. The result is a finely crafted piece of rock and roll melted together with dashes of adult contemporary and pop music. The cd plays out like this:

1. Spin- 8/10 rating
First single off the album. A catchy tune with a rockin hook but one could do without the singing during the bridge and the lengthy instrumental at the end of the song that the radio cuts out.

2. Wash- 7/10 rating
A solid tune that starts out with a distorted guitar and builds up to a catchy chorus.

3. Sky Is Falling- 8/10 rating
Very melodic and beautiful song.

4. Anchor- 6/10 rating
This song is good, but one can become lost in the chorus when Wade becomes very difficult to understand, not one of the best songs on the album.

5. Am I Ever Gonna Find Out- 7/10 rating
A forceful song that ends as quickly as it begins. A new sound for Lifehouse on this song, and a good one at that.

6. Stanley Climbfall- 10/10 rating
A beautiful ballad, this song is flawless both musically and lyrically. Possibly the best song on the album.

7. Out Of Breath- 8/10 rating
Similar to the smash "Hanging By a Moment" as far as tempo is concerned, this is another catchy rock tune from the boys.

8. Just Another Name- 6/10 rating
Not one of the best songs on the album, this mid-tempo tune loses the listener in the boring chorus.

9. Take Me Away- 10/10 rating
The second single off the album, this is another masterpiece from Lifehouse. Rivals "Stanley Climbfall" as the best track on the cd.

10. My Precious- 6/10 rating
A dull song that Wade wrote in a similar way to "Hanging By a Moment" where he wrote it during the recording of this album. Too bad the result of this song wasn't as successful.

11. Empty Space- 9/10 rating
Beautiful ballad with wonderful lyrics.

12. The Beginning- 9/10 rating
Another wonderful song that builds up to a strong bridge.

13. How Long- 9/10 rating
A great bonus song about the 9/11 attacks, this song shows off the emotinal side of Lifehouse.

14. Sky Is Falling (Acoustic)- 8/10 rating
Great rendition of a great song

Overall, this is a marvelous cd from the boys of Lifehouse. Although they may not garner as much airplay with any of these songs as they did with the freakishly popular smash "Hanging by a Moment," this cd will get its share of radio hits and will help further the career of these talented musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2007-01-31

An impressive follow up to their debut album 'No Name Face', 'Take me Away' and 'Spin' are the two popular songs on the Album. Coming back from a big hit album such as 'No Name Face' is really hard but 'Lifehouse' have made a good effort, for a new fan I would recommend you buy the first album before this one because its one you can play over and over again.
After the success of 'No Name Face', I had pretty high expectations of 'Lifehouse' but this one just didn't seem to live up to those expectations. In that respect I would get the third album 'Lifehouse' before this one because the band grew older with their melodies and matures more. This album won't leave you feeling satisfied as a customer if you are new to 'Lifehouse'.

4 out of 5 stars Take Me Away.......2006-12-03

While the songs may not be as powerful as the first album 'No name Face', this is still a very good second effort. Most bands after receiving such critical appraise after such a huge selling debut, then to get complacent and lose their way with their follow-up record, but this is still the Lifehouse sound you would expect with beautiful, spiritual lyrics and a mellow, soft-rock sound. The singles 'Spin' and 'Take me away' are very good along with standout tracks 'Wash', 'Anchor', 'The beginning' and the title track 'Stanley climbfall'. Jason's voice is at his soulfull best, the production and mixing is spot on and the drumming has improved with the addition of Rick Woolstenhulme to the band. A worthy purchase, fans will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Lifehouse' Climb Doesn't Fall.......2006-09-29

In late 2003, the pop rockers Lifehouse, returned to the music scene with their second album STANLEY CLIMBFALL. Their new product was by far some of the rock band's best work. Vocals were incredibly melodic, the rhythm section wasn't over powering, and the entire album just had amazing musical traits. STANLEY CLIMBFALL opens with a good rock dance tune, and soon becomes a collection of powerful rock ballads. The progressions to the songs are not much more than the standard I-IV-V, but there is a reason why that progression is so popular and it works perfectly with the pieces of this album. The band is built from the drums keeping perfect time and the bass as the melodic foundation so the guitars and vocalist can lay out their amazing performance. Everything played by these instruments are so independent from each other but the counterpoint is crafted so well, that the pieces are just outstanding. Dynmaics are a major key to these songs as they should be for any piece, but Lifehouse performs this musical aspect perfectly. STANLEY CLIMBFALL is a great piece of work and one to add to any music collection.

Stand out tracks include:
"Spin"
"Wash"
"Sky Is Falling"
"Stanley Climbfall"
"Take Me Away"

5 out of 5 stars Stanley Climbfall - Going from strength to strength.......2005-02-17

I will admit that I am biased. I have purchased both the promo CD of Bliss Dyffs Lucky Day as well as No Name Face and became an addicted outright fan of Lifehouse. A day does not go by that I do not listen to the songs of Lifehouse. I was glad when Lifehouse brought out their third CD "Stanley Climbfall", and looked forward to it with great expectation.
And I was not disappointed one little bit. Lifehouse has gone from strength to strength and built on the success from the other two albums. It is their coming of age in the music scene. All the songs on this album just like No Name Face are enjoyable to listen to and have a intrinsic meaning to them and are sung by Jason Wade with a gusto that belies his years.
The songs that stand out are 3. Sky Is Falling, 9. Take Me Away and the two bonus tracks of How Long? and the Beginning took my breath away. The music of Lifehouse to me is important and will remain so for a long time to come. It gives me strength in times of weakness and pain and brings me smiles in times when things look down.

Ok, Lifehouse just gets better and better all time! This cd blows me away! It's so full of emotion. One of my absolute favorite songs is "Take me away". That song chokes me up everytime, a lot of times I cry. It's so wonderfully crafted, and sung. The whole cd is pure ear candy to me. I just don't know what else to say, it leaves me speechless! Lifehouse rules!!

5 out of 5 stars Not "No Name Face", but good anyway.......2005-01-22

I just got this last Jan. 14th, and pretty much listened to it for one week straight. And I said, "Why didn't I discover this album sooner?"

I was initially under the impression that "Stanley Climbfall" didn't measure up to its predecessor "No Name Face" because it wasn't as popular. But when I heard the CD, I learned that Lifehouse did retain its edge after all.

The first track is "Spin", which I think was the only "Stanley Climbfall" song that was as widely recognizable as the big NNF hits like "Hanging by a Moment", "Sick Cycle Carousel" & "Breathing". This song is so pulsatingly good, it pulls you in so you can hear the whole album. Nice.

I really loved the songs "Wash", "Am I ever gonna find out", "Stanley Climbfall", "The Beginning" and of course "Sky is Falling". If there was an american music award for most artfully written lyrics, of course these guys'd take the cake. The add-on tracks, "How Long" and the acoustic "Sky is Falling", make for lovely bonuses too. Some of the other songs don't have as much lasting power as the NNF songs, and other widely-known alternative hits for the matter, but the Lifehouse signature style is still there.

Flipping through the CD inlay may be a bit baffling, but then these guys are making an artistic statement.

"Stanley Climbfall": not the greatest alternative album in the world, but still worth a listen. Just say no to musical crud.

5 out of 5 stars Great + Extra Tracks = Extra Great.......2005-01-07

Lifehouse plays like every other post 90's boy band with heavy radio airplay. They have not revolutionized anything, they have not introduced anything new, they really don't stand out in any unique way. That being said, they are very good at what they do, which is to stay perfecting the typical sound.

Lifehouse at its core is a very formulaic rock structure not unlike the hundreds of bands that were formed after the mainstream success of Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters, etc. The structure of every song is a predictable derivative of ABACAB. This unfortunately means that many people will too quickly write this band off, when closer inspection will reveal something very surprising underneath. While Lifehouse is just another band using ABACAB, they do it better than most bands out there.

It is because of the sound they chose being so popular among bands that they are forced to do it better than the rest. It is because they do it better than the rest that, even though they are not unique at what they do, they are one of the best at it. Their lyrics are not unprecidented, yet they will stick in your mind. The guitar solos are not exactly complex, yet you hear more to the music than the notes they play.

In my opinion, part of this success is due to exactly the same reason others will denounce it. That is, we have all heard this sound so many times before that we expect a certain feel to come from it--and then Lifehouse delivers. We know the formulas so well that we expect B to follow A, then A again, then C, but Lifehouse manages to please you by causing you to anticipate a certain pattern--and then Lifehouse delivers. I am not trying to imply an evil master strategy or psychology from 1984, but Lifehouse knows what we like from past precident--and then Lifehouse delivers.

Jason Wade's vocals take on the typical angst-ridden boy band lead vocals, but you can hear gems scattered throughout the songs that have to have been inspired by Van Morrison and Eddie Vedder. Wade's vocals are another instrument in the mix that plays to peak performance where it needs to.

Given the talent shown in the first two albums, I see no reason why they cannot continue to be a great success for years to come as long as they do three things: 1) Stay together, because too many bands that could have been something self-destructed when success was near. 2) Evolve with the style of the times, even if only slightly to maintain the fans they already have. 3) Keep writing music, because they are in that perilous area right now where they can be easily forgotten if they don't fight for the limelight.

It is truly a surprise to find such a talented band on the inside that only appears at first glance to be just another typical band.

The story behind Lifehouse is so protracted and convoluted that the shelved Who project has taken on a mythic stature that rivals that of the great, lost Beach Boys' magnum opus, Smile. Suffice to say, Pete Townshend's brainchild was conceived as an ultra-ambitious post-Tommy/pre-Quadrophenia concept album, but was shelved in the early '70s. Some of its songs turned up in Who's Next ("Baba O'Riley," "Getting in Tune," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Behind Blue Eyes," "Song is Over"); others surfaced in Townshend's 1972 solo debut, Who Came Fist ("Pure and Easy," "Let's See Action"). Meanwhile, Townshend continued to expand and fine-tune his rock opera, a sci-fi saga about music's ability to unify... or something like that. Finally, 30 years after its conception, Lifehouse resurfaces, spread over six discs (available only through Townshend's Web site) or in an abridged form here as Lifehouse Elements.

Containing all the aforementioned tunes ("Baba O'Riley" is given orchestral and ambient treatments) plus Who Are You's title track and "New Song," Elements is rife with classic-rock touchstones, albeit with alien arrangements. But Elements may prove problematic for more casual listeners. Townshend strains vocally; one can't help but recall the power of the Who's Next songs and find these wanting. Finally, Elements really sounds like a collection of songs--an acute flaw in a concept album. Ah, but what songs. It all makes one ponder how rock history would be different if Townshend had pulled his pet project together in the heyday of the Who. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic glimpse of one of rock's finest songwriters (probably the best).......2005-08-23

If you like this disc, it is your duty as a Pete Townshend fan to buy the boxed set. I saved up for months when I was 14 to slam down 100 American bucks so I could import this beast, and it was worth every cent. I might be a bit of a fanatic, but even Mr. Townshend's demos are nothing short of excellent. Pete's voice may not be as raw and rocking as Roger's, but with the demos you hear the words straight from the songwriter's mouth, and you can tell he means them. The only other time i've heard this much passion in a record was in the Velvet Underground records, and the simplistic drumming and bass playing (at least compared to Keith and John, RIP) doesn't really bother me much just because great songwriters like Lou Reed and Pete Townshend don't need instrumental fireworks to make a song great. Hopefully my review isn't rated a certain way just because I like the Velvets, Pete is certainly a superior songwriter than Lou, but they both have an honest, truthful, human quality to their music. The orchestral version of Baba O' Riley brings the minimalism aspect of the song to the forefont, making for an interesting listening, and I actually enjoy the new version of Who Are You. The rap part could've been a lot worse, and the words do make some sense after hearing the radio play that's in the boxed set. Baba M1 is a bit of a dud, a nice bit of ambient music I suppose. Any fan of Pete Townshend would enjoy this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Lifehouse Chronicles Sampler Disc........2005-06-21

Lifehouse Elements disc is a sampler of the huge five disc set of music that you can get from the man himself. These demos and alternate versions were supposed to be on the Life House album. The album was supposed to take place in a post-apocalyptic world were people cannot leave their homes because of the deadly enviroment. They are issued life suits and they're connect to an information super highway. The suits give the wearer their entertainment and
a virtual landscape they can play in. But a hacker breaks into the system telling it's wearers to come to a place called the Life house were the ultimate concert will be held. The attendees will become one with themselves and with the music. The band is The Who of course.

But that project never left the planning stages. So years later, Pete Townshend completed the project (sort of) and the BBC made the music into a radio play. the sucess of the play got Pete to take the Lifehouse project on the road and performed it live. He also played around with orchestra arrangements.

The tracks on the disc are taken from different disc on the set. Most of the tracks are demos that Pete Townshend recorded himself. He plays all the instrument and sings on all of them. The heart and soul he poured intot his project is amusing. They're even better than the finished product (in my opinion). If you enjoyed this disc them by all means get the box set. It's pricey but it's worth it.

Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars a bit of this and that..........2004-11-13

This disc isn't quite the knockout punch I was hoping for when it came out - I've always considered the Lifehouse-era songs to be perhaps Pete's greatest artistic achievement (though not neccessarily the Who's finest moment). I've alway hoped these songs would appear in a more cohesive form. I haven't heard the full box set, so perhaps it may be more reveletory.

The main reason to get this disc in my opinion is the new recordings - the orchestral "Baba O'Reilly" is quite good, and the remake of "Who Are You" is stunning - like hearing the song again for the first time. "I CAN JUST ABOUT REMEMBER WHO I AM!!" shouts the singer, sounding more riled up than he has in years. And he even manages, against the odds, to breathe life into that most overworn of Who chestnuts, "Behind Blue Eyes", with an accoustic reading that conveys all the fatigue, determination, remorse, and defiance of the song.

The remainder of the recordings are demos from the 70's. Most are quite fully produced, and professional sounding, but they're a bit workmanlike, and don't always measure up to the sonic spectacle of the band's versions. Perhaps the best of the bunch is "New Song" - I always thought the group's version was a tad slick, and Townshend sings it here with a real passion.

So do you need to own this? Well, heck, if you're enough of a Pete/Who fan to be reading this, the answer is probably yes.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Excerpt, From a Fantastic Boxset.......2004-04-25

LIFEHOUSE CHRONICLES, available exclusively on Pete Townshend's e-commerce site, is an expansive documentation of the composer's lost dream child, "Lifehouse". It works mainly because of its length, at 6 discs - two containing demos, two containing new revisions of old songs, and two containing a BBC radio play.

Naturally, it is exceedingly hard to condense the piece into a single CD. While the demos on ELEMENTS are terrific, the demos excised are even better. Townshend's solo versions of "Relay", "I Don't Know Myself" and "Sister Disco" have to be heard to be believed.

Luckily, the album kept the new versions of "Who are You" and "Behind Blue Eyes". Pete Townshend always managed to sound more sincere as a vocalist than Roger Daltrey and that comes through on both of these tracks. Also, the loud, abrasive guitar on the former is a great compliment to the song.

The reasons for this single CD version are, of course, to provide the mild fan with something - but for Who fans, CHRONICLES is worth the extra scratch.

5 out of 5 stars They're back!.......2005-08-30

I know that a lot of people did not like Stanley Climbfall that much. Don't know why. I personally love it. I even nicknamed my new puppy after a song on it. But this CD is just amazing! Today rocks, and I'm not just saying that. It's so cool! And all the other songs are just so incredibly cool! I got a crush on No Name Face, fell head-over-heels for Stanley Climbfall, and am now totally and completely in love. Thank you, Lifehouse, for your amazing music that has impacted me so much. You guys rock!

5 out of 5 stars Lifehouse Cd is Awesome.......2005-08-12

The Lifehouse CD that I ordered is awesome. It was a little pricey, so in the beginning I was a little worried. However, it was well worth the money. I truly enjoy it and listen to it everyday. I will definitely get my monies worth out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Get the Import!!!!.......2005-04-19

This is an excellent album, and the band is tight and moving into new sounds and new directions. See my other review for the domestic release for more info. This import version is well worth the extra cost for a Lifehouse fan, however. The extra two tracks are astounding, and the second, "Along the Way," is beyond breathtaking. It is by far my favorite Lifehouse single to date - and Wade has never sounded better. The import is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Lifehouse - The CD that made the Band.......2005-01-06

It was the song Simon and Everything that made me a instant fan of Lifehouse and got me to buy the 3 CDs of Lifehouse. I am not dissapointed at all. This relatively young band is on a path of success with Jason Wade having a voice that you could kill for and a highly intelligent band that give Wade the escape through which he can weave almost miracle lyrics.
This album is one of the best I have heard and every song is good, even the 2 extra hard to get songs. My favourite song of Lifehouse is from this album and it is the aforementioned Simon. I could immediately relate to the song and it's lyrics from the first moment of hearing it. It is sung with a innocence that is truly magical. Well done Lifehouse for one great CD full of great songs and beats.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love em!.......2003-06-25

Lifehouse is the best raw music you have ever heard. It is their own sound blended with talent.

5 out of 5 stars The best cd you can buy.......2002-09-03

ALthoug I have heard comments about how Hangin by a Moment
is over played, I never tire of hearing that song or ANY
of the songs on this CD. I am constantly listening to it.
The lyrics are so diverse and cover a large array of emotions.
Plus the vocals are deep and soulful. I would definately
reccomend this cd to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars incredible music!.......2002-07-30

Buy it, listen to it, and tell your friends....I don't seem to be getting tired of this CD, although I play it very often! The last time I said that was with Santanas Supernatural.
