Nothing standout!.......2007-07-11
After making a mockery of the score to Terminator 3 and acknowledging Brad Fiedel's great theme only once in a Casio Midi-file quality track over the closing credits, you really have to wonder why Fox would give the scoring duties of LFODH to Marco Beltrami. With Michael Kamen no longer with us there are a number of better composers who could have made this score something special. As it is, it's just competent.
Beltrami only uses Kamen's fourth most reoccurring motif from the original film and uses a tiny bit of score from Die Hard 2...and that's it. The rest is all his work and it's just the usual action bombastics without a hint of class or anything memorable. What about all those cool signature cues from the previous films, such as McClane making the bomb to throw down the elevator shaft, McClane spying on Hans and Takagi, the rooftop fight, the computers room shootout, the runway hatch, the ejector seat, the wing fight and that brilliant cue where Hans falls to his death? Where are all these? All Beltrami offers us is generic action stuff which works fine but is nothing memorable.
If Chris Young, Alan Silvestri, Debbie Wiseman, Bruce Broughton or Craig Armstrong were given this movie to score then you can better your bottom dollar it would have been brilliant. As it is, it's is merely a workable score that will be forgotten very quickly.
Best Action Movie of the Summer 2007!!!!.......2007-06-27
I know this is for the audio cd, but I couldn't find a space to say something about the movie. Just got back from a midnight showing and it was the best expierience. This movie has it all and the action is just great. Its really worth the ten bucks. This isn't no costume or pirate crap. This is the real deal. Can't wait till the dvd comes out and we can see the unrated version!!!!

Customer Reviews:
some brilliant renditions, but can't quite all mix together.......2006-10-19
I like the spirit of this album, which is to let the music of Kurt Weill attach itself to the many worlds it came from. This was classical music that also used elements of popular music at the time, all with a very dark and almost mechanical tone. So it would seem fitting to have exquisite voices like Teresa Stratas rub elbows with darker elements like Nick Cave in this collection. There are also the jazz influences developed by Charlie Haden and Betty Carter.
In all, there are some brilliant interpretations of Weill here. I am a fan of Cave's "Mack the Knife" and David Johansen's "Alabama Song," and how can someone NOT like Lotte Lenya herself on "Pirate Jenny" and the drolling of the immortal William S. Burroughs talking through "What Keeps Mankind Alive?"
But other tracks feel to be just too short of brilliance. I love that Lou Reed tries to turn "September Song" into a kind of rock ballad, almost a VU "It Was a Pretty Good Year," but the rendition seems a little short of energy and falls flat after a while. Elvis Costello, though magnificent as an overall artist, just doesn't bring new life to "Lost in the Stars."
Perhaps the problem in the end that the choices were a little too much of the Top 40 Weill (if there really can be such a term). These are songs that have for a long time been regarded as the best of Weill, and it might have furthered the purpose of his music to find new gems and bring them into the sunlight.
Cool and Camp.......2006-08-24
This is a very biased review- I originally had much of Weill's work on cassette tape- way back in the olden days- before CD's- so I am already very partial to many of the tracks on this CD- I would recommend it not only to Kurt Weill fans, and the fans of the various artists featured, but I would also strongly recommend this to anyone who likes artsy, camp, fun burlesque, Bohemian European stuff. The record, even though performed by contemporary artists still retains much of it's zeitgeist, it evokes the era in which Weill was writing and it rounds out any great eclectic record collection. It's a great musical discovery for fans of all sorts of genres, and EVERYONE should own at least one recorded arrangement of "Mack The Knife". (You know, for parties and stuff!)
September Song Music of Kurt Weill.......2006-08-22
Songs from the film-documentary done by various artists. Excellent choice if you like Mr Weill's music. I saw the film and always wanted the CD. Now I have and I recommend it highly.
It's a long time between January and December.......2004-06-11
Kurt Weill is one of those composers who juggles Jewish angst with Catholic guilt: and possibly vice versa. As a collection, it is nonpareil. Each interpretation becomes a definitive reading of the "song". Lord, it is one of the best assemblies of contemporary artists going. Lou couldn't be better; Ms O'Hara, in fine form, performs her deranged puppet-dance to the X. OK. An unknown. Roping-in, such a postmodern figure as, well, you-know-who, to orate Weill's lyrics is never less than exceptional. An amazing collection. Is there a DVD?
Paul
Ain't we Hip?!!?.......2003-07-23
This is the avant version of these songs, everything done with that Downtown fingers-across-the-blackboard screech. They even got Johanson doing it, which is no less than amazing. The sole exception is the Persuasions' "O Heavenly Salvation", but one song does not an album make.
The mystery here is that there's a perfectly good compilation from the 80s, "Lost in the Stars: the Music of Kurt Weill", featuring many of the same songs--and, if I'm not mistaken some of the same performers. That's the one you want. Too bad it's OP.

Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.
A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Don't get ripped off.......2006-10-21
Well...I have only one thing to say about this soundtrack selection. Whoever created this soundtrack was on "CRACK!" and needs to be removed from the music industry. I mean how can the "Main" score in the movie not in the soundtrack selection? This is like going to Disneyland and not see Mickey but Bugs Bunny? (No ofense to Bugs. I love you :p) Too bad I found this review way too late till after I have purchased it. (for $0.01) I think this soundtrack ain't worth listening to or better yet...to be looked at. For the price I've paid, I think I got ripped off.
BTW if anyone know where I can get my hands on the movie version of "When Johnny came marching Home" the acoustic version and also the Man's Chore version. Please share with the world. I think the people of the world will be very happy to find that someone do care for another's love for "GOOD MUSIC". :D
Warning.......2003-04-30
A collection of "ethnic" rap tunes and some poorly played classical pieces are the sum total of this horrible CD. Be warned that in the movie "When Johnny Came Marching Home" is played continuously but is no where to be found in the Soundtrack.
While the soundtrack does have Beethoven's 9th symphony it is played so horribly that it does not make this a worthy purchase.
Buyer beware.
Kamen with a vengeance.......2003-03-13
The best way to describe the music in this score is to listen to Die Hard 2: Die Harder, as a lot of the material used in that score is used in this one. With under 30 minutes of score, most of the music consists of songs and 2 lengthy classical pieces by Brahms and Beethoven. "Goodbye Bonwits" is mainly ominous in nature with hints of the Die Hard theme. "John and Zeus" begins like the last one, but then goes into action mode with racing strings. "Papaya King" contains lots of strings, some low-key pianos, and quotes of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" by the brass. "Take A-Nother Train" quotes the famous Die Hard theme again and contains loads of powerful brass and driving string rhythms. "Waltz of the Bankers" contains ominous strings and flute rhythms played over marching snare drums. "Gold Vault" is almost mickey-moused sounding at the beginning, but then goes into Kamen's usual punctuating strings. "Surfing the Aquaduct" is an exciting action cue that is very reminiscent of many of the action cues in "Die Hard 2: Die Harder", with frantic strings, pounding brass quoting the Die Hard theme, and driving percussion. A nice edition to this score is a classical piece by Alexi Mosolov titled, "The Iron Foundry", which is an exciting orchestral work that sounds a lot like something Michael Kamen would write. The songs can basically be forgotten, except for "Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful. Overall, a great score, while not as good as the other two, still holds its ground and sounds great outside the film.
A poor soundtrack.......2002-03-25
For some reason this soundtrack has completely missed the mark. There are some songs on it, but mostly rap, (Thank god they included Summer In The City by The Loving Spoonful), some classical pieces, but I don't recall Beethoven's Ninth being in the movie, and some additional score. If you're looking for a soundtrack with a cool collection of songs, you're in the wrong place. If you're a "real" soundtrack collector, you'll be disappointed that the "Ants Go Marching" theme, which was featured so prominently in the film, can't be found anywhere on this soundtrack.
About half the CD consists of score, and since the original "Die Hard" album was never commercially released ... the only real reason for buying this album is to get as much of the legendary "Die Hard" score as possible... And now they've even stopped printing this album...
This was the best of the 3.......1999-07-15
This was the only one of the three movies that I think had a good soundtrack. It had some good rap songs like "Summer in the City" and I don't usualy like rap too much. The soundtrack is one of the better ones but still does not get much recognition.

resently married. one of my husband and my interest is music. He has turned me on to Camel, triumvirat, David Gillmore ect... Which in turn i have turned him on to some of my music, New Radicals, Keb 'Mo, Todd Rungren. Our musical interest is wide, and we appreciate all varitys of music. We were both excited to find Triumvirat. Can not wait to receive it
Good piece of music.......2005-12-04
This album is progressive rock music. However, there is some mainstream catchiness to it nonetheless. The vocal numbers tend to either uptempo numbers, like The history of mystery, or plaintive piano ballads, like 'Cold old worried lady', which is suicidal.
The instrumental parts alternate between softer, piano driven parts to uptempo, energetic bits full of synthesiser imagery and sonic audio soundscapes. Despite this being a German Band, the lyrics are in English, as sung by Barry Palmer. The music is written by the band's keyboardist, Fritz. His piano playing has a classical orientation. The instrumental parts to 'History of mystery' has an almost disco beat to it, but the vocal parts, especially with the driven delivery, have a rock feeling to them. There is quite a bit of improvised soloing on the record. My favourite track is 'a day in the live', it begins as spaced-out synth driven psychedelia, then there's some classical piano that's very beautiful and then finale is a bit rocking. The song is actually divided into three part. The music is all very good and some of it is quite original, and you can understand most of the lyrics that are sung, so I'd rate it somewhere around 4/5.
2nd. position.......2003-03-07
"Illusions in a Double Dimple" is the best album recorded by Triumvirat, and "Old Loves Die Hard" ranks at the second position in that list. Helmut Köllen went out to pursue a solo career (unfortunately, he had just completed his first solo album when he died), and was replaced by Dick Frangenberg (the original bass player) and English singer Barry Palmer. Highlights: the title track (beautiful), "A Cold Worried Lady" (moving), "A Day in the Life" (amazing).
The best album of Triumvirat without Helmut Kollen.......2003-02-07
When i was 7 years old i listened bands like Deep Purple, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Kiss (!). Then, one day, when i was lookin for a LP of Kiss, my cousins found an album of a rare German Band called Triumvirat. Then they (my cousins) known the progressive rock but i didn't. For recomendation of my cousins i bought the album with the title "Old Loves Die Hard". That was my first contact with the wonderful world of the Progressive Rock. Twenty seven years after i love this album yet. With the internet and more sites of information about the progressive rock i can know more this wonderful band. Although the masterpieces more recognized are Illusions on a Double.. and Spartacus, this album is excellent. Maybe more commercial, whatever the composition and perfomance are of very high quality. Moreover, the production is better that his predecessors Spartacus and Illusions.. The highlights of the album are "Panic On 5th Avenue" and "The History of Mystery" (Part one and two), whatever the instrumental "A Day In A Life" is a track very nice and one of my favourites of all times, soft at the beginning and hard at the final. The album hold the classic style of triumvirat, finest symphonic rock. Curiosly this band wasn't supported in Europe in his time, I'm not sure what is the cause (a poor Clon of ELP?, to me this point of view is very very bad, terrible and very poor to describe Triumvirat). I though that is time to justice for Triumvirat (with the help of EMI with the reissue of the early collection) and finally to be recognized like THE GREATEST BAND OF GERMAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK (Triumvirat is my Top Ten of best band of Progressive Rock of all times). I recommend this album to all fan of progressive rock, specialy for those about to symphonic rock. For last, the only disappointment is the change of the artwork. Personally i prefer thousand times the original artwork with the cover with the little white rat observed with a magnifying glass.

still has the goods.......2006-05-10
you will like this album if you are more into the heavier mountain sound as mr. west still has the goods both vocally and guitar wise. songs like i'm ready and don't start me talking stay in a more traditional blues form with west playing some tasty guitar.i agree that some songs the guitar tone is less than stellar but overall a worthy effort.
Highly disappointing.......2005-11-14
Brief flashes of the Leslie West I remember, occasional glimpses of his blues prowess. But the satisfying moments on this disc are too few and too far between. I rate it "a complete waste of money".
blues died.......2005-09-30
Leslie West did his best, a little weak, fine for the meak,There is better out there, short of a six pack maybe just a beer.
Gloriously Disturbed.......2005-09-30
This is The Blues baby.
If your Mom and Dad brought you to the concert now is the time to tell them to go on home 'cuz we gonna kick out the jams, disturb your mind and kick your ass with The Blues.
Long-neck bottles, sly-looking women, cars that go faster than they look - and Leslie West is eyeballing your mama - so you better ante up and keep your cards close to your vest 'cuz - Baby! ...this IS the blooze!
This will smoke your shorts.......2004-11-06
Whatever "it" is, Mountain man Leslie West still has it. There's some seriously kickin guitar work here to go along with Leslie "sound of pure evil" vocals. I don't understand why he's not getting the same exposure as other supposed guitar heroes. Labels should be beating down his door and offering him the chance to rip it up in the studio every month without fail. Blues fans should be worshipping at the alter of the Great Not As Fatsby. Virgins should be dancing and the little children laughing and playing in the streets. This is the blues, baby!

Since the early 1980s, George Thorogood has delivered heart-felt tributes to his favored blues and rockabilly artists, and he's continued along this expected path with Ride `Til I Die. Warm and deeply affectionate covers of Bo Diddley's "You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care)," Eddie Cochran's "My Way," and, of course, John Lee Hooker's "Ride 'Til I Die," demonstrate that Thorogood is in fine form, his trademark slide guitar warring with a squealing sax over a pumping blues grind. "American Made" is a sure-fire crowd pleaser; "She's Gone" is a dirty stomper that recalls his biggest hit, "Bad to the Bone"; while the closing title track is an evolving acoustic number punctuated by sudden electric wails. Unlike pop stars, bluesmen often benefit from the passing of time; it lends them weight and gravitas. Thorogood is no exception. He'll peak late--and he's pretty damn good now. --Dominic Wills

Lonesome George Discovers Viagra.......2004-09-13
I've been a fan of the Destroyers for a long time ... since hearing them rip through "I'm Wanted" on stage on a hot summer night at the old Country Club in Reseda.
When they're on, no one rocks like the Destroyers.
But over time, the Destroyers lost their edge. Their studio recordings were spotty ... sometimes lacking the energy, focus, and spirit of their earlier work. And I have yet to hear a live CD that can match some of their earlier bootleg recordings.
All that has changed.
I dunno what happened here. It could be Jimmy Suhler's driving rhythm guitar. It could be great engineering. It could be the little blue pill has found it's way into Thorogood's medicine cabinet.
Whatever it is, it doesn't matter. What matters is on the CD, and on that score, this one has it where it counts. This is one great rock n' roll record.
Take a quick MP3 tour and hear it for yourself. Don't miss "She's Gone", "You Don't Love Me, You Don't Care", and "Greedy Man". And don't leave without sampling a bit of Chuck Berry's "Move It".
And here's a special note to the snobs who dismiss Thorogood as the "Cheez Wiz" of blues and rock n' roll:
Pass me the nachos on your way out.
Safe and Disappointing.......2004-08-02
I love George Thorogood. I do not love this album.
The song structures are unimaginative, the playing is paint by numbers, and the vocals are uninspired.
Spend your money on one of his earlier albums.
Best effort ever!!.......2003-06-03
I'm one of the biggest Thorogood freaks in the country, having seen the band in concert around 56 times since the late 80s all over the midwest. But although I do listen to some studio album tracks of his, it was always his CONCERTS that used to make me drive hours and hours, miles and miles across endless blue highways and major interstates to hear songs of George's LIVE. His shows were always loud, ferocious, and George's wildman antics on stage such as playing guitar over his head, twirling around the stage, dropping down to one knee and hoisting the mike stand up and out into the roaring crowds were a million, no, a BILLION miles away from the limited slow songs that we hear repeatedly on the radio, such as I Drink Alone and Bad to the Bone. However, always one to support my favorite band in the world, I went out and dutifly picked up his latest CD, Ride Til I Die. I can, in all honesty, say that this CD(especially with the addition of Thorogood's new rhythm guitarist Jim Suhler), measures up to the same qualities of the live shows. The production is crystal sharp, George's guitar work is as good as it's ever been, the song selection is phenomenal! Thorogood's guitarist, Jim Suhler, is as accomplished a guitarist as they come and adds some very, very interesting solos and rhythm guitar work that, combined with Thorogood's slide and powerhouse style, makes the Destroyers unstoppable now on vinyl AND on stage. Highlights for me are; definately the rocker "American Made", which also features some heart stopping saxaphone work from the legendary Destroyer saxaphonist Hank Carter. Also, for some classic Destroyer energy cuts, give the slide gem "Sweet Little Lady" and "Devil In Disguise" listens. Also, the title track, which features George on acoustic guitar, Jim Suhler on electric, is a John Lee Hooker song which George and Jim COULD NOT play any better than it is on the CD. God, I love this album so much! If you're a fan of Thorogood, please do yourself a favor and go pick this up! It's in my oppinion the best CD of Thorogood's 26 year career.
Nice to have ya back George!.......2003-05-02
I have been a Thorogood fan since the mid 70s when he used to play the Philly clubs and I was too young to go so I could only listen to the live broadcasts on WMMR. I have followed Thorogood since then and seen him in concert more times than I can count. this album is definitely a pleasant surprise given that after, "Boogie People" his studio albums got progressively worse. "Haircut" was a huge step down, but still okay in spots. The album after that which I can't even remember the title of was so disappointing that my best friend and I actually threw darts at the Cd until it shattered and "Half a boy, Half a Man" while an interesting idea and a decent listen was not up to the standards that I had come to expect from his earlier albums. so, you can imagine my trepidation when I heard that he had a new album out, but my fears were quickly laid to rest from the opening track. George and the boys are back to that raw bluesy rock sound that made them so great in the 70s and 80s. The production on this record is top notch - clear as a bell, but still with enough rawness to let the instruments do the talking. Jim Suhler is an excellent addition to the band. Let's face facts, george is a decent slide player, but his solos do tend to sound the same after a while and Suhler breaks that trend up very nicely with some classic rock licks. Hank carter as usual is a maniac on the sax and Bill and Jeff are still the tightest engine room in the biz. so why did I give this album only four stars? Well, it's mainly because of george's voice. Don't get me wrong, I know this is a rock album and vocal quality never made a rock album worth cranking, but his voice seems to be getting worse with age. There are several spots, (In "American Made" in particular), where he completely misses the note that he is trying to sing and that makes those songs harder to listen to. My favorite songs on this record are "Move It" and "Devil in Disguise" mainly because I like the harmony vocals. In other words, the instrumentation, production and song choices get five stars and George's singing gets three stars making the album an overall four-star record. Either way, it is definitely worth buying and playing over and over again - preferably at top volume. GEORGE IS BACK!
I Love this album.......2003-04-12
All I can say is that I love RIDE 'TIL I DIE. At a time when the music seen is so fake, it is always a breath of fresh air when we can get real music from someone that loves what he does. GT & THE DESTROYERS stick to the basic formula that has made them great all these years. I cant find a single weak track from this album. While I dont agree with reviewers that trashed his last two studio albums, here the band is firing on all cylinders. Of the 12 tracks here, the ones that I find myself hitting repeat on are : GREEDY MAN, AMERICAN MADE, SWEET LITTLE LADY, THE FIXER, THAT'S IT, I QUIT, DON'T LET THE BOSSMAN GET YOU DOWN. Like I said, all the tracks are great and this album will not disappoint the listener. I highly recommend it.

Jack The Ripper.......2007-04-26
How does Motorhead follow up the experimental 4.5 star album 1916 with a even better album "March or Die"
1. Stand starts off the arsenal with a great speed and motovational lyrics, followed by the cover of 2. Cat Scratch Fever which is just great, 3. Bad Religion another classic off this album, 4. Jack The Ripper is probably my favorite track on the cd, 5. I Ain't No Nice Guy with Ozzy is a classic,6. Hellraiser is great to drive around in your car blarring the track with the windows down, 7. Asylum Choir, 8. Too Good To Be True are four star tracks, 9. You Better Run is another classic, 10. Name in vain 4 stars, and finally 11. March or Die is a 4 star track they have made better title tracks than this but still good nonetheless
Motorhead's Best By Far!!!!.......2007-03-02
First of all, I'm not Roland E. Roberts - that's my dad - had to use his name because of age. Now.............
How could you not like this album? First of all, the title track sums up our world - listen to the lyrics - it's us! We lie, cheat, decieve. Lemmy has got it straight in this song! Just look around! Second, the riffs are amazing and the lyrics just seem to fall into place! And third, Ozzy and Slash (two icons of R&R) team up with Lemmy for I Ain't No Nice Guy. The God of Rock has sent me a message - if you have ever heard of Motorhead - GET THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent.......2005-09-22
The greatest metal band in the world with anther stellar cd. Generic Motorhead critics say, but what you expect? These guys have kicked ass for more then 30 years and Lemmy's voice has not faded like Ozzy, Slayer, amung some other metal bands. The songs are hard rock at its finest, and the 1 ballad per album (has happened since the beginning of the 1990s for some reason)is thoughtful and beautiful. One of the best albums by the most underlooked metal band in the world.
Unbelievably brilliant....another top-notch effort !.......2005-02-25
'March or Die' is, simply put, a brilliant album. Motorhead has been so consistant and so friggin' good for so many years now...they may very well be the greatest heavy metal band of all time (settle down, Zeppelin and Sabbath fans, I'm about to explain myself...). What sets Motorhead apart from most metal bands are two qualities: the tight, take-no-prisoners-hellraiser-on-wheels assault of the playing and, most of all, Lemmy's songwriting. Scan the lyric sheet here and see Lemmy take on -- quite brilliantly, I might add -- TV evangelists in 'Bad Religion', politicians who create wars and abuse the environment in the title track, and the power balladeers by writing one called 'I Ain't No Nice Guy', making it an acoustic duet with Ozzy guesting on vocals, and giving it a melody that will stick in your head for days on end. Add a smokin' touch of boogie-woogie piano here and there and guitar-and-bass solos that will rip your tonsils out and make your heart thump, and what you have is one unbeatable band. Anyone who thinks that 'March Or Die' is Motorhead's commercial sell-out album just hasn't been listening close enough. Every band should sell-out like this !! They hold the legacy of the Ramones and Sex Pistols' attack dear to their hearts while staying true to the purest expression of heavy metal form around. We should feel blessed that they are still around making one wonderful album after another, and that we are still able to catch them live. Born to Lose, Live to Win -- indeed !!
KILLS!!!!.......2003-10-29
With the exception of the opener, "Stand", There is not a dull moment in this CD. The favorites of mine are Jack the Ripper, Name in Vain, Too Good to Be True, Hellraiser, Asylum Choir and Bad Religion. I'll start with the absolute favorite one of mine, Name in Vain. This song is very fast-paced with KILLER and I mean KILLER, smack you across the face, heart-stopping guitar work. It's loud, it's mean, it's fast as hell, what more could you want from Motorhead??!! Not fast as in speed metal fast, but fast nonetheless. Lemmy SHOUTS out the lyrics at you so that you bloody well know not to.."take his name in vain!" Inbetween Lemmy's fierce singing, there is some fast, vicious guitar work that only builds and builds as the song goes on and the second solo will blow your mind!!- Too Good To Be true is a love song, but a hard, fast and upbeat Motorhead styled love song where Lemmy does some incredible harmony singing!! I've worn this song out so much in my tape deck it's sick!! Jack the Ripper is a frantic, fast-paced track about Lemmy warning people about Jack the Ripper's legacy. And there's a part in the song where Lemmy slows down the pace and gives some chilling lyrics to creep you out and then build you back up to the quick, frantic pace again. Two slower, yet very dirty, greasy Motorhead tracks on the album are Bad Religion and Hellraiser, for when you feel like slowing it down a bit. They both contain the trademark dirty, graesy heavy bass and lemmy's growling that we've all loved for over 20 years.

Credible Metalcore? What is This, 1999?.......2007-06-30
Sounding like what 'Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child' would have if Stephen O'Mally was twisting the knobs (well, minus a good bit of the breakdowns) or perhaps if Botch came from the swamps of Louisiana, 'I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die' is as dense and noncommercial as metalcore gets. Though they have a bit in common with the rest of the Blackmarket Activities roster (Animosity, Ed Gein, From a Second Story Window) - the heavier, more intelligent riffs, not-too-clean-but-just-right production, and vocals that have a tendency to dabble in the more death realm - Gaza stands quite far above their aforementioned - if not utterly mediocre - peers. Perhaps it is the more sludge oriented sound complimented by the scattered Kurt Ballou-esque progressive parts (see the end of "Hospital Fat Bags"), maybe it's the Hydra Head circa 2001 guitar sound? The idea of keeping the sounds a bit more on the midpaced side, not relying on all out speed every moment to keep things interesting (not at all sure why the term "grindcore" is thrown around so much, this record has absolutely nothing to do with the genre)? It could even be the fact that the vocals are strongly reminiscent of, ex-Norma Jean / current The Chariot frontman, Josh Scogin at his strongest. Whatever the reason, this is one of those records that should appeal to both the record buying masses as well as the jaded metalhead who would like something a tad different. At the very least, it beats the living hell out of recent releases by Job for a Cowboy, Ion Dissonace, and their ilk. A worthy listen.
wow.......2007-05-14
hands down, the best band i've listened to this year. sludge/technical/grind/doom. often a wall of noise that punches you right in the gut from the hellish title track, I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die, to the crushing finish of Hospital Fat Bags, and the piercing emotion that explodes from tracks such as Slutmaker. It's absolutely the best. on top of that the layout of the booklet is looks like one of lucifer's art projects. Brutal band, check 'em out. SEE THEM LIVE.
My plants are dying...my cat is trying to eat my soul .......2007-05-08
A goat on the cover. I'm sold. I'm so easy. But this is not. Gaza is Dis-ease music. A+ for the flippant album title, especially considering they are from Utah. (Which I shall steer clear of, thanks Gaza!) The early eighteenth century term "Diabolus in Musica" (the devil in music) certainly lends credence to the whole abominable atmosphere of this ugly chunk of eeeeevil. Exploding in your ears at the outset in bursts of serrated tritones and detuned disharmony, this is probably the most genuinely frightening album I have heard since Today is The Day released Sadness Will Prevail. Death metal is probably a little too timid of an identifier for this band. I usually joke around with playing death metal or what scream you around my very sensitive and lady-like woman, but I know better with this album.
This music nourishes nightmares. Even the breakdowns sound like the harbingers of Gog and Magog; the two guitarists torturing ill shrieks from callously tapped fingers and twisted chords, the drummer trying to beat his kit into pulp, and the screamer making his point clear, even if most of it is incomprehensible, except for the track "Gristle" a stop start roaring.."Pray it's malignant!" God I hope not! Its all very unnatural and hopeless. The only times of respite away from the the ear clawing screams of anguish, or the monstrously dissonant dual guitar scraping and slashing is when they slow down for a doom crawl, not really bringing the succor. I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die is overwhelming to say the least, and if you haven't been immersed in grind and filth for years, this is probably about as appealing as drinking the oily after-film from the bottom of a bucket of fish guts.
That said, this is for those who find that very thing delicious. The musicianship of all players is refreshing in their quest to find new permutations of bad and worse. The drummer thrashes his kit in constructing and deconstring cascades, off-timing his snares to create a jarring effect that settles in nicely with the rest of the cacaphony. Being that I am a guitarist, it is rather exciting to hear two guitarist make excellent use of a variety of intermediate to expert techniques, especially their multiple fingered chord tapping, and slides of evil and misdirection. As far as the vocalist is concerned, he needs to take a step back and really ask himself, is it that bad? I mean it must be. There is nothing in this record that would give you a conclusion otherwise. his lyrics are funny and disturbing, evoking images of rot and licentiousness in a world with no pity and less light. He also aims a few jabs at emo fans and apparently hardcore too. Not sure what its all about, I am out of the loop, but I am sure the kids kow what's what. The bassist is buried a bit in the mix, but maybe because he's tuned to like Z sharp or something.
I am pretty sure there is some riffage that may have been copped from Mr. Austin, but they tune down so low that the transposition renders said theft unrecognizable. And thats ok, because really, there is nothing new under the sun, and I believe it when Gaza proclaims they don't care where they go when they die.
a musician's perspective.......2007-04-12
this is the heaviest thing since Mare, which is quite an accomplishment. they have the same f'ed up melodic sense that makes it intensely emotional. except they grind it. which is awesome. even more awesome is the fact that they occasionally let the melody slowly impale you. (the end of 'hospital fat bags' for example)
there are also a few lyrics the really stand out for me: 'dumber than a bag of hatebreed fans' is pretty great to hear.
the highlight of the album for me, though, is a very satisfying expression of disgust for our "culture" which climaxes with a VERY ironic "seacrest out." i think it's in 'hell crown.' anyway, it's amazing.
IF YOU ARE DISGUSTED BY THIS CULTURE'S BANALITY, HYPOCRISY, AND COMPLACENCY, BUY THIS RECORD. or just do it because it's genuinely, beautifully, creatively heavy.
CRAZY................................2006-10-07
coming from someone who loves grind and extreme music in all forms,
this is by far the best, most brutal, pissed off emotional release I have heard in a long time (since there ep "east"). the vocals are sick the riffs are insane and the experimental element is unreal. and the songs are long also, esp. for a grind album, they average from 4 mins. to over 6 mins long. overall one of the best extreme metal releases of the year.
