Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason KirkAmazon.com
The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

Pure Garbage.......2007-07-24
No fresh sounds, nothing upbeat and very monotone. I guess when you have a reputation like Beastie Boys you can assume something good is going to be relesed. After 2 clunkers in a row that's no longer the case.
The name of the album should be called "Fill My Bank Account" since all they are doing is taking your money and retiring on it. These boys are a very long way from "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head"...two masterpieces.

After the long wait, Mix doesn't disapoint. This album is filled with great production, great lyrics from Mix and his signature sick, rugged flow. This album is near classic and doesn't really have any weak tracks on it. A definite in any rap collection.

A two-hit wonder that deserved more recognition.

Rump shakin goodness.......2005-05-07
Some of my favorite dance songs when I was in my 20's .......2005-03-18
1. Informer by Snow: Not something I ever remember dancing to at clubs, just remember it being all over the radio at the time and getting tired of hearing it.
2. Ditty by Paperboy: Same as Track 1, thankfully we get past these 2 tunes early and move on to the TRUE dance music.
3. Shoop by Salt n' Pepa: I love this song, however, the mix here is not the version I prefer.
4. More & More by Captain Hollywood Project: A great example of the euro-dance music to come out of Germany during this period. Not only a dance hit, but also went to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. I'm Gonna Get You by Bizarre Inc.: A fun and lively dance tune, and the mix between the previous track & this track is flawless.
6. The Key, The Secret by Urban Cookie Collective: Another lively, bouncy dance tune like Track 5. One of my favorites from my club days.
7. Give it Up by The Goodmen: Another great euro-dance tune that uses whistle blowing and drumline, which was very fashionable in dance music at the time.
8. Talkin About Love by BKS: I don't remember hearing this track "back in the day", but it is a good dance track none-the-less.
9. Supermodel by RuPaul: Gotta love Ru. He has had other good songs since this one, but none have been this fabulous.
10. No Limit by 2 Unlimited: Another sub-genre of dance music during this period, rave. My uptight cousin used to call this kind of music "communist music", but I loved bouncing up & down on the dance floor to this and 2 Unlimited's other hits.
11. Whoomp! There it Is by Tag Team: Ugh...the real dud of this CD.
12. Take me in Your Arms by Li'l Suzy: Another sub-genre, free-style. Free-style was winding down it's popularity and originality by this point, but a good song.
13. Happy by Legacy of Sound: Back to the bouncy, frantic sound heard on tracks 5 & 6. My #1 favorite track on this CD.
14. Forget me Nots by Ava Cherry: I don't remember hearing this remake of Patrice Rushen's classic at the clubs, and although it is good, it does not come near Patrice's excellent version.
15. Show me Love by Robin S: Diva vocals to blow you away. Went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
16. Finally by CeCe Peniston: Another diva who had a string of hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including this one which also went to #5.
17. This is It by Dannii Minogue: Dannii never achieved the stateside success that her sister Kylie has, and this track explains why.
Yes, there are a few duds here and some songs that are just ok, but the awesome dance tracks ("Happy", "More & More", "I'm Gonna Get You", "The Key, The Secret", "Give it Up", "Show me Love", and "Finally") well make it worth buying.
Classics from back in the day!.......2004-05-06
Excellent dance album!.......2004-04-15
"Informer" by Snow is a sadly forgotten classic from the early 1990s and has a New Jack Swing and strong old school hip-hop rhythm and excellent melody, all of which are totally absent in today's rap music! I still enjoy this song a lot. "Ditty" by Paper Boy is a lot more urban and has excellent rhyming and great beats as well. Both of these songs were fun themes back in 1993 when they were popular as I was in a lot of tournaments around this time in my life and these songs hold a lot of memory for me. "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa is a risqué danceable hip-hop classic that was like the forerunner to what TLC would do very shortly afterwards. While not on the raunchy level of "Let's Talk About Sex", this song is indeed on the wild side if you ask me. "More and More" by Captain Hollywood is a dynamite classic. The song begins with electronic sound effects and a haunting ambient intro comes and then the song becomes a highly radiant techo-dance number with some macho rapping too. In a lot of ways, this was like the precursor to Real McCoy's "Another Night" that came in the mid to late 1990s as it has some of the dark undertones of that track. I love this song a lot. "I'm Gonna Get You" is another highly energetic and fun dance song with really excellent keyboards and frantic keyboard rhythm. "The Key The Secret" by Urban Cookie Collective is a somewhat strange dance track with few vocals and fun hip-hop rhythm. I'll continue this review later.
Very interesting, it's a must if you like to party........2000-07-12

Who better to take the traditionally underground art of DJ mix tapes aboveground than Funkmaster Flex, New York City's mainstream hip-hop radio hero? This album is the quintessential hip-hop party album, ripe with ear candy. Talk back to call-and-response tracks from DJ Kool, Frankie Cutlass, and Doug E. Fresh. Remember when with classic hooks from Run DMC, Marley Marl, Special Ed, and the king of all mix-tape loops, Mark the 45 King. Bounce your head to drop-in freestyle raps from hip-hop's biggest East Coast names (Method Man, Erick Sermon, Q-Tip, and Lauryn Hill, among others). If you can stomach Flex's own persistent presence--he self-promotes on Mix Tape, Volume 1 almost as much as he does on his late-night radio show--you will appreciate this shrink-wrapped, extended party jam. --Todd LevinCustomer Reviews:

Before Flex Went Corporate {4 Stars}.......2006-07-26
Anyway, back to the album. In actuality, it's 70 minutes of funk, but who's counting, right? It's a mixtape, so I guess what determines how good the album is are the songs chosen, the cuts and scratches, and the freestyles. All of which are tight on this joint. On top of that, you have interesting collaborations like Sadat X and Akinyele on "Loud Hangover" and the Fat Joe/Big Pun freestyles and Mobb Deep instrumentals.
My only beef with the album is the drop off toward the end. The Kaotic Styles freestyle is boring. Things just aren't as exciting or creative as the beginning or middle of the album, but that kind of thing is kept to a minimum. Outside of that, things move along nice and steady.
If you want a taste of Funkmaster Flex before he went corporate and started dropping the blinged out mixtapes, then check this joint. He's nice behind the wheels and this album is the perfect showcase for his skills. He'd go on to drop a few more in the series, but he'd never top this CD. I recommend grabbing this one while you still can.

Strip away the photo of Barbie as Britney wannabe on the cover and extend the track list with a few hard-rocking, boy-skewed songs, and what you're left with here is yet another installment of the irritating but phenomenally popular Kidz Bop series. Harshly put, Hit Mix is a knockoff. On it you will find an identical-sounding chorus of kids crooning slowed-down versions of top-10ers, the main difference being that the Rhino/Mattel offering is more amenable to listeners whose main objective is finding music they can march their dolls along to in mock fashion shows (or hold make-believe Ken, Barbie, and Midge concerts to, or stage all night boogie-fests for their anatomically incorrect heroes to). Bottom line: If your 4- to 8-year-old gets as much of a rise out of Jessica Simpson as she does her Barbie Townhouse, or if she's a kid who "bopz" shamelessly, her hopes, but probably not yours, have been answered with Hit Mix. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
For what it is, it's not bad.......2005-03-02
There. Now, on to the review. My daughter is 4 and is already all-girl. She digs the "diva" stuff, everything that glitters, furry telephones and all that jazz. I encourage her to branch out to other things, like sports and science, but this is how she is; this is her "groove." So I acquiesce at times, like the day I bought this CD for her. Know what? She loves it.
Not to say that I am nuts about it, because I prefer Harry Connick Jr. and Sting and classic rock, and the local pop radio station is absolutely not on my car pre-sets. But I have heard so much worse. It's lots better than the Kidz Bop CD I bought a long time ago (and conveniently "lost" almost immediately afterward.) But again, I am not the target audience here; my daughter is.
This is a CD that, while it's not exactly my taste, I can bear playing for her enjoyment now and then without wanting to run myself through with the nearest sharp object. At times the back-up little-girl singers are off-key, and there are a couple songs I always fast-forward through, but for what it is, it's really not bad. If your daughter likes this kind of thing, she'll like this CD, and it's easier for adults to bear than the Kidz Bop tracks that I've heard.
Please.......2004-09-20
pleasant mix of pop.......2004-07-17
This CD is very easy to listen to, and while few of the songs will ever become "golden oldies", they are all well produced. As for the lyrics: yes, there are a few more gritty passages, mostly in the "teen angst" songs. Compared to many of the lyrics sung even on public radio, the songs on this album are mild.
I'd recommend purchasing this CD, with the caveat that many people have hightly negative reactions to artists like Britteney and Christine.

With this hugely entertaining Classic Edition collection, Grandmaster Flash (a founding father of hip-hop and turntablism) has fashioned an indispensable release. Evoking big cars, bad suits, disco balls, and intensive hedonism, Flash fuses dancefloor stormers with wistful bits of yesteryear. The mix twists and turns, from Positive Force's "We Got the Funk" to James Brown's "Give It Up or Turn It Loose," before Flash drops "You're the One for Me" by D-Train. Every cut induces severe booty shake or warm and fuzzy nostalgia--or both, best illustrated when Blondie's "Rapture" segues into the marvelous "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" by InDeep. Every half-serious music lover should own some Grandmaster Flash, for no collection is complete without him. --Steffan ChiraziAlbum Description
