5 out of 5 stars Nice to Have a Momento.......2007-03-03

I remember seeing the add in the Washington Post "Jimmy Thackery and the Assasins and Danny Gatton's Funhouse". I thought "Man, this is the place to be this Friday." I was a bit shocked when I walked into the Bayou and found I was the first one there. I bought a brew and parked myself behing the dance floor. The Assasins played to a sparse crowd. Too bad, it was an excellent set. When Gatton and Funhouse took the stage, the crowd was still light.
Man, what a player Gatton was! It is ashamed more people didn't get a chance to see him. He really was awesome. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Great, as always.......2006-02-12

I am a huge Danny Gatton fan and own a great deal of his recorded work. This CD is excellent as is everything I have from this incredible soul, from his CDs to his instructional DVDs. One minor point however; the last track on this CD certainly sounds like "Melancholy Serenade" as opposed to "Harlem Nocturne". Both great, but mislabled on this recording. Recommended highly.

4 out of 5 stars Standunder, or How to make a great record and dissapear........2007-02-27

This Irish five-piece hands us this first -and sadly, last- album, filled with nice, catchy riffs, great, great drumming, solid basswork and a unique voice. here you get a collection of tunes that go from the moody, mellow Wishing Well -my personal favorite-, to the insane L.S.D. to the rocker Standunder to the catchy Been Too Long, and you'll not get dissapointed. Well, except for L.S.D., which could have been a nice outtake.

4 out of 5 stars My Little Funhouse - 'Standunder' (Geffen).......2004-12-04

It's a shame this Irish five piece was never heard from after the release of this disc, their sole album.Whatever the case is,the band was surely capable of writing some strong well-structured basic rock&roll songs with the stellar vocals of frontman Alan Lawlor fully intact.Tracks that I dug the most were "L.S.D.",the moody "Wishing Well",the ass-kicking "I Want Some Of That","I Know What I Need" and their soulful ballad "Anonymous"(would be a nice tune to slow dance to).I remember seeing these guys while they were once touring the states to promote this CD.A forgotten gem.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of an album that never got the recognition it deserved.......2004-08-05

Like many fans of the Irish glam-rock band My Little Funhouse, I was first introduced to them on an episode of MTV's Headbanger's Ball eons ago where they performed an acoustic version of "Wishing Well" from their album Standunder. I was perplexed as to why this band was on Headbanger's Ball, since their music doesn't exactly fit into the Heavy Metal genre. I was even more perplexed as to why they were playing "Wishing Well," one of their mellower songs. But something about this band made an impression on me, for no reason other than their music was GOOD. Shortly afterwards I bought Standunder, went home and played it several times, and became hooked. My Little Funhouse quickly disappeared from the face of the Earth, and unfortunately never had a lot of success. But for those of us who have discovered this gem of an album, their music has lived on with the small yet dedicated fanbase they established during their short career.

Standunder is a glam-rock lover's dream come true, filled with instantly-cathy rock songs that envelop the listener with killer guitar riffs, soaring melodies and pounding drums. The production is first-rate, giving the songs that extra edge to bring them to their full dynamic effect. It's polished, but not overproduced. These guys knew what they were doing. The opening track "I Want Some Of That" is a great rocker and sets the mood for the album. It's easily one of the best tracks. "Destiny" follows, another rocker. "Wishing Well" slows down the pace and starts off with a beautiful acoustic intro until the electric guitars come in. This song is pure perfection. The rest of the album contains more hard rocking songs with the exception of "Raintown," another mellow tune. This song has a great guitar solo that reminds me of Slash's first solo on "November Rain." (they thank Guns N' Roses in the liner notes, so one can assume that GNR were an influence). But my favorite song on the album has to be "You Blew It," a non-listed bonus track sandwiched between tracks 5 and 6. It has one of the best choruses I've ever heard. Simply a killer song.

One thing that makes My Little Funhouse unique is Alan Lawlor's vocals, which can best be described as whiny and child-like. I normally would not like a singer with that type of voice, but Alan's voice works so well for the songs that his vocals end up blending in with the music instead of being irritating. It may take a little getting used to his style of singing but give it a chance and you'll eventually appreciate his uniqueness. The rest of the band is top-notch as well, with brothers Brendan and Anthony Morrissey giving the songs a heavy "crunch" while splashing in great melodies on guitar, Gary Deevy churning out some serious heart-thumping bass, and Derek Maher laying the foundation with some mega-great drumming. This band knew how to work together as a unit, and the songs speak for themselves.

Anyone who is more than a casual fan (or even the casual fan who has been itching for more of My Little Funhouse) should know that there are several excellent b-sides floating around out there. The single of "Wishing Well" has a non-album track called "When She Cries" which is a slower rocker and a gem of a song. There's the Addicted EP which as 2 non-album tracks, "Addicted" and "No More Lies," both very cool. And finally, there's the "Destiny"-"L.S.D." single that contains 3 non-album tracks, "Sip and Spit," "B.T.A.B." and "Pink Pills," all heavy rockers. "Pink Pills" is good enough to make your head spin. One can find all of these at eBay, and if you're a My Little Funhouse fan you owe it to yourself to get them. And if you're new to this band, get Standunder and be ready to discover something spectacular.

    3 out of 5 stars Kilkenny's finest under review.......2003-05-15

~Standunder is a super album from Kilkenny, Ireland's finest band My Little Funhouse. While the album can't hold a candle to their classic gigs supporting Guns and Roses in Slane Castle and in the Pumphouse, Standunder goes some way to capture some of that magic. The album is a solid affair, packed with strong guitar rifts and soaked in a grungy vibe. Alan Lawlor's vocals are terrific with a voice reminiscent of a rockier Adam Duritz. The best track is the funky and downright dirty Cookie Jar~~ while the lamentable L.S.D. is the album's nadir. The tone of the album is very inconsistent and it's hard to tell if they're trying to tap into the grunge phase or make a straight out rocker album but there is plenty to recommend especially for fans of fast and catchy guitar choons. A good outing for Kilkenny's finest. Go on the cats.~

3 out of 5 stars The Cult of Mercy is on a Mission.......2002-11-06

Before you get too upset with me, I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if half-stars were an option.

If you like 80's UK goth, this is your album. The general sound is Sisters/Cult/Mission UK. Mikael Korner's singing is a blend of Andrew Eldritch with Andrew Eldritch. On the plus side, the same song qualities that made those earlier bands so popular are in full effect here.

All the songs have wet rock guitar with lots of reverb, grim vocals and Jonas Elmqvist's hard arena-rock drums. Perfect for the dancefloor, but there's not a lot of variety among the tracks. "Sea of Dreams" is a slowed-down remake of The Mission UK's "Wasteland." At least change the bassline, guys.

These are catchy, well-produced songs with good beats and melodies. The singing strengthens the goth vibe. Still, if you own "Floodland," "God's Own Medicine" and "Sonic Temple," you already own "Oceans of Tears."

5 out of 5 stars Mission UK type guitar rock music with more edge!!.......2002-03-16

The sound of Funhouse evokes memories of the best of the smoky ambience from 80s underground music brought into a modern world. This disc includes a very convincing cover of "Body and Soul" by the Sisters of Mercy and I am sure Funhouse would be great to see live as they capture a lot of emotion and energy on this release. For fans of the Mission UK (think "Deliverance") and the like, this CD is a must have in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Cult meets Heavier Mission, with a Punk Twist.......2002-03-08

Funhouse are a band of Swedish rockers who are always up for a good time--from drinking cherry wine for breakfast to singing songs about the prettiest girls...Their music is psychedelic rock (think Cult "Sanctuary" era) meets Mission (not the lovelorn acoustic, but the heavier Mission hits) meets dark pop. Lovers of both danceable darkwave and good old rock and roll will find this CD the perfect mix of both. Look for them on tour in the states soon.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice stuff.......2004-04-20

A very fine and delicate record, for fans of the harmonies of Brian Wilson. Like Cornelius, Louis Philippe is interested in great sounds and good songs. Philippe is a recluse from France who does love songs in French and English. This record is actually a compilation of several albums done for the Trattoria label. Songs such as "She Means Everything To Me" and "Every Day Gone By" remind me of 10cc, and the fact of Philippe's great influence on Momus. He was just recently in New York, but thanks to someone unnamed I was not able to see him perform, which is a great regret. It's good that people are still making tender and careful records like Louis Philippe, because many talentless buffoons who make a real big noise sometimes get all the attention. A good record for Sundays and late at night.

4 out of 5 stars bittersweet French confection.......2000-01-09

French-born singer Louis Philippe (born Philippe Auclair) made quite a name for himself on the El label, but this CD is the first one to be released domestically in America. *Funhouse* is a compilation of his post-El songs recorded in the 1990s (see *Claret* for a sampling of his earlier work). The album has four separate sections with titles like "Exotic Birds and Drinks." Included are some of his more popular tunes like "L'Hiver Te Va Bien" and "Sunshine." My favorites are the beautiful "Sweet Dollar Bill," "Boy" and "She Means Everything to Me." Philippe mostly sings in English, but regardless of the language, his lilting voice and poignant lyrics come through loud and clear. Fans of Kahimi Karie and April March should definitely check it out.

Recorded over four days with Wayne Kramer of The MC5 producing, Alex Sniderman combines the sonic blast of The Replacements, Richard Hell, and Jonathan Richman with the emotional honesty of American folk music. Sniderman's signature noise is Avant-Roots music for those with no time for phony Alternatives.

In addition to Kramer's legendary guitar work on four of the songs, Sniderman's co-conspirators include bassist/producer Brad Jones (Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw, Ron Sexsmith), bassist Keith Christopher (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Billy Joe Shaver) and drummer Chucki Burke (Issac Hayes, Screamin' Jay Hawkins).

5 out of 5 stars A songwriter, if you will..........2003-03-05

Alex Sniderman is a songwriter, there is no question about that. Alex wears his leather jacket in the fashion that only a [grown up] songwriter can. I am quite confident that he achieves his guitar tone, by a combination of using extra thick acrylic picks, a curly lead (with brass jacks) and an attention to finger vibrato, that would confound most axe men; he is a musician. As I listen to his music I am reminded of Tunisia, not because of any likeness his compositions bear to the country, but it's just that I met somebody called Alex in Tunisia once; he bought me a beer and let me use his sun-tan lotion. If you're looking for a hard hitting rap record, then Mr Sniderman isn't for you, however, if you like your songwriters to be American, male and under the age of 40, then you could do worse than to buy this album, I did, and I wouldn't hesitate to again, if for any reason I mislaid my copy, or it was stolen from my bag whilst travelling on a train or a bus. For fear of resorting to lazy cliches, "I am a fan." You might be too.
