Of course, we couldn't expect time to freeze its relentless path and forever preserve the Welsh sensation Charlotte Church in a chrysalis of precocious youth. And yet, at 15 and now taking bolder steps into expanding her repertory on Enchantment, the soprano remains a marvel of a prodigy. Here, she scours a wider range of sources than on her previous albums. Church moves with breathtaking ease from classic Broadway (West Side Story, Show Boat, South Pacific) to traditional Celtic, film ballads, and even a couple of high-operatic numbers. Church's straightforward approach to the melody of "La Habanera" may not exactly be what Bizet had in mind for his Carmen, but fans will get double pleasure out of the singer's exquisite duet with herself on the haunting "Flower Duet" from Delibes's Lakmé. What's more, there's a greater freedom of expression and sense of how to shape a phrase in many of these tracks--notice how much there is to savor, for instance, in "The Water Is Wide" and "Carrickfergus." It all adds up to a widely varied course, demonstrating the continued growth of a singularly gifted young artist. --Sarah Chin

Bleck!.......2007-05-30
Charlotte has a producing voice, not quite mature, but it's bearable. I don't really appreciate opera unless your name is Sarah Brightman, Hayley Westenra or Holly Stell. Carrickfergus and Somewhere are decent for her voice, but "The Prayer" and "The Water is Wide" is very damaging to my ears due to the fact, her Italian sucks, her range is not wide enough in "Water".
Voice of an Angel!!.......2007-02-05
I enjoy listening to this cd by Charlotte Church! She has such a lovely voice. I especially love listening to Habañera and The Flower Duet as both are sung beautifully by Ms. Church!!
fun cd.......2006-12-29
I love this cd and have had it quite a while. I was just enjoying it again today and thought I'd write a review because I do enjoy it so much. It's just a fun, enjoyable album. Pretty orchestration, a lovely voice, nice to sing along with. Especially at the top of my lungs in the car (alone when no one can hear me!)
I really don't know why one would NOT enjoy this cd.
Good? Yes. Great? No. Over-rated? HECK YES!.......2006-12-15
I bought this CD when I was still in high school, singing soprano I & II in choir. It's not bad but she does much better than even some older kids attempting soprano. I think due to the popularity she gained this poor girl has endured much harsh criticism. True, we can't cut her slack JUST because she is a little girl but on the other hand for someone to sing opera at that age her work IS superb. Whether she's a prodigy or victim of over-ambitious parents & media, she deserves credit where it's due. At least she DID break out as some-what of a mainstream artist & exposed this type of music to those who stereotyped it as fat ladies w/powder-white make-up belting out notes that would shatter glass. Some say the same for Josh Groban who broke into the scene as a mainstream tenor/baritone vocalist. As far as skills & talent, he not the greatest either but many people adore his music. The same credit should go to Charlotte Church.
As far as feedback on the quality...
It's VERY hard to believe the deliverance of her performance. A 15-year-old (even younger on her debut cd) singing songs about love & being able to see the world seems silly. Cracking voice? Yeah, you can really tell she had a difficult time hitting the high note in The Laughing Song because it got all air-y. Honestly, some trained sopranos over-shoot their high notes too & get extremely SHARP so I didn't mind her air-i-ness. I think she did a great job on The Flower Duet though. It still has the same relaxing quality as some other versions I've heard from various movie soundtracks. But compare this to the likes of professionals - real professionals - she's merely tolerable. Try Sarah Brightman if you want to listen to some nice musical sopranos. She even has some pretty remakes of modern songs.
Enchantment Indeed!.......2006-08-20
This CD is simply amazing! However, I am sick and tired of people pressuring her to be someone that she's not! Trying to fit into today's popular music scene, Charlotte has turned to pop, and her career isn't flying well because of it! Her voice is simply amazing for opera, and I will not hear another insulting word about her!
Anyways, the CD is genius! Tonight from "West Side Story" is beautifully sung. Carrickfergus, Habanera, and Bali Ha'i are sung with a hypnotizing beauty. Papa, Can you Hear Me and The Flower Duet are amazing as well!
However, on The Flower Duet, Church's vocals seem strained a bit. The Little Horses is a decent piece, a remake of the standard English folk song. I prefer it straight instead of a varied beat, so that Church's voice could soar on and on.
From my First Moment is a fairly nice song, but The Water is Wide is simply amazing! Her vocals are soaring and mezmerizing!
Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man is NOT the song for her, because she puts a weird accent on the song, like she's trying to sound like a hoodlum! The Laughing Song is something that SHOULD NOT be tried by children, because the vocals are so strained! If I Loved You is a simple yet wonderful piece!
A Bit of Earth and Somewhere are both beautiful pieces, with excellent work from the orchestra.
Overall, this CD is very beautiful! BUY IT!

reviving an old memory.......2007-06-08
This is a recording of an old vinyl which was in my collection. It was good to see that it was available, on CD, just as I remembered it sounding
Thanks.
So BAD she's GOOD .......2007-04-21
This is the most remarkable singing in all of recorded history. So BAD she's GOOD, Florence Foster Jenkins bankrolled herself into mini-stardom selling out her invitation-only once-a-year recitals until she became so legendary, she sold out Carnegie Hall to an audience snickering into their handkerchiefs. These recordings showcase that as BAD as Jenkins is, she gets WORSE . . . brilliantly so! With sensitive and serious accompaniment, Jenkins' voice is like a cross between a clucking chicken and a squeak toy played by Rusty Hinge. Each tune reveals a new vocal weakness (at best) or a deeper absurdity (at very best); these selections are a Punk miracle of self-delusion. I am grateful to all the brave reviewers who gave 5 stars 'cause they're right in its essential laughter factor; if you have a funny bone you cannot NOT laugh while listening to this lady sing!
my ears and belly hurt.......2007-04-11
My ears hurt from this absolutely abominable performance, and my belly from laughing.
A must for all music lovers.......2007-01-05
I first heard this album (LP) about 20 years ago on the radio. I recently recalled it and did a search on Amazon and to my amazement it and other titles were available. I purchased this disc for my wife's Christmas present 2006. We both cannot stop laughing every time we listen to it. I highly recommend this disc to anyone who loves the classics and has a hidden desire/dream that one day they too will be discovered and perform in large concert halls to utter amazement of the audience. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Florence's voice caused my dog to shake in fear........2007-01-02
This woman's voice was so bad that my dog started to shake in fear...then he ran and hid in my parent's room. I gave my friend the cd as a Christmas present and she said it ruined her Christmas. I, on the other hand, have never laughed so hard at someone's lack of musical ability! I've never heard anyone sound so horrible! Now, I don't want to give her all the credit..because when I heard Thomas Burns sing I FELL TO THE GROUND AND LAUGHED UNTIL I CRIED! I guess that's why I am giving it 5 stars. Anything that can make me laugh until I cry is worth its weight in gold!!!

Customer Reviews:
TRUE SHOCK COMEDY.......2006-05-05
this guy is one of the funniest muthafackers ive ever heard. and hes so brutally honest. he has the weirdest point of view of things. many people cant handle this. like he always says "i feel like im leading you guys into battle, you wont all be here in the end" if you dont mind vulgar crazy comedy. then check this guy out. youll love him, i know i did, he can always make me laugh.
Bracing, Vulgar and Unflinchingly Honest.......2006-05-01
Comedian Doug Stanhope is truly an antidote for the inoffensive blandness of many mainstream standup comedians. Hard to believe this is the same guy who hosted "The Man Show" and "Girls Gone Wild." There's no vacuous, fratboy humor here. In fact, one of the edgiest (and funniest) bits is a pro-school shootings rant in which Stanhope confesses his secret high school desire to "kill all the jocks." It is true that Stanhope's raunchy sex jokes are a big part of his appeal, but his consistent stance on behalf of the little guy (and girl) completely separates him from the dimwitted Andrew Dice Clays of the world.
All that said, "Die Laughing" is probably the best of Stanhope's CD recordings (along with "Something to Take the Edge Off"). If you're looking for a place to get acquainted with his extreme verve, this would be the place to start.
Cerebral, Vulgar, and Funny.......2006-03-15
Doug Stanhope puts out a consistently off beat style of comedy. The set featured on this album lives up to the standards of his previous efforts. Doug Stanhope is a different kind of funny, kind of like watching someone beat the hell out of a Mime. His Humor is not as deep as a guy like Dennis Miller, but requires more thought than a guy like Chris Rock. I think anyone who enjoys Lewis Black, Joe Rogan, or any of Doug's previous albums will get a laugh out of this CD. If you're easily offened this CD probably isn't for you, if you have a good sense of humor and can laugh at something because it is a joke, this album is a decent buy.
a new dimension in the comedy of Stanhope.......2003-02-16
Die laughing is the almost complete transformation of Stanhope from a autobiographical comic ("Sicko" is basically just all stories from his life) to one as a social critquer of our society. I personally believe Stanhope is at his best when he's doing an almost even mix of the two, as "A little something to take the edge off" was. This cd leaves the listener feeling angry at the end, which is how Doug probably intended for it to turn out, almost like talk radio does. That is not to say this cd is not funny, Stanhope on his worst day could blow the socks off of any other living comic (maybe even Hicks?) and this cd delivers many of those laugh at loud outrageous off the cuff comments you've come to expect of Stanhope. Just the theme is a little too dark. If you have Stanhope's other cds and are very familiar with him then buy this one immediately. If you are a beginner I would recommend "Something to take the edge off" first, then "Sicko" and then this cd. It's not for people who are just beginning to study the brilliance and art of Stanhope's work. (Believe me, it is truly brilliant and it is art)
Hilarious, brutal comedy by a modern stand-up master........2002-11-14
For those of you haven't heard of him, Doug Stanhope is one of the most talented and outrageous comedians working stand-up today. A gifted storyteller and writer, Stanhope mines his prodigious libido and colorful life as sources for his comedy. Less autobiographical than his earlier "Sicko" (I haven't listened to his other albums), the appropriately titled "Die Laughing" finds Stanhope injecting a dose of brutal nihilism into his raunchy material. I laughed, and I laughed hard, but I certainly wasn't in a happy mood after hearing the material on this album. Stanhope is often compared to the late, great Bill Hicks, and that is in some ways an apt comparison. Both men were enemies of the forces of hypocrisy and reaction, clever satirists of the human condition, and razor-sharp storytellers and comedians. Hicks' comedy, however, though often dark and aggressive, was leavened by his belief in human evolutionary potential. By contrast, Stanhope's material is far darker, for he evinces no faith in anything beyond sex, death, and human stupidity. Hearing this album, I could almost picture Stanhope killing himself on stage as a final punch line. This isn't meant as a criticism of Stanhope's material, since its not for me to sentimentalize the purity of his vision or his role as an artist. . . Anyway, don't let the way-too pretentious blather in this review stop you from buying this album. Stanhope is a comic treasure.

A ndres DVDs get better, an excellent show in wonderful surroundings, I have his latest.
Content Excellent but marred by poor video........2006-04-18
I was dissapointed in this video from the viewpoint of very poor video quality. Barely on a par with VHS. I have a 480P front projector with an 80" diagonal picture and it was unwatchable on that system I had to view it on my 36" tv to have an acceptable picture and even then it was not great. I have several Andre Rieu videos and have never run into that before. According to other reviews Denon has put out a very poor product this time.
The show itself is terrific as Andre always is.
The Flying Dutchman.......2006-04-06
Excellent CD to listen to and relax, to listen while I'm working, and at any time of the day. Andre Rieu is good music!
Wonderful Performance.......2006-03-03
Andre's Flying Dutchman was a delight to watch. Filmed in Limberg, this concert is beautifully pieced together with a lovely array of music. The voices of his beautiful soloists add to the atmosphere of this wonderful concert. Something I would highly recommend.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29
I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!
Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18
This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.
Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19
If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.
A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02
I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.
I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.
Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'
What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.
My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.
This sucks..........2006-03-31
I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?
Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

Must be heard to be believed.......2006-04-09
Even the brilliant Judy Kaye in the recent play "Souvenir" about Ms. Jenkins couldn't quite match the unique sound of this singer, although she came close. For those who like this sort of thing, this is the real thing. The sound on this Naxos CD is superior to RCA's "Glory of the Human Voice??" which covers most of the same territory. The Naxos CD also restores the piano intro to the Bell Song and the heretofore rare Valse Caressante of which only a few pressings are known to exist.
That said, the rest of the (non-Florence) cuts are mostly forgettable. More kitch than camp. Annoying music abounds but the in the realm of the truly, stupendously awful Florence Foster Jenkins remains in a class by herself. No one can really compete with Ms. Jenkins on her own camp grounds and there is no sense in trying. The one exception being the sung "Blue Danube" with Josephine Tumminia and the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra which falls in the "what could they have been thinking?" department.
Personally a little of this sort of thing goes a long way. The Faust Travesty on the RCA set holds a bit more interest (but not all that much). I think a more interesting compliation would consist of "straight" renderings of the various arias and pieces contrasted with Madame Florence's so the listener may fully savor what she achieves in these performances.
Florence gets five stars but the rest of it gets a minus one, so it ends up with four.
This is the definitive FFJ!.......2005-01-09
A fellow reviewer has not paid close attention to the contents of "Murder On The High C's": this release actually contains every recording that FFJ made. She recorded 9 arias and released them on 5 78's (the fifth, "Valse Caressante", was split), all of them gathered here for the first time. What this album omits from the previous cd release ("The Glory??? of the Human Voice") is the arias by an almost equally incompetent baritone. "Murder..." more than compensates for this with the inclusion of some unbelievably tragic recordings by artists who could actually sing but found themselves saddled with shockingly bad material; it's an absolute feast for those who love outsider music. The 'nursery rhyme' songs provoke bewilderment, the swing version of "Blue Danube" must be heard to be believed, and the excellent liner notes accurately describe Lauritz Melchior's valiant performance of "Please Don't Say No" as "the single worst recording of anything ever made by an opera star who should have known better". "Murder On The High C's" is an insanely delirious treasure.
Sounds Like A Vacuum Cleaner Ingesting An Owl.......2004-10-15
Florence Foster Jenkins was a socialite who enjoyed singing in vast disproportion to her musical talent. This CD has some of her greatest works (so to speak) although the disc pales in comparison to her masterwork "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." (In fact several of the songs on this CD are available on that recording.) Particularly ear-shattering are "Musical Snuff Box" (watch out for that last note if you have pets, they will seriously dislike it), "Bell Song" which is essentially a series of a cappella pentatonic scales by and large, and finally the unique rendition of "Valse Caressante" (which was actually released as a single!) which will leave any listener in a near delirium.
In short, these rare Jenkins masterworks are amazing and hilarious. I can't recommend them highly enough to anyone even mildly curious about outsider music. Why the three star rating? It is certainly not due to Florence's participation, rather due to the packaging. The cover boasts "Florence Foster Jenkins and Friends." Little will most people suspect that the "friends" make up about half of the CD, and are totally unrelated to Jenkins except for possessing no musical talent. Some of the songs are merely boring (like the Jimmy Durante selections), and some are quite laughably funny like the dreadful "The Fireman's Bride," and "Please Don't Say No." Finally there is the real puzzler from the "what were they thinking?" file, "Little Jack Horner," an operatic retelling of the classic children's tale. The other reason I only give this disc three stars is because four of the nine Jenkins' songs are available on "The Glory (????) of Human Voice." I had expected different material on this CD.
The bottom line is that this CD is for Florence Foster Jenkins completists. (Ponder that.) People who want more exposure to Florence should buy her delightful "The Glory (????) of Human Voice," which I can't recommend highly enough.
comedy classic.......2004-05-27
In the summer of 2003, I had the luck of hearing Florence's recordings. Even though no one is quite sure whether she meant to be funny or not, listening to her cds always puts me in the best mood. Hearing her try to reach those high notes and missing terribly is the funniest thing in the world!! My family and I love Florence!!!
The "joke", never funny, is now painfully shabby.......2004-03-07
It is sad that a person who apparently had too much money and time to waste could have done so in preserving for an unsuspecting posterity such awful sounds. The so-called friends who flocked by invitation to her concert to relish an event of mockery were at least as much to blame as the poor woman herself for having encouraged such eccentric egocentricity.
The whole matter stinks of making fun of a person afflicted by illness. What a cruel species we were - and still are.

Customer Reviews:
A lot of fun!.......2007-04-25
This is so much fun! It's a shame that this is a "selections only" version rather than the complete work. That said, "Die Fledermaus" is not a great serious work, but a bon-bon. And what a delightful bon-bon!
First, the cast. An interesting combination. Anna Moffo is a delightful Rosalinda; her lush voice works well here. Jeanette Scovotti as Adele may be less well known, but her work is fine indeed (way back when, I owned the Reader's Digest "Operetta" collection, in which these two reversed roles). Rise Stevens, an estimable mezzo, sings Orlofsky with a nice touch. Sergio Franchi plays Alfredo. Eisenstein is well sung by Richard Lewis. George London, a mainstay at the Met, took on Falke. Finally, John Hauxvell sang Frank. And they all seem to be having a grand old time in the singing. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus are well led by Oscar Danon.
Second, the singing. The English translation is hardly great art. But the infectious presentation by the singers renders this close to irrelevant. "Calamity, Catastrophe" has everyone in a dither, with a quick tempo that catches the listener up in the excitement. Rise Stevens does a wonderful turn in "More often than not. . .Chacun a son gout." Well sung indeed. Adele's "Oh for the life of an actress" is an affecting piece, with Jeanette Scovotti doing a nice job singing.
So, if you want an infectious, fun version of "Die Fledermaus" (even with a rather lame English translation), this will work well for you.
Sublime Moffo and cast.......2007-03-04
Terrific recording of highlights from Strauss' "Die Fledermaus", sung in English by Anna Moffo and Sergio Franchi in lead roles with Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Anna Moffo's voice is simply sublime and her magnificent performance demonstrates why she is one of the finest sopranos. First rate cast also includes the wonderful Rise Stevens in fine voice. Sound quality is excellent and stereo. I have only one complaint - why did they not release the full version instead of merely highlights? This disc left me wanting more of this delightful opera.
LOTS OF FUN AND BEAUTIFULLY SUNG.......2006-06-29
The sublime Anna Moffo in radiant voice at her peak surrounded by a first rate cast in an excellent translation -only wish it was complete instead of just excerpts!
Great Moments from Die Fledermaus.......2006-02-10
This is a delightful 1963 recording of highlights from the Johann Strauss operetta "Die Fledermaus", sung in English by major stars of the day, and accompanied by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Anna Moffo sparkles in the role of Rosalinda, showing quite clearly why she was regarded as one of the finest singing actresses of her time. The great mezzo Rise Stevens, at the end of her career here, has a grand time as a throaty Count Orlofsky. Jeanette Scovotti is quite good in the soubrette role of Adele, her light, bright voice contrasting nicely with Moffo's rich, sensuous soprano. The men in the cast are equally good. Richard Lewis, George London and John Hauxvell are all in fine voice and lend a splendid comic flair to the proceedings. The English translations are well done and easy to understand. Uncork a bottle of champagne, sit back and let this recording take you back to Old Vienna!
Sparkling vintage Johann Strauss.......2004-02-20
Oscar Danon is the real star of ths recording. His conducting keeps things light and bubbly, just as it should be.
The English translation is acceptable but nothing dazzling, and some of the words and phrases seem awkward. (Purists will argue FLEDERMAUS is best heard in it's original German. For that, go to Decca's wonderful 1960 set which includes the wonderful gala sequence featuring an all-star cast.)
Anna Moffo is a fine Rosalinda and Jeanette Scovotti is perfect for Adele. (The two ladies switched roles that same year to record highlights for Readers Digest TREASURY OF GREAT OPERETTAS.) Rise Stevens is a bit of a plum as Prince Orlofsky, somehwat past her prime and oversinging "A Most Successful Host." Sergio Franchi does better with Alfred and Richard Lewis does fine as Eisenstein.
The Ball scene is given the larger piece of the recording, probably because this is where the opera's most famous "hit tunes" originate.
FLEDERMAUS is very much a piece of another world...a long forgotten time when Vienna was all glitter and balls and waltzes. They had the right attitude then: In the rest of the world the situation was often serious, but not hopeless. The Vienese viewed the situation as being hopeless - but never serious.
THAT is the spirit of this fun recording.

Customer Reviews:
A shallow & unremarkable voice.......2006-07-12
Echoing an earlier reviewer, one is struck by the fact that Ms. Garrett's voice is an instrument largely lacking in depth & expression. All the notes are in place, more or less, but there is no nuance. She does nothing with music she performs to shape the melody or the lyrics that might imbue it with her own distinct interpretation. While she isn't nearly the joke as some of the "popera" acts which seem to be all the rage these days, Ms. Garrett nonetheless leaves us only with the impression of how remarkably unremarkable she is.
mediocre.......2005-03-09
These performances are mediocre at best. She has clarity and stable technique but her voice as an instrument is a bit shallow. Her expressiveness is also predictable which makes her boring to listen to. The "Art is Calling for me (Prima Donna Song)" was annoying - Kiri te Kanawa does a much funnier version, and of course, more beautiful.
Inspiration.......2001-12-03
As an aspiring singer, this CD is an inspiration. A sensitive interpretation, though she does rush through 'Si mi chamano Mimi' a little bit. Always wonderful to listen to her recordings of repretoir my friends and I are working on.
Garrett's intellegence shines thru in her singing........1999-09-10
Garrett's interpretations are unaffected, clean, and almost always seem 'right'. She sounds like someone I'd like to meet... The last song on this cd, "I Want To Be A Prima Donna", knocked my socks off. (I still find myself smiling every time I listen to it.)
