4 out of 5 stars Wow, what do you say about this album, 25 years later?.......2007-07-09

Styx was my favorite band growing up. I got really into them when Cornerstone was released, and followed up through Kilroy. At the time, I thought Kilroy was an interesting idea, more of a musical than an album, and very, very corny.

Looking back on it now, it's still a very well known album, "Mr. Roboto" is pretty much universally known. So I think they made their point.

3 out of 5 stars Finally, DeYoung's Concept.......2007-07-04

Their eleventh album is the grand concept from DeYoung. This is his album and I think by this time tensions in the band were mounting and the band just went along for their ride, much to their disapproval. Although DeYoung delivers 'Mr Roboto' (secret, secret, I got a secret - today we actually know what the secret was) and 'Don't Let it End', the ballad coming at you full force and pretty much this would spell the end of Styx as everyone knew it. But for this album the magic wasn't there and when the band played live it was a disaster, especially when they played live in Texas with great rockers like Sammy Hager. Fans wanted a rock show and here comes Styx with their unusual concept album and stage act that just didn't get fans excited. In fact, it went the opposite way. Shaw and Young wanted to rock while DeYoung wanted to do the theater on stage. So, Exit Stage Left. This would be their last album as a full band (Shaw went off to form Damn Yankees with Jack Blades and used his stage playing with fellow band mates to publicly ridicule DeYoung on songs like 'Babe' and 'Don't Let it End'- at some point DeYoung and his wife stepped in and asked Shaw not to do this) until 1999 and 'Brave New World' which left little doubt that the rift between DeYoung and Shaw was ever present still. This might not be their best to go out with, but still a must for your Styx collection.

2 out of 5 stars The album that finished Styx..........2007-05-16

I really never liked this album, the last by the "classic" lineup of Styx. This album seriously wounded the band, and the subsequent tour pretty much killed it off. It's really a pity that it came to such a disasterous end. As for the album, the only song that's really good is James Young's sole contribution Heavy Metal Poisoning, a funny, rocking take on right wing religious fundie types irrational hatred of heavy metal music (remember this was the 80's when heavy metal was "killing" our kids...now their target is rap music). Mr. Roboto is really annoying, and Don't Let It End is the worst ballad Styx ever did. This album is pretty much DeYoung's baby, and the tour was as well. They actually acted parts on stage inbetween songs on the tour (which was in arenas, not small venues), and the fans were furious. The rift it caused in the band never healed, even to this day. So unless you're a Styx completist, skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great concept.......2007-05-12

Some great songs on this album, Mr. Roboto, Don't Let It End, Cold War. But also a few that don't make sense out of the context of the rock opera itself. I like it for the feel of listening to it straight through, but it does become a little disjointed when shuffled.

5 out of 5 stars Kilroy Was Here: Ahead of Its Time.......2007-05-04

Kilroy Was Here was a very progressive album in 1983. True it was a departure for Styx, but a very worthy departure. KWH should have been Styx' fifth consecutive triple platinum album. As we all know "Mr. Roboto" and "Don't Let It End" were successful singles by the incomparable Dennis DeYoung. But,there are some other real gems on this album. Tommy Shaw's "Cold War" and "Just Get Me Through This Night" are great (not bad for a Guy who reportedly despised this album and the tour). James Young's "Heavy Metal Poisoning" is quite entertaining and I absolutely love "Doulbe Life," a great rocker with the line: "I'm schizophrenic and so am I." Dennis Deyoung also contributed "High Time" and finshes off the album with a reprise of "Don't Let It End" which is a nostalgic tribute to early Rock n' Roll music. This was Styx' best thematic effort on an album, very cohesive. In my opinion, this was their best album since The Grand Illusion (1977). Definitely a great album that is worth the listen and a must for any Styx collector.

As is true with so many roots-rocking bands based in Austin, Texas, a sweaty club brings out the rambunctious best in Reckless Kelly, giving them a chance to stretch out and let loose on their first live recording. From the pulverizing opener of "Sixgun," which owes as much to AC/DC as the roadhouse, through the new party anthem, "Wiggles & Ritalin," and the reflective, acoustic "Wicked Twisted Road," the band feeds on the call-and-response energy of the hometown crowd and pays it back. The set offers tribute to Lone Star natives Alejandro Escovedo ("Castanets") and the Texas Tornados ("Guacamole"), as well as farther-flung inspirations such as Richard Thompson ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning") and the Beatles (a bluesy "Revolution"). "Baby's Gone Blues" begins as a riff-rocking piledriver and ends as a fiddle-driven breakdown, an encapsulation of the musical progression embodied within the band. On twangier fare such as "Nobody's Girl," frontman Willy Braun could pass as a vocal ringer for Steve Earle. --Don McLeese

What a great selection of songs from the boys from Idaho.1952 Vincent Black Lightning is incredible. To read the whole story about the origins of the song just search it on google. This CD captures the incredible energy of a Reckless live show.Keep up the good work guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Reckless Kelly was here.......2007-01-08

Got a lot of music for the money, but the recording itself was not real sharp. Haven't looked at the dvd yet, hope that's not the same.

5 out of 5 stars energy. captured........2006-12-15

They have captured the energy of their live shows. If you still don't get it, there's a dvd included.

5 out of 5 stars A Steal Of A Deal.......2006-12-09

Reckless Kelly Was Here is a great live album. If you're new to the band, it serves as a great introduction, giving you all of their biggest songs. You also get a look at one of their high energy live shows. For those who are already fans, this is also a must own. You get two new songs, plus the previously unreleased cover of 1952 Vincent, which is worth the price alone. The real draw, however, is the live DVD. It's a great performance by a great band. As mentioned by other reviewers, the vocals could have been louder on the recording, but its not a major issue.

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' live album.......2006-08-31

Like the other reviewers, I LOVE Reckless Kelly and cherish my copy of their original live album, "Live at Stubbs". The vocals on Reckless Kelly Was Here aren't quite as strong as some of their others, but if you're looking to recreate some of their rockin' live show energy in your living room, you can't go wrong with this CD set.

Hip-hop's hottest housewife may not have 'em lining up around the block they way they did for "Milkshake," but Kelis Was Here, her fourth disc, doesn't lack for suggestive mouthfuls. "Blindfold Me" trades in unapologetic but catchy raunch, and "What's That Right There," produced by will.i.am, is a cool size-up of her sex life--"You likes it raw, I likes it on top/I got something for that lollipop," she teases. There's more to Kelis than dirty lyrics and a pretty face, though, and she proves that here deftly, first single "Bossy" being the best example. While her fellow R&B divas fall all over themselves to churn out the latest addition to the my-man-done-wronged-me canon, Kelis keeps her vulnerable side--if she has one--under wraps. "Bossy" salutes her inner dominatrix, and "Handful" and "I Don't Think So" send out high-fives to sauciness--a general don't-take-no-mess spirit. What may be most distinctive about Kelis Was Here, though, is its range: dipping, bobbing, and weaving from '80s pop to funk to hip-hop to smoky ballads, Kelis shows one-trick musical ponies how it's done with characteristic, cuss-heavy swagger. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Kelis Was Here - 4.5 stars.......2007-06-22

Listening to this disc makes me sad that Kelis isn't embraced more fully by the US but I guess as a fan, knowing that she is appreciated overseas for being a dynamic risk taker, has to be enough! This is another excellent offering by an artist who knows exactly who she is both as a woman and a vocalist - Kelis never veers from "her lane" yet manages to produce uniquely cohesive albums.

Releasing BOSSY as the lead single was pure genius! I loved it from the jump but it was so great watching friends who initially hated the track fall under the spell of the song last summer.

WHAT'S THAT RIGHT THERE - a catchy track using Parliment's KNEE DEEP sample while Kelis partly raps & partly sings. Listening to it though, I wonder if it would've been a big hit if either Fergie or Gwen Stafanie was the artist behind the song....

TILL THE WHEELS FALL OFF - another fave, reminds me of something Prince would've produced in his heydey

LIVING PROOF - melodic track on which Kelis' smoky vocals sound great

BLINDFOLD ME - although this track has a great beat (along with a HOT video by the newlyweds) I thought it was a really risky choice as the 2nd single and killed the momentum built up by BOSSY

GOODBYES - I love the beats on this track and as I listened to it over & over, something about it reminds me of something Lenny Kravitz would sing (now wouldn't that be a great duet!?!)

APPRECIATE ME - a very dramatic anthemic song that builds and again features Kelis' trademark throaty vocals

HAVE A NICE DAY - this track turns into a really fun listen once you get to the "carnivale" breakdown

TRILOGY, WEEKEND & CIRCUS - all feature great catchy beats but the strong lyrics of CIRCUS presenting a commentary about today's music industry make it another fave

My favorite track 2nd to BOSSY is the gorgeous LIL STAR - why oh why wasn't this released as the 2nd single??? I think it would've been a hit and it definitely would've piqued the interest of those who only think of Kelis in passing (it's truly a hidden gem much like MILLIONAIRE was on her TASTY album).

I'm so glad that in the face of what the music industry has become, Kelis continues to "go left" and do her own thing while still putting out excellent music. I was surprised that the Neptunes didn't work on even one track but this did not lead to a drop off in the quality of the music. Fans won't be disappointed and neither will those who are just discovering Kelis - this ecclectic collection will keep music lovers smiling for days.

5 out of 5 stars LUV IT!!!.......2007-04-10

I bought this CD after I heard it in a friend's car. It took about a week for me to actually change the CD because I absolutely COULD NOT stop listening to it. This is my first CD purchase from Kelis, and I am far from disappointed. I even had my cousin listen to it, and she hated it. That chick is so picky with the music she listens to. BUT, she's absolutely crazy to not love this one. I actually need to go back and buy another one, because I'm sure the one I have now is about to start skipping soon! LOL

She gets you hooked from the very first song you hear on the album. I love her intro!!! I have many favorites on the album: Blindfold Me, Appreciate Me, Bossy, What's That Right There (HOT AS HELL!!!), Till the Wheels Fall Off (MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SONG OF THE WHOLE ALBUM. I'll play it at least 2 or 3 times before I listen to the rest of the album!), Trilogy, and definitely Awe Sh**! Mess around with me, I'll name the entire album. LOL

I definitely underestimated her! She is a true hidden talent, very unique, and her voice is great!!! I can't wait for the next one. When I buy another copy of this, I'm going to pick up her other albums as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing album. Very ecclectic and funky. .......2007-02-12

THIS IS THE FIRST KELIS ALBUM I HAVE PURCHASED, AND THIS IS ONLY BECAUSE I WATCHED THE LISTENING PARTY FOR HER ALBUM ON VH1 SOUL. EVERY SONG IS FIRE AND I TOLD MYSELF I WOULD HAVE TO BE CRAZY NOT TO COMP THIS ALBUM. I SOOO LOVE THIS ALBUM. EVERY TRACK HAS A BEAT THAT IS 'TO THE LEFT'. IT IS SOO DIFFERENT FROM ANY ALBUM OUT THERE AND THE PRODUCTION IS SLAMMING. ONLY A CREATIVE PERSON CAN MAKE AN ALBUM LIKE THIS AND HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO PUT IT OUT THERE. I HAVE A LOT OF FAVORITES ON THIS ALBUM. SOME ARE BLINDFOLD ME, CIRCUS, WEEKEND, APPRECIATE ME, AND OTHERS. THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW ALBUMS I OWN THAT I CAN LISTEN TO EVERY TRACK. I AM ALSO VERY APPRECIATIVE THAT SHE GAVE US MORE THAN 12 TRACKS WHICH WAS VERY GRACIOUS OF HER. WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS ALBUM, THE VERY THING THAT CAME TO MIND WAS, SHE DESERVES A GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR BEST RNB ALBUM, BECAUSE THE GRAMMIES LOVES THE NON CONFORMING TYPE OF MUSIC, SO NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN SHE WAS ACTUALLY NOMINATED FOR BEST CONTEMPORARY RNB ALBUM AND TRUTH IS, I HOPE SHE WINS. ALL I CAN SAY IS, YOU GO KELIS!. I AM SOOO HAPPY SHE IS IN THIS INDUSRTRY TO SHOW YOU CAN TRUE TO YOURSELF AND MAKE A HOT ALBUM. THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE. I BECAME A FAN WITH THIS ALBUM AND I LOOK FORWARD TO GOING BACK AND GETTING THE OTHER ALBUMS SHE'S RECORDED. YOU WILL NOT REGRET BUYING THIS ALBUM.

if your girlfriend forces you to buy ONE r&b cd this year, get her kelis's new album... for the hip hop lover, this is easily the most standable music that she plays that I can listen to without going out of my mind...
some nice beats, experimental melodies and some nice sexual images...

peace,

funky type of songs that are cute and get stuck in your head. She cannot really sing and some of the songs are not that good. Yet the songs she puts on the radio are cute songs that are fun to dance to and are just anthems nothing more than just that.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

A 1975 live album that found Clapton at--if you'll pardon the expression--a crossroads, E.C. Was Here marks the line of demarcation between the guitar hero of the past and more song-oriented player he'd become for the second half of the '70s. Clapton breaks out on a couple of old Blind Faith numbers--"Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home"--that reflect his soulful, spiritual side, while "Further On Up the Road" rocks out and Charles Brown's "Drifting Blues," restored to its full eleven-and-a-half-minute length on the CD's newly remastered version, presents another instrumental showcase. There are only six tunes here, but E.C. leaves his indelible mark on each of them. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Tell Them E.C. Was Here" and he left you the CD!.......2007-06-20

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

For as long as there have been record companies they have taken constant criticism (Well deserved) for being short sided, out of touch with the artists audience, and only caring about the might dollar. When August 1975 saw the release of "E.C. Was Here" the accolades belong not only to Mr. Clapton but the suits for understanding in advance this wasn't going to be about hit singles and three minute songs.

"E.C. Was Here" contains six tracks. Only one was penned by Clapton the Blind Faith masterpiece ("Presence Of The Lord"). He would deliver another Blind Faith treasure "Can't Find My Way Home" (Steve Winwood).

The opening track "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" is written by Billy Myles. Clapton's not the only one singing the blues. His guitar sounds as sincere as E.C. with a terrific rendition.

Next comes "Presence Of The Lord." During the 6:40 things get very still. You became fixated on the pure emotion from Clapton. He was attempting to put the drug demons behind and with Yvonne Elliman's incredible voice along side, this is as good as any post Blind Faith version. Your ear can hear after "Everybody knows the score" E.C. mutters "yeah." Don't think the vocal arrangement dampers the guitar. Clapton's six string sounds like a blowtorch.

Track three is the longest one on the disc. It is the Brown, Moore, and Williams composition "Driftin' Blues. Clapton's wizardry leads the band through an exhausting and uplifting 11:43.

Up next is Eric's tremendous rendition of "Can't Find My Way Home." Once again, Yvonne Elliman's powerhouse and vocal diversification enhances an instant classic.

One of Clapton's idols Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind" follows the Blind Faith genius. It is one thing to pay homage to your heroes but harder to excel in the process. Clapton plays the blues as if there would be no tomorrow. The guitar's tone perfect for the stroll back in time.

Joe Medwick and Don Robey's tune "Further On Up The Road" has been played a million times. When Clapton puts this in the set list (He has many times over the years) it brings a certain distinction. Jamie Oldaker's drums sound wonderful in conjunction with the guitar.

Throughout the festivities the CD mix of the other players Carl Radle (Bass), George Terry (Guitar), Marcy Levy (Vocals), and Dick Sims (Keyboards) is well done.

Tell them "E.C. was here."

Enjoy the music and be well,

5 out of 5 stars his best effort.......2006-04-21

it seemed the more raggedy and doped out clapton was the more inspirational his playing was. i saw this tour from 1974 and some of his playing was from another world, some of his licks and runs on this album are just sick, play it and see why for a period of 5 years from 1969 to 1974 he was the best in the world

5 out of 5 stars EC was Blues Rock god .......2006-04-10

The backup band is so lousy. On 'Rambling' you can hear EC speaking out the chord (C sharp, E, funny). But wait, the guitar is simply the best blues rock I've ever heard.

In HYELAW, each singing line is completed by a poignant guitar phrase that complete and dig deepeer in the emotion.
The Presence of the Lord chorus shows what heavy guitar can be when it goes beyond the cliches. It's at par with the best Led Zeppelin.
All acoustic work is better than anything in Unplugged.
Rambling is a meditation, the same kind he would do years after in Old Love. Close your eyes and take the trip with him.
Further On Up The Road is a classy boogie, showing EC amazing sens of timing and crescendo.

I truely respect all EC work. But I wish he build on this kind of inspiration rather than go puppy like he did next in his career.

4 out of 5 stars Here, There and Everywhere.......2005-11-19

EC's done a bit of touring over the years, you know? Paid his dues. Back when these tunes were recorded, many of his fans were uncertain how much longer Eric would be around, worried as they were about rumors of drug and alcohol abuse typical of rock star excess. But ol' EC wasn't finished just yet and as the intervening years have shown, he's still alive and kicking.

It might be easy for some to look at the song list and discount this set of live performances - where are the hits? Well, you won't find "Layla" or "Crossroads" but all six of these songs are excellent and perhaps more importantly, they fit into a coherent whole. "Have you Ever Loved A Woman" has never been on my EC favorites list but each time I listen to it, I get pulled down into the fabric and catch the groove. Likewise, the two Blind Faith tunes included here ("Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home") might seem a little out of place since they take up so much of this disc, but in fact, they prove to be excellent choices.

But if you only need one excuse to pick this disc up, it can be found in "Drifting Blues" which weaves a seven minute path through a moody blues before melding into a rambling finish. Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind" is included here and is given a kind of patient approach that can give incredible power to the blues. This is an excellent performance and after signaling the band to F sharp, EC unleashes a signature solo. The disc closes out with a rowdy rendition of "Further On Up the Road" that is fit for a king. Not bad for a disc that was more often than not panned by professional reviewers when it was released in '75.

4 out of 5 stars E C Was Here.......2005-07-16

I was never a big fan of Claptons through the years.I liked Cream and Dominos and Blind Faith but never really Claptons solo stuff.I heard all the songs that were played on the radio and that was about it.Well I listened to this album and I became a fan.I read a review before that said this was boring well that is wrong. This album I think I can honestly say this is why Eric Clapton is a guitar god.Great blues and great songs and great guitar. That makes it all worth listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

This gem from 1991 shows Del tha Funkee Homosapien--the charismatic MC from respected Bay Area crew the Hieroglyphics--in a sharply promising debut, produced by Del, his cousin Ice Cube, and DJ Pooh. Unlike his famous cousin, Del has made a lyrical name for himself by not rhyming about the more violent aspects of inner-city life, instead taking a more laidback and humorous tack, though each rapper produces a stinging effectiveness in his lyrics. But even Cube has to make fun of himself, posing as a guest thug on a parody, "The Wacky World of Rapid Transit." The pair's penchant for creative, hard-hitting beats are certainly in alignment, as P-Funk gets referenced throughout, both in the album's title ("Brother George" = George Clinton) and in the raw grooves that snake in and out of the album. But above all, this is a prime chance to catch Del's mighty tongue unleashed in his most brazenly un-PC (and extremely fun) ode to black pride--check out "Pissin' on the Steps" or "Dark Skin Girls" for further evidence. --Tamara Palmer

4 out of 5 stars I WISH MY COUSIN's were as funky as GEORGE!!.......2007-03-28

Some mc's you just know from the second that you hear them are going to become one of your favourites if they hopefully get the backing they deserve. Del was one of those that I instantly loved listening to. Throughout his debut the funk laced tracks perfectly inable him to showcase his amazing wordplay and witty sense of humour. Although his style is very much darker+sharper nowadays this is the perfect 1st glimpse at the fun side of Del. With help from his cousin, the legendary Ice Cube on the production side of things with his Boogiemen crew (Bobcat and Dj Pooh) the album is very funky with lovely Funkadelic/Parliment samples over hard head nodding beats. Del's playful lyricism is all over the tracks and his stories are both funny and insightful. He deals with issues in his community in a more funnier way than his cousin would do and puts a lovely twist on them such as tracks like "Wacky World Of Rapid Transit" (the state of the public transport), "Pissin' On Your Steps" (white cats in the hiphop industry, particularly Vanilla Ice), "Dark Skin Girls" (his preference in girls), "Sleepin' On My Couch" (story about friends taking liberties when he extends kindness), "Hoodz Come In Dozens" (about thugs being in every hood). The main standouts were the singles "Mistadobalina" (still amazing to this day) and "Dr. Bombay" aswell as "Wacky World Of Rapid Transit", "Ahonetwo, Ahonetwo", "Sunny Meadowz", "Sleepin' On My Couch", "Hoodz Come In Dozens" and "Same Ol' Thing". Excellent debut that is GUARANTEED to entertain.

5 out of 5 stars Even today it still has such an impact on me........2006-10-11

If you had to own at least one of his records this would have to be the one. While NO NEED FOR ALARM was my personal favorite, I will admit that overall this was better. Lyrical wise & Beat-wise he has never put out anything better. One of the best MC's from the Heiro-crew and one of my favorite MC's from the west coast in general. This LP will take you back to your B-Boy & B-Girl days and/or just help you remember again why it was you loved HIP HOP so much. Peace

4 out of 5 stars (9 out of 10) Del's Major Label Debut .......2006-08-18

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien hit the West Coast scene back in 1991, with his debut album I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Now to me, the whole concept behind this album came from left field, when I first heard this album. Probably because I've listened to all Del albums before this one, and on those albums he talks about dissing wack emcees and video games. On this album, he go the route, sort of like his cousin O'Shea Jackson (aka Ice Cube) went back in that time. Here his subject matter expanded to more other topics, like riding the bus on the song "The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit", and living in the hoods in the songs "Hoodz Come In Dozenz" and "Sleeping On My Couch". He would also show a taste of a preferance of dark skinned females over light skinned ones in the song "Dark Skinned Girls".

As for Ice Cube, his production (along with DJ Pooh) would play a standout part in this album. Like I said before, I heard all other Del albums before this one and they were mostly produced by members of the Hieroglyphics. When Cube brought some of his P-Funk into Del's album, I thought it didn't mix at first. But giving it a few more listens, it actually has a nice sounding fell to it. The songs "Mistadobalina" and "Doctor Bombay" (lead singles?) are part of the songs that would mix with the P-Funk style. Also Cube would play sort of a humorous paroody in the album, shouting out adlibs on some songs, like on "The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit" he says his car is in the shop and asks Del for a bus transfer. Or in the song "Dark Skinned Girls", Del says they're better than light skinned, and Cube shouts "I disagree with you homeboy!" telling Del to pick up a light skinned girl.

So overall this debut for Del was pretty nice. Del's rhymes mixed with some P-Funk would make this album more unique than any other album that he as recorded. If you're a fan of Del or love Ice Cube's production, I recommend this album to you. This would be the only album that he worked with Cube, before he would expand into more of the Hieroglyphics type albums. Argubuly his best album behind the more recent Deltron 3030.

4 out of 5 stars "I forgot my favorite man sittin' over there...".......2006-03-28

Del tha Funkee Homosapien was doing underground hip hop before underground hip hop even existed. While Del is from the west coast, don't confuse his sound with other west coast hip hop. There are two things that separate him. First, while it's true that Del's cousin Ice Cube and DJ Pooh produced most of this album, Del was also in the control room influencing the sound of the album. Second, he didn't grow up in the So.Cal. hoods. He grew up in the Bay area, which I think was a major influence on his sound. This album bounces with fantastic beats, that have a little bit of P-Funk, combined with some extremely funky drum tracks. Two of the standout tracks, in my mind, are Mistadobalina and Pissin' on Your Steps. The former is known for being the first single off this album, and was responsible for putting Del's name in the names of hip hop heads. The latter is a fun little track that takes a couple of shots at the dancer/rappers of the early 90s. It includes the following line: "Ice is cool/But I can't stand Vanilla/ because he takes a style and tries to mock it/ Ain't nothin' personal G/ but I'm kinda into chocolate." All of the tracks have their own little moments, and this album is a hip hop classic. With this kind of talent, it's no wonder that Del is still out there doing his thing.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-08-12

It was a little off with those women in the background but this dude is definantly very Funky and he has a smooth flow and great lyrics. It is increddible that Ice Cubes cuz sounds so different then him. But there are some of Del's biggest hits here and he also has a good rap CD now with the Gorillaz as he finally gets some Mainstream recognition you would have thought he would recieve."Mistadobolina"-"Mr.Bombay" and the song about his couch are the best here. "You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.
