5 out of 5 stars Classic Debut.......2007-07-16

4 1/2 stars.

It's not to say that Slayer didn't have a unique sound, but for points of reference I would say that this sounds like a cross between Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" and Venom's "Welcome to Hell". Like the former, the album is extremely catchy without sounding the least bit commercial. I'd say this was due to the fact that they were clearly influenced by NWOBHM which often has that same attribute. The album is also quite dark like "Welcome to Hell" but it is less tongue-in-cheek and they avoid the silly (not an insult) "fun" songs that Venom likes to throw in every once in a while. Both the guitarwork and drumming are amazing. Although technically challenging to a good degree, they make sure to focus more on quality songwriting than showing off. Also, the vocals are among the best among Slayer albums. They're less angry than later on and a bit raspier. Even if he's not technically a "good" singer by the traditional standards that your high school music teacher followed, the vocals are very fitting particularly because of the obvious Venom influence, plus he does the style well. The album is not the band's lyrical peak, but the lyrics are decent. They don't come off as honest or as brutal as on albums like "South of Heaven" and "Christ Illusion", but at the same time they don't totally wallow in the pseudo-Satanic cheese that was so popular at the time. Okay, maybe there's just a hint of that. The lyrics also occasionally deviate from the norm (how many bands have written about crionics?). Anyways, I would say this is one of the best debut albums of the 1980's thrash scene. It's not as brutal as "Reign in Blood" nor as complex as "Hell Awaits" and the sound is slightly dated, but it has it's place and I can't imagine a serious metal freak not greatly enjoying this album.

Also, there is no metal band that could be called more definitive in regards to underground metal. If you have a friend interested in learning about true, influential metal, this is the band to point them to although they should start with "Reign in Blood".

My Slayer album ranking:
Reign in Blood ***** (1)
South of Heaven *****
Hell Awaits ****1/2
Show No Mercy ****1/2
Live - Decade of Aggression ****1/2
Seasons in the Abyss ****1/2
Christ Illusion ****
Haunting the Chapel **** (2)
God Hates Us All ***1/2 (3)
Divine Intervention ***1/2 (4)
Undisputed Attitude ***1/2
Diabolus in Musica ***

(1) My all-time favorite metal album.
(2) I know it's blasphemy to rank "Christ Illusion" higher than "Haunting the Chapel" but I only do so because of the length. I've never understood EP's.
(3) It has poor lyrics and I liked "Bloodline" better when it was called "Gemini", but it's still underrated.
(4) I used to hate it, but it grew on me.

4 out of 5 stars The One that Started it All.......2007-04-03

I originally got this through Columbia House in August 1996 after I had become a fan through the purchases of Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss. Whereas Venom's Welcome To Hell was a poorly-recorded debut full of metallers who could not play to save their lives, Slayer's Show No Mercy is a poorly recorded debut of metallers who could play. That doesn't change the fact that this album is not one of the great debuts of metal but like Venom's debut it is an album that does carry some merit and enjoyment. Not the essential first purchase but not a waste of time or money either.

5 out of 5 stars Slayer's debut album.......2006-07-23

In 1981, a band out of Southern California known as "Dragonslayer" was formed by singer/bassist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King. A drummer, Dave Lombardo, was quickly found, and Jeff Hanneman was brought in as a second guitarist later into 1981. Most of their music at this time was influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that was sweeping through the world during the early 1980s, but after attending a Metallica concert in 1982, they were hell bent on playing harder and faster than said band and shortened their name to Slayer. By 1983, they were already signed to Metal Blade Records and released their debut album, Show No Mercy. How did it turn out? Read on for my review.

Well, this album is very different than all of the Slayer albums that succeeded it, because Slayer was still in transition between their NWOBHM roots and the extreme thrash powerhouse they would eventually become. Many of the tempos are modest compared to their later releases and Tom Araya shows off a very wide vocal style (all the way from low-pitch growls to Halford-like schreeches). However, look away from some of the things the band were still growing out of during this timeframe, and you'll find one of Slayer's best releases.

Many of the songs on this album remain classic live staples to this day (Antichrist, Die by the Sword, Black Magic), while others sound like they came straight from a Judas Priest record (Cryonics, Tormentor). I love all the variety on this album, from the progressive monster that is Metal Storm/Face The Slayer (my fave off the album) to the adrenaline-fueled tital track.

Overall, if you are a NWOBHM fan and a thrash metal fan, or a Slayer fan looking to round out your collection, you need to buy this album! It's still one of their best albums!

I've been searching for this item everywhere!! I found it on Amazon.com and I was delighted to see it. This album is Slayers first, and it is one of the best!! If you like fast riffs, killer solos and just pure insanity, then you should definitely pick up your own copy today!!!

1 out of 5 stars If I could give it a lower rating than 1 star, I would........2006-04-27

I started up the samples for each of the tracks on this CD with an open mind. But found myself woefully disappointed at each and every playing of them. They were all horrendous.

I hope Blackie enjoys the money he got from the licenses to the tracks on the songs of this CD. Because there certainly is nothing else for anyone to enjoy about it.

5 out of 5 stars Show no mercy.......2002-03-07

This cd is bad ... The best covers in my opinion would have to be "the torture never stops" and "tormentor". great cd. awesome bands. bad... covers. All these bands, in my eyes, bring these classic songs to justice. Krueger's take on "arena of pleasure" im sure will probaly be the most hated, but this is one of my favs also. All these songs are great. definately buy this if you like wasp and like death metal. Good mix i think.

2 out of 5 stars W.A.S.P. songs ot meant for death sound.......2001-07-11

When I first heard this album was being released I was very excited. Needless to say when I purchased it I was a little disappointed. It was very cool to have in my hand a tribute to my favorite band but when I spun it I found that most of the songs were bare discernable as the W.A.S.P. tunes I knew and loved. There were a couple of descent track that I thought made it worth owning the disc. Black Earths rendition of "Wild Child" is a very good cover, along with Mystifier's version of "The Torture Never Stops". But as far as the rest of the disc goes, if you are a W.A.S.P. fan and you like the "Death Metal", "Cookie Monster" type vocals, you will love this album. But if you are more like I am and stick to the traditional "mild growl" vocal like Blackie Lawless you probably wont. Either way it is a CD worth having a place in you W.A.S.P. collection.

      3 out of 5 stars Decent Debut.......2007-03-10

Bride delivered this opus in 1986 on the long since defunct Pure Metal record label. Now 20+ years later it's availible again and for the first time on cd! The stand out tracks are "Evil That Men Do" "Forever In Darkness" & "Thunder In The City" the rest is pretty forgetable but these 3 are worth the price of this disc alone! I mostly recommend this to die hard Bride fans as overall it's pretty boring but an awesome addition to your Bride collection.

4 out of 5 stars the nostalgia gene kicks in.......2007-02-20

before BRIDE became BRIDE, they were known as MATRIX and they released a few demos on the 80's metal/hard rock club circuit. i got turned onto BRIDE through a buddy of mine who lived in my neighborhood when i was 13 years old. as a budding metal head into Crue, Ratt, Cinderella, i liked what i heard. then my friend let me copy his original tapes of MATRIX demos. these were far different than the band that they would grow to be.

While BRIDE embraced an epic, thrashy metal realm full of gothic images, dragon slayings, and other DIO-isms; Matrix was a much more stripped down affair. their songs built on hard rock riffs and a knack for some new wave styled pop melodies. in fact, you might think of Matrix as a more rockin' version of The Cars. another point of reference would be the awesome, although obscure group, The Jesters Of Destiny.

these songs really seemed to capture my attention when i was a kid and i recall playing thenm endlessly. well, i was absolutely chuffed to find that these were released on cd and i ordered mine and have been listening to it with much joy. i'm not exactly sure that these would be so great to me if i had not heard these when i was younger. because, even though i like these songs alot, they are certainly on the cheesy side of things. but any lover of good music can't help but notice that there are tons of great songwriting that is beginning to take form in these early recordings. fans of heavy metal might not find much to rock out to, but those interested in discovering unknown new wave/hard rock artifacts from the past might find quite a bit of interest in cd1 of this release. for me, it's been great revisiting these songs after many years.

          5 out of 5 stars 40 of Bride's greatest songs.......2006-02-09

For fans of Bride, this is a must have. Both CD's together have 40 songs from the early days of Matrix through the Bride songs of the Lost Reels. Several of the songs did make it on to later Bride releases. All of Bride's music rocks, but this is so unique because it covers all of the early years of Bride dating clear back to 1982. The music is full of power and energy. What a deal for 40 recordings!
