4 out of 5 stars Part of the great TC trilogy..........2006-08-27

I have this one on right now. Let's Set the Record Straight may not be as strong as Forbidden Zone, but it is definitely on par with From the Street. There is strong playing and writing from TC as well as inspired performances from the late-great Bob Berg, Frank Gambale, a few surprises from percussion-whiz Sheila E., and the relentlessly uncompromising drum-set assault of Dennis Chambers. On a more practical level...where do you have to go to hear this stuff live? Why doesn't it get any airplay? Are the people really so dim that rap, grunge, and faux-punk are all that they can handle? It's sad.

Oh my god that was awful. It's worse than awful, it's pathetic. These guys come across about as sincere as used car salesmen, and have all the talent of a backstreet boy.

1 out of 5 stars bad rhymes, bad attitude.......2002-06-24

on an artistic note, poor 'flows' from idx (not to mention debbie mathers) and production at its daftest. you've heard this kind of beats plenty of times (& hoped you would never have to again). only get this record as a pop culture curiosity.

what's annoying about this record is idx's attitude rather than ms. mather's urge to keep the feud with her son as public as possible (everybody, i guess, has made a sense of their own of the em/debbie story). whether you think it's a moving statement, or refuse to buy her story, it would seem far-fetched that 3rd rate rappers like idx did this stuff out of moral considerations-- clearly just a cheap (actually pretty cheap) attempt to drop in on em's wave

3 out of 5 stars Appropriate Response.......2001-10-17

Although Eminem isn't serious on his songs, his comments on his mom and (now) ex-wife can make you feel uneasy. So now his mom, Debbie Mathers with ID-X has created this CD single. It's certainly a more appropriate response than suing Em.This, of course, is the CD that Em mentioned in his song "Cleaning Out My Closet" from "The Eminem Show". By now, his feud with his mother is well-publisized. The obvious reason to buy this is to get Debbie's side of the story. You can make your own opinion whether Debbie is genuine or a phony. It's best to play the open letter to Marshall next to his song "Cleaning Out My Closet".But don't expect a good piece of music. ID-X is pretty much a low-talent rap duo who's trying to help Debbie plead her case. The song "Set The Record Straight" is an uneven spew on Eminem, using Debbie's comments between the verses. As rap music goes, we've heard much better before.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent record and rebuttal to Marshall Mathers's work.......2001-06-06

This record consists of 3 songs, 2 vocalized by Idx of St. Joseph small cuts of monologue from Debbie Mathers, Eminem's mother. 1 song is hers to read on open letter to her son. As hip-hop, the record is minimalistic but powerful, using small piano chords to set a mood of anxious seriousness. The vocal style and lyrics of Idx (reminiscent of Ice Cube in particular) are aggressive and make a powerful moral statement about both Eminem's family situation and the larger impact of Marshall's music on his audience and culture. This is underscored by Debbie's softer, yet strong "spoken word"-style critique of her own, woven throughout the 'Set The Record Straight" song.

In her own spoken word contribution, "Dear Marshall," Debbie is tempered by her affection for her son, but she doesn't shy away from criticizing him. She faults herself for helping to create a "spoiled child" through her lack of helpful criticism of him growing up. At the same time, she clearly recognizes that Marshall is repsonsible for his own actions and cannot shift blame onto other for his own personal messages. Ultimately, she offers reconcilation.

Overall, the feel of the record is that of a genuine collaboration between the Idx and Debbie. Her style and his interplay very nicely and allow then both to communicate a wide range of emotions, from compassion to an outspoken and fierce defense of the relationship between mother and son.

An excellent record. The reason I can't give it 5 stars is that the chorus to the songs (set the record straight) doesn't mesh as good as it could with the rest of the song--its too warm and just a little saccharine. But it doesn't detract too much from the record---I would definitely purchase this single.

I'm not really a Reef fan and only bought this single because I liked the song Set the Record Straight and I bought another CD where you got a second single free. This is a superb mini album though and I'm glad I have it.

Chuck this CD into your computer and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Someone has put a lot of effort into this thing. The Set the Record Straight video although nothing special, just shots of the band playing on a mini stage and in a hallway but it's there. What makes this CD excellent is that the lyrics are included. You click on lyrics in the menu and all the lyrics for Set the Record Straight are on the screen and as the song plays the sentence being sung is highlighted. You can also click on album and four songs from the actual album appear on the menu. Click on each one and hear about twenty seconds of each song. Those songs are All I Want, Super Hero, Levels and Get Away. You can also click facts and read up all about Reef and their album that Set the Record Straight comes from.

Apart from the computer stuff there's also two other great songs which judging by the four samples are much better than what is actually on the album. Gentle Morning is an excellent smooth light song about not wanting to start again, start it over. The other song Haze is also pretty good. It's a lot slower than the other two songs on this CD. It gets really good just before it ends when the guitar music heats up.

Another good thing about this single is that it is in an album sized case not the half sized things most singles are in so it fits better into CD towers. I'm glad I bought this single and you should buy it too.

I was just listening to the sound samples, Eminem's mom is talking about how excited she was about her sons success, no she isn't. What kind of person sues their own son?

And as for that song, if I were Eminem I'd have made a reply record to those clowns telling them where they can go shove it. They have no idea what went on between Eminem and his mom and they're just trying to make a few extra dollars too.

This is the hottest collabaration since dre and snoop, for real though, it's strait money! Eminems' mom lays out the hooks, and ID-X kills it with the rhymes. While Em's Mom doesn't doing any rappin' of her own, she says her piece through spoken word that is artisticaly spliced throughout the track. Em's Mom pulls no punches on this record; she remained silent while Em dragged her name through the mud over the past few years, but now its her turn. She really does "Set the Record Straight," so if you only buy one record this year, do yo self a favor and year make sure it is ID-X featuring Eminems mom. The only unfortunate thing is that it is not a full length album, WE WANT MORE!!!!
