Album Description

Just back from a bangin' 10-city European tour the Platinum Pied Pipers release their debut album "Triple P" before stepping right back out on USA and Canadian dates. From humble beginnings as guests on a Rewind! compilation two years ago to releasing the soundtrack to the summer of 2005 the Platinum Pied Pipers have made many new friends with their on-stage antics and essential new twist on modern hip hop and soul. The dynamic PPP duo is made up of Waajeed, a collaborator with Jay Dee and Dwele and a founding member of Slum Village, and Saadiq a music student of Motown-er Barrett Strong. Their unique sound is both a polished and catchy but also edgy and raw blend of Detroit hip-hop and soul. Guests include Jay Dee, Spacek and SA-RA Creative Partners to the heavily featured home-grown talents of Tiombe Lockhart, Georgia and Invincible.

4 out of 5 stars Motown goodness.......2007-03-27

I've been hearing PPP and Waajeed-related tracks for the last couple years, and I finally remembered to order this disc. It's a solid album end-to-end, and refreshing to hear a variety of vocalists. Invincible is great on "Detroit Winter" and so is Tiombe Lockhart on her tracks. This is a great bridge between the hip-hop sounds of Jaydee, Slum Village etc. and the more out-there electronic soul compositions of Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.), Theo Parrish, and the Mahogani Music label. This will be in my car for a long time. Would love to catch these guys live if they ever make it to Miami.

I give it 4/5 only because I'm not a fan of Jaydee on the microphone. Otherwise it's a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars It's P, P, and also P.......2005-10-17

I had never even heard of the Platinum Pied Pipers until a month or so ago, when I was looking at another website and it discussed the duo as an artist on the rise. I was surprised to find that my local library had this album, Triple P, but I picked it up and I must say that I'm having a hard time putting it down.

For those that don't know, Platinum Pied Pipers (Waajeed and Saadiq) are the producers that drive this album. The guest stars on here probably won't ring a bell to most, but that's quite all right because the songs are pretty damn good. My favorite song would have to be "Deep Inside" (with Sa-Ra Creative Partners), which sounds like it rides a video game-inspired beat (specifically, Sonic the Hedgehog 1). And "The Pee's" is creative, where every bar begins with a word that starts with the letter "P" (people may say that seems corny, but hey, y'all weren't complaining when Tupac did it).

Another good song is a song that appears to be a favorite among other listeners as well, "Detroit Winter". The songs features a femcee by the name of Invincible, and I agree with the people that compared her to Jean Grae (it's too bad Rawkus Records isn't around any more; she would've fit right in). But singers also impress, like Rogier on the remake of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" and Zeno on "Fever".

Some people didn't like it when Jay Dee got on the mic for "Act Like You Know", but the only problem I have with that song is the chorus. "Lights Out" is also pretty okay (well, the third verse, anyway), but those aspects don't get in the way of the rest of the album. It would be nice if this album from Platinum Pied Pipers was indeed platinum, so pick it up and help it get there.

4 out of 5 stars Needs 2 go platinum.......2005-10-12

You know in the vastness of space that is the music realm usually you don't find much, but I got to say, triple P are stars being born. Pick it up, refreshing, funky, and most importantly far from the generic, the generic mainstream, the generic underground, triple p ... is how do you say, creative. Me likes. And me thinks you will as well.

4 out of 5 stars What pleasure sounds like..........2005-09-27

Very good album. Tight production and well seletcted vocals. An excellent balance of hip-hop & soul.

My favorites:

Stay with Me (Feat. Tiombe Lockhart)
Now or Never (feat. Tiombe Lockhart)
One Minute More (feat. Georgia)

4 out of 5 stars Perfectly Powerful Production.......2005-08-31

Yowza! I didn't know what to expect from this since I had nothing to go on but the pub given by ?uestlove of The Roots. Yet and still, since The Roots are my favorite group of all time, I had to pick it up. Not disappointed in the least.

One thing to notice about this CD is that almost everyone that is singing or rapping is virtually unknown. Doesn't matter though, cause every song captures your attention. Wajeed and his crew have carefully mixed the elements of hip-hop and R&B into a masterful array of mood intense magic.

Standouts:
'Lights Out' feat. Ta'Raach & Georgia is a nice punch to the dome, and really leaves you wanting to hear more. 'Detroit Winter' is a refreshing rap from female MC Invincible. '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' is a great remake by Rogier, and probably my favorite song on the album. Also check out 'The Pees' with Ta'Raach.

Beats:
Everything is slamming. Once again I was impressed by the production immediately, and although it is a different sort of work than you have heard before, don't think you won't like it. Give it a bite and it will definitely reel you in.

Lasting appeal:
Hard not to like it. Most cats will look at the cover and say "Hmmm, haven't seen them on MTV, they must suck." Couldn't be further from the truth. Some people need to take off their blinders and run free with the rest of the herd instead of being taken by the mainstream cowboys. Get hip, because this is what you will be seeing in the upcoming years. I'm telling you now, these cats are on it.
~Ward Prefect

"Either bundle up or burn rubber, cause if you can't handle the winter, you don't deserve summer." -Invincible on 'Detroit Winter'

5 out of 5 stars Vanilla Ice Paved The Way For Eminem..........2007-05-15

...and you KNOW it's true! This is a great album. People hate on Vanilla Ice for no reason. Give the guy a break. I had the honor of meeting him at a concert a few years ago. He's great live and is a really nice guy. He's stood the test of time and has made some music that we'll never forget. This album is no acception. His cover of Survivor is simply awesome. There is not as much metal on this CD as there is on his last couple albums, but there are a few heavy rockin' tracks such as "Step up or Shut Up" & "Persevere" He also shows a serious side on "Tell Me Why"
...If you're considering buying this album, I say go for it... & buy Hard To Swallow and Bi-Pollar while you're at it AND STOP HATING!

1 out of 5 stars What a sick b@st@rd!!.......2007-05-11

So far the only 1 song I like was Ice Ice Baby... ALL of the other songs sucks... yeah yeah Vanilla Ice deserves to die and bury him in the ground right next to Brittany Spears!!!

Vanilla Ice is doing to rap music what the Beatles did to rock music, just kidding.
At a party playing these tracks will most likely break everyone in to hysterics or you won't have many friends.
Be warned,Novelty Alert!!

3 out of 5 stars Decent album.......2006-02-24

Maybe "Platinum Underground" wasn't as good as "Bi-Polar" but it was still a good album. 'Survivor,' 'Dunn Natt' were good songs and it was nice to hear the new version of Ice Ice Baby. I'm tired of everything always saying negative stuff about Vanilla Ice. People don't give him as much respect as he deserves because of his image from the 90's, yet 2pac and 50 Cent get a load of respect for what? For rapping about murder. Give the good MUSCIANS respect and stop hating on Ice all the time. Overall, I liked the album and if you are an Ice fan, buy it.

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it........2006-01-09

I like Vanilla Ice. He's funny. I saw him on "The Farm" and took an immediate interest in him. I don't think he's a great musical artist, don't get me wrong; but I think he is amusing, and certainly the epitome of a one-hit wonder; his stardom lasted so briefly that his single was a hit in 1990 and by 1991 (the release of his film) he had already become a has-been.

In '94 he reinvented himself as a pot-smoking Jamaican-style druggie. Since then he has also reinvented himself as a nu-metal artist (think Limp Bizkit).

Now he's back in R&B/rap form with his newest album, "Platinum Underground," which is a rather puzzling title, since "platinum" is the complete opposite of "underground" -- how can you have a best-selling album and remain under the mainstream radar? Whatzever, yo.

The disappointment here is that the music is incredibly lame. I consider some of V-Ice's recent efforts to be "guilty pleasures" -- I love Too Cold (the heavy metal re-mix of Ice Ice Baby) but this stuff is plain lame. Why is it every time Ice releases a new album to reinvent himself, he also remixes his few popular songs as "proof" of his new image? Here we get yet ANOTHER remix of "Ice Ice Baby" as well as a sequel to "Ninja Rap," the original of which was featured in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze."

It seems like Vanilla's churning out the same stuff all the time now. How many times has he ranted about how MTV tried to twist him into something he didn't want to be? How many times has he referenced Ice Ice Baby, Madonna and his motocross bike in other songs? Well, we get that here - a LOT. "Ninja Rap 2" is a laughably bad song with totally horrendous background vocals ("GO NINJA GO NINJA GO NINJA RAP!" sounds even worse than it did on the original version). What does Bill Clinton have to do with this song? I just heard it and I'm still not sure.

In "Survivor" he sings about how he's fought through the dreck and come out as...er...a survivor. Umm...yeah. Oh, by the way, he mentions MTV, Madonna and his bike.

He begins a lot of his songs with cheesy quotes from old films and radio broadcasts (or so I can only assume). The problem is that his songs are totally HORRENDOUS. "Mecca and Ice" is terrible as is "Trailer Park Mullet Wars." I honestly don't know what he was thinking on either song. They're some of the worst tracks I've ever heard.

On other tracks he varies between copying Eminem, Fred Durst and Bob Marley, vocal-wise. It's kind of pathetic. I feel sorry for The Ice Man. Hopefully he can come back with an album that is, despite its trashy production values, a reasonably guilty pleasure. This is just trashy and none of the songs are even catchy at all, which is a real shame.

4 out of 5 stars Another solid CD from Lil Keke.......2005-09-10

Keke is back with his 2nd album of 2001, and of the 7 albums of his I own this is probably the 3rd best. One of the original members of The Screwed Up Click, Lil KeKe da Don is nothing special lyrically but he has a flow where he can kick it on any beat and it sounds nice. Of the 15 songs on here, 7 to 10 are good or great songs, 4 to 7 are ok and only 1 I skip. Guests rap on about half the songs and do hooks on about 3 more but you still get a good deal of Keke. Production is good on most of the songs on here. DX does 7 songs, Solo does 4, Big Sin does 2, and G Swain & Street Flavor each do 1. A great album to have for fans of real southern rap, not the bull$&*% that's on the radio and all around in 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Platinum in the Ghetto.......2005-07-20

"Platinum in the Ghetto" is a great song. The rest of the songs are pretty much hit or miss. I can see how some people would like songs like "Coast 2 Coast," which I don't like. "Pyrex Shakin'" is my favorite song on the album. As a rapper, Keke is all right... think a slightly weaker Z-Ro. The beats aren't great, but in the end, I still used to bump this CD all the time so I'm gonna give it high marks.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2002-02-23

Lil' Keke "Da Don" is back, straight out from Houston! And he made a great album. "Platinum In Da Ghetto" is a Hit just like Lil' troy's "Wanna Be A Baller", and "Cowgirl" or "Callin' My Name" are really tight tracks. The best Songs are "Mr D.J." and "Off Da Chain". It's one of the best Down South CD's ever!! Listen also to J-Tweezy or the new Master P Album! CYA

Not Bad, I bought it as I wanted the Platinum in da Ghetto song. I finally got the Lil Keke song Keep on Hustlin' although it wasn't on a Keke Album, it was on a D.O.W.N. album called Southern Slang, also happened it was their song not his. This album was worth buying the Southern Slang Album is worth 5 stars.

    3 out of 5 stars DECENT..........2006-05-24

i gave this 3 stars cause only half the album is hot.the beats on the first half on the songs really aren't all that good.plus with the way these cats spit, the songs kinda sound the same.about half way through the album picks up.the production gets better and the lyrics just seem a lot cleaner.this album is NOT amazing, but worth a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Enthusiastic as everyone else.......2006-05-14

First off, Alaska is one of my favorite hip hop artists on the scene today. I really dug his joints on the Atoms CD and think he has amazing talent. In addition, I think the production coming out of Def Jux is always cutting edge and always worth listening to.

However, I just didn't feel this CD. 'Hangar 101' is a great track with an amazing beat and great lyrics. Besides that, the rest of the album does not bang. WindBreeze and Alaska do not have enough variety in their flows to play off each other (for example, the way Cannibal Ox does). Some of the tracks (like 'Take No Chances' and 'Keeps it Moving') are not connected with themselves. The lyrics are good and then move on to another train of thought within the same song. A lot of the songs sound to much the same which makes the CD hard to get in to.

Having said that, the production is excellent. Hangar 18 is pushing the envelope of hip hop and this CD is definately a must for any real heads. I don't think they pulled off what they are capable of doing on this album, but it is still a good listen. I might be unfair to the album because I was expecting so much because of the great stuff that came before from Def Jux and Atoms Family. At least the album leaves you wanting to hear another album from the group, and I for one can't wait.

Best tracks: Hangar 101, Barhopping, and Sadat X appears courtesy of.

5 out of 5 stars Some of tha best.......2005-08-19

This is one of the greats.never lacking on that beats, lyricism or the delivery.saw live at the warped tour even betta live! both windnbreeze & alaska spit faster & better showin' even still they got potential to become one of hip-hops greatest groups

5 out of 5 stars Pushing the envelope of hip-hop.......2005-05-19

It says Definitive Jux on the back, so that was enough to entice my newest purchase from these mad talented cats, Hangar 18. From "Where We At?" on, it is quite apparent that these guys have a large amount of skill. They rap faster than most. And of the MCs that can rap fast, these guys can also rap with clarity. But fast rapping isn't all that this album possesses. There's also a lot of substance to their rhymes. Wind N Breeze and Alaska have sweet old-school flows, and the production brought forth by DJ paWL is air tight, and very unique. And like most Jukies, Hangar 18 brings a unique style to the table, pulverizing hip-hop's previous template.

I was first exposed to this album from the second cut "Where We At?". That was enough to get me interested. But there are far better tracks than that one. The next two, "Beatslope" and "Go Git That" are even more impressive, the latter featuring one of the tightest beats on the record. "Boombox Apocalypse" is a well placed cut, slowing it down a bit, preparing to assault your ears with the rest of the record. Sadat X from Brand Nubian makes an appearance that adds to the old-school feel on "Sadat X Appears Courtesy of...". Then comes "Saved by the Beezy," which features the fastest rapping on the record. They spit an insane amount of lyrics, all backed by a sweet old-school sampled beat (LL Cool J "Rock The Bells"). "Take No Chances" has got to be my current favorite right now, where that actually slow it down a bit (that doesn't necessarily mean they rap slow). They close out the record nicely, pulling all the elements together. All in all, the record is nicely balanced. It isn't fast all the way through, which makes the record that much more enjoyable to listen to.

Don't be fooled by the low price ($3.79 used as of now). Think of it as a prime opportunity to snatch up a great underground hip-hop album. I'm not sure why it's so cheap, but don't confuse it's price for it's listening value.

Definitive Jux has yet to fail me with even a mediocre release. Every artist they sign-on brings something fresh and original to the scene. Whether it's unique flows or unique beats, they're consistently proving that there are a wide array of ways to approach hip-hop as an art form. Hangar 18's "Multi-Platinum Debut Album" proves that once again.

4 out of 5 stars Nice. Real nice..........2005-04-25

Ha, I first heard Hangar 18 when they warmed the stage for Aesop Rock the last time he was around here, and I really liked their old-school lunchtable session style. They really got the place nice and hyped, and brought me to a new group. I and a friend of mine ran into Windnbreeze after the show and bought this off him. Although their flows are absolutely amazing, what really attracted me to them was their personality, the way they completely relished in the fact that their only purpose was to open the stage. The way they loved the fact they were just having fun, and loved selling cds out of their van. The whole show was an amazing experience, but watching these guys really put a new type of smile on my face. They're really fast, and the beats have a nice "Beat Street" feel to them.

    5 out of 5 stars Str8 Gangsta!!!.......2004-08-16

I wuz lucky to find diz cd...mane they put in all tha songz datz str8 gangsta...and i also like tha unreleased songz dey put in here...Yeah their album iz impossible to find (Hard as the f**k) and they put in the best tracks in "Hard as the f**k" into the "Greatest Hits"...which is a good thing so that you wont have to look fo dat album...Seriously I think thiz iz their best cd...you should also check out "The new beginning"...and if your lucky enough to find the both volumes of "Hard as the f**k" den you gotta pick dat up...if your a str8 gangsta rap listener. But tha "Greatest Hits" iz a must have for every gangsta rap listener. Favorite songz: Murder Tale (diz song iz my top fav...dude iz str8 evil on diz track), Gangsta Tale, Ruthless Juveniles, Armed and Dangerous, Gotta Get My Life Right, and Bang Bang.

    Good luck findin thiz

    5 out of 5 stars Found it!.......2003-05-21

I had been looking for the original album for the past 10 years. These cuts are the hardest gangster raps I've ever heard. I had purchased "Hard as the ..." at least 5 times in 91-93 in Phoenix AZ and every homie that listened to the tape tried to jack it. 5 made it. This latest CD is even better, with the best of the original cuts and a great addition of new songs. True G's.

5 out of 5 stars Live and die by Ruthless Juveniles.......2003-02-27

My friends and I lived by Ruthless in the winter of 1992, that being the time of release of their first album, Hard as the
F**k...their music is different from any other I've ever heard. They are from New Orleans without the tacky Mardi Gras [stuff.] It is really hardcore gangster lyrics, but the music is UNBEATABLE. I've bought every other CD out of the MOBO house, and usually they may have one song on them that resembles this disc, but that's it. Ruthless Juveniles' subsequent releases couldn't even touch the splendor of their original release. I was happy to see that this greatest hits disc contains most of the original disc, since Hard as the F**k is IMPOSSIBLE to find. (Really, try it). This is a must have for rap fans--not even a hint of pop.

5 out of 5 stars Ruthless Juveniles--- ruthless as ever.......2000-06-19

I bought this CD for my husband. It is not very well known in the area we live in. The bass hits hard and it turned a lot of heads. I would reccomend this album if you like hard-core rap. Not for the easily offended or faint of heart. I would say it's not very main stream or overplayed on the beats either. Very good album!

    2 out of 5 stars Schizophrenic Hodgepodge!.......2004-07-03

This is an schizophrenic hodgepodge of a compilation with a few of Matthew's alternative radio hits, bizzare picks for album tracks and one rare EP track (Superdeformed) tossed in. Whoever culled these tracks together had no idea about Matthew's music, though I give them credit for adding the overlooked "Thunderstorm" suite from "In Reverse". (It's worth hearing but not in this context).

Leave this cheapo CD made for truck stops and convenience stores in the rack and buy "Time Capsule" instead which has 7 of the 12 tracks here, excellent liner notes and coherent sequencing.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh! Who selected these songs!.......2004-07-03

This is not a review of Matthew Sweet, who is a phenomenal talent, but rather of whoever chose these selections. Were these randomly pulled out of a hat? If you want a greatest hits collection, check out Time Capsule. It's not perfect, either, but it's a heck of a lot closer than this mish-mash. This gets two stars because it's remastered and, frankly, it is Matthew Sweet so all the tracks are listenable. Not his greatest hits, though.
