Thank God for Cross Movement.......2007-06-06
But if this is the Cross Movement's last project as a group, I would like to comment on their impact on me. I'm a 30 year old Black male, but because of my deep southern religious upbringing, was never a major part of "hip hop culture" as a child. I would hear hip hop at school or occasionally sneak to watch a few videos when my parents (father-pastor, mother- missionary) weren't around. I enjoyed some songs, but never became a major hip hop head. Even then, I preferred the Southern style to the East Coast flavor. I can say, without hyperbole, that Cross Movement has had the greatest effect on me embracing some elements of hip hop culture, while also cultivating my faith in Christ.
As a budding, potential scholar myself, I am very much impressed and captivated by their knowledge of the Holy Scripture and their ability to articulate Old and New Testament principles, translating them into an artistic language that is relevant to those alive during this generation. They seem, as a whole, to avoid denominational, schismatic issues and focus primarily on plain Biblical tenets. There is rarely a song that does not include the Gospel or cross of Christ.
Finally, and this is a comment that I make about other Christian artists whom this applies to. They are fully cognizant that they are practicing an expression of their faith which is seen as radical, and that many are hostile to, but they have remained focused, preaching the message of Jesus Christ, His Cross, and His Holiness. They have learned the art of being radical without being rebellious.
Cross Movement members:
If you all read this review-- May God continue to use and bless you all. Continue the work of the Lord in whatever capacity the Spirit leads you.

Other great New Zealand artists to check out if you enjoy this are Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds, Salmonella Dub, Kora, and Hollie Smith(she can be heard on some of FFD's tracks and has an EP out). Conscious Roots 2 is a great compilation to listen to for an ontroduction to different NZ artists. I am a roots lover, so my recommendations reflect that...Enjoy!
"Do it for the love of music.".......2007-02-08
It's a different sounding album then most US music listeners would be accustomed to, as it's a far cry from the pop that's scattered across our top 40. However, in New Zealand, this album has been on their top 40 chart for an astonishing 90 weeks and counting, and was the biggest selling album in NZ in 2006. It's no wonder, as this is a quality album, by a unique musical collaboration. Mixing jazz, electronica, reggae, and soulful vocals, Fat Freddy's Drop have created a mind opening venture into current music trends.
The album features the singles Flashback, a vocal track which sounds reminiscent of 60's Motown; Wandering Eye, probably the most mainstream sounding vocal track on the album; Roady, a playful dub track with some slick lyrics from guest Ladi 6; Ernie, a jazzy downtempo track with a full 4 minutes of soothing piano melody until the vocals finally kick in; and one of my favorites, Cay's Crays, which features the ultra catchy chorus line, "the skank be the rock in my life".
Since this album has been out in other places before it hit the US, we can already seek out several versions and remixes of lots of these tracks. Especially notable is the Jazzanova's Mashed Bag mix of Flashback, where they remove the broken beat sound of the original, and turn it into a an even more vintage sounding vocal track, by infusing it with an all jazz sound. Cay's Crays also has a cool remix out there by One Self, which features two guest reggae vocalists and additional lyrics. A rare, live version of This Room can be found on Gilles Peterson's BBC Sessions compilation. It's exceptional, as they tend to make each track sound unique every time they play it elsewhere. You won't find them sounding the same twice, but you can count on every time sounding especially good, which further proves how diverse and musically talented these guys really are.
A do not miss artist album that needs more exposure her in the US. It's better than the majority of the major artists and tracks now being played on US radio and popping up on our charts. If you are looking for a mix of exceptional vocals and nu jazz sounds, look no further. I can't wait for more from these New Zealand guys, and hopefully their stuff will reach these shores much quicker next time! One last note is that the store I shop at had this erroneously thrown into the pop/rock section, when it should be in either electronic, lounge, jazz, or even reggae. So, check around, order it here, or do whatever you have to to own this great album.

The four Scroggins sisters (Renee, Deborah, Valerie, and Marie) and neighbor Tito Libran burst on to the music scene from left field in 1981 with the remarkable success of "UFO" and "Moody" off their debut 12-inch record. Thanks to the ascendance of hip-hop, the South Bronx was very much on the musical map at the time. But ESG's minimalist funk, which featured live instruments, was closer in spirit to what was coming out of the U.K. at the time--PiL, Gang of Four, and the Factory label (which released ESG's first three songs). Their approach also had kinship to New York bands Konk, Bush Tetras, and Liquid Liquid (the latter two would become their label-mates on the semi-legendary 99 Records). "Moody" entered permanent rotation at New York dance clubs such as the Paradise Garage, while "UFO" became a hip-hop building block, used as sample material for at least a dozen other records (and still counting). The appeal of the tracks lay in the taut interaction between Deborah and Valerie's bass and drums, abetted by Marie and Tito's congas as well as Renee's sparse but precise guitar and unadorned vocal style. The stripped-down nature of the sound lent itself to hip-hop producers' layering on top of it and has helped the music successfully weather the intervening decades--there's none of that "What were they thinking with that synthesizer sound?" problem that afflicts some early '80s music. The CD includes much of their 99 Records output and tracks from their self-titled 1991 release on the Pow Wow label. The 99 Records label itself went down in legal flames, and that Renee Scroggins' apparently owns the rights to the music is noteworthy in itself. But the historical significance and sheer listenability of the music make this a most welcome reissue. --Bob BannisterAlbum Description

Where's the pfunk?.......2005-06-02
As others mentioned, they are analogous to the other groups that get lumped into the funk punk genre (the aforementioned artists), however they do still sound distinct from the others in the genre. The lead vocalist sounds very similar to Neneh Cherry. Hopefully they will still record with current resurgence in popularity of the early 80s genres. This release sounds very good, it sounds like it was mastered from original tapes. The liner notes give some helpful info on the group itself, however more detailed info on the individual tracks (including a track listing), like what the original releases were, would have been helpful.

A triumph of pure innocence.......2004-01-27
Though I have always been repelled by punk's thuggishness, "A South Bronx Story" was the fruit not of thuggishness, but of pure childlike innocence that I had never heard before. The rhythms were indeed rather uncalculated but never noisy, and the vocals of Renee and her sisters possessed a beauty that can only come out of simplicity, as well as a romantic feeling that was could seemingly see both sides ("up, high, down low" being typical) rather than being sentimental.
The songs themselves are distinctly minimalist, chiefly relying on basslines and percussion, but the occasional guitar line is most distinctive because it is so untrained, notably on the famous "UFO", which really does need to be heard in its proper setting rather than as a sample. The dramatic, if not fiery, "Moody" is bound to give any listener an upbeat feeling with its almost real-life description of a girl looking for a lover: Renee never feels guilty of what she wants to say, she just says it. The same feeling permeates all of the first ten songs on the record, with the other highlight being the distinctive beat/minibeat rhythm of "Tiny Sticks" that yet again shows the way thuggishness is so opposed to expression. "My Love For You" might be purely a dance number, but never has something this accessible sound so charming, yet the voices of the Scroggins sisters seem able to bounce back and forward effortlessly and without strain. Even on more conventional numbers in the latter half of the record, like the funk-rock "Erase You" and "Get Funky," ESG failed to lose their trademark na?vete.
Like later trip-hop groups, ESG showed how beautiful simple rhythms can be for listening pleasure. This was not really something to dance to; it was music that shows the beauty of innocent simplicity. The pictures of the Scroggins sisters on the back cover are really charming and should be seen.
Post Funk Pleasure.......2003-11-04
Post funk consists of funky melodic bass lines, spare vocals, and African or Latin percussion usually filtered through digital delay equipment for an atmospheric slightly creepy feel. Unlike the funk music of the seventies, the guitar sound is thin and it's kept in the background.
Even though post funk music had its heyday in the New York City of twenty years ago, it is still heavily sampled by hip-hop artists. "UFO," an ESG track produced by the infamous Martin Hannett, remains an especially popular choice.
ESG's skeletal grooves may sound hollow to fans of either top forty dance music or classic motor city funk. But every song on this CD is fabulous for both dancing and listening. Overall, it doesn't sound nearly as dated as more mainstream eighties stuff, which makes "A South Bronx Story" a timeless treat for the college/indie crowd.

THE WAR CONTINUES, A CLASSIC FOLLOW UP FROM ONE OF THE BEST GROUPS PERIOD........2005-10-08
I will state that this album is in my opinion better than their first, everything I said about their first album still applys here, but this album gives the brothers (Sick Jacken and Duke) more of an opportunity to shine since B real the third member is only featured on one song.
The brothers flex their lyrical muscle with ease here and much credit must be given for their writing which truly is a piece of genius, again their are no filler tracks although a couple of them are a bit to short and end before they should but they still bang with the best of them.
The beats maintain the high quality and in some cases surpass their previous work which just shows you their talent since they produced it themselves.
Another standout album by one of the most slept on groups in hip hop, do your self a favour and pick this up.

The development between this and their first album (also excellent) is obvious and I think they would have gone on to produce more innovative music but now we'll never know. Authentic Dancehall Reggae Album.......2006-08-21
Chances are you have heard the song "Ghetto Story," by Cham featuring Alicia Keys on the radio this summer. Well Cham (the artist formerly known as Baby Cham), has released his latest CD titled Ghetto Story. The 17 track album was produced by David Kelly. If you pop in the CD, you will soon hear the music and lyrics of the song "Ghetto Story," without Alicia Keys. It seems kind of strange that the lesser known version of the song is featured as the first song, but fear not the Alicia Keys version of "Ghetto Story," which is titled "Ghetto Story Chapter 2," is track #15 on the album.
Cham is a true reggae/dancehall artist. On Ghetto Story he doesn't try to be something that he isn't. He delivers true reggae music on this album. His well known song "Vitamin S," is featured on Ghetto Story as well as the popular song "Boom Boom," featuring Rihanna. Other stand-up tracks on the CD include "Bad Boys," featuring Tia Jean and "Girl," featuring Jimmy Cheazetrix.
Cham's latest CD is a solid effort. It has a very authentic reggae/dancehall sound to it, so he will probably have to team up with mainstream artists to get heavy airplay in the U.S. He's off to a great start though.
The CD features two bonus tracks. A third version of "Ghetto Story," featuring Akon and a song titled "Bad Mind."

Album Description
The Simple Twist of Fate CD had its genesis several months ago, when Dave's True Story was invited to play the annual DylanFest at a winery in upstate NY. The assignment was simple--the repertoire must be all-Dylan. The band members (Kelly Flint: vocals, Dave Cantor: guitar, and Jeff Eyrich: standup bass) picked their favorite Dylan songs and went to work on transforming them into the Dave's True Story style. Just before going onstage Dave commented, "either we're going to be tarred, feathered and run out of town for taking liberties, or they're going to love it." The audience apparently loved it, as there were many requests afterward from people to "buy the CD." The band had a great time doing it, so the next week they convened at Bennett Studios in New Jersey and recorded their Dylan program, including "Simple Twist of Fate," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "I Want You," "Just Like a Woman," "You're a Big Girl Now," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," and a classic Dave rendition of "If Dogs Run Free."Customer Reviews:
When the stuff is that good ..........2006-11-10
Nothing wrong with that.
Interesting side project.......2005-12-20
transition to Dylan songs very well. Also nice to hear Dave's more folk side of playing-- with still some nice little jazzy elements. I like all the 'Radio Mix' ones the most I think, & the slightly quickened pace of "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" is a fine contrast to female covers like Judy Collins or Linda Ronstadt (& her lower voice too is distinctive contrast to them). I don't know if we need three versions of "You're a Big Girl Now," but interesting anyway. If you ever wondered what say, Peggy Lee, might sound like singing Dylan-- here's your chance. Maybe they can do some Joni Mitchell songs next!
What I Always wanted done with Dylan!.......2005-12-08
However his voice is not always what I want to hear!
I have always wanted to hear a "cool chick" do Dylan - Joan Baez was great - but hardly cool.
DTS have done a wonderful job.
I am a DTS fan, and also have all their CD's.
Please do more Dylan!
I will buy anything you can do by Dylan!

Starting in 1982 with the release of Afrika Bambaataa's groundbreaking Planet Rock, Tommy Boy Records grew from one of many small, independent record labels to become one of the most influential urban music imprints of the 1980s. The Tommy Boy Story Vol. 1 keeps its focus tight, only looking at key releases from Tommy Boy's 1982-1988 era. However, there may be confusion, since Tommy Boy has no less than half a dozen different "greatest hits: compilations already out, many of which include the same songs. What distinguishes The Tommy Boy Story is its willingness to include a more holistic breakdown of the different genres that Tommmy Boy has promoted, meaning that it's not unusual on here for Bambaataa's disco-licious "Jazzy Sensations" to rub up against the Jonzun Crew's electro-funk classic "Pack Jam," or the Hi-NRG smash, "What's On Your Mind" by Information Society. The diversity and inclusiveness help give Story a more distinguished profile. But for the true Tommy Boy fan, this may not offer enough new angles to attract your eye. --Oliver WangAlbum Description
Indie powerhouse Tommy Boy records was born in Tom Silverman's NYC apartment in 1981 when the entrepreneurial trade mag publisher began releasing the best of the demos crossing his path. He struck gold with the label's revolutionary debut, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock." One of the only 12" singles ever to sell 600,000+ copies, it laid the foundation for the genre-defining house that Tommy built. Tommy Boy and its stable of stars led the way as the first wave of hip-hop's artistic translation of urban street culture bcame a mass-appeal phenomenon. With repeated high-charting crossover success, Tommy Boy earned almost 80 gold and platinum citations, and the label's groundbreaking grooves are essential pillars of hip-hop, as evidenced in this new collection of many of their greatest early tracks.Customer Reviews:
I HATED this stuff back in the day.......2007-05-16
When Tommy Boy and other record companies found out that (for some strange reason), young people were willing to pay money for what was essentially low-quality pre-programmed beats set to some silly chanting, R&B went on a long downhill slide until the recent advent of the neo Soul movement.
As for the "songs," "Planet Rock" was not awful for what it was. The beginning which simulates Bambaataa chanting to the cheers of a partying crowd makes me smile, and he adds some of his infectous personality in this which is unusual for such mechanical music.
"Pack Jam" like most of these other "songs" (?)is just a bunch of nothing. Some studio techincians calling themselves the "Jonzun Crew" (few of them were actual bands) chanting the title to some undistinguished programmed beats. "Play at Your Own Risk" is only distinguished by the incredibly witless chant near the end (Woof woof, hey buddy buddy-hey buddy buddy). Yes folks, once upon a time it had gotten THAT bad. We also get to ridiculous new lows with "Rock the House (They'll Never Be)" which the fools chant "Dig it, a dig it, a dig it, a get on down-ROCK THE HOUUUUSSE!" over and over. Back in the early 80s, this kind of junk made you want to chase after the kids who played this trash loudly on their boomboxes with baseball bats!
Fortuantely, such ignorant "music" (?) is now largely a deservedly forgotten memory and has (wisely) not reappeared in any kind of misguided nostalgia. Only hardcore hip hop historians and people too young to have had good taste when this stuff came out would buy something like this. May those days of ear pollution be gone forever like that other musical scourge of that time called heavy metal and one day, gangster (c)rap will join them.

But even then, The Game displayed the realness that makes him one of Hip-Hop's biggest stars on songs like "Just Beginning", where he airs out his father over some smooth guitar licks, for some of the things his father did to his family while he was growing up. Another song that true Game fans can appreciate is "Truth Rap" where he speaks about life in the ghetto in a way that only a few can when he spits "Nobody knows there neighbors name/ unless they sell weed or cocaine/a lot of black clouds on a block with no rain/The game got a lot to say/ so they wanna take me down in my own front yard like Marvin Gaye." But outside of a few other decent tracks from The Game himself including "Business Never Personal" - "Real Live on blocks, if we aint pushin the rocks, we movin the stocks", Volume II suffers from mediocre production and a lack of creative direction mainly because the star of the show had NO input in the creative process.
It's unclear how much of The Game's material JT has left in his vault but what is clear after listening to this album is that he's probably getting pretty low on his stash, which means that pretty soon JT is gonna have to come up with a new hustle for 2006. Untold Story Vol. II has a similar feel to a recent posthumous Tupac album where the lyrics seem a little outdated and a little too familiar (heard some of these verses on the last album) and the production and the M.C. just aren't on the same page and don't compliment each other at all. Now, while Tupac can get away with that, the same thing can not be said at this point for JT The Bigga Figga or The Game.
