5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful.......2005-10-25

I had the priviledge to hear this music live and found it mesmerizing and challenging. Since I've bought the CD, and listened to it a number of times, the music has really grown on me. I think that it's terribly original but there are some beautiful repeated melodies that unify the albumn and remind me of early 20th century French composition, but then we get arabic rhythms and lots of other stuff without sounding too eclectic, at least to my ears. I've never heard anything like this, especially since there are influences from the Far East as well as Middle East and European. While the santur and oud are the central instruments, Basya draws upon the many talents of her classically trained musicians including Meg Okura (violin) and Daphna Mor (recorder). This is probably ideal music for taking your mind out of the present, if that's where you'd like to go.

5 out of 5 stars Joyfully melancholic.......2004-11-06

Brooklyn born Basya Schechter, leader of the stellar Jewish roots world jazz band Pharaoh's Daughter, here delivers an all-instrumental album of great depth and spirituality. An oud player of uncommon accomplishment, she seems to have a natural affinity for this odd instrument's timbral universe, one which evokes sounds similar to those one associates with a lute, a bouzouki, a sarod, even a berimbau. It's an earthy, emotionally laden sound, one that wafts and slithers off desert sands like the cool even breeze that presages a precipitous nighttime temperature drop in arid landscapes.

One of the keys in making this music come alive is the playing of Alan Kushan on santur, an instrument that sounds like a cross between a zither, a koto, and a prepared piano, lending the aural palette a very oriental cast. Kushan makes this awkward instrument dance and sing with a deeply delved authority and weight. Also contributing mightily is percussionist Jerrod Cagwin, a player whom I've only encountered once before (and I just can't seem to pull up the context, although I remember him being a player of significance), but who here consistently establishes very evocative percussive underpinnings. And Meg Okura shines on violin. Add the coloration of recorder, trumpet, melodica, and cello, and you've got a wide and engaging sound canvas.

Rather simple sounding on the first couple listens, closer attending begins to reveal music of profound nuance and subtlety. There's also a kind of mesmeric, dronelike quality to this music that conjures up feelings of wisdom and tranquility achieved through great suffering. Certainly worth checking out by anyone at all attracted to mystical music of the Middle East.

Album Description

From New Orleans' best known jazz family, Delfeayo Marsalis releases his third album as a leader featuring brother Branford Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Mulgrew Miller, Eric Revis, Bob Hurst, and the late great master drummer Elvin Jones during his historic last studio session. In addition to his accomplishments as a trombonist/composer, Delfeayo is a Grammy-winning producer, considered by far to be one of the top producers in jazz. He has worked on, as producer, co-producer, and engineer, over 100 albums since the 1980s, including albums for Branford and Wynton and Ellis Marsalis, singer Harry Connick, Jr., trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianists Marcus Roberts, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, pianist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. From the first note to the last, his production skills are evident in the structure and cohesion of Minions Dominion.

This was an interesting CD I like the guest artists who provided a new sound to a basic arrangement.

5 out of 5 stars Minions Dominion.......2007-01-22

This is a terrific CD. A tribute to the late Elvin Jones, it is beautifully played and wonderfully reminiscent. Delfeayo has not recorded anything under his own name for 10 years and, hence, may be unfamiliar as a player to many readers of these remarks. That should begin to change in the wake of this effort. The tunes span the gamut from contemporary bop ("B'rer Rabbit" and "Minions Dominion") to traditional (Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me"), to a haunting Coltrane-inspired piece ("Lost in the Crescent") that in this context pays homage to Jones' days with the Great One's classic quartet. There is an original ballad ("If You Only Knew") on which Delfeayo, an unabashed sentimentalist at heart, lays down some of the most beautifully restrained trombone playing I have ever heard. And a straight ahead tribute to Jones ("Lone Warrior") on which I would say his playing reaches a pinnacle had I not heard him play it even better live at the Blue Note earlier this month in New York. A word about the sidemen is in order. The rhythm section, led by Jones himself, and including Mulgrew Miller on piano, is as tight as one would expect. This was one of Jones' last recordings, and all of his gifts are in evidence. Never one for the spotlight, he nevertheless drives the group with a relentless and unerring sense of tone and timing. Delfeayo's brother, Branford, and Donald Harrison each appear on the CD. Check out Branford's playing on "Minions" and "Lost in the Crescent," then go out and buy his own latest ("Braggtown") and listen to "Jack Baker." If there is anyone in jazz today who plays with greater speed, technique and control, I challenge you to name him. WOW! Needless to say, I am really impressed with this CD. I have listened to it about 20 times, and each time, I hear something new. It's a wonderful effort, and it whets the appetite for more from this talented member of the Marsalis family.

Nothing like the sound of a good trombone player and Delfeayo is just that. Elvin Jones is on the CD and sounds wonderful. I love the variety of sound. From Lonesone Warrior to the last cut, just wonderful. The mark for me is would I listen to it again and again, YES I would. I hope Delfeayo makes more and more music.

4 out of 5 stars Good old Kamelot.......2006-08-30

This album is worth having for diehard Kamelot fans. Compared to their recent releases like Epica, The Black Halo, this album lacks the innovative sounds, but the music is yet melodic and great to hear. Even the lyrics are okay. I have Eternity to buy to complete my Kamelot collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you're a hardcore Kamelot Fan.......2005-12-14

Dominion is an enjoyable Kamelot Album. However, it is not on the same level as their other work. The vocals especially are not nearly as solid, they are much more forced, and lack the freedom that is so present in later work like The Fourth Legacy, Epica, or The Black Halo. If you are new to Kamelot, I would definatly not start with this album. Start with one of the previously mentioned, also, The Expedition Live gives a great idea of what Kamelot is capable of and really captures their infectous stage energy. Overall Dominion is a good album, worthy of merit. It's just not on par with their other work.

With over 50 years of performing experience under their belts, the McReynolds Brothers are one of the most recognized acts in bluegrass. Unhappy with the artistic demands of the majors, the brothers founded their Old Dominion label in 1972, one of the first independent labels in bluegrass, and Pinecastle Records' four-CD box set chronicles their first eight Old Dominion releases from the 1970s. The pure harmonies plus the solid guitar work of Jim and the mandolin cross-picking of Jesse are why the duo has endured and are on display here in abundance. The soul-stirring standards of disc 2, which draws from two gospel albums, mark a highlight of this collection, especially a head-popping "Jacob's Ladder." Disc 4 comes mostly from their Live in Japan album and features instrumental standouts such as "Heartbreak Mountain" and "Border Ride," along with a Jim and Jesse original, "Diesel Train," taken from an Alabama radio show, a tune that perfectly exemplifies their homeland harmony. --Andrew Scales

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fine harmony.......2001-09-24

This is a good collection of blue grass music. In my opinion, not equal to the Louvin Brothers-but who is? The music is very good, but if you don't like gospel this set may not be for you as there are a fair number of gospel songs. There are also a few patriotic songs which seem especially nice now following the tragedy at the world trade center. With this boxed set, you get a lot of music for your money! There are also a fair number of "live" recordings-which have their place, but I personally prefer the studio recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Harmonies, musicianship and songs all perfect.......1999-05-15

As is standard with Jim & Jesse, everything here is excellent. Its a rare group that can release a 4 cd set (comprised of 8 original albums from the 1970's) with no clunkers in the set. Jim and Jesse are fabulous musicians and are noted for their outstanding vocal harmonies which come through wonderfully on this set. Some pure bluegrass but most of this is just uniquely Jim & Jesse. I hope a U.S. release of their 1960's work will come out soon.

5 out of 5 stars ... Wake Up!..........2007-05-19

Tangerine Dream (TD) has been making music so impressive and timeless that has allowed them to be out there for 40 years in a row.

Without a question, TD really are the pioneers of electronic-rock music.

Their music is so diverse that has been also labeled as ambient, electronic, new-age, progressive, techno, trance-dance, etc, etc.

I consider myself as an early follower and collector of TD music (from "Electronic Meditation" to "Madcap's Flaming Duty"). For me, their most impressive era goes from mid 70's to mid 80's (from "Phaedra" to "Live Miles"). And from this specific era their best music is (in that particular order):

1. Logos: Live at the Dominion,
2. Underwater Sunlight,
3. Poland: The Warsaw Concert,
4. Pergamon,
5. Paris Dreams Live 1986,
6. Quichotte full concert,
7. Ratikon,
8. Logotypes,
9. Wavelenght: original soundtrack.

"Logos: Live at the Dominion" is pure magic, is their best live performance, and the sound quality is superb. Even today, "Logos: Live at the Dominion" still sounds fresh and unique. I always play this one very loud with my eyes closed and when nobody is at home. Every time that I listen to this album I discover new sounds and secrets. It takes me into a wide-open-relaxing mode... ahh...

...wake up!.

I give "Logos: Live at the Dominion" 10 stars. It is the best of the best of all times.

Greetings from Mexico City.

4 out of 5 stars An upbeat trippy sound one of the best albums.......2007-05-05

This is in my top three for upbeat TD. poland, logos, and white eagle are my favorites. while poland i feel is their best upbeat album. this comes close and is a bit different in that it has a wierd trippy sound unlike most anything you have heard before. the reason it got 4 stars again is because its live and you hear the crowd in the begining and end. the first track is long at 45mins 6secs the second is an encore at 5mins 44secs the first track starts slow and builds up to a peak at around 35 to 36 mins which is my favorite part. definitly worth a buy if your a td fan and dont mind it being live. actually on the second track the live feel just adds a bit of energy to it which is cool.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best TD album PERIOD.......2003-08-08

This was TD at their best. Listen carefully to it - I have owned this album for over 15 years and everytime I listen to it I hear something new. It is almost as if TD purposefully created little treasues buried everywhere in this album begging to be discovered. If you have never experienced TD, this is the best way to get to know them.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good set.......2003-08-06

Being a fan of earlier TD I found this album rewarding as the tunes are well-paced and not too repetitive considering their length. The production is very good and the performance masterful. Quite a lot of sequencing going on so also technically quite an accomplishment. Side two was not quite as interesting as side one.

2 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for TD live classics.......2002-11-26

First of all, I haven't heard the CD release of this album, so I can't comment on the sound quality, though I assume that it will be quite adequate. My comments are based on my 19 year old vinyl copy. But I am very interested in all the positive reviews of this album here. They leave me wondering what I have missed for the last 19 years.

To me, Tangerine Dream ceased to be interesting at this time. They had been pioneers in the field of popular electronic music for a decade. But their music was becoming less and less radical. This album paved the way for such dreadfully uninspired albums as 'Hyperborea' and 'Poland', and the downward trend continued from there.

My suggestion, for someone looking specifically for a good TD live album, would be for them to check out 'Encore'. Although it doesn't have the best sound quality of a TD release, the music is classic Dream. However, for the uninitiated, an easier introduction would be the studio album, 'Stratosfear'. For the more adventurous, 'Zeit' is probably the most unusual - 74 minutes and barely a tune! So grab a drink, turn out the lights and let the sounds take you wherever you want to go......

One final note: the 'Logos' recording may have been made at the London Dominion on November 6th, 1982, but the album cover photo was actually taken at Sheffield City Hall, 2 days before the London concert. I know because I can identify four people in the front row of the audience on the cover photo, including myself. And we were all at the Sheffield City Hall concert.

So I have a certain fondness for this album, but only because I heard the music in concert; and listening to it in 1982, at 100dB was thrilling, if nothing else.

I actually got this one after My passion//your pain. I also got it after Forbidden Empathy, and I was expecting something halfway between the two. It is actually more like My passion//your pain. If you enjoyed that album, I really can't recommend this one highly enough. It has the same basic feel, yet distinct. After only a couple listens, I have really bonded with this CD. I would still consider My passion//your pain to be a superior work, this one is still a must have. I'm upset that I didn't know about them back in 2002, or I could have been enjoying this one since then!

5 out of 5 stars This one is a must.......2004-12-01

There's a lot of Gothenburg out there. That is, bands that try their hand at the Gothenburg sound. You know, wannabes. Now, don't get me wrong, there are a great deal of new acts emerging in the scene, impressing the new audiences with genius in the vein of past melodeath gods... The Duskfall, Vehemence (Though they have their own sound), and even The Black Dahlia Murder.

But, like I said, they are still the end result of a long line of Gothenburg stylists, and Callenish Circle is one of those bands that started way back in the early goings...

Near the front of the line.

If I was going to make a list of all the essentials for a melodeath fan, I'd definitely include In Flames (Lunar Strain, The Jesters Race, Whoracle, Colony, Clayman), At the Gates (Slaughter of the Soul), Dark Tranquillity (Projector, Haven, Damage Done), and then, I'd say throw some Callenish Circle and Soilwork in there too.

Callenish Circle? Which album? Well, Flesh Power Dominion is a pretty solid candidate, to say the least. It really stands alongside the considered greats of it's genre, and delivers one killing song after another, until you can't help but bang your head.

Consider this album as a solid release by a very solid Melodeath band, and expect a variety of songs, delivered in an endless flow of melodeath riffing glory.

The only bad thing about the album is that they don't give the lyrics for "Bleeding."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums ever.......2003-10-30

The CD is awesome, great musicianship. I liked every song on the album, it would be difficult to pick the best one, but I think my favorite is "Suffer My Disbelief".
The sound is more like older In Flames meet Godgory. Very sharp guitar, lyrics are in vein of Children Of Bodom.
Those guys are what Soilwork could only wish to sound like.
So, if you like Gotheburg sound Melodic Death Metal with none of those threndy nu-metal elements, you defenetly should check this album out.

5 out of 5 stars These Guys Rock ! ! !.......2003-03-21

Extremely melodic, unbelievable music for fans of In Flames, Gardenian, Children of Bodom and Dark Tranquility. If you don't have it, buy it because you won't be dissapointed. I can't wait for their next album ! !

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2003-01-19

If you like melodic death metal like in flames, soilwork, and arch enemy this album will definetaly be worth getting. Callenish circle don't play quite as many solos as say arch enemy but they sure are melodic and up there with one of my favorite albums.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Songs missing.......2001-09-17

This is the "Blonde On Blonde" of West Texas. It includes some of Hancock's finest material, like the terrific title track, "Row of Dominoes", "Smokin' In The Rain", "Personal Rendition Of The Blues" and "Wild Horses Chase The Wind". I would only like to make you aware of the fact that for this cd release two tracks have been omitted - a second, acoustic version of the title track, and the long and wonderful talkin' blues song "Split and Slide". There is no information about these omissions on the record and that always irritates me. I know this because I was lucky enough to stumble across the extremely hard-to-find original vinyl Double-Lp at a record fair. (At an incredibly low price....)

4 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL BUTCH HANCOCK.......2000-06-12

Butch Hancock is one of the best Texan songwriters alive and has provided songs for amongst others the TEXAS TORNADOS and EMMYLOU HARRIS. It is a crying shame that he is largely ignored by the record buying public and this fact is evidenced by the quality of "The wind's dominion". If you're not familiar with Hancock, just take a look at the two black and white photographs (barren earth, tractors, dust, wind) in the supplied booklet and you'll have a good idea of the kind of music that awaits you - Texan country/blues/rock at its best. Originally released in 1979 the CD consists of 15 songs, 14 of which were written by Hancock himself. Guest musicians include Joe Ely and Jimmy Dale Gilmore who, together with Hancock, were the influential FLATLANDERS. Although there is hardly a bad track on the CD, highlights include the title track, "Capture...fracture...and the rapture", the guitar and accordion accompanied, seven and a half minute "Eternal triangles" as well as "Row of dominoes". As always, the lyrics are outstanding - follow "the semi-sad ballad of MARIO Y MARIA" and you'll be a Butch Hancock fan for life.
