This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Scrappy man you let us down .......2007-02-04

First of all let me clearly state that im from Atlanta and I am a diehard fan of Lil Scrappy and that is why it breaks my heart to tell you that this CD is garbage. Besides Money in the Bank there are no other standout cuts and it is a shame because the underground mixtape he dropped with DJ Don Cannon early last year was on fire, He and Cannon delivered all new tracks and there were all on point, that was of course before 50's influence which brings us to our problem. The influence of Curtis Jackson A.K.A 50 Cent is very clear on this album. I like 50 but he knows little of the way we make records down south. If the G-Unit boss would have just stayed out he way and let Scrappy pick and choose his own tracks, verses etc. everything may have been fine. The guy is a control freak and as a result nobody in the "A" is pumping this and it is a shame because when Scrappy is on point the boy is unstoppable. This CD is garbage plain and simple and 50's influence is going to put the the crown prince of the south's career in serious jerpody unless he quickly wise's up. This is an honest review from a fan that has been down since day one.I have bought all the mixtapes and everything else he's dropped but, im telling you If you the consumer buy this Cd you will regret it and to Scrappy ditch the G Unit do what's in your heart and get back to business.

Real Good Album.......2007-02-02

Lord Have Mercy on me, never thought lil scrappy could ever come clean. the beats are clean and at times crink, if it wasnt 4 a couple tracks like p**** pop, it would have been a-lot better. Def the best tracks are Livin In the Projects with Pac R.I.P., Born 2 Live, and Lord Have Mercy, if u cant bump this then slap yourself, BME! wheres crunk rock?

Bred 2 Die, Born 2 live to me is a decent release. I'm not sure what people were expecting. As if Scrappy just fell off or something. He sounds the same to me. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion...so you definately have to take listen for yourself. Scrappy still giving you some of that southern crunk on songs like... "Gangsta Gangsta", Touching Everything". And he got a little personal with songs like "livin in the projects", and "Born 2 Live". Overall, if you like Lil' Scrappy then this CD will be added to your collection

Surprising & solid.......2006-12-15

Lil Scrappy switched it up on this album.

For those expecting the media Scrappy with crunk, high energy hits, you're the demographic that'll probably be most disappointed.

Scrappy unveils a surprisingly solid flow with lyrical contents a lot closer to vintage hip hop ... he straight up had me twisted when I heard this album.

This is a 4-star album depending on what flavor of rap music one prefers.

I gave it more of a 3.5-star rating because it's rough around the edges.

But what's important to know about this album is that you won't find any high energy tracks -- other than his two hit singles -- on here.

This album is FAR from commercial ... no sing-songy hooks or repetitive lyrics. I'd say it's actually rather fresh & really easy to vibe to.

Scrap definitely went for trying to prove himself to Northern cats who hate most of what's coming out of the south.

The sad thing is Scrap will probably alienate his core audience which likes his crunk music, meanwhile I'm guessing most hip hop fans who listen to Nas, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Lil Wayne, Mos Def, Common and Chamillionaire will most likely sleep on this album.

Like I said, I'd recommend this album over Young Jeezy ... Scrap's got more talent than what little he'd shown these last three years.

If you want to give a new artist a chance, I'd recommend at least a full listen of this album.

Religious Hit Parade.......2002-04-08

I was torn between four and five stars for this album. In the end, it got five because of the inclusion of the two wonderful traditional Jewish songs - "Alvinu Malkeinu" and "Tzadik Katamar". They are the highlights of the disc for me (no, I'm not Jewish, but that doesn't matter) - and really, where else are you going to find this kind of music?

This CD serves the same purpose as a sampler disc - enticing the listener to buy the full works - Handel's "Messiah", Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", Faurè's Requiem Mass, and what have you. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of "Messiah" - not even the Hallelujah Chorus in its entirety - before I purchased this CD. Now I realize what I've been missing and checked it out from the local library. Ditto for the unearthly beauty of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" - check out the samples of "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" and "Quae Moerebat" if you don't believe me.

The quality of the performers is excellent, and how can ANYONE pass up that price???? That is what ultimately clinched it at a solid five stars. I consider this CD one of my greatest finds - you will too.

Very uplifting.......2000-05-21

This is a great bargain CD with excerpts from some familiar classics and some lesser known treasures. Many listeners, including myself, will want to own the complete performance of most of these works, but this CD is a good way to hear composers such as Lewandowski and Pergolesi, whose works may not already be a part of your music library. The opening movement of Vivaldi's Gloria as performed by the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus conducted by Robert Shaw is terrific. True to his reputation as one of the greatest choral conductors of all time, everything sounds just right under his baton. The other performances were not as highly distinguished in my humble opinion, but overall most of them were good, and many were excellent. For Handel's Messiah though, I highly recommend Sir Georg Solti conducting the Chicago Symphony and Chorus, starring Kiri Te Kanawa (once you hear the Solti version, most other Messiah performances don't feel as moving). And if you enjoyed this CD, you'll really love Kiri Te Kanawa's Ave Maria album.

It's a keeper!.......2007-05-11

This is, hands down, my 3-year-old son's favorite CD. We both have the entire thing memorized. It plays almost constantly when we are in the car, and my son sits in the back seat and hums along. He now recognizes several of the pieces and can point them out when he hears them on other albums, in movies, etc.

My reaction upon receiving this CD as a gift was similar to that of another reviewer...I inwardly groaned at the thought of classical music produced on a synthesizer (the sound is similar to that found on the popular Baby Einstein albums...Baby Bach, Baby Mozart, etc.) However, my son really seems to enjoy the simpler sound, and I have come to appreciate it as well (note that this is not true of all of the Classical Child albums...some retain the "true" sound of the original instruments).

We have several children's CDs of classical music, but this is by FAR the one that we listen to most. Highly recommended to introduce your baby/toddler/pre-schooler to the wonderful world of classical music.

I received "The Classical Child is Born" as a gift for my 2nd daughter and I thought...oh great, ANOTHER classical CD for babies and to be honest, I was going to re-gift it to one of several friends who were expecting. For some reason I didn't.
My older daughter is turning 3 next week and always tells us she "doesn't want the music on" when we are in the car, whether it be ours or hers. I popped this CD in the other day and for the first time, she said "don't turn it off" and continued to tell me that she liked it and asked me questions about the music. My 3 month old absolutely HATES being in the infant carrier and having to stop at red light is sheer torture because she fusses and cries. But, the day I put in the Classical Child is Born CD, she didn't cry or fuss once while we were in the car and, yes, she was awake!
Even I enjoy this music and am on your web site specifically to order another CD, probably the Ballet series since my 3 year old will be starting ballet in the fall, and the Early to Rise as she will also be starting preschool and I can't wait to order the Xmas CD.
Thank you for making such great music for kids! I will definitely purchase and recommend this to other moms I know!

I love this CD! My students love this CD! We often use it as background music while working as individuals or as small groups. It presents some of my favorite pieces with a whimsical flair. Even rap and heavy-metal listeners request it. (The complex polyphonic music even helps stimulate brain activity. For how much more can one teacher ask?)

Great music and an astonishing amount of it!.......2006-02-28

The business folks at DG must have a soft spot for Christmas music, probably leftover goodwill from growing up with caroling in the snow. Certainly the German language nations seem to have excelled in producing a wealth of Christmas tunes, jingles, chorales, hymns, and rounds. This compliation is a two CD set of very good to great singers and performers who are quite to the manor born, or maybe I should say manger.
The easy way to decide if two hours of German Xmas gemutlichkeit is for you is simply to listen to the enormous selections on Amazon's sound sampler.

An excellent compilation of beautiful choral music.......2006-12-01

This is a really good album as a taster for choral music for those who perhaps are new to the genre.

I will readily admit that I am no classical music expert and so was a little unsure what to choose. I was particularly aiming for an album with Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" on it - a piece that I love - and had already picked up two albums where the soprano on the song was far too warbly. "Sacred", however, seems to have chosen the less warbly/operatic and perhaps purer-sounding singers and it has worked really well for me.

Yes, it's got most of the 'famous' songs that one would expect - "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" by Handel, the Mozart, Franck's Panis Angelicus and other well-known songs (including the Lloyd's Bank advert song "Zion hört die Wächter singen" by J S Bach) - and there are no great surprises in terms of the way the songs are performed but it's not an album aiming to be different. It's a compilation pure and simple - no two singers are the same, there are choirboys and female and male so
