Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars for only 3 good songs.......2006-05-12

Who's That Girl?...well was a very diffirent movie and soundtrack.....the only reason I purchased this was for Who's That Girl?,Causing A Commotion, and The Look Of Love......Who's That Girl is Madonna's greatest song she has ever recorded...I wish she would still sing this one at her shows..following Causing A Commotion as well.........This is the type of material I wish Madonna would still make.

5 out of 5 stars THE DVD WILL BE RELEASED ON FEBRUARY 16TH ,2006.......2005-10-31

This movie is so funny! I LOVE Madonna. A very underrated comedy that certainly deserves a dvd release!

4 out of 5 stars Causin a Commotion.......2005-10-06

Good cd, I really like Madonna's songs on the cd, the others are ok.

1 out of 5 stars Let's forget this one happened.......2005-08-16

While it's not quite as horrid as the film of the same name, the WHO'S THAT GIRL? soundtrack is still a rather wretched affair. Due to Madonna's incredible popularity, this disc managed to hit the Hot 200's Top Ten and reach Platinum status in sales, but it's far from a must-own now. Madonna contributes four tracks, and they all sound like TRUE BLUE out-takes.

Madonna wrote the big hit "Who's That Girl?" (#1 Pop, #5 Adult Contemporary, #44 Dance) with Patrick Leonard, and it's a virtual rewrite of their own superior "La Isla Bonita." The wistful ballad "The Look of Love" (also co-written with Leonard) is less derivative, but much more ordinary. The frantic, Steve Bray-produced dance track "Causing A Commotion" (#2 Pop, #1 Dance) fares much better, and is an undervalued gem in Madonna's singles catalogue.

The only other Madonna cut (the generic "Can't Stop," also produced and co-written by Bray) is an obvious throwaway, yet it is still better than any of the other non-Madonna tracks. The remaining cuts are by other "artists" (I use that term loosely) and are anonymous and unlistenable. There's a reason why Duncan Faure and Coati Mundi never went anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Madonna's best movie performance to date.......2005-07-29

I absolutely love this movie. Very cute and funny. Madonna played an awesome part and did a GREAT job. A++ in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Applause for Applause!.......2006-07-13

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars Lauren Bacall !.......2005-07-09

Based on the classic movie "All About Eve", Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her performance in this great musical.

Best tracks include:

But Alive
Applause [Bonnie Franklin of "One Day At A Time" fame!]
Something Greater

Not all the songs are great, but totally worth the buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2004-04-01

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

3 out of 5 stars Welcome CD edition of the original Broadway cast album.......2004-01-17

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

************

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

5 out of 5 stars lauren.......2003-12-04

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

      5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

      4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

      5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2001-02-19

There are not many words that can describe this beautiful performance, so it is better to describe how I felt when listening to it. At times I smiled at the beauty of the piece selected and the grace at which it was played, other times I felt a surge of energy through me as Watts played with power on the Liszt pieces. This is a true gem to add to anyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars "Watts" not to like?.......2001-02-06

I've been a big Andre Watts fan for most of my piano playing years. And the Great Pianists Series does a fine job in selecting two cds of music from his recordings that show Mr. Watts' particular musical skills.

Andre Watts has been criticized for having a somewhat limited repertoire, but this may be because he plays only what he truly loves. And the love shows through especially in the Liszt Campanelle Etude, the Gershwin and the Chopin.

The cd also shows off his tremendous musicianship and expression, which he never sacrifices to technical fireworks, though the fireworks are there. He takes risks and there is a lot of excitement in the music here but also a great deal of soul, something that is sadly missing from so many of today's technically perfect but boring musicians. This is a treasured cd set.

      3 out of 5 stars Who's that mixing this?.......2004-11-10

This was a single I bought to get a different mix of the classic MADONNA hit WHO'S THAT GIRL on CD. And it's not that good. The song is slowed down and the sound is low and too bass-y....probably the lamest Madonna remix I've ever heard...But White Heat, the B side from True Blue sounds just as good as it does on the TRUE BLUE cd and is louder than the Who's that Girl track.Packaging is a slim-line jewel case and features the original 45 picture sleeve from back in the day....Only buy this for collecting purposes only--if you want a copy of this song--just buy the Who's that Girl Soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars Blessing and Curse.......2004-03-21

First and foremost, I agree with the other reviewers. The sound quality is pretty bad. I personally do not find it unbearable per se, but a vinyl copy of this may have clearer and more crisp sound. This is an 80's mix, so true to 80's style, use your graphic equalizer on this one and crank up the 10k! That may help.

That being said, I think this mix is pretty good. This is more of a remix than just an extended version, as the sleeve suggests. The tempo feels a little bit slower, although I don't think it actually is. What makes this mix so good is that the song's freestyle elements are brought out. To non-dance music fans, then, I can see where this mix sounds cheesy-ish, but if you like the 80's Miami/NYC freestyle sound (think Expose, TKA, Company B, Stevie B, etc.), you might enjoy this quite a bit. I was pleasantly surprised.

In my opinion, 1987 is when Madonna's mixes started to get good. Her early mixes seem to be just glossed over with extra synths and tinny-sounding drum overdubs (Burning Up, e.g. deserved a much better mix). This easily beats out the extended versions of Like A Virgin, Dress You Up, and Angel (which is a pretty bad mix, but worth buying for the B-side, the ORIGINAL, untouched, beautiful version of Into the Groove- but any true Madonna fan will tell you that). The poor sound quality of this release just makes it a double-edged sword. A better alternative, if you can find it, is the out-of-print import single that has this remix, along with the Silver Screen Mix of "Causing a Commotion," the original previously-lauded "Into the Groove," AND far superior sound quality. It's harder to find, but well worth the price.

      1 out of 5 stars the worst sound-quality CD I've ever purchased.......2003-09-14

..and it gets worse further into the song. it sounds like a really worn-out cassette, which is really inexcusable for a CD. The remix isn't much to scream about anyway, it's very generic. Definitely one of Madonna's weaker remixes from the 1980's.

5 out of 5 stars Just Who Is That Girl?.......2003-05-05

After three albums, a string of worldwide No.1 hits and record sales inexcess of 50 million, Madonna decided to take a break and turn her attention to acting for a short while. She starred in Who's That Girl, which was a flop film but the soundtrack to the film was a smash. The Original Soundtrack to the film sold inexcess of 8 million copies worldwide and produced a massive UK and US No.1 called, surprisingly, Who's That Girl. The song became Madonna's fifth UK No.1 single and spent 10 weeks on the UK chart in July 1987.

Who's That Girl opens with the tapping of hands on drums which sounds a lot like the first few seconds of La Isla Bonita. In fact, you could mistake it for just that, but then Madonna's usual 80's synthesiser beat kicks in and the song is underway. The backing singers gracefully sing "Who's that girl?" twice before Madonna begins her first verse,"When you see her, say a prayer and kiss your heart goodbye. She's trouble, in a word get closer to the fire." Madonna's vocal style is particularly interesting in this first verse; she's never sung like this before and sounds rather innocent. The first chorus then kicks in with the often misunderstood lyrics of, "Quien es esa nina, who's that girl. Senorita, mas fina, who's that girl." The second verse and second chorus then breeze along smoothly before a short interlude of, "Light up my life, so blind I can't see. Light up my life, no one can help me now." A short instrumental then kicks in that really adds to the fun factor that the song possesses. The chorus is then repeated a few times before the repetition of the interlude and instrumental, before dying down as Madonna's vocals become softer and the backing singers take over.

The video to Who's That Girl is good, but not one of Madonna's best. It begins in a circle of what look like a stone statue temple thing! A man, a young boy and a younger girl start looking at Madonna as she enters this temple in a horrifying grey suit in perhaps the most covered-up image she's ever displayed. The video also features clips of Madonna in the film of the same name and a little cartoon picture of her crossing a street and stopping traffic and dancing with her friends. That sounds very corny, and it is - but it was the 1980's at the time, and everything was corny. While not Madonna's best song, Who's That Girl is a fairly decent pop hit that deserved to be a transatlantic chart topper.

OK, after years of living with my extensive collection of Madonna 12-inch singles, I finally took the financial plunge to upgrade each 12-inch to the CD single re-releases. So far I've been very happy with all the CD-singles until I came to "Who's That Girl". Rest assured, THIS release DOES NOT sound like it does on the original vinyl. It is horribly muffled - I can't believe the final master wasn't checked before mass production, as it is most certainly an error. Madonna would be embarrassed if she knew how horrible this sounded, and Warner should be ashamed. I see Amazon has this listed as a UK release - I bought the German release, but it appears BOTH versions are defective and pretty much worthless. Unless you like listening to your music with a couple of pillows strapped to either side of you head! Go dig through some record bins for the 12-inch - you'll be much happier.

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...

there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.
