5 out of 5 stars NELSON IS SO EXCITING!!.......2005-04-01

I HAVE ALL HIS CD'S BUT TRUEST HEART IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!! WORLD TRAVELER IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CONTEMPORARY JAZZ TUNES!! IT THRILLS ME FROM THE TOP OF MY HEAD TO THE TIPS OF MY TOES! I USED IT IN A FILM CLASS I HAD AS THE MUSIC FOR A TALK SHOW I HAD TO DESIGN AND THOUGHT THAT THERE COULDN'T BE A MORE AMERICAN UPLIFTING ENERGIZING TUNE IN THE RECENT HISTORY!! IF THE MILITARY COULD HAVE A THEME SONG OR THE PRESIDENT THIS SHOULD BE IT!! TRACKS 3 AND 11 ARE ALSO NOTEABLE, HIS TONE IS SO GREAT!!ANYWAY NELSON'S PLAYING IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE PHENOMINAL. YOU SHOULD DEFINATELY HAVE THIS CD IN YOUR NELSON COLLECTION! P.S IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE TO SEE HIM LIVE YOU'VE GOT TO CHECK HIM OUT!!

5 out of 5 stars Nelson Rangell's Best.......2001-04-02

Truest Heart is probably the best of Nelson Rangell's titles in which the multi-talented player shows his awesome proficiency on all his instruments. Although the David Sanborn background is obvious on Rangell, the saxman proves he can be really unique in his style and as addicting as Sanborn himself. Chuck Loeb's masterpiece "World Traveler" is by far the best song of this title, followed by "Truest Heart" and "Western Vogue". On "Sierra La Esperanza" it becomes evident that Nelson sounds as good on tenor as he does on alto sax. For those into the flute and piccolo, "Flight" and "Regatta de Rio" (a bit of the brazillian Samba, thank you Nelson and Mark Portmann) are worth it. In fact, almost all songs of this title are great. For sure Nelson Rangell's best.

Michael Zaretsky delivers a stunning virtuoso performance of this piece. The rendition on viola gives the bach suites a lyrical quality and Zaretsky's rendition is masterful, with an attention to the subtle nuances of every passage and every original notation from one of the earliest manuscripts. A must for the bach suite lover.

4 out of 5 stars Impressed and Empowered.......2006-12-07

World gotcha down? Feel like givin'up? Get a hold of this awesome Sloan Wainwright recording and find yourself inspired to face the day, any day!
What really grabs is the voice. My first listen and I am saying "WOW, who IS this woman?!" Sloan comes from way down deep but, hers is not a blues voice, which brings me to categorizing the music, which I can't. If I owned a record store I am not sure where I would put the Sloan Wainwright cds.
Leave it to say that her cover of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name" is fitting. I guess for lack of better words this is "Power Singer Songwriter".
This recording is chock full of well crafted songs and fitting, excellent production. It is a BIG sound that fills the speakers and the room. (In saying that,I am hopeful of catching Sloan on a stage somewhere, stripped down to a guitar or piano and that other awesome instrument she carries inside her.)
Highly reccomended. Four and three quarter stars!

5 out of 5 stars Best Sloan Set Yet.......2004-06-12

Sloan's 4th CD is her best set yet! Her singing is confident, her songwriting is sterling, and the musicianship is unequivocally excellent. My favorite track is a remake of the title track from her 1998 CD. On this set "From Where You Are" is one of the loveliest of melodies, a slow burning torch song with David Sancious' gorgeous piano, "It's after. It's through. I cleared out your clothes closets. I gave away all your shoes. Rummaged round and touched the stuff that's left of you." Sloan's singing is so powerfully expressive. This was one of my favorite tracks from 2003, simply classic and irresistible. Another favorite for the positive thinking set is the gorgeous midtempo rocker "Good Day to Live." Sloan's voice is unique, most often reminding me of Chicago diva Bonnie Koloc. On this track she belts out the chorus, "Giving into living, it's a good day to live" while the song builds dramatically. Another favorite is the gorgeous melody of "Illuminate" with Sloan's wistful vocal rising and building, "Let spirit fly with the constellations, lift up our voices in prayerful harmony, join together in the jubilation!" The other tracks are also excellent from the haunting title track to her bold cover of U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" to her addictive new original "Ready or Not." The CD concludes with "Summertime," a midtempo track molded from memories past. There are no weak tracks on "Cool Morning." Sloan is simply stunning as one of our best expressive singers. No longer will we refer to her as Loudon's sister or Rufus' aunt; she's her own woman. Don't miss this jewel! Bravo!

Few rappers can drop a solid album while in jail. C-Murder is one of them. This album is by far one of his best if not the best. Havin' tracks with B.G., Capone, Mac, and others. C-Murder is still one of the best rappers in tha game, and this album proves it.

5 out of 5 stars The greatness will give you chills.......2006-01-19

Quite frankly, some of these songs simply give me the chills, because when you hear this guy rap, you know beyond a doubt that what you are hearing is absolutely and utterly the disclosed, unmasked, "real" truth.

This is a sure southern classic and will stand as C-Murder's most conscientious and provocative album yet. Absent of either of his brothers, C-Murder hand-picked some of the most "gutta" New Orleans rapper--at least two of whom are either dead or incarcerated (MAC and soulja slim).

Fiend appears, as well as an unstoppable group of producers. I imagine myself jamming to "Ya'll heard of me" when I am 50--B.G., C-Murder, and KLC may never make another song together again, leaving this a one-of-a-kind grab.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good album.......2005-12-15

C-Murder delivers another good album and surprisingly his incarceration hasn't weakened his abilities too much. This isn't as good as his previous albums but it's still worth checking out. Get this along with Ghetto Bill and The Truth.

Anyone who has been a fan of The Pikes knows that when the band decided to take a break that in our hearts we felt there was more they had to share with the world and after hoping for years that they would find their way back to a recording studio together The Northern pikes gave us all a welcome treat when they reformed the band and released Truest Inspiration. This album is a beautiful collection of music there are lovely slow songs like Echo Off The Beach, Beautiful Music and Out Of Love as well as many tunes that rock just as hard as they ever did in songs like Christ, Colour Into Colour and Little Boy Kelly. This album is a must for any Northern Pikes fan. I think it is a wonderful release.

5 out of 5 stars One of my better finds this year........2003-04-17

This is a great CD. I picked it up just because I love Loudon Wainwright but the style is quite different. The style is sort of contemporary rock-folk. The musicianship is superb and she has a very distinctive voice. I throw this on when I am looking for something a little different. Having picked it up on a whim it has quickly risen to the top of my play list.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Linen review by Greg Linder.......1998-10-20

Dirty Linen review of SLOAN WAINWRIGHT'S CD, Sloan Wainwright (Waterbug 1995) by Greg Linder

Here's a wonderful voice not squandered on mediocre material or produced into oblivion. and here's wonderful material not delivered in a voice we must make excuses for. Sloan Wainwright marks the full length debut of a singular vocalist/songwriter and her equally distinctive band. Sloan is the youngest sister of folk veteran Loudon Wainwright III, but she sounds not a quark like her illustrious sibling. Instead, her voice carries the forthright, husky self-assertion of Joan Armatrading early recordings; her unorthodox phrasing and poetic enunciation would please the young Tim Buckley; and her melodies are the aural equivalent of smoky, tantalizing aromas emanating from a soul kitchen. Ten of the CD's 12 selections are originals written by Wainwright -- most are moving, articulate explorations of love and identity imbued with the acknowledged influence of Joni Mitchell. Hence the piano-and-vocal-only rumination on "I'm Only Listening": "I can hear the truth/Is it true that what I hear could set me free?/It sounds like the three-inch finch/Singing from the thistle weed." On the other hand, "Hey Girl" delivers a 60's-style pop/soul groove, and "Stand" is a resounding remake of Sly and the Family Stone's 1969 call to activism.

5 out of 5 stars Give this one a chance to grow on you.......2006-01-04

It often takes a few listens for an album to grow on me, but this one set a record. It KEPT growing on me with every listen for about a year, until it became a huge favorite. Echolyn is a prog-rock band out of Pennsylvania that over the last 15 years has gradually gone from having more chops than ideas to being the best hope for the future of prog. "Mei" is a single 50-minute album-length song, in the footsteps of "Thick As a Brick". And much as I love Tull's album, "Mei" is better. The album is full of alternating fast and slow sections, with most musical themes getting reprised somewhere along the way. The fast sections rock harder than anything Echolyn had previously recorded, though not as much as 2005's "The End Is Beautiful". William Barnes continues the great clean, crisp production he provided on 2000's "Cowboy Poems Free." Lyrically, the band's website bills "Mei" as "...a combination of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road' and Dante Alighieri's 'Inferno'". On "Cowboy Poems", keyboardist Chris Buzby made the decision that he was going to minimize his use of synthesizers in favor of electic piano and organ, and that choice helps to give "Mei" a timeless feel. There is none of the neo-prog excess of earlier albums like "As the World", though Echolyn still loves to change time signatures. "Mei" and "Cowboy Poems Free" are the two best post-1980 progressive rock albums I've heard. By anyone. I own about a thousand albums, and "Mei" is hovering on the fringes of my all-time Top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Echolyn - Early Outstanding Effort.......2007-02-10

When this album came out I had no idea this band existed. In fact in 1992 for all I knew progressive rock was dead and gone. It was in the late 90's when I discovered Echolyn and went back and purchased their entire back catalogue. Echolyn are still one of the most unique bands, prog or otherwise, to have emerged from the United States in the last two decades. Although the band seems to want to distance themselves from this album, I think it ranks up as one of their best. Yes, they were young and their songwriting skills may have still been developing, but holy cow what potential they had. It all shines through on this album as the band basically throw everything plus the kitchen sink at the listener to see what fits. The first half of the album consists of individual songs that are mostly of the shorter variety. Highlights include "21", "Winterthru", "Memoirs From Between", "A Little Nonsense" and "Here I Am" The band takes classic progressive rock influences, then mold them into a unique sound that is completely their own. There really is no other band out there that sounds like Echolyn. The last half of the album is the 28 plus minute "A Suite For The Everyman". This epic is a tour de force that covers just about every musical style you could mention. The "Those That Want To Buy" section of the piece would prove to be prophetic of events for the band in the not too distant future. Instrumentally the performances are flawless with each band member showcasing their skills throughout the disc. Ray Weston and Brett Kull's lyrics get a bit obtuse at times, but for the most part I like them, and find some of them quite poignant. "I feel like I'm always sawing through the branch that I'm sitting on".........indeed I can relate. Fans seemed to have mixed reactions to this disc, and the band pretty much disses it, but for me it remains one of my favorites. The album would impress Sony enough to sign the band to a major labeled contract........for a while at least.......

3 out of 5 stars Echolyn's weakest album, but it has its moments.......2006-01-04

Echolyn's second album was their weakest. There are two excellent songs, the yuletide "Winterthru" and "Memoirs from Between", with it's chorus of "Set a course, up ahead, straight into heaven". A few other songs are decent, such as "A Little Nonsense", "Here I Am", and "Suffocating the Bloom". But their songwriting skills didn't fully kick in until the next album, 1995's "As the World". While most of the songs here have some catchy moments, most also have some dull moments to balance them. Out of fear of boring the listener, Echolyn threw a ton of riffs into every song to keep changing things up. The result is that instead of getting to hear the best musical ideas in a song one extra time, you have to listen to their 12th-best idea. Most of the lyrics are cheesy self-help philosophy. "One Voice" is a Van Gogh tribute that's as maudlin as Don McLean's "Vincent". The last half of the album is a multi-part "A Suite for the Everyman" that just doesn't work, whether it's the 12-tone stuff keyboardist Chris Buzby picked up in music theory class or the catchy choruses undermined by impossible lyrics like "It's branded me a stoic and that's not what I am". Start with Echolyn's later albums and come back for this one later if you become a big fan.

    3 out of 5 stars original artist.......2002-03-31

This cd is good. Though I must comment on the reviewer above who maintains that this version of "Across the Universe" "...eclipses the...John Lennon vocal" on the Beatles recording. This is WAY not true. The lyrical and transcendent qualities attributed to the recording are far more in evidence in the Lennon vocal, even with the original arrangement. It is perhaps the most emotive vocal John Lennon ever recorded. To praise this recording is fine, but you don't need to denigrate past masters in the process. Much like the Fiona Apple version from a few years ago it's ok, but it doesn't measure up to the original at all. And if it's a stripped down version you want, check out The Beatles "Anthology 2" for the demo version, it's awesome, the best there will ever be.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, mellow, beautiful.......2001-04-28

Sloan Wainwright has an amazingly beautiful voice, and both of her CDs are fantastic. She writes incredibly original and moving songs, and when she covers someone else's material, she transforms it and makes it sound new. You will love this!

5 out of 5 stars IT'S SIMPLE: SHE IS AMAZING!!!.......2001-04-06

Blabbing to the world about Sloan's music is a little bit like telling everybody about a favorite restaurant. You're spoiled....you want to keep this great restaurant (that most of the world doesn't know about - YET!) to yourself. Well, I will not be selfish folks!!....Sloan is a great, great talent. I've seen her many times in concert and all I can say is make it your business to see her live (and buy her two incredible recordings). She and her incredible band are a treat. Sloan is a singer somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Joan Armatrading. And she and her band make beautiful, moving music. She really is unique among the world of singer-songwriters. Her two records are beautiful and have probably out-rotated most of the discs that I own. She's a big talent.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Weir review from The Advocate.......1998-10-20

Right As Wain Sloan Wainwright is not just Loudon's little sis by Rob Weir of the Valley Advocate October 1-7 1998

Last fall Sloan Wainwright was scrambling to finish her second album, preparing to play the Iron Horse for the first time, juggling the demands of touring, raising kids and running a bakery, and struggling to get out from under the shadow of a famous sibling. When you're both a songwriter and the kid sister of Loudon Wainwright III, identity can be an issue.

"Being Loudon's sister has opened a few doors," Wainwright said, "but it's a mixed bag. Sometimes people - especially club agents - say "not another one. Prove to us you're good." She was in the process of asserting her uniqueness when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Touring, the new album and concerns about identity were all put on hold. Doctors found three tumors, all of which were wrapped around nerves crucial for singing; one neck growth was the size of a grapefruit. Fortunately, it was benign, and surgeons removed it along with two small carcinomas that had not invaded surrounding cells or tissue. The requisite vocal nerves emerged unscathed, but there's nothing like a bout with cancer to put things into a new light.

During her recuperation, Wainwright's guitarist and musical collaborator, Steve Murphy, played the Beatles' Across the Universe" for her. "I hadn't even been able to talk for 12 weeks at that point, and I was beginning to feel like I wasn't going to be able to get back on stage again," Wainwright said. "Steve sang `Across the Universe' for me, and I was so moved that I croaked my way through it. To me, it's a very personal, prayerful piece about getting started again."

I also proved to be what the doctor ordered for finishing the long-delayed second album. "I had more or less closed the door on the project," Wainwright said,. "I had been told I'd probably have to take one or two years off. But I was back on stage the second week of April, and soon thereafter we went back into the studio to lay down the last track for the album." From Where You Are was released in late summer on the Waterbug label.

Wainwright's cover of the Lennon-McCartney classic eclipses John Lennon's original vocal. Gone are the sonic embellishments, the echo-chamber effects and multi-tracked strings and vocal overlays that earmarked the Beatles' recording. Wainwright wanted to give a live feel to the song, to echo the way she heard Steve Murphy play it. His acoustic guitar is slowed to allow Wainwright to take advantage of her contralto voice. The impact is at once spiritual and melancholy.

The track embodies the way she and her band approach music -- and the way the resist slick production and saturated instrumentation. Given the talent that backs Wainwright up, it would be tempting to construct musical melanges: Guitarist Steve Murphy's background is in rock; keyboardist Cary Brown was weaned on classical, jazz and ska; percussionist Greg Burrows is schooled in world-beat rhythms; bassist Doug Wray can lay down solid rhythm and blues; and backup singer Liadain Clancy hails from Ireland's famed Celtic clan.

Though the band rocks out on occasion and can dazzle with individual performances, what stands out on both of their recordings is how Wainwright's singular voice is spotlighted within well-balanced compositions. She draws comparisons to Joan Armatrading and Toni Childs in her ability to reach notes so low they're almost a growl, yet soar high on the soprano end of the scale.

Wainwright is well-versed in classic pop and rock (her repertoire includes covers of the Grateful Dead's "Box of Rain," and Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand"), but the heart of the band lies in her own material. "I'm a dreamer and a thinker," she said. "I try to write every day. My dad (a former editor at Time) always walked around with notebooks in every pocket. They say we become our parents and I guess it's true; I have notebooks and scribblings everywhere."

Where her brother is known for offbeat humor and biting satire, Sloan's imagery is often moody or ambiguous. In "I Eye the Lady," she describes a woman endowed with the outward signs of success: a Saab, a high-paying job, a baby and a "honed health club physique." In the song she toys with both envy and contempt, but by the time she concludes with "I am enough," we're still not entirely sure what Wainwright thinks.

She admits that some of her imagery is "cryptic." On "Arm's Length," from her first album she sings "He can hardly guess/What's beneath those eyes/When he looks into the deep blue/That they are/He will only see one man's reflection/And she says it's time/To step away." Although ostensibly about a model and a photographer, it's tempting to draw personal parallels.

There are at least five songs that delve into good-bye themes; the title cut explores the impact of her mother's death. "A lot of my songs are born out of my relationships with other people," Wainwright said. "But I have to admit that I'm reluctant to tear away all the surfaces and show everything that's underneath."

So maybe it's all about identity after all, though Wainwright claims she's done fretting about that. The new album features "Don't Go," a duet with her brother. "There's not much I can do about being Loudon's little sister," she said. "It's just good to be creative with him."

Wainwright's focus now lies in imagining what her future will involve. "I've only done about a dozen shows since my illness. Things feel like they're shifting into a new gear. I know it will be different, but I don't know how."
