Released shortly after his death in 1993, The Yellow Shark represents one of the only accurate performances of Frank Zappa's "serious" orchestral music--at least as far as the composer was concerned. Assembled from a series of sold-out performances in Germany by the Ensemble Moderne, the set includes re-workings of old favorites like "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," live arrangements of some of his hairiest computer music like "The Girl in the Magnesium Dress" and "G-Spot Tornado" and new works by Zappa composed specifically for the event. The performances are astonishing and the music? Pure Zappa. --Andrew BoscardinAlbum Description
The 26-member Ensemble Modern performs FZ's 'most-humanly-impossible-to-play' compositions. Piano duets, string quintets & small ballets. Simply exquisite, with a 60-page booklet to explain it all. Originally released in 1993, it stayed on the classical chart for most of `94. Includes the tracks 'Outrage At Valdez,' 'None Of The Above,' & 'Welcome To The United States', plus arrangements of some of the most fiendishly difficult pieces from FZ's back catalogue & even a 'greatest hit' or two (some would pick this as the definitive version of 'Dog Breath Variations'). Sadly, this was the last album released by FZ during his lifetime. The didipak and the booklet are housed in a slipcase. Rykodisc.Customer Reviews:
Dedicated to experts?.......2007-06-25
It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)

A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29
This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.
There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.
Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.
I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.
I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.
This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).
Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.

Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

Excellent.......2006-08-09
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

Plugged In.......2005-10-26
Maneri has assembled an impressive cast of players for this journey. Drummer Tom Rainey and bassist John Hebert join pianist Craig Taborn, this time on Fender Rhodes, for a free-wheeling rhythm section approach. Taborn himself employed Rainey and Maneri on his exquisite, recent album for Thirsty Ear - "Junk Magic," so their intuitive interaction is well documented. Trombonist Ben Gerstein acts as Maneri's front line sparring partner in addition to a number of guest musicians, including Mat's father doubling on alto sax, piano and organ.
Acoustic instruments are often run through a bank of electronic effects, sometimes so extreme in their manipulation that it can be difficult to discern what instrument is being played. Maneri's violin often sounds like a guitar overdriven to the brink of feedback and Gerstein's trombone is regularly run through a wah-wah pedal. In addition, melatron, organ, laptop and Indian percussion make appearances. While all this makes for a fascinating collection of sound it can sometimes get a bit congested in the album's denser moments.
Opening (and closing) the album with a stately, neo-classical motif, Maneri quickly dispenses with the formalities and launches headlong into the electronic miasma. The album's lyrical centerpiece, "Wound" is primarily acoustic, with Maneri's slightly distorted violin surrounded by ethereal dissonant keyboard washes and sporadic piano interjections, the tune is an exception to the album's gritty electronic rave-ups. The predominant feel here is the rhythmic pulse of free-jazz, albeit with the electronic coloration of early fusion. Hip-hop rhythms and funky break-beats make brief cameos, but stuttering Fender Rhodes, churning percussion, languid bass vamps, Milesian, wah-wah trombone and blistering, distorted violin lines dominate. Vacillating between the spectral and the mercurial, Maneri and company embark on a dynamic set that is rich in improvisational interplay and less concerned with conventional melody and harmony.
Deriving inspiration from the 1970s fusion experiments of Miles Davis, ala "Dark Magus" and "Live-Evil," the group here sounds like a 21st Century version of Herbie Hancock's short lived, but impressive Mwandishi Sextet, one of the best free-jazz-fusion ensembles ever assembled. "Pentagon" may be light on catchy melodies and memorable tunes, but it more than makes up for its impenetrable facade with inventive collective improvisation.

Album Description
Already the subject of international attention, The Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld is an unusual and timely set of songs whose lyrics are direct quotes from the Secretary's Pentagon briefings. Set to music by San Francisco composer Bryant Kong, the texts were previously arranged into poems by Hart Seely and published in a book, Pieces of Intelligence, in 2003.The humorous new songswhich are also serious classical musichave been featured on CNN and NPR's Morning Edition; in dozens of major newspapers; and in television, radio, and print worldwide including the BBC.
If you think of Rumsfeld as a character in a "Gulf Wars II" musical, these are the songs he might sing. The seven songs show the Secretary not only holding forth from his press podium, but in introspective moments as well. These opposing moods are the natural results of the situation in which Rumsfeld finds himself: he is trying to sell a story that can't be sold.
The songs are written in an accessible classical style with strong popular influences, from cabaret to pop. The words to "The Unknown" are now classic ("As we know, there are known knowns "). "Happenings" includes words now spoken by Rumsfeld in Fahrenheit 9/11. Other songs include a waltz and even a Baroque aria.
Debut artists Elender Wall and Kong are currently on their concert tour, Weapons of Mass Distraction. New label Stuffed Penguin Music seeks to bring innovative classical music to a broader audience.
The album features new and rare American art songs, including many first recordings. Cabaret Songs by William Bolcom reflect both German and American cabaret styles. Expunged Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes are given jazzy settings by Jerry Mueller. Finally, the rare Five Lewis Carroll Poems are settings by John Duke of the famous Alice in Wonderland poems.
