5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful.......2005-10-25

I had the priviledge to hear this music live and found it mesmerizing and challenging. Since I've bought the CD, and listened to it a number of times, the music has really grown on me. I think that it's terribly original but there are some beautiful repeated melodies that unify the albumn and remind me of early 20th century French composition, but then we get arabic rhythms and lots of other stuff without sounding too eclectic, at least to my ears. I've never heard anything like this, especially since there are influences from the Far East as well as Middle East and European. While the santur and oud are the central instruments, Basya draws upon the many talents of her classically trained musicians including Meg Okura (violin) and Daphna Mor (recorder). This is probably ideal music for taking your mind out of the present, if that's where you'd like to go.

5 out of 5 stars Joyfully melancholic.......2004-11-06

Brooklyn born Basya Schechter, leader of the stellar Jewish roots world jazz band Pharaoh's Daughter, here delivers an all-instrumental album of great depth and spirituality. An oud player of uncommon accomplishment, she seems to have a natural affinity for this odd instrument's timbral universe, one which evokes sounds similar to those one associates with a lute, a bouzouki, a sarod, even a berimbau. It's an earthy, emotionally laden sound, one that wafts and slithers off desert sands like the cool even breeze that presages a precipitous nighttime temperature drop in arid landscapes.

One of the keys in making this music come alive is the playing of Alan Kushan on santur, an instrument that sounds like a cross between a zither, a koto, and a prepared piano, lending the aural palette a very oriental cast. Kushan makes this awkward instrument dance and sing with a deeply delved authority and weight. Also contributing mightily is percussionist Jerrod Cagwin, a player whom I've only encountered once before (and I just can't seem to pull up the context, although I remember him being a player of significance), but who here consistently establishes very evocative percussive underpinnings. And Meg Okura shines on violin. Add the coloration of recorder, trumpet, melodica, and cello, and you've got a wide and engaging sound canvas.

Rather simple sounding on the first couple listens, closer attending begins to reveal music of profound nuance and subtlety. There's also a kind of mesmeric, dronelike quality to this music that conjures up feelings of wisdom and tranquility achieved through great suffering. Certainly worth checking out by anyone at all attracted to mystical music of the Middle East.

    5 out of 5 stars Sluts are a must!.......2004-09-06

This band is a breath of fresh air admist all the "britney's" and "christina's" of the world (no offense)! The CD is absobloodlylutely marveulous. The music is completely original, the lyrics are quirky, and I hope the Sluts of Trust are here to stay. I COMPLETELY recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Much, Much More..........2004-08-31

I have a problem, not something of any real consequence, mind, but an annoyance none the less. I find myself telling eveyone I meet about the Sluts of Trust, yet when one of my dearest friends asks to borrow my copy, I start growling and revert to my primitive defences, as if I were protecting my last living child, instead of a used CD. Oh and if they want to burn it, it's not pretty. Primatively, think of the meaning of 'burning' (pause). Yeah. Not to mention the fact that you would not be rendering the the proper dues to the artist. (you think I'm obbsessive of the CD? Look a little deeper.) So formally unbenouced,(as of two minutes ago) I proffess my love of the glorious Sluts of Trust, publicly. (a group of high school Sophomores aren't as public as it may seem) Needless to say I probably need another copy so I wont feel deprived while enlightening new sluts, as we all are, most are only in the deepest ignorance imaginable, while I'm drumming my two fore fingers to the various beats of 'Greatest Gift'. It's a vicious cycle.

5 out of 5 stars You wanted the best...........2004-07-19

Sluts of Trust are the best new band right now. They are totally original. Their songs like "Piece o You" and "Leave You Wanting More" are the best. They are full of hard rock riffs and memorable lyrics. They are confrontation and in your face. They are amazing live. It's a record to get. We are all sluts of trust.

5 out of 5 stars Best group out of Glasgow in years.......2004-05-27

I'm afraid I could hardly write a review to do the band justice. No matter what rock you like, you're more than likely to be hooked on to the Sluts, or at least intrigued by them. John's riffs are amazing; Anthony's beats are jaw dropping. Their raw tunes bring you back to your primitive roots and the combination of guitar, drums, and vocals are mind blowing. It's hard to believe that only two guys are making all of that noise. Sometimes the vocals are flawed, but it only adds to their unique quatlity that makes the Sluts such a gem.

Seeing them perform is like being in the presence of a guitar god accompanied by Jesus on the drums. If you ever get a chance to see them live, do. There is just no comparison for them. The Sluts of Trust is an uncommon duo, but that is what makes them wonderful. Get their first album while you can; these guys are going places.

A spellbinding odyssey where every song has its own distinct backdrop luring the listener into experiencing each unique environment. This new collection of songs has been described as both soothing (Gazing At The Stars From The Floating Sea conjures images of the deep green sea, as liquid guitars envelop you, an infinite amount of stars look on, and you float in a protective dream state) and haunting (Soldier Souls Hovering Over The Murky Depths - faint cannon blasts reverberate in the distance as hundreds of soldier souls find refuge in their ascent over the water).

Into Heaven, the debut CD from Sun Palace, is full of richly textured guitars, ambient layers of keyboards, synths, drum loops, dreamy harmony vocals, and a solid foundation of bass and drums. The evocative words and melodies from singer/songwriter Andriette Redmann are sweetly sung, soaring at times and emotionally delivered.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!.......2002-11-19

The latest trend in the music industry is to publish lyrics as poetry (whether it works as poetry or not). Sun Palace is a bit ahead of the game. This really is poetry set to music. Andriette Redmann's voice & lyrics are the perfect complement to the transcendent music of the likes of John Rokosny, Tony Geballe & Chris Fiore. There's even a tip of the hat to Tull with a cover of 'Skating Away'. Definitely a band to watch.

4 out of 5 stars A little tentative, but well done nonetheless........2002-04-05

Here I Am, Rachel Loshak's EP-length first release, isn't quite as confident as her superb album Firefly, but it already manifests touches of that gorgeous sound that would make Firefly the most played album on my list in the past six months.

Loshak's voice and songwriting are a little shy on this EP, the singing less clearly enunciated, and the rhythms a little less eccentric. It's still a beautiful sound, just not as rich. But there's still plenty of good pop songs here, lead track "Around the Bend" and the title track being my favourites among the bunch. I can't wait for her next album.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely voice; heartfelt lyrics........1999-11-17

Wow! I was surprised to see that Rachel Loshak's CD was available on Amazon. I bought it from her at one of her gigs because I was so taken with her beautiful voice accompanied only by the bass she played. On the CD, Ms. Loshak is backed up by a full band, but her lovely voice and heartfelt lyrics still shine.
