Product Description

Mantronik was born Kurtis Khaleel in Jamaica, though his family soon moved to Canada and ended up in New York by the late 70s. Mantronik soon began DJing around the city and was working behind the decks at ManhattanÂ’s Downtown Records when he met MC Tee (born Touré Embden). After the duo had assembled a demo tape, they gave it to William Socolov, president of Sleeping Bag Records. Their full-length became a big hit in the streets in 1985 and even crossed over to join the first wave of Hip Hop chartmakers. The second Mantronix LP, “Music Madness”,released in 1986, continued to keep the duo fresh in the clubs. The album includes the hit “We Control the Dice” and the title track “Music Madness” amoung others. All songs were edited by CHEP NUNEZ, except “Megamix” which was edited by OMAR SANTANA (one of the LATIN RASCALS). Both men are known as two OGs of the crazy edits, the edits were instrumental to this albumÂ’s impact, and influenced a generation of aspiring DJs and producers.

5 out of 5 stars An album full of ideas, energy, colours, rhythms and more ideas.......2007-02-28

This album absolutely put everything else into the shade when it was released. It features an amazing collection of musical ideas and experiments. Oh, BTW, it IS a Hip Hop album!

Unlike many other Hip Hop releases from this time, indeed, unlike many albums of any Pop or Rock genre, which were released at this time, Mantronix exhibit an incredible level of creativity and daring. Yes, there is rapping, but it is the instrumental aspects of this album which astonished and delighted me. Kurtis Mantronik would do things like exchange the bass and snare drums - sampling a snare and then dropping the sound down an octave or two and making it serve as the bass drum and then sampling a bass drum and pushing its sound up an octave or two and have it coming in on the 2nd and 4th beats, replacing the expected snare sound.

This is just one of the many interesting and unique aspects of this album.

I remember reading a review of this album at the time, which suggested that this album presented the sound of the future raiding the music junk of the past.

To many modern listeners, "Music Madness" won't surprise, because many of the things started by Mantronix have since become ordinary parts of contemporary music. So this album needs to be listened to in perspective - it was progressive and iconclastic in its time.

Think of Stockhausen and Musique Concrète with a Hip Hop beat!

Wild stuff!

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition.......2006-03-30

In all seriousness this particular disc is worth it.
It is a mighty short program and some of it misses the mark, but when it does hit its a clean, clear and strong shot.
'We Control The Dice' is in the same league as the best of Rakim lyric-wise and the beats\music is on point too.
Sometimes "Music Madness" does tend to lean toward house and techno but don't let that deter you.
If you can dig 'Hardcore HipHop' from their first release then you shouldn't have any problems with this.
My only complaint is that there aren't ANY extra (bonus) cuts and no info at all is included with the booklet.
This is a re-release in the strictest sense, get it while its still available.

5 out of 5 stars classic dirty south RAP!!.......2005-05-08

Where I'm from this group is well known and the album is a classic. The album is for people who like raw underground RAP groups like Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat and Crime Mob not Gothic, Medieval, Rave and all that other stuff. SOLID FIVE STARZ!!!

1 out of 5 stars Keep It Out of Stock.......2004-12-21

If this CD is out of stock, keep it that way CDNow! It is trash all the way! I think one of the reviewers has a problem. Lacking morals is only one of them. Kind of makes me wonder why CDNow would sell such trash. Sick, just plain sick stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Medieval Music ???????.......2003-11-28

Medieval? NO WAY! Madness? Most definatly! Filthy lyrics which I highly doubt would have been used during the medieval time period. What a waste of disc space and a waste of money. I rate it a big ZERO! Don't waste your time or money.

1 out of 5 stars TRASH at it's best.......2003-11-28

Do not purchase this CD. The first two reviewers are 100% accurate but what kills me is the reviewer from Finland tears it up and yet gives it a 5 star rating? Regardless, avoid it. Not medieval at all.

5 out of 5 stars fools.......2003-08-24

How you thought that a cd that can be found on rap/hip hop area could be medieval? This is gangstarap and it's not even tryin to be medieval!

5 out of 5 stars It Would Be Madness Not to Buy This Album.......2003-06-18

"This Is Madness" is a quality foray into the psyche of young black males who were pushing forward a civil rights movement that was by no means guaranteed continuing success. Their militant approach is certainly dated, nevertheless the lyrics are an artistic success in that they make the listener understand and even feel the emotion of the performer. You get all this, plus the fact that the Last Poets are the poineers of modern gansta rap. I highly recommend this album. p.s. sampled by countless hip-hop artists, including Tribe Called Quest.

5 out of 5 stars Very deep.......2000-09-28

THe Last Poets always backed up what they said just as Gil Scott-Heron did.you feel the intensity&the Messages from these Brothers.it's something that still needs to be dealt with Today.Words that make you Question Surroundings&ask Why? that's the Power of Words&Music.Very Deep&timeless.

3 out of 5 stars interesting stuff.......2000-09-23

i came across this album from a friend who is a big fan of dead prez. he heard of this album when m-1 from dead prez said this was one of his fav albums. this album is an album of beats with spoken word lyrics. messages are clear and interesting. in "black people, what y'all gonna do" the last poets speak of black people uniting to destroy all the negativity around them. "od" speaks of drugs. "white man's got a g-d complex" speaks of white people with their cars, etc. overall, the messages/lyrics are intersting and poignant. i would of liked to see some more intricate beats but i guess that the beats need to be simple so the words can be the centerpiece. recommended for poets and non-myopic people who want to hear great poetry about black men and their problems.

This CD was tight and had some heavy beats for 91/92. Hav & prod can flow really well too. Their rhymes were more uptempo on this than the later stuff. I would recommend this to anyone who likes the REAL westcoast rap. Peace!

    5 out of 5 stars Re-membering Black Love.......2006-05-02

The essence of where rap started, years before PE & Ice Cube. The little known Last Poets left a legacy that continues in the spirit of rappers like NAS, when he said last december, HIP HOP IS DEAD.

2 out of 5 stars Two poets carry on........2005-06-04

The followup to their startling debut, "This is Madness" finds the Last Poets short one member-- Abiodum Oyewole had been arrested and sentenced for robbery, but poets Alafia Pudim and Omar Ben Hassen together with percussionist Nilija carried on, with the concept relatively unchanged. The difference is largely in the mood of the music-- Oyewole presence and his aggressive, political statements (the sort of revolution is coming, don't be scared and get up and take it) is gone.

The result is a somewhat less aggressive and more homogeneous album-- there's really only ten tracks, the "chants" are just the backing vocals more exposed. It works in some areas, but its clear the band wants to move on and doesn't quite know how to-- the really exciting material that keeps the aggressive moods of the opener ("True Blues", "Time", "White Man's Got a God Complex") work best, the rest isn't quite as interesting.

This release features really nicely cleaned sound and mini-LP sleeve artwork and really makes quite a nice presentation.

Start with their debut, if you enjoyed that one, try this one out, its got its share of good material, but the debut is better.
