Remember all of the year-2000 nervousness in the latter part of 1999? That was nothing. As the year 1000 approached, people all over the Christian world were convinced that the Apocalypse--as depicted in the biblical Book of Revelation--and the end of the world were at hand. In one of the more interesting musical program ideas to be inspired by the turn of the calendrical odometer, Anonymous 4 revisits the original "millennium madness" with a disc of chant from around the year 1000--specifically, a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, one of the few occasions on which the liturgy included readings from the Book of Revelation. This is the oldest written Western music to have survived, and it's difficult even to decipher (the original notation has no staff lines or clear indications of rhythm), let alone perform. Yet, the challenges involved seem to have done these ladies good: not only is their performance both assured and confident, but one can hear new facets in their vocal sound--a sound that, however beautiful it might be, some listeners find monotonous. (One new facet is Jacqueline Horner, the quartet's newest member, for whom this is the first recording.) The singers experiment with interpretation of ornaments that are indicated in the manuscript sources (there's a fascinating little trill that sounds rather like a cooing dove); in some of the chants, they add an additional line in accordance with the principles of improvising polyphony that were laid out in 10th- and 11th-century treatises. The entire program seems thoroughly considered, as well as immaculately executed. If you count on the consistently pure, silky tone and meditative quality that has made Anonymous 4 world-famous, you'll definitely find it here; if you've gotten bored with them, you might find this disc a fascinating surprise. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:

For those of you who - like me - have had a couple experiences with Gregorian Chant that moved you deeply - and now you need some Gregorian Chant for those moods when nothing else is right - this is it. "A Mass For The End Of Time" is beautiful, and rich, and the selections intense and moving. This is exactly what most people reading this are looking for. Furthermore the performers seem to have captured the spirit of the music - which is critical because this is spiritual music. So why do I give it 4 stars?
Gregorian Chant is not music that can be removed from its place and time well. It is site specific - it should be heard live in a cathedral whose walls are stone or at least in a place that reflects sound - setting up resonance inside the head. Gregorian Chant is a form of meditation that is distinctly medieval European. The group that performs "A Mass For The End Of Time" is 4 women called Anonymous. But Gregorian Chant was written for men - it has different feel when men do it. Anonymous is very good - but the music would work even better with 4 equally good male voices.

Maybe it's a concept album, but every odd numbered track on Apocalypse is incredible, while the even tracks fall apart or never come together at all. If you listen to the odds, you get PE breaking down issues facing African Americans almost to minutiae, outing everything from corporate sneaker pimps ("Shut Em Down") and 40oz. killers ("One Million Bottlebags") to a racially corrupt government ("By the Time I Get to Arizona"). And, thankfully, most of that dogma is couched inside PE's trademark air-raid drill noisematics so you can shake your ass while PE sublimates the gospel into your brain. Unfortunately, drop the odd tracks and you're listening to a sonically and lyrically inferior album. Suffer through Flav's reprehensible plea for martyrdom in "A Letter to the New York Post," or the inane and superfluous "Bring Tha Noize"--a co-op with Anthrax which takes rap-rock crossover back to a sad place, alongside Lou Reed's "Original (W)rapper". --Todd LevinCustomer Reviews:

Hard-Hitting Soundtrack.......2007-07-16
Great.......2007-01-12
Overload of new metal.......2006-02-03
1. Slipknot - Vermilion
Kicking things off is a more mellow track by the insane Slipknot. It shows a softer side by them and while not my favorite track (the remix on the Underworld Evolution Soundtrack is better) it showcases a creepy eerie vibe and haunting vocals by Cory. Don't get the idea that this is a slow soft song, just not as insane as the normal Slipknot. It still has bite, the teeth have just been dulled a bit. Decent start for the album.
2. The Used - Just A Little
The Used prove here that they are a lot heavier then the average MTV watcher might assume. This song was actually what pushed me to go out and by their latest album with the idea that it has to be good and I was right. The part towards the end where it gets real slow is just awsome. This song is exceptional.
3. The Cure - Us or Them
Not a Cure fan but this song seems to fit well so no complants here. I could have found a more deserving track to go here by some other Roadrunner labelmate, but oh well...it's not terrible.
4. Lacuna Coil - Swamped
If you have never heard of Lacuna Coil you need to buy their CD Comolies ASAP. They are one of the greatest bands ever. This is not Evenescence so if your an Amy Lee hater (I don't know why you would be) don't be afraid to listen to this band. This song is perfect for showing how they can haunt a track so splendedly. The lead singers voice is just pure and beautiful while the male singer offsets that with a rough voice that makes this one duo worth listening to.
5. A Perfect Circle - The Outsider (Renholder Mix)
Everytime Maynard remixes one of his many songs it's worth it and this is no execption. Perfect mix of rock and techno. Love every minute of it. WHen he starts to sing and the beat muffles a bit and it sounds kinda like his voice is broken and distorted it's just awsome.
6. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache
Killswitch has been around for a while but it wasn't until recently that they've been getting cred here. They have a distinct melodicy to their metal, and they remind me a bit of Mudvayne if that's possible. They have a great sense of brutal melody as does Mudvayne and the lead singer can sing and scream to perfectly compliment the music. THis is not my favorite song by them but it's decent...the verses are great and the pounding drums are pretty cool.
7. Rammstein - Mein Teil
This song is my favorite on the Soundtrack. Rammstein have always been a favorite of mine because they have a great way of being the scariest band I have ever heard. They are the perfect example of what Industrial Goth Metal should be and I don't care if you disagree...this song is freaking brilliant. The song alone is about a cannibal and so the creepy factor is high but the industial beat and the lead singers creepy growls and the chuch type hyms in the backdrop make this the best addition to this soundtrack!
8. DevilDriver - Digging Up The Corpses
Dez left Coal Chamber to form this band and while not my favorite band this song is really cool. Straight in your face and the chorus will make ou get up and chant 'Digging up the corpses, tell me another story!"
9. Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine
I really hate this band. The sog choice here is acceptable only because of the female vocals that run over the course of the song but other than that this song is crap...
10. CKY - Escape From Hellview
Decent. I had never heard of these guys before but after hearing this song, while I don't think it fits well with the vube of the soundtrack it's a deent song and I would be willing to check out their other $hit...the song is just a little to catchy, the chorus kinda reminds me of that 'Little Black Backpack' song.
11. Deftones - The Chauffeur
I like this band and was glad to see a rarity show up on the soundtrack versus just a track off their latest CD. Chino sounds great as usual. The song adds a mellow feel to the CD and works well to break up the pace.
12. H.I.M. - Join Me In Death
Yet another mellow track with piano and light vocals. I had heard that this band was insanly brutal but I must have heard wrong. I skip this track...it's just not that great.
13. Demon Hunter - My Heartstrings Come Undone
One of the best bands ever put one of their best songs ever on this soundtrack. This band is insanly brutal and while this song shows a softer side to them it's awsome and just shows the diversity this band has. THe lead singer has a great voice and the band as a whole works well together. This song has a lot of melody intertwined with a lot of power.
14. Thrice - Under A Killing Moon
This song is more along the line of Emo and it works. They remind me of Atryu so if you dig them then you'll like this track. The guitar work is impressive and the overall feel of the song, while not really a perfect fit to the CD, is still decent and listionable. The bridge is killer!
15. 36 Crazyfists - Bloodwork
I love this band and this is one of my favorite tracks by them. THis is a highlight to the album. The baselines provide the base to the song and add some harmonics and Brock Lindows impressive unique vocal talents and you have one kick @$$ song!
16. Cold - End The World (acoustic)
I love this song as well and the acoustic version just adds a stripped down feeling of emptiness to the song that works so well in keeping with an eerie vibe. When you take the lyrics and the meaning behind them and give them this slowed down stipped down raw grundgy unplugged beat it gives it a so much different feeling in general than the original.
17. Rob Zombie - Girl On Fire (Resident Renholder Mix)
SO Maynard remixes a Rob Zombie song and does decent. Not spectacular, nothing like the APC remix he did. I would have chosen a different song to remix...maybe Living Dead Girl, but thats just my opinion...
18. Massive Attack - Future Proof
Great closer because it brings you into the vibe of the film...you can almost close your eyes and see the scenes from the film runing across your mind. Don't listen to this in the dark...just kidding.
ANyways...it was a great effort...fell short a few spots but as a whole it works well...I'd recomend picking up the first soundtrack as well as the Underworld and Saw soundtracks as they provide better compilations of top notch metal and industrial techno remix pieces that should satisfy your cravings!
Definetely worth checking out.......2005-12-12
Take a listen.

The combination of Classical, Jazz and Fusing Rock toped by an opera voice makes this album a real gem.

In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch. Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley

Apocalypse Here and Now.......2005-08-07
However, when the Redux version came out on DVD, I also was looking forward to a newer re-issue of the soundtrack that highlighted the music and left the dialogue out.
I find the synthesized passages and some acoustic instrumentation in their impressive for their time surround sound-like quality quite amazing. The inclusion of the finale where Martin Sheen's character steps out in his "transformed assassin shadow glory" haunting and very moving. It is one of the great moments in modern cinema and in music soundtracks.
The only confusing aspect, which I eventually was able to figure out, was why this soundtrack did not include the really cool and disturbing end credits music. Then I learned that that piece and the others like it used throughout the film were recorded separately on a CD entitled, "The Apocalypse Now Sessions" by the Rhythm Devils. The end credits music appears on the end of that disc on the final track entitled "Napalm for Breakfast." Both these discs make an all around great soundtrack for what I judge as one of the great cinematic works of art.
Love the movie but hate this sound track.......2005-05-05
The tracks were unnecessarily short, I understand that some of the music in the movie repeated at times, but it was still unnecessarily short. The transition from Valkyries to Suzie Q is almost as horrible as the version of Suzie Q they use in this.
The opening is okay. The ride of the Valkyries is good while it lasts. Don't waste your money on this. Just buy the songs on other CDs.

So... is it worth it?.......2007-01-25
Well I think it really depends on just how big of a Slayer fanatic you really are. If you are the type who just has to have everything a certain band puts out then yeah you'll want this. But if you are simply someone looking for the best the band has to offer I would suggest looking elsewhere.
What are some of the pro's and con's of this set?
Slayer (or whoever packaged this set) clearly intended this box-set both to recap their career and to offer lots of unreleased and rare goodies for collectors. Now there are two problems with this. First is the fact that anyone who would be willing to spend $100 on a Slayer product already has all of the tracks that the band is re-capping. In other words most of the first two discs on this set are pointless for the majority of the people who would buy this set as they would already have them all! But... the idea of offering a "best-of" overview as a way of celebrating twenty years of the band's existence does make sense. The next most obvious problem with this however is that American does not have access to Slayer's first 4 releases! It is simply impossible to have a satisfying retrospective of Slayer's career without healthy samplings from Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel and Hell Awaits (luckily there are some live recordings and footage of tracks from these albums to be found on other discs). Next I have to question the sanity of some of the choices on the retrospective... I mean who seriously needs the Criminally Insane (Remix) or the re-working of Aggresive Perfector when they could have put Altar of Sacrifice or Jesus Saves on? Another odd thing is the arrangment of placing Live Undead after South of Heaven and THEN placing Silent Scream after Live Undead... this of course ruins the transition that occurs on the original recording from South of Heaven to Silent Scream. Most of the other track selections are reasonable so I won't complain anymore.
A more interesting idea would be to put two complete concerts from the 80's on the first two discs instead of the "best-of" idea. Say a complete show from the Hell Awaits era or the Reign in Blood era coupled with one from the South of Heaven era. I chose these eras as they are the only era's (sans Diabolous in Musica) not covered in any official live release from the band: the Show No Mercy/Haunting the Chapel era is documented on Live Undead, Seasons in the Abyss is documented on Live: Decade of Aggression, etc. In fact there are NO live videos or recordings from 87-89 on this entire set... in other words while there are performances from virtually every year in Slayer's career on here the entire South of Heaven era remains blank. Very odd.
The rest of the rare tracks on disc two are pretty awful and not really worth talking about.
Now the third disc on the other hand is rather interesting. Aside from the AWFUL "No Remorse (I Wanna Die)" with Atari Teenage Riot this is a pretty good collection of tracks. It has a few songs that have never appeared on any Slayer live performance before. The DVD is even more interesting as it has footage from some of Slayer's earliest shows (the film quality is awful by the way). My only real beef with the material on these two discs is that it has too many tracks that every Slayer fan has already on other live recordings (Mandatory Suicide, War Ensemble, etc.). Personally I would have LOVED a live recording of Kill Again, Behind the Crooked Cross, Crypts of Eternity or even another recording of Black Magic (which is NOWHERE to be found on this box-set as is Captor of Sin).
Finally an entire live CD recorded in 2002 is included in the deluxe version. Overall this is a very good show (it includes the classic At Dawn They Sleep). While far from a flawless performance this is still very enjoyable.
The bonus features include a pointless backstage pass, a photo packed booklet and a cloth wall hangning. The booklet aside from the writing which grows a bit tedious at times is very good.
Overrall this set is really only worthwhile to die-hards. Casual fans will probably be satisfied with getting their first five albums.
OH MY GOD.......2007-01-24
Excllent 5 disc package featuring the big ones and others!!!.......2006-12-22
Not as bad as everyone says it is........2006-08-25
I really dig half of disk two (the songs released on soundtracks and such), all of disk three, the live DVD, and the bonus live disk in the infamous bloodpack. The booklet is filled with important Slayer dates, a biography of the band, and very good pictures of the band, gig posters, and more. The cloth Slayer banner is now hanging up in my room next to my Wolf Park calendar and while the back stage pass wasn't necessary since its just a plastic card that says Slayer, it makes a nice decoration with my Mardi Gras beads.
You "real" Slayer fans who say Slayer sold out with this, cry all you want while I'll be bangin' my head to "Ice Titan" and other sweet rarities.
Nothing more than a CASH GRAB - dont waste your money.......2006-06-28
So, why is there is ONLY 1 CD of rare recordings. Most die-hard Slayer fans probably have their own archives of rare bootlegs CDs and Videos, so there isnt much included in this box set that we havent already seen or heard. Yeah, its cool to hear some of the Home Recordings that Jeff did, but why not include them all !!! Another reviewer has listed all the rare Slayer recordings that SHOULD be on here. I highly doubt most Slayer fans have heard the song The High Priestess, but it should have made its way onto this poor excuse for a box set. In fact, instead of including a DVD of various clips throughout the years, why not just release the DVD or even a CD of SLAYER back in 1983 where they played songs like Simple Aggression, Ice Titan & Night Rider ?
The only decent part of the box set is the Slayer booklet that came with it. Plain and simple, this boxset is just another way for an old metal band to cash in and exploit their loyal fan-base.
What a waste of money.

This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

It's hard to take Apocalypse Dudes seriously, so it's best not to try. Turbonegro's greatest album mixes the best excesses of '70s and '80s hard rock and metal and delivers them with punk rock attitude. The result out-Spinal-Taps Spinal Tap, from the fake prog intro to "The Age of Pamparius" (which takes a swipe at Rush) to the call-to-arms "Rock Against Ass." They have enough catchy hooks to appeal to fans of fellow Scandinavian rockers the Hives, with lowbrow, so-dumb-they're-clever lyrics that should win over fans of the Farrelly brothers. --Robert BurrowAlbum Description

Elegant and uplifting.......2006-10-20
I don't care. It's really all about a cranking, rolling juggernaut of pop rock punk borrowings composted, smoked and blasted out in a totally familiar and yet inventive new format. Hormonally driven fun fun fun with unusual twisty gorgeous chord changes that are so stupidly simple and brilliant. And then Euroboy plays his fantastic riffs. This record pours power into me.

Really more about (...)-kicking rock & roll.......2005-05-03
My basic thesis is that this is a great (and archetypal) showing from a band that does not appear to have been ready-hatched for your 14-year-old nephew by the great music industry Engine of Mediocrity.
TN comes at you nice and hard with a surprising melodic undertone in there that keeps the music mentally interesting. It's definitely not your emo-wuss bilge that makes you beg the band to please grow up, nor is it the trite distorto-crunch mess with some dude trying to growl like he's actually a tough guy.
This is for those of you who would like to get your (...) kicked but would rather not feel like you are a) still working through your teen angst; b) trying to annoy and/or scare your parents (although this will do plenty of that); or c) trying to escape the taint of your middle-class, hyper-feminized, neo-suburban, gotta-go-to-model-UN-so-I-can-get-into-Harvard, the-losers-at-the-soccer-tournament-should-get-trophies-too, upbringing by listening to "hardcore" music.

Album Description
Bringing together the who's who of jazz/fusion guitarists with Warren Haynes Steve Morse, Jimmy Herring, Mike Stern, John Abercrombie, Greg Howe, Dave Fiuczynski, Frank Gambale, Jeff Richman, and Steve Lukather, each pay a fiery guitar tribute to one of the most influential fusion guitarists of all time. These amazing compositions are masterfully played by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Kai Eckhardt, Keyboardist Mitch Forman with performances by violinist Jerry Goodman, the latter three of whom are veterans of Mclaughlin's band. This unique CD features some the most incredible fusion guitar solos available anywhere.Customer Reviews:

A fusion "tribute" treat.......2005-10-10
What makes this tribute different? How about the inclusion of orginal band members to back up the guest guitarists! The contributions of the much underrated Mitchel Forman on Keys and the superb Jerry Goodman (often covering what was Ponty material)on violin are outstanding.
What are the highlights...nearly too many to list: Steve Lukather (Toto)shines on "Birds of Fire'. The Mike Stern (Miles Davis & solo work)and Jerry goodman interplay on "can't Stand Your funk" is exceptional. I bought this in part because I am addicted to the Dixie Dregs but found Steve Morse playing a little too clean. (Most of the other players expanded beyond the Mahavishnu parameters but sadly not Morse). Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit & the Other Ones) strikes a nerve on "Meeting of the Spirits". "Jazz" is a nice unexpected inclusion from '84. Frank Gambale's (Vital Information) cover of "Dawn" again with Goodman is lively and memorable. As much as I admire Warren Haynes (Govt Mule/Allman Brothers) I was skeptical of how he might come across on a fusion LP; in truth "Lila's Dance" may be the best cut on the CD. The final wind down comes with John Abercrombie bringing us back to Earth with "Follow your heart" The whole cd is a solid pleasant surprise. If your an old fan give it a try. If you are a new fan listen to this first and then compare it to the original material; you'll be opening the doors to some great fusion.
A Worthwhile Tribute CD.......2005-09-02
That having been said, there are moments on this guest guitarists' (alongside the house band) CD to justify its purchase. In particular, Mike Stern's: Can't Stand Your Funk...Meaning Of The Spirits featuring Jimmy Herring and some mellow Frank Gambale on Dawn.
I would say Visions can be placed alongside Greg Bendian's Mahavishnu Project (Live!) on your shelf.
