Amazon.com essential recording

Remember all of the year-2000 nervousness in the latter part of 1999? That was nothing. As the year 1000 approached, people all over the Christian world were convinced that the Apocalypse--as depicted in the biblical Book of Revelation--and the end of the world were at hand. In one of the more interesting musical program ideas to be inspired by the turn of the calendrical odometer, Anonymous 4 revisits the original "millennium madness" with a disc of chant from around the year 1000--specifically, a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, one of the few occasions on which the liturgy included readings from the Book of Revelation. This is the oldest written Western music to have survived, and it's difficult even to decipher (the original notation has no staff lines or clear indications of rhythm), let alone perform. Yet, the challenges involved seem to have done these ladies good: not only is their performance both assured and confident, but one can hear new facets in their vocal sound--a sound that, however beautiful it might be, some listeners find monotonous. (One new facet is Jacqueline Horner, the quartet's newest member, for whom this is the first recording.) The singers experiment with interpretation of ornaments that are indicated in the manuscript sources (there's a fascinating little trill that sounds rather like a cooing dove); in some of the chants, they add an additional line in accordance with the principles of improvising polyphony that were laid out in 10th- and 11th-century treatises. The entire program seems thoroughly considered, as well as immaculately executed. If you count on the consistently pure, silky tone and meditative quality that has made Anonymous 4 world-famous, you'll definitely find it here; if you've gotten bored with them, you might find this disc a fascinating surprise. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Want to hear something spectacular?.......2007-05-23

For most folks, Gregorian Chants are probably a little off the beaten track. This is a stellar recording that's hard to beat, and the best of my Gregorian Chant collection. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-03-03

A lovely performance of music from the beginning of the western musical tradition. The vocal quality of the performance is first rate and the music itself is very interesting. Recommended strongly.

4 out of 5 stars Perfectly lovely - wrong, but still perfectly lovely........2004-06-28

For those of you who - like me - have had a couple experiences with Gregorian Chant that moved you deeply - and now you need some Gregorian Chant for those moods when nothing else is right - this is it. "A Mass For The End Of Time" is beautiful, and rich, and the selections intense and moving. This is exactly what most people reading this are looking for. Furthermore the performers seem to have captured the spirit of the music - which is critical because this is spiritual music. So why do I give it 4 stars?

Gregorian Chant is not music that can be removed from its place and time well. It is site specific - it should be heard live in a cathedral whose walls are stone or at least in a place that reflects sound - setting up resonance inside the head. Gregorian Chant is a form of meditation that is distinctly medieval European. The group that performs "A Mass For The End Of Time" is 4 women called Anonymous. But Gregorian Chant was written for men - it has different feel when men do it. Anonymous is very good - but the music would work even better with 4 equally good male voices.

5 out of 5 stars Year 1000--A Mass for the End of Time.......2004-01-04

The year AD 1000 appeared to be an apocalyptic harbringer of destruction to the devout Catholics of Western Europe. This collection of medieval chants based on themes of God's impending wrath and the judgement of the world are excellent primary sources for understanding the mystical religious mindset of the days of yore. Gregorian Chant, while different from Byzantine (Greek) and Russian chanting, is a very methodological and otherworldly form of music. It's monotone is radically opposed to the harsh discord of "rock n' roll" and "rap" music which sound like broken machinery that are so popular among all aspects of society, even the so-called "Christian rock." Although the music itself is sung in Latin, the disc is accompanied by a booklet which gives the lyrics in English translation (along with a few other languages).

5 out of 5 stars A Peace Beyond All Understanding.......2002-04-30

I have always been highly suspicious of "spiritual people". Why them and not me? I was only looking for pretty music when I, a rock n roller by upbringing, purchased this CD. What followed during the listening of this CD, was a deeply meditative state as I let the music, so beautiful words cannot describe, transport me into a deeper consciousness. There I was able to pray from the deepest part of my soul. A first. It has immediately replaced my incremental valium use. I am not a meditator, not into Yoga, don't even like people who are, but this music sounds like the holy ghost if it can be personified, who pleads with such compassion for each and every one of us in a world gone mad. The gregorian chant music on this particular cd seems to be telling the story of time and man to God. It is a sad and compassionate tale that doesn't miss a detail as its heavenly and soulful sound tells in words beyond my understanding a long story filled with strife, sin, pain and sorrow, yet with such love and feeling that it catches its listener up as though it were part of the communication to God and lifts the listener to a serene place where all of the cement jungle, and hostile traffic, and hate among people seem to become the other dimension and not the dimension you find yourself in when listening to this CD. Maybe it is something different for every listener. This was my experience.

Maybe it's a concept album, but every odd numbered track on Apocalypse is incredible, while the even tracks fall apart or never come together at all. If you listen to the odds, you get PE breaking down issues facing African Americans almost to minutiae, outing everything from corporate sneaker pimps ("Shut Em Down") and 40oz. killers ("One Million Bottlebags") to a racially corrupt government ("By the Time I Get to Arizona"). And, thankfully, most of that dogma is couched inside PE's trademark air-raid drill noisematics so you can shake your ass while PE sublimates the gospel into your brain. Unfortunately, drop the odd tracks and you're listening to a sonically and lyrically inferior album. Suffer through Flav's reprehensible plea for martyrdom in "A Letter to the New York Post," or the inane and superfluous "Bring Tha Noize"--a co-op with Anthrax which takes rap-rock crossover back to a sad place, alongside Lou Reed's "Original (W)rapper". --Todd Levin

5 out of 5 stars The godfather of conscious rap.......2007-01-13

I have nothing but respect for Public Enemy. They opened up the doors for rappers who would raher give you insight in music than the same old playlist recommendations. Even though my respect for Flava Flav(or Tasteless Taste)has dwindled over the years, my respect for Chuck D has never changed. Standout Tracks: LOST AT BIRTH, REBIRTH, NIGHTTRAIN, CANT TRUSS IT(I used to be able to sing all the words to this song as a youth), I DONT WANNA BE CALLED YO N***A, BY THE TIME I GET TO ARIZONA, MOVE, I MILLION BOTTLEBAGS, SHUT EM DOWN(the skit at the end of this song is as truthful as it is hilarious), GET THE F*** OUTTA DODGE etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: This is a hip hop classic from beginning to end. A lot of gems on this album, the lyrics were excellent and the production(provided by the Bomb Squad) is solid as usual. One of my favorite Public Enemy albums after It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

4 out of 5 stars Bass for your Face , Not an 8 Track.......2006-01-03

After having released 3 critically acclaimed albums, PE came with Apocalypse 91. Unfortunately, this album (unfairly) marked a long downslide for them. Although the album itself is first rate, critics were already comparing their work to the near-perfect Nation of Millions. While Black Planet continued that barrage, 91 was a different record. It also came out at a time when Professor Griff and Chuck D were coming under heavy fire for statements they had made in press conferences. So as their public image suffered, so did this record. Standout cuts include "Can't Truss It" "Arizona" "Bottlebags" "Shut Em Down" and "Dodge". Granted, this project is more uneven than the other 3 PE tracks to this point, but still a great PE album.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Call.......2005-11-20

The last great album from PE. It was released when the minstrel show known as gangster rap was on the verge of taking over hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album from PE.......2005-08-08

Public Enemy's fourth album is as good as as It Takes a Nation... and Fear of a Black Planet. This album is the first album I listened that got me into Public Enemy. The songs are as political as on the last two plus there are some great lyrical songs on this cd. This also has the rock version of Bring Tha Noize with Anthrax which makes a great song even greater. Flava Flav's track is pretty good too. Favorites include Lost At Birth, Can't Truss It, I Don't Wanna Be Called Yo N**a, How To Kill A Radio Consultant, By The Time I Get To Arizona, 1 Million Bottlebags, More News At 11, Shut Em Down, Get The F--- Outta Dodge, and Bring Tha Noize (w/Anthrax). Highly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Public Enemy No 1.......2005-02-14

This was actually the first hip hop album I bought (aswell as Dr Dre's 2001) when I was 10 in 2000. I didnt know this was rap cause i'd heard "Bring the noise" with anthrax on a video gameandthought it would be rap metal. At first I didn't like it and didnt listen to it for a couple of years, when I did I thought This is sick!

Annnywayz the standoutz on here are Shut Em Down, Bring the noise, nighttain and Dont Wanna be called yo N-gga. This is a less heard of cd than the others but is still dope. Not asgood as the first three but still you should buy it.

And thats all I have to say about that

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hard-Hitting Soundtrack.......2007-07-16

If you liked the first Resident Evil soundtrack, you'll love this one as well. Its more of the same with a few extras thrown in. Its hard, its heavy and really good. I recommend this to any metal fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-12

Bought this for my son and husband and they said it's a great cd, that anyone who liked the movie will love this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Overload of new metal.......2006-02-03

The great thing about Roadrunner Records putting out a soundtrack is that you know the best of the new metal crowd will be gracing the track list and this effort is no exeption. The first soundtrack was stellar and so I knew this one would be as well. The only problem with the Roadrunner soundtrack releases is the editing process...WHY EDIT THE ALBUM...we, the consumer, do not care about a few curse words...we do buy these artists albums! Anyways, besides that issue, this album is really really top notch.

1. Slipknot - Vermilion

Kicking things off is a more mellow track by the insane Slipknot. It shows a softer side by them and while not my favorite track (the remix on the Underworld Evolution Soundtrack is better) it showcases a creepy eerie vibe and haunting vocals by Cory. Don't get the idea that this is a slow soft song, just not as insane as the normal Slipknot. It still has bite, the teeth have just been dulled a bit. Decent start for the album.

2. The Used - Just A Little

The Used prove here that they are a lot heavier then the average MTV watcher might assume. This song was actually what pushed me to go out and by their latest album with the idea that it has to be good and I was right. The part towards the end where it gets real slow is just awsome. This song is exceptional.

3. The Cure - Us or Them

Not a Cure fan but this song seems to fit well so no complants here. I could have found a more deserving track to go here by some other Roadrunner labelmate, but oh well...it's not terrible.

4. Lacuna Coil - Swamped

If you have never heard of Lacuna Coil you need to buy their CD Comolies ASAP. They are one of the greatest bands ever. This is not Evenescence so if your an Amy Lee hater (I don't know why you would be) don't be afraid to listen to this band. This song is perfect for showing how they can haunt a track so splendedly. The lead singers voice is just pure and beautiful while the male singer offsets that with a rough voice that makes this one duo worth listening to.

5. A Perfect Circle - The Outsider (Renholder Mix)

Everytime Maynard remixes one of his many songs it's worth it and this is no execption. Perfect mix of rock and techno. Love every minute of it. WHen he starts to sing and the beat muffles a bit and it sounds kinda like his voice is broken and distorted it's just awsome.

6. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache

Killswitch has been around for a while but it wasn't until recently that they've been getting cred here. They have a distinct melodicy to their metal, and they remind me a bit of Mudvayne if that's possible. They have a great sense of brutal melody as does Mudvayne and the lead singer can sing and scream to perfectly compliment the music. THis is not my favorite song by them but it's decent...the verses are great and the pounding drums are pretty cool.

7. Rammstein - Mein Teil

This song is my favorite on the Soundtrack. Rammstein have always been a favorite of mine because they have a great way of being the scariest band I have ever heard. They are the perfect example of what Industrial Goth Metal should be and I don't care if you disagree...this song is freaking brilliant. The song alone is about a cannibal and so the creepy factor is high but the industial beat and the lead singers creepy growls and the chuch type hyms in the backdrop make this the best addition to this soundtrack!

8. DevilDriver - Digging Up The Corpses

Dez left Coal Chamber to form this band and while not my favorite band this song is really cool. Straight in your face and the chorus will make ou get up and chant 'Digging up the corpses, tell me another story!"

9. Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine

I really hate this band. The sog choice here is acceptable only because of the female vocals that run over the course of the song but other than that this song is crap...

10. CKY - Escape From Hellview

Decent. I had never heard of these guys before but after hearing this song, while I don't think it fits well with the vube of the soundtrack it's a deent song and I would be willing to check out their other $hit...the song is just a little to catchy, the chorus kinda reminds me of that 'Little Black Backpack' song.

11. Deftones - The Chauffeur

I like this band and was glad to see a rarity show up on the soundtrack versus just a track off their latest CD. Chino sounds great as usual. The song adds a mellow feel to the CD and works well to break up the pace.

12. H.I.M. - Join Me In Death

Yet another mellow track with piano and light vocals. I had heard that this band was insanly brutal but I must have heard wrong. I skip this track...it's just not that great.

13. Demon Hunter - My Heartstrings Come Undone

One of the best bands ever put one of their best songs ever on this soundtrack. This band is insanly brutal and while this song shows a softer side to them it's awsome and just shows the diversity this band has. THe lead singer has a great voice and the band as a whole works well together. This song has a lot of melody intertwined with a lot of power.

14. Thrice - Under A Killing Moon

This song is more along the line of Emo and it works. They remind me of Atryu so if you dig them then you'll like this track. The guitar work is impressive and the overall feel of the song, while not really a perfect fit to the CD, is still decent and listionable. The bridge is killer!

15. 36 Crazyfists - Bloodwork

I love this band and this is one of my favorite tracks by them. THis is a highlight to the album. The baselines provide the base to the song and add some harmonics and Brock Lindows impressive unique vocal talents and you have one kick @$$ song!

16. Cold - End The World (acoustic)

I love this song as well and the acoustic version just adds a stripped down feeling of emptiness to the song that works so well in keeping with an eerie vibe. When you take the lyrics and the meaning behind them and give them this slowed down stipped down raw grundgy unplugged beat it gives it a so much different feeling in general than the original.

17. Rob Zombie - Girl On Fire (Resident Renholder Mix)

SO Maynard remixes a Rob Zombie song and does decent. Not spectacular, nothing like the APC remix he did. I would have chosen a different song to remix...maybe Living Dead Girl, but thats just my opinion...

18. Massive Attack - Future Proof

Great closer because it brings you into the vibe of the film...you can almost close your eyes and see the scenes from the film runing across your mind. Don't listen to this in the dark...just kidding.

ANyways...it was a great effort...fell short a few spots but as a whole it works well...I'd recomend picking up the first soundtrack as well as the Underworld and Saw soundtracks as they provide better compilations of top notch metal and industrial techno remix pieces that should satisfy your cravings!

5 out of 5 stars Definetely worth checking out.......2005-12-12

I'm a huge fan of metal and alternative, so I give this album five stars, mostly because of the excellent songs by a few great artists. Sure, there are small flaws, but it deserves all five.

Take a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Cheese, but enjoyable cheese.......2007-04-18

Seriously, this whole thing sounds like The Mahavishnu Orchestra Plays Music from Ben-Hur. Not to discount Ben-Hur, since that's a great movie. But this is so pompous at times it makes Queen seem like a group of little folkies. Take the ending of Vision is a Naked Sword. Coulda came right out of some epic movie. So could the ending of Hymn to Him. Now, these are GOOD songs. Seriously, John McLaughlin is some sort of god in guitarist form. But they're SO CHEESY that it at times distracts from the entertainment value. As usual, the song titles are ridiculous and overblown (a good example is Smile of the Beyond, which happens to be the worst song here - another example is Wings of Karma, which I actually like).
This is kind of a disjointed review, so I think I'll make my point now and shut up: this is a good album (though not as good as The Inner Mounting Flame!) that would've been much better if it didn't tkae itself so seriously. Okay, that's all.

4 out of 5 stars Winning Combination.......2007-01-15

This release featruing the 2nd Mahavishnu group with orchestrations is a winning combination. Some of the strongest and finest Michael Walden playing from this period. John McLaughlin is playing at the highest level and Jean Luc Ponty is a wonderful addition to the group. The only drawback are the vocals, which tend to take this music from the spiritual element to Broadway. I've never understood why opening a can of peas can inspire song and dance.

2 out of 5 stars Tales from Apocalyptic Oceans??.......2006-12-02

I was rather surprised by the mostly glowing reviews this disk has received here. I've been a Mahavishnu fan for ages, but never bothered to buy this disk until a few weeks back when I was able to pick it up for $6 at the Tower Records bankruptcy sale. While quite audacious in its ambitions, it doesn't hold a candle to any of the other early 70's Mahavishnu releases, including Visions of the Emerald Beyond. In fact, for some reason it reminds me of another ambitious, but ultimately flawed album from around that time, "Tales From Topographic Oceans" by Yes. Both albums have their moments, but both also have some very weak moments that render the overall listening experience a bit burdensome.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite alltime.......2006-10-05

Saw this concert in '75(?). Journey was the warm up band playing "Kohutek". Mahavishnu was mind blowing. This album has been my favorite for 30 some years. All "MO" albums are unique and very good for their "style" of music. But Apocolypse transcends them all. His finest work. Don't miss this ! Really. This one album is different. For me, it's better than Miles, Weather Report, RTF, Cobham, Joe Schmoe and your girlfriend. An ABSOLUTE PEAK !

5 out of 5 stars No Comparison.......2006-07-27

It would be very difficult to compare this album to any other work for John McLaughlin.
Encounter between John McLaughlin, Conductor Michael Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra.
This encounter wasn't taken seriously back in 1974, however the stated combination, adding Jean Luc Ponty on Violin and Vocalist Gayle Moran, released a superb complete album.
The combination of Classical, Jazz and Fusing Rock toped by an opera voice makes this album a real gem.
If you are into some Classical, Some Rock and Jazz; If you are into great vocals, Check out this album

In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch.

Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Here and Now.......2005-08-07

I, too, like the other reviewers, had the original soundtrack recording (on 2 cassettes!) I enjoyed listening to it in the dark of my New York City apartment to re-experience the film and to also learn the dialogue.

However, when the Redux version came out on DVD, I also was looking forward to a newer re-issue of the soundtrack that highlighted the music and left the dialogue out.

I find the synthesized passages and some acoustic instrumentation in their impressive for their time surround sound-like quality quite amazing. The inclusion of the finale where Martin Sheen's character steps out in his "transformed assassin shadow glory" haunting and very moving. It is one of the great moments in modern cinema and in music soundtracks.

The only confusing aspect, which I eventually was able to figure out, was why this soundtrack did not include the really cool and disturbing end credits music. Then I learned that that piece and the others like it used throughout the film were recorded separately on a CD entitled, "The Apocalypse Now Sessions" by the Rhythm Devils. The end credits music appears on the end of that disc on the final track entitled "Napalm for Breakfast." Both these discs make an all around great soundtrack for what I judge as one of the great cinematic works of art.

1 out of 5 stars Love the movie but hate this sound track.......2005-05-05

The sound quality sucked.... when i listen to it it seems like it can't be the REAL music from the movie.
The tracks were unnecessarily short, I understand that some of the music in the movie repeated at times, but it was still unnecessarily short. The transition from Valkyries to Suzie Q is almost as horrible as the version of Suzie Q they use in this.
The opening is okay. The ride of the Valkyries is good while it lasts. Don't waste your money on this. Just buy the songs on other CDs.

3 out of 5 stars Apocolypse: Noun.......2004-06-02

Instead of paying $3.99 for a CD featuring "Ride of the Valkyries" I bought this whole CD. It was actually a gift for my Father. I think perhaps it might be improved with the addition of more songs from the era that evoke the sense of futility and dread conjured by the film itself...thus expanding the CD play time to equal the length of the Redux...which was in turn only marginally shorter than the actual war. Not necessarily songs INCLUDED in the film, but rather music you know the guys were listening too. All in all, however, it is almost worth the price...it puts you in the same place as the movie, and that's worth something.

5 out of 5 stars Like Napalm in the Morning.......2003-07-31

This is an excellent CD and one that I've wanted for many years. I, like others who've reviewed the "Redux" CD, once had the soundtrack from the _original_ version of the movie, which was basically the entire movie, complete with all dialogue. I liked that "soundtrack," but what I really wanted was _only_ the music, without dialogue, because if I really wanted the dialogue I'd just as soon watch the movie. Fortunately, the "Redux" CD does indeed have _only_ the music, which is eerily beautiful and haunting. I should point out to potential buyers, as I didn't learn this until I actually listened to the CD, that the version of The Doors' "The End" is actually the interesting remix heard in the movie, complete with synthesizer enhancements, chirping jungle crickets, and Jim Morrison's Oedipal vulgarities brought to the surface, instead of buried under the instrumentation as on The Doors original recording (in which the vulgarities can barely be heard). "Suzie Q" sounds to me an awful lot like the version in the movie, though I'm unsure it's exactly the same; it doesn't matter, it's so darn close. What's really nifty is the intro and conclusion of "Suzie Q," which contains the synthesizer effects heard in the movie as a sort of musical segway. In short, if you love "Apocalypse Now," and what you want is _the music_ from the movie, this CD is perfect. To my ears, the music doesn't sound dated at all; it could've been done yesterday for a new movie.

4 out of 5 stars eerie and forboding..........2001-12-17

I've noticed some griping that this new version of the soundtrack does not contain dialogue, unlike the original 2 disc version that came out originally. well, you can't please everybody. one of my other favourite soundtracks, "Blade Runner" often gets slagged in reviews because it contains some dialogue, which some people find intrusive. if you want to hear the dialogue, watch the movie. this disc is about the music, which is as dark and forbidding as any synth music i've heard, perfectly evoking the chaos and hellish atmosphere shown on screen. track seven, "nung river" has a particularly sinister feel, making that trip up river feel inexorable. "do lung" has a nightmarish carnival sound to it, appropriate to the scene's images of a place spiralling out of control. overall, if you like dark, atmospheric soundtrack music, (it is also very rhythmic) you will enjoy this, even if you haven't seen the movie.

3 out of 5 stars So... is it worth it?.......2007-01-25

Let's face it... the only people who are going to shell out $100 on a Slayer box set are die-hard Slayer fans. So the question is, is this set worth the hefty price tag?
Well I think it really depends on just how big of a Slayer fanatic you really are. If you are the type who just has to have everything a certain band puts out then yeah you'll want this. But if you are simply someone looking for the best the band has to offer I would suggest looking elsewhere.
What are some of the pro's and con's of this set?
Slayer (or whoever packaged this set) clearly intended this box-set both to recap their career and to offer lots of unreleased and rare goodies for collectors. Now there are two problems with this. First is the fact that anyone who would be willing to spend $100 on a Slayer product already has all of the tracks that the band is re-capping. In other words most of the first two discs on this set are pointless for the majority of the people who would buy this set as they would already have them all! But... the idea of offering a "best-of" overview as a way of celebrating twenty years of the band's existence does make sense. The next most obvious problem with this however is that American does not have access to Slayer's first 4 releases! It is simply impossible to have a satisfying retrospective of Slayer's career without healthy samplings from Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel and Hell Awaits (luckily there are some live recordings and footage of tracks from these albums to be found on other discs). Next I have to question the sanity of some of the choices on the retrospective... I mean who seriously needs the Criminally Insane (Remix) or the re-working of Aggresive Perfector when they could have put Altar of Sacrifice or Jesus Saves on? Another odd thing is the arrangment of placing Live Undead after South of Heaven and THEN placing Silent Scream after Live Undead... this of course ruins the transition that occurs on the original recording from South of Heaven to Silent Scream. Most of the other track selections are reasonable so I won't complain anymore.
A more interesting idea would be to put two complete concerts from the 80's on the first two discs instead of the "best-of" idea. Say a complete show from the Hell Awaits era or the Reign in Blood era coupled with one from the South of Heaven era. I chose these eras as they are the only era's (sans Diabolous in Musica) not covered in any official live release from the band: the Show No Mercy/Haunting the Chapel era is documented on Live Undead, Seasons in the Abyss is documented on Live: Decade of Aggression, etc. In fact there are NO live videos or recordings from 87-89 on this entire set... in other words while there are performances from virtually every year in Slayer's career on here the entire South of Heaven era remains blank. Very odd.
The rest of the rare tracks on disc two are pretty awful and not really worth talking about.
Now the third disc on the other hand is rather interesting. Aside from the AWFUL "No Remorse (I Wanna Die)" with Atari Teenage Riot this is a pretty good collection of tracks. It has a few songs that have never appeared on any Slayer live performance before. The DVD is even more interesting as it has footage from some of Slayer's earliest shows (the film quality is awful by the way). My only real beef with the material on these two discs is that it has too many tracks that every Slayer fan has already on other live recordings (Mandatory Suicide, War Ensemble, etc.). Personally I would have LOVED a live recording of Kill Again, Behind the Crooked Cross, Crypts of Eternity or even another recording of Black Magic (which is NOWHERE to be found on this box-set as is Captor of Sin).
Finally an entire live CD recorded in 2002 is included in the deluxe version. Overall this is a very good show (it includes the classic At Dawn They Sleep). While far from a flawless performance this is still very enjoyable.
The bonus features include a pointless backstage pass, a photo packed booklet and a cloth wall hangning. The booklet aside from the writing which grows a bit tedious at times is very good.
Overrall this set is really only worthwhile to die-hards. Casual fans will probably be satisfied with getting their first five albums.

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD.......2007-01-24

It's better then I thought it would be. I mean come on it's SLAYER. A great deal of music for a great price.

4 out of 5 stars Excllent 5 disc package featuring the big ones and others!!!.......2006-12-22

This is a great compilation that will get your fix of slayer. Slayer has always been at the top of the thrash metal scence since they were introduced, and have been in my collection for over 15 years now, but not in mass quantities due to my spending it in other areas of my collection. When this came out, it is a no brain addition to my collection. It gets most of the big hits that I want from slayer without having to buy all of the separate albums at a higher price, and the DVD to remind me of what a real metal show is supposed to be like. The 5 disc package I feel was the easy choice because of the additional live CD that picks up more of the older stuff from slayer. Sure, this is heavy in the post reign in blood years, and it misses much of their new stuff, but It has the meat of slayer, and for a first time buyer, or someone like me who wants more fast, without a lot of cash, this is a good value. Check this out, well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone says it is........2006-08-25

I'm dockin' off an extra star because the price is ridiculously high (thankfully I got this much cheaper on eBay) and putting some "greatest hits" songs in the box set isn't necessary. Everything else is sweet.

I really dig half of disk two (the songs released on soundtracks and such), all of disk three, the live DVD, and the bonus live disk in the infamous bloodpack. The booklet is filled with important Slayer dates, a biography of the band, and very good pictures of the band, gig posters, and more. The cloth Slayer banner is now hanging up in my room next to my Wolf Park calendar and while the back stage pass wasn't necessary since its just a plastic card that says Slayer, it makes a nice decoration with my Mardi Gras beads.

You "real" Slayer fans who say Slayer sold out with this, cry all you want while I'll be bangin' my head to "Ice Titan" and other sweet rarities.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a CASH GRAB - dont waste your money.......2006-06-28

There are a total of 5 discs - 4 CD's and 1 DVD. Two CD's contain studio recordings, which every Slayer fan has. The DVD contains some rare footage, as does 'Disc 3', but a lot of unreleased material is missing. The last disc is a live disc 'Darkness of Christ', and its ok, but really nothing special, as its just Slayer live on the God Hates Us All Tour.

So, why is there is ONLY 1 CD of rare recordings. Most die-hard Slayer fans probably have their own archives of rare bootlegs CDs and Videos, so there isnt much included in this box set that we havent already seen or heard. Yeah, its cool to hear some of the Home Recordings that Jeff did, but why not include them all !!! Another reviewer has listed all the rare Slayer recordings that SHOULD be on here. I highly doubt most Slayer fans have heard the song The High Priestess, but it should have made its way onto this poor excuse for a box set. In fact, instead of including a DVD of various clips throughout the years, why not just release the DVD or even a CD of SLAYER back in 1983 where they played songs like Simple Aggression, Ice Titan & Night Rider ?

The only decent part of the box set is the Slayer booklet that came with it. Plain and simple, this boxset is just another way for an old metal band to cash in and exploit their loyal fan-base.

What a waste of money.

This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest .......2007-06-11

Once in a very great while, God creates a musician who even He is in awe of. Itzhak Perlman is simply the greatest violinist who has ever lived. His Violin Concerto (Beethoven) is perhaps the greatest ever recorded, while here his violin expresses the joys and horrors of Cinema Paradiso and Shindler's List, themes not to be missed by anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting, moving, Perlman is magic!.......2005-04-21

I played the violin growing up and could never imagine it could be played as
beautifully as Perlman can play it. He is unequalled as far as I'm concerned,
but anyone would enjoy this album as it has wonderfully memorable show
tunes like Cinema Paradiso and Schindler's List and the most beautiful
rendition ever of Michel Legrand's If It takes forever, I will wait for you
from UMBRELLAS of CHERBOURG.
It stays in my car CD player where I enjoy it over and over!

It's hard to take Apocalypse Dudes seriously, so it's best not to try. Turbonegro's greatest album mixes the best excesses of '70s and '80s hard rock and metal and delivers them with punk rock attitude. The result out-Spinal-Taps Spinal Tap, from the fake prog intro to "The Age of Pamparius" (which takes a swipe at Rush) to the call-to-arms "Rock Against Ass." They have enough catchy hooks to appeal to fans of fellow Scandinavian rockers the Hives, with lowbrow, so-dumb-they're-clever lyrics that should win over fans of the Farrelly brothers. --Robert Burrow

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and uplifting.......2006-10-20

Initially the lyrics are scary fun and so clever. Am I allowed to think this is funny? Of course. But they are so very non-PC... And what do they really mean by this? Then I sang "Don't say motherf*cker, motherf*cker" and "Rah rah rah rah rendezvous with ANUS -- ANUS!" about a hundred times along with Hank von Helvete and it was just words that didn't bother me to say anymore. Am I getting coarsened and stupidified?

I don't care. It's really all about a cranking, rolling juggernaut of pop rock punk borrowings composted, smoked and blasted out in a totally familiar and yet inventive new format. Hormonally driven fun fun fun with unusual twisty gorgeous chord changes that are so stupidly simple and brilliant. And then Euroboy plays his fantastic riffs. This record pours power into me.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album of All time.......2006-05-13

I know that's a pretty massive claim, but I can more than back it up. Take everything that should be great about an album, then look at this one. A good album should musically be good. AD has some of the best music you will ever hear. Not this 3 chord bs, nor the hubris of Phish. At the same time, the music itself is part of the brilliance. Solos (insanely fast ones at that) dot the album. They're literally everywhere. Yet, at the same time, that's the point. The solos are meant to be humorous, as they go where they don't belong. Think of a more talented version of Spinal Tap. At the same time though, they have enough originality and pop sensibilities that they never fall into self parody, even though you couldn't tell looking at a lyric sheet, which brings us to point number two. Lyrics. They fit into the music, adding to it. When you hear the epic intro to Age of Pamparius, you expect the lyrics to come and be some life-affirming apocalyptic grand poetry, but instead they're about pizza. Once again, Spinal Tap. But once again, they work, and have enough to stand on their own. They're funny, but at the same time not stupid, and fit into the overall mood of the album. As far as influence goes, just look into the tribute CD. Everything from techno to black metal. As rock and roll, it's what rock and roll was always supposed to be: fun and dangerous. Think of Alice Cooper fronting the Ramones, produced by the Village people and you'll get a good idea of what this album is about. Way better than Sgt. pepper's.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best around........2006-03-23

First off I want to say that Bam Margera sucks, is completely and 100% unfunny, and all the crap music he promotes on his MTV reality show sucks almost as hard as him and his "wild" antics. That said Turbonegro should be ashamed to associated with "Bam-Bands" like HIM, CKY, EUROPEAN DEATH METAL, etc... This album is a true classic, every song is near perfect. No weak tracks on the whole thing. The lyrics are great, the solos are fast, and the melodies remind me of punk classics like the ramones and the misfits. It takes the adrenaline and attitude of classic punk rock and mixes it with the virtuosity and solos of 70s classic rock. And the band's silly/funny likeness makes it one of the most fun albums in years. 5/5, outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Best band of our time.......2005-11-07

This is a great introduction to the best band of our time. Turbonegro combines the classic punk style of the clash and the sex pistols with amazing guitar solos by euroboy who could be called the modern day hendrix. This album is without a doubt one of the greatest albums OF ALL TIME!!! and could hold it's own with any of the great classic rock albums. every song is a hit, if you are a rock listener, turbonegro is definately the band to get into... if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Really more about (...)-kicking rock & roll.......2005-05-03

OK, I am going to try this again. I think the content of my last attempt at a review did not go over well with the censors.

My basic thesis is that this is a great (and archetypal) showing from a band that does not appear to have been ready-hatched for your 14-year-old nephew by the great music industry Engine of Mediocrity.

TN comes at you nice and hard with a surprising melodic undertone in there that keeps the music mentally interesting. It's definitely not your emo-wuss bilge that makes you beg the band to please grow up, nor is it the trite distorto-crunch mess with some dude trying to growl like he's actually a tough guy.

This is for those of you who would like to get your (...) kicked but would rather not feel like you are a) still working through your teen angst; b) trying to annoy and/or scare your parents (although this will do plenty of that); or c) trying to escape the taint of your middle-class, hyper-feminized, neo-suburban, gotta-go-to-model-UN-so-I-can-get-into-Harvard, the-losers-at-the-soccer-tournament-should-get-trophies-too, upbringing by listening to "hardcore" music.

Bringing together the who's who of jazz/fusion guitarists with Warren Haynes Steve Morse, Jimmy Herring, Mike Stern, John Abercrombie, Greg Howe, Dave Fiuczynski, Frank Gambale, Jeff Richman, and Steve Lukather, each pay a fiery guitar tribute to one of the most influential fusion guitarists of all time. These amazing compositions are masterfully played by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Kai Eckhardt, Keyboardist Mitch Forman with performances by violinist Jerry Goodman, the latter three of whom are veterans of Mclaughlin's band. This unique CD features some the most incredible fusion guitar solos available anywhere.

Well, there's no John McLaughlin here, but the other guys does the job brilliant. Reccomended!

2 out of 5 stars Mahavishnu Orchestra is a Tough Act to Cover.......2006-06-05

As a Maha fanatic I really wanted to love this CD, but outside of John Abercrombie's take on Follow our Heart, nothing takes flight. Problematic are the arrangements that pay little respect to the original compositions and a rhythm section that plods along with none of the forward leaning urgency and intensity of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. As far as tributes go, The Mahavishnu Project does a much better job of honoring both the spirit and the musical innovations of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing captures the original MO.......2005-11-09

because of their ensemble interaction, full force tempos and jagged solos. This tribute is fun to listen to...all these guitarists are phenomonal players but many of the takes are lock stock and barrel rock solos, slow tempos, or corny arrangements. The highlights are the tunes with Jerry Goodman- an original MO member. He cuts through the music like a knife because its his territory. Especially "Dawn" with Frank Gambale... in Lilas Dance he shines again. Cant stand your funk goes on too long with Stern. Another stand outs are Steve Morse on Cellestial commuters. For the MO fan its a must but makes you appreciate
    the original gang.

    5 out of 5 stars A fusion "tribute" treat.......2005-10-10

I am an old time Mahavishnu fan who has been going back down memory lane and rediscovering the band. Being a purist I NEVER buy tribute albums. I find them unnecessary & unworthy. I stumbled across the listing for this when I was buying the remastered version of Visions of Emeralds Beyond and after seeing that it contained some of my all time favorite players I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I can't stop playing it.
What makes this tribute different? How about the inclusion of orginal band members to back up the guest guitarists! The contributions of the much underrated Mitchel Forman on Keys and the superb Jerry Goodman (often covering what was Ponty material)on violin are outstanding.
What are the highlights...nearly too many to list: Steve Lukather (Toto)shines on "Birds of Fire'. The Mike Stern (Miles Davis & solo work)and Jerry goodman interplay on "can't Stand Your funk" is exceptional. I bought this in part because I am addicted to the Dixie Dregs but found Steve Morse playing a little too clean. (Most of the other players expanded beyond the Mahavishnu parameters but sadly not Morse). Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit & the Other Ones) strikes a nerve on "Meeting of the Spirits". "Jazz" is a nice unexpected inclusion from '84. Frank Gambale's (Vital Information) cover of "Dawn" again with Goodman is lively and memorable. As much as I admire Warren Haynes (Govt Mule/Allman Brothers) I was skeptical of how he might come across on a fusion LP; in truth "Lila's Dance" may be the best cut on the CD. The final wind down comes with John Abercrombie bringing us back to Earth with "Follow your heart" The whole cd is a solid pleasant surprise. If your an old fan give it a try. If you are a new fan listen to this first and then compare it to the original material; you'll be opening the doors to some great fusion.

    4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Tribute CD.......2005-09-02

Too bad that superior listening formats SACD & DVD Audio have not permeated the release market; this multi-layered concept album is begging for 5.1 playback.

That having been said, there are moments on this guest guitarists' (alongside the house band) CD to justify its purchase. In particular, Mike Stern's: Can't Stand Your Funk...Meaning Of The Spirits featuring Jimmy Herring and some mellow Frank Gambale on Dawn.

I would say Visions can be placed alongside Greg Bendian's Mahavishnu Project (Live!) on your shelf.
