Not the original single / chart versions.......2005-06-08

Like I said in the title, these are not the original versions that we all know from the international hitparades. It should have been written on the cover. So it's verrry disapointing! The photo album inside is OK, but I'm gonna sell mine I'm affraid.
I have to look further for the original versions!

Brilliant singer-songwriter.......2005-03-07

Joe South began as a session guitarist, working in both Nashville and Muscle Shoals. He played on many country records but also on records by Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel. He later had a major international hit with Games people play and another major American hit with Walk a mile in my shoes, but may ultimately be better remembered as a writer of hits for others, notably Deep Purple (Hush), Billy Joe Royal (Down in the boondocks), Lynn Anderson (Rose garden), These are not my people (Freddy Weller) and Birds of a feather (Paul Revere and the Raiders) - a truly diverse selection of artists.

Joe's songs often contain very interesting lyrics that generally reflected his own insecurity and frustrations (so obvious in Rose garden, a song in which he clearly indicates that he's not going to live up to other people's expectations). As such, many people found them easy to relate to and that may be the basis of their popularity - listen to Concrete jungle, Clock up on the wall, Children and some of the other songs.

Die-hard fans may not be satisfied, but this compilation contains all the essential Joe South tracks that everybody else expects to find here (his own hits and his original versions of his other famous songs), plus some other great songs that are also worth hearing.

Not The End Of A Rainbow.......2004-08-25

A pity this misses the care South put into his well-crafted albums. Really, he deserves a re-release of some of those, for me, seminal 70s discs. Most poignantly, 'Midnight Rainbows', which I have occasion to pull out of the racks for a spin. This is a marvellous and emotive work, wraked at moments with pain & loss and yet triumphant in the final assessment;crowned with joy & wonder.If it were available it would be 5 stars all the way. I think it's the deep gravity of his voice that takes some attuning to. 'To Have To Hold & Let Go'. & 'God Forgave Me' should absolve any doubts.

I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWERS. I'VE BEEN A JOE SOUTH FAN SINCE 1966. GAMES PEOPLE PLAY WON 12 GRAMMYS. ALONG WITH SOME OF THE OTHER MENTIONED. GREATEST LOVE B.J. THOMAS. DOWN IN THE BOONDOCKS BILLY JOE ROYAL. I KNEW YOU WHEN BILLY JOE ROYAL, SOME OF THE GREATEST LYRICS I'VE EVER HEARD. HIS VOICE CARRIES THE EMOTION THAT HE SEEMS TO FEEL WHEN HE WRITES THEM. ALL MY HARD TIMES WAS DONE BY THE KINGSTON TRIO (ALL MY SOROWS) AND THE TURTLES (ALL MY PROMISES). THE ONLY WRITERS WITH LYRICS ON PAR ARE CAT STEVENS AND ROY ORBISION.

A great album from an overlooked star.......2003-02-12

John Cougar Mellencamp used to do a medley of Joe South's song in his concerts and let a lot of people know what an important performer Joe South was. This album has it all. The hits he wrote for other people (I did not know before I bought this album that South had written Hush, I knew about the other songs but that was a pleasant surprise) and his own hits are here as well.

A performer who touches your sole and put out some tremendous music.

Amazing voice, amazing man.......2007-02-06

This incredibly gifted man has produced some of the best live and recorded vocal performances I have ever heard. I was lucky enough to have worked with him throughout the 1992 production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Australia. Not only was I consistently impressed with his vocal abilities, I also found him to be one of the great gentlemen of the music business. Treat yourself to this CD and discover the voice, the elan and soul that elevate his performances beyond the extraordinary.

The Best Male Singer Alive Today.......2002-01-14

John Farnham is by far the Best Male Singer Alive Today...hands down. Virtually Unknown here in America...he captured many American's "Ears" with his stint with the Little River Band in the 80's. I've seen him referred to as "The Blonde Guy" or "The New Guy"...then he dropped from the American Music Scene. BUY THIS CD...it will not let you down.

Distinctly Farnham.......2001-04-14

No, John Farnham doesn't have the greatest voice in the world - or even in Australia. That title would go to the once-in-a-lifetime, world class voice of another Aussie - Anthony Warlow. Warlow's clear, rich, powerful baritone makes Farnham sound like a wailing Bee Gees reject.

No, John Farnham isn't the most well-known Aussie singer. That would be 70s-80s icon Olivia Newton-John. No one I've ever met in the U.S. has ever heard of Farnham. Newton-John is a household name here.

What Farnham does have is personality, charm, and a distinctive sound. It's not a bad voice, and Farnham uses it wisely and well both on ballads and catchy pop numbers. Even on recording, his irresistable love of performing shines through. More importantly, he is synonymous with Australian pop culture - as much a part of the country's flavor as kangaroos and g'days.

It's not on the soundtrack CD!
Buy this instead - it is definitive Stones at their best and of course features Gimme Shelter, one of their all time greats - yet underestimated!
