Who Killed The Grape?.......2007-07-23

The much melinged and exhustively chronicled story behind Moby Grape goes something like this. The genius A&R team at Columbia Records signed MB in the summer of 1966. Thinking that they had the next Jefferson Airplane on their hands, they set out to launch their new find with a unique and untried promotion. Instead of selecting one or possibly two singles to release, they choose instead to release all 12 tracks as singles. This unfocused and confusing marketing stratgey led to little or virtually no air play on top-forty radio and mired the band for what could have been a huge initial launch.

The follow-up album "Wow" contained fewer songs that could have found their way into a top-forty format and some quirky gimmicks, like the "Gene Autry" track and the "Grape Jam" bonus Lp. But even these could not save Wow from mideocore sales and little or no air-play. So how valid is the theory that the Columbia Record Execs killed Grape or is there more to the story? I'm not so sure if it was a case of poor marketing or simply a band that couldn't produce a pure "radio-friendly". three minute, danceable, humable and not-so-forgettable single.

Even after repeated listenings, I can't help but think that "Listen My Friends" contains some beautiful songs by a band that could not be viewed as short on "chops". No way, these guys could hold their own with most any band of their day, But was the song writing first rate? Could they stack up against The Airplane, The Doors, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or The Who? I'll have to agree with other reviewers who have called them "second tier". Afterall what's so bad about being considered in the same breath as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, Santana, The Blues Project, Electric Flag, The James Gang, Blood Sweat & Tears, Love and so many other fine bands of the golden era of classic rock.

Reading these overblown hyped up reviews was truly a treat!!To much acid i suspect,especially S.king.The claim that they had better '5 part' harmony then the BEACH BOYS is especially ridiculous and also the claim that J.Spence was a top 5 best guitarist makes me cringe ,just listen to his vibrato and string bending and you'll hear the same amatuerish uncontrolled drivel that many lower tiered guitarist displayed in that era.I know this soundS like just a bashing session but it is not,it's just reality., the music on this disc is very good for what it is a SAN FRANCISCO TYPE MUSIC BAND, NO BETTER NO WORSE THAN THE OTHERS FROM THAT AREA AND TIME!

On Your Way To Ooh Mama Ooh Omaha!!!!!.......2007-07-09

Where exactly do you place Moby Grape in the strata of American pop music circa 1966-69? I can't honestly place them in the upper echelon with the likes of The Byrds, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, Hendrix and the Doors. But certainly they do belong smack-dab in the middle of the second tier, with The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Mamas & Pappas, Santana, Steve Miller Band and of course Love, the other great Bay area band that never had a top-40 hit.

With that said "Listen My Friends" will provide you with your 20 song fix of MG. Actually there's only 19 tacks. The last cut is a throw-away radio ad. I wasn't a huge fan back then. But I did have the first two Lp's and the Grape Jam Lp, an interesting jam session with Mike Bloomfield & Al Kooper. This new collection has sure found a home in my car. Listening to it has gotten me back into a Ooh Mama Ooh!!!Grape Moby solid groove ....Or maybe its that Murderous vendetta for The Judge that keeps you comming back for another look at Motorcycle Ireane?....What ever your taste in Grape Jam, Listen My Friends is vintage and ripe. Pop a grape into your mouth right now. Close your eyes and you'll be on your way to Omaha....Ooh Mama Ooh...Omaha!!!!Enjoy.

Reviewing the group rather than the record.......2007-06-12

A new record is out, and I want to know if it is good. I already know the previous work of Moby Grape and I do not need Sam King telling me how good the group is. He is right but redundant. I want to know if there is anaything new on the record that I have not got or heard. From reading the 8 reviewers, I see no mention of any new material. I assume that everything on the record is recycled from the original releases and several previous compilations. A proper review might then begin with: "why does anyone need this. The second hand stores have copies of the previous compilations." The next issue is why the record company did not release something new, like the Amsterdam concert. Should record companies be rewarded when they have such conservative release policies. Why buy these songs again? Foolish, right.

Doesn't Live Up to the Hype.......2007-06-09

Moby Grape is absolutely the most over-rated group to emerge from the late sixties. What little appeal they might have had is mitigated by the ridiculous claims of their followers, i.e. "better first album than the Beatle, Byrds, Stones, Airplane et al". At best, this is a highly debatable claim. At worst, it's a complete falsehood (my view).

Spence's work on the first two Airplane albums is better than his work with the Grape thanks to the far superior vocals of Marty Balin/Signe Anderson/Grace Slick and the intiguing guitar interplay provided by Casady, Kantner and Kaukonen.

I've tried to get into the Grape, several times. But the hype is such a turn off. Particularly when the group fails miserably to live up to it.

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

not funny.......2007-07-25

I'd heard such rave reviews about this musical, but kept passing on chances to see it. I was turned off by the title -- and this is strange for me, a person not afraid of scatological humor. But maybe I knew something I could not say.

The funniest thing about the musical, I am now convinced, is the premise. Urinetown is a place where you have to pay to pee. A conglomerate has taken over all toilet facilities, and if you don't pay, you don't pee -- unless you go into the bushes, and risk getting arrested.

But it's just not funny. It's supposed to be a satire, but it just doesn't work. Why? I don't know. But I listened to many songs on the CD, and none of them had that true spark that makes you want to laugh. The opening number is "Too Much Exposition" making fun of musicals that open by explaining too much with words instead of action. And perhaps this song is in there to deflect criticism for the main reason this musical doesn't work -- it's too busy explaining, instead of getting on with the business of being funny.

My humor tastes: I watch the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook (so-so), Frasier reruns. Never watched Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Family Guy, but did watch Seinfeld (although it's not funny to me anymore). The two most recent things I saw that made me laugh out loud were 1) Larry Wilmore doing his n*gg*r skit on Daily Show and 2)an early Chappelle episode where Sesame Street characters talk about drug use

An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

George Michael's second post-Wham! outing, Listen Without Prejudice could not have been more appropriately titled. Following on the booty-shakin' heels of Faith, Listen found Michael being more serious than sassy. "Freedom 90" had a strong groove, a catchy melody, and of course, the sex-bomb video. The contemplative tone of the album is best illustrated by the other hit that it spawned, "Praying for Time." Michael's voice was as strong as ever, and he did indeed take several risks on the CD. "They Won't Go When I Go," (not a Michael composition) was almost cryptic, and "Cowboys and Angels" was a lament of a different kind. --Steve Gdula

Beyond what anyone would think possible........2006-12-26

After years of owning this album and never taking the time to really listen to it (due in no doubt to the stupid media problems and George's absense from the vids and the vids absense from Mtv) I rebought this on cd and after a listen straight through I came to several conclusions. A. YES, this cd needs desperately to be remastered as it sounds so sonically dead and harmonically hollow. B. This has without a doubt got to be one of the most underrated albums of the past 20 years. and C. George Michael is also one of our generation's most talented, honest and gifted singer/songwriter/producers in the history of modern pop music. Whereas we've all heard Freedom 90' and Praying for time (pure brilliance) it's the little gems on this disc that blow your socks off. "Heal the pain" is a gorgeous acoustic guitar driven song with a chorus that sticks in your head like peanut butter, "Soul Free" and "Mother's pride" are beautiful in execution and production. BUT the truest gem on this disc is the last track "Waiting (Reprise)". Two minutes and twenty seconds of pure, unguarded emotion. If this song doesn't give you goosebumps your emotionally dead. The vocals, lyrics and sparse arrangement make this tiny, short song HUGE and powerful. This little slice of musical heaven was just a precursor to the forthcoming honesty and emotional depths George was on his way to mining on all his subsequent material. Less is more, and in this case..... less was more than plenty. This song will go down in my books as one of the greatest, PUREST songs ever committed to vinyl. No wonder he opens all his shows with it. When he sings "HERE I AM!" you can't help but think "YES! And thank god for that!".

The best George Michael album - ever!.......2006-11-29

Hmmm... if it is 2006 and you are reading this review because you are considering buying this CD, all I can ask is who are you? I cannot believe that anyone who likes George Michael would not already own this CD, seeing as it has been out for over 16 years.

That said, this is one of my favorite CDs; definitely in my Top 10. This is actually the first CD that I found a way to "wear out" and had to buy a second copy (basically, repeated plays throughout the years resulted in the disc getting scratched, dinged and skipping during playback). This CD is consistent from start to finish, without a weak song. It is also a much better album than "Faith" and holds up better over repeated listens.

This CD was underrated back in 1990, basically because of its somewhat somber tone, and because it did not have as many radio-friendly tracks as "Faith". In fact, outside of "Freedom '90", it has no "radio friendly" material on it. However, this CD is a consistently rewarding listen. It is somber without being gloomy. It retains George Michael's brand of pop music, and his unique sound, without being "commercial". This was certainly not another "Faith" and in fact the only song from "Faith" that might sound at home on this release would be "Hand to Mouth". Otherwise, the album is a definite departure (albeit a very positive departure) for George.

Considering the time when this thing came out (i.e. the year of "Ice Ice Baby", "U Can't Touch This" and "Cherry Pie") this album was actually ahead of its time. It is one of the few releases from 1990 (along with Depeche Mode's "Violator") that have aged well.

My only complaint is that this CD (along with the rest of George's solo and Wham! output) is in dire need of remastering. As with most releases of the time, the CD sounds hollow (i.e. not deep enough bass, too much treble, very "tinny" sounding). There is a warmth and depth to these songs that only a good remastering job could really bring out. Considering George has patched up his relationship with Sony, and considering other than his back catalogue, George doesn't have much else to offer these days, I am surprised that this (and his other releases) have not yet been remastered.

That said, if you are considering buying this (again, where have you been the past 16 years?) you won't be disappointed.

Probably his best album ever...........2006-10-21

George Michael shows a realy maturity and mastery of lyrics on this album.
From the poignant opening track when he saings of " he cant come back because there's no one to come back for" to the very sad but timely song
about the young man who dies just like his father; a hero in a war.
This albumevokes pure, honest and raw emotion.
George Michael's best album ever, in my opinion.

The Album Title Couldn't Make More Sense!.......2006-01-26

"Listen Without Prejudice" was George Michaels second solo album after disbanding Wham!. His first one "Faith" had been a catchy soul influenced pop album that had taken off where Wham left, but his second album was diffrent. It was a far more moody album with slow paced songs that often were more personal, socially concious and religious then ever before. The album managed to sell over 1 million copies but it was still not regarded as a "hit". Many old fans were dissapointed at the way George had frastically changed his music in the matter of only a few years. However, There were a plan to make a "Listen Without Prejudice PART 2" that was going to be more cathcy with uptempo songs, but cause of his legal battle with Columbia, it was never released, One song in particular "Too Funky" was later used for HIV/AIDS charities and became a hit single.

Listen Without Prejudice is a exellent title for a more mature album then ever before and the album itself is indeed underrated. "Praying for Time" is a socially concious ballad about the injustice in the world, the songs peaked at #6 in the UK and then reached #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. It's lyrics are very good too. "And it's hard to love, There's so much to hate, Hanging on to hope, When there is no hope to speak of, and the wounded skies above ,say it's much too late, Well maybe we should all be Praying for time"

"Freedom" was one of a few uptempo songs on this album, it was also a major hit and hit #8 in the US. The song is refering to George's past success with Wham but also showes a new side of himelf as a new man, who is more cynical about the music business then he had been before. Not so strange considering his legal battles with Columbia either. George refused to appear in the video and let a bunch of sexy supermodels appear instead. It got heavy MTV play anyway, perhaps cause of his lyrics "Got a brand new face, for the boys on MTV"

"They Won't Go When I Go" was a Stevie Wonder song, it's also a very slow paced ballad. "Something to Save" a guitar song, is simular to the opener, both lyrically and the way it's performed. While it wasn't a typical hit single it's a strong number nonetheless. "Cowboys and Angels" shows a brand new site of Michael, it's a jazz number. "Waiting for that Day" is a decent midtempo guitar song, it grows with time and has become one of my favorites here. "Mother's Pride" is a emotional piano balled that sums up this album perfectly. "Heal the Pain" is a midtempo that got those Afro-Latin feeling with it's drums. "Soul Free" is exellent, it's one of two uptempo's here, when I listen to it reminds me of a mix of soul, pop and caribean music. The last song "Waiting" is a slow paced guitar ballad.

Overall, A very diffrent album compared to the catchy uptempo of "Faith" but it didn't neccesary mean something bad. George Michael proved that he could really make great music "with a brand new face", some fans may have abandoned him but "Listen Without Prejudice" stands as a 90's classic full of intelligent songs in a mostly very slow pace.

ONE OF THE BEST ADULT POP ALBUMS OF THE 90'S .......2006-01-11

There is no dought that George Michael is an excelent performer and songwriter. Although he continues to write wonderfull songs, I believe that his best period was from 1984 'till 1991. Through those years he wrote and performed uncountable major hits which at the same time were top quality pop songs (and I am not talking about Madonna style disguisting pop songs). The "Listen without Prejudice" album was released after the huge success of the "FAITH" album which sold more than 20 million copies worldwide (and its still selling!!). For the "Listen without Prejudice" album that was a unfortunate fact. I mean that "FAITH" was definitely a much more mature album than the Wham ones but it sold tremendousely to the teen audience because of songs like "FAITH", "Father figure" and others. After that success the fans expected that the second solo album of Michael will follow the trails of "FAITH" (from the saling point of view that would've been a good move). But George Michael suprised them all by releasing "Listen without Prejudice" which can be easily characterized as an adult pop album. The maturity of the album is obvious in its entirity. The lyrics are in fact poems and the musical arrangements are in their majority acoustic. Songs like "Praying for time", "They wont when I go" and "Mothers Pride" are a critical statement against the leaders of this world which choose to spend money on wars instead of helping the poor. Songs like "Freedom", "Something to say","Heal the pain", "Cowboys and Angels" , "Soul free" and "Waiting for that day" are probably inspired by Michaels own experiences. I believe that every song in this album is a diamond. This is not an easy task since 99% of the albums released have the most two or three good songs. That is why I believe that "Listen without Prejudice" is the peak of George Michaels career. This album is a classic and definitely ahead of its time. A must have for everyone who listens pop/rock music.

Gorgeous voice, beautiful record.......2007-07-09

What a wonderful album! The songs are superb, and Nancy's voice is as good as it gets here. Her ability to express the lyric, and set a mood is top notch. The title song is pure bliss-a Broadway style, soaring show-stopper that has a heartfelt lyric and near-perfect vocal. I'm a big fan of Nancy's emotional, tender approach, and the control she uses over that big voice, making it sweet and small in all the right places. My great regret is that I never got to see her perform live. During her busy years, 1985-94 I myself was a full-time working singer (professional name Lynn Randall), and I was in Atlantic City at the same time as she was several times-singing 6 days a week left no time to catch her act-what a shame for me. I sing "Listen To My Heart" myself, and tell Nancy's story when I do.

If you have not heard the voice of Nancy LaMott, you really must treat yourself to one of her six CDs. She died in 1995 at the age of 43 and for a number of years her recordings were out of print and were not available.. However, there is a dealer in California who is a genius at finding really hard to find music and he managed to get five of her CDs and one tape for me . Since at last they are available (thanks to years of effort by those who worked with her)I was able to get the one I had on tape and 'Listen To My Heart' for a friend.
Her story is not as sad as it sounds as she accomplished more toward her life long dream in those 43 years than you could imagine. Go on line and read about her amazing life. And then buy some of her music and know how good life can be.

Discovering Nancy.......2006-03-26

Today Nancy LaMott was a passenger in my car singing to me as I drove on the New York parkways for an hour. A delightful way via this CD to really "listen to her heart" as it touched mine. Very few of us who love pop songs of yesterday knew Nancy. I discovered her from the broadcasts of Jonathan Schwartz, who played her records often on his weekend radio shows. He claims, and I agree, that she is one of the very best songstresses of the 20th Century. What a pity she died so tragically (but heroically) while yet so young.

Okay, listen to what I have to say and take it with a grain of salt. I was alive and kickin' when I bought the Beatle's White Album. 'Nuff said. I am not touting myself as the great musical critic guru just because I'm older than dirt; however, this album does have some highly emotional and relevant songs for those of us who are leaving a phase and/or relationship in our lives to move onto another plane. There is much more to just listening appeal or popularity of lyrics in an album. Sometimes there is something that touches you personally and you realize this album will help you process another challenge life throws your way.

Why this album? I am leaving my husband in order to strike out on my own and follow what my heart has been telling me is the right thing to do for several years. Complete honesty: I only really listened to this song for the first time tonight in a local pub that had on VH-1. The words were relevant, tremendously healing, and allowed me to have perspective on the path I have chosen to follow. Okay, now you can bash the comments made by some old broad .... LOL!!!

Gorgeous Music.......2006-07-05

I wound up getting this album because of the song Listen To Your Heart, and wound up falling in love with it for the other songs. A wonderful mix of techno and ballads. While the remake of Roxette's classic is just a great song to get up and dance to, I'm more prone to listening to the slower songs- "I Miss You," which almost makes me want to cry when I hear it. The music and the voice of Edmee, sorry if that is misspelled, are just wonderful. If one doesn't like the words, then they might love the music to it. It makes it a great dance track while still being heart wrenching like some of my favorite ballads.

At Seventeen, probably my least favorite track on the album, is still a great song to listen to. Especially if you like older sounding songs. I realize that it is a cover as well, but it's not as well done as Listen to Your Heart. Fortunately, the other songs make up for it in my opinion.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked D.H.T.
Eventhough, they remade quite a few of the songs, I enjoyed their remake just as much or better than the originals. If you like synthesized music and a dance beat then this music might be something you might be interested in checking out.

One hit wonder, well remake one hit wonder........2006-04-20

Listen To Your Heart is a good song, when i first heard it I thought it was accoustic version of Roxette. Then later I found out it was some people called DHT. What the hell does DHT stand for anyway and what kind of name is Edmee? Furthurmore, how did they get such airplay out of this song and then release such a horrible CD? Far as I know it didnt even crack the top 1000. These songs sound like their lost from the 80's and the ballads put you to sleep. Let's face it, this band was doomed to start with. They don't have a snowballs chance in hell, goodnight and goodbye!

Sit Down And Enjoy 3 New Tracks and Performance Versions.......2006-05-23

Really liked this album, the new tracks and my old favorites in a naked, simpler or more unfinished version of tunes I like. I started with Hooverphonic's first album in '97 or so, but in the last few months, remembered and looked for more, this was one of the last, and More Sweet Music/No More Sweet Music, and I liked this better than the other two. 2Wicky, the other CDs are complex mixes of sounds, rich, while this is not typical of what came before or since. Recommend this CD. My favorite of other releases is "The Magnificent Tree", I believe is the best, "A Stereo Sound Spectacular", "Blue Wonder Power Milk", "...Presents Jackie Cane" and the two mix/discs "Sweet" and "No More Sweet" - can hear a progression, I'll buy more but they seem to be waning. I like New, complex, fun, much is dark when you listen to/read the words. Other stuff I like, Garbage, Poe (2 cds), The Crystal Method, and Classics like Pink Floyd, Jimi, jazz & blues, a lot of Frank Zappa's music. I buy what I like and want to hear more of, but do buy blind based on cover art, recommendations of friends. Hooverphonic moves me most when the music sends chills up my spine or makes me want to cry. Frosted Flake Wood is my favorite on this CD and Tree.

Great introduction to this band, nice mellow date music.......2006-03-22

This is my first Hooverphonic album; others' recommendations were spot on, the acoustic ensemble arrangements of their songs on this disc give the album a very coherent and mellow mood. Favorites include "Jackie Cane," "Antarctica," "Someone," "2 Wicky." If you're a big fan of their studio recordings, or the stuff you've heard licensed for car and cell phone ads, you might be taken aback - these performances are as if the band stepped into a smoky nightclub and played with Kurt Weill's backup string quartet. Recording quality is crisp and the sound presence on my hi-fi is great. I broke my Sony boycott for this one, and I don't feel a tinge of guilt.

Could it Be?.......2005-05-09

Could it be that this, their fifth CD, far from being a rehash of their earlier releases, is the most accomplished, rich and satisfying of all their efforts? YES!

Though I love all their CDS, each one contain a few tracks that are throw-aways, too similar in melody and production to the other songs on the same CD. NOT SO WITH "Sit Down and Listen To: The Live Theatre Recordings."

It's title a line from the tune, "Lullaby of Broadway," this disc plays like Hooverphonic Unplugged meets 1960's French Cinema Soundtracks to produce one hell of a super chilled jazz-vocal menu on half the songs, and Edith Piaf meets Dusty Springfield to serve up smoldering torch songs on the rest!

ALL the best songs from "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular," "The Magnificent Tree" and "Jackie Cane" are represented here; the only mar being the short shrift given "Blue Wonder Power Milk," arguably Hooverphonic's best CD before "Sit Down." After hearing these haunting reworkings, I longed to hear "Magenta" in a similar vein.

The best of these rearrangements is "2Wicky," from their debut, in which Geike Arnaert kindles the tension in this song with a staccatto phrasing that eventually breaks into an all-consuming, feverish singing! Running a close second is "Sometimes" from their fourth release, a stripped-down, peppier version that mines the essential sunniness is this previously snowy song. Finally, "Vinegar & Salt" from "Magnificent Tree," turns a saucy song into a dirge delivery of chilling proportions, building into a bonfire of a eulogy!

All is not brilliant retread, however. Two previously unreleased tracks, "My Autumn's Done Come" and "The Last Thing I Need Is You" buttress an already rock-solid album. Shockingly, "The Last Thing" could be an Alanis Morrissette song, with it's frank lyrics and get-back attitude! But it's still essentially Hooverphonic -quirky lyrics, odd time-signatures and minor-key melodies. If this is the sign of things to come, this spunky triphop, then I will be sitting down and listening for a long time to come!

Great Crossover!!.......2004-11-10

Hooverphonic leaves aside their electronic-trip hop-drum & bass style and plays excellent jazzy-chillout versions of their most famous songs. Ideal to relax or.......

my fault! After reading reviews, was excited to purchase this cd...mistake realized immediately into first song! however...because i did buy this cd, and it was now my mess, i decided, financially, i best hear it all the way through...it didn't get any better, in fact, worsened...this band's sound is so appallingly dull and lackluster, they should be the crowned heads of anti-music...very much akin to herman's hermits meets peter, paul and mary, but worse! for the time...cool name, bad band...i will pick this cd up by two little fingers just once more, long enough to read description for re-selling, rather unloading it on another unsuspecting buyer... it's a small wonder why most people never heard of these clowns...i know i've taken what turned out to be my first and only ride on this merry-go-round...now exiting the park!

Emitt Rhodes shines early in career.......2006-11-12

It is so easy to be disappointed when tracking down a singer or group but "Listen, Listen: The Definitive Collection" delivers big time! File under Emitt Rhodes and truly appreciate the genius of the man who is one of the "great unsung talents" of the past 40 years (you can put Dwight Twilley right alongside him). I came to this compilation through the Emitt Rhodes solo albums on Dunhill, and didn't know what to expect. After all, The Merry-Go-Round featured a teenage Emitt early in his career. Apart from the catchy minor 1967 hit "Live" (covered note-for-note nearly twenty years later by The Bangles), what else did he have to offer? The answer is - plenty. Uncharacteristically for an album from a new group at the time, A&M allowed The Merry-Go-Round to record entirely original material! And Emitt wrote ten of the twelve tracks from their self-titled album, sharing co-writing credit on another. The album is included in its entirely in this collection. And the good news - no the great news - is the songs are consistently strong. And they grow on you with each playing. In addition, "The Definitive Collection" has all the tracks off Emitt's last album for A&M "The American Dream" (recorded before he made the move to Dunhill and his self-titled 1970 "Emitt Rhodes" masterwork). Also included are additional singles from The Merry-Go-Round - standouts like "Listen, Listen" and "She Laughed Loud". In fact, the whole package is so strong (yes, there are one or two less successful tracks) that it leaves you thinking about how music history might have played out differently.

WOW! What a great band!! Too bad there isnt any sound clips of this album but trust me it is AMAZING!! This will make any 1960's Brit Pop Fan Smile, What an undiscovered Gem of a band. The Merry Go-Round are from California and where led by a young lead singer who was very gifted with melody,he does channel Meet The Beatles Era McCartney, which is definitly a good thing. I always thought The BEatles where the only band who could play like this. I was wrong. it is really really great, easily one of my fave 60's bands beides The Beatles and The Kinks. These guys are 100 times better than comtemporaries like Hermans Hermits, and Dare I Say it The Byrds? I did, just better song writing that ages better, Sorry to Any Byrds fans out there.

A Happy Accident for me: The Merry-Go-Round!.......2006-07-15

I discovered this band totally by accident either while surfing here at amazon or on allmusic.com. I had never heard of them.
Not a word. Then I read the review on allmusic and heard the 30 second samples.
Amazing! How did this get ignored back in 1967 or 1968?
It's very very good. Very Beatle-esque but not in a bad way.
It's also a tad folky or Byrds-ish which is a plus!

Emmitt Rhodes was born in Hawthorne, CA according to allmusic.com. While I've heard British groups sound American this is the most British I've ever heard an American Group sound.

Track 2 features backwards and sped up guitars. Track 12 features fuzzed out guitars.
Remember that Utopia album, Deface The Music? It was Todd Rundgren doing the Beatles.
Remember the Rutles and how Beatles-like they sounded?

This band beats both of them hands down. Of course they have an advantage. They're not writing pun-filled opposite titled tracks like Utopia and the Rutles did.

I hear elements of folk: think Peter, Paul and Mary but in a real good way. There's California Pop: imagine the best Mamas and Papas tracks but just the guys on vocals.

The first 12 tracks represent the one album The Merry-Go-Round recorded. The next batch is an Emmitt Rhodes solo album with session men.
The tone of the music changes from the Beatle-esque pop to a collage of styles but Mr. Rhodes song writing is very solid.
Track 14 reminds me of Eric Carmen. Track 18 starts out like a lost Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds a-side.

Tracks 26-29 are from Merry-Go Round singles and "Listen, Listen" really rocks out. The guitars really ring loud. I love this song.

As a hidden bonus during track 29 the band starts doing "California Girls" [not Good Vibrations] with Herb Alpert on trumpet at 2:35 in.

None of this is bad.
You will listen to this over and over. It's a repeat disc.
A rare find these days.

Complete collection of '60s Brit-influenced baroque-folk-rock.......2005-12-22

Rev-Ola's 29-track collection pulls together everything that was released by this Southern California band, along with the solo LP that group leader Emitt Rhodes waxed before heading off to record for Dunhill. This includes the whole of the band's eponymous 1967 LP (tracks 1-12), the 1971 Emitt Rhodes LP "The American Dream" (tracks 13-24), and five A- and B-sides from singles. For good measure, the CD includes a bonus track of the band playing the Beach Boys' "California Girls" with their A&M label head Herb Alpert on trumpet.

The debut album shows the band to have merged its West Coast background (Palace Guard, Leaves, Grass Roots) with a substantial British Invasion influence (Beatles, Badfinger, Zombies). There's also a helping of the ornate baroque-rock brought to the charts by Michael Brown and the Left Banke. These influences stayed with Rhodes as the band members peeled off and left him to record solo sides with session players from the Wrecking Crew. Unsurprisingly, the later sides show influence of later Beatles work - particularly the Magical Mystery Tour era Paul McCartney.

The Merry Go Round's album is superb, from the well-known "Live" (covered popularly by The Bangles) and the brilliantly produced follow-up "Time Will Show the Wiser" (covered by Fairport Convention on their own debut) to the minor-key "You're a Very Lovely Woman" (covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1971). Rhodes' songs were more than good enough to garner covers by other artists, they convinced his label to let he and the band write their entire debut album. His writing became increasingly sophisticated as he recorded his contractual obligation follow-up for A&M, and though the session players give the album a less organic quality, their playing is top-notch. This is a must-have for Emitt Rhodes fans, as well as anyone who loves late-60s/early-70s West Coast pop-rock. [2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

The Puerto Rican pianist/bandleader Eddie Palmieri has reigned as "The Sun of Latin Music" for fifty years. Big Full Latin Jazz Sound.......2006-10-15

A quick sampling of the openning track 'In Flight' and you will be hooked. If you are still on the fence about buying this album try the title cut 'Listen Here'. If these two tunes alone do not have you purchasing the album you may have a hole in your soul. This album swings and is great from front to back. Big latin jazz sound with excellent percussions, swinging horn arrangements and Eddie's pianio bring it all together and driving it forward. There is a reason why the man has won seven GRAMMY's. I love this album. If you like jazz or just music with a beat you will not be disappointed.

Fabulous Latin Jazz.......2006-03-26

This is my favorite Latin Jazz album to date. It is true that this is not the typical tropical big band sound. However, if you like variety (the first track includes jazz violin) and sheer musical talent, you should at least listen to the album samples.

With "Listen Here" the "latin monk" Eddie Palmieri explores his jazzier roots with guests soloists and his excellent working band with great sucess. It's fun and upbeat[like Eddie] but it is NOT big band latin jazz. For that turn to Eddie's cd's "La Perfecta" and "Obra Maestra". This cd has more of a small unit jazz flavor with several jazz standards[Monk,Silver] and Eddie originals. Frankly to my ears the originals work better.Regina Carter[violin] burns on "In Flight" and sax player Michael Brecker[who is very ill by the way] cooks on "Listen Here". Listen Here seems to work best with the pared down units in the several formats presented here. Eddie's percussive Monk-like piano playing is particually interesting on La Gitano with great subtle accoustic guitar work by John Scofield. Fans of Eddie's big band latin jazz may be dissapointed or suprised[I was pleasently] but this is Eddie reaching and stretching his art. I hope he cotinues to evolve. Heck he's only 68 years old! Reccommended.

Album Description

The Grammy-Award winning band's 1983 album finally makes its compact disc debut in the United States. A Billboard Top 20 album, Listen features four hit singles: "Wishing (I Had a Photograph of You)", "Nightmares", "Transfer Affection", and "(It's Not Me) Talking". Three bonus tracks have been added, including the 80s alternative radio classic, "Committed". All songs are newly digitally remastered and the booklet contains complete lyrics for the first time. Furthermore, journalist Stephen "Spaz" Schnee has compiled new liner notes based on a 2004 interview with Mike and Ali Score.

Missing Key Tracks.......2006-08-14

The reissue of A Flock Of Seagulls brilliant second album "Listen" disappoints for a number of reasons. First, why has the album never included the beautiful 9:38 version of "Wishing" that was released as a 12 inch single in the UK? Even the US promo EP has a 6:05 version that has the same gorgeous intro as the UK 12 inch. (The US album version clocks in at 5:30, this has been the version issued ad nauseum, except for the seriously truncated 3:58 US 45 version). Second, where are "Rosenmontag" and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin"? I have a former edition of the CD, released in 1992 by Beehive Trading Limited (perhaps UK?) which has these two tracks, as well as "Quicksand", but no "Committed", which I only have on the aforementioned US EP and UK 12 inch. Buy this disc for what's here; the rating is for the "business" end of things, not for the fantastic music.

All right, I'll admit, maybe this band from Liverpool, England, took themselves just a little too seriously in 1983, what with the silly hairstyles and odd fashion sense. Maybe they let the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental in 1982 go to their hair-do's. And maybe my 4-Star rating might be just a bit inflated, being that I've been an undying fan of AFOS since their first record, which is still today one of my all-time favorite albums. But cast all that aside, and you'll find that this is a darn good album, difficult as that may be for the casual listener to believe. While "Listen" departs from the harder-edged sound of the debut LP, it does find its own groove within a somewhat softer and more techno-fied atmosphere. Don't get me wrong; a few songs still rock pretty good, highlighting the work by amazing lead guitarist Paul Reynolds. But for the most part, the in-your-face guitar licks of the first album are relegated to the middle-ground, or background completely, while the drums and keyboards are pushed forward (could it be that the Score brothers; singer and keyboardist Mike, and drummer Ali, wanted their handiwork to overshadow that of Reynolds and bassist Frank Maudsley? Who knows.). In general, the formula works, in the context of the album as a whole. "Wishing" is brilliant, except for the annoying "buzz" sound heard on every single drum beat of the song (too bad that wasn't eliminated for the remastered release). "Nightmares" reminds one of how it felt to be eight years old and alone in the dark. "Transfer Affection" is a lovely ballad, found also on the Flock's "Best Of" CDs. "What Am I Supposed To Do?" is a fast-tempo tune, but does evoke sadness from the listener, as the song is about a painful breakup. "Electrics", "The Traveler", "Over The Border" and "It's Not Me Talking" are all New Wave-Rock oriented, while "2:30" seems to be really not much of anything; just synth effects that open with what sounds like an earthquake. Only "The Fall" causes me to hit the skip button. It's not all that bad, just a bit too slow and a bit too monotonous, even for the `Gulls. Two of the three bonus tracks are worth the price of the disc alone. The grunge-like "Quicksand" could have been a rock-radio favorite, had the group used it as a single instead of a b-side. It still stands up as one of the Flock's very best rock songs. And the live version of "I Ran" (the b-side of "It's Not Me Talking", at least in the U.S.) manages to capture the raw energy of the original studio recording. For some reason, there are two songs from the original CD and cassette releases that are missing from this reissue; "Rosenmontag" and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin." Both were weird techno-flavored instrumentals, which tells me that AFOS, along with other British synth-rock bands and artists (like Gary Numan), were musical visionaries rather than One Hit Wonders. So if you're reading this you must be thinking about buying the CD. Do it, and also what the title suggests.

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!.......2005-02-15

In the year 1983, we were introduced to (among other things)both Listen by A Flock of Seagulls AND the CD. So why it took 22 years for Listen to come out on CD (and why we were stuck with nothing but 'best hits' albums by A Flock on CD during this time)is quite beyond my comprehension. But as they say, better late than never. Now I have to agree that it would have been FAR better to include the omitted songs than get another version of I Ran (like you can't find this song in enough places already). But I guess we just have to take what we can get. And an actual CD beats scratchy old vinyl (or a CD-R made from scratchy old vinyl) ANY DAY. If you like A Flock Of Seagulls, or if you just like New Wave in general (Admit it, you do. After all, you entered A Flock Of Seagulls as a search parameter. And Deftones and Linkin Park fans don't do this!), this CD is a must-have. Give your turntable a rest and hear this album WITHOUT the pops and scratches!

Their best........2004-11-18

Oh my gosh! Am I dreaming? This can't be! Just as I was fixing to leave the record/electronics last week after being there for 2-3 hours, it suddenly occurred to me that I almost forgot to check the bin for my favorite band of all time, A Flock of Seagulls. And, lo and behold, what do I find but a CD reissue (!) of 1983's "Listen", as well as a copy of "Platinum and Gold". I couldn't help but get 'em both!

In fact, I still have their first 3 TAPES--their self-titled debut, "Listen", and "The Story of a Young Heart". I think most AFOS fans would agree that "Listen" was the best of their 4 records. (The 4th album was "Dream Come True", apparently a really bad one.) They sound more mature on it with better songwriting, whether it's the dance groove of "Over the Border", the techno-punk fun of "Electrics", the dreamy vocal of "Nightmares", or the adventurous "Traveller". Flock's sound was/is so unique that one should admit that no one has sounded like them since. A song like "Wishing", with it's clashing synth/guitar/bass chords, still sounds rather exotic 20 years onward. You just don't hear such originality nowadays.

Speaking of tapes, the outside of my original tape of "Listen" says it contains 3 extra songs, "Rosenmontag", "Quicksand", and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin". However, they're not on the tape itself. I have the Jive/RCA version, maybe that's why. The other tapes say Jive/Arista. Anybody know what gives? Of the 3, "Quicksand" is featured on this reissue and is actually one of their 'heavier' moments with the deepest groove of any AFOS song.

I am in agreement about the missing tracks "Last Flight of..." and "Rosemantag". Those were two hellaciously alternative songs, given the time of its original release. I will miss them.

I have waited many years to hear this CD again. I originally had the cassette when first released, but after taking that damn cassette everywhere I went for many years, it faded with the scenery. I have looked for the CD version on ebay and every so often one can find one going for $80 out of some remote village half way around the globe. Now that it is rereleased and two very important tracks were omitted I will still wait for that day I can get the original CD on ebay for $50.

The song Committed was a treat for me since I only had a sound snippet memorized in my head from the one time I had heard the song back in 83. Thanks for the memories.

Anyway, get this CD. It, in my humble opinion, is a work of art. The songs are strong and good. THe Production is very much unique for the time, the reverb fills up your speakers and gives an unmistakeable sense of place while you 'listen'. I wish they would have graced the bottom end of the sound spectrum a bit on the remaster, but then it wouldn't true to how Mike Howlett produced it. I guess I can just use my stereo's EQ.

Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."
