3 out of 5 stars Unimpressed.......2007-07-20

I guess Juice Newton really isn't my thing. I remembered her from the 80s on the radio with a few notable hits. They're here: Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me, It's a Heartache, Playing with the Queen of Hearts. But the rest of the album is better left in the 80s. It's a mix of pop/country with lite rock. The whole thing has kind of a lite FM feel. Maybe Juice was just more of a woman's singer. This album is O.K., but nothing I really look forward to hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2007-03-09

Juice Newton is one of the best counry-pop singers of all times. A great energetic voice and some real unforgettable songs.
My personal favourites include the beautiful Angel Of The Morning, the rollicking Queen of Hearts and the strong and sorrowful It's A Heartache
After all these years, her work is unforgettable, catchy and full of energy and vibe.

4 out of 5 stars Juice's Greatest.......2007-01-27

I saw Juice Newton in concert way back when Angel of the Morning first came out and I was blown away by the purity of her voice. I remember it gave me goosebumps. So I was browsing through Amazon and came across this greatest hits cd and figured it was time to update the handful of vinyl albums I own. This cd has all her major hits and its great to hear that marvelous voice without all those pops and clicks of my old vinyl. And it may just be my old ears, but I swear the songs on this cd sound like re-recordings...not the originals. I could be wrong, but I've heard Heart of the Night hundreds of of times and on this cd, her voice sounds just a shade older. Even so, the songs still sound great and this is highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Hits and others.......2007-01-19

I wanted the hits, I got them and some others I don't remember on this album. Great to have the hits...guess I'll save my opinion on the others until I figure out whether I really like them or not.

5 out of 5 stars Juice Newton-Greatest Hits.......2007-01-08

Very Good CD well worth the price. She is a very good singer she
reminds me of Janie Frickie. She sings country and pop and baled
I really like this CD it has a bunch of here hits on it and some
that I have not heard before very nice.

Sincerely, Jason or Peter Pielak.

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Juice Newton collection from Raven Records!.......2007-06-27

First of all, a standing ovation for Raven Records for issuing Juice Newton's "Dirty Looks" album on CD! The album was released in 1983, one year before the CD format became an industry standard, and the album never made it to CD ... until now! Thank you, Raven Records!!! And more cheers to you for a wonderful remastering job on these two classic albums!

Now, about the music ...

If someone wanted to experience Juice Newton's stylistic and vocal ranges, I'd recommend the two albums contained on this CD compilation. Juice Newton is one of very few artists in music history who successfully blended pop and country and achieved multi-platinum crossover success - and the music here shows just how talented this extraordinary vocalist is.

The 1985 RCA release "Old Flame" is a decidedly country effort (and Newton's biggest hit in the genre). A huge commercial success, the album features three #1 country smashes and three additional Top Ten hits. Here, Raven has compiled all 11 tracks that appeared on various editions of the original album (the final track was "Let Your Woman Take Care Of You" or "Both To Each Other", depending on which version of "Old Flame" you happened to buy). If you are familar with country radio from the mid to late '80s, you'll undoubtedly recognize Newton's cathartic reading of Timi Turo's "Hurt" and the up-beat, rollicking "You Make Me Want To Make You Mine" (the latter of which garnered Newton a Grammy nomination for Best Female Vocalist). Other hits are here as well, such as the sparely produced yet powerful title song. Mixed in with the half-dozen hits are five other great songs, including Newton's should-have-been-released-as-a-single cover of Steeler Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You", as well as a folk-rock version of The Byrds' "Feel A Whole Lot Better". All in all, "Old Flame" is a solid country album with a roots rock edge to it. Sure, some of the tracks feature sonic licks specific to the '80s, but Newton's exemplary vocals are the focus here -- and this is one lady who sure can sing! Also, when "Old Flame" was recorded, Newton had recently recovered form surgery on her vocal chords, and there is an undeniable gruffness to her voice, which really works for the songs on this album.

After presenting "Old Flame", this collection travels back in time to 1983 and embraces the "Dirty Looks" album, Newton's final album for Capitol Records. While not as commercially successful as Newton's platinum "Juice" (1981) and "Quiet Lies" (1982) albums, "Dirty Looks" went Silver (250,000 copies sold) in the U.S. and Gold in Canada, and the album cemented Newton's reputation as an artist equally comfortable singing pop and country. The album starts jarringly with the over-produced title track, a rock-infused single that stalled at #90 on the Hot 100, making it Newton's lowest-charting of all 11 of her pop-chart singles. Luckily, the album relaxes and gets focused starting with the second track, "Tell Her No", the album's only bona-fide hit single (AC #14/Pop #27). From that point on, "Dirty Looks" is a deftly produced, rollercoaster ride of pop styles, including a roots rock number: the unforgettable "Keeping Me On My Toes". On this standout track, Newton gets huge points for sassily singing delicious lyrics like, "There was a hot-lipped, big-hipped part-time waitress/Shaking it across the floor/You were observin' everything she was servin'/I think that she has served you before". Other great tracks are "Runaway Hearts", "Twenty Years Ago" (later covered by Kenny Rogers, who topped the charts with it!), "Til I Loved You" (later a hit for Restless Heart, a group that got its name from a 1984 Juice Newton song!), and the gorgeous lullaby "For Believers", written by Newton's longtime musical partner Otha Young. It's a real shame that Capitol Records refused to promote the "Dirty Looks" album (Newton had decided to leave the label, and Capitol was ticked off), because the company deprived the public of some really great pop music!

If you are a Juice Newton fan, buying this CD is a no-brainer. Or if you are just interesting in getting to know her remarkable country-pop, cut your teeth on Raven Records' "Juice/Quiet Lies" CD release, followed by this collection. The four albums contained on the two disks showcase one of the most popular artists of the `80s at the peak of her career. (Note: If you choose to buy "Juice/Quiet Lies", do yourself a favor and don't buy the domestic release by Collectables. That company's version is not re-mastered, whereas Raven Records' version is BEAUTIFULLY re-mastered and sounds terrific and crisp!)

(Note to Raven Records: Only two of Juice Newton's solo albums have yet to be released on CD: "Take Heart" and "Well Kept Secret". My fingers are crossed in hopes that you will issue those! And an excellent bonus track would be "Let's Keep It That Way," a one-off single that was Juice Newton's first Top 40 hit! Please, please, please?)

5 out of 5 stars What a classic!.......2007-06-07

I'm not much of a country music fan, but Juice Newton converted me with her first song. This is a combination of her very best music and is an absolute classic. She sings from the heart and it's impossible to resist singing along with every song on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars a truly worthy CD for casual fans.......2006-10-23

I used to have many Juice's casettes when I was a lot younger. Somehow, when I got older, I just never thought of replacing them with CDs until last year. I love her songs, yet I don't have that strong urge to buy every CD of hers. So after comparing all the titles I could find on Amazon, I decided that the most thorough and economic way of getting some of my teenage memories back was to get this one and another collection titled "Emotion", which was released in 1993. If you are someone like me, who loves Juice, yet not to the extent to buy each Cd of hers, then get this one and "Emotion". I guarantee that every penny you spend will be worth it. So many songs of hers still sound touching now. And that's really something.

5 out of 5 stars The truly ultimate Juice.......2005-09-13

If you are a TRUE fan of vintage Juice this is the CD to get. The remastered qualities of this collection make it the only collection you need of original Juice recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Two classic albums digitally remastered!.......2004-11-17

In 1982 and 1983, Juice Newton was Billboard's Album Artist of the Year ... and the albums contained on this disc are why! And the music here is BEAUTIFULLY REMASTERED! The CD contains Newton's two platinum-selling efforts from the early '80s. The hits everyone knows are here, but there's some stunning non-hit material as well, such as the beautifully painful "I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can," which acts as a wonderful complement to "Angel of the Morning" since both songs are about one-night stands. Another treasure on this CD is the Newton-penned "River of Love," a meditation on the elusive nature of love.

The collection traverses through a variety of styles, including classic country, roots rock, torch music, and very-'80s pop. Newton's voice is strong throughout, with just the right amount of power and vulnerability. Standout tracks include "I'm Gonna Be Strong," "Shot Full Of Love," "The Sweetest Thing," "Break It To Me Gently" (for which Newton finally won a Grammy for Best Female Vocalist) and "Adios Mi Corazon."

As a bonus track, Raven records included "It's A Heartache," which was a minor hit (Pop #85) for Newton in 1978 before it became a blockbuster (Pop #3) for Bonnie Tyler later that same year. The inclusion of this track is underwhelming, since it is poorly produced and not even from the same period of Newton's career as the rest of the CD. Furthermore, the track has been released on no fewer than three Newton CDs in the last 17 years. Wouldn't a real "bonus" track have been a previously unreleased track, or a song never available on CD, such as "Twenty Years Ago" or "Til I Loved You" from Newton's criminally overlooked 1983 album "Dirty Looks"?

Still, the CD is loaded with wonderful Urban Cowboy-era music. Stow your Shania Twain CDs and give a listen to the lady who paved the way for artists like Twain.

For another great Juice Newton CD from Raven Records, pick up the 2007 "Old Flame"/"Dirty Looks" compilation!

Named after the thriving rap subgenre he popularized, Lil' Jon's Crunk Juice makes no claims to be anything but XXX-rated, hip-hop mosh pit music. Three 6 Mafia's crunked-out compositions may predate Lil' Jon's, but Jon's unique production methods continue to dazzle on cuts like "What U Gon' Do," where protégé Lil Scrappy's vocals create jarring audio effects. The trademark futuristic blend of Miami bass, Jamaican dub, electronica, and punk--littered with call-and-response chants--is in full force on "Crunk Juice," "Get Crunk," and "Da Blow." More impressively, he's broadened his crunk palette to include a brilliant rocked-out Rick Rubin collaboration, along with more conventional R&B tunes featuring Usher and R. Kelly--he even looks to D.C.-style go-go beats for inspiration on "Aww Skeet Skeet." The vulgar yet hilarious Chris Rock comedy cameos help make this album a winner, even if it's intentionally zany and lyrically vacuous. --Dalton Higgins

Does anyone sell singles anymore? This is not a play all the way through type of CD. But neither are many of the "Greats" as the most harshest critics of this bunch have listed! I do think a 'Hits' CD would be better in their case, because it is sad to have to buy a whole CD to listen to a few good songs. It's even sadder though to see people who know they don't have any interest in a group or music genre, write a review out of sheer need to criticize and bash other people's musical choice. Go somewhere and voice an opinion where it matters on something more rediculous than music that you DON'T have to listen to, such as kids passing every class but can't graduate because of TAKS tests, or pitiful health care, or the war or something!

1 out of 5 stars What the hell is this?.......2007-05-31

How on Earth did this ever get accepted as music? Just a bunch of idiots incoherently screaming over some stupid beat. I can't bear to image how bad the next music fad will be.

1 out of 5 stars A Perspective Of An Expert Butcherer.......2007-03-17

Lil Jon is one of the many reasons why rap is given a negative image. Let me give you a list and explain why I loathe this talentless, shameful act and his disgrace towards society:

1. Voice - Just how can that guy's senseless yelling be tolerated? All this guy does is yell. He doesn't even rap. It's just thoughtless, obnoxious "YAY-YAH" over and over (along with some other stuff). I bet his music couldn't even be considered rap if it weren't for all those guest musicians.

2. Plagiarism - The name "Lil Jon" originated from the Robin Hood tale. It may have a slightly different spelling, but it's just bad enough that he could disgrace history like that. He also uses samples from copyrighted songs and completely butchers the purpose and meaning of that song. I mean, is mixing Slayer's "Raining Blood" intro and Lil Jon's abysmal bellowing necessary? Not at all.

3. "Crunk" - This is also meant to be a plagiarism issue as well, as Dirty South rappers were the first one to coin that phrase. However, Lil Jon wants to take all the credit by taking the word and overusing it over and over so that he seems to be the inventor of that word. Sorry, Jon Smith, but you do not possess credit for creating that word. You just made it into a derivative word that people say, yet they probably have no clue what it means (it means to get drunk and baked).

4. Image - Golden grills make you look like some person who cares less about his dental hygeine. Do you ever remove your sunglasses? And your crunk juice is just a marketing scam.

By all means, avoid this annoying, meaningless, plagiarized trash. Rap isn't (mostly wasn't) just like that way, but thanks to your plague, you have given a once tolerable music genre a bad name.

1 out of 5 stars Punk Juice.......2007-03-05

I only liked two songs of this album Real N***a Roll Call(because of Ice Cube) and Grand Finale(T.I., Bun B, Jadakiss' verses were hot but Ice Cube steals the show). Lovers and Friends might have been a great song for the ladies until Lil Jon decided it was a good idea to rap and ruined the old Michael Sterling classic. More Disposables: Da Blow(chopped and screwed up garbage), One Night Stand, Stick That Thing Out(the second worst track on here), Stop F*****g Wit Me(the worst track one here and Lil Jon gets to annoy metalheads with his bad rapping on this rock/rap infusion. Big Plus!), Awww Skeet(What the.....?) and the rest of this album. Bottom Line: Lil Jon is the worst thing to come out of ATL since..........Jermaine Dupri! Dude couldnt flow to save his pathetic life and the guest appearances are just as bad plus his beats are too redundant now. Besides those two songs that I liked this album should be avoided like a Jehovah's Witness passing out watchtowers.

5 out of 5 stars High Expectations.......2005-08-05

A Girl like You" gave Edwyn Collins a hit single of the likes of which he had never seen(despite "Rip it Up"s top ten status in the UK back in 83)but no artist could be more removed from the dreadful one hit wonder label than Postcard's proudest son.

Edwyn Collins started his musical career as the driving force of the charming and trailblazing Orange Juice that foreshadowed, in an era of post punk gloominess, a gentler, and groovier kind of pop from which the Smiths would later build upon.

With the demise of Orange Juice after three albums and an EP Edwyn kickstarted his solo career with a couple of flawed yet rewarding records leading up to his most fully realized album:Gorgeous George in which all his personas coalesced ranging from the crooner(Low Expectations),the popster(Make me feel again),the rocker(Out of this World)and the vitriolic songwriter he always had lurking below the surface(The Campaign for Real Rock)to form a trully representative sample of his craft and one of the 90's best recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Excerpted, http://kachinacrowe.journalspace.com, #258........2004-08-17

Gorgeous George is a master piece. Released in 1993, George was Scottish singer Edwyn Collins' third solo effort after six years leading the successful post punk band Orange Juice. This album produced Collins' biggest hit to date: "A Girl Like You" heard on the soundtrack to Empire Records. "Girl Like You" combines a hard edge and pounding bassline with Collins' lounge lizard-esque vocal quality to create a song that could be a Rat Pack re-mix. This is no where near the best of the album which opens with "The Campaign for Real Rock" a blistering take on the 90s alternative scene:

'Yes, yes , yes its the summer festival/ the truely detestible summer festival...'

Fast forward a few tracks to "Low Expectations": 'You've been down this road before/ which is not to say you're bored/ or that you shouldn't want for more/ it's just your expectations should be lower...'

Are all of Collins' songs this cynical? For the most part. However their wry, dark tone fit perfectly with Collins' extrodinarily sardonic voice. The album is rounded though with up tempo numbers, "A Girl Like You" and "Make Me Feel Again", making the album a rocker. Ballads like North of Heaven and "If You Could Love Me" are clever AND torch worthy. Gorgeous George's parting shot however, a secret track, reminds you which side of the sentimental fence the masterful Edwyn Collins truely falls on.

I reccomend this album to -- EVERYONE! no, really, I do. However I especially reccomend Gorgeous George to those of you who are riding the Franz Ferdinand wave. Continue with your Scottish theme, but don't go all Proclaimers on me:>P

5 out of 5 stars This is THE one CD to have........2003-12-17

I would rate this probably his best work ever. If you ever liked Edwyn Collins, then this is the album to have.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice and sardonic wit.......2003-09-17

Edwyn Collins showcases his wit and his wonderful singing voice on this 1995 release. "A Girl Like You" is just the tip of the iceberg--Collins' sly sense of humor comes through on songs like "Low Expectations", "North of Heaven", "Gorgeous George" and the bonus track "Moron". The music is wonderful all the way through switching from the guitar-driven to more soulful, groovy tracks. I had the pleasure of seeing Edwyn live in Austin recently and he was fantastic--just him and a guitar. He played many songs off this CD and they were just as good without all the fancy studio effects--a true testament to Collins' craft as a songwriter. And yes, his voice is just as great live. Note: Apparently "A Girl Like You" is being picked up for the next Demi Moore movie which will bring the song to a whole new audience.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums i own.......2002-04-01

Sadly, i bought this album at a pawn shop. This is one of those albums that should never see the bargain bin. The hit song "A Girl Like You" is still a good song, even after you listen to the whole album, which is even better. Edwyn Collins had a reputation for being a perfectionist, and i believe it.. except, you don't get the same sense of boredom one gets from other 'perfectionist' bands. He has a knack for creating anthem-style repeat'd lines, that you enjoy hearing over and over, and can't help but sing along ("yes yes yes it's the summer festival, the truly detestable summer festival", "this music don't take you higher,...From start to finish, a truly fantastic album.

5 out of 5 stars "Sip the Juice, I Got Enough to Go Around".......2006-07-16

As soon as the first song starts to play, you already know this soundtrack is a hit. With rap artists like Naughty by Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. & Rakim, Too Short, Salt N Peppa, EPMD, and Cypress Hill, and with New Jack Swing artists like Teddy Riley and Aaron Hall, who can go wrong with this soundtrack? There's not really one bad song that you can name on here. Every artist comes correct. It's not too often that a soundtrack this good will be released.

The song I like most on here is "Juice (Know the Ledge)" by legends Eric B. & Rakim. It has that classic, old-school style that would satisfy any Hip-Hop head. I love the beat and of course Rakim's lyrics are great. Big Daddy Kane's "Nuff Respect" is another classic track on here, showing off old-school perfection. "So You Want To Be A Gangster" by Too Short had him taking time off from his pimp-filled rhymes to show that being a thug isn't all it's cracked up to be. Salt N Peppa tell you a man's true intentions with "He's Gamin' On Ya". "Uptown Anthem" is the perfect opening track for this compilation. Who can go wrong with "Shoot Em Up" by then-rookies Cypress Hill, or "It's Goin Down" by EPMD. The Juvenile Committee outline the plot of the movie with the enjoyable "Flipside".

Teddy Riley and Aaron Hall, both members of Guy, respectively, deliver two on-point cuts. Riley and Tammy Lucas look for reassurance on "Is It Good To You", which boasts an uptempo beat and has that classic New Jack sound. Hall's "Don't Be Afraid" is very catchy, with another nice, uptempo, New Jack sound that never sounds too dated. "Does Your Man Know About Me" by Raheim starts off with a rap, and then goes into some smooth singing. The "People Get Ready" remix by the Brand New Heavies ends the soundtrack off on a good note. The only real song the compilation can do without is "What Could Be Better B**ch" by Son of Bazerk.

With the exception of the one song, this is a perfect soundtrack from start to finish. Almost every song is a hit. With legendary artist after legendary artist, this soundtrack is worth your money, where ever you can find it. Hip-Hop & R&B just doesn't sound like this anymore. I would recommend you to buy the movie, and then buy the soundtrack at where ever you can find it. It's a perfect combination.

5 out of 5 stars ridin' on a dangerous dick.......2006-06-15

I have searched high and low for the CD to replace my worn out cassette copy of JUICE... I honestly don't know the artist preforming, doesn't mean I can't promote it.. Do know I have turned another onto it and his favorite song was to a ex of mine cause he had me now and I was ridin' dangerously :) I definately do like "is it good to you", and "so you wanna be a gangsta". I'm a 47 year old "caucasion" grandmother, and my co-workers say I act younger than them. So for all the flappers and the young rappers, age is a number and state of mind and colour is an obstruction. Music doesn't care... Lean back and do the rock away... Then enjoy the ride.. :)

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best soundtrack eva.......2006-03-19

This soundtrack is as good as the movie. The standout tracks are Know the Ledge, Uptown Anthem, and its goin down. This is a classic in everyway. A mix of rap/r&b, and east/west. You cant go wrong with this. My only gripe is a track or two from the movie is'nt on here. Kill a man by Cypress Hill.

2 out of 5 stars pretty crappy.......2005-06-27

only four good songs-uptown anthem by naughty by nature, juice by eric b. and rakim,it's goin down by epmd, and shoot em up by cypress hill. tupac should be on here since he was in the movie. he would make the album a lot better!

5 out of 5 stars what the hell.......2005-03-29

I haven't heard the whole of this album, I've only heard Naughty by Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. and Rakim and Too $hort and am very impressed with the sounds of this. I especially loved Juice (Know the Ledge) by Eric B. and Rakim because it has that groovy old skool beat I miss a million, waaaay better than the sound of today. My only complaint is why isn't 2Pac on here since he was the star of the movie and a rapper when this was shot?

And to that idiot who said Eric B. and Rakim's song was a good song before they fell off, what the HELL are you talking about??? Big Daddy Kane fell off but Eric B. and Rakim never fell off, you stupid idiot. Check out your facts, Don't Sweat the Technique was a f*ckin mean album and that was AFTER this album was released. Don't know what world you were in when that was released.

1 out of 5 stars Beware: Not the original versions of JN Hits!.......2006-10-26

This album is a complete nonsense. Why Juice Newton decided to "recycle" her original Hits? The "new" versions are not worth on buying this CD!

4 out of 5 stars A good album, but not the versions from the radio........2005-08-29

Juice Newton is easily one of the best pop singers of the last 30 years, no doubt about it. But fans should be warned that while the versions of some of her hits available on this CD are quite good, they are not the same versions that are played on the radio. Basically, this album is a re-sequenced version of Newton's 1998 CD "The Trouble With Angels," which has been out of print for about five years (and features three "new" songs).

If you haven't heard any of Newton's recent albums, I HIGHLY recommend "American Girl," which is much better than the music on this CD (and it even includes two of the new songs from this CD). Still, if you want newer versions of seven of her hits, this is the CD for you. Also, please note that this is the only in-print CD where you can find Newton's lovely 1998 single "When I Get Over You."

Before Camper Van Beethoven, no "punk" band would've thought to blend Eastern European folk rhythms with Tex-Mex, ska, reggae, psych-rock, punk-rock, pop-rock and...well, whatever else was out there. This five-disc box set features all the early CVB albums on compact disc. Their first outing, Telephone Free Landslide Victory, sounds as unique and fresh today as it did in 1985. Mostly remembered for the sublimely ridiculous "Take the Skinheads Bowling" and their take on Black Flag's "Wasted," it set the bar high for subsequent releases. The band followed the oddball masterpiece with more cleverness and irresistible charm on II & III. Dabbling in Mekons country-punk turf for the first half, they slid into a wry psychedelia in the second. It really is two albums in one. The band's self-titled third outing found the California boys scratching their heads out loud, wondering exactly what to do next, and not arriving at a consensus. It's an adventurous jumble, with a few really outstanding tracks. Also in the box is the Vantiquities collection of various 1980s recordings, originally released in 1993 after their two-record stint with Virgin Records and a live collection, Greatest Hits Played Faster, which opens with a magisterial "All Her Favorite Fruit" and ends, appropriately, with a sad-sounding "One of These Days." --Lorry Fleming

Album Description

Closing in on 20 years after their formation, Camper Van Beethoven proudly announce the release of a box set entitled "Cigarettes & Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years." "Cigarettes and Carrot Juice" contains 4 albums of classic recordings dating primarily from 1984-1987, the prime years of the bands existence in Santa Cruz, California, a sleepy coastal college town which proved to be an idyllic place for the prolific young band to woodshed their talents. Camper Van Beethoven are looked upon as one of the seminal "college rock" bands of the 1980s, predating the 1990s wave of micro-marketed alternative rock. A wildly diverse mixture of personalities and music, "Cigarettes and Carrot Juice" features the work of a unique band as they captured their voice on outings for small independents such as Independent Project Records, Rough Trade, and their own Pitch-A-Tent label.

5 out of 5 stars A few details..........2007-04-10

This set gives us the first three CVB albums as originally released. Recent reissues have new track sequences, with bonus material mixed in. This may not be a terrible idea, but I don't plan on buying them.

The Vantiquities disc is an interesting collection of outtakes etc between both sides of the "Vampire Can Mating Oven" EP (1987). The new, expanded Vantiquities adds five demos from the "Beloved/Pie" era, but the disc in this box has MUCH better sound, all the way through. What's going on, guys?

The live album is neither here nor there. I saw them a few years back (here in Santa Cruz) and they sounded a hell of a lot better than this. Then again, they've had 15 years to improve, and they don't hate each other anymore.

I love this band. This is a great way to get the first three albums in their original form, with the original artwork, at a decent price.

[Note for fanatics: "We're a Bad Trip" is the faster, more polished one. The earlier take is now a bonus track on the 04 edition of "II&III".]

5 out of 5 stars Great Album,Too bad You cant buy it from Amazon :( :(.......2005-03-21

My wife tried ordering this item thru a Amazon listed seller (caiman) December the 10th it was due to ship out in 3 days (for a x-mas present nonetheless), by end of January it had not shipped. I cancelled our order with caiman and tried to order thru AMAZON itself the same day Feb 3rd i believe. Here it is March the 20th. No nothing , just an endless extending wait. Apparently AMAZON & their sellers feel they can list items they dont , wont and cant stock. Dont waste your time. I just cancelled my order and bought it on E-BAY , it will ship tommorow. Forget Amazon, or unless you like being blown off endlessly by email with no LIVE person to talk to, then by all means order this thru Amazon (or Caiman!). I prefer to spend my money else-where, this has really soured me.

5 out of 5 stars Best Camper Van Beethoven CD's EVER!!!!.......2004-06-03

5 great CD's with great songs like "Crossing Over" or "Mao Reminices About his Days in Southern China". The songs on Greatest Hits Played Faster, the live CD, sound better than the recordings on Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart or Key Lime Pie. It is relatively cheap for a 5 CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Vampire Can Mating Oven.......2003-09-19

In my wallet I keep a "want list" of music and movies for all of those times I find myself in a store and can't remember that album or movie I wanted. One of the first entries is "Camper Van Beethoven--First three albums". Finally, this wonderful boxed set is available. The collection includes, as stated, all of the band's work from the Santa Cruz years. The CD cases are cardboard miniature reproductions of the original album jackets and the fourth and fifth discs are rarities and a live disc. If you remember the fun of their music and haven't heard it for a while, get this set. It brought back memories of a less responsible time and the music, it seems, hasn't been remastered leaving the vocals slightly buried which was always a part of their sound I liked. They could entertain you with light ska instrumentals or rock with catchy guitar riffs. The extensive liner notes are interesting too, except the part where the writer tries to defend the band's selling out as not selling out but simply wanting to sign to a bigger label to make their music more available. No problem here with selling out if you don't change your music to do it; and that's exactly what they did. I feel their major label stuff just isn't as fun as the early stuff..... and Cracker was horrible. If you remember why you liked Camper Van Beethoven in the first place, buy this set.

4 out of 5 stars I got some funny ideas of what sounds good........2003-03-14

Last year a friend of mine invited me to see Camper Van Beethoven on their recent limited reunion tour, and although I only had Key Lime Pie, their last full album of new studio material, I agreed. While still a pretty good record, their set proved "Key Lime Pie" to just scratch the surface of their musical diversity. Basic guitar pop songs would rest beside russian can can ska instrumentals, straight country ballads, hardcore punk satire and power-book enhanced Fleetwood Mac covers. Needless to say, I was intrigued by their earlier releases, and the next time I had enough cash to blow, I found myself the proud owner of this box set. Although the first disk is the best in my opinion, all three of the original albums show a creative, clever, unique, and musically talented band at work. In addition, the rarities colection camper vantiquities, despite being a compilation of 3 years worth of material, doesn't feel any more or less cohesive than the rest of their albums, a credit to their freewheeling style, and is far less mixed than one would expect from such a compilation. Finally disc five is a live album mostly drawn from what was to be their final tour in europe, which focuses on material from their two major label albums. While a bit dissapointingly slow for something called "Greatest Hits Played Faster", it still captures some fine perofmances of the band, and is a nice extra, though probably not something you'd want to buy the whole box set for if you already own the rest of the albums. All in all, if you're curious about the band or just want to hear some challenging but catchy diverse rock music, this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars SOUTH AFRICAN CONNECTION.......2004-04-02

This soundtrack is off the cuffing chains. Check out track 1 by Cappadona from the WU TANG. Track 5 by Monalisa is also wicked. Track 11 by UGK ft Keith Murray, hey the list is endless. Mobb Deep with Up North Trip... Oh my god. Pity soundtracks we get lately are not as tight. ALUTA KONTINUA (Struggle Continues)!!!

3 out of 5 stars pretty Good.......2004-02-09

I dug r. kelly's "Tempo slow"&also the track he wrote for the Isley Brother's "Let's lay together".which has a strong O'jays vibe going on there. but I gotta say Joe's "What Your Man won't do" stole the Soundtrack.that is still a on point track.

5 out of 5 stars HOT soundtrack!.......2000-06-14

This soundtrack is HOT! My favorite song is "Time To Shine" by Lil' Kim! and Mona Lisa. I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH AND I LOVE LIL' KIM.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-06-04

This soundtrack LP is off the hook. All the artists came to work on this joint. The movie and the LP dropped at a good time 96 when a lot of dope tracks came out.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is da bomb.......1999-08-14

When I first saw the film I knew the soundtrack'd be sweet, and ever sice I brought it it's been stuck in my player. A few of the songs are slow and smooth, like Time to shine, which has a nice mixture with Lilm Kim & Mona Lisa. Some of the songs like Winter Warz make it to my best hits list, and Funky sounds by Lil Bud & Tizone is Phat. So's Freak It Out by Doug. E. Fresh and Maintain ny Erick Sermon. There's something for everyone, and dependin on how you feel, you can change the tunes to suit you. If your feeling mellow, just stick on Let's Lay Together or Don't give up, but if you're out for some pain & pleasure, go for winter warz or Maintain. Anyways this is a B*****n' album

4 out of 5 stars You people dont know hip hop.......2005-06-24

Ok let me give you a real review of this album.... First off the sound quality of this album isnt very good at all... it sounds like something you would record on tape off of the radio on a cheap stereo.... HOWEVEVER, that has nothing to do with production. Everyone keeps saying the production is bad... bad sound quality on the disc doesnt have anything to do with the beats. The tracks on this disc were for the most part produced by the Molemen. The Molemen are not only one of the most respected production team in Chicagos underground but also nation/world wide. The have produced tracks for Slug, Vakill, Aesop Rock, MF Doom and many other underground STARS. So no it wasnt recorded in a basement to answer that question. The beats are Hip-Hop. Its not dr.dre or timbaland. It is hip-hop so of course all these mainstream fans are gonna complain. The sound quality on the disc is poor because this was NEVEr intended to be an album. These are just random tracks Juice did with the molemen over a span of a few years and DJ Risky Biz decided to put them onto an album one day,,, much like all those 2Pac bootlegs albums... poor sound quality but that has nothin to do with bad beats or production!

As for the content of the album... If you dont know Juice the guy can flat out rhyme. His punchlines are one of a kind, his matephors are fantastic. he is the tru definition of an MC. There is a reason this guy is probably the best known battle rapper of ALL TIME. No the songs dont have much substance but if you are a hip hop fan who appreciates an MC who has the rhyming style of a battle MC with crazy punchlines then this is a good pick for you. Juice is one of a kind. Ive followed him since day 1 so trust this review more than the others who dont know what they are saying.... I gave it 4 stars because some of the tracks sound quality is just horid and some tracks should have been left off the album... but all in all this is Juice doin his thing. Even if you are unsure about this give tha lbum a try cuz it is a rare album and somewhat of a collectors item even if you dont dig it.... but give it a try and listen to the remix with JayZ and hear Juice drop the hotter verse. listen to him outshine some of the Alkoholiks and Kurupt live and in person, hear him rap with a young Twista... and just hear him snap lyrically on tracks like "pressure", "the man", and "key to the city".... if u are into pop rap not for you, but if u love hip hop give it a try.. check him out and www.theconglom.com or www.myspace.com/mcjuice

DONT SLEEP ON JUICE! he is da g.o.a.t lyrically. ok mayb his production aint that great but thats not what hes about da ziggn unpalatable lyrically. he even beat eminem back in 97 in a battle. hes only ever lost 2 battles. 1 to supernatural the other i dont know. he should hook up wit kanye like his homeboy rhymesayer did. dat would b dope.

4 out of 5 stars Ok..........2003-10-26

The person that gave Juice a negative review and spoke about Jay-Z in comparison is an idiot... Thats all you need to know...

#2 Rap music started out with "random lyrics" as that idiot calls it. A Juice album is not meant for everyone... its actually meant for people who like listening to Rap music in its most original form, and not the overly mainstream versions that you hear on the radio... If thats what you are looking for, go buy a Jay-Z album...
