2 out of 5 stars Plodding Production, Boring Lyrics.......2004-01-16

Featuring Kool Kieth, Del, Aceyalone, and the Arsonists, among others, I thought this album might be ok.

"OK" about sums it up. The beats are pretty repetitive and most of the songs consist of simple loops. Kool Kieth and Aceyalone tracks have the most interesting lyrics and are the best in my opinion, but they def don't carry the whole thing.

I can see why some people might like this, but I'm more into interesting production (IMHO) from guys like El-P, Shadow, Automator, Blockhead, and Amon Tobin to name a few. If you're really into those guys' work, this album might not be for you.

Don't buy it unless you want to buy my copy from me ;)

I love Non Phixion ..tight tight tight..and they need to come out with an album..Im predicting one soon.. But As fars as Hip-hop compilations go this is a GOOD one.. why?? you say well.. the best from the North, EAST, and West are on this Album.. Swollen Members... Dialated Peeps..non-phixion..Buc Fifty..LMNO.. etc etc.. all on this Comp. So if your a fan of hip-hop..Not rap then get this album ..But heck they are calling everything hip-hop these dayze..and its a shame.. get this album if your a fan of good Music with phat beats and tight a$$ lyrics..

5 out of 5 stars Front line.......2000-07-15

If these are the defenders of the undreworld then we are pretty safe for a long while. This CD is tight as hell. I slept on this for a while too. But as with all things, better late than never. Everyone represents their true style in the hip-hop world (undaground that is...). No radio play for any of this makes it that much "phata". From start to finish this is not your average assimilation of Dope mc's. And if you wanna finish 'em off, Aceyalone neva disappoints!!

5 out of 5 stars One Word - EXCELENT!.......2000-07-07

I thought this CD was off the hook! I think the best song on the album was Trinity Lost by Pep Love from the Prose. Great! Pep Love is one of the most over looked rappers out. I think he is one of the greatest. He has his own rhyme schemn unique to him alone. Great song, great CD. Buy It, it will do you good!

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2000-04-02

i picked this cd up because the cover reminded me of the orgasmo cavalcade of thugs lp, and it had tracks from a lot of big name "underground" m.c.s i was disappointed to find that only one track was worth buying - the rest are boring. props to kool kieth for bringing new concepts to hip hop. if you like creative futuristic underground hip hop i would recomend celestial squadron or beneath the surface instead. defenders of the underground was a waste of my money.

5 out of 5 stars Great underground hip hop!.......2000-01-04

This is great, intelligent underground hip hop... Almost every song on this CD is witty, intelligent, and slamming. If you like REAL hip hop and enjoy complex and intriguing lyrics, then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Defending Hip hops Roots.......2001-03-11

I bought this Cd recently just because i Do not own a Cd by the Canadain Group Swollen Members and Since Madchild Is the driving force behind this Compilation i wanted to see what songs he helped put together for this Album...Not a bad selection albeit some of the tracks heard on this album are on many other compilations or Cd's its a good mix of whose who in the underground scene..Dialted peoples..Non-phixion..the arsonist..Aceyalone and many more....

The Track i like most that stands out to me is the "Variety" track by Moka Only..He sounds like a poor mans Common..

True hip hop for those of you not into material Shining..
