i remember these guys from the 80's and i'm glad i could still find a copy of some of their best tunes. this is a good cd.

5 out of 5 stars From a BIG Player fan........2005-09-27

I want to start my review of this CD by saying up front that I consider Player one of my favorite bands ever.Over course of many years they have managed five albums (Four from the late 70's early 80's version of the band and one from 1996 by core members Peter Beckett and Ron Moss). Each album contains a wealth of great songs played by really impressive musicians.

This CD is an excellent compilation of songs and covers all five albums. All of their albums have been released on CD (either here in the US or as imports). I recommend this set for anyone looking for an overview of the band.
NOTE: Check out my review of the Ron Moss solo album which is produced and arranged by Peter Beckett. I consider this another Player album.

2 out of 5 stars Well, ONE Great Song..........2004-09-06

"This Time I'm In It For Love" is one terrific tune, and you can get the full version here. It's worth it, if you love the song. If not...well, these guys get old really, really quickly.

1 out of 5 stars What Hits?.......2003-05-13

Maybe I missed something way back when but I only remember the one song "Baby Come Back" and I thought that was by Firefall(silly me). So what are all these other songs about? Seems to me a CD single would have covered the entire greatest hits collection of Player.

Norman Cook's bubble-gum techno songs--put out under a variety of guises over the years, including Pizzaman and Freak Power--are essential staples on any international dance floor. Fatboy Slim, however, is the former Housemartin's most successful incarnation, launching a Top 40 crossover hit and popular advertising jingle with last year's "Going out of My Head." You've Come a Long Way, Baby picks up where the smash single left off, cheekily pairing acidic synthesizers and drum machines with big, dumb vocal samples. It takes considerable effort sitting through an entire album of these energized tunes, but taken in small doses, songs like "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Soul Surfing" are like rays of sunshine. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Loop The Loops.......2007-02-27

Most humans thrive on routine. It's not just the steady comfort of familiarity, it's also the drive of habituation, the power behind the incessant. From heartbeats to sunsets, coffee to cigarettes, and morning rituals to bedtime habits, many of us find something altogether soothing about certainty. Even those who like to mix it up can't deny that there are specific drives that require a sort of pounding regularity. Hell, just take a look at the basic mechanism of sex.

Fatboy Slim co-opts this need with glaring glee. In fact, if taken in those terms, each of his songs on this album could be seen, on some level, as the melodic approximation of sex. He changes things around occasionally, and usually with a finesse that amps the friction, but for the most part the songs operate with a happy repetition of a thrumming big beat. This isn't love-making as a slow dance; this is head-banging, foot-stomping pounding.

The more popular ones ("The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You") you've probably heard and can see how they use funky loops, found sound, and percussive frequency to goad the nerves. Most of the others, I'd argue, are just as addictive as a regular morning latte. "Gangster Tripping" spins together surf board washouts with ballroom waltzes spun at 60 rpms. "Kalifornia" crackles with robo-tronic slips and slides. "Love Island," one of the raunchiest tracks, combines deep bass plodding with techno pipe blasts.

There are times when Fatboy forgets to add a little diversity. In fact, any spots where the songs fail occur precisely because Fatboy decides to drag things out just a little bit longer than he should. The endings of "Soul Surfing" and "Acid 8000" and the vocal loop in "In Heaven" are all fine examples of Mr. Cook overusing his passionately played hooks.

Still, even if Fatboy Slim succumbs to a little jack-rabbiting with his rhythms and rhymes, those slightly grating moments are the thin and dismissable crust on something that is juicy and pulsing. No one would call this record great art, but it is great music that is bound to inspire great fun.

5 out of 5 stars New to electronic? Start here!.......2007-02-14

Fatboy Slim is easily one the most known artist in electronic, and for all the best reasons possible. Fatboy Slim creates great music for the mainstream, at the same time attracting critical acclaim and respect from people who actually have decent taste in music (as long as you aren't a MTV poser who likes The Rockafeller Skank for no reason, you know, the type that like just one song and don't even know who it is).

You've probally heard the Rockafeller Skank (Right about now, the funk soul brother), but everything else is just as good. Fatboy Slim's music is cool and all, but I don't think it's for everybody. A couple of harsh noises also pop out in places (careful of your eardrums on The Rockafeller Skank, there's a harsh buzzing noise after the tempo slows down, Kalifornia can also blow out your ears if your not careful). So it's not as mainstream as some people say, even though at least three songs became successful singles.

Mainstream or not, who gives a _____? Fatboy Slim is cool! It's also not too intense, so it's the ideal begginer's electronic album. The sound samples are also use here, the songs follow a pattern, so you can trust them, as long as they are high quality (amazon's aren't exactly top __________ notch high quality). Fatboy Slim's music has many layers to it, which is excellent when you need electronic music that's more than just cheesy techno.

Fatboy Slim's music isn't rap either, although these beats could definitly be great beats for rap. But considering how much time Norman Cook (that's Slim's real name) spent on making this album, it's understandable. Hey, you could always rap to it, just don't get carried away (whatever).

10/10

3 out of 5 stars The songs are better than just the the pure dance grooves.......2006-11-17

I am a rock fan and do not care for dance music.

The songs on here that more resemble conventional song structure, with lyrics, are what "float my boat" as opposed to the more synthasized, groove oriented tracks.

"Rockefeller Skank" and "Praise you" are the clear highlights

4 out of 5 stars aa.......2006-07-09

i dont hav this album, i only heard the rockafeller skank song and its pretty cool. i like that lord finesse sample

4 out of 5 stars dancing in the streets.......2006-02-12

I was not a Fatboy fan prior to buying this album and only bought such after the Chemical Brothers endorsed it during a magazine interview. If you desire something that will make you move your feet without listening to frantic fast-paced BPM tracks then buy this album. Also, the production and mixing are superb. While this is an "old school" album it is still contemporary and best of all, enjoyable. Fatboy is phat and far better than almost anything released by Def Jam.

5 out of 5 stars She has stolen my heart with this one !.......2007-05-09

Regina Belle shot to fame in 1989 with her single, 'Baby Come To Me' -- from her album Stay with Me -- which was a perfect example of the jazz-tinged soul-pop balladry which she had been recording since the mid 1980's.
The title of this 'best of ' collection was also Belle's worldwide hit single. The material featured here has been selected from her four studio albums which were recorded between 1987 and 1995.
With her own sophisticated brand of romantic soul, the acclaimed vocalist was one of the most popular contemporary singers of the eighties and nineties.
Once hailed as a female Luther Vandross, or as the less commercial side of Anita Baker, besides soul, her singing has roots in jazz and classic pop and she has Oscar and Grammy awards to her name.
This 'Best of' features a collection of the finest songs from all her albums including the platinum award winning smash 'A Whole New World'.
When Regina Belle wraps her velvety voice around a love song, the embrace is everlasting.
From a jazz whisper to a soulful serenade to a gospel shout, the gentle comforts of hope and faith are never far away.
Regina has soothed us with such standards as " Baby Come To Me" and " Make It Like It Was" and "If I Could".
Her dynamic duets with Peabo Bryson, Barry White and James "J.T." Taylor are also featured here.
They are stirring reminders that Regina has always been consistent, engaging, stylish and innovative. Never boring or derivative.
Please, listen also to her latest, unmissable masterpiece Lazy Afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars The irresistible rise of Ms. Regina Belle........2007-03-07

Regina Belle is an excellent, solid , always uncompromising , engaging and consistent performer who has churned out some really nice tracks in the last 20 years.
I'm into Rnb/Soul/Hip Hop, but I have no problem saying that I own this really good set of songs.
Her music has always been ground-breaking,adventurous and extremely good.
"Baby Come To Me" is her signature track, and most people's favourite Regina track. It's a perfect track and one which she will always be able to say is a "classic". This track will get played on radio in another 20 years time.
"A whole New World" is a track with that 90's feel which is catchy but it's track # 3 "So Many Tears" which I love. It's a perfect song for someone you love, and the lyrics are what most of us think of in that situation. It's tracks like this that makes Regina a true star and a real woman with something to say.
"Make It Like It Was" and "If I Could" are two soulful tracks. The latter being more hearfelt and deep about a mother and her child. Great stuff. Please, listen to Celine Dion's version from the album 'Miracle' and then form your opinion on it...
"What Goes Around" is classic Regina. It's her sophisticated sound. "Show Me The Way" is a heart wrenching number, which has some fantastic sax riffs, and a track which only her voice could make sound so real.
She does a jazz cover-medley of the classic Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway tracks that is "Save The Children/Someday We'll all Be Free". Its a spectacular effort, and unmatched masterpiece and you won't be skipping it.
The song "A Whole New world" was the killer track that went to number one, and really put her firmly on the map. It still gets lots and lots of airplay today and will for many years to come.
I've nearly forgot to mention the absolute classic duet "All I Want Is Forever". This track was superb when it was released all those years ago -and it still is today.
Regina will never have the superstar status that some have (just think about somebody like Janet Jackson or Celine Dion...In my modest opinion, she outclasses them by far !!!), but I think that she really doesn't care and is happy to be making good quality music that people enjoy.
This set is superb listening and pure, sublime delight for your heart and soul.

5 out of 5 stars The VOICE is mesmerizing, and the tracks are stunning !.......2007-01-09

For so long now, Regina Belle has been hanging around just outside the big time, seemingly waiting for a break that has never quite happened. One listening to this album will leave you wondering 'why'.
She has never been commercial. and she will never want to be.

Regina is proof positive that she can provide not only multi-octave vocals but also deliver strong, innovative and diverse interpretations.
Then, of course, there is the voice.
And what a voice it is. You can really hear it develop and grow in maturity over the 8-year span of this album, moving from being an excellent, acclaimed R'n'B voice to one of the best contemporary soul/jazz performers in the world.
It seems there's very little that she's not capable of.

The only downside of this album is that, while it offers a good overview of the most popular offerings of Regina's career and some absolute gems , I don't feel that it really offers the best of her work.
All in one word, you will like this collection of brilliantly produced and performed songs which are classics of our time.
I would highly recommend this album to anyone who knows anything of Regina's work - and to anyone who doesn't.
A 2CD set would be very welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Music does not get better than this!.......2006-08-05

Regina Belle is one of those amazing singers who has been so stellar for so many years, but it was not until the massive success of the song "Baby Come To Me" that a wide audience was exposed to her magic. She never reached that pinacle again because her amazing appeal is not the fast food that most crave.

If you are a fan, I need not say anymore as I am preaching to the choir. If you happen to find this listing by error or because you were guided to it based on another purchase that you have made think of Regina as the very best of Anita, Patti (both LaBelle and Austin), Gladys but entirely original. Regina has a powerhouse vocal range that is so powerful yet equally stunning when quiet and controlled. She is a child of interpretative singers so that when she sings you listen as she tells you what she feels.

This package is the best that you'll find if you only want one release as it has all her most known/popular songs. I have bought most of her releases as her voice, like say a Luther Vandross, can move you and remind you of the power of music. While most who may not even have heard "Baby Come To Me" must have heard it least "A Whole New World" fromDisney's "Alladin" which is a great song but only skims the surface as songs like "If I Could", "This Is Love", "Make It Like It Was" and great remakes of "Didn't I" and Teddy's "Love TKO" really show you Regina's range. Many others have tried to tackle "Love TKO" (even Hall & Oates, who I really like) but Regina's version is the only one that I heard that stands out among the many who have taken a shot at it.

If you like big voices with masterful control, buy this without hesitation. 5 easily earned stars. Keep on singing Regina!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding in every way.......2006-06-02

Ah yes the soulful, jazzy sounds of Regina Belle

I happened to come across this cd on Amazon.com quite by accident. Having never heard of Regina Belle i did play some of the sound samples and loved everyone of them. After that I decided to purchase the CD. Every time I play it I like it just that much more.

Her voice reminds me a little of Billie Holiday with a helping of Dinah Washington, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight and Patti La belle thrown in. Soulful, powerful and beautiful vocal styling's all in one voice, amazing. It is very easy to get caught up in the emotion of the song that she is singing because she makes the songs so personal.

"Didn't I blow your mind". This is one of my favorite songs by the Stylistics and I didn't think that anyone could do it better and then I heard Regina Belle sing it and I was totally blown away, what an incredible voice and style.

Another one of my favorite songs is "Baby come to me" that is every bit as good as the Patti Austin/James Ingram version.

"Love TKO", Originally a Tedd Pendegrass composition, truly brought to life by Regina with the amazing power in her sweet voice.

My Favorite Aladdins Theme with Peabo Bryson, What a song what a voice what a duet. Absolutely astounding and beautiful.

Every song on this cd is a great listen. Both the production and engineering are done very well and serve to highlight Regina's style.

What we have here is fourteen great songs made better by the fact that Regina Belle is singing them. If you like the sound of a stunning female voice singing then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19

what can i say about the best of the best? As always, Miss Battle makes me wonder how anyone else would dare to sing this music after her rendition. A beautiful CD

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28

I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2003-12-07

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

3 out of 5 stars Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

5 out of 5 stars Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09

It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

4 out of 5 stars cd reviews.......2006-01-15

this cd was very good, much recommended

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

5 out of 5 stars Much Anticipated.......2007-01-26

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

5 out of 5 stars A Taste of Heaven.......2007-01-18

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

5 out of 5 stars The Energizer Bunny.......2007-01-18

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness, good pacing, and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

5 out of 5 stars Great Seasonal Album.......2006-01-16

This is one of the most impressive period albums I own. Wonderful for the holiday season. Will miss it during the rest of the year.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.

I am writing this review to share the joy with you!

Like Dawn Upshaw's The World So Wide on Nonesuch, this program is such an inviting cross section of American opera of the last 50 years, you wonder why more of it hasn't been recorded. Composers include Carlisle Floyd, Douglas Moore, Samuel Barber, and Gian Carlo Menotti, whose childlike "Monica's Waltz" from the otherwise lurid opera The Medium is a highlight. Old favorites are here, such as Gershwin's "Summertime." And new favorites, too: Andre Previn's forthcoming "A Streetcar Named Desire" graciously offers Straussian lushness and bitonal wind-instrument details suggesting Blanche DuBois's mind departing from reality, all sounding remarkably true to Previn's pre-World War II upbringing in Berlin. This dramatically alert arioso isn't so melodically memorable but makes all necessary dramatic points eloquently. Though she performs vividly throughout, Fleming often lets her vocal tone overwhelm articulation of the words--a middling drawback. And comedy is not her thing: Bernstein's "Glitter and Be Gay" is way too hammy. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars All-American Fun.......2007-01-01

I love this CD. It's so incredibly American. It features American lyric soprano Renee Fleming singing American opera arias. Ms. Fleming is capably accompanied by the Met orchestra, America's best opera orchestra, conducted by another distinguished American, Maestro James Levine. The only way this CD could be more American is if it were released on July 4th, with two baseball tickets included. I'm grateful that Decca made this release.

This CD starts out very strong with a gorgeous aria "I have dreamt" from "Wuthering Heights". I've never seen this opera nor heard of this opera. If the opera is half as good as the aria, I would love to see it. Renee cruises through "The Letter Song" from "The Ballad of Baby Doe" with heartfelt interpretation. "Monica's Waltz" is not one of my favorite arias in the world, but Ms. Fleming sings it beautifully.

Here's where we depart, and the reason I gave this CD only 4 stars. First, Renee sings two arias from "Porgy and Bess": "Summertime" and "My Man's Gone Now". Renee's voice is way too rich and lush for these arias. Listen to Renee sing it, then listen to the gold standard, Leontyne Price. You'll see what I mean. Renee's rendition of "My Man's Gone Now" was just way too pretty. The score calls for some extended glissandos, which are supposed to be wails of grief. Renee sang the glissandos beautifully, but no grief was in sight. Her next choice "Glitter and Be Gay" from "Candide" is just not a good choice for her. I think even Renee would tell you that a voice like hers is just not right for Cunegonde. This aria (and role) calls for a smaller voice. [...].

Then Renee reminds me of why I love her in the first place, by returning to two arias from "Susannah", a signature role for her. Her performances of "Ain't it a pretty night!" and "The trees on the mountains" are too good for words. She completely understands this role, and communicates the mood in these arias right through your speakers. Just imagine how good it must be live!

Renee closes with "No word from Tom" (The Rake's Progress), "He has come, he has come!" (Vanessa), and "I want magic! (A Streetcar Named Desire). I wish more opera companies would produce "The Rake's Progress". This is a wonderful opera by an "adopted" American composer, Igor Stravinsky. The aria from "Streetcar" is kind of an odd choice to close this CD, but Renee did premiere the role of Blanche in this Previn piece with the SF Opera. So maybe it's not so strange after all.

Highly recommended for fans of Renee Fleming, and those who need to add some good old American opera to round out their Puccini collections. This is a nice performance record by a woman surely destined to be one of the greatest lyric sopranos in history.

5 out of 5 stars A great listening pleasure. Better than some other selections.......2006-04-05

'I Want Magic' sung by superstar mezzo Renee Fleming, backed by James Levine and his Metropolitan Opera Orchestra follows the same pattern of severa of Fleming's other releases, in that there is one widely known and very familiar piece (Gershwin's 'Summertime' from 'Porgy and Bess') plus many less familiar pieces.

The theme of all the pieces is that they are arias from American operas, all in English. And, I get a lot more from this selection than I do from, for example, her recording of Shubert Lieder. One thing I learn is how totally typical is Leonard Bernstein's piece from 'Candide', which sounds like it stepped right out of a production of 'The Fantasticks'. Gershwin's two great songs, on the other hand, are icons of American music and even Herrmann's movie song from Wuthering Heights makes Bernstein's song sound ordinary.

But, the album is really all about Fleming's realization of these songs, which is simply nothing less than spectacular. While I tend to prefer hearing works 'in situ', Fleming's talent is so great that hearing her do eleven pieces out of context is worth it. The album is also more interesting than the average collection of Lieder in that it has the backing of a major American dramatic orchestra.

Better than average Fleming choice.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give more than 5 stars.......2005-09-30

This recording is truly wonderful! I really feel that American composers have written some incredible things. I think that American opera is much better than British opera, with the exception of Benjamin Britten. My favorites on this track are actually all of them, but if I had to choose, I would pick: "No word from Tom" (The Rakes Progress, Stravinsky), "Ain't it a pretty night" (Sussanah, Floyd), "Glitter and be Gay" (Candide, Bernstein), and my absolute favorite "Monica's Waltz" (The Medium, Menotti). This is such a great album. Some of Renee's diction isn't completely clear, but that's opera. In order to acheive a beautiful sound, especially in English, certain vowels need to be altered. ESPECIALLY for the soprano voice. When singing so high, certain vowels and consonants need to be altered a bit. Anyway, it's an incredible album!!

3 out of 5 stars This music needs a lot less diva.......2005-09-18

Renee Fleming has a glorious voice, and there's not a note here that isn't ravishing. Decca's engineers have caught the voice very well, and Levine's conducting is all it could be. The problem? Well, having her sing Summertime and My Man's Gone NOw was a bad idea, not only because both are cliches. Felming has a hard time sounding emotionally natural. She tends to apply her incredible voice with diva-like self-consciousness and play-acted emotion far too often.

Which means that her CD recitals are hit-and-miss. Glitter and Be Gay is a disaster here because she tries to be funny and winds up being self-conscious and embarrassing. But the big aria form Susannah, a role Fleming sings at the Met, is perfect. I expected a lot more adventurousness from this American collection, since Felming is, after all, an American singer. But it's mostly overplayed, like Puccini in English, sobs and all. I enjoyed the voice, but after a while the mannerisms became tiresome.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing American opera to the forefront.......2005-01-20

American opera is not as well-known to many people because it can be complex, both musically and dramatically, and requires amazing vocal technique to sing things that sound simple. Fleming's recording highlights some familiar arias (the Susannah arias, for example) as well as some that are almost unknown. If you are an opera fan, and especially if you want to learn more about American opera, this CD is a great place to start. My favorite: Glitter and Be Gay, from Bernstein's Candide. Wow.

5 out of 5 stars Brand-new Christmas music from the Tabernacle Choir!.......2004-09-20

This brand-new recording of Christmas music from the Tabernacle Choir is marvellous. Recorded on their own "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, this is the choir's first recording of seasonal music, and it surpasses any previous holiday release that the choir has made.

Using the music of both John Rutter and the arrangements of Mack Wilberg, "Sing Choirs of Angels" enjoys a wonderful flow from track to track: from the propulsive "Fum, Fum, Fum" to the sublimely meditative "What Sweeter Music"; from the majestic "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" to a brand new music and lyric setting of the gentle "Still, Still, Still" there is something here for everyone. Listening to this recording brings a warm holiday spirit into my heart and home.

Recorded in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, and using the versatile Orchestra at Temple Square, the choir and orchestra sound luminous and warm; these new recordings truly are miles above anything the Choir has done before - the polish and feeling that they bring to these new recordings are stunning.

The booklet that accompanies the CD is beautiful as well, with full color photographs of traditional Christmas symbols, full lyrics, track by track commentary, and a glossary of what each Christmas symbol means. This is a quality gift to give to friends and neighbors to help usher in the Christmas season. Unreservedly recommended.

This is a formidable collection of lullabies, spanning 500 years, 18 of them (from almost as many countries) in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Catalan, English, and more, each one lovely, each one in its own idiom. Some are anonymous; others are by composers as different as Byrd, Mussorgsky, Milhaud, and Arvo Pärt. The disc shouldn't be listened to in one setting--no matter how interesting they are, they're still lullabies and can mellow the listener into torpor--but in three-or-so chunks, the contents are fascinating. Figueras can make her sound move from folk to classical, from a mother who is passionate about her child's safety to one who merely wants to entertain into slumber. The anonymous Greek lullaby (track 3) contains the oddest little vocal quirk--a whipping up of the tone at the close of some phrases--which only an artist like Figueras could pull off. And Savall and soloists accompany on various instruments--flute, harp, viols, etc.--with pianist Paul Badura-Skoda playing on three of the lullabies. The CD is a wonderful tour of the world through the centuries with only one subject in mind: sleep. And sleep is something, after all, that takes up a third of our lives. This CD keeps getting sweeter the more you listen. Recommended. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite gem of a desert island CD.......2005-06-09

Every time I catch sight of a Vox Alia CD with its distinctive packaging I find resistance is futile and I end up buying it. This gorgeous collection of lullabies delivered much more than I had ever dreamt possible.

What gives this CD its magic is the fact that this is music making amongst friends and family. In fact the record label is Jordi Savall's own, Monserat Figueras is his wife, and Arianna Savall his daughter - so it really is an all family affair. The whole of Hesperion XXI play like they know each other intimately and we are just privileged eavesdroppers who were lucky enough to have overheard them. If some of the major record labels are increasingly marketing their music like MacDonalds hamburgers then this is like being invited to dine at a lovely family run Spanish restaurant. There is a heartwarming homeliness here the majors could never emulate in a hundred years. So it is entirely appropriate that this should be a collection of lullabies, for this is a celebration of family intimacy of the most deeply poetic and affectionate kind.

The selection of music might strike a casual listener as being unusual - exotic is a better term - yet they are all so instantly attractive that I think this would make a lovely gift (especially given the beautiful booklet that comes with it) to a child, a mother, a partner, a friend, a music lover; even people who know nothing about the composers here would surely be enchanted. I was particularly delighted by the reviewer who wrote that her daughter listened to this at night - oh, how fortunate it would be to grow up with music like this with its imaginatively chosen collection of music from so many countries and centuries - you would carry this music in your heart for the rest of your life! Amongst the songs is a Greek song, a Catalan song, a 16th century English song, a song by William Byrd, Max Reger, Moussorgsky as well as two by Arvo Part, both of which carry dedications to Monserat Figueras, Arianna and Jordi Savall (in the photograph reproductions of the first pages of the handwritten score Arvo Part has written in German 'gewidmet an...' if you were wondering where this info comes from).

Typical of the CD is how difficult it is to hold back a tear listening to Reger of all composers - I would have never thought it possible, especially when it would have been simply all too easy to choose some all to well known Schubert Lied, but here it is, they have picked Reger and it is PERFECT. Yet that is only one gem amongst so many more here. I am speechless, for this CD is indeed a rare treasure made for people who truly love beautiful music making - a CD to cherish and to weep for joy over.

I should add that as usual from Vox Alia the recorded sound is audiophile quality, and a notch above what you get from about 95% of record labels. In my opinion they even surpass some boutique audiophile labels like Linn, which is really saying something. So if you love to luxuriate in rich sound this will fit like a glove.

If you fall in love with this recording please, please may I suggest you BUY it for someone you love, rather than burning it, just as a way of saying 'thank you' to this family of musicians. This is a family run label rather than some huge impersonal coorporation and I have seen too many private boutique record firms go bust over the years, so please help ensure that these artists continue to make lovely recordings such as this one.

I am adding this CD to my desert island collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeping, seductive, and superlative!.......2004-01-14

Figueras offers the listener a triumphant collection of evocative songs. Let's dispense with a possible concern. This CD is sub-titled "Lullabies". Anyone going to sleep listening to Figueras should see either a hearing or a brain specialist. While they may pacify children, adult listeners will be exhilarated by the sweeping range of her voice and exquisite presentation. Figueras' expressive style simply transcends descriptive praise. From soaring appeals to the heavens to quiet, soothing reassurances, she demonstrates the magnitude of her evocative skills. One can sense constrained passion in each song as she moves from one culture to another through the collection. That one of the pieces was commissioned for this collection is further proof of the extent she provides the listener - she's not confined to neither time nor place.

What is most clearly manifest in this musical anthology is Figueras' professionalism and her Catalan background. Unlike the operatic divas who have deigned to release popular renditions, she demonstrates how someone who truly understands the music of mountain villages or plains communities in any nation can elevate even the most "common" music. The selections range over five centuries or more, reinforcing the impression that nothing exceeds the capacity of her elegant voice to convey feeling to the enraptured listener. Each of us will likely settle on a favourite selection. Predictably, my own is a Catalan piece of an anonymous composer. Perhaps because the lullaby is in her native tongue, the richness of Figueras' rendition evokes intense emotional response. Would that i'd been born a Catalan!

Alia Vox was launched to give fresh impetus to the recordings of Figueras, her husband Jordi Savall and the groups they have created together. This CD will remain a testimony to their efforts to produce the highest quality discs. The sound is excellent, clearly imparting voice and background instruments alike. With 18 selections from a variety of eras and locations, the notes for this CD are extensive. The text of each tune is given in the original and seven other languages. Could scholarship and the universality of music be given finer endorsement? [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing music for the heart.......2003-10-18

Rarely has there been a more beautiful collection of lullabies than those presented in Ninna Nanna. Clearly a labour of love of Montserrat Figueras and her family, it brings together songs that mothers have been singing to their infants over the centuries - whatever their culture or language. "It is like food for the young child" reflects Montserrat Figueras in her dedication, the most intense reflection of affection and tenderness.

Lullabies in this collection, come from cultural backgrounds as diverse as Russia, Morocco, Greece, England and, of course, the Iberian Peninsula. They span from the Renaissance to contemporary music. Most of the musical versions have been masterly arranged by Jordi Savall, suited to fit the extraordinary voice of his wife. We also find some arrangements by well-known composers such as Moussorgski, Reger or de Falla.

Being lullabies, the songs show similarities: above all their tunes are beautifully soft and melodious. Yet, the tunes show considerable diversity in rhythm and tonality. Some are melancholy and almost haunting, others joyful and jubilant. Montserrat Figueras' voice is, as always, in a class of her own, radiating with richness and intensity. The music touches the deeper cords in the listener's consciousness. Her voice is superbly and sensitively accompanied by Hesperion XXI, the accomplished team of musicians under the leadership of Jordi Savall.

The informative booklet accompanying the CD is well presented and includes the songs' texts in eight languages, including the original. This is a CD you will not get tired to listen to many times, whether you play it for your children, your family and friends, or just for yourself. [Friederike Knabe, Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars La Ninna Nanna.......2003-08-17

Very few times in life we can be transported back to share such deep experiences as that of holding a child in your arms while singing a lullaby. This CD is exceptional not only because of the high quality of the production but also by the deep emotions that each song carries. A true gift for all those of us that need to stop and enjoy a moment of peace!

5 out of 5 stars "Stunningly beautiful" is an understatement.......2003-05-31

I bought this as a gift for our daughter, and it works great; but I also can't stop listening to it myself day and night, having nothing to do with her bedtime and nap times. If one wants to go to sleep, it works beautifully for that; or if one wants to stay up and pay attention to every wonderful nuance, it also works for that. Or if it's just on as background music, it changes any room to a place of comfort and home. Montserrat Figueras here sings in at least twelve different languages, in music spanning 500 years, and puts it all across with heartfelt directness. What more difficult musical task could there be than all the above, together? But she does it.

This disc is really a family affair: Figueras and Savall, plus their daughter who also sings and plays, and their son who took the photos; plus their friends and colleagues, among the most imaginative and soulful players alive. Extraordinary. And the new music composed by Arvo Part for this album: it's proof that music can objectively make a person weep.

And the booklet: a gorgeous presentation with full background information, photos of the sessions, and each song is given in translation to eight or nine languages! (The original, plus eight more translations if different.)

The only thing you can't do is play this in the car, while driving around to lull the child with the motion. Oh, that works great for the child, but it's the driver's concentration we should be worried about. There is no way to keep one's mind safely on the road while this CD is on.

I rarely give a "five star" rating to anything, but this is one of those times.

5 out of 5 stars WOW - one of the best !!!.......2006-11-08

What a great album - fun arrangements, beautiful harmonies. This is one of the best Christmas albums I have heard or bought in a long time. "Gloria" will be one of my favorite tracks from now on. This album is all I expected and more. If you love Christmas music then you need this album.

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2006-09-23

I have been a progressive Hard rock heavy metal singer for over 19 years. I am a lover of harmonies no matter what instrument is doing them. I first heard this album (specifically the song African Gloria) while browsing in Yankee Candle's "Black forest" room. I was moved by that song and I still am when I hear the clip now. I immediately ordered it. What I can say is that these kids are not doing any easy tasks...I am a singer and I know what it takes to get the harmonies and dynamics what they are. I give them 2 thumbs up and urge them to always continue. Childrens choirs are wonderful and in my opinion spark a Holy part of us. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars This cd is simply PERFECT!.......2005-12-13

My husband and I opened this cd and played it for the first time tonight. It was like hearing a choir of angels. I am dead serious when I say that I have NEVER heard voices as beautiful as the Von Trapp children. I have just orded two more of their cd's, and I intend to order everything they record. DO NOT miss this one. It is an absolute gem!
