Fifty years after a 21-year-old Elvis Presley first shook the world comes a reissue of the famed Million Dollar Quartet recording, the off-the-cuff Sun Records jam session where Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash joined Presley for a loose-jointed romp through 46 songs. Except that's not quite right--Cash either put down his part off-mic or rolled out his big baritone-bass when the tape wasn't rolling (the more likely explanation). So that, as Colin Escott writes in his liner notes, technically makes this a $750,000 Trio. And while this new edition is billed as the "complete" quartet--since 12 more minutes surfaced on a tape of superior sound quality found in Elvis's private collection, and the session is now in its right sequence--it obviously isn't the whole thing. (The 12 extra minutes are essentially four short instrumentals and "Reconsider Baby" at the start, as well as bits and pieces at different points throughout the CD.) But what survives is nevertheless fascinating, of course, not only for the historical record but for the fervor the three bring to a handful of spirituals (their finest moment) and how young Presley--who is already recording for RCA, and has just been dropped by Sun--presents himself. His new notoriety brings out a cocky charm, as he devotes much of these renditions of "Don't Be Cruel" and "Paralyzed" to an imitation of Jackie Wilson imitating him (Elvis knows Wilson only as one of Billy Ward's Dominoes), and boasting that Pat Boone recorded a song that Elvis wouldn't even audition. This fly-on-the-wall voyeurism should appeal to any student of rock 'n' roll history. But serious Elvisphiles will especially enjoy hearing Presley talk about the seeds of recording "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," mimic Hank Snow on "I'm Gonna Bid My Blues Goodbye," and express bemused ire over Faron Young, who had sent him a song ("Is It So Strange") he hoped Elvis would record. "He didn't want to give me none of it--he wanted it all, you know," Elvis says with a chuckle, supposedly referring to the publishing/writing credit, something Elvis's manager, the iron-fisted Colonel Tom Parker, demanded. As the trio moves through a plethora of material--Christmas songs, gospel, blues, R&B, country, pop, Dixieland, cowboy, and bluegrass--they become the hammer, anvil, and steel, forging a new form of music. What you have here, then, is no less than the sound of it, taking shape. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Million Dollar Quartet.......2007-03-12

It was a gift for my husband, and he likes it very much.

3 out of 5 stars Johnny Knew.......2007-02-27

Johnny Cash wrote about these recordings in his 1970's autobiography "Man In Black". He thought the recordings were lost, or locked in a vault somewhere. I know that Johnny is on this cd, you can hear him singing bass quite lowly on "Farther Along"(listen closely).

5 out of 5 stars Raw Nostalgia, like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls of Music!.......2007-02-16

I'm a Keyboard Player and a 33 year Musician, and an Elvis fan! A devoted follower of Jerry Lew Lewis and ALL the Sun Family. Sam Philips was smart enough to put an open mic in the room when this Jam Session happened. Elvis sings like he's in church on Sunday morning, wit so much feeling. Jerry Lee can't be lost no matter how many times Elvis switches songs. He grew up the same way.Carl Perkins thumbstyles that Guitar like the Lead Man he was! They stop and start, like it was all for fun (which it was). No formed up songs, no perfect clean things, Just raw gospel and country with a Rockabilly flair. I swear I didn't know these tapes existed, and I'm a music history idiot. Thank you for selling them amazon!! Any Elvis fan needs this one!! BUY IT!!

4 out of 5 stars Elvis and Old Pals.......2007-01-15

This was an excellent review of the past. It brought back a lot of memories. Anyone who is an Elvis Fan will not want to be without it.

Most of the CD is inaudible. No evidence that Johnny Cash was even there. Save your money! Don't purchase this product!!

Spanning the punk and garage rock globe--from snot-nosed trailer-park kid fronting the legendary Stooges to universal pop culture icon and influential granddaddy of punk--the career of Iggy Pop has reached its fifth decade, and this remastered 37-track, chronologically sequenced set has been christened to hold us over while we wait for the definitive box set. Commencing with "1969," "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" from the Stooges' trailblazing debut album, the first disc provides a ringside seat to the band's keg-of-dynamite demise Raw Power ("Search and Destroy," "Gimme Danger," and the title track, though omitting the spellbinding "Shake Appeal"), the David Bowie-led Pop restoration ("Nightclubbing," "China Girl") and Iggy's solo pinnacle ("Lust for Life," "The Passenger"). While the second CD is patchy (spotting synthesizers for guitars too often) and erratic (missing notable songs from the Soldier and Party albums), it does include duets with Debbie Harry ("Well Did you Evah") and the B-52s Kate Pierson ("Candy"), 1993 live versions of the Stooges "TV Eye" and "Loose," and the first Stooges studio partnership in 30 years, "Skull Ring." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE GODFATHER OF PUNK THAT HAS DONE IT ALL! .......2007-07-09

I will be writing a review on the legendary 2-CD anthology compilation album entitled "A MILLION IN PRIZES, IGGY POP, THE ANTHOLOGY" by one of Rock's all-time greatest Punk Rockers ever. I give you one of America's pride and joy's and one of Muskegon, Michigan's favorite sons, I-G-G-Y P-O-P! This legendary compilation album was originally released in 2005 on a 2-CD set on the Virgin Records label in association with EMI Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

JAMES (JIM) NEWELL OSTERBERG A.K.A. IGGY POP will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for not just composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest sacred anthems ever, but for his stage antics and raw energy he displays and delivers while he's on stage. Even IGGY'S legendary stage wardrobe's are the real stuff that is made of Rock legend. IGGY POP without a doubt would join the ranks of ALICE COOPER and DAVID BOWIE when it came to giving a real Rock n' Roll stage show. When Iggy's on stage, he like a man possessed and does things on stage that not even THE SEX PISTOLS' Johnny Rotten would even dare to do. IGGY POP will also forever be remembered for being the true genuine original GODFATHER OF PUNK. IGGY POP was performing Punk Rock long before THE RAMONES, THE SEX PISTOLS or even THE CLASH came around on the scene. These legendary bands would indeed owe a great deal of respect and gratitude to IGGY especially since IGGY wrote the rules as to how a frontman or frontwoman would conduct his or herself on stage. Everything that you can possibly ever imagine a frontman doing on stage, believe me when I say to all of you today that IGGY has done it all and beyond. Extraordinary examples are witnessing IGGY deeply cut himself all over his chest with a blade while he has this incredible way of lunging forward and falling on his chest and at the same time, grab the bottom of the microphone without hitting or bashing his head on the floor. If you were to see IGGY in action, you would never believe it. IGGY POP has been recording and releasing great albums along with entertaining sell-out audiences the world over with his spectacular stage shows since 1969. His most memorable band is THE STOOGES with whom he originally gained his worldwide fame and stage reputation as a Punk Rocker to be dealt with. Which now brings me to this legendary anthology album I'm about to review for all of you today. "A MILLION IN PRIZES, IGGY POP, THE ANTHOLOGY" chronicles and highlights the many hit songs that IGGY POP delivered to world throughout his incredible career. In my opinion, this legendary anthology album is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary frontman that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This album is the tales in the life and times of IGGY POP, his music is his story that speaks for itself.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS MUSIC SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD! It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of IGGY POP to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically as IGGY truly intended for it to be listened to and heard. "A MILLION IN PRIZES, IGGY POP, THE ANTHOLOGY" from 2005 begins on DISC ONE with the explosive a*s kicking Punk Rocker "1969," the static guitar blasting and a*s kicking Punk Rocker "No Fun," the reverbing whining guitar and a*s kicking Punk Rocker "I Wanna Be Your Dog," the blistering Punk Rocker "Down On The Street," the merciless a*s kicking Punk Rocker "I Got A Right," the incredible and limitless energetic a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Gimme Some Skin," the slow teaser that erupts into a fast a*s kicking Rock n' Roll explosion unimaginable, "I'm Sick Of You," the breathtaking a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Search And Destroy," the amazing acoustic turned electric a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Gimme Danger," another a*s kicking blistering Punk Rocker "Raw Power," the extraordinary a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Kill City," the slow synthesized special effects Punk Rocker "Nightclubbing," the synthesized a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Funtime," the a*s kicking Punk Rockin' version that was also recorded by DAVID BOWIE, "China Girl," the slow but powerful Punk Rocker "Sister Midnight," the slow turned fast paced synthesized Punk Rocker "Tonight," the loud a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Success," the vibrant a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Lust For Life" and the groundbreaking Punk Rocker "The Passenger." END OF DISC ONE.

DISC TWO begins right where DISC ONE left off with the a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Some Weird Sin," the incredible sounding Punk Rocker "I'm Bored," the in your face Punk Rocker "I Need More," the 50's sounding a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Pleasure," the dark sounding Punk Rocker "Run Like A Villian," the synthesized BOWIE sounding Punk Rocker "Cry For Love," the forever IGGY POP stamped trademark synthesized Punk Rock anthem "Real Wild Child (Wild One)," the explosive a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Cold Metal," the mind blowing a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Home," the beautifully slow smooth turned fast paced Punk Rocker sung with KATE PIERSON, "Candy," the upbeated a*s kicking Punk Rocker sung with Deborah Harry, "Well, Did You Evah!," the merciless a*s kicking Punk Rocker "Wild America," the blistering previously unreleased a*s kicking live version of "T.V. Eye," another a*s kicking previously unreleased live version of "Loose," the beautifully slow electric acoustic turned slow electric Punk Rocker "Look Away," the tough and rugged Punk Rocker "Corruption," the slow and mysterious mild Punk Rocker performed with MEDESKI MARTIN + WOOD, "I Felt The Luxury," the bass pounding and a*s kicking electric Punk Rocker "Mask" and the unbelieveable a*s kicking DAVID BOWIE sounding Punk Rock anthem "Skull Ring." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that all of the musicians that backed up IGGY and contributed their unique style and blend of music during these incredible recording sessions were performing to their fullest potential and beyond their call of duty. IGGY's lead vocals were nothing but incredible. Listening to all of these legendary hit songs, IGGY's voice has a rare blend of Mick Jagger and David Bowie. IGGY'S vocals were definitely on fire while laying down the vocal tracks during all of these recording sessions. I have to commend them all on a great job well done.

I would like to highly recommend this legendary anthology album for everyone of all ages to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You may also want to research further into and check out the many other IGGY POP greatest hits compilation albums as well as his previously released studio albums. In doing this, you will have found the ultimate album that is right for you and suits your music tastes and needs. You will also realize that you have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal IGGY POP music collection. If possible, you should also check out IGGY POP'S live concert performances on DVD, it will leave you breathless. You can do all of your researches and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.

In closing, IGGY POP has successfully continued in releasing great albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. IGGY POP has bluntly acknowledged that he will do ANYTHING on stage just to grab the audience's attention. IGGY'S fans adore him for it and displays their very own approval in the audience as a result. When you think about it, its the fans that keep IGGY POP breathing and carrying on living. The fans flow through IGGY POP's blood and veins resulting in IGGY to show his true emotions on stage. IGGY POP LOVES AND NEEDS THE STAGE. With this in mind, it is safe to say that IGGY POP is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. And because of this, IGGY POP has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten. Knowing IGGY, he's still not about ready to rest on his laurels just yet. There will also be many new tales and stories in the IGGY POP legend and legacy that would still need to be told and written in many pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you Jim, A.K.A Iggy. Thanks for the great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. IGGY POP RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Creative Anger Followed By Regular Anger.......2006-11-15

Disc one exposes a man who could shift with the best of them: His Stooges days are marked by wild proto-punk riffery mixed with the most cantakerous nihilist lyrics this side of 1976. Fantastic. The latter portion of the disc sees our man taking a trip with Bowie, a trip where synths plod along within the most vacous soundscapes this side of dub. The legacy of drugs looms in the content of these tracks, and the clash of Iggy's vocal delivery and the atmospherics is unique indeed. A triump.

Disc 2 is revelry smothered by cliches. The first few tracks on the disc have homogenous production values that make all the songs sorta blend into each other. The cod-Bill Idol phase (from the Blah Blah Blah album) is rather amusing, since the slick production makes Iggy seem like the glossiest rebel ever (and that's not a bad thing). After that, however, tracks like Cold Metal and the like reveal a complacency characterized by yelling over the most contribed riffs. Nothing special. The latter tracks share one thing: bloody awful production values. These sound like they were recorded in a Third World radio station's maintenace closet in 1965. At least the live tracks (re-hashes of Fun House tunes) revive the raw aggression of the Stooges.

I'd say that forking over the extra dough to get this set, when you could get the one disc compilation, seems rather extreme. Just get the 1996 compilation and then buy all three Stooges albums. If you're really curious, get Iggy's late 70s albums and Blah Blah Blah. And that's about it. It's not plausible that you'll be tempted to delve into most of his 90s work.

4 out of 5 stars Disc One -- Indispensable; Disc Two--Dullsville.......2006-11-10

"A Million in Prizes," like other two-disc compilations by acts like The Fall, Devo and The Damned, features an essential first disc with Iggy Pop at the peak of his powers (with the Stooges, James Williamson and David Bowie). Featuring remastered versions of the Stooges best songs plus the remixed songs from "Raw Power," this stuff is blood-curdling, head-banging rock n' roll of the highest caliber. Topping it off are newly cleaned up versions of Iggy's pre-hardcore classics "I Got a Right," "Gimme Some Skin" and "I'm Sick of You." This material is followed by the best songs from his first and best two solo albums, "The Idiot" and "Lust for Life." Once again an improvement over "Nude and Rude," the previous official Iggy best-of, this disc features "Success," a wonderful, unheralded cut from the latter album. Then ... there's disc two. It starts off solidly with a holdover from "Lust for Life," "Some Weird Sin," and the best cut off his underrated "New Values" album, "I'm Bored." Even "I Need More" is listenable, as Iggy's voice is still thunderous and convincing. After that, however, Iggy's records fall victim to bad 80s production and a seeming complacency on his part. "Real Wild Child (Wild One)" represents Iggy at his most commercial ... something akin to David Bowie's "Let's Dance" album, only much less satisfying. Despite the dropoff in quality, Iggy's energy and commitment to musicmaking is praiseworthy, making "A Million in Prizes" an essential part of any respectable music fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Million in Prizes: The Anthology.......2006-05-05

A Million in Prizes: The Anthology~ Iggy Pop is an amazing anthology collection from an icon in the rock industry and rock music history. Iggy Pop has surprisingly good vocals, the lyrics are not as simple as one would have like thought they would be. I must admit that I only heard Lust for life and to be even more honest I had no idea that this song was written by Pop and Bowie. I love the photos in the book-let and the cover photo is vintage Pop at his best. I was a bit ticked of that they had not included the lyrics for the songs in the otherwise amazing book-let. This is a compilation that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Pop Rocks.......2006-03-22

While A Million In Prizes offers little for those who've kept an eye on James Osterberg's career since the days of The Psychedelic Stooges, as a five decade overview of the leathery Detroit legend it completely eclipses the hits packages that precede it. Whether it's garage rock, glam, punk or even Berlin cabaret, Iggy Pop has kept at the top of his game via reinvention, clever allegiances and simple survival.
Roughly divided up into the four eras of Stooges-fronting, Bowie-befriending, 1980s commerciality and 1990s icon(oclast), the double disc package A Million In Prizes fulfils the obligation of presenting Iggy as an enigmatic, genre-hopping artist whose successes have been often down to savvy collaborations. Early Stooges tracks Search And Destroy and 1969 set the bar high for where the trailer park kid could go, but after The Stooges' 1973 post-Raw Power split, the helping hands of David Bowie, Jimmy Webb and even members of The Sex Pistols assisted Pop in his sonic travels. Early solo track Nightclubbing, the slamming beat of Lust For Life and the amusing Iggy drawl of I'm Bored show an artist keen on probing styles far removed from the primordial rock sounds he'd worked on with The Stooges only a few years before.
While Bowie's shadow looms large at the midpoint of this collection during the pair's Berlin recording period, by the time of his 1980s chart successes with Real Wild Child and the Steve Jones co-write Cry For Love, Pop had shown he was no mere pet project for Bowie. With the beautiful Candy (surely the single of 1990, if not the greatest duet ever), the Debbie Harry allegiance Well, Did You Evah? and the neatly cyclical reformation of The Stooges for Skull Ring, A Million In Prizes complements Iggy's sizeable manhood by being a similarly lengthy and exciting package. Here comes Johnny Yen again - rest assured, Pop rocks.

She has already jammed with Gladys Knight in Las Vegas, eloped with influential R&B mogul R. Kelly, and scored two platinum albums--and she's just barely graduated from high school. No, she is not your average teenager, nor is she just another pretty soul singer. On One in a Million, Aaliyah expands on the smooth grooves of her massively successful debut album Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, and shows that all the life experiences have not gone to waste. The production and songwriting talents of Tim 'Timbaland' Mosley and rapper Missy Elliot give the songs on One In A Million a seductive edge with laidback grooves and cool hip-hop licks; but what really makes this album rise above is the full-grown singer at the controls. On the title track, a magical ballad, Aaliyah casts a cool spell with layered voices and a smoky delivery. With the assistance of Slick Rick, she turns Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" into a funky hip-hop jam for the end of the millennium. While with "4 Page Letter," one of the album's high points, she intricately details the end of love affair. Artists twice her age could only hope to create a work of such clarity and resonance. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars An Album That Defines An Era.......2007-03-30

The year was 1996, Urban R&B and Hip Hop had really gone from being in the backround with Gangsta Rap and New Jack Swing to the top of the mainstream charts with a more commercial sound that appealed for a broader audience. Blackstreet, Mary J Blige, Fugees, R. Kelly and Puff Daddy. Aaliyah was 17 at the time and almost about to graduate from highschool. She already had one album in her bag "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" produced and written by R. Kelly that she also ended up marrying, but since she was underage the marraige was shortly annuled and they both went seperate ways. On Aaliyah's second album titled "One In A Million" she teamed up with a bunch of diffrent producers, which was quite rare at the time. Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins and the completely unknown producer Timothy Mosley, better known as Timbaland. Mosley had previously worked with Missy Elliott's band "Sista" but with limited resources and not much success. He and Missy (who hadn't released her debut album yet) teamed up together and wrote/produced 7 of the songs of Aaliyah's second album. The result would be revolutionary and differ from anything that was on the radio at the time. Timbaland created a unique sound that would take R&B closer to mainstream with "stuttering bass-heavy bounce beats offset resounding high-end synth stabs" and often making cameos on his productions but no sampling, everything was created by himself. All this was known simply as the "Timbaland Sound" and 10 years later he would not only be a super-producer but the greatest procucer of his generation. Aaliyah had also matured, at only 17 she sound much older and experienced and she's was now a complete singer that can stand on her own feet and the overall result is a more satisfying effort then her debut. It's also fulpacked with hits, apart from the wonderful title track produced by Timbaland, he also produced the hits "Hot Like Fire", "If Your Girl Only Knew" and "4 Page Letter". A Diane Warren penned ballad called "The One I Gave My Heart To" reached top 10 on the charts. Other then that, we'll also find some fine remakes, like Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" with old skool rapper Slick Rick and Isley Brothers "Choosey Lover", later used by R.Kelly and Nas for a remix for "Street Dreams" and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkin's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" and Dupri's "I Gotcha Back". Intro and Outro included you get 17 songs of class and depth, and that is more then anyone could ask for, especially from someone so young. "One in A Million" is equally good as her third eponymous album and should end up in any music fan's collection. Sadly Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001 and the music world lost one of the most talented, beautiful and charismatic singers and I often wonder what she would have amount to in the future, it really looked so bright for her. Looking back 10 years in time I can clearly say that this album was something above the ordinary. R&B came closer to mainstream music, production was starting to have a bigger impact in music and Aaliyah made the best R&B album of the year together with Ginuwine's "The Bachelor" that was produced by...You know who.

Rest in peace Aaliyah.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Having scored massive USA college and independent station airplay and a video in rotation on MTV Europe and Japan, and having been dubbed a Myspace.com "Artist Of The Week," the Pinker Tones, a Barcelona-based electronica duo, are gaining adherents the world over. On their second album, the cheeky, musically larcenous duo incorporate everything from hot-wired, Super Fly-esque 1970s soul and muscle-headed but endearingly fluffy hip-hop to organ-glazed, beat-trussed bossa nova, with lyrics in English, French, German, and Spanish. "Piccolisima Descarga," 33 seconds of Kraftwerk-like mecho-madness (a relapse occurs during "Maybe Next Saturday"), feeds into "In Pea We Nuts," a wah-wah-frosted instrumental Barry White would have loved. "Pink Freud" reveals what the Beatles might have sounded like if they were still living in Hamburg during The White Album. "Love Tape," with its Ian Anderson-like lead flute, is both intricate and studiedly silly, while "Pinkerland Becaina" is a faux-tropical hallucination. Mister Furia (Salvador Rey) and Professor Manso (Alex Llovet) obviously have a fondness for hand percussion and retro, comparatively cumbersome sonic technologies like the Moog synthesizer and Theremin. But the way they employ them is as new as yesterday seemed while it was happening yet as old as tomorrow will feel the day after. Seductively disorienting, the tunes caress the ear and galvanize the hips like kaleidoscopic sequences of multi-culti déjà vu. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Truly a color revolution.......2007-05-09

If you like funky dance music then, this is the CD for you. The Pinker Tones' Color Revolution is a wonderfully fun collection of music. It is an album you will certainly be humming long after you've played it or, jumping up to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars really impressive.......2007-01-10

I am really enjoying this CD. I love the broad range of musical styles that the Pinker Tones employ on this record. "Karma Hunters" has been influenced by punk, while "Welcome to TMCR" has a 70s soul feel. Many of the songs are infused with electro-pop-hooks, and are incredibly catchy...I find myself trying to sing along, even though there is one song each in French, Spanish, and German. I'm looking forward to hearing more work from this band.

5 out of 5 stars Infectious.........2006-08-17

..and fun and definitely worth a listen. The guys are having a blast and it really rubs off. There are songs that you'll be humming all day like Karma Hunters and L'Heros and you can't help but smile listening to Pink Freud. Can't wait for their next album.

5 out of 5 stars Great electronica for eclectic tastes.......2006-06-21

I heard about the Pinker Tones on a podcast some time ago, and from that moment I knew I had to get this album. If you dig that kind of retro-loungey, kitschy electro-pop sound from bands like Ursula 1000, Pizzicato Five, Titan, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Kinky and the like, you have to get this CD too. TPT gives a try at everything they can get their hands on - from bossa nova to breaks to space age pop-infused disco beats sparkled with a big heap of orchestral and talk samples for good measure. Depending on how eclectic your taste is, you may either find this album as a weird mix of offbeat tracks, or a perfectly good mélange of songs sharing a common kitsch-pop feel, which I can live perfectly with.

5 out of 5 stars Great all round music.......2006-04-11

I first found this group on my space and I admired one of the members photography and just for the heck of it clicked on some of their songs and they were really good. They are very open minded, unique individuals and you can hear that in their music.

As the godfather of modern-day turntablism, Qbert has been long overdue for a solo release. Wave Twisters is the obvious brainchild of Qbert's long-term fascination with sound and its malleability: using stacks of eclectic vinyl as his fodder, Qbert creates an album of songs by turning scraps of found sound into everything from rhythm sections to melodic tracks to quirky pieces of dialogue. You don't need to understand the technical complexities of scratching to appreciate it; Wave Twisters is simply the future of the funk--sonic play transformed by an equal mix of aural insanity and genius and put all back together by the hands of a master. --Oliver Wang

Album Description

DJQBert's Wave Twisters (Classic Cassette Tape) - The classic that spawned the movie.

" As you may know by now, this album is a concept album. Not only in story but in things I wanted to do in music as well. I wanted to have a variety of songs offering new and different things from skratch styles, to ways of composing, to ideas that people can make something new out of. At the same time, keeping its story line"

- Qbert

5 out of 5 stars Qbert is dA ish............2006-08-01

Dj qbert < one of the greatest if not the greatest scracth dj of all times.

5 out of 5 stars what hasn't already been said??.......2005-01-29

Altough this album came out many years ago, the choas and organized madness that layers this piece still overwhelm even the most hardcore of tablist heads. even to those outside of the scratch community in the more "public music" mindset that appriciate it for the concept album that it is may still not understand the audio of the album unless they accompany that with the dvd film that was spawned by the album. This cd is....for lack of a better comparison, hip hops "Tommy", its "Rocky Horror Picture Show", or even "the Wall" to really praise this piece. To say it so few words, this is not a hip-hop concept album. but rather, it is THE hip-hop EPIC.

3 out of 5 stars DJ Qbert's frenzied scratchfest.......2004-04-14

Fan's of turntablism and speaker shredding scratching will enjoy this CD. 'Wave Twisters' is a scratchfest cavalcade, similar to the turntablist ferocity of 'Live at Future Primitive Sound Session' by Cut Chemist. Hypnotic, trancelike, with spine-chilling beats. The samples are minimal, but maintain soulful, almost tribal-like pulsating rhythms, somewhat like NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton'. The scratches aurally bombard you from all angles, almost like spread-out laser-beams echoing in the dark. It's amazing how something relatively stripped-down can sound so powerful and dense. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars HIP HOP THAT SHAKES YOUR BRAINSTEM.......2003-12-10

This album rocks intensely, to say the very least. Buy it. It will make all your hip hop dreams come true and destroy any hopes you had of becoming the world's greatest dj in one listen.

5 out of 5 stars He's the Man!!.......2003-03-02

By far one of the most technically and musically talented dj's so far! Always ten steps ahead of the rest of the turntablist world. This can only be said about only so few dj's out there, It's been said to never show this man whatever scratch or new technique you've invented, 'cuz he'll take what you've invented and re-invent it and make it better. After hearing this album... I can beleive that!! Much respect to Qbert for paving the way in this art.. he's one of the few that make dj'n what it is, AN ARTFORM!! He's defenitely the man!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Wim Wenders's films are inextricably linked to their companion soundtracks, with music playing as essential a role as any star actor--just see Wings of Desire, Until the End of the World, and Paris, Texas for proof. And now we have The Million Dollar Hotel. On this outing Wenders turns to U2's Bono, who not only contributes two tracks from his band but also collaborates with a host of outstanding artists, including Bill Frisell, Brian Eno, and Daniel Lanois. Even without the film, the songs resonate with a haunting glory. --Tod Nelson

Amazon.com

The soundtrack to a Wim Wenders joint is often as creative and satisfying as the movie itself (see Until the End of the World and Wings of Desire), serving not only as a companion to the film but as a stand-alone work of art. The Million Dollar Hotel is no exception, indeed it ups the ante. The film is based on a story conceived and written in part by U2's Bono, and his influence is all over the score. U2 contribute three stunning songs, most notably a collaboration with Daniel Lanois, "The Ground Beneath Her Feet," a soaring pop ballad with lyrics penned by writer Salman Rushdie (from his novel of the same name) that stands among the best U2 cuts ever recorded. In addition, Bono joins the all-star "Million Dollar Band" (comprising Mr. Fly himself, Daniel Lanois, Bill Frisell, Brian Eno, and others) for a host of great tracks, including the ethereal groove of "Never Let Me Go." And as if that weren't enough, The Million Dollar Hotel also features a duet between Brad Mehldau and Frisell ("Tom Tom's Room"), a surprisingly smoky cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" by model-actress-chanteuse Milla Jovovich, and a raved-up, Americanized, Spanish-language version of the Sex Pistol's "Anarchy in the U.K." ("Anarchy in the USA") sung by Tito Larriva with the Million Dollar Band. Despite such a wide ranging host of contributors, Bono's sure hand keeps the album within the same emotional spectrum, colored by a kind of melancholic longing and a wistful wonder, resulting in not only one of the best and most original soundtracks ever recorded but a sure nominee for Album of the Year. --Tod Nelson

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Only for U2 fans.......2007-01-03

I am a big U2 fan and I don't really like this. There are a couple really good songs on it but other than that... not for the average listener.

2 out of 5 stars Where's Waldo.......2005-10-26

I am an avid U2 fan and understand that as the band experiments, reinvents, pushes the envelope, etc. that we have to be patient and listen, re-listen, and give the music a chance. So it is with this record. But finding the U2 aspect of the soundtrack is a little like finding Where's Waldo. On some tracks its very obvious, on others its virtually impossible.

I'll keep listening but so far its a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the Frisell stuff.......2005-03-23

I bought this way back in 2000 for the U2 songs (in fact, I have still not even seen the film). Repeated listenings over the past 5 years has led me to the conclusion that the finest material on this album is the instrumental stuff comprised of the non-U2 groups. Bill Frisell fans should pick this album up for sure, as a couple of songs he plays are breathtakingly beautiful.
Unfortunately, you'll have to skip over the song titled "Satellite of Love" because Milla screams and gargles over a good portion of it, leading me to cringe uncomfortably - I really like her in movies, but this vocal performance is sad and annoying.
But aside from that, the album is worth buying for the reasons I gave above.

5 out of 5 stars In the night, under a full moon..........2004-04-14

...to relax with a good music!

3 out of 5 stars Clueless.......2004-03-31

Okay, so it may not be a GREAT album, but the Milla-bashing is just inexusably misinformed. Milla's smoky vocals are lovely. It is Bono who does the horrid squawking at the end. If you listen toward the end of the song they take the FX off and you can hear him. It would have been a great song without it.

Album Description

Looping and multi-tracking his voice onstage to create his own live backing tracks, Kid Beyond layers his transcendent singing voice over his own beatboxing and vocal instrumentation. The result is a riveting brew of pop-electronica that has drawn comparisons to Gorillaz, Moby, Fatboy Slim, Thievery Corporation and M.I.A. His live show has been called "Amazing… truly impressive" (Keyboard Magazine); "Deep, powerful…" (SF Weekly); "Fiercely charismatic… truly mesmerizing" (East Bay Express); "Kid Beyond's mouth is something you must hear." (Remix Magazine).

Kid Beyond's diverse vocal talents converge on his debut EP, Amplivate. Produced by alt-hip-hop wizard Alias (Anticon Records), San Francisco's The Rondo Brothers (Dan the Automator) and LA's Gabriel Mann, Amplivate casts Kid Beyond's soulful singing voice and conscious lyrics in a sea of crunchy break-beats, dubby bass-lines, wobbly turntables, swirling strings, bleepy bloops, distorted guitars… all produced from his mouth.

Kid Beyond's career has exploded in the past year. An endorsement video for Ableton Live (the leading music-looping computer software) - of Kid Beyond demonstrating his live-looping techniques in his kitchen - became one of the Web's most viral videos of 2005. Director JJ Abrams (Alias/Lost) requested a Kid Beyond version of the Mission Impossible theme for the MI:3 DVD. VH1 brought him onto their reality show "Supergroup" to fill in for Jason Bonham as a human drum kit, appearing alongside Ted Nugent, Skid Row's Sebastian Bach and Anthrax's Scott Ian. A profile on Kid Beyond landed in heavy rotation on Al Gore's Current TV cable channel. Electronica pioneer BT flew him to LA to collaborate on an all-vocal dance track. Hip-hop / spoken-word legend Sage Francis put one of Amplivate's tracks (the Buddhist-blues anthem "I Shall Be Free") on an upcoming compilation CD.

Having shared the stage with Keane, Lyrics Born, The Coup, Michael Franti & Spearhead, String Cheese Incident, Amon Tobin, KRS-One, Buckethead, The Wailers and Particle, Kid Beyond has attracted an intensely loyal following of techno-Burners, hip-hop heads, jam-band fans, MySpace kids and bloggers worldwide. This "underground legend" is not going to stay underground for long.

An intresting new direction for music from a very talented artist. Kid beyond provides four exellent tracks. the only failing is that there are only four songs on this disc. I was very hungry for more

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2006-12-21

I also just saw Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap in Milwaukee, and even though she's incredible herself I half expected the openers to be lame. I missed the first one (Levi Weaver) but walked in to Kid Beyond... his incredible beats and twists are completely breathtaking. He has this astounding power on stage that you can't stop watching. The way he uses his hands is brilliant, and makes you want to jump up on stage with him. He assisted in a number of songs for Imogen Heap with background effects, and the raw talent of this guy was not lost in the wave of adoration for Immi - another impressive attribute. Although it's definitely a must have cd, it's no lie that you have to see him live to get the full effect. I give this guy 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars I Second That!.......2006-12-19

I also just saw Kid B open for Imogen in Milwaukee - WOW! I swear, the whole crowd had their mouths hanging open in awe and amazement at this dude's raw talent! Cool cd, especially once you realize that he's making every sound from his own mouth. Definitely take the opportunity to see this guy live for the ultimate experience of a lifetime! I'm in love!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-11-23

I just got back from seeing Kid Beyond open for Imogen Heap. This dude blew my mind. I've never seen something so amazing in my life! The album captures his beautiful voice and delicious beats but you have to see him live to get the whole experience. I swear to you, every sound that you hear on this record came out of his mouth. It's just this amazing man and his looping machine. Buy the CD and find out when he is coming to your town. Do not miss it! I promise you won't be disappointed.

Newman's music is both rousing and plaintive. "One More Day" is worth the price of admission alone. Quite simply, beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime (1981 Film Soundtrack).......2007-02-20

Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25

The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!
