With Foley Room, Montreal's Amon Tobin throws his torch in with the blazing tradition of full-length works composed in the majority with found sounds. Having formerly made his name as a craftsman of vinyl samples into towering rhythmic dynamos like his fin-de-siècle LP, Supermodified, Tobin tries sampling the world for himself. With microphone in hand and his tape console slung over his shoulder, he captures the timbre of factories, a massive satellite dish, and local avant-garde improvisers with equal zest. One loping highlight comes early in "Big Furry Head," when during a token trip-hop lead-in--all reverb, squiggle, and over-compressed drumbeat--a tiger's hungry growls tears new life across the frequency spectrum, signaling the abyss-deep thump of Tobin's next new groove. Whether he's wandering through lush, meandering string workouts ("Bloodstone") or more aggressive avenues toward beauty ("Ever Falling"), Tobin's gait is ever informed by the beat. But where some contemporary found-sound sculptures like Matthew Herbert's Plat du Jour keep a more strident sampling ethos in the service of musical politics, Tobin's approach clearly reeks with a love of sound manipulation as its own reward: every process an adventure, each completed work a revelation. --Jason Kirk

Album Description

Electronic beatmaking legend Amon Tobin reinvents himself on Foley Room, an album meticulously created from field recordings and other found sounds. Still very much an Amon record, but with fresh new underlying sounds. Includes bonus DVD documenting the process.

1 out of 5 stars I DON'T LIKE IT (It needs a negative review).......2007-07-12

I don't like this album, it is extremely boring. I'm not holding it to comparison to anything prior by Amon Tobin. I don't like it because I found myself fast fowarding through parts in search for something more.

I wanted the grass to get greener and this was never the case. I also search for something in music that I might enjoy, or even a singular sound that I can sample and exploit.

This album failed to entertain me, or make me feel energized. Even with the hope of discovering some cool sounds it is a total let down.

5 out of 5 stars o.0.......2007-07-08

I wonder if he played all those random instruments. The percussion sounds very natural, I would find it hard to believe they were all from a computer program, it would probably be easier to just record the drums and edit them afterwards. There's lots of stuff you miss listening to this the first few times around, lots of little details in the sound.
There's some symphony stuff going on as well, guitars too, chimes, synthesizers, vocals, pretty much everything... and none of it sounds familiar. Once all this settles in you have a very replayable CD.

When I first heard Amon Tobin I listened to Out From Out Where and then bought his others. They were all good, but this one stands out a little because the structures of the songs are pretty random, but they make sense somehow. I barely notice any repetition on Foley Room. If I listen to Permutation or Bricolage it is very noticable by comparison.

Electronic music is a genre with a lot of sub-genres and is expanding all the time. It's difficult because like computers themselves, electronic music is always getting updated and you have to keep up with the times. However some people are continually able to bring something fresh that has a new sound. This is one of those cds that actually gets better the 4th or 5th time around.

5 out of 5 stars 2007? Try 2307.......2007-05-09

Foley Room is an industrial breakbeat / drum-n-bass symphony. Amon Tobin not only improves but he vastly raises the bar every single time he releases an album. You know this is the man who made Out from Outwhere and Permutation right away but what you cannot prepare for is the epic nature in which he rings in 2007 with music that is 2307.

I have a deep love for the album format and 'Foley Room' further defines this affection. It allows for structure and limitations to encourage discipline and creativity. The music here is like the intensity of a beautifully emotional 500 lb. beast trapped within a metal cage where he barely fits and has only one small air hole. He is angry and dents the structure while trying to free himself. He becomes hopeless realizing this is impossible. He ponders his life, becomes bitter and angry again. Somehow, we feel like he got himself into this.

Take that for what you will, but the only album I can compare this to is 'Endtroducing...' and that is a stretch because this is much more intense and the songs are mostly shorter in length (my only gripe because these songs could be of brilliantly epic length to match the mood). But the darkness and emotion is evident and delves deeper into actual human psyche than I'd say nearly ALL of, at least, electronic music.

Amon Tobin has officially been ordained into the vanguard of music's elite.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Artistry in Electronica Pur.......2007-04-17

Having been a fan of the Art of Noise in the 80's, it is a very high bar that reaches my ears these days, and Amon Tobin has done it. His incidental style, combined with crafty rhythms and a high degree of acoustic precision create something between acid jazz and techno, a very listenable, wordless play on the human spirit.

Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy. --Chris Nickson

It's interesting how the negative reviewer below can speak of "delving" into so many styles of music, yet evidently came into this album with a pre-conceived notion of what it should be. This album makes no claim or attempt to be "classical" Indian music, except for maybe the last track. This album IS a fresh collaboration among some of the world's most talented performers (Indian and otherwise) that had my jaw firmly planted on the ground from the moment I hit "play". Hearing traditional Indian instrumentation combined with western production proved to me that nirvana or a great album of any style can only be obtained with an open mind. Absolutely amazing. 10 stars...

5 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites..........2006-05-07

I'd been a fan of Bill Laswell and Talvin Singh before, but this album introduced me to Tabla and the skill of Zakir Hussain. Years later, I own more classical tabla albums from Hussain and others, but I still come back to this one. I love it so much I started playing tabla this year.

Favorite tracks: "Palmistry" and "Alla."

1 out of 5 stars ?!.......2004-09-29

I really don't want to be mean, but I find this album very shallow. Classical Indian music is a very complex, subtle and beautiful thing. Comibining it in this way may help to get these wonderful tabla players to a wider audience, but the true energy has been tainted and lowered to make it palatable to simple-minded people who need westernized electronic and wishy-washy "world music" cliches. I don't find this music to be uplifting or enlightening or interesting. And this is not coming from a strict old fundamentalist of anything, I have delved deep into the avante guard, minimalism, "new music", eastern and western music theory, microtonal, etc. I would recomend jsut being a non-westernized album and getting the full benefit of tabla playing. However if your mainstay is jungle/drum&bass, then this would be a step up for you, so go for it, it is worth the pruchase in that case.

5 out of 5 stars oh,that Billy-boy!.......2004-07-15

mr laswell has done many things, but this was quite a suprise!it consists of both chilled and upbeat tala(a middle eastern hand drum)drumming mixed with laz's trademark electronica that gradually fades in and out of the songs.it's a real trip-an-a-half for anyone not ignorant enough to dismiss it as "boring".

5 out of 5 stars The best of all time.......2007-05-27

I pulled this CD set out for the first time in years the other day and was transported back to a time when the sky was seemingly the limit for this new sound called drum n bass. This album will put you in a trance...it gives the feeling of nostalgia while still feeling fresh. I feel like anytime you hear this it will always sound like the music of the future. It's simply the best intelligent DnB album of all time.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-05-13

journey inwards is a an amazing album with the perfect melody to do exactly that but this album unfortunately does not make it, thought I would love it because all these reviews were so positive but bukem takes nice tracks and beats and lays them all over this monotonous and mostly too fast background... kind of irritating actually because you want to hear the music and are constantly bombarded with rapid machine gun fire.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Buy !!.......2007-03-22

Exellent buy for people interested in deeper journey into foundations of drum n' bass. Highly Recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Essential Intelligent DNB.......2006-11-03

A classic release. Before DNB turned too aggressive and still retained some ambient/jazzy/housey vibes, this was the cream of the crop. A crystalized moment in a fast-progressing genre, but one that I'm more than happy to revisit over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Showcase of some of the highest quality D&B around.......2005-08-15

I think it's funny how a lot of d&b artist try to make their drums as fast and intricate as possible. It makes me think of what Steve Vai is to guitar. Although he has unlimited skill, I just don't dig his style too much. Theres not much you can diss about this recording, it's just very nice quality work. It sounds good without getting too cluttered and there are some insane samples thrown in, and the structure is very solid. It keeps me interested the whole time, and I usually have trouble getting away from the speakers while listening to it. It must be good then right?

I read somewhere a critic gave this 5 star and said the second disc was a dissapointment though... I enjoyed the second disk just as much as the first. This whole recording is at the same kind of level Goldie achieved with "Timeless".

"Logical Progression" just keeps getting better and better. I won't bother saying whether or not it will get tired, because every album does after a while. This one is only getting better for me though. If I see Bukem I will remember to give a firm handshake and act respectful =))))

Amazon.com essential recording

If techno ever does become the sound of young America, don't expect Richard James to be its poster boy, deserving though he may be. A native of Cornwall, England, James is obsessed with the mechanics of music making: As a kid, he took apart and reassembled the living room piano. Under the names Aphex Twin, Polygon Window, AFX, and other aliases too numerous to mention, he showed that he could make entire tracks with the sounds produced by tapping on a Coke can. Like the indie rockers of yore, he revels in his marginality because of the creative freedom it gives him. His full-length U.S. debut, Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), includes some of the most serene sounds this side of the Orb, but his favorite hobby is the not-at-all-blissful pastime of driving a Daimler Ferret Mark 3 tank through his parents' backyard.

None of his recordings have captured the competing impulses to lull you to sleep and blast out your eardrums as well as Richard D. James, his third and best album. As the title indicates, James has turned inward for inspiration, painting aural pictures of real and imagined scenes from his west country childhood. "Goongumpas" is a fanciful, playful tune that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As his adventures with the family upright indicate, James was a bit of a devil even as a child. "Beetles" is the sound of a boy frying bugs on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass, and "To Cure a Weakling Child" shows flashes of the sort of sadism found only on preschool playgrounds. If you still doubt that young Richard developed early on, the romantic Nino Rota-style strings on "Girl/Boy Song" are just made for passionate seductions, and the tune appears in three mixes, each one hot and hornier than the one before.

The raucous undercurrents of even his calmest tunes and the sources of many of his most common sounds are what link James to the rock tradition. With Richard D. James, the artist solidifies his position as an electronic music mastermind who has earned a spot beside such well-respected innovators--whether or not he's destined for stardom. --Jim Derogatis

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect, just almost perfect.......2007-06-07

Besides the award for one of the worst covers ever, Richard D. James Album is actually really good. Granted, I failed to see what's so ______ good about it, but I still think it's essential. It shows that electronic music actually takes talent to create.

THe music? Like I say, samples always HELP, but they sure don't always means it's bad or good. Fortunatly, I had no trouble picking up the music. It's got good atmosphere, especially on songs like Beetles and Milkman. I still haven't figured out how they relate to himself and his life. That's the main theme, hence the title. The songs are a hit or miss basically, you will either like them or you won't THe beats aren't regular beats (like Fatboy Slim

It's really really cool, but it's still not exactly the best album ever. I like You've Come A Long Way, Baby, a lot better, but this is great electronic music. _____ electronic music haters. It's a great (very great) genre. It's not poppy either. It's the opposite. So don't expect any ____________ songs like We LIke To Party.

5 out of 5 stars symphonic noise.......2006-10-02

I first discovered this cd while working in a music store. This cd is not for the weak hearted. One major thing I noticed in titles such as the Boy/Girl song is that he never uses the same loop twice. The background will stay steady but everything around it will move all over the place, like putting bethoven in a cement mixer. I don't want to scare you away from this album because it is a definate worth while buy but to truely do this cd justice you need to strap on a good set of headphones and hang on for a glorius ride.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-07-10

Between this one and drukqs, this is one of my favorite albums. I can say that I like every song on this CD. Especially the last half.

If your new to aphex twin, this is an excellent starter album.

And if your already a fan, I dont know why you haven't bought this yet

4 out of 5 stars Well worth having if you like AFX.......2006-06-22

The other reviews say it all really - good, but not as esential as Selected Ambient Works (and not really in the same vein either). I just wanted to answer the reviewer's question about the gravestone: Richard D James's parents had a stillborn child some years before he was born, also called Richard, and the image is that of his brother's gravestone. (This also explains the significance of the middle 'D'.)

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Often proclaimed as electronica's one true genius, Richard James, a.k.a. Aphex Twin, returns with a double CD that showcases his cleverness as well as his inevitable inscrutability. Still, amid macabre birthday songs, unsettling screams, and other bizarre touches, Drukqs offers the most technically accomplished and beautiful tracks of Aphex Twin's career. Every aspect of the Aphex brain is on display here, from stark pieces performed on sampled piano and zither to Squarepusher-styled drum & bass implosions, all informed by that peculiar Aphex treatment of bittersweet melody and unparalleled programming. For an artist once engrossed in homages to his dead twin brother and grotesque videos, Drukqs shows James getting by purely on music alone.

"Mt. Saint Michel Mix" starts as maddening drum & bass, but is soon transfixed by glowing tones, hand drums, and police sirens. "Vordhosbn" is all acid beats and mad synths matched with fart-bombs and haunted cries. "54 Cymru Beats" sounds more like the tweaked-out, goofball techno of Wagon Christ than Aphex, while "Taking Control" goes metaphysical with cerebral synth-drums and muddled vocals. If Drukqs is the result of medication James has been imbibing during his three-year hiatus, then this is indeed better living through chemistry. Regardless, his music is still as beautiful and frothy as ever. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars Sucked in........2007-04-23

Avril 14th was the first song I heard off of this album. That was the reason I bought it. I had owned other Aphex Twin albums such as "Richard D. James Album" and the "Come To Daddy EP." But neither of those are as mysterious and beautiful as "Drukqs."

This album flows together very nicely if played continuously through. There are about ten electronica tracks, 10 piano pieces and a few scattered ambient tracks. Some of the trip-hop tracks really slap you in the face with how involved they are... But the piano pieces are truly beautiful.

Definitely my favorite Aphex Twin album.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta B on druqks to undestsnde unnerstudit unistoou ......? Never mind.......2006-10-31

This Richard James album is another example of why I struggle to understand his intentions. Sometimes, he plays soft pleasant pieces (that no IDM fanatic needs), and then he goes off into some spastic brain hemorrhaging instrumention (which I actually find comforting). But, I guess he has to do this so that the album, as a whole, doesn't just sound like a whole lotta insane noise. Many of his more spastic drum and bass implosions (as it's been refered to) is some of his best work on this album. Richard James has come along way since I first heard of him with his "Selected Ambient Works" album that I bought many years ago. I was slow to accept and understand this album because there was nothing else like it at the time. I played it alot, got bored with it, and then just gave it away to a friend. Little did I know, that Aphex Twin was going to re-introduce himself to me in the near future.

A few years ago, I saw a movie called "Pi". It was a low budget black and white film based on the subject of intelligence and insanity, and the soundtrack that supported this film had a series of artists that I have never heard of before. Watching the film, I just loved all that strange electronic music playing in the background, so I knew I just had to find the CD soundtrack of the film "Pi".

On the soundtrack, I saw that Aphex Twin had a track on it. I don't remember this track in the film ("Bucephalus Bouncing Ball"), but I sure loved this bizarre electronic collage of dissonant noise. Plus, this CD soundtrack introduced me to alot of new artists, all making a new sound in electronic music that I have never heard before. This new music is called IDM, which means "intelligent dance music". But, I think it should be called ADM meaning "addictive music", because that's what this new music has become to me. I have a hard time listening to regular music anymore. This IDM is very motivational music to listen to. This music gives me all sorts of nervous energy which has turned me into a healthier, more physically toned, workaholic. When I'm in an IDM music euphoria, I can't sit still. After buying the soundtrack of "Pi", I ended up looking for more CD's with this new IDM sound.

This could easily be anyone's favorite CD from Aphex Twin. It doesn't really matter which Aphex Twin album you buy first (although, "Selected Ambient Works: Volume Two" would not be a good idea). But, you know, you can't just allow yourself to be satisfied with this one CD. However, if you don't have a lot of music like this, than it can seem to become too repetitious and become tiresome rather quickly if you just let yourself play this CD too much. Even I don't care to sit through the entire playback of just the one CD. But, I have determined that this music from Aphex Twin should be played within a mix of other Ambient Dub and other various glitch and IDM related electronica. To just play these 30 songs over and over, end to end, can get dull rather quickly. But if you listen to these songs mixed in and shuffling with about another hundred IDM instrumentals than you will truly appreciate Aphex Twin's participation in the overall bigger picture of today's electronic instrumentals.

I have these two Aphex Twin CD's shuffling amongst others in my 200 CD carrousel. These tracks by Aphex Twin are being mixed up with tracks by Autechre, Gescom, Phutureprimitive, Squarepusher, Pete Namlook, Biosphere, The Orb, The Higher Intelligence Agency, Sounds From the Ground, Electric Skychurch, Plaid, Boards of Canada, and various other similar artists of which Aphex Twin belongs with.

I also have these songs and other IDM and Ambient Dub tracks burned onto ATRAC CDR's that is made through the SonicStage program made available only by Sony. (Check out some of Sony's ATRAC CD players and find out why burning hours of your favorite tunes onto a single CDR is better than just loading an ipod with mp3s) Burning hard copies is definitely better than just floating your music in a temporary storage unit like an ipod. (You can make 32 hour CDR's, and as many as you want from all your CD's and mp3s. How many songs can your single ipod hold?)

Anyway, Kudos to you for discovering this Aphex Twin CD, but now, explore some of the other artists I've mentioned above. You will love this new world of sound that you've discovered. It is more vast than you could ever imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Wacky........2006-09-04

If this is your first Aphex Twin/"IDM" purchase, this will be the weirdest thing you've ever heard in your whole life. It's probably not accessible to a lot of people. Actually, it's kind of annoying at first, but after a while it might grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars try it, start to finish...........2006-07-21

i've read all the bashing reviews of this album, not up to par, a little shallow, etc... richard james has fooled the sheep. these disks have been designed to play together, try it, start to finish. i read this somewhere else online and was a little sceptical but a few minutes into the first track(s) was completly convinced. i ripped both disks onto the computer under two different formats and used two different media players timed to start at exactly the same time. a lot of work to enjoy an album but remember rdj is a computer geek and a jokester, probably gets off on the the bum reviews. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Motion Cd Review.......2007-03-08

The Cinematic Orchestra has always been a favorite of mine. Motion is an awesome work that's worth every cent. The music is cutting edge, intense and spiritual. These songs put me in a great mood every time I listen to it, and it stays in my cd player. Get it, the cd is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Jazzed up break beats.......2006-08-15

This is a gem. Pure and simple.
The smokey lounge atmosphere of "Durian" introduces you to its quite melancholie of a jazz based ensemble and touches with varying intensity of downtempo, Bristol sound ("Channel 1 suite" loop a la Portishead), and nervous break beats with live like drumming. The trumpet has either sad distilled tones ("Durian") or is nervous ("Channel..."). Haunting female vocales have this far away feel ("Diabolus") or a stronger appeal, more demanding (N.Simone impression in "Durian"). The percussion is energetic (ride cymbal getting tougher as "Channel..." goes) or includes playful soft rim shots ("Ode to the Big Sea" with it's intro classic Brubeck style). "Diabolus" has a sustained background brass which creates an impression of questioning notes which is reinforced by the loop of the bass.
It's all skillfuly blended and is always sustained with an almost dangerous feel easily recognizable in underground modern day trip hop et al. But the gorgeous classic references of the edgy Blue note years makes it audible again and again just like the stubborn loops which create the texture of its density. The drawling voices are countered by dynamic and true to life drumming explosions. It will certainely satisfy curious ears and jazz amateurs who wish to extend their audio portfolio to other areas, especially for those broken in to hard bop and tolerant towards talented groups like Massive Attack or Skalpel. In all it's dreamy but challenging audio spiel...it has that quality of unexpectedly weaving the immediately agreable of warm jazz with the shamelessly rebelious of this modern day's electronic risk taking endeavours. It's a jazzed up version of break beats...or maybe the reverse.

5 out of 5 stars great jazzy sound..........2004-09-07

to begin i just wanna say that motion is the first album of the cinematic orchestra, and not the second as some people stated.
in second place: motion is the best cinematic album.
if your looking for a jazzy electronic sound with a great swing and beat, this is the one you should get...

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Jazzy Mambo !!.......2003-10-22

I was excited to learn that The Cinematic Orchestra had more albums other than "Motion". After reading the reviews, it seems this album was the lower on the totem pole, however, this album is excellent. It's jazzy, the rhythm grabs you, and it ties together perfectly with a electronic feel. This is an album for anyone who appriciates contemporary jazz. Every track is worth listening to, and it doesn't get old. I am very ambitious about purchasing thier other albums after hearing this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Intense Moods.......2003-02-17

I bought this on a lark. I agree with one of the reviewers that described this as underground jazz in a smoky bar room. It fits! The vocalist really adds a mourning effect to the record. The ensemble plays are very good. If I were to voice any complaint, it would be that there is not enough solo-ing in it. It grows on you in a plesant way. I make a lot of tapes and these cuts are good mood transitioners. Dark, foreboarding and expressive. Great spin!

Album Description

This twenty-something boy duo from Paris finds a way every time of making audiences dance frantically, with a discreet tear in the eye (because of the keyboard's chords) while raising their fists (well, because of everything else). This record contains the groundbreaking title song, the harmonically ambitious yet extremely catchy "Let There Be Light", and the up-tempo Dancing Vampire-like "Carpates". The EP is already a fave, played by Laurent Garnier, Trevor Jackson, Tiefschwarz, James Holden, Andrew Weatherhall, Optimo, Benny Benassi, and such.

Although its different from Justice's hits of D.A.N.C.E. and We Are Your Friends, this album showcases that justice has their own unique style that will blow you away, it will take some getting used to but the songs on this album are quickly becoming a song that every club will play.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was.......2007-05-14

I had high hopes after all the good reviews. I was disappointed with this cd. I've only listened to it once. It reminds me of underground club music of the early 90's.

5 out of 5 stars Trip hop/ electronica classic.......2006-12-19

Baxter, one of the best female trip hop artists I've ever heard of in my life.
I remember when this album was released and couldn't stop listening to it, and still listen to it frequently..

excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Baxter Roxors.......2006-07-03

Ordinarily, I don't care much for vocal drum and bass or jungle, largely because I felt that many artists did not fit the vocals to the music well, but simply layered them on. Baxter is an excellent exception in that regard. The voice of Nina Ramsby blends wonderfully with the darkly energetic music.
Overall, I wanted to give this 4.5 stars. I reserve the perfect rating of 5 for an album that I will play all of the way through whenever I play it, whereas this has a couple of songs I didn't much care for and tend to skip. I definately recommend this album to anyone that likes vocal D&B, jungle, or darker trance(s).

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Album.......2006-05-05

I Like this CD a lot because it is unique. Interesting songs and interesting use of electronics. I like her voice a lot. I would consider this one of the more advanced albums in the Trip Hop genre. I listen to the album in its entirety, and can't say one song is better than an other. It's a rare occasion when I buy a Trip Hop disc and almost every song is purely great and beautiful. The smooth performance, delicate lyrics and simple melodies are backed up by a great beat and deep bass programming. I would like to get more by them.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dieselboy's transitional album.......2007-05-05

Dieselboy's 6ixth Session holds two distinctions: it contains Dieselboy's best opening and his best disc. "Initialize" is exactly that: a slow buildup of bits and pieces of electronica, deep and brooding, as if a robot has just been built and now it's getting ready to initialize and wreak havoc. After "Initialize", the robot comes to life. Disc 1 is amusing, although the middle of it is as repetitive as Dieselboy has ever been. But the first third and last third of Disc 1 is varied and well-constructed. But it's Disc 2 that remains Dieselboy's finest hour. The songs on Disc 2 have structure with a beginning, middle, and end, proving that Dieselboy is more than just a mere mixer. Disc 2 is perfect; every drum and every bass is just so flawlessly executed and impeccably blended, you'd think that Dieselboy is a genius. He's approached this technical wizardry on occasion, but has never been able to match it. In the realm of drum-and-bass, only Roni Size's second disc of New Forms tops Disc 2 of 6ixth Session. Disc 1 can't approach the consistency of Disc 2 since it is twice as long and the repetitious nature of Disc 1's middle part is a bit much, but all-in-all, a winner from Dieselboy. B

3 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-13

An oldy but goody. I heard this album back in high school when one of my friends let me copy it to minidisc... I remembered it through the years and finally bought it recently and it's still as good as ever, I have trouble sitting still while listening to it. :)

5 out of 5 stars Listen to what you like.......2006-04-10

Dieselboy's BEST, second is dugeon masters or project human, or system upgrade, depends on what style u want, I own all of his albums, including the new HUmAN RESOUrce, honestly its not the get up and groove type, its hardcore, REALLY hardcore jungle DNB. This has got heart pounding bass, and crazy synths, super hard fast dnb, with great breakdowns and all blends together very hard and very well. If you like to drive fast or do extreme $hit, then this is what u rock too....oh and I love goldie, and the metalheadz, i have plenty of their cds, but I would take this over any metalheadz cd, anyday, but honestly this cd vs metalheadz is like apples and oranges, but to spend $10.00 elsewhere would be a waste if you crave hard awesome jams....

2 out of 5 stars No fun, repetitive and uninteresting.......2006-04-06

Why is Dieselboy such a DnB stud? I'd rather hear the creativity of Metalheadz any day. This is just derivitive, with no subtlety, and a totally uninspired mix. Spend your money on something else. I will admit, though, that it is HARD!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-06-09

Dieselboy is a great Drum n' Bass artist and I feel that all of his albums deserve 5 stars.

OK is one phrase that's universally known and understood, and on OK Talvin Singh tries for a similar global connection. A classically trained tabla player, he's performed with Björk and Massive Attack, holds his own club nights in London, and is the leading light of the burgeoning Asian Underground movement--in other words, a man of many parts. He brings them all together here--the Bollywood strings, the kannakol patterns of Indian music, and the skittering rhythms of drum & bass and jungle--to create something that is new and thoroughly vibrant. This is Britain at the millennium, drawing on its immigrants, full of Eastern promise, and ready to dive headlong into the future. An album of both intelligence and passion, it is more than OK; it's a complete marvel. --Chris Nickson

Eclipse is the best fusion track that I have listened to in recent times. Talvin Singh is very talented with the Tabla

5 out of 5 stars psychotropic fusions.......2005-08-23

masterful, visionary, tantric fusions of sound to energize and delight.

A nice complement to the darker works of the band, Male or Female.

5 out of 5 stars Salvaje y Descarado.......2005-04-11

¿Quieres acercarte conmigo?

4 out of 5 stars great grooves.......2003-08-23

Talvin Singh is a master at his craft, and it's evident on O.K. Elegant tabla rhythms mix superbly with electronic music to create a sublime ambient sound from the Asian underground. If you like ambient music, or Eastern-influenced electronica, you won't be sorry you bought this album.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous.......2003-05-06

This is beyond any doubt a very strange album. Since I'm not really into drum'n'bass (with the exception of some rather old Aquasky stuff), it was kind of a risk to buy it. Anyhow, I'm really glad I did so. It contains a magical blend of Indian and electronic music, Singh balances on the thin border between earth and space. The sound of the asian instruments is incredible, since Talvin Singh is a professional tabla-player, the technical quality is far beyond average.
I like it. A lot. The most bizarre thing is that I keep on doing so, no matter how much I listen to it.
Without any doubt a marvellous creation... and you shouldn't doubt a second about buying it.
