On his third release, I Am, Nas bolsters his reputation as one of hip-hop's leading wordsmiths. His voice has grown so strong that none of the A-list guests (they include Puff Daddy, Aaliyah, Scarface, and DMX) can upstage the 25-year-old rapper. Nas has acted in a movie (Belly), but his real ambition is to write them; until that happens he'll be known for highly cinematic tales of the street. Nas is a lot like a prison-yard bard: he tells crime stories full of blood and guts, but he balances them with strong messages to stop the cycle of violence. His ghetto tales, such as "Small World" and "Favor for a Favor," stress desperation as the cause of crime rather than glorify the nihilistic criminality. Except for one track, "Dr. Knockboot," which casts him as a columnist to the hip-hop lovelorn and playa wannabes, Nas is unremittingly sober on I Am. His righteousness would seem nearly sanctimonious if not underpinned by superb production from the Trackmasters and DJ Premier. I Am, her soulful debut album, is an artistic exploration that fuses 24-year old Chrisette Michele's diverse musical interests into a wonderland. "I realize that I'm new to the music world, but I've been preparing for this moment for long time," says the Long Island native. Even before signing a recording contract, Michele had performed on concert bills with more established artists like Kem, India.Arie, Angie Stone, and Lionel Richie. "India saw me singing at the Village Underground in New York City. She came backstage that first night and graciously offered me a gig as her opening act," says Michele. Working hard in the studio writing songs and recording demos, Michele finished an album's worth of material before even trying to get signed. "I've been creating songs since I was 12, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand out from the many other performers trying to get a deal." Wonderful, subtle, gracious and enduring........2007-07-23

Finally. A young female singer who isn't begging for a man, bragging on her sexuality and going on and on about the material things she has. There is a maturity in the lyrics and the phrasing of these songs that wows me. Each song actually tells a story or sets a mood. Not to knock other singers, but her positivity (in a time where many sisters aren't really selling a lot of positive) is refreshing. In particular, I would love to see the song "Good Girl" played to young women over and over again.

But it's the voice, the delivery, the complexity that sells this CD to me. Truth be told, this child could probably sing "Little Miss Muffett" and still make a classic. Her voice is at times silk, at others, velvet, and without all of that over singing and caterwauling that some folks seem to think makes them a strong singer.

I enjoy this Cd, it's on heavy rotation in my car and home.

Not a bad record, but nothing compared to slur-punk contemporaries, The Libertines. I find it funny how often people cite their lyrics as the selling point of the band, so "fresh", "witty" and "insightful." Frankly, I didn't hear anything the Velvet Underground hadn't already said. Let's hope Alex Turner takes up heroin; he might end up half the musician Pete Doherty is.

They are not that popular in the US yet, but are huge over in Europe. If you listen to 2 of their songs you will be hooked. Its a new kind of sound and a breath of fresh air from a lot of the crap music now-a-days. I would recommend this CD to anyone who like music!

The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David Greenberger

This cd was a surprise hit for me. I bought this cd because I loved their song featured on the One Tree Hill soundtrack, and now I am hooked. I bought this and four other cds at the same time and this is the one that stood out the most. If you're like me and looking to hear sounds other than the pop songs on the radio, this is the cd to start with.

I found this cd at the library and checked it out because of the band's name- so melodramatic! I love this album, especially the song "Citywide Rodeo." Deb Talan's voice is haunting (for me anyway, but I like the weird chicks), and the duo's indie songwriting chops are superb. Very mellow music, like you might hear at some point in a Wes Anderson movie. Totally worth the $.
P.S. Deb, will you marry me? I don't make much money, but you can play your songs for me any time you want.

I'm Late To The Party But..........2007-05-27

I can't believe it's taken so long for me to review such an unbelievably listenable album. Here's my problem with so many CDs: you buy them expecting a lot, listen a few times and put them away. I have a certain female singer/songwriter that I've been loyal to for many years even though her CD's (to me) have gotten worse and worse (some say she's being experimental but I say she's just trying too hard to be current and have some breakthrough success). The day I bought this woman's last CD is the same day I bought "Say I Am You." Suffice it to say, I listened to the first CD once and realized "never again" and then put in The Weepies. I was immediately relieved (although I knew I already loved them from their previous CD) that it's just as beautiful if not better than their first and I have no fear that they will decide to suddenly start channeling Justin Timberlake. These two artist do what they do and that is sing beautiful harmonies, write amazing touching lyrics and let the obviously love they have for each other shine through to touch everyone with their Happiness and talent. We are lucky to have them. Here's to their songs spinning madly on for many years to come!

If you are looking for peaceful, beautiful music this is for you. It is a delightful mix of some of opera's most memorable moments. Long time opera fans will be familiar with most of the arias and newcomers to opera will recognize music that has become identified with movies and commercials.

You get two cds for the price of one great opera cd, and all of the talented singers that were taken and put on these tracks do definate justice to all of the composers listed. It's not often that an album released in January gets called one of the best of the year in near-unison, but the second full length by Antony and the Johnsons is so startlingly beautiful that it simply has to be. Like his friend and compatriot Devendra Banhart, Antony is a super-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for dramatic artsong. But the cherubic Antony is so original he must get mistaken for an alien quite often; he sings like a bluesy opera singer and switches timbre from masculine to feminine in the space of a breath. The only vocal comparison that comes close is Nina Simone. Antony's honest lyrics deal with deep wounds and troubled desires with matter of fact poetry and subtle humor, as in a short story by JT LeRoy. Aided and abetted by a versatile band that's often closer to chamber orchestra than rock act, Antony delivers a visionary album with I Am A Bird Now. Oh yeah: Rufus Wainwright, Devendra, Lou Reed and Boy George all appear on here, too. --Mike McGonigal

Got a bit of Nina Simone going on here and if you are into Nina you're likely going to enjoy this. It's torch music that's a shade or three sadder.

I bought this on hearing 'You are my sister' on Letterman. Loved that tune, but a whole album of basically the same thing may be a turn off for some folks - it can be a bit tedious.

It's a love it or hate it sort of thing. Not for everyone, but that might be why it's so special.

You can't listen to this and not feel something. Whether it's confusion, annoyance, or awe you are feeling - it's anything but your run of the mill music.
I can't stop listening to Fistful of Love. It gives me chills and makes me want to cry every time I hear it. It's not often you come by music that powerful.

A Bride on Fire.......2007-04-10

It's been a long time since I last felt the desire to share my thoughts on an album. True, I've never been a prolific reviewer. In the past, however, I was more receptive of things musical. Or should I say I was more easily enthused? Quicker at becoming attuned to the ways in which a textual object would lend itself to interpretation? Perhaps I was a keener semiotician then, or liked to think that I was. Perhaps I was more naïve and confident that I could grasp the complexities behind art, or at least that I might be able to uncover (and then convey) one possible meaning treasured within a work of art. Sadly, a lot has changed in my life over the past two and a half years.

Most significantly, I have been through an experience which seems to me to be so close to the one Antony describes incredibly well in I am a Bird Now, by means of the lyrics and the singing style employed. Does he really describe it though? I can't positively say. It sometimes seems like a fallacy on my part, like an easy projection of my life onto suggestions which are polysemous and poetic more than they are specific to any one situation. However, this realization would lead to self-censuring and self-castration. So let's for a minute pretend I'm right. Let's assume that I am a Bird Now is about Loss, about Grieving, about finding Reason or at least Hope and some Beauty in the midst of personal tragedy. Let's presume that it talks about the suffering of someone who doesn't feel at ease in their environment, both physical and psychological.

That Antony is a gender-bending artist is a given. That there is ample use of metaphor in his lyrics is likewise undeniable. While this contributes to making the songs feel painfully sincere, it doesn't strike me as central. Beyond Antony's gender-defying verbal and vocal renditions (which account for my lax use of pronouns), there seems to be a core topic, that of abandonment and loneliness, the sense that something has happened to place the bird in a cage, making it unable to fly. That's how the album starts off. If I am a Bird Now is indeed a story about survival and widowhood, as I like to see it, then it seems also to be a story about communication with those who have left us. There are many instances in which I see the unrequited monologue of the widow to her (my) loved one and her (my) faith that silent answers can be heard through unexpected channels. That's how pain and love become inextricably intertwined well beyond common masochism. Ultimately, the narration seems to develop toward some kind of solution, although it is more about resolve and wishful thinking than it is about actual recovery. It's an animal-like instinct to move on to a new prey, not by virtue of a predatory urge in and of itself, but for the sake of life over death. The most innocent of impulses, the one that truly allows for the bird gerhl to fly and then go to heaven.

Is it all a fallacy on my part, or is I am a Bird Now really to be taken so seriously? I do not know, nor do I care. What I do know is that listening to it made me cry those tears that I had been withholding up until then. That it stirred me and made me feel like someone was expressing the emotions that I myself was unable to express, even though I wanted to and needed to. What I do know is that this is the one CD that I have been wanting to review since I first listened to it, breaking my two and a half year reserve. While this doesn't make my assumptions any more accurate, it does pay honour to Antony and the Johnsons and to I am a Bird Now. This is a thank you, as well as a heartfelt five-star review.

It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21

I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.

Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.

Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".

Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.

Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09

It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.

The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.

The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!

Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."

The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.

Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.

Borland has flirted with his big post-LB breakthrough on and off over the last five years, first with the idiosyncratic Big Dumb Face, then with his brother Scott in Eat the Day before hooking up with bassist Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) and drummer Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle) in proto-industrial powerhouse the Damning Well, whose crushing Underworld soundtrack contribution "Awakening" featured Richard Patrick (Filter, Army of Anyone) on vocals. Now Borland has taken Lohner, Freese and sound designer Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv) to super-producer Ross Robinson's upstart I AM: WOLFPACK label and delivered Black Light Burns' harrowing debut, Cruel Melody, 180 degrees from what you think you know about the eccentric axeman. From the post-Ramones surf rock freakout of opener "Mesopotamia" and the slow-build confessional spit of "I Have a Need" to the introspective, epic closing tandem "New Hunger" and "I Am Where It Takes Me" (the latter featuring the smoky siren call of Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano), Cruel Melody is one hell of a curveball. "For the most part, [the record's] more about melody," Borland says. "It's a big drums record, because Josh Freese goes bananas. A lot of it was thought about in terms of beats and attacking the songs beatwise. And the riff kind of followed second to that, if it was appropriate. "The record starts real aggressively, but toward the middle it gets a little more hurtful and hurting, lyrically, trying to express painful feelings, but still in an aggressive way. Then it kind of opens up in the end. And that was the purpose: to attack, then explain, then release and be done with it." Cruel Melody was originally going to be an esoteric, dirge-heavy solo project with a variety of singers, but as Borland started writing heavier material, he finally decided to take the reins behind the mike. It didn't hurt that he got inspiration not only from Lohner, who doubled as the album's producer, but Lohner's famous former employer. "I was talking to Trent Reznor, playing him these tracks in their infancy," Borland remembers. "And he said, `You're singing like somebody's sleeping in the next room. You should try to open that up.' You know, it's really easy to do cool electronic music that's instrumental and put soft vocals over it, but it's a lot harder to write actual songs and have them hit people." With Cruel Melody locked and loaded, Borland's planning an evocative new onstage persona for Black Light's maiden voyage, boasting a live band with guitarist Nick Annis (Seether), drummer Marshal Kirpatric (Today Is the Day, the Esoteric) and, for now, a laptop to wreak ambient havoc. ("Screw it," he laughs, "there's a computer in the band.") In the interim, he's just striving to perfect his unique approach to making art. "The paintings and the music kind of chase one another, trying to keep up with some other third element that's the idea," Borland considers. "It's almost like when you see a little flash in the corner of your eye and you're not sure what it was. My music and visual art is me trying to look really fast to see what that third thing was. I'm always trying to hit this place that gives me some satisfaction."

Wes Borland was the most talented member of Limp Bizkit. His guitar work was what held that band together. When I was still in high school, I was into LB because all my friends thought they were awesome. They had their place, I guess. They wrote some catchy songs that sounded good at parties, but things got worse with each album, until they became a joke with Results May Vary.

After toying with some side projects such as Big Dumb Face, which was actually a pretty good cd despite the obvious potty humor and outlandish themes, Borland has burst back on the scene with this new band.

Black Light Burns has talented musicians on board. Guys that were previously in Nine Inch Nails. On many songs, you can catch a NIN vibe, but although these guys are industrial, they incorporate many other heavy music styles to invent a new sound. There are sprinkles of classic LB-sounding riffs, there are elements of grunge, classic metal, and other genres.
The entire cd has blown me away, and it has quickly made it's way into my heavy cd rotation. Lots of variety, plenty of hooks, and Wes actually has a good voice for this kind of music. Check out the songs, "Lie" and "The Mark" and those should give you an idea of what to expect. Great album. I like it better than the new NIN.

This really is an amazing album. It's really a great direction for rock, and for Borland, who has always been underrated due to his time in that horrible biscuit band.

Anyways, this album really shows off his strengths as a guitarist, and his often smart songwriting capabilities.

My only real complaint is that this isn't Big Dumb Face. BDF holds a special place in my heart, and it saddens me that we may never get another album from such a great project.

Having little success with Big Dumb Face and Eat The Day, in addition to Limp Bizkit ending up in shambles, Wes Borland has brought forth a rousing gothic endeavor. Bafflingly, he passed on opportunities joining respectable bands Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle, but Black Light Burns sounds like it could be influenced from either band. Perhaps Borland wanted something he could have more control of? This could be the case, since he handles vocals, guitar, bass, programming, percussion, synths, piano, rhodes, violin, cello, and even drums (on just one song, "I Am Where It Takes Me"). Black Light Burns is also Danny Lohner (producer, additional guitar, additional bass, programming, sound design), Josh Freese (drums, percussion), and Josh Eustice (synths, sound design). Both Lohner and Freese have Nine Inch Nails ties, so it's no surprise Cruel Melody has a few similarities to the `Nails sound.

The vocals fit the style of music well - they're gritty, gloomy, and dark - although sometimes monotonous. At times Borland is Marilyn Manson-esque (but not sounding as deep or corpse-like), and at other times he is Trent Reznor-esque. As expected, he brings catchy riffs, along with a handful of solos which are carefully placed and not overdone. Drums and percussion both aggressively attack and calmly lull, and the programming adds electronic flavor. Give Wes Borland's Black Light Burns a chance, because you may be surprised with what a face-painted rocker can bring to the table.

I used to hate Limp Bizkit back when they were popular. I was a NIN/Marilyn Manson fan and hated anything that was rap-related. Even though I kept telling myself that Bizkit sucked,.. I always listened to them on the radio. The music itself was actually pretty good and full of energy that made you want to punch out your car windows.

Fast forward to 2007 and I'm taking music less seriously now. It's just entertainment and it's stupid to be a snob and gauge intelligence based on what music someone listens to. I ended up buying the first three Bizkit albums and I like them alot.

I'm a Borland fan, not a Durst fan.

Black Light Burns "Cruel Melody" is pretty good. It has a lot of NIN influence,.. but Borland still works the awesome guitar riffage. It's strange to hear Borland singing,.. as I'm so used to him being the silent one who speaks with guitar. His vocals need to be pushed to the limits while on tour for him to grow in that department. His vocals aren't bad, they just need some exercise and flexing.

I can't wait for the next album.

black light burns.......2007-06-23

My curiosity got the best of me when I bought this cd. Knowing that Josh Eustis and Danny Lohner lended a hand in the final product was most likely the biggest factor that led me to buy the cd, seeing how both are A Perfect Cicle collaborators. This is a solid first effort overall, the only song I did not like was the opener, Mesopatamia, but the rest of the songs were all strong. Overall, this is a noticeable first release by guitarist/vocalist Wes Borland.

Radiohead's American follow-up to OK Computer is essentially a glorified single for "Airbag," the song that also opens the album, with six new tracks appended (including an instrumental). They're mostly cut from the same cloth as the album, but briefer and flinchier--Thom Yorke's voice, gentle and clear as it is, seems like it can barely push past waves of horror into audibility. Once again, they plumb a few Pink Floydian tricks--the tapes of not-quite-clear voices that open "A Reminder," the pacing, descending riff of "Pearly"--and, though none of the new tracks is quite up to the level of OK Computer (they could well be outtakes), they fit together into a short, despairing suite. --Douglas Wolk

A nice companion to "OK Computer.".......2007-04-29

I've always heard from many Radiohead fans about the quality of the B-sides being pretty good, and while I wanted to get a hold of the stuff, most of it was imports so I thought it was a sky high investment, if I were to do it. And I didn't get into Radiohead until a few years after even this compilation. And it's a great compilation, even if a little bit incomplete for some.

I really love OK Computer and was looking forward to the B-side. People who own that album already know the first track, "Airbag," which is Radiohead greatness, and with some excellent Thom Yorke lyrics, guitar effects and playing, and such. It's actually the song that inspired me to buy said album.

As for the B-sides, they aren't as good as that album, but I think it's far above average, even for B-sides. I really liked the instrumental "Meeting in the Aisle," as well as the others. The songs here are actually pretty catchy, particularly in "Palo Alto," the last track on the record. It's back in print after a long time. So no longer is it "limited edition" as Amazon.com lists. And at some places it is sold at a very good price; you can get it for roughly eight bucks at your nearest Best Buy.

Overall, a casual Radiohead fan may not want this, but if you're into the group already, I recommend it. And in comparison to the actual studio albums, I'd actually put it ahead of the last two LP's, as well as of course Pablo Honey (has moments but is scattershot).

Dear Amazon: "OK Computer" is the title of that album, and taking it out of my title makes no sense at all. Also, I apologize for price comparisons, although I'd either be a lot poorer or would own way less music if I never did such a thing.

Save your money.......2007-04-25

Let me just start by saying OK Computer is one of my favorite albums ever. That level of creativity has rarely been approached by anybody. That being said, there is a reason these songs were not included in that album: it's because they're just not really that great. The material on "Airbag" just does not stand up to the OK Computer material.

Airbag, which incidentally happens to be the only track on OK Computer, happens to be the best song on this EP. Most of the others seem disorganized and disoriented... "Pearly" is a clear step down from the track that precedes it. "Polyethylene" is decent, but would still only make an average (at best) song on OK Computer.

If you already have all of Radiohead's material, go ahead and get this. But get the rest of it (with the obvious exception of Pablo Honey) first.

Cheaper alternative for the US to obtain some of OK's b-sides..........2006-10-13

...But where are tracks like "Lull" and "How I Made Millions"? While they are definitely not Radiohead's greatest, I think they should have been included in this collection as well.

Radiohead's teeth must be pretty pearly........2006-03-05

Airbag/How Am I Driving? is very similar to OK Computer, but still dabbles in some Bends-era guitars. The reason why this EP is an essential purchase is this: it contains the song "Pearly" which is definitely one of Radiohead's best tracks, up there with Idioteque and Paranoid Android.

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.

i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER

Sunset Rubdown's music is lo-fi, shell-shocked, dissonant, and very reminiscent of David Bowie/Brian Eno's post-apocalypse fixation, circa Station to Station. The images and music that singer Spencer Krug has put to tape tell of futility and disconnectedness through his warbled, pained singing--a style that almost distracts too much from the music. It's similar to the way that Conor Oberst's rawness sometimes overwhelms Bright Eyes. However, there are standouts like "I'm Sorry That I Sang on Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave," where a weirdly gorgeous meditation over a click-track coughs up a glimmering loneliness. On "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" glam and drama are dialed all the way up and mixed with a heavy Spectorian wall of sound. "Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings" swirls with tension, then opens into an '80s New-Romantic sad dance party. Employing unusual instruments, off-kilter arrangements, and an all-around herky-jerky feel, the album is intriguing and unsettling, not unlike Krug's other projects, Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade. --Gabi Knight

More than a side project..........2007-03-27

I found out about this group the same way that many others most likely have: I listened to Wolf Parade, wanted more and realized that singer/songwriter/keyboardist Spencer Krug had another band.

That band is Sunset Rubdown and while it is quite different than Wolf Parade (it's softer and more musically sparse), it still contains the unmistakeable love-or-hate vocals that Krug supplies for both groups. But if you loved Krug's somewhat-strained delivery on Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary then you'll likely enjoy this side project of his.

The album does need quite a few listens for it to really grow on you but I instantly loved such tracks as "Us Ones In Between" with it's cryptic and poetic lyrics and it's simple piano melody. "I'm Sorry I Sang On Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave" has a wonderfully eerie, carnival-like, music-box esque charm to it that makes it stand out from the rest of the album. And finally, "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" and "Snakes Got a Leg III" give the album its most musically intense moments.

I have to mention that Sunset Rubdown also has an LP and an EP that were released prior to this. I absolutely love the EP. I highly recommend trying to find it and if you do - buy it! It has 5 tracks and they are all fantastic. I especially love "Three Colours". While "A Day in the Graveyard" parts I and II are probably the two best songs written and recorded by the band.

Rivals the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" in terms of beauty.......2007-01-09

Simply put, this is a beautiful album. For the longest time, the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" stood on its own as the most beautiful album in my collection. Sure, many albums have beautiful songs - even several beautiful songs, but no albums until "Shut up I Am Dreaming" have struck me as comparable to "Funeral", and that's saying a lot.

I'd now like to address the spotlight reviewer. Musicans/ artists (esp. good ones) create from their heart. Sometimes a lot of people like their contribution and they are recognized i.e., fame, and sometimes their contribution never catches on. However, it is insulting to insinuate that this is "music for the scenesters" like spencer championed them as his key demographic. I am 26 and far from a scenester kid, yet I enjoy this music very much. It's like insinuating that pink floyd made music for drug users. The fact that scenesters may (or may not) like this album is just a side-effect; scenesters weren't the impetus for its creation.

This is an album for anyone that appreciates a beautiful piece of work, be it a scenester, a stoner, or a conservative, etc.

I cannot state more emphatically that Sunset Rubdowns album is my pick for album of the year, not just for how surprisingly good it is to anyone that enjoyed Wolf Parade's incredible debut but because it is simply inspiring from start to finish. As a whole this is the most delightful kind of album, the one you wish everyone's side-band would put out to keep the enthusiasm going. The fact that it will remain under almost everyone's radar is not entirely bad, as it leaves it open for discovery many, many years down the road.
