A lone voice sneers "You are about to witness the strength of street knowledge," and with that warning the greatest-ever gangsta album begins. 5 out of 5 stars Classic gangsta hip hop........2007-07-05

This is where it all began for Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. This album was pretty much what catapulted their careers into the future of Hip Hop music. This album was a right up in your face in every aspect. Dealing with everything from gang violence, the drug problem to the injustice's of law enforcement officials. This is a true Hip Hop classic to have in one's archives, especially if you came through that era.

5 out of 5 stars Hot as fire... this one kicks butt! OG Gangsta' rap hard and out cold........2007-06-14

Humorous at times, angry and furious, silly, somphmoric, and strong. These words all fit, yet only begin to describe this work. It is vulgar, it is politically incorrect, it is violent, and it is damn catchy. Infectious hooks, actualy. Why all the negative hype about this one? Because it was put out with no apologies or loosening of it's non stop stranglehold grip on the listener. Great to work out to. These artists, who are very talented, took hip hop to another level, and in so doing expressed their rage, pain, fears and insecurities about life in the inner city. Remarkable indeed, though inappropriate for kids due to the immense and pervasive swearing and glamourizing of murder. It is what it iz. 5 stars for the hooks, and the artists integrity, plus this cd scared the heck out of mainstream white America and the LA police, not to mention the Feds. In NWA's defense: the truth of all of the history of this country, good and bad, from slaughtering the Indians, to the present state of our urban inner cities and prisons are all evidence of the continuation and crisis proportions of racism and a racist prevailing social climate.

5 out of 5 stars Comin Straight Outta Compton!.......2007-06-09

You can not understate how good this album really is. It changed hip hop forever, it brought so much aggression and intensity to the listener that you can not help but get hooked. Ice Cube, the angry and politically charged MC, Eazy E, the boy from tha hood, MC Ren, the slick and ruthless MC, Dr. Dre, the deep toned MC and slick producer and DJ Yella, the beat banger, are the foundation for gangsta rap, comin Straight Outta Compton!

4 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-05-20

Straight Outta Compton is one of the few cd's that changed the way I feel about rap, the cd from start to finish is very good. I listen to Hardcore and other music that is loud and heavy, but there is something about this that I just love!!! buy the cd and you won't regret it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bullet holes in the head of the music industry.......2007-04-28

I can only think of a few albums that have really had a major impact on my life. Straight Outta Compton has got to be right at the top of the list. As a young teen I bought the cassette and wore that thing out in my walkman.
I was immediately drawn to the bada** beats and catchy rhythms. Just the raw sound of the bass drum hitting hard will energize anyone listening. The voices of rap legends Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Wren harmoniously unite with the smooth and powerful sounds generated by Dr. Dre and Yella Boy.
But the real hypnotic power of these songs is infused in the lyrics. These guys rap about their tough circumstances growing up in Compton, an extremely dangerous and crime-ridden city in California. As their words depict the harsh times they constantly endured, the listener is pulled in to a world they might be unfamiliar with. I know I was clueless.
I'm not sure if it's done intentionally, but they really romanticize the ghetto life. They glamorize the gangster attitude. I found an overwhelming appeal to this.
I am no longer much of a rap fan since the N.W.A. days. But I'll always remember the spirit that encompasses this masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Explicit lyrics AND Clean Version- contradiction in terms??.......2006-01-23

This cassette was SO popular when it came out- I remember little seven and eight year old kids jamming to it in the Cabrini Green projects of Chicago- they knew every word by heart. They never heard of the "Clean" version. By the way, isn't the label "explicit lyrics" and "Clean version" a contradiction in terms?? How can an album be both at the same time??? Also, how come no one talks about Easy-E dying from AIDS? I guess that is still a taboo subject. Anyway, this album is a precious historical document- and it was a trailblazing expression of the frustrations of Amerikkka's black urban underclass at the time (mid-1980's). Unfortunately, it is also a very SEXIST album that tends to treat all women as HO's. I guess you can't have everything. Public Enemy also came out at about the same time and they were a lot more sophisticated lyrically without the sexist crap.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC beginning to Gangsta Rap from Compton.......2005-11-26

Take you back to 1988 when hip-hop was almost entirely a NY element. Then comes in the vulgar, dirty and harsh lyrics and world of 4 young men from Compton, who changed the way rap music went from this point forward. Very controversial and something new, you knew this would create some buzz, and the Parental Advisory sticker became almost commonplace on rap album because of this album. With the controversy you knew would come sales, as this sold over 2 million copies (probably much more by now) and brought the street to the suburbs and country side. With 13 songs, 3 are classic, 3 are almost classics, 1 I skip, 1 is ok and the other 5 are good or great songs. Eazy E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and MC Ren (with some production help form Yella and songwriting by the D.O.C.) they bring the first great street rap album alive. As I said Yella with Dr. Dre bring some great production for a 1988 album. A must have gangsta rap album for everyone to own.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-11-25

Now I'm not a big rap fan anymore but I still love old west coast rap. Ice cube,Eazy E, Dr. Dre,2pac, and others I still hear. This album I still love because it's so original. Straight outa comptian, 8 ball, express yo'self ,man that's real rap for you. Now rap is all about people who pretend to be gangstas like ja rule, and jay z. Some rappers I like today like 50 cent and I still give it to snoop dogg. But this is the crown jewel, of the west coast rap scene.

5 out of 5 stars STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON AND INTO OUR LIVING ROOMS.......2005-07-13

This might not have been the very first Gangsta Rap album, but with the rage in Ice Cube's voice and the premium production of Dr. Dre this is the album that set the stage for mainstream Gangsta Rap even without the help of radio or MTV. An acronym for Niggaz With Attitude these guys packed all of the attitude of Compton into this disc. With MC Ren and Ice Cube spitting in your face street lyrics like a p***ed off Chuck D anyone who heard this couldn't dodge the impact of the subject matter. "F*** The Police", which of course warranted the imfamous letter from the F.B.I., was a dose of shocking realism at the time as was the rest of the album. Eazy E adds the Flavor Flav quasi-comic relief making this an all around entertaining album. DJ Yella assists Dre with the beats coming together with Bomb Squad's hardcore sonic influences and adding some West Coast flavor to them. As noted at the beginning of this review N.W.A. were not the first Gangsta Rappers, but as is often the case in music it's the ones who perfect the genre that get the recognition rather than the innovators. And perfect Gangsta Rap is exactly what N.W.A. does with STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON.

4 out of 5 stars Eazy E's final hurrah.......2007-06-13

Its undeniable that Eazy E put gangsta rap and Compton on the map. Even though this album falls short of Eazy Duz It, its his next best album. Eazy starts off the album with Ole School S*** a continuation of his lyrical assault on Dr Dre and Deathrow. BG Knockout, Gangsta Dresta and Sylk(Sylk E Fyne in her early days)join in on Ole School S*** as they diss the pants off Dre and Snoop. Sorry Louie(the intro to this song still cracks me and my homeboy up to this day) is Eazy E telling different stories of how he bashed peoples'heads in with his Louieville Slugger. Just Tah Let U Know is definetly a highlight track and Creep N Crawl is Eazy E at his grittiest best. Mc Ren joins Eazy E on the mellow but funky The Mutha*****n Real. The only songs that are skip material would be Hit The Hooker(which sounds out of place on this album) and Wut Would You Do as a diss record falls short of the classic Real Mother*****n Gs. Lyrically it wasnt bad but the techno beat makes it hard to be taken serious. Plus the L****n S****n and F****n interlude will make you puke more times then Jamie Foxx did in Any Given Sunday. Bottom Line: Eazy E's last album is a must have for any gangsta rap fan. Eazy E never dissapointed me with any of his albums and he never stooped to making lovey dovey pop records like most of these rappers do now. Standout tracks:OLE SCHOOL S***, SORRY LOUIE, JUST TAH LET U KNOW, SIPPIN ON A 40, THA MUTHA*****N REAL, MY BABY'Z MAMA, CREEP N CRAWL and GANGSTA BEAT 4 THA STREET. REST IN PEACE ERIC"EAZY E" WRIGHT!

If you like 2 hear some platnum sh.. talking you need to listen to this, Creep N Crawl is my favorite because he used Snoops voice with his own permission but besides that this is a nitetime lets get that ni..a album and a dont get caught slippin album get this I love it!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Awsome Album.......2005-05-01

This album is one of the greatest gangster rap albums of all time. I loved the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg disses!Everything about this album was sick, the guest appearences were sick, the beats were sick and of course Eazy delivers amazing tracks (no suprise there). I think that my favourite songs off the album would be, "Ole school sh**","Just tah let you know","Creep n Crawl",and "Wut would you do". The only songs I didn't enjoy were "Hit the hooker" and that skit with him and the girl. The only way this album would be better is if it got turned into a double album as planned. RIP EAZY.

4 out of 5 stars Another solid album from the Godfather of Gansta Rap -- RIP.......2005-03-25

Eazy E died before it was finished but what he did compile before he died made enough songs for another solid album. Guests are on about half of the 11 songs and are his usual guest w/ 2 female rappers on here as well. The songs are about his usual stuff, p*s*y, Drugs, guns, murder and drinking 40's. Production is pretty good, Yella does 5 songs, Naught by NAture & Boibcat each do 2, and Stone & Tony G each do 1. Out of the 11, 1 I skip, 1 is ok, and the other 9 are good songs. A good CD to have for his fans and fans of real GANGSTA rap.

5 out of 5 stars Godfather of Gangsta Rap.......2005-02-26

Let's face it some of us love Eazy and some of us dispise him.
I think he definetely was'nt afraid to speak his mind, and the words that came across to his fans were sincere even at times halarious. The man was a real brother from Compton who basically introduced gangsta rap to America. This is one of his best albums if you ask me, and that song that goes Wut would u do, Wut would u do if we rolled on you! Man ! I think Eazy definetely won the battle he had wit Dre, because he came with real Compton City G'z after Dre Day. And yes Eazy E was sleezy so everyone cited with Death Row, but (wake up) Gangstaz are supposed to be "fool". Also Dre went to see Eazy-E right before he died I heard, now do you still hate him ?

5 out of 5 stars Serious Game Poppin' Off From The CPT.......2007-04-13

CMDubb's 3rd album, Music To Driveby is easily one of the top albums of the early 90's, thumpin beats and awesome rhymes. DJ Slip, Unknown, and DJ Mike T serve the beats in different flavas, raw, smooth, funky, melodic , jazzy (at times), and hella funky! Productionwise, this is one of the best albums of 1992, in my opinion. All three layer soul and funk samples one on top of another and Mike T dices and scratches them up with precision. Musically, this album resembles a West Coast DJ Premier of Gangstarr. Here in 1992, West Coast and East Coast beats diverge musically, and G-Funk was starting to pop up in West Coast albums. This album shows those tendencies while remaining raw at the same time. MC Eiht is game tight throughout the album. He can hold his own, and he gets hard on DJ Quik (who to be fair, I am a big fan of too)on the short "Who's Xxxxing Who?" and "Duck Sick 2," the latter is a funky classic. I love the Issac Hayes "Walk On By" sample by Slip on the melodic "Hood Took Me Under," an absolute classic where CMW shoots game about the trappings of the hood. Another classic is "N 2 Deep" with Mr. Scarface, another one of my favorite rappers; they both serve heat over a soulful funky beat. I love "This Is A Gang" which beautifully samples the beat sequence and hook of NWA's 1988 classic "Compton's In The House," and Slip adds a soft funky flute to add to the effect. This album sets a high standard for West Coast rap and often takes a back seat to other West Coast albums like The Chronic. It should not be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best Gangsta rap album ever..........2004-03-29

Say what you will about the obvious choices of "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle", my choice will always be Music to Driveby. This album exemplifies what not only great Gangsta rap should sound like but what good hip-hop should sound like as well.

First and foremost, Eiht is an emcee, not just a rapper. This performance is the pinacle of his rhyme ability before he became known to the public as "the guy who says geeyah". He battles ("Dead Men Tell No Lies", "Duck Sick II", "Def Wish II", and "Who's ****ing Who?"), he paints big lyrical hood murals ("Hood Took Me Under" & "Jack Mode"), he constantly reps his hood ("Compton 4 Life"), experiments ("N*ggaz Strugglin" & "U's a B*tch"), and destroys with rapid fire delivery ("Hit the Floor"). He may be the only artist to ever hold his own on a track with the great Brad Jordan a.k.a. Scarface ("N 2 Deep").

Production is cutting edge as well and again. After the slightly uninspired Staight Checkn'em album, this album returns to the original formula that made It's a Compton Thang so great - creative use of samples. "Hood Done Took Me Under" is the classic example. Eiht rips the Isaac Hayes sample used by Easy Mo B for Notorious BIG a few years later for "Warning", and a good decade before Ludacris used it again on his "Chicken & Beer" album. To top it all off, the loop was vastly superior to either of these uses or numerous others. Or better yet, check the clever use of scratches and snippets on "Who's ****ing Who?" where Tim Dog's voice is used to scorch himself. The complete bastardization of BDP's classic "South Bronx" was even a bold manuver with, to my surprise, absolutely no response from Krs-ONE. And to wrap it all up, you get the smooth instrumental "Music To Driveby" to round it all out.

Yeah sure, Eiht didn't get the national recognition until We Come Strapped a few years later. But that album, in my opinon, pales in comparison to the overuse of the same production used on Driveby's "Hood Rat" and waaaaaaay to many "Geeyah's". Driveby's way more diverse in both production and lyrics and does not suffer from any overused topics that Eiht would later be forced to employ from the overabundance of other Gangsta rappers and their albums.

If you're even a mild fan of gangsta rap or even hip hop in general, do yourself a favor and pick up this classic.

CMT's straight checkin em is one of the best albums to come out of the west coast. Its the gangstarr of compton. It consist of beats,rhymes(1 mc),scratching.Sounds like hip hop to me.The production on this album is sick. Its so different than the other westcoast cats from this time.If you are a fan of GSTARRS Take It Personal album then you will enjoy this.If you are a fan of the east coast sound of the early 9ds then you will like this.YOU'VE SLEPT FOR FAR TOO LONG.GRAB IT.A CLASSIC.

3 out of 5 stars I tried hard to love this album..........2005-04-07

but I was really disappointed with it when it came out. Being a huge fan of It's A Compton Thang, I immediately went out and purchased Straight Checkn 'Em. I was expecting more of the same: original hardcore and humourous lyrics, great beats, and CMW's unique style. What I got was a mixed bag with flashes of brilliance but mostly uninspired songs.

After a pointless intro, the album starts off nicely with "They Still Gafflin". Good hardcore ruff stuff I'd come to expect from CMW. The undisputed classic "Growin' Up in the Hood" from the Boyz In The Hood soundtrack pops up next. If you have somehow managed to miss this track in your travels, just know that this was the song that made CMW's career. It is the beginning of their recognition outside of California and easily one of the most influential songs in all Gangsta rapdom. Unfortunately, after this track the album starts to slip.

Part of the strength of Compton Thang was the creative samples and loops that Unknown had hooked up. For most of the remainder of Checkn 'Em, beats appeared that had been used only a year or two before by greats like Big Daddy Kane (see "Straight Checkn 'Em") and others. I got the feeling that this album may have been done as some sort of rush job to keep up with the tidal wave that "Growin' Up in the Hood" had created. Let it suffice to say that the beats sound very formulaic and few risks were taken with production.

That doesn't mean that there are not some gems here. To this day I find "I Don't Dance" a hysterical dedication to those of us that were and are too cool to do the running man. A glimmer of the old CMW production brilliance is here when Eiht becomes exasperated when a club DJ "threw on the 'Ice Ice Baby'". The notorious sample of "Under Pressure" by Queen pops up momentarily and Eiht deadpans that "that !*%? don't faze me". The DJ work on the hook is also brilliant: Zapp "I can make you dance" followed by LL Cool J "I don't think so". Also, despite it's poor sound quality, it is difficult not to be impressed by the ambition of "Driveby Miss Daisy" where Eiht successfully paints a vivid lyrical motion picture of a gangster tale gone wrong.

A final disappointment was a decided lack of Chill aka Tha Chill aka Tha Chill M.C. I know that Chill had run into some legal trouble between "Growin' Up in the Hood" and Checkn' Em and that he eventually did a bid for whatever it was, (hence his complete disappearance from the music scene until '97 or '98). If I had to guess, I'd say he had a lot of legal battles and other troubles on his mind while the rest of CMW must have been struggling to focus on this album.

While it is far from garbage, this album remains to me as a blemish on the recording career of CMW. Despite my disappointment, it remains an album worth checking out as it is better than a lot of other garbage out there today and back then as well. I consider it a slight misstep before the greatness to come on the follow-up classic Music To Driveby.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC HARDCORE GANGSTA RAP AT IT'S BEST !!!.......2004-01-07

I HAVE GOT TO ADMIT IT. A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO WHERE LISTENING TO GANGSTA RAP BACK IN THE DAY SLEPT ON THIS ALBUM. HELL, I DIDN'T BUY IT UNTIL 1994. IT CAME OUT IN 1991. BUT AS I REMEMBER THE ONLY SONG I EVER HEARD WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT WAS "GROWING UP IN THE HOOD". WHICH WAS FEATURED ON THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE MOVIE "BOYZ IN THE HOOD". MAN IF I KNEW THAT THE WHOLE ALBUM WAS THAT GOOD WHEN I FINALLY BOUGHT IT IN 1994. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT IN 1991, WHEN IT WAS FIRST RELEASED. COMPTON'S MOST WANTED ORIGINALLY HAD FOUR MEMBERS. MC EIHT,MC CHILL,DJ MIKE T, AND ANOTHER GUY NAMED UNKNOWN. BUT THE ONLY PEOPLE YOU HEAR ON THIS ALBUM IS MC EIHT AN DJ MIKE T. MC CHILL ONLY RAPS ON ONE SONG AND THAT'S "GROWING UP IN THE HOOD". I BELIEVE UNKNOWN IS THE GUY WHO MADE UP MOST OF THE BEATS. BOY,DID HE EVER DO A GOOD JOB. THIS ALBUM HAS SOME OF THE TIGHTEST AND MOST HAUNTING BEATS I'VE EVER HEARD. BUT IT'S MY MAN MC EIHT WHO GET'S ALL THE GLORY WITH HIS TRADEMARK CALL "JEAH". IF YOU LIKE HARD ASS BEATS AND HARD ASS RHYMES. YOU LOVE THIS CD. THERE ARE NO WEAK MOMENTS ON THIS CD.MY FAVORITE SONG IS "DEF WISH". A DISS SONG TO DJ QUIK. ALL THE OTHER SONGS ARE ALSO TOP NOTCH. INCLUDING "I DON'T DANCE" "RAISED IN COMPTON" AND "CAN I KILL IT" . THE LATTER SAMPLES THE SONG "LOVE T.K.O." BY TEDDY PENDERGRASS. COME TO THINK OF IT , ALMOST ALL OF THE BEATS ON THIS ALBUM ARE SAMPLES. THAT'S HOW THE RAP GAME WAS BACK IN 1991.EVERYBODY WAS SAMPLING BEATS FROM OLD RECORDS.BUT C.M.W. DOES'NT USE A LOT OF JAMES BROWN AND PARLIAMENT. LIKE MOST RAPPERS BACK IN THOSE DAYS WHERE DOING.IF YOU LIKE OTHER CLASSIC WEST COAST HARDCORE RAPPERS SUCH AS N.W.A , ICE-T AND SPICE-1. YOU'LL LOVE MC EIHT AND COMPTON'S MOST WANTED. WHAT REALLY MADE ME GO BUY THIS CD THREE YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE WAS THE ALBUM THAT THEY RELEASED AFTER THIS "MUSIC TO DRIVEBY".I BOUGHT THAT ONE AND I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THE PREVIOUS ALBUM SOUNDED.AS THE YEARS PASSED "STRAIGHT CHECK'EN EM" HAS WENT ON TO BECOME ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE RAP ALBUMS.MAN, I CAN LISTEN TO THIS CD ALL DAY WITHOUT EVER GETTING TIRED OF HEARING IT. CHECK IT OUT. DON'T SLEEP.

5 out of 5 stars A little gem of an album.......2006-06-19

I refer you to the lovely previous review for more in-depth analysis. I feel like this is a perfect album for the current mandolin lover who doesn't always want a current mandolin-family duo to be as progressively minded as is the Marshall & Thile duo. This cd has a great spirit that could probably even get your grandparents up and tapping their toes yet it isn't exactly old fashioned. Track #6 is about the closest thing here to a tune that you could really hear Marshall & Thile playing. It could fit in with other "Mike - mandocello, Chris - mandolin" tunes they play. Here though is more of the essence of the tune without all the intricacies which would go into a Marshall & Thile version.

I'm a fan of David Grier but I didn't much like the Grier & Compton duo live. I'm not sure why but that stuff didn't do it for me. Stomp really does it for me, though! I initially wasn't too hot on the vocal tracks. I still kinda feel like both Mike and David have rather generic voices. They can sing but there isn't a ton of character. Somehow though, even these tracks have won me over. They've really grown on me.

The other day I told someone that I thought this was the best Acoustic Disc album since Traversata. Later when I was back at the old homestead I realized I'd made a mistake. I forgot about the Grisman & Bush Hold On We're Strummin' album being in there, and for some reason I was thinking Dawgnation came out before Traversata, but it didn't. I'd have to say Stomp and Dawgnation are alternating co-best Acoustic Disc albums since Traversata, with Hold On being 3rd. If you're wondering what is Traversata, it's a fantastic Italian album featuring Carlo Aonzo (mando), Beppe Gambetta (harp guitar) and Grisman on a handful of tracks. I don't know why this website no longer carries it. It's still available via the Acoustic Disc site. As of right now, my review of it is on page 20 of my reviews here. I love that album and have been patiently waiting for Carlo Aonzo's own solo album on this label.

To recap, Stomp is a great, fun, beautifully recorded bluegrass mandolin duo but there's just enough modern personality that it'd still bunch Bill Monroe's knickers on a few occasions.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting concept that establishes a likable groove .......2006-03-14

Playing Time - 59:57 -- David Long hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and says his mandolin influences are Frank Wakefield and Mike Compton. In 2001, he joined The Wildwood Valley Boys. He's also worked with Karl Shiflett's Big Country Show. Mike Compton is a native of Meridian, Missisippi (the homeplace of Jimmie Rodgers). In 1970, his first pro job was with Hubert Davis and the Season Travelers. From 1984-1988, Mike was an original member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band. He left the band after a serious bus accident in which he was injured. In 1991, he recorded and toured with guitarist David Grier. In 1995, Compton joined Chris Jones' band, the Night Drivers. In 1996, he joined John Hartford's touring "String Band"and worked with him until his death in 2001. In 2000, Mike performed on the soundtrack to the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and appeared on the Down from the Mountain tour and album. He was one of the "Soggy Bottom Boys." In 2001, Mike returned to the Nashville Bluegrass Band (replacing Roland White).

David Grisman refers to David Long and Mike Compton as "talented kindred spirits" who have chosen to use Bill Monroe's mandolin style as their springboard into both old and new, fertile territory. The musical tangents include some journeys into blues, ragtime, minstrelsy, gospel and old-time fiddle tunes. Four of the 17 pieces are performed solo by Mike or David, while the rest are duets that use mandolin, mandola, guitar or octave mandola. Some of my favorite renderings are with Mike's octave mandola and David's mandolin. These include Ashland Breakdown and Big Indian Blues.

While drawing heavily from a traditional and Monroe repertoire, the album also includes compositions from each of the featured artists, such as Compton's "Big Indian Blues" and "Black's Run" and Longs' "January Nightmare." Both collaborated to pen "Centipede Hop," and its humorous intro has the musicians telling how both of them wrote separate tunes with similar melodies, chords and tempos. We speculate that this tune was the ultimate result when both played their respective tunes together. Within the hour-long set, about 14 minutes have vocals. Mike sings solo on "How You Want it Done?" Three pieces have some nice duet vocals -- "Mississippi Bound," "Every Humble Knee Must Bow," and "The Old Ark's A Movin'." I would've enjoyed a few more vocals on the project, but one interesting contrast occurs on "Black's Run" with the octave banjo mandolin being Mike's instrument of choice.

Recorded live to two tracks, their vision was to capture flavors of the southern music that Monroe might have listened to. I never tire of hearing Bill Monroe's originals, and the rest of the material on "Stomp" is just as exhilarating. Compton's title cut is an octave mandola solo with plenty of bluesy notes and downstrokes. Presented in raw-boned fashion, these tunes will help us better understand the roots of bluegrass. The album would also be a worthwhile investment for players of the eight strings who are looking for material to increase their repertoires. Without much guitar, and no banjo or fiddle, in the mix, "Stomp" is an interesting concept that establishes a likable groove with a maximum of 16 strings being picked at any one time. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best debuts ever.......2005-06-16

Compton's Most Wanted's CD It's A Compton Thing is one of the best debut rap albums to ever grace the rap industry. I remember when the tv channel The Box was just hitting the airway's back in '90, the Compton's Most Wanted video "One Time Gafflin' Up" was one of the videos that I could identify on that channel. MC Eiht & Chill MC made a great dynamic duo even though Chill MC was heard on half of the CD. As one writer said, this was the alternative to NWA at that time. My favorite song on here is "It's Compton Thang" the title track with "Late Night Hype" in second by a hair. This CD did not really have a lot of explicit lyrics in it for a group from Compton. Live at Lonzo's is short but dope rhyming from Chill & Eiht. It's a shame that Chill MC did not rap on Staight Check'em or Music to Driveby because I think from a lyrical standpoint, he was better than Eiht(No offense). Overall, an outstanding debut and this is their second best one after Music to Driveby. One final thing, what ever happened to Chill MC? Peace!!

      5 out of 5 stars I love this cd.......2003-11-02

mc eiht was tight and this was his first joint back in the day featurex the chill mc who somehow fell off after this first release anyway cmw was like nwa's flipside and if eazy and the ruthless posse was'nt so mainstream they would have probaly sounded liuke this but still I love eiht's rhymeflow like in the final chapter with about 4 james brown samples keeping it ghetto, and late nite hype which uses anita baker's angel very nicely while eiht and chill describe the hood and what can happen if you're caught slipping at night and it's a compton thing is my favorite I miss the good old days.

Well unlike the other reviewer this cd is tight, the beats were tight keep in mind that when cmw came out back in the day the beats were different, and rap music came a long way from james brown-pfunk samples. the beats are still ghetto and hardcore and it's still eiht saying geeah, so i see no problem with i. this is for mc eiht fans really cauise we only heard chill on the first cd anyway, If you feeling this pick up eiht's tha8t'z gangsta for more of that compton thang.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD but not enough.......2001-03-20

I have to disagree with the guy above, although i am a massive CMW fan, this album compared with their previous joints was quite a let down, i mean it is still woth buying but it does not stand up against music to drive by or any other of thier older albums. A few tracks were taken off mc eihts "n my neighbourhood" album and put straight on here, which is also annoying. In case you didnt notice the cover is remnisent of another group from compton (NWA) but the album is not quite so ground breaking. Unless you are a hardcore CMW fan you would be better off getting the greatest hits album "1989-99 when we wuz bangin"

      5 out of 5 stars the bomb.......2000-11-22
