Prodigy Soon Come. . . .......2007-02-15
Signing up even later down the road perhaps, is teenager, Stephen 'Genius' McGregor. The name 'McGregor' in reggae carries a mighty weight and as the youngest son of legendary Big Ship Freddie McGregor, Stephen seemed destined to make some type of mark on the reggae music industry as well, but the degree to which he has within virtually NO time at all has been shocking! Coming off a 2006 which saw the fittingly titled neophyte as the mastermind behind some of the biggest riddims in the dancehall (especially the Redbull & Guiness), 2007 figures to be an even bigger year for McGregor as his riddims might just prove to be THE place to be for artists in 07. Along with the fact that he is STILL being the lead captain vibesman aboard his father's Big Ship Productions (and doing nearly EVERYTHING on Freddie's most recent album, 2005's Comin' in Tough).
Both his previous efforts (with Delly Ranks), the MASSIVE Redbull & Guiness and (my favorite) Ghetto Whiskey riddims, respectively, both did well and spawned 3 albums between them. The 'problem' with the riddims were their similar nature to each other, however that barely did a dent either as both can STILL be heard on JA radio to this day. Delly & Stephen's latest piece is probably the only riddim of the three to suffer due to this, as rather unsurprisingly, it is also VERY similar to its 2 older siblings (although you wouldn't know it on name alone as the duo left the bar to find a name for their newest creation). Where the RB&G was as lively as there is amongst the trio and the GW sought to be as menacing and dark as possible, the 12 Gauge lays it back a little. Not to any degree is it a one-drop style riddim but if you were to imagine the RB&G suffering from depression, you'd probably have a great idea of the 12 Gauge before going in.
Because I've been WELL saturated in both Redbull & Guiness and Ghetto Whiskey, its almost difficult to write a review for this one (which might expalin the ridiculous long intro). The 12 Gauge could be better named 'The Aftertaste' riddim as it comes off as somewhat of a 'what was left type' of vibes. Luckily it doesn't resemble its older siblings in terms of size, checking in at an almost pedestrian 14 tracks when compared to RB&G's double disc 22 track opener and Ghetto Whiskey's whopping 27 track disc one form, the 12 Gauge seems to quit while ahead.
The best track here is probably the signature track as well, From Dem Dis. The combination between 5star General Bounty Killer and former protege' Aidonia puts the 12 Gauge through the paces as it shows exactly what teh riddim was intended for, new age high powered digital dancehall with two of the genre's current best taking big shots. Not to be outdone and scoring with the title track is of course Vybz Kartel. His rather violent track is almost a victory lap for the artist as it is clear that in this age, perhaps NO ONE is more fitting to record this type of tune on this type of riddim (not even Killa).
Those are the real highlights here! Bounty's solo offering, Bullet is decent minus the fact that if you've been listening to dancehall lately, you've (just as I have) probably tired of hearing Bounty yelling BULLET! and dragging up 5 year old disputes with Baby Cham and Vegas and even older with (inactive) Merciless, clever still, but enough is enough (even from war-hungry Merciless, no counteraction is forthcoming IM SURE!).
Even through Elephant man's In Deh the 12 Gauge doesn't catch a spark eliminating virtually all melodies he tries to create. And you wouldn't expect anything resembling a melody coming from Future Fambo- formerly Fambo- formerly Future Troubles and his Black Ski Mask doesn't disappoint (one need only listen to Kartel's track vs Fambo's to see the difference between good badman track and not-so-good badman track. Nor overthrilling is young dj High Octane's In My Jeans. . . just no.
Scoring decent is Wayne Wonder and not Delly on their combination Lose Control as the veteran singer oozes something resembling a melody out of the 12 Gauge. As does not as veteran (but vet still) Mr Easy on his nice Wha Tek Some Idiot. Also worthy of spins is Genius' brother Chino on the very clever In de Club and a clean version of the 12 Gauge wraps things up nice and even.
Overall, if you haven't been over-saturated in either the Reb Bull & Guinness or the Ghetto Whiskey (the I wish I was you) you may thoroughly find the 12 Gauge enjoyable, even some of the tracks which I disliked. But, have you found either of those riddims and listend for any kind of a period of time, then you won't want the 12 Gauge anywhere near your players. While it is more than just a solid riddim (its actually quite good) it just doesn't seem necessary, it doesn't milk a good riddim (which dancehall, and all of reggae for that matter, loves to do) its milking a good VIBE. Vibes are to flow infinitely, unfortunately yet hopefully, the 12 Gauge kills this one, for good.
