A Light and Easy Listen..........2007-07-10
The new album from Suphala, "Blueprint" is a light and easy listen that would enhance any Sunday morning. Known for integrating the modern sound of the tabla into the mainstream music scene, Suphala's latest progressive work is a fusion of rhythm and electronica guaranteed to awaken the senses. The album is a perfect balance between the world and jazz genres with some interesting collaborations including the first single, "I feel Awake Even Though This Is a Dream" featuring Edie Brickell. Blueprint is a prime example of why Suphala has become an established act in today's world music scene.

Timelessly Innovative.......2005-12-17
It is well known that this album has inspired many women to enter into the blues music industry. I recently purchased this smart cd-- I am sorry to say that I waited so long to do so. Between the sheer anger of the song "Suffer" to the soul-full desparation of "*4 in the morning", I am completely impressed, and a permanent fan.
Outstanding!.......2002-12-03
Outstanding! Really made my day. Cathy Jean's not only the best looking female blues singer in the biz, but her voice can make the hair on my back stand up. She and her band got it going on.
Michigan Swing Dance Association!.......2002-02-10
This is another in the fine outings by the very sexy Cathy Jean. The emotion she displays is certainly displayed on the Louisiana style cut, "Unfinished Business". "Leave Me Alone" is a song of an entirely different style being that it's more bluesy in the traditional sense. Dancers will be knocked out by this hard driving tune along with "I'm Your Girl" which is just a bit quicker but with the same power to make you get up and dance.
sophistication and downhome grease.......2001-12-19
Cathy Jean is a singer/songwriter out of Baltimore, Maryland. This is her second CD, and her sound has moved towards a sophisticated blues and rock, with some contemporary influences. She has a voice that is well suited to this eclectic approach, capable of crooning in one song, and belting out a hard shuffle in the next. The music kicks off with "Be Glad", a hard shuffle, followed by the title track, a crisp blues rocker. Cathy and band then move into some jazzy funk in "**4 in the Morning**", a little of the Bo Diddley beat in "Unfinished Business", then back into the funk with "How Many". "Leave Me Alone" is a rocker with a definate soul feel, which gives way to "Why Don't You See Me", a jazzy ballad. The band then cranks out a sharp shuffle, that recalls the 70's Albert Collins sound, followed by "Please Stop Seeing That Girl", a funky acoustic blues that showcases yet another facet of Cathy Jean's voice. Dancers in the crowd are served next with the catchy rocking blues, "I'm Your Girl", then comes the sultry "See You Tomorrow", and the acoustic country-blues of "Blues Singin' Alcoholic". Next up is the New Orleans style rocker, "I Want Your Mother To Know/Rotten B." which Cathy belts out with authority. This CD closes with a nice slow blues and a gospelish blues that is a inventive synthesis of genres. SUMMARY: Cathy Jean has come up with an energetic set of blues, jazz and contemporary-blues that fits the 90's to a T. She has real fire in her voice, and all of the music here is driven by a genuine sense of passion that makes the songs literally jump out at you from the speakers. A great mix of sophistication and downhome grease. --Al Handa, Delta Snake Daily Blues

CS: Chromatic Sizzle.......2007-07-11
Carl Saunders did not pioneer soloing from a lead trumpet point of view: Marvin Stamm, Doc, Maynard, Shew: so many have pulled it off that it's not surprising to hear it anymore. Many lead charts written for bands now have chord progressions right there in the 1st chair a la Gordon Goodwin. But when a set of jazz chops like Carl's meets lead chops like Carl's, well, you have me stumped for words. "Spectacular" doesn't quite cut it; he doesn't blow the house down. "Out of sight" isn't right either; Carl stays pretty much within the boundaries of the chords. It's really what he does with all those 12 notes.
"Intelligent, technically confident and preternaturally clever with a Mariah Carey range that only quits once he leaves the building, and even then I'd bet he pops high 'A's' in his sleep." I'll leave it at that. Why more folks don't have this guy on the top of their CD pile is nuts. Listen and learn. The Arban Cowboy, indeed!
Gotta get this one.......2007-01-19
Endearingly known to his friends as the Arban Cowboy, Carl is the greatest! I have all his CD's and look for him on other artists' recordings as well. He's ALWAYS the one to check out. Not to be overlooked - ever.
Long overdue.......2005-02-15
Trumpeter Carl Saunders has been a first-call player for West Coast big bands for many years, but he only started to record as a leader in the mid-1990s. This disc is his first crack at leading his own big band, & it is, as you'd expect, a superb disc. Saunders has stunning chops & imagination on the horn--he likes wide intervals & can hit high notes with a nice tone & pitch (rather than making them sound like sirens going off). But he's not a prima donna: in fact, the album is largely a tribute to the work of the late arranger/composer/trumpeter Herb Phillips: the album includes six of his charts, including the knockout opener "Compilation" (a brisk "I Got Rhythm" variant) and the lovely "An Apple for Christa" (a tribute to the ill-fated teacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe). The rest of the charts are shared out among various hands--Ivan Lins, Bill Rogers, Jackson Stock, John Boice, Mike Barone--& they all sound excellent: always warm rather than blaring, & never settling for slick riffing or excessive cleverness (though perhaps the multiple key-changes on "I'm All for You" are pushing it...). Saunders doesn't hog the limelight--in fact, on a few tunes he doesn't solo at all (Johnny Mandel's "Emily" is a trombone feature for Andy Martin, for instance). Pianist Christian Jacob sounds especially strong on his two features; my only quibble would be that the usually reliable alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan seems rather one-dimensional here, relying on the same formulaic Bird lick over & over again. But otherwise this is a very fine disc, recommended to fans of mainstream big-band music or to anyone looking for some first-rate trumpet.
"SIZZLER" !!!.......2005-01-06
Carl Saunders has gathered together the leading West Coast musicians and arrangers and recording technicians...AT THE PEAK OF THEIR POWERS...and created what will surely be a landmark "Big Band" recording. If you like flawless musicianship, this one's for you!
Wow!.......2002-11-02
If you are a jazz fan, if you appreciate the sound of a band comprised of some of the west coast's best players, if well-crafted, swinging arrangements are your cup of tea, if you are a trumpet player and want to feel totally inadequate, then you must get this CD! It is big band jazz as good as any you can hear. And the virtuousity of Carl Saunders is extraordinary! He possesses a beautiful sound, a very personal creative style, remarkable technical facility and a range that almost defies description! He can play lead, he solos imaginatively and I wouldn't be surprised if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound! The band members are the who's-who of west coast artists and they play like they play together all the time....which, of course, they do....in various settings. My highest personal recommendation on this recording!!

A beautiful, relaxing album........2001-06-14
I found this album on a vinyl LP many years ago when I was learning to play the Classical Guitar. Many of these 'classic guitar' tunes are helpful to learner and intermediate level players, and much of Liona's artistic playing can be adapted by the student player. This album provides relaxing, beautifuly played music that can be enjoyed over and over, both by musicians and non-musicians. A great buy, and recommended with Liona Boyd's "Miniatures" Classical Guitar music book.

A SIMPLY CLASSIC ALBUM.......2005-11-28
If you're a fan of the industrial, punk and alternative scene (especially in the UK) you'll know how special this band is.
Nobody out there fuses, jungle drum and bass beats, hardcore punk rifts and black humoured lyrics as well as these guys.
Forget Black Flag and Henry Rollins. If you're a fan of Jello Bafaria and want to hear one of the most innovative bands of the past 2 decades then get this album.
Distored programming never sounded so good!
Shining reinvention.......2005-08-12
I'd never heard any full length albums from Pitch Shifter prior to my purchase of this, their newest release, but from what I have heard in the past I thought I knew better than to expect something like this. Pitchshifter have gone techno in a big way, which will irritate many old fans to no end, but it's a development that, considered in regard to the success with which they've achieved their objective, I certainly welcome. Now, when I say Pitch Shifter have gone techno, I don't mean that in the same sense that some say Testament went death metal on "Demonic", nor is my remark comparable to the efforts of some overzealous Metallica bashers on the 'net who would have you believe they're now some kind of alternative band (yeah, I really hear the Blur influence there). If any of the songs on "www.pitchshifter.com" were stripped of vocals, they could easily wind up on somebody's mix CD and no one would know they didn't really belong there.
The vocals are pretty much the band's last ties to their metal roots. They haven't totally given up on guitars, but they're used in a manner more akin to KMFDM than, say, Entombed. I'm a big fan of techno myself, and since I didn't have much invested in Pitch Shifter's allegiance to metal in the first place, I can honestly say I've enjoyed this album immensely- time and again- in the last month. Nevertheless, there is something to be said in the loss of avant garde experimentalism present on the early albums, so with the gain in accessibility must come a certain loss of respectability. But, if you're not intent on putting the band on a pedestal, do yourself a favor and check this album out. Beats the Spawn soundtrack, that's for damn sure...
awesome cd.......2004-01-28
im a huge fan of digital hardcore, you know, atari teenage riot, ec8or, f noise and their ilk, and ive owned this cd since way before i started listening to that stuff. i realized after listening to this again not long ago that pitchshifter, at their core, are a digital hardcore band (at least on THIS particular album, earlier records (before infotainment) are much more metal driven, and later albums are a little nu-metalish). viewed as a dhc album, this record is really really good and very diverse, and accessible to anyone unlike most dhc bands. its too bad pitchshifter were never involved in that scene because they could have gained quite a few new fans.
How much better can it get.......2003-11-22
Pitchshifter at its finest. They take the industrial sounds of their early cd's. and combine them with more electronics. Some standout tracks include Microwaved and Genius. This album is beter than their later efforts. If you have never heard pitchshifter start here.
A solid performance from Pitchshifter.......2003-05-14
If your're a Prodigy fan, this album is a must-have. The band displays some of their best songwriting and techno skills in their latest release. The songs have more lyrics than most electronica, so the music preserves a punk-metal edge. The tracks get somewhat repetitive, but few of my other CDs spend as much time in the Walkman as this one. Note: this album comprises most of the Twisted Metal 3 video game soundtrack.

The best christian rep album up to date........2006-01-12
I have listened to a lot of Christian rep CD and this is truly the best one I have in my collection. It is hard to find good message with grate music but this album got it. Too bad Mr. Real doesn't have any new albums out after this one.
very real.......2000-10-07
great music i learned about him off of the muzik ta ride 2- #4 tape and he is an excellent artist. i especially like the duet betweet him and Ayeesha. Grapetree has some of the best artist and he is one of them.this tape is one of the best ;west side flavor.
Daaaaaaa' Booooooommmmmmmmmmbbbbbbbbbbbbbb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-30
Mr. Real is the best Christian Rapper ever! He takes god-sent lyrics and Dr. Dre-style music and puts them together. 'A Chosen One' features 17 rad gangsta-style tracks, which were barely fit onto one disc. Hiring Brian "Mr. Real" Hill onto the grapetree record label was grapetree president Knolly William's best move ever! The best tracks are 'World Wide', 'We Bring Tha', and 'Do Yo Dance'. I strongly suggest you buy this awesome album; it's definetely worth your money!
