This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.

How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29

War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.

The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.

The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. (It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.

Criminally Underrated.......2007-05-25

This album is phenomenal. Probably the best album ever released on No Limit. There really aren't words to describe how tight it is. Especially when you factor in how wack No Limit was getting in 98-99. If this dude had gotten a bigger nationwide push he'd be on top right now. He's in jail, keep your head up Mac! Well, besides what could have been, this album is a hell of a statement and a modern classic.

It's no secret the south is dominating the Hip-Hop/Rap industry right now.There's a lot of region hatin,because of those facts.People from other regions tend to attack the south(mostly East Coast),by saying they're not real Hip-Hop or there aren't any lyricist in the south.Which isn't true!Mac is the best lyricist out of the south(we have several more lyricist from the south as well)and one of the best lyricist in the industry period!It's a shame he went to jail a few months after he dropped this CD.The rap game really needs more rappers like him.This CD is a classic,you could let the whole CD play through without skipping a track!His other CD Shell Shocked is great too,but World War 3 is clearly a better CD than his previous CD!Mac spits intelligent,real and hot lyrics like no other!This CD is a must have,i'll advise anyone to cop this CD!It's hot and you wont be disappointed!Keep Ya Head Up Mac!

Filler: Still callin me is a far reach from the original Callin me on Mac's first album. Bottom Line: Mac is one the best emcees to came out of the south and this album further solidifies that point. This album has songs with a message attached to them(Genocide, Fathers day, Can you love me etc) which is way more than you will get from the average no limit artist. Its unfortunate that he got locked up. Hold your head up Mac.

Good album, but KMFDM has done better.......2007-01-12

I'll say straight up that I think a lot of reviewers were a little hard on this album. I agree that it's not KMFDM's best, but when you think about it there can only be one best. That's the definition of the word best. KMFDM trying to compete with it's former self is like trying to compete with KMFDM's former self. Let's not forget how good some of their earlier albums were. Will they ever top 'Naive', Nihil' or 'Angst'. Probably not very easily. Most of the original band members are gone now but Sascha K. is still keeping it together.
This album does have it's strong points. It is one of their most politically charged albums. But KMFDM still manages to have the occasional humor and pokes fun at themselves at times. So in my opinion I don't believe KMFDM has lost their identity entirely.

KMFDM/Progressionists Should Listen to this Album.......2006-11-11

This album may carry a different style that isn't traditional KMFDM, but its still all around "awesome." The lyrics are incredibly powerful, covered with quick beats and some hypnotic chants every now and then.

I don't know why some people didn't really enjoy this album but I love and still listen to every track on it.

kmfdm rarely have let me down. while their newest album "hau ruck" was a bit of a bad and disappointing album, this one owns. at first, i thought it was average and kind of boring, but once i listened to it all the way through, it was irresisable. great songs are from here on out, last things, stars and stripes, bullets bombs and bigotry. while is isnt near as good as nihil, xtort, or symbols, it is as good as adios which is also a great one.

they have always been kind of political since the beginning. just look at the title of their first album. i give props to any band that can make a listenable political album.

OK but..........2006-03-03

I am still new to KMFDM but I found this album a little disapointing when compared with Hau Ruck, which was my first and an outstanding CD! WWIII seemed a little less organized and with less direction. Overall its not bad, but it could have been better.

First of all let me just say this was my first KMFDM album. I bought it because I was getting into industrial and heard they were the best. I was disappointed because I was not expecting it to sound like this. However I kept on listening to it and realized it was genious. I have since been in a frenzy collecting all their stuff and I dont regret it one bit. I think KMFDM are alot like AIDS. You can screw around a lot and not get it, and than one day and BAM now you cant get rid of it.
My Highlight of the album are Blackball, Pity for the Pious,revenge, and last but not least stars and stripes. This may not be pure industrial like Neubaten, coil, or Frontline assembaly but it is great. From what I hear kmfdm are a fusion of Punk, metal,industrial, goth and ska. And finally I dont understand where some fans are coming from when they say this is too political. If you have ever been a KMFDM fan you would have heard songs like Glory, A drug agains war, and other political songs too numerous to count. The kapt'n Is one of the few people who have the balls too stand up and say the truth. 9-11 was actually an inside job.(Even though he doesnt actually say that. He inspired me to stop watching the idiot box and read. Now I no longer believe what I am told to believe.)There is too much evidence that it was the moron who was in charge that sept morning.( Try reading some books like Inside Job, and the new Pearl Harbor and tell me you think 19 hijackers who could barly fly a plane in flight school, and who also were allowed into the US with connections to Al-qauda could have took over those planes, and accomplish what they did without getting shot down)
Well enough of that Just go out and buy this great cd. However if you like your freedoms to be taken away( the patriot act) and you have no desire to question authority Amazon has a large selection of Toby Kieth cds. I only wish I was a fan from the beginning.

It's not very often these days to come upon a metal band that is just that,a metal band. When you pick up any Imagika
release you'll notice right from the start there are no DJ's no turntables, no beat samples,no rhymes, no dreadlocks,
adidas sweatpants, wallet chains or vans shoes. Imagika have done something in the bay area that's become the exception to the "rule", which is, they stayed true to the roots of Heavy Metal. Imagika are living proof that metal did not nor ever will die. In Addition, they've kept the fading spirit of the beloved San Francisco bay area thrash sound and attitude alive. From the first second of the intro to the final seconds of the last song Imagika are power, thrash,aggression, melody and thrash. Did I mention thrash? Forget about 11, this record is on 20.Imagika have not slowed down since their debut release. Each of the 9 songs is filled with heavy guitars, killer double bass and screaming insane vocals. Lyrically, the album is a crushing portrait into darkness and there's no light at the end of the tunnel.
"And So It Burns" also offers excellent production from Uwe Lulis (currently guesting with Iron Savior and working on new projects) which only serves to intensify the audible brutality of this compact disc. If you enjoy bands like Heathen, Testament, Forbidden, and so on then you should
own this disc. This is a band that stands on their own and
continues to release quality music and is 110% full of heaviness and intensity, without compromise.
Imagika has yet to be recognized in the way they deserve, which
is nothing short of a shame. Their contributions and musicianship are worthy of praise and respect.
No Metal Collection is complete unless you own this disc.

Thrash Attack.......2001-07-26

Are you sick of "nu-metal" bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Slipnot, and Disturbed? Do you long for the crunching rhythms, chaotic speed, excellent musicianship, and soaring vocals of classic 80's thrash? If you answered yes to the two above questions, then Imagika's And So It Burns will provide you with a definite breath of fresh air. If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD presents the marches and songs of the golden age of German sea power, with PERIOD performances by illustrious units of the Imperial German Navy and leading military- and civilian ensembles of the German Empire. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" features not only the most famous parade- and presentation marches from the core repertoire of the Kaiser s "High Seas Fleet", but also many forgotten treasures of nautically flavored German martial- and patriotic music. Included here are period pieces celebrating the First World War-era exploits of the SMS Emden, Otto Weddigen s U-9 and the raider SMS Moewe; a 1907 recording of the "Flag Parade" of the Imperial German Navy (complete with drill commands and including the "Hollaendischer Ehrenmarsch", which was designated as the presentation march for all naval units by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901); and a super-rare 1915 version of Hermann Loens battle song, "Wir fahren gegen Engelland", set to a score that has been completely overshadowed by Herms Niel's famous setting of that song from 1940. In addition to these rarities, the album features numerous German naval marches and concert band pieces of the Imperial era that are endowed with a distinctive maritime ambience, but are virtually unknown to today's listeners The performances assembled in this compilation were originally recorded between 1907 and 1917, and though the extremely rare early discs from which they have been transcribed date from the acoustic age of recording (that is, before the invention of electric microphones and pick-ups), they have been laboriously restored and reengineered to maximize the considerable fidelity already inherent to them without altering their historical authenticity in any way whatsoever. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" is accompanied by a TWENTY-FOUR PAGE BOOKLET (lavishly illustrated with many rare, never-before published photographs) which features detailed historical notes on the development of the Imperial German Navy during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, its musical traditions and the background of the featured musical selections.

Brandenburg Historica deserves much credit for releasing this and other historical CDs. The music sounds great and the booklet is very well-done and informative. Anyone with an interest in military music should certainly get this. Bravo!

Enjoyable trip into history.......2007-07-03

This is a very creditable work that preserves music of a bygone era. Original recordings are used to give an exact reproduction of the sounds of military music of the Kaiser's navy. Particularly interesting was the track where the U-9 march went off into a verbal reenactment of the U-boat attack.

The folks at Brandenburg Historica have done it again with Hoch Deutschlands Flotte. Twenty five (25) exceptionally re-mastered original 78 rmp recordings of navy marches, songs and other music, many by naval and seebattalion(marines)bands of the Kaiser's Navy. As with Brandenburg Historica's prior albums,the 19 pages of album notes and photographs are outstanding and second to none I have seen. It's a class act and does not get any better than this.

I just finished listening to this CD and it is a real gem. A rare look back at what the German navy was like in the Glory days of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany. Any one that is a Military Music enthustiast and/or interested in the history of this time period should not pass up this treasure. All the selections on this CD are first rate.

I enjoyed the cover album some. It is one of those (check out these new unsigned bands) albums. The covers of coarse have mustakes in places such as missing a spot and moving too fast or out of sink, but over all the sound is decent. I would suggest this album to only fans of Black Sabbath that have the albums already.1. N.I.B. (Performed by: Premoniction)- Just like the normal version tho the Ozzy Clone sounded like he was laughing through it. . . .85% 2. Heaven and Hell (Performed by: Born of Fire)- Sounds like a decent dio clone with a decent band. Nothing special. . . .80%3. Hole in he Sky (Performed by: Order of the illuminati)- Faster version sounding song, Dio-ish vocals. . . .80% 4. Into the Void (Performed by: Silencer)- Decent fast sound. destorted a little more than the normal version. . . .75%5. Born Again (Performed by: Tea Bag)- The vocalist comes close to the Deep Purple vocalist which is a plus. Being the only time I've seen Born Again covered, I was pleased to see a young band try such a cover. They performed it well. . . .95%6. Black Sabbath (Performed by: Mudslinger)- Think of vocals of a mix of Peter Steele of Type O Negative and Phil of Pantara. Death Metal Done Right.......2003-12-21

Though most bands have taken death metal and made it into some tirte and boring shell of itself, Hate has created a wonderfully heavy death metal album up there with the likes of the other great new(er) school bands (i.e. Blood Red Throne and Decapitated). 'Holy Dead Triniy' is really a great find...and really sounds like Morbid Angel if they didn't begin to s uck (sorry but 'Heretic' was terrible). The drumming on this record is surprisingly fresh, though it does still contain quite a bit of the expected blastbeat bombast, not that that is a bad thing of course. The vocals and lyrics are quite good, not to mention the excellent guitar driven insanity of it all. Song wise there really are no "skip tracks", they all are just little pieces of excellent death metal. It is really good to see band young band like Hate completely rip, shred, and kill their way into they metal scene as well as they did. Also, it is bands like these that keep the scene fresh and exciting. There is a flaw though, as several of the other reviews have pointed out, the unoriginality of it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't rock hard as he ll. A recomendation to all of you who want some death metal with heart and talent.

Good Polish death metal.......2003-04-19

I picked up Hate's second cd "Cain's Way" and I felt I needed to get this one as well. This debut cd is really heavy and that is a good thing. These guys continue along the vein of good Polish death metal....they are like Vader and Decapitated. If you like those bands you'll like this. Long live metal!!!

this album is everything you want in a death metal album. it's fast, loud, and offensive. but it loses 1 star for originality. but all in all it rocks hard.

Hate's "Holy Dead Trinity" isn't going to win any awards for originality in the world of death metal, but that's clearly not the aim. Instead, Hate is content to stick to the standard death metal forumla of blistering riffs, pummeling drums, and lacerating vocals. Throw in a hearse-full of lyrics that God wouldn't like, and you've got the prototypical old-school death metal CD. Very fast. Relentlessly brutal. Morbidly evil. And pretty darn good.

Overall, this is a well-written, well-performed, competently produced death metal album. But it's by no means a classic, and if you're a death metal fan you probably already have a CD in your collection that sounds a lot like it. Still, it's quality material from a promising band, and it's ulimately worth your consideration. It's the perfect CD to blare out the window on Halloween night to keep the trick-or-treaters away.

I know Michael Haas, executive producer. He has made a total commitment to locating and recording work of musicians whose work was banned by the Hitler regime because composers, etc. were even suspected to be Jewish, gay, gypsy, etc. One atheist or agnostic composer was sent to concentration camp because his father had been a Jew in the past.

This is needed to give a picture of the survival of music by talented people under duress.
