The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

5 out of 5 stars How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

On their label debut for Rounder, this Ohio-spawned quartet sticks closer to bluegrass tradition than many of the young progressive upstarts. Soaring harmonies, strong original material, and sprightly instrumental interplay distinguish the group's music, though NewFound Road has broadened its base beyond the gospel that it formed to play. An a cappella "When I Get Home" attests to the group's spiritual side, while the instrumental "No Clue" showcases impressive chops. Other highlights include a banjo-and-mandolin-driven transformation of "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," a huge fit for Freddy Fender; an acoustic revival of Ray Charles's "Leave My Woman Alone"; and a version of Tom T. Hall's "A Picture of Your Mother" that wrings from it every drop of pathos. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Richly-textured vocals & smart instrumental breaks in a classy repertoire.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 37:24 -- When I reviewed NewFound Road's "Somewhere Between" album (their third) a few years ago, I was convinced that they had the sound to take them to bluegrass stardom. Obviously, Ken Irwin of the reputable Rounder Records label agreed with me and signed them up. Formed in 2001, the band's first few releases were gospel projects, and then they went secular to avoid being limited by musical boundaries and to be able to present the wide variety of music that they love. As with their previous work, NewFound Road still features inspired picking, emotional singing, and powerful material. Besides four of their own originals, songs are drawn from Tim Stafford, Tom T. Hall, Roscoe Reed, David Paich, and others.

NewFound Road's invigorating approach incorporates breathtaking instrumental work with emotionally-evocative vocalizing. It's interesting that band's approach for their fourth overall album was to record live with very little overdubbing. NewFound Road is Tim Shelton (guitar), Randy Barnes (bass), Rob Baker (mandolin) and Junior Williams (banjo). Shelton achieved a fair amount of acclaim with his solo album, I Stand Amazed. Since their last album, bassist Tim Caudill has apparently moved on to other endeavors with Randy Barnes (formerly with Rhonda Vincent) filling the bassman's shoes. Another alumni of Rhonda's band, Baker won a share of the 2001 IBMA Entertainer of the Year award as a member of that group. Williams primarily picks the banjo, but he also plays some guitar on this project. He spent six years touring with The Bishops, a popular southern Gospel group. Guests Jim Van Cleve (fiddle), Rob Ickes (slide or resonator guitar), and Sonya Isaacs (vocals) appear in the sonic kaleidoscope of NewFound Road's overall sound.

"Cold Blue Day" begins the set in a right pert fashion. "Douglas Graves" is an engaging ballad, delivered in storylike fashion without harmony by Shelton, and embellished with the mournful wailing of slide guitar and fiddle. "I Miss You" was also arranged with only solo vocals. Besides just the credits, a few sentences about each song would have been helpful in the CD jacket. A nice refreshing change, Rob Baker's lead vocals deliver feeling in "Handsome Molly" and "In My Sleep." Jr. Williams sings lead for the sentimental "A Picture of Your Mother." However, Sonya Isaac's voice emerges in "Nothing's Missing" as their most compelling vocal collaboration on this album. Proving that they haven't turned their backs on God, the quartet delivers a stimulating a capella rendition of the spiritual "When I Get Home." A barn-burning instrumental, "No Clue" smolders with hot licks as they pick up the tempo for a wild, thrilling ride. Barnes played the bass line fairly straight on Freddy Fender's swinging country classic "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." More of a walking bass line, as well as some of Ickes' resonator guitar, would've energized this choice. Ray Charles' "Leave My Woman Alone" adapts well to bluegrass with its spiritually-tinged harmonies. For a little laid-back attitude, "Houston" is a dreamy song that brings the set to an end.

NewFound Road is a resourceful bunch whose strengths include richly-textured vocals and smart instrumental breaks in a classy repertoire. This project will surely launch NewFound Road to an even higher level of notoriety, and I recommend this album to fans of contemporary bluegrass with a few country and gospel trimmings. 4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Slightly more creative than AWAKENING, but not by much. There is money to be made here, however. I am sure there will be other pieces to follow by Curiale. Hope to see some definitive innovations in future compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Music that touches my soul.......2003-11-15

I was fortunate enough to be at the debut performance of "The Music of Life" in Akron in 2002. When I heard the swell of strings in "Prarie Hymn", I was transported to another time and place. It still has a tremendous effect on me every time I listen to it. Curiale has become my favorite composer since.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one CD this year..... buy this one!.......2002-06-05

Life: ever tried to sum up what it means? It's not something you'll likely be able to do in one hour, but if you have that much time to spare in your life, then buying and listening through once to this latest CD from Joseph Curiale would be an hour well spent. Trouble is, that one time through this disc just isn't anywhere near enough; listen once and you'll get hooked.

Curiale's first album, Awakening, was once described in a British magazine review as 'film music without the film', an opinion that kind of depends on whether one has the imagination to close one's eyes and see the pictures for oneself... not difficult with music of this level of filmic colour and imagination.

Music of Life begins with Tea in Chinese Camp, a triptych that takes its name from three Chinese teacups unearthed in a small Californian town and given to Curiale by a local historian there. Each movement of this opening work is as finely crafted and richly coloured as the ornaments from which they take their names and one can imagine clearly from the music the possible worlds that, by cradling the fragments of china cup, one holds in one's hand; erhu soloist Karen Han turns in an awesome performance throughout the hauntingly beautiful 'A Cup of Kindness'.

'Liquid Autumn' paints exquisite strokes about that most colourful of seasons - most notably with the liquid tone of French Horn player Stephanie O'Keefe. to whom the track is dedicated.

(I am skipping forwards a little now, but 1000 words is not nearly enough space to really tell you about Joseph of this disc...)

Halfway through the CD and one arrives at 'American Variation', a track which Curiale admits to being his "...symphonic Opus#1".
Written as an essay of the deep emotional experiences he had whilst living in Japan for many years, Curiale's 'American Variation' features two of the traditional instruments of Japan - the koto and shakuhachi - and conjures vivid imagery of a country which for me too has a deep emotional resonance. For anyone who has travelled to Japan, this work will doubtless take you straight back again and for anyone who has never been, Curiale and soloists paint a picture so vivid that one simply has to let one's eyelids drop to begin the journey. Any fans of the work of Ryuichi Sakamoto, especially his soundtracks (Last Emperor/Little Buddha) will find enormous enjoyment in Curiale's orchestrations and the rich and broad palette he uses in this work in particular.

'Shadow and Light' (track 10), like many of the works on the disc recorded in London's famed Abbey Road, brings together the extraordinarily talented violist Yuko Inoue, flautist Pippa Davies, Geoff Brown on English horn, Caroline Dearnly on cello and pianist Kelvin Thomson. Dedicated to artist Nao Otomo, 'Shadow and Light' celebrates and explores the middle-world between these two extremes; the delicate and rippling piano providing the ever-present line along which the other instrumentalists travel and inter-twine.

'Wind River' is a fittingly grand ending to this CD, bringing to bear the full force of The London Symphony Orchestra, in a work originally written for the University of Wyoming in recognition of the new millennium. Saturating himself in the state and all he could read about it for one year has made a work that lives and breathes in its form. The opening brass lines set the scene, and one feels the space and temple-like grandeur of the vista open. Curiale's brass and wind lines are what sing through in this piece, and are what give form to both the boldness and delicacy of the image of landscape he is conjuring.

There's so much more one could say about Music of Life, but really I would just say to you to buy it and by doing so to embark upon a musical voyage that no music-lover should miss.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the Music of Life.......2002-04-14

My words cannot do this music justice. The music of life? Yes, it is the music of life, and each time I listen to it, I feel the Earth dancing within me. Somehow, Joseph Curiale has found the very center of existence and painted it with sound. His music is the beauty of a single tulip poking its head through winter's snow. It is a ray of morning sunshine, damp grass between naked toes. It is the ocean's icy finger's caressing a human body, a rainbow on a stormy day, the peace of a summer's afternoon spent alone. It surely is the music of life, and my love for it continues to grow.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Curiale's life IS his music.......2002-01-17

"The Music of Life" by composer Joseph Curiale is an outstanding example of the most sublime music being written today. Beautifully orchestrated, rhythmically exciting, and emotionally uplifting, this second CD by Mr. Curiale is nothing less than a musical look into his very inner being.

Each composition offers us a glimpse into an intense personal relationship between the man and his art. He does not take composition lightly: composition for Mr. Curiale is an intense, exhausting experience, an outpouring of his entire heart and soul into his work. It is this deep personal expression that sets his compositions apart from his colleagues.

The composer, a master at orchestration, successfully melds Western sonorities with Oriental modalities, thereby creating a style of music uniquely his own. Listen to his "Tea in a Chinese Camp" featuring erhu artist Karen Han and to "An American Variation" to hear the influence that his years living in the Far East have left on him. On the other hand, listen to "Wind River (I Am)" to actually "hear" the great state of Wyoming in its entire natural splendor, and also to "Prairie Hymn", a hymn dedicated to the spirit of the American Heartland and its people.

This CD should be in every music lover's library as a fine example of the best of contemporary music today.

      4 out of 5 stars A great addition.......2005-08-20

Joan Morris and her husband, composer William Bolcom, take another trip back to the early days of Broadway musicals and earlier. In the same groove as their earlier albums, After the Ball and Vaudeville. A great addition to your collection if you love this kind of music, performed the way it was meant to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars Joan Morris and William Bolcom return to their roots.......1999-03-13

Back in 1974, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and her husband, William Bolcom, recorded "After the Ball," a collection of turn-of-the-century popular songs, some of which hadn't been recorded since the early part of the century, if ever. Now, after bringing their talents to the music of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and most recently, Vincent Youmans, they return to the turn of the century with this delightful collection. Note: no compromises were made with the original turn-of-the-century lyrics; this CD is not for those obsessed with "political correctness." But then, those obsessed with political correctness generally don't have much taste, anyway.

I have been listening to the "cemetary shoes" album. Okay now be warned before you rush into Johnny he is considered to be in the Genre of "PSYCHOBILLY" so if you do not have at least a passsing appreciation of Rockabilly, punk, goth, and alt country. So don't blame me if he scares the hell out of you or you just don't get it, but if you can get past any prejudices or dislikes you initially have of the music and really listen to the man, he has something to say and a very unique way of saying it. you can hear a few samples of Johnny on his website at www.johnnydowd.com Here are the lyrics to one of his songs that I really like the words to,

      Billy Blu

A crooked little man / lives in the underground
Sometimes he goes up / but mostly he stays down

People call him Billy / William is his name
In the coming darkness / he's the keeper of the flame

He repairs radios / with alien transistors
Cosmic commnication / between brothers and sisters

He has information / unavailable to most
He converses with angels / and sleeps with ghosts

Silence is a sadness / a bird with a song
Billy is a sailor / between right and wrong

A world of light and promise / is beyond his memory
In the present he is occupied / preparing for eternity

Lucifer is coming / don't let the children hear
The devil's in the wood pile / judgment day is near

Things that seem simple / are extremely complicated
When you scratch the surface / of things gold-plated

      © Johnny Dowd

I hope the more adventurous of you take a listen and give him half a chance and those less adventurous look at all the pictures of his pretty face (well at least that was the one good thing one young lady could find about him). On another interesting note about Johnny he didn't record his first album until he was 50 years old. Well guess I can't complain I didn't put out my first book until I was 34, and I had twenty odd years of material back logged. Which we can really blame on Bob because I really didn't think much of the "bits" I wrote until I heard SBR and I thought man I want to make statements like that. I look at Johnny's lyrics and it so often reminds me of the ways that I string words together. So take a listen, check out what he says, and always keep an open mind, remember don't judge a book by it's cover (or a book of poetry by it's title).

      2 out of 5 stars Meh........2004-11-12

Man oh man...you know I love JD, but this album is sort of making me question me faith. I question whether two stars is really fair, but I gave three to The Pawnbroker's Wife, and this is definitely inferior to that one, so that's what it's getting. The most obvious disappointment here--and I think most fans would agree with me on this--is the absence of the immaculate Kim Sherwood-Caso's vocal talents. This was always a big part of the appeal of any Dowd album; she made good songs into stunning songs, and I suspect that, even if the ones here aren't as good as usual, she could have partially redeemed some of them. I certainly hope the two of them haven't had some sort of falling out, and that we'll hear more of her in future Dowd recordings.

Here's what's good about this album: the frenzied 'Garden of Delights.' I would say that this is the one song here that approaches classic status; an unnervingly intense tale of murder/suicide. Also pretty good: 'Wedding Dress,' with its entertaining southern gothic lyric (maybe Dowd should write books). That and 'Brother Jim' have a gospel feel to them (even if one's about a crossdressing butcher and the other a clerical murderer). 'Whisper in the Nag's Ear' might be okay on its own, but it just seems pointlessly overdone compared to the spare original version on Pictures From Life's Other Side.

But...most of the songs are just kind of there. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not exactly exciting either. I expect a lot more from the guy who wrote 'Worried Mind' and 'Hell or High Water.' Better luck next time.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, smart, interesting music.......2004-11-09

Johnny Dowd makes me appreciate having ears to hear with and a mind to think with. Here is a man who, in a just world, would enjoy the success that more commercial musicians do today; that he does not is a real crime (then again, the world's loss is his fans' gain). His music is deep, dark and thoughtful, but well crafted, like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The tunes take some getting used to, as does his voice, because they cover material not usually associated with today's homogenized and emasculated pop and radio scene. But like most acquired tastes, you wonder how you ever got along without it. He writes music like the moon casts shadows, makes you look over your shoulder, and consider your fate. His albums, including his recent, Cemetary Shoes, deal with topics from the seamy side of life, a portion of the world that is anathema to the Britneys, the Jessicas, and the other pop tarts of music. If you appreciate artistry, thought and challenge, check out the Dowd catalog. Stretch your imagination a little. Take a chance on his music and experience an enveloping warmth that is cognition and emotion melding.
