Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

All Handel's Greatest Hits are not created equal........2004-02-25

Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Back from Oblivion - Volume 4.......2007-04-13

Music from the 1980's was often unusual. Music went several directions after the demise of Disco, seeking new sounds and ideas. Big hair bands, New Wave and a host of other styles came and went. Though most of these styles failed to catch on, collectively this music represents an array of unique and unusual music. Most of these songs were released as singles and made at least the top 100 either in the U.S. or the U.K. A few did not. Most of these songs are great reminiscences of the 1980's, and fans of 80's music should find a lot of music to refresh their musical memories and broaden their musical horizons.

The songs, chart position (from the CD booklet) on the U.S. Hot 100 and the U.K. Top 75, and a brief comment:

(1) Dance Hall Days; U.S. #16. This song has a mature sound that may remind some listeners of David Bowie in the same era. This song was one of Wang Chung's biggest hits.

(2) One Thing Leads to Another; U.S. #4; U.K. #86. This bouncy dance song was The Fixx's biggest hit and also made it to #2 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart and #14 on the U.S. Dance 50.

(3) True; U.S. #4; U.K. #1. Spandau Ballet was an English group with many charting singles in the U.K. In 1983, they broke into the U.S. charts and achieved their greatest success with this ballad.

(4) Come On Eileen; U.S. #1; U.K. #1. This quirky, award winning song made Dexys Midnight Runners a one-hit wonder in the U.S., but the group was successful in the U.K. in the 1980's until the group disbanded in 1986.

(5) Digging Your Scene (U.S. Single Version); U.S. #14; U.K. #12. This sophisticated song contains an array of influences from earlier eras and was The Blow Monkeys biggest U.S. hit.

(6) Sister of Mercy (Single Version); U.K. #11. The Thompson Twins had a series of hits in the U.S. and the world. This mellow song is representative of the group's music.

(7) Under the Milky Way; U.S. #24. This beautiful song is one of The Church's biggest hits. The haunting music just begs to be played over and over. This song is also a good reminder that Australia has great musicians.

(8) Lean On Me; U.K. #3. This tune is quite catchy and fun to hear. Red Box never did have a hit in the U.S., though this song seems like it could have done well in the 80's in the U.S.

(9) Since Yesterday; U.K. #5. The song is cute and made Strawberry Switchblade one hit wonders. The attractive Scottish ladies were unable to duplicate their success with this song and disbanded well before the decade ended.

(10) You Don't Know; U.S. #20. This pop song by Scarlett & Black is very catchy and helped give this duo a one-hit-wonder.

(11) Some People; U.S. #67; U.K. #33. This song is average 80's music but become one of Belouis Some's biggest hit. His real name is Neville Keighley. One of his songs made an appearance in "Pretty in Pink."

(12) Shock; U.S. #84. This song is faster with a slightly harder edge than most of the songs in this collection. The Motels had other, bigger and better songs than this one.

(13) Belly of the Whale; did not chart. Burning Sensations had a short history that included this song. The song has a lot of Reggae influence, which makes it unique on this album.

(14) Tenderness; U.S. #27. General Public came and went, leaving behind a few songs such as this minor hit.

(15) Get Out of London; U.K. 93. Though Intaferon was in and out of the public eye so quickly that you might have missed them, this song enjoyed another moment of fame when it was chosen for the soundtrack of the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie, "Winning London." The song is one of the faster songs in this collection with interesting electronic sound effects.

(16) Go; unknown chart position. Tones on Tail's music was psychedelic and surreal, and thus generally not in the mainstream. However, this unusual song has become a favorite at retro dance clubs. When you listen to it you will see why.

(17) Slang Teacher; unknown chart position. This funky song was one of the few recorded by Wide Boy Awake. Kevin Mooney helped form this short-lived group that never released an album. Mooney's claim to fame was a stint as the bassist for Adam and the Ants.

(18) Lawnchairs; U.K. #49. Sometimes American bands invaded the U.K. Our Daughter's Wedding had a minor hit in the U.K. with this song that was never released in the U.S. The group quickly disappeared into oblivion.

(19) Mexican Radio; U.S. #58; U.K. #64. Quirky music sold well in the early days of MTV as long as there was a video, as Wall of Voodoo proved with this minor hit. This song ended up being their only charting song, though the group continued to release albums until their breakup in 1988.

Musicians experimented with many different sounds in the 1980's as a new generation looked for something different from music of the early 70's and disco. Many groups were formed, had one hit or semi-hit, and then broke up. What remained is an eclectic collection of songs that may be dated, but are still a lot of fun to hear. These songs may not be the best songs of the 1980's but they do capture the feeling of the era. Be glad that these songs were rescued from oblivion.

Dynamite compilation of non-typical 1980's hits!.......2005-11-30

The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".

There is no doubt that "Mickey" by Toni Basil was a huge hit. There's also no doubt that "Our Lips are Sealed" was a break out hit for the Go Go's, but the Funboy Three version wasn't. But what about "Living in a Box"? It only hit the Billboard top 100 at #89 in 1987. So why is it here? Why are a large number of these songs? They're not top 10 hits, right?

Wrong!

I'm sick to death of so many compilations relying on top 40 hits from the 80's. The U.S. music tastes are typically very different from those of Europe. Just because a song doesn't make the U.S. Billboard top 40 doesn't mean that it isn't a hit in other countries. And although I'm an American, my music tastes have always run more in line with those of Europe.

I'm delighted that the Living in Oblivion series (and the Pop and Wave series) have incorporated a variety of hits from the U.S. and Europe.

I also like that some of the more obscure groups and their songs are available on these compilations. There are several songs on these albums that never were released on CD (as they hadn't come into being at the time of the groups' albums initial releases), so albums such as these are the only place where you can find these hits. The Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" hit the Billboard charts at #12 in 1986, but the group disappeared soon thereafter. Then all of a sudden a dance version of that same song came out in the early 2000's and rocketed up the dance charts.

Don't be misled, the Living in Oblivion series is one of the absolutely best series for a variety of music from the 80's. If you want to hear run of the mill, top 40 only hits from the 80's, well, then you'll just have to look elsewhere.

Also, the liner notes and pictures of the groups included in the jewel box are really clever. You get to find out what the chart position was for the songs in the compilation and see what the groups looked like at the time of the song's release. My only issue with these liner notes is that the author of them seems to be disparaging the very music which these albums are espousing. Apparently many believe that the music from the 80's was vacuous and devoid of emotion. One need only listen to the song "The Promise" by the group "When in Rome" (Living in Oblivion Volume 5) to know that such a statement is false. While that group only had this one hit and then faded into obscurity, "The Promise" made the Billboard Top 100 at #11 and the Billboard Dance Chart at #1.

Anyway... I can't recommend this album and its entire series any more! It's simply awesome! Before believing those who would disparage this series of albums, please check the Billboard charts and you'll see that these songs were in fact hits.

This is the type of 80s compilation i would go for it contains a lotof hits you cant find in any other compilations exspecially songs like Get Out of London - Intaferon and Sister of Mercy - Thompson Twins are something hard to find in other compilations i bought this album because it features Digging Your Scene [US Single Version] - The Blow Monkeys and also for Go! - Tones on Tail

Living Oblivious.......2004-09-20

There are some tracks on this disk that (thankfully) I had never heard of. However, there are a few songs here that are very difficult to find.

Belly of the Whale - Burning Sensations. In fact it was for this one song that I bought the CD.

Get out of London - Intaferon. As previously mentioned this is a hard song to locate.

Also, WangChung, Tones on Tail and the Thompson Twins add to the value of this disc (for me at least.)

Some gems, some better forgotten.......2004-08-06

As with any compilation, some tracks you already have, some you want, and some you don't really care for. The selling point for me was the inclusion of Intaferon's 'Get Out Of London' - REALLY hard to find on CD - and I'd rather get it on this for a handful of bucks than on the Olsen twins' Winning London soundtrack for maybe 3 times the price.

Thanks for the memories........2006-05-28

This CD features 65 Television theme songs from the late '40s to the early '60s. Most of the more famous shows from this era appeared on Volumes 1 and 2 of this series, so there are some pretty obscure shows on this one. Who remembers "Karen" or "The Everglades"? Of course, there are also some fondly remembered shows, like "Tennessee Tuxedo", "Make Room For Daddy" and "The Untouchables". But there isn't quite as much nostalgia value for me this time around, since many of the themes are from shows I never saw.

Not My Favorite!.......2001-12-06

A few years ago when I was in a TV theme phase I got all the Television's Greatest Hits CD's and most of the collection is good but I was disappointed with Vol 4, probably because I have never heard the majority of these themes and I was bored with The CD, the only themes I have ever heard are Lassie, Make Room For Daddy, Father Knows Best, Ozzie and Harriet, Davy Crocket, Gunsmoke, The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and Candid Camera, the rest are TV shows that I have never seen syndicated reruns of so I don't know their themes. I guess a person should just stick with the Television's Greatest Hits CD's that have themes of TV shows that they actually grew up watching or saw on Nick at Nite or TVland.

Inconsistent, but still great.......2000-05-02

Lots of fun, and I'm glad to have it, but can you really claim any artistic merit for the Roger Ramjet song?

Two other minor points: It's kind of silly to have The Wonderful World of Color on an album called Black and White Classics. Also, I was extremely disappointed in the Fugitive cut without the voiceover. Come on -- is your most vivid memory the music, or William Conrad's voice, " Dr. Richard Kimble, an innocent victim of blind justice..."?

Still, I'm glad I have it. Where else are you going to find Beany & Cecil, Captain Midnight, Soupy Sales, etc. A lot of old friends are here.

The words of Bob Hope's theme song say it best -- "Thanks for the memories."

One of my all time favorites.......2006-09-22

I first purchased this CD many years ago after hearing it on a local classical station. It has long been one of my favorite CDs, classical or otherwise. The tracks demonstrate what I consider to be some of the best of baroque music. I often listened to it on long car trips or when relaxing at home. Unfortunately, I lost my copy and have been looking for another. I certainly hope that it is re-issued in the near future. I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in classical music. Or anyone that just likes to sit back and relax to the sound of a mellow classical piece.

An Amazing Year.......2005-12-04

This Top 10 of 1720 is an awesome collection of fantastic songs. They are well-played; the sound is rich and sometimes haunting. The pieces are played slowly--they are long compared to most other albums with the same selections. For example, Albinoni's Adagio is 10:17 minutes long in this album. It's 8:24 on Essential Classics' "Baroque Masterpieces" (B00005YQL6) & 6:58 on The Eroica Trio's "Baroque" (B00002SWU0). However, Pachelbel's "Canon" is 5:40 here, 6:29 on "Baroque Masterpieces," and 4:28 on American Express' "Tranquil Seas." Perhaps my favorite selection though is Bach's "Air" BWV1068 which is 4:55 here but 4:03 on volume 2 (Bach) in the Masters of Classical Music collection (B000001VU5). This is, perhaps, the favorite album in my collection. Rivalled only by EMI Classics' Baroque Telemann, Concertos & Sonatas (B000002S5Z) and The Masterpiece Collection, volume 7: Baroque. Hopefully, the CD will become available again soon.

I'm apparently not the only one..........2005-04-10

It's amusing and kind of comforting to see others, here, writing about childhood associations with this album. In cassette form, it was a staple of family car trips back in my '70s youth. But I'm pretty sure it's not just nostalgia that makes this collection a swell anytime listen.

I confess that I am not a classical expert. I've got a few Mozarts, a few Bachs, a few Beethovens, just enough to make my collection seem "respectable" should someone of culture take it upon themselves to browse. Sometimes one of those classical cuts pops up on my iTunes shuffle-play, and I appreciate it and all... but I can't say it quite moves me the way a good pop tune does.

That's where this record comes in. The title is apt: these are the hits -- the classical tunes you know, whether you realize it or not. They're not epic, they're not bombastic... they're evocative, downright catchy, human-sized numbers played crisply and well. They are the pop tunes of their day.

Highly recommended for newcomers to classical. And since it's also a favorite of my classical-obsessed parents, I guess experts appreciate it, too.

absolutely the best for the last twenty-five years.......2005-01-16

This recording/collection came out before I was born, and my mother used the record to soothe me to sleep as an infant, later purchasing my own copy when I was a bit grown so that I could listen to it to fall asleep every night, even when I spent the summers away from home. I continued to listen to it until intermediate school, when sleep stopped troubling me, but the music was etched on my brain. Just hearing any one of the magnificent pieces on this recording puts me inmind of the others.
Now, years later and with chronic insomnia, I find that this albim (along with Richard Satie's work) is one of the few things that can soothe my fractious soul to relaxation and sleep.

I highly recommend it for any fans of classical music, and even for those with young children. It is simply some of the most beautiful music ever written.

My absolute favorite LP and now CD.......2001-02-20

I first heard this LP when we were in Toronto in the 1980's. I LOVED it then and I bought the LP. Now I have the CD and listen to it often. I never tire of it. Absolutely wonderful to listen to (over and over again). It is a perfect gift to give to friends and relatives. It is "my soul's" music.

Most of songs were very goood.......2006-03-22

I really like Baroque Music, especially piano. Most of the songs were good recordings. One song of special note: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring was a very poor recording on this CD. This CD was purchased just for this one song. I was a little disappointed, but the rest of the songs turned out great. All in all, still a worthwhile CD.

Wonderful collection of Baroque music.......2006-02-27

Know who the best piano player of the 17th century was? I didn't until I read the liner notes in this collection. While all the music was written for harpsichord (since the piano wasn't invented until the 18th century) this album is a very entertaining introduction to a nice collection of Baroque masterpieces. Eminently listenable album.

I absolutely love this classical piano CD. It consists of various classical pieces performed solely by a piano. You have the usual--Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and The Harmonious Blacksmith-- and numerous sonatas all mixed together. The songs are expressed so beautifully with a full range of dynamics and speeds. This is one of the VERY few cds that I like all the songs

The final chapter of Kylie's Greatest Remix Hits albums is this one. It includes 18 great tracks, spread out onto 2 discs, all in 1 great package!

Some of the best tracks are the remixes of What Do I Have To Do, Things Can Only Get Better, Made In Heaven, Let's Get To It, Step Back In Time and Finer Feelings is a great instrumental version but all of the tracks are great.

You can always rely on Kylie for the best remixes, old songs or new, so pick this up now. Not to say you musn't pick up Volumes 1, 2 & 3 either because if you can find them, don't hesitate to buy them!

To get to know a little more about the remixes on this disc, I will go through the tracks and say a little bit about them.

Disc 1 is first. First you get a very danceable remix of What Do I Have To Do. There are 2 remixes of The Locomotion on Disc 1. The first is similar to the australian version of the song and the second is kind of like an extended version. Made In Heaven provides a dub version where Kylie's vocals dip & rise all over the place! Wouldn't Change A Thing is very 'rare' and funky. Better The Devil You Know is a bit softer than the original version. Things Can Only Get Better and Let's Get To It are extended versions. Let's Get To It is remixed by Tony King. What Kind Of Fool was remixed by Pete Waterman and is kind of like an extended version.

Then you get Disc 2. I Should Be So Lucky is an extended version with some new piano beats. The third remix & final of The Locomotion is a slightly different version to the album one. Hand On Your Heart is another great remix. I Am The One For You is a new unreleased track. Step Back In Time is remixed by Tony King and has some new sounds added. Too Much Of A Good Thing is an extended version. If You Were With Me Now is a beautiful orchestral track with Keith Washington. Finer Feelings is an instrumental track and the orchestra arrangment (or atleast that's what it sounds like!) is amazing. Celebration nicely rounds off this great double dose of remixes!

The best of the Remix Hits is this one but I strongly suggest that you pick up all 4 of them to make the set. This album is so great! I'd give all of the tracks 10/10 apart from the Locomotion Remix (Boy Meets Girl) which i'd give 9/10.

Great, but "99 Luftballoons" is the English version.......2000-03-13

I'm not sure I'd call these the "greatest" hits of the 80's, but they are certainly among the bounciest from an era when rock was still fun. There are only ten songs, but any CD with "Take On Me," "I Ran," "Mickey," "99 Luftballoons" and "Call Me" has got to be pretty great. All ten songs have a very catchy beat -- this makes a great CD to work out to. The video for just about every one of these songs has to be buried inside your brain somewhere -- this CD could be called a retrospective of the most-played videos from the early era of MTV. The sound quality is excellent, which is always one of my main concerns with a compilation of this sort. Be forewarned that "99 Luftballoons" is the English-lyrics version. Most people prefer the German-lyrics version, but it's still a great song.
