A veteran from the late '80s, Masta Ace had an old soul even when he was young. As far back as 1993's Slaughtahouse, Ace was backlashing against gangsta posturing and fake thuggery--before it became trendy to do so. His career has been uneven (if not invisible) during the past decade, but A Long Hot Summer is the dark-horse candidate for the season: a well-crafted concept album that has Ace spreading stoop wisdom. He's sentimental, to be sure, but not overwrought or ironic; his is a more meditative, relaxed attitude, matched by his smooth flow. His production team goes international, with French and even Eastern European beat-makers joining in, and they lay down a jazzydelic vibe that complements Ace's reflective manner. Ace claims that he's retiring after this album, but if it's his swan song, A Long Hot Summer is a fine, fitting closure to a career that has been rejuvenated in its autumn years. --Oliver Wang

Product Description
This summer is gonna be especially hot as Masta Ace gets set to drop his 5th full length album ‘A Long Hot Summer’. After his critically acclaimed 2001 masterpiece ‘Disposable Arts’, Ace returns with the prequel. In an era of disjointed rap albums that are typically an uneven mixture of hits and filler, ‘A Long Hot Summer’ sets itself apart, by telling a compelling story through it’s incredible songs & interludes.

Packed with warm, soulful beats from some of the games best producers; this conceptual album follows the life of an underground rapper trying to make his way through the mean streets of Brooklyn. With guest appearances by The Beatnuts, Big Noyd, Edo G., Jean Grae, Punch & Words and Rahzel, ‘A Long Hot Summer’ succeeds in maintaining it’s cohesiveness throughout the riveting storyline.

The lyrics are deep and introspective. The songs are colorful and panoramic; forming what should be one of the best albums of the year and one of the most consistent Hip-Hop albums in recent memory.

Released just one month after the Surfer Girl album, Little Deuce Coupe was, incredibly, the band's fourth album in less than a year. Brian Wilson and the band responded by turning in arguably their most consistent effort to date--and a concept album, to boot. Deuce Coupe expanded the band's subject matter to encompass 1963 America's burgeoning love affair with hot rods, surrounding previously released cuts such as the title track, "409," and others with strong new material (much of it cowritten by Wilson and a DJ, Roger Christian). A highpoint: the a cappella James Dean tribute "A Young Man Is Gone" (a reworking of Bobby Troup's beautiful "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring"), a prime example of Wilson's arranging genius and the band's vocal prowess. All Summer Long was notable not only for racheting up the band's standards and essentially bidding farewell to the surf songs that inspired both their name and reputation, but also for going toe-to-toe with one of rock's most explosive phenomena--Beatlemania--and coming away victorious, with the single "I Get Around" soaring to No. 1 in the spring of 1964. Essentially another loose concept record (revolving around the innocent hedonistic pursuits of an idyllic SoCal summer) that takes its cue from the effervescent title track, it also documents Brian's restless creativity pushing the band toward its performing peak. Bonus takes include the superior single take of band staple "Be True to Your School," alternate takes of "Little Honda" and "Don't Back Down," and the slightly salacious outtake "All Dressed Up for School." Both albums have also been sonically burnished via 24-bit digital remastering. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Two of their Best.......2007-07-25

If you are a hardcore Beach Boys fan and love them all the way from their first 45(Surfin on Candix), through all of their albums starting with Surfin Safari to their most recent release, you will see the quantum leaps they made in musical maturity with every album. I personally love them the most when they had their signature "Beach Boys" sound, probably through to "Pet Sound" where their sound markably changed. You saw hints of the changes to come in the couple of albums prior to "Pet Sounds" but it matured into full bloom then. They have always had though no matter what their instrumental style was their trademark vocal arrangements that Brian patterned after the Four Freshman songs he loved. And no one does it better or has come close to although we are seeing vocal groups begin to come back recently. These 2 albums(Little Deuce Coupe & All Summer Long)I think have some of their best signature songs/hits at a time when Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were really hitting their stride. They have all of the youthful exuberance and energy we love them for, but with some experience and polish that the two previous albums didn't have. They are in their Car/Hot Rod period but there are still some Beach/Surf songs too(although this kind of is their swan song there), the Girl songs are always there as well. If you love them for their sound at this time, probably starting with LDC and continuing up to but not including Pet Sounds, these are their best albums vocally, instrumentally, and of course in production(on Brians end). There are some extra tracks which in some cases are pure joy when finding a killer rocking song(I loved All Dressed Up for School). This CD with 2 albums is an absolute essential to anyones Beach Boys music collection. Don't get me wrong, I love just about everything Brian and the Beach Boy's have done, including one of Rock and Roll's classic albums of all times(Pet Sounds), but this is the Beach Boys I fell in love with and will play over and over again, period. I just wish there were more music like this today, but it isn't being done and it also was a place and time that has long been gone. Get these and sit back and enjoy their Sun drenched/Hi Revving genius.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not braggin', babe, so don't put me down........2006-09-20

This CD features two Beach Boys albums.

Little Deuce Coupe was the Beach Boys' fourth album. It features a bunch of their car songs. Four of the songs had been on previous Beach Boys albums. Most of the songs are very good. One of the highlights is the moving a capella tribute to James Dean, "A Young Man is Gone".

All Summer Long was the Beach Boys sixth album. It also has a "theme", of sorts, that being "fun in the summertime". It was the Beach Boys best album at that point. It features their first #1 hit, "I Get Around". Other than that, it features a number of other songs that are considered to be Beach Boys classics; including "All Summer Long", "Little Honda", "Wendy" and "Girls on the Beach". No bad songs, although "Our Favorite Recording Sessions", which features outtakes of the Beach Boys messing up, is definitely "filler".

There are four bonus tracks; including the superior single version of "Be True To Your School", the previously unreleased "All Dressed Up For School", and alternate takes of "Little Honda" and "Don't Back Down". Any Beach Boys fan should enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An EXTREMO good album.......2006-01-02

This album has lots of their original stuff on it including their hit "Little Deuce Coupe"obviously. My Favorite Song is "Drive - In" on this album. I have an "opinion" about the Beach Boys... They're GREAT!!!!!!! I've seen a Beach Boys concert before that had almost EVERYTHING.... But all Beach Boys concerts now-a-days do.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, clever, and beautiful.......2007-06-02

Fifteen years into his rap career, Masta Ace was a well-seasoned veteran who despite his incredible talent never received the attention or respect he deserved. From his days in Marley Marl's legendary Juice Crew, the Brooklyn native has been releasing truly awesome hip hop albums well under the mainstream radar. His fifth release, 2004's "A Long Hot Summer," is among the best musical projects he's ever been involved with. By this point, Ace had been used and abused by major labels, and his disillusionment with the hip hop game shows on this effort. "A Long Hot Summer" is a loose concept album, serving as a prelude to the story that takes place on his 2001 album Disposable Arts. The story follows Ace and his friend Fats Belvedere as they live their lives in Brooklyn, get involved in some laundering scandals, and head to jail. Ace proves to be a truly enlightening rapper. He is a real talent as a lyricist, a great vocabularist capable of executing ingenious metaphors and storylines. But what I enjoy most about Ace is his passion. He is so emotional and dramatic on this album that you can really feel his pain, depression, or wonder on the different songs. "A Long Hot Summer" showcases very solid east coast production, but the spotlight shines on Ace throughout. A crew of guests make nice appearances, enhancing the story and songs with great chemistry as well. The quality of this music is really incredible, the only complaint I might have is that the album's a little long at 22 tracks. In any event, this is a really inspiring and beautiful work, an underappreciated "mastapiece," and one of the greatest hip hop albums of the last five years.

The intro sets the scene for the story. In the "down and out" New York City, Ace and his homeboy Fats Belvedere are counting money in a Motel 6 when the police burst in on their party, and Ace begins to recount the entire summer's journey from jail. "Big City" is the first full song, and Ace profiles his hometown as a dangerous yet prideful place, talking about its inhabitants and ways of life. He also drops a message about how he perceives the government locks up black people for trying to make a living. "Good Ol Love" is a strong track both lyrically and musically, his verses are heartfelt and personal, and the chorus is very nice. "Da Grind" is a very well-produced shout out to people struggling to make ends meet. Both Ace and Apocalypse drop some thoughtful lines. "H.O.O.D." continues in the same vein, discussing the hardships of the ghetto in a dramatic yet affectionate style. The two best songs on the album follow. "Beautiful" is a truly gorgeous song where Masta Ace comments on the beautiful things he sees in the world. The beat is, well, beautiful, nostalgic and contemplative, and Ace's rhymes and chorus are inspiring. This song shows what a powerful performer he really can be. I think my favorite song, though, is "F.A.Y." featuring Strick. This song is really emotional, but also totally hilarious. The two rappers trade depressed verses about the struggles of the music industry and feeling dealing with depression, yet they're very funny and display chemistry ("Strick told me I should quit playa hatin', but f...k it, I'm not a quitter!"). The beat and chorus on this song are perfect as well, catchy and fitting. "Soda and Soap" is a conceptual gem featuring Jean Grae (hip hop's greatest female MC?), where the deep rhymes are delivered metaphorically through the names of soft drinks and cleaning products. The beat is also excellent on this song. Queensbridge vet Big Noyd guests on the rough "Do It Man," which continues the procession of excellent beats as well. "Brooklyn Masala" is a subtle, toned song with sweet rhymes to a beloved girlfriend. "Travelocity" is a solid track but not a highlight, just entertaining. "The Ways" is about corruption in major labels, and how some rappers use violence to get deals. Ed O.G. shows up on "Wutuwanko," where the two squash rumors about their careers and chronicle their music lives. The hook is really nice on this song. The Beatnuts lace "Oh My God," but the beat's just average, this is actually probably the weakest track on the album. The last full song, "Revelations," reminds me of an Eminem song, it's a very personal narrative of the thoughts going through his mind. "Outtakes" is a clever closing, it's like a blooper reel at the end of a movie.

Like the rapper himself, "A Long Hot Summer" did not receive the credit it was due, and is a little hard to find in stores now. East coast heads should consider this a must-buy, Ace's passion and entertainment value are at times unmatched. Even if you're not familiar with him and his winding career, this is an album you can appreciate and love just the same.

5 out of 5 stars If You Don't Know This Name.....You Have Been Living Under A Rock.......2007-01-27

Masta Ace's Long Hot Summer is 24 tracks of beauty(the best word I can come up with). This 15 plus year veteran hasn't lost a step....still crisp as his debut back in the late 80's, Ace is quick to stress that he refuses to crossover or sellout to sell albums. My standouts would have to be "Da Grind" which talks about the life of a hip hop artists and the stress, trials and tribulations of that lifestyle with a lavish production to match the groove. My second favorite cut would have to be "H.O.O.D."....which is self explanatory...Ace talks about life in the ghetto and the struggles of overcoming it. The production on this album is some of the best I have ever heard. Those who are sold on bling-bling, money, cars and women who believe that cats like Young Jeezy and Eminem are the best thing in hip hop since sliced bread need to get a hold of this album as a reality check. A must have for any old head who knows of the old school Ace as well as any newcomers.

5 out of 5 stars Ausar007.......2007-01-13

Masta Ace the Modern Ideal rapper with an album called the "Long Hot Summer" explains the New York Issues, and dilemmas. He expresses a better way for living, While in the Jungles of New York City he manages to keep his mind balanced. He definitely gives us a view on how it is to keep up the pace in the rap world. how can anyone struggle without improvement is impossible in his music album called the "Long Hot Summer". He Keeps the faith and a well overview of living in a mixed society of beliefs. He Gives to the fans the insight in his work, explains there's only one type of work ["The Good Work"]. He Usually says the music business is a business of Rhyme skills along with intelligence. He provides Conscious Listeners how money can come and go in the music business , so which means his game gotta be tight. Listening to Masta Ace is like listening to your favorite radio announcer, he never leaves his new york fans and abroad without the scoop. In The "Long Hot Summer" there are features like "Edo G." [Overlooked Entertainment] from boston, The beatnuts & Razel, & [Rocksteady Crew] Big Noyd [infamous mob family], Apocalypse, Jean Grae, Leschea, Strick, & Punch & Words.
"Good Ol Love" makes everyone like all types of music, the blend and mix is like universal and the Upbeat tempo keeps it going." Do it Man" Has this Chinese theme anthem at the begining that introduces" Big Noyd". You will probably press rewind twice or three times.... "Oh My God" has that Harlem effect with beatnuts and rahzel on the beat. We can't forget "Da Grind" where all concepts in surviving applies. It's a cool Jazz of conscious rap music. "Soda & Soap" has alot of analogies, and rhymes , and i can't forget about the skits featuring fats belvedere. Fats Belvedere and "The Ways" is a monster mix. The rest of the album remains a 5 star rating starting with " Beautiful, Hood, and Tavelocity".

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough...........2007-01-09

This is a straight hip hop classic. Is it because Ace is a legend but at the same time stays hungry? Or is it because the beats on this album are def? Or is it b/c it's a concept album (rare for hip hop)? The answer is, all of the above. I got this album when it first came out and it stayed in my CD player for a few months. I recently dusted it off and placed it back in the player and Wow! That's why this album is a classic. It is still better than half the stuff that came out in 06. It's just a shame that Ace retired after this album b/c "nobody is listening". Ace, you got one fan over here who is listening. Hope you come back and drop more gems like this one.

5 out of 5 stars I must admit.................2006-12-28

I slept. My cuz ( who now lives in Arkansas where it is hard to find albums like this) told me get this. I have been so pissed with hip hop as of late so I did not bother checking. THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM! The beats, rhymes, concept, skits ,etc all balance out. I will now make sure I stay in touch with the underground to get those joints. Amazon heads seem to know them joints as well!

5 out of 5 stars The Hardest Rocking Car Songs, The Most Romantic Ballads .......2007-03-20

This double album combines LITTLE DEUCE COUPE with ALL SUMMER LONG. As a result, you get the most propulsive, driving rock and roll sound of the early Beach Boys, ("Little Deuce Coupe" "409" "Shut Down") combined with ballads like "Girls On the Beach" and "Hushabye." It's impossible to exaggerate the clean, lush, precision of the Beach Boys' harmonies on "Hushabye," which was originally a primitive Fifties song by a forgotten group called the Mystics. Then there are the driving fast songs on SUMMER which have a sweeter, sleigh bell sound, like "Drive In" and "Do You Remember."

On top of all that this CD package provides great bonus rarities like "Be True To Your School" (the rare hit single version, with twanging guitars and sound effects) and "Carl's Big Chance" the instrumental featuring guitarist Carl Wilson, which shuffles along nicely and even sounds a bit bluesy at times.

This is a spectacular combination of two great albums, just as powerful as the big anthologies which they did in the Seventies, SPIRIT OF AMERICA and ENDLESS SUMMER.

All Summer Long was the Beach Boys' sixth album.

2 out of 5 stars back to the drawboard fellas........2000-09-27

i thought i'd be delighted by this cd , boy what a disappointment i found in the mixing, who ever did the job on this disc was sleeping while mixing this thing some tracks are good but most of them horrifingly mixed in mono the wrong ones. all have to say is the U.S issue of all summer long was great, but they pull it in the usa , so now you don't have a wonderful stereo version , but a sloppy mono copy that is'nt worthy of the beach boys tag. guys stereo works i just dig surfer girl/ shut down vol 2 that rocked i wish i could say the same for this disc.

i mean the ones like shut down & 409 sounds like i'm not hearing like i'm missing a speaker on my radio or something, there's no excitement . i have endless summer & made in the usa those mixes of those tracks jive & roll with energy that sounds like the the boys i've loved all these years. but do love the track car crazy cutie. better luck next time guys. thank goodness i bought a copy of all summer long before those guys at capitol pull it from the U.S .

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2000-06-03

Thiws is yet again another great cd. both of the albums on here are great. and there are still no bad songs on here, but still the only bad part about here was the fact that Al Jardine is a part of the band.

5 out of 5 stars What a fond trip down memory lane!.......1999-11-21

I'll admit up front that two of the stars I gave this 2-on-1 CD was simply for all the wonderful memories this release from 1964 conjures up. All Summer Long was only my second LP purchase. [The first was Meet the Beatles earlier in the year when I was all of eleven!]

With more than 6,000 titles in my music collection now, I've enjoyed the opportunity to go back and revisit some of these old records on CD and it reminded me of what I loved about these records in the first place. Sure, you still hear the hits on the classic rock stations--and there's plenty of them here: "I Get Around," "Wendy" and "Little Honda" from All Summer Long, as well as "Little Deuce Coupe," "Shut Down," "409" and "Be True to Your School" from Little Deuce Coupe.

But there are other gems on this release to savor: the always tight harmony singing on "Hushabye," the goofiness of "Drive-In," the heartache of "We'll Run Away," the hard-driving "Don't Back Down." Okay, "Our Favorite Recording Sessions" is tough to listen to more than once or twice, especially since it sounds a little too scripted.

The bottom line is this: This disc finds its way into my CD player more often than any of the five discs from the Beach Boys box set. Okay, let's set the way-back machine to 1964. Ready? "Round, round, get around, I get around, yeah, get around, oo-ooh, I get around..." (Enjoy!)

The Beach Boys' second album of 1964 (they released four that year!) was released at the height of rampant Beatlemania. But that stiff competition only served to push Wilson and his band to new creative heights. The budding transatlantic rivalry also effectively made this the final album of Brian Wilson's early sun-'n'-fun period--his personal introspection and insecurities would increasingly inform his work hereafter. That either dates All Summer Long or marks it as a time-capsule classic (more likely the latter). Wilson's Phil Spector-inspired production blossoms in service of such pressing concerns as the fun of motorcycling ("Little Honda"), seasonal fun ("All Summer Long") and the joys of dining out ("Drive In"). But the Hawthorne Hedonists also convey Wilson's romantic brooding on "Hushabye" and "Girls on the Beach," bittersweet reminders of how fragile their leader was at heart. All Summer Long now seems an ironic tribute to a simpler, long-vanished American ethos. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars America's #1 group responds to Beatlemania with a #1album.......2000-04-20

In the 1960s, albums released in America usually timed out at appx. 1/2 hour, with about 12 songs. Sadly, Capitol Records deleted the catalogue of Beach Boys two-fers, in favour of the original packaging seen here. As it is, All Summer Long is a first -- first response to the Beatles, first of the magnificent Brian Wilson-produced albums featuring all of Phil Spector's musicians, the Wrecking Crew, and first to really break the mould of only surf and car songs. Brian would

completely realise this non-fad album cycle with Today and Pet Sounds in the following two years. This album stands at the beginning of BB Phase II: Phase I was the surf/car records, Phase II inclu- ding All Summer Long/Summer Days/Today/Pet Sounds, and Phase III was the post-Pet Sounds, non-Brian-produced, collaborative period for the Beach Boys. Stellar production and vocal arrange- ments, catchy timeless tunes...what more is there?

5 out of 5 stars Solid, splendid--one of the best from the Boys.......2000-04-13

A must-have, simply put. A friend once looked at the songs on "Revolver" and said "Is this a greatest hits CD?" The same can be said about this album. (Two-fer or not, buy it. It's only money.) Now check out "Shut Down, Vol. 2." Long live 1964.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool songs that even teenagers will definitely like........1999-10-13

Any Beach Boys fan will love it and even people who aren't Beach Boy fans will learn to love it and will love to listen to it. It's really cool and up to date. Buy it and listen to it! It's really great!

5 out of 5 stars Brain Wilson is a genius, what more do you need to know?.......1999-06-11

I'd hunt for a copy of the "Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long" two-fer before dropping change on this single album CD. It is still in print in Canada and you'd get more bang for your buck. Nuts to Capitol records for deleting the wonderful two-fer series. Despite what some folks might claim the song "Drive In" is not about "the joys of dining out" but actually about the joys of the drive in movie theatre!

3 out of 5 stars Another Truncated Beach Boys CD, But Great Music.......1999-05-24

Of all of the major music groups, the Beach Boys are probably one of the worst served by their record label. This album was originally packaged along with the "Little Deuce Coupe" album, bonus tracks, and song by song annotation. Mysteriously, all of that is gone and we are left with a short single album, no liner notes or packaging, and no bonus tracks. This is wonderful music but it is frustrating to know that the original CD package is out of print in the USA.
