5 out of 5 stars Brings me back to the old days of D.P.G........2005-11-30

Wow... just like the good old days, probably better actually. The beats are like the old G-Funk beats (when I say old, I'm using it as a compliment), except more modernized, and just as sick. Maybe people who never really liked the whole west-coast g-funk movement won't like this CD, but I would bet that pretty much anyone who likes hip hop will really enjoy this CD.

There's really nothing out like it today - definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2005-03-20

This is right behind Dogg Food in my opinion and one of the best West Coast albums ever. These beats are crazy and very distinct. They are some of the most gangster tracks and production by Daz and Mike Dean and some of the best instrumentals I've ever heard. If a D.P.G. fan, this CD is very good and a must have.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars from tha dogg pound.......2004-12-04

Daz & Kurupt (Dillinger & Young Gotti for legal purposes) bring their first new record together in almost 6 years, and it sounds like 6 years of practice. The wait is worth it. Only 1 weak "song" on here, a few alright ones, most are high quality and even has a classic on here. Guests are limited to 3 songs and each member has a solo. Production is handled by Daz on every song and he's assisted by rap-a-lot's musical genius, Mike Dean, on about 12 or 13 of the tracks. It has gangsta songs and dirty songs, what else do you expect from "the terrible 2 the unbearable crew, DPG I thought u knew". With little promotion or airplay this album is almost a classic and all rap fans need a copy of it.

#2 - 10 (classic - also put on their "2002" album - great beat)
#3 - 9 (f/ xzibit - also put on their "2002" album)
#4 - 7
#5 - 8 (about gettin f*c*ed up)
#6 - 8 (dirty song)
#7 - 1.5 (horrible song one of the worst ever -- good thing it's less then 2 minutes)
#8 - 9.5 (about partying)
#9 - 9.5 (great beat - about bitc*e$ - Kurupt is talkin' about foxy brown in his hilarious verse)
#10 - 8 (about treatin' girls like ladies to get the pus*y)
#11 - 8 slower gangsa beat)
#12 - 8 (f/ Beanie Sigel & Roscoe)
#13 - 7.5 (slower song)
#14 - 9 (great verse from Slip Capone)
#15 - 7 (positive song)
#16 - 8.5 (daz solo)
#17 - 8.5 (kurupt solo - daz does the hook though)
#18 - 8
#19 - 7
#20 - 9.5 (good beat)

5 out of 5 stars Daz & Kurupt's sophmore release!.......2003-07-11

Previously known as "Tha Dogg Pound" on Death Row Records, rappers Kurupt and Daz have gone independent and on their first group offering since 1995, the duo have a lot to say.

The album goes over twenty tracks deep as Daz & Kurupt speak on streets issues with a mixture of fast-paced flows, phenominal lyrics, and top-notch production (Daz produced along with Mike Dean).

Daz and Kurupt play very well off of each other and their training under hip-hop heavyweights Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg during their Death Row days is obvious. Guests on "Dillinger & Young Gotti" are few but appearances by Xzibit, Beanie Siegel, Roscoe, RBX, and Slip Capone are utilized to the fullest.

For any true fan of the Dogg Pound Gangstas, this is a must-have and if you are a fan of crew leader, Snoop Dogg, then you may want to check this LP out as well, for his family tree is full of talent.

Album Description

As one of the five epicenters of Southern hip hop, Memphis has long had a thriving artist community who have sold thousands of cds without major label support. In 2005-2006, America felt the heat from the Memphis streets more than ever with platinum hit makers like Eightball & MJG, recent Grammy Award winners Three 6 Mafia and others. Local legend Yo Gotti is the next to step up and rep his hometown with his TVT Records debut, Back 2 Da Basics. Gotti, along with Three 6 and Eightball & MJG, was recently featured on MTV's "My Block: The Hustle And Flow of Memphis" and in media ranging from Mass Appeal's 14 pg. spread on the Memphis scene to the New York Times review of one of his classic underground mix tapes.

Memphis is poised to become "the new Houston" as hip hop's next regional scene to bust into national prominence and Yo Gotti's new single, "Gangsta Party" featuring Bun B and Eightball is his ticket to big time blingdom. Back 2 Da Basics features more Gotti rhyme spitting with guest shots from Cash Money's All Star, Lil Wayne, Baby and Young Buck. One track on Back 2 Da Basics many may already be familiar with is "Full Time," a street's eye view real enough to be featured in the hit movie, "Hustle and Flow."

Yo Gotti in the past can spit some raw ish but on this one, I dunno what happpened.....The production seemed too generic, the rapping was pretty average and generic and not that impressive at all, and doesnt carry much replay value....To be honest, id pop in a Three 6 Mafia cd rather than this one....Album was slacking on so many levels, now theres some tracks that listenable, but the rest make it hard to enjoy this album, nothin special bout it at all...This album waz overhyped I believe and flopped horribly.......Gotti can do much better than this.....Wouldnt recommend anyone to chek it out.....

Straight product but doesn't bring any new elements out of Memphis. Sounds similar to Three 6 and everyone else out the Tenn. At least Young Buck sounded a LITTLE different when he dropped... none the less o boy has potential. Holla when it's gangsta. Peace

The growing legions of thug lovers and 'hood mistress devotees who drove Ja Rule and Ashanti's solo offerings to the top of the Billboard charts may enjoy this album. Mr. Rule himself lends some much needed legitimacy to the project, warbling his way through standout cuts "Down 4 U," featuring Murder Inc. ladies Charlie Baltimore, Vita, and Ashanti, and "Ain't It Funny," with R&B hottie du jour J-Lo. Most of the tracks feature anything from two to seven mediocre rhyme talents (e.g., Black Child, Chink Santana, and Caddillac Tah) spitting game, making tracks like "Ride wit' Us" or "Tha Nexx Nigguz" sound crowded and muddled. Hearing the rest of the cast of virtually unknown emcee's holler "murder" ad nauseam is not overly enticing either. Thankfully, the slow, lean, radio-friendly production on "The Rain" and "No One Does It Better" makes this one bearable. This project needs at least one more credible emcee and/or vocalist to make it work, but with Nas allegedly looking to pull out a membership in Gotti's rhyme familia, the Inc.'s future looks bright. --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars Gangstafied.......2006-02-25

This album is worth the money just for the song "Gangstafied". That song is amazing and is probably my favorite Ja Rule song. Thats the reason why I bought the album but I was surprised to find that it is actually a damn good cd. It is cool because it introduces you to lesser known Murder INC rappers that are really good like my favorites: Black Child, Ronnie Bumps, Chink Santana & Jody Mack. The best songs are Gangstafied, the hit Down 4 U, It's Murda, Ride Wit Us, The Rain, We Still Don't Give A F*ck & Hold On which is a really unique rap/R&B song by my new favorite Chink Santana. If you like Murder INC and/or Ja Rule then this is a good buy and highly reccommended.

3 out of 5 stars I'd say it's okay (3.5 stars).......2006-01-24

When I got this CD back in '02, I thought it was going to at least a decent CD. I was somewhat impressed about this album. I'd say the first 8 tracks are good, then it goes downhill after that after that Black Child song "O.G." The CD tries to appeal to commercial rap fans like "Down 4 U" (which orginally was titled "Down Ass B**** (remix)." But hey I've seen Ja Rule cross over to that many times. Vita left the group. Chari Baltimore isn't all that good. I won't get into the way Ashanti sounds. Black Child is decent. Cadallac Tah Murdah isn't that good either. The rest of them shine on various tracks on this CD. There are some good tracks on here, like "Gangstafied" and "Ride Wit Us" where many of the lesser name Murda Inc members shine on (not to mention a video was shot also). Something pointless was the J-Lo song "Ain't That Funny (Remix)" with Ja and Cadallac Tah. I guess when I was 16, songs like that rocked my head, but now I'm like "Why is this on here?" This isn't a bad album, it's just commercial stuff and bs rapping by the known Inc. members just happen weigh it down, below it's expectations.

3 out of 5 stars This Album is ok but not a classic.......2005-11-28

Product Description

When long-time West Coast gang bang lyricist Kurupt Young Gotti declares "WAR" on the industry, the man ain't playin'. With all the drama in the rap game these days, Kurupt couldn't just sit back and listen while everybody was speakin' on him, waitin' for "Against The Grain" to drop, so he hooked up with Cali Untouchable DJ, DJ Strong, and dropped a full-length hardcore banger of a mixtape introducing his new group, The Riflemen (Kurupt, Mobb Deep, 40 Glocc, Jayo Felony) and the rest of his new partners in rhyme (Eastwood, Gail Gotti, Switch Bladez, Bigg Tri, and younger brother Roscoe). Loaded with nothin' but "Exclusives, Unreleased & New Jointz", "WAR" is appropriately titled, with Kurupt bustin' shotz at everyone, from those you know he's got beef with to people you never knew he had beef with. This mixtape clears up a lot of things that Kurupt hasn't had the musical outlet to say since everything that's gone down since his last new album dropped a while back. Of course, this isn't a documentary, so Kurupt still does his share of blunt smokin' and skeet skeet skeetin', but if you listen closely you while hear real meaning behind some of the things he says in these new songs. If anything, this album shows that Kurupt is a force to be reckoned with in the West Coast rap game, or just the rap game period, as he does his thing without the production, guest appearances or partnership of his old Dogg Pound set or Tha Row (Death Row). Whether you are a fan, or you just want to understand what happened to the West Coast rap game in the last few years, get your hands on this mixtape, because many of the tracks on here will not be featured on Kurupt's future album when it drops. -26 TRACKS- - LIMITED EDITION-

5 out of 5 stars This is Fire better than any other independent Kurupt projec.......2005-06-17

Listen around and you will see that this release is fire compare it to the originals or all that bootleg against the gran stuff and this is where its at. Classic material before Kurupt the kingpin went back to DPG....I doubt you will ever hear this diss material again from the man!!!

3 out of 5 stars OK, kinda good.......2005-03-21

This is a good CD to just have. There isn't exactly anything special about it because all it does is diss the whole D.P.G. camp. Former member Kurupt and just about all of his new homies takes shots at Daz, Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, and others. In one flow, Kurupt raps "Before I say another word - motherf**k Snoop, DoggHouse eat a big Dogg Pound d!ck, this Gotti you ain't gon' pimp slap sh*t" Also it appears that they diss Lloyd Banks/G-Unit on the "West Coast Fire" track in which Kurupt, Eastwood, and Stacey Adams rap over the "Lloyd Banks - On Fire" instrumental while they almost duplicate Banks' flow on the original track. All the other tracks just pretty much take shots at D.P.G. The flaw of the CD is that out of 26 tracks, maybe 14 are good or okay. All the others are absolute garbage from Switch Bladez and Ebony without Kurupt in any of it, or short little interludes that don't really count as tracks. I purchased it because I am a Dogg Pound/West Coast fan and wanted to hear the old member Kurupt and see if there were some good tracks. Kurupt's lyrics are almost all disses and aren't too bad, pretty good, but not the best in terms of well thought-out verses. But, in mixtape terms, it is good and if you're a fan of Kurupt and L.A. gangsta rap, then it is a good CD to add to your collection.

Ima huge DPG fan and I can honestly say that this album is str8 garbage. No disrepsect to Daz but he really slipped up on this album with his flow and lyrics. Kurupt was average. Beats on here were terrible with exception of a few tracks. only good tracks are DPGC Music, Push Bacc. Rest are average or just suck. Wait 4 Cali Iz Active or just listen 2 Dogg Food 4 now. Dont get this album

3 out of 5 stars Daz & Kurupt, Back together and getting back to form.......2006-06-21

It's easy to say that Daz & Kurupt are better served as a duo rather than individual solo artists although both have reaped success as solo artists. Daz has had success as an underground king releasing so many albums it's hard for anyone to keep track while Kurupt had more success in the mainstream world. While both of them have released good to great albums since their split it is undeniable that they work magic while together.

Dillinger & Young Gotti II: The Saga Continues follows their underground classic released in 2001 and follows suit very nicely. Daz & Kurupt each seem like they are trying to feel each other out again on these tracks as they've been away for a while and since their breakup a lot has changed. They both drop great lyrical performances but the chemistry is sorta lacking (I'm sure Cali is Active will recapture the chemistry). The production, mostly handled by Daz Dillinger & Ivan Johnson, is hit & miss but the hits really recapture the Dogg Pound feel. Songs such as U Remind Me, Hittin Donuts In The Street, Say It, I Luv When U, and Ride & Creep are all great vintage DPG tracks worthy of praise. However, the miss tracks really don't cut it. Songs such as DPGC Muzic, We Gitt, Make Me A Believer, and Say It just aren't very good.

Undoubtedly the best song on this album is HITTIN DONUTS IN THE STREET as it takes you back to when Dogg Pound and the west coast were on top of the world. This album is decent and should be picked up if you are a fan of the duo. Others may want to wait till the major release of Cali Iz Active on June 27, 2006. 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Daz Kurupt .......2006-04-05

It is great to hear from these two artists again. They had their problems but not that is over with and they are back to making albums again. They have been in the game for a long time and know how to please westcoast fans like myself and I am happy with this release but I see somebody giving this album 2 stars which is rediculous cause every album they put out was banging so to that guy go listen to 5-0 cent stop hating on the real gangstas. Recommend real rap fans buy this album.

2 out of 5 stars ~A STEP BACK~.......2006-03-31

Daz Nigga Daz & Kurupt the Kingpin are clearly gone. When you hear quality material like "Dogg Food" and then switch to this "Saga" CD... One has to wonder where the effort went?

It's always a treat to see Daz and Kurupt together doing stuff. They've accomplished a bit on solo projects and dualing on other albums. But this one was a rush-to-the-studio. Daz- has he changed this much? His talent levels have kept him bringing stylish beats in the past- very jazzy, funky with many instruments felt. That's all gone now..... Now it's bass, bass, bass with lost chorus direction and no style.

Daz's delivery isn't even what it use to be. The pitch is very high all the time, even if the production doesn't call for it. Kurupt back in the studio on this one is nice. But we get a lost focus with so many destractions. And what's clearly missing is the other lineups- no Soopafly, Snoop, Nate, Mr. Malik, Bad Azz... so forth. I know, I know that DPGC album is coming out to reveal that all. Well Daz & Kurupt should've waited instead of damaging their album archive.

Album had a couple of nice ones. Overall, not at the level of their capability...

5 out of 5 stars DPGC BACK ON THE MAP.......2006-03-26

Kurupt and Daz back together is one of the best thing to happen this year and this album they put out is a banger and I still have it in my car banging. My favorites are DPGC Muzic,Hit Donutz N The Street,Imma Gangsta,This Is How We Live and Ride & Creep. Bottom line is buy this album it is a banger and worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars Different.......2007-05-14

I'd been hearing great things outta Memphis 'bout dis dude 4 a minute and finally got around 2 coppin' one of his albums.

I'm glad I did!!!! "Life" caught me completely off guard.

I was half-expectin' just another raw dirty south cat who'd spend 16 tracks try'na put me up on his 'hood. Instead, Yo Gotti does all this while proving himself as a student of the game and separating himself from Nu Skul sound-a-likes who lack his style, versatility and old school hip hop IQ.

I can't say his content/subject matter are all that new but Gotti's honest effort 2 make this album sound different is what gets me hype about "Life."

In short, Yo Gotti is mos def a nu skul mc kickin' old school flava which I find quite refreshing!

Some of the beats on this album sound str8 up like hip hop jams from 1985, '86 and '87. The DJ's actually scratchin' on the intro (I can't remember the last time I heard that on an album that wasn't made back then)!!!!! At least five other tracks blend that trademark Memphis sound -- a high energy, somewhat jazzy/New Orleans bounce concoction -- with elements of Teddy Riley's pulsating New Jack Swing (see "9-to-5" and "U Understand" as prime examples). Production-wise, "Life" does NOT get locked into one sound and yet doesn't come across like one of those albums you can tell was put together by 16 different producers.

Perhaps best of all, Gotti's got a flow to match each track. I really like his ability to switch up styles.

He sounds kind've like a less animated Ludacris on "All I Ever Wanted." He borrows Nelly's more melodic flow on "Str8 From Da North" and "Get Down." And he even sounds like a hungrier, more respectable version of Chingy on "On Da Grind."

E'erybody may not be ready 4 Gotti's flava. This is NOT what I was expectin' at all so I might have 2 cop "Self Explanatory" 4 real!

Oh, and don't sleep on Gotti's homage 2 Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1987 "My Posse's On Broadway" ("Reppin' North Memphis"). I also like the way the song "Life" borrows from Mary J. Blige's 1994 cult-classic "My Life" on the hook.

My personal favorite cut on this album is "Breakaman" which tells the story of a man who finds da one he thinks is his ride-or-die chick and later finds out she ain't that real.

Four star album b/c of its creative approach. Gotti definitely made sure his album was well put together.

5 out of 5 stars Off the Hook.......2005-01-22

My favorite group is 3-6 mafia from the memphis ten. On a 3-6 cd they had sample songs and yo gottis "reppin north memphis" was on it for like 30 seconds. I ordered the cd online cause they didnt have that in sacramento at the time. It was worth the $17 to me just to hear the rest of that song. You couldnt belive my happiness when I listened to the whole thing. This is just an incredible cd. The beats are Great and go great with the lyrics. I havent even listened to the cd for over a year just cause I dont think my stereo is good enough to play it. Thats not a joke either. Once my car stereo is On the same level as this cd then everyone is sacramento will know who YO GOTTI is weather they want to or not.

5 out of 5 stars Tuff!.......2005-01-08

I own over a thousand CDs and this is one of my favorite. I would even go as far as putting this on underground classic status. Ol' boy is on a serious come up and I hope he blows up like some of these non-deserving stars out here today. Them Rap Hustlaz got some serious heat wit em. Get that Kingpin Skinny Pimp joint too if you liked this one. I've been waiting for them Kinfolks too from this camp. I think they picked up La Chat too. gotta get my hands on that asap. Let that Yo Gotti do what it do. Turn your system up in your joint and let it wang!

4 out of 5 stars REAL SOUTHERN RAP.......2004-04-14

Rap is going pop. That's why it's great to hear an album like this which is real hip-hop. You may recognize some of the beats on here, he samples everything from the Beastie Boys to Sir Mix-A-Lot's Posse On Broadway which he turns into Reppin' North Memphis. If you are real rap fan and are tired of all of this Chingy & Nelly garbage, pick up some real Dirty South rap from Yo Gotti!
