With their feel-good humanism, uniquely rural perspective, and melodic blend of funk and rap, Arrested Development seemed like the next big thing in 1992. The group hailed from Atlanta, which was not then a capital of hip-hop and R&B, and this, their debut recording, won the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll. Speech, the primary lyricist, wrote and delivered eloquent attacks on gangsta rap's mindless nihilism: the band's first hit, "Tennessee," spoke of reclaiming Southern black traditions from the racism that sullied their memory, while their second, "People Everyday," deftly updated the Sly Stone classic. Although Speech's rapping style was not distinctive, Dionne Farris's keening vocals highlighted the band's front line. Unfortunately, Speech began to run short of ideas and the band failed to maintain the high standards that this debut set. They disbanded a few years later. --Martin Johnson

4 out of 5 stars Bring this stuff back...........2006-11-28

How refreshing to hear this kind of positive hip-hop, when the most of the world is drunk on the toxic garbage of 50-cent, P-Diddy, Ludacris, and Jay-Z.

There was a time when hip-hop showed promise by having intelligent lyrical content and thought-provoking introspection set to creative and original music from groups like Arrested Development.

When Ice-T was doing his morally-bankrupt "Cop-Killa" vomit, and Bone-Thugz-n-Harmony were glorifying the "gangsta" mentality that by now has been adopted into much of the hip-hop genre, A.D. was trying to send a different message. That women are NOT objects of marital infidelity and are not sex toys that you "hook up" with at the local clubs. And that Black culture is not about bling, blunts and "bitches". There are more beautiful, traditional and wholesome things to be proud of that sadly get thrown to the side for the more provocative and fleeting racy tripe that fills the screens of BET and MTV.

Standout tracks are Tennesee, Give a Man a Fish, People Everyday and Mr. Wendall.

If you're tired of the "Yo Dawg...spark up dat splif, grab my gat, and get-cho-freak-on" trash of today's rap/hip-hop scene, I recommend you check these guys out. It's much more satisfying (and edifying).

5 out of 5 stars The Most Innovative Group From Atlanta (5 stars).......2006-06-26

Before Outkast, Goodie Mob, and many other voices, there was a group named Arrested Development (Speech, Headliner, Baba Oje, Rasa Don, Aerle Taree, & Motosho Eshe) well known for spreading their African culture and vibes, along with positive messages comming from Atlanta.

One thing I like about this group is their style was mostly laid back and enjoyable. Most of the contributions of this album were the instruments that were used throughout this album. Speech, who does most of the vocals, makes lyrics that were made to create a positive environment like marrage on the song as "U" and getting a better outlook on religion on "Fishin' 4 Religion". At the same time, they were more for giving back knowledge to others in songs "Give A Man A Fish" & "Mr. Wendal". Other tracks that have a strong positive vibe are "People Everyday", "Tennessee" and "Washed Away". They sample a lot of old artist's songs on this album (a good one would be Sylvester Stewart's "Everyday People" on the song "People Everyday"), I like it though.

Overall, this was a very innovative album that came out in 1992. Unfortnately this album got over played, that people got tired of this group (I was about 7 when this came out, and I still remember the "Mr. Wendal" song), so when their 1994 album Zinga...(I dear not try to spell that name) came out, people turned the other way. I believe both of their albums should be heard. Also they would appear on MTV's Unplugged in 1993. If you can, try to hear one of the albums by this group, even it's a greatest hits album (they're tons of them floating around), because I pretty sure you'll love it. I recommend this to people who want to hear some African cultural vibes and music.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Baba Oje!.......2005-08-19

It is a true pity that our people are so eager to line the pockets of filthmongering materialistic hip-crap, and leaving eloquent and sincere artists like A.D. out to dry.

This album was positivity pure and simple. The message was strength but also intelligence. We can be poets too. The pen is mightier than the sword.

How many other groups out there subscribe to the African concept of respecting the elders? But Speech and Co. brought Baba Oje with them for spiritual guidance, and he gave them plenty!

The music is soft and deep and beautiful. An anthem for our people, and a prayer of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Who says rap has to be violent and vulgar?.......2005-08-10

I respect AD for having the courage of their convictions and being unafraid to state their beliefs unequivocally in their music. It's obvious that they have great respect for humanity and for their fellow man (all mankind).

"Mr. Wendal" is a very touching commentary on homelessness, "Tennessee" talks about recapturing a more peaceful time and lifestyle and my favourite track "Washed Away" talks about the gradual and slow moral degradation that takes place almost imperceptably.

This album is a classic because the lyrics are great and would still be great if this were a country & western album. My point is that the intelligent and heartfelt lyrics here would be at home in any genre and what is surprising is that it falls under the rap genre which is probably the one you'd least associate these days with intelligence, sympathy and concern for humanity.

AD may not have lived very long as a group but this album sure will and is destined to remain a classic for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Widespread Rules!!.......2007-06-27

I recently crushed my foot(broken in several places) and have been recooperating with the help of W.P. Although I have been heavily medicated most of the time this is still some of the greatest music I have ever heard. I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!

4 out of 5 stars Nice rebound........2006-09-29

Released in 1994, this is Widespread Panic's fourth CD. It is 56 minutes long, but there is about 3 minutes of silence in the middle of the last track. The sound quality is very good. The album sounds much better than the previous album. Credit should go to John Keane who produced the album and plays on some of the tracks.

Widespread Panic put two excellent albums, where they were mostly a quartet. These albums had excellent, hard driving southern rock type songs. They were distinctive and the interesting.

On the third album, Everyday, the group expanded to a sextet. There sound became muddled and muted. It was more like their live act, where everyone is playing at once, whether or not they should be. Many on the songs sounded indistinquishable. And then there was the addition of John Herrman's piano playing that consisted of pounding the keys and sounded out of place in many parts.

On this fourth album, Ain't Life Grand, the group reverts back to the sound on the first 2 albums. The production and mix are brought under control. It all sounds great and you can really enjoy the band.

There is quite a bit more variety and experimentation on this CD. There are some accoustic tracks. Jack sounds similar to Marshall Tucker.

Almost all of the songs on this CD are very good. And there is some excellent music to accompany them. And, you can really hear the playing.

The last song, Fishwater, is really only about 4 minutes long. It is followed by 2 minutes of silence and then a really nice acoustic guitar piece. It is excellent and I don't know why it was hidden at the end of the CD.

The only downside is the cover of Can't Get High. It has got to be about the worst song Widespread Panic has ever done. It is just a bad song from all angles. It is poorly written and poorly performed. For some reason, it is one of the songs that got the most airplay.

I think this is the last really good studio album from Widespread Panic. Future albums would revert back to that muddled sound. All of the albums do have some great songs, and some great playing. It is just none of them are good from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome original Panic album.......2006-07-17

This was probably the second album I'd ever listened to from Panic but as with the first album ('Till the medicine takes) I was blown away by how awesome their music is...which has prompted me to go to as many shows as I can get to. I would highly recommend this cd toany panic fan and even those who have never heard their music.

5 out of 5 stars PANIC stricken from that moment on...!.......2006-04-28

This was my first WSP purchase. When it was first released back in '94 I bought it even though I hadn't heard any of their music yet. But I remember hearing "Little Kin" for the first time while reading Col. Bruce's whacked liner notes (my first introduction to him, too) and knowing right then and there that I was hooked!

Twelve years and numerous shows later, plus having since bought everything else they've put out, this one is still my favorite. "Jack", "Blackout Blues" (especially great for listening to while skiing!), and the title track are standouts that rank at the top of my list.

There's not a dud track here. If you don't have it, get it! While you're at it, check out some Col. Bruce and/or the ARU, too!

5 out of 5 stars ain't life grand- widespread panic.......2004-09-23

With their fourth album, Widespread Panic shows the world how music is really made. The album "Ain't Life Grand" takes music to a new level. Guests like John Keane (who recently composed the music for the tv show CSI), David Blackmon(who has also worked with Jerry Reed), Adrienne Fishe and Ronnie Gizmo (who play with Cool Joe Funky Soul Symbols) also had a part in the making of this album. With hits like "Ain't Life Grand", "Heroes", "Can't Get High", "Fishwater", and "Airplane", this album is already promising of a good time. John Bell belts out amazing lyrics that anyone can relate to and Dave Schools rips it up on the bass. Everyone should just do themselves a favor and buy this album today.

Album Description

The Marshall Tucker Band, acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of the Southern rock movement, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with an ongoing catalog restoration and release program. One of the first releases is their 1974 sophomore release, A New Life. It comes augmented with a live bonus track from the band's early days on the road and has been remastered from the original analog tapes produced by Paul Hornsby.

Eight months later their debut, after extensive touring with the Allman Brothers Band, MTB released their follow up A New Life (Billboard #37). The gold album included "24 Hours At A Time" and "Blue Ridge Mountain Sky" and firmly established the band as one of the leading lights in the field of Southern Rock. "The buying public never really cared whether we were country or rock and roll" says founding member Doug Gray. "They called us a Southern rock band, but we have always played everything from country to blues and all things in-between."

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01

All the finest ingredients of rock, country, blues, and jazz blended into a down-home gumbo as only The (original) Marshall Tucker Band could do it! The remastered series sounds superb audibly, and the packaging is beautifully restored- complete with historic photos and interesting liner notes. The Marshall Tucker Band remastered recordings of the original band- "Self Titled" through "Tenth"- are well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars MTB A New Life.......2006-07-20

With a blend of southern blues and country music, The Marshall Tucker Band releases a second great album that doesn't seem to fair as well as their first album. This may be to the lack of more well known hits (except for 24 Hours at a Time). But for a true Marshall Tucker Band fan, this is an album that must be added to your collection. With Toy Caldwell's Blue Ridge Mountain Sky and the jam song 24 Hours at a Time, this album reigns in the sound that MTB plays so well. It's a perfect blend of blues and country to bring out the southern in any of us. From beginning to end (with the possible exception of Another Cruel Love which is not a high quality live recording) this album is great to listen to. I don't recommend it for anyone just getting into MTB, but for those who love the sound, it's a definite must have!

5 out of 5 stars A New Life.......2006-05-28

I believe that this album, along with "Eat A Peach" by the Allman Brother Band, is the essential "Southern Rock Album". Tuckers sophomore album captures the spirit of the early 70s southern rock movement better than any other album. From the jazzy Southern Woman to the incredible Another Cruel Love, Toy Caldwell's songwriting was never better. You Ain't Foolin' Me might be the purest "anthem" song that Marshall Tucker was so famous for in concert. The best album by maybe the most underrated live band ever.

5 out of 5 stars MTB Does It Again!!!.......2006-02-14

MTB is one of those country jazz influenced bands of the seventies. I had forgotten all about them for years and happen to hear one of their newer songs,(Although Doug Grey is the only original member.) titled the "Ride Of Your Life" from Beyond The Horizon CD. I went out and bought all of the older stuff right up to the 30 yr Anthology. Still good stuff. Takes me back to another time and place.

5 out of 5 stars Marshall Tucker Tops Its Debut The Second Time Out.......2005-04-19

With A NEW LIFE, the Marshall Tucker Band outdoes its exceptional debut by a country mile. This album opens with a title track about a man who's just been released from prison, but it could be applied to anyone leaving a bad situation for something better. There are numerous other great songs here, but the best one is "24 Hours At A Time", which became Marshall Tucker's answer to "Free Bird" or "Green Grass And High Tides" when it was performed live. If you love the Allman Brothers Band, the Outlaws, or Lynyrd Skynyrd, you'll love this album.

Remember hard rock? No, not alternative, not metal, not punk, not acid rock. Just good, old-fashioned, beefy, brawny, bluesy, hard rock. This power trio keeps a dying form alive, but not in a revivalist sort of way. Their ferocious but very soulful blend of blues rock and Southern boogie is a natural outgrowth of their musical influences, and with a tour docket that includes more than 200 shows a year, they've honed their sound to a fine edge. Life Before Insanity is their fifth record, but only their third studio effort, and it's their sharpest work--even though they've always been the most focused of all the jam-oriented ensembles. They've managed to craft a diverse and hardy 74-minute album, using a variety of moods, structures, textures, and time signatures, without ever really straying from their robust core sound. One minute Warren Haynes is trading searing licks with Ben Harper, the next he's deep inside a beautiful acoustic ballad, then he's blistering through a Robert Johnson cover with steely slide guitar. As with any hard-rock band worth their weight, there's a bit of arena-rock drama, but it's inevitable when you match brains and muscle. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Righteous Blues-Rockers Tear It Up Here.......2003-11-12

LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, Government Mule's last album with the late, great Allen Woody on bass, is a great slab of ZZ Top/Montrose-style hard blues-rock. All of the songs are great, especially "Bad Little Doggie." Leader Warren Haynes is a blistering guitarist and singer, and his belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The Deeper You Go Let That Hard Ass Mule Carry On.......2003-03-24

This disc is part of the reason why I don't burn or share studio discs. This is an inspired work of art. It is the last Govt Mule studio work that includes founding bassist, Allan Woody. The song writing is inspired, the lyrics are pure poetry, often dark and brooding explorations of ego. and examinations of the self society. Warren Haynes' voice is powerful easily interpreting his private examinations of self and society. His tales often betray his emotions and feelings laying bare places most of us keep hidden. He is a modern slide, blues, rock guitar virtuoso. This is a studio work but you still hear great demonstrations of his improvisational skills. Skills currently being used by the Allman Brothers Band as well as Phil and Friends, two of the top improvisational bands of this and the last century. Matt Abts is a frenetic, embattled engine producing much of Govt Mule's horsepower. He hammers away on the drums, relentlessly battering the skins creating a consistent Thunder Thor would be proud of. Allan Woody powers the team shouldering the Mule's yoke. His contribution to the band is difficult to convey. A founding member and friend who's loss triggered a Govt Mule Odyssey that ultimately brought the fan the "Deepest End" series that culminates in a DVD/film that chronicles Rocks most unique and creative "Power Trio".

"Life Before Insanity" is ABTS-SO-MULE-LY FAB-MULE-OUS! A disc that makes me listen. It gets better with every spin!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-10-04

Why in the world do these record people keep taking this CD off the market. This is a solid jam CD that has some great gutiar work from Warren Haynes. He was in the Allman Brother for awhile and he can flat out play the slide guitar. Great song, Life Before Insanity. Buy this CD if you can find it. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Mule Power!.......2002-04-10

After the over-heavy, muddy Dose, I was pleased to find this effort more melodic and more musically leaning toward the adventurous first Mule album (one that knocked my socks off with the first play). There's more of the off the wall sounds, reverbs and tremloes and tones that made the first Mule so different from everything else. One listen to "Life Before Insanity" tells you everything you need to know about this album. If you don't like that track, you don't need this album.

From the simple riff that opens "Wandering Child" to the end of "It's My Life" (NOT the uncredited add on "If I Had Possesion Over Judgement Day," the old Rev Gary Davis track, if I am not mistaken... that is an unnecessarly and mediocre track) I can constantly roll this album and not get bored with it. There's always a new turn to be found in repeated listenings. The only other track I might program off is "Fallen Down", but it's not worth the time to even do that. Overall a very solid effort.

1 out of 5 stars P.U.!.......2002-03-17

This is one malodorous effort which I would advise serious music lovers to avoid like the Dengue fever. After all the good things I heard about this band I finally decided to buy this CD based on the reviews here at Amazon. Good Lord was I dismayed and disgusted when this abomination made it's debut on my CD player. I know these guys have a great pedigree, but what in the name of all things decent were they thinking when they unleashed this stench on an unsuspecting public? There is not a single tune on this CD worth playing a second time. I have probably listened to this CD from start to finish about 10-12 times, and it completely eludes me as to what people see in it. The lyrics are pathetic and the playing is unimaginative to the point of being embarrassing. I have played this disc in the morning and in the evening. I have played it cruising down the freeway and lounging on my deck. I have played it in every imaginable spiritual, psychological, and mental state. And it continues to disappoint! Well done, lads. Hope my [number] bucks makes it all worthwhile. For my money, I'll stick with The Mississippi Allstars.

If you not from the south then you don't know the impact this album had on rap itself. When P started opening doors for us to get any credit this was the album that said the south had more than west coast clones and booty shaking music. Before this album you had the Biggies, the Tupacs, and all that but you didnt have too many people HONESTLY living day to day that life and rapping about it. They might have experienced it but no one was rapping live and direct from the lions den like Master P and all of the No Limit Soldiers.

    5 out of 5 stars A disappointment?.......2007-02-10

I used to love No Limit. I bought every single CD they released, wack or not. This CD and WWIII were two of the top five No Limit CD's easily, because they were about Fiend and Mac and not No Limit and Beats By The Pound ( which made No Limit what it was, the beats first and the rappers second, until the two previously mentioned CD's.) In truth, the majority of the CD's they released are all worthy of buying again. I just spent about $250.00 buying a bunch of their old CD's that I used to have back in the day and can't find anymore, NO MASTER P CD's! His CD's were disappointments except Last Don and Ghetto Dope. And where can I find TRU with Smokin Green on it instead of the bonus songs??????

5 out of 5 stars This album is still hot.......2006-01-13

Even though it has been seven years since it dropped i still rock this album truly especially my songs Talk It How I Bring It and Mr.Whomp Whomp. What I find interesting and very unique is how he focused solely on it being about him and his project alone and eliminating all those annoying as collaborations that rappers usually have on albums. Fiend really comes with it and represents who he is and where he's from on this album. I totally and completely disagree with those pitiful folks who try to say the album was disappointing because it didnt feature more collaborations. Hello when are they going to wake up and realize whose name is on the album and whose music is it. This album definitely wasnt a typical NL album(thankfully). By the way i am glad fiend left that sorry label

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as his first one.......2003-03-27

I did not really like this album that much. It didn't feature most of the No Limit rappers on it. That was a dissapointment. Yet Fiend still brought it, #5, #2, and #13 were the best I thought. So he deserves a 3.

3 out of 5 stars Average NL CD.......2000-05-07

Since most of No Limit's albums are slammin, this album was quite a disappointment. Don't get me wrong now, Fiend's hella tight. But I think this album could have been better and had more people on it. The best songs on here are The Rock Show, Ak'n Bad, and Mr. Whomp Whomp. Buy it. It's worth checking out

4 out of 5 stars Fiend shows why he's one of the more talented soldiers.......2000-05-02

On his sophomore album, Fiend mixes things up a little, most notably including only four guest appearances, as opposed to the fifty or so on his last album. On "Ak'n Bad," over a grimy beat, Mystikal steals the show with the fast paced stutter-stop flow he's mastered. "Heart Of A Ghetto Boy" is a subdued track on which Fiend slows his flow to match the sax in the background. The track is a welcome break from the rowdiness of the first six tracks. On "Walk That Line," he totally flips his flow. You gotta listen to it more than once to fully appreciate it. Other standout tracks include "The Rock Show," "Trip To London," and "Waiting On God."
The album could've done without songs like "The Truth Is" and "They Don't Hear Me," as they don't bring anything new to the table. But overall, "Street Life" is one of the better No Limit releases of recent memory.

Ill tell you this right now I will never be down with calling women Bi*ch or hoe. But The beats are just plain raw. If u have a special sound system in your car I would certainly consider the amended version. Word of advice for Webstar(webbie), have more respect for women and keep up the good beats.

1 out of 5 stars You'd think somebody whose real name is Webster would have opened a dictionary at least once........2006-06-06

This is absolute [...]. It's so bad its funny. In the big picture it's very sad that the great music of hip hop has sunk this low. He has no talent whatsoever. All he does is rhyme swears with the same swear, and when the words rhyme it's so basic. All of this is with a horrible flow and a [...]voice. Not that it matters but its worth mentioning hes ugly as hell. His lyrics are of a 3rd grader who learned a ton of profanities early on. All he says every song is the same damn thing. He has absolutely nothing to say except bling hoes and how savage his life is (sarcasm). What ever happened to the days of Ready To Die, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, and The Don Killuminati The 7 day theory just to name a few. If you are a true rap fan you will not buy this crap because you actually can figure out that it sucks. Meaning you're not an idiotic teenager who thinks theyre [...]by blasting this in their car who cant see the absolute lack of talent. A person who doesnt rap could easily outdo this album that's how bad it is. This is the opposite of what rap was supposed to be. I hate the rappers that just sell out and pump out horrible tracks really fast to get rich and don't care about the music. I really hope somebody can save the desolated wasteland of the hip hop industry. I'm a local rapper so I will end this review with my own rap which annihilates anything Webbie has or ever will make.

Fake mcs must pick up a dictionary your lack of vocabulary makes me laugh hysterically even a lobotomy cannot save a feeble mind rap bout more the nines you don't own you currency and the number a hoes you take home and attempt to act fully grown be legit not ignorant is my motto consider what effect today has on tomorrow there is no higher form of ignorance than a closed mind blind to the oppositions it will find I infiltrate your mind state to create vivid visions otherwise unobtainable incisions inflicted when your escalades in collision while still in ignition because your brain is less advanced than intellivision

1 out of 5 stars Trash, trash, and more trash..........2006-05-17

Now I usually don't give something one star because for me to give something one star it has to REALLY suck. Heck, this is only my second review. But Webbie manages to hit rock bottom with the release of his album Savage Life. And for that matter I don't think you can live to be 18 like he says he is long enough to live a life like that.

But back to the album, you can really tell that Webbie's vocabulary skills are really limited with his constant usage of the b-word and the s-word in almost every bar he uses and his hooks. Song titles don't get creative here with "G-S**t", "Gutta B", and the disgusting "Bad B". And as if that song wasnt already bad enough he does a remix with Trina (now that sounds like a winning formula?).

Webbie is definatley describing himself on the song "Retarded", why anyone would make a song like that song is beyond me. And "Gotta Show Me U Worth It" is a phrase I'm definatley going to.

So there has to be a bright spot here right? Well I havent even mentioned his single, "Give Me That", but trust me it's not good because of Webbie. Bun-B is featured in it and he manages to shine nicely without the filthy mouth. For that matter his verse is the only thing worth listening to on this whole CD if you havent thrown it out the window by now.

1 out of 5 stars Oh!!!!! it hurts please stop!.......2006-05-04

Now you see from the title I am actually polite in saying "please stop". This is ridiculous. Where did webster come from and someone please slap the clown that gave him a record deal. This is another example of superficial subject matter, poor rhymes and perfectly wasted beats. Webbie please wrap your hands around your own neck and choke yourself.

    5 out of 5 stars Raw..........2006-04-07

At first. I was a little judgemental: put off by the subject matter and what not. You know, the grown and sexy era is "In", the gangsta era is out. But as time went on, I couldn't seem to take this disc out of my player, feel me? This album is raw. There are atleast seven classics on this album - for real - that grow on you like moss on a willow tree. You gotta be careful with "You Don't Want That", "Retarded", "I Got That", "Crank It Up", "Like That", and "How You Ridin'".... Cause you either gon' crash your car or kill somebody with the spirit they envoke. "Gimme That"? Sh__, you heard the song, right?? You damn near might catch a sexual harassment case. Straight fire (its music that makes you want to do something). The rest of the album isn't bad either. Based on those seven songs, I would give it a 5(for rawness, style, and quality). The rest of them album? 3s and 4s all day. Maybe one 2 in there. Overall, this is one of the better albums of '05, and had this Cali Fella jiggin' all summer.

    Album Description

Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

1 out of 5 stars You'd better have 'Life Insurance' 'cause the album will bore you to death.......2006-11-02

'Life Insurance' is a lazy and boring album. Mr. Serv-on's debut No Limit's debut release 'Life Insurance' suffers from what plagues most of No Limit's catalog: dated sound. During its heydey in the late nineties, the entire label No Limit had a distinctive sound via in-house production team Beats By the Pound that you heard literally on every single album that came out for a particular month (yeah, you guys remember how No Limit would release like 2-4 CDs a month from their seemingly never-ending roster before P cleaned house later). Unfortunately, in my opinion, Beats By the Pound's sound waned after about the first few releases P put them to work on because the soundscapes and beats are RECYCLED and MONOTONOUS. Actually, it's amazing how BBTP was able to continually produce 18-20 something songs for 30+ people's CDs and still pump out a few memorable tunes every now and then.

I remember back to '97 when this dropped. I won't lie: it was aight back then but nearly a decade later, 'Life Insurance' is dated. It SOUNDS like something that came out in the year 1997 rather than having a ubiquitous, timeless quality like an 'Illmatic', 'Don Killamunati' or 'Hell on Earth'. It sounds like '97 and is a relic piece that belongs to '97.

Other than that, Mr. Serv-On lyrically doesn't impress or reveal much verbal talent to sear a memory worth storing in your mind at all. Although there's nothing wrong with his voice, I find his vocal delivery to be grating after awhile, which is probably due to uppity, bouncy, choppiness of his delivery. The topics cover no new ground (which isn't surprising for No Limit during this time period or at all for that matter) and the usual gangsta rap territory is explored, or revisited rather.

Now there are gangsta rappers who are able to breathe an air of freshness into the genre, and Serv-On isn't one of them. There's no artful expression or fresh examinations on street life in his rhymes: he spits his street woes in a straight-line fashion. Under certain circumstances, this would be a good thing but listening to Serv-On spit is like eating water boiled, unseasoned chicken: it's not horribly nasty but doesn't taste good either. Serv-On's lyrics and verbal game don't completely suck, but neither is he a formidable rapper.

The only reason why 'Life Insurance' gets any bump from me in '06 is because of Brotha Lynch's sick verse on track number 5 "It's Real" (Lynch kills the first verse, as is usual with him)...but then P and Serv-On ruin it. (Actually, does anyone agree that P suffers from George Lucas syndrome? You know, "I'm the creator so I feel as if I have to contribute to every single aspect of everything that has to do with my creation"? Ah well...)

If you can put up with Master P's SUPREMELY ANNOYING "ugghhs!" and the completely unnecessary and infinitely numerous adlibs he injects into nearly every track, including P talking over people, and honestly just lackluster performances from just about everybody on the album, maybe 'Life Insurance' would be enjoyable. Otherwise, steer clear of 'Life Insurance' and just about anything from No Limit's back catalog.

3 out of 5 stars OK Debut - my least favoite of his album.......2005-03-04

When Serv released this it was at the highpoint in No Limit's career. I don't think he put in as much as he should of for a debut. Out of the 4 Serv albums I have it's my least favorite (I don't have "Take A Sip"). Once again, with all No Limit releases it has way too many guests (only 3 solo's out of 18 songs). I don't like his style as much on this one compared to his later releases. It has 1 near classic, 6 good songs, 8 average songs, and 3 that I skip. Production is ok on this (By Beats by the Pound - who are normally very good). KLC did 9 songs, Craig B did 4, O'Dell did 2, and Carlos Stephens, Mo B. Dick and Brotha Lynch Hung all did 1. If you're a huge fan check it out, otherwise get "Da Next Level" or "No More Questions" - his 2 best albums.

Kremerbund Zokloppi, who currently goes under the silly name of "Mr. Serv-On", originally released this sophomore effort 9 years ago under the title "Tickle Me Elmo Romp" (he was then trying to cash in on a 1994 children's fad). It seems mighty inappropriate to "serv" it up unretouched in 2003, trying to pass it off as a supposedly hard-core rap album. What true ghetto boy could respond thuggishly to lyrics like "Happy you, happy me, tickling each other on the bum, underneath the poopy tree"? Honestly!
