This album is great and he is even better in person! I suggest everyone to check him out, I went to see him by chance and fell in love with his voice and music. In fact I'm going to see him for the 3rd time in the last year.

Martin Luther has managed to blur boundaries and venture into musical territories that most other urban artists only hint at, and in a perfect world this cd would be chalking up hits and critical acclaim. It combines funky R&B with psychedelic pop and sensual balladry, and creates a mind-bending, booty-shaking musical experience. The CD plays well from start to finish and restarts just as evenly, so you can let it play over and over again without ever growing tired. It has a good set of songs for different people, all very well performed. No bad tracks, no mistakes, and no disappointments. I highly recommend this CD to any fans of Martin Luther's 2000 release, The Calling, as well as to anyone who appreciates smart, literate, and on point artists.

Ok, so I must admit that I log on amazon.com and look at other people's reviews before a buy an record of an artist that I never heard of.
I listened and I brought and I am not mad about it. I think it was great.
I think this guy is sick with the instruments and his ability to change styles when ever he wants to is priceless.
He almost remeinds me of Van Hunt and Lenny Kravitz.
I can appreciate that.

I was truly moved by the sweetness of his voice. With very little back up-no violins, horns nor electric piano- the thrill of Gage's pure soul was enticing. I saw him perform on French television (TV5), and I made it a point to write down the name so I could search for his music. I understand French and I am eager to get the album and sing along!

R&B is alive and well in France........2006-11-17

I haven't been this excited over an R&B album since the early 90s. I never realized that there was r&B in France but Gage has made this very clear! Soul Rebel has something on it for everyone from the painfully beautiful "Je T'Aime Quand Meme" to the all out dance jams like "Trop Fresh", "Ce Soir" and N'Arette Pas. I do not understand French nor do I need to . Music is the universal language, especially with this album. Thank god for imports!

Can I Call This Classic???.......2006-12-04

This review is definitely up for debate, but Rebel Soul is classic material. The beats are bangin' from front to back and reflect the sampling sport Hip-Hop was in '91. The rhymes are decent, but what set them apart are the the Afrocentric themes. You can't be too Black these days. Lastly, the vibes from this album are incredible. It just feels good. I played this tape 'til it popped back in the day. And this is with the KEY! Sissiessssss!!!

90's Rap Sleeper .......2005-08-31

This album was the 2nd sleeper album to come from the X-Clan camp. Interestingly enough the other album was from a woman as well (Queen Mother Rage). Nevertheless this album was a strong debut for Isis despite the incessant interjections by Professor X. The beats were good but utilized a large number of house and Afro-pean rythms to help it along. Not that you noticed any of this once Isis (Lin Que) started to rhyme. Also the African movement was central to her theme so it worked rather well. It really was a shame that her career never blossomed. Other than a quick cd5 that followed a few years later Isis faded to obscurity far before her time. This CD is a true gem of 90's rap if you can find it.

One of the best........2003-05-13

This CD gives praise and connection from Ancient African Wisdom to Current day Hip-Hop Music. Even though this, Professor-X, The X-Clan, and Brother-J, are not out there now, their musical genius extends throughout time.

Southern by way of Germany.......2006-07-10

For their 1998 album Rebel Soul, Bonfire took a decidedly Southern approach. That's not to say they became the Allman Brothers overnight. The band still delivers their signature brand of melodic hard rock; it just has a noticeable Southern flavor to it. I'm not really sure why a German rock band is serenading the American South, but the experiment seems to work, especially in helping Rebel Soul stand out a bit from the rest of Bonfire's back catalog. It may not rock as hard as Fireworks, but the more laid-back approach on this album works well with the band's ultra-melodic songwriting style. Bonfire's cover of Dixie may leave you scratching your head (or thinking "dudes, you're from Germany, not Alabama!"), but their cover of the Cat Stevens classic the First Cut is the Deepest was nicely done.

Overall, I was very pleased with Rebel Soul. It may not be the typical Bonfire album, but fans should know by now that the band rarely disappoints.

highly recommend this, three early cd's for the price on one. some good versions of songs that were re-recorded for his later alblums. this music is all up and happy and positive. still reggae but sometimes ska/reggae. Rainbow Country is a great song.
