Album Description

Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Homer and Jethro (Hall of Fame 2001).......2007-06-18

WAY COOL. If you are a fan of these two nuts and then you will want to add this to your collection. It is truely them at their all time best. I have several cassettes with thier works they are funny. But this CD is my all time best collection of their crazy parody music. A most excellent find and would recommend it to all.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to your Homer & Jethro collection.......2006-01-15

An entertaining album of Homer & Jetho's early work. If this is to be your first Home & Jethro album, though, I'd reccommend "America's Song Butchers, The Weird World of Homer and Jethro" instead. This "Hall of Fame" album obviously takes from old 78's and is pre hi-fi. Not a lot was done to clean the sound up; listening with headphones can be painful. But the lyrics are amusing and the talent is there. (Please also read Thomas Ferranti's review. I listened to the album and it does not contain the Wurlitzer overdub, thankfully)

Now if they'd just re-release "Barefoot Ballads", their excellent hillbilly album that introduced me to Homer and Jethro in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Not their very best but the best example of the early years........2004-08-27

Well - lets say it's the 1930s or 40s and you own a record company named King Records, and you sign Homer & Jethro to their first recording contract, produced countless 78rpm 10" discs, and sold a fair amount of them when all of a sudden, modern technology develops the 33rpm 12" disc, and no one wants to buy 78s anymore, Homer and Jethro move on to RCA records, and manage to get quiet a lot of attention so you repackage their back catalog via several 12" album collections.

Now it's many many years later. H&J have all but been forgotten. Except now - someone releases a couple of CDs of their RCA sides - and you get an offer from someone to license some of the old 78s recordings - and, well, to call it as such, maybe you won't sell as many, as if you billed it, instead, as some kind of "best-of" - and that's exactly what has occurred here. Well, for shame for shame. (Tho for all I know, maybe these WERE the most played 78s - could be.)

The material on this disc IS a must-have peek into those early days, when they werent as much into the country hillbilly humor then, and played alot of generally straightforward folk type stuff, albeit the humor IS still there - in fact - some of these early tracks are what got me hooked in the first place.

A good dip into the well of 78s, otherwise collecting dust. "Groundhog" is still a classic - their 'ad-libbing' is great - you can tell they were young, but really enjoying themselves!

Just a warning, though - back in the 70s, some idiot decided to take a batch of these 78s and record a new layer of wurlitzer organ or some such thing over the top - (as if it needed anything!)- especially not the sound of one of those cheesy keyboards with the silly synthesized drums and bassline!

So - I can't tell you if this is the one with or without that overdub or not. I was so excited to see I could write this review I didnt stop to see if there were any sound samples to hear! :(

Here's to you, and Homer and Jethro! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THIS COLLECTION IS ALREADY A LEGEND.......2007-04-29

My basic interest is in 60s rock and british invasion. I do like to hear their influences of course. This awesome collection is a must for any fan of Muddy, Wolf, Otis Rush, Robert Johnson, Little Walter, although the music is more in the doo wop style than blues. The amazing thing about James Brown is that he wrote all these songs. This collection properly captures what a mega-giant he was. If Zep and Clapton fans lionize Muddy and Johnson, Zappa fans need to look to James Brown.

4 out of 5 stars the true Roots of a Revolution..........2007-02-21

Well, if you're reading this review it's already too late to take advantage of this great lil package. Limited to 5000 copies this gem has all but disappeared from the shelves of Amazon. I wish they would do the entire James Brown catalog just like this one, chronologically.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Remastered package.......2007-01-21

This 2-CD set collects James Browns' singles for the Federal Label. I am not a fan of 1950s rock, but I do like 60s & 70s r&b, particularly any artist that can really get down or belt out a tune like no one else (Ike & Tina or James Brown). This collection presents both the a & b side of his singles (almost all of them mono) up to 1960. It also includes a booklet detailing the info on each single. The remastering (from the original source tapes) sounds as good as mono from this period can (with only the demo exhibiting sub-par sound quality). This would make a nice addendum to your James Brown collection, though I wouldn't begin with this unless you're a big 50s fan. However, the CD is supposedly limited to 5,000 copies, so if you think you might want it, you should probably snatch it up quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Something very precious.......2004-11-16

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

5 out of 5 stars Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

I remember hearing Hawkshaw Hawkins coming from my grandfather's Buick radio when I was growing up. Here is an incredible voice that is just plain smooth and full of class. There are very few songs that can ever be truly labelled as classics, and Hawkins' "Lonesome 7-7203" is right up there with Faron Young's "Hello Walls". There are also a handful of old Standards that Hawkshaw makes his own, with "SunnySide of the Mountain" being the best. Overall, a very good album, and one you need to complete any true country music collection.

    5 out of 5 stars The Ambassador's first jewel........2006-05-12

This is the solo album that crowned E-40 the king of rap. This is E-40 at his rawest and hungriest and he kills the competition with every tongue twisting rhyme. His backbreaking flow will hypnotize you from the opening track "Drought Season" and will keep you in submission until the final verse of "Rasta Funky Style", I believe, if you have the original version. The Jive version is still good but it misses three classic cuts. the aforementioned Rasta Funky Style, Get em Up, arguably one of the best songs on the original cd, and Tanji Part II. If you are one of the few fortunate individuals to steal own the original copy guard it with your life because you are in possesion of something real special. 5 out of 5 stars for federal. This was the making of the worlds greatest game spitter and the most innovative hip hop star of all time.

    4 out of 5 stars Great start.......2004-06-27

This is a dope album by a very young and under rated e-40. I brought this in 97 and took a chance buying it because I never heard it. im a big e-40 fan and i have of his other cds but this one got by me. The song federal is super tight that will break your speakers. This cd is great but not as good as the mail man which came after this. But this is a must has if your a e-40 fan cause it has great those old cali mob style beats.

    5 out of 5 stars A great rap classic!.......2004-01-10

E-40 is at his best on this CD. All the tracks have cool beats and flows. If you are an E-4o fan you would like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classicc Mobb Music.......2003-09-21

Being E-40's first true "LP" to be released, this album's quality amazes me even today. Every one of the 11 songs is worth listening to, and there are very few slow parts on the album. This disc is very underground and street sounding, considering it was released so early in E-40's career when he was still sellin' tapes out of his trunk. But after this CD was released, the north bay area rap scene changed greatly and new respect was given to the area.

The disc starts off with an instant classic track, "Drought Season"... this song talks about exactly what the title says - the lack of 'substances' going around in the area. Don't need to explain more than that. Following this track is "Rat Heads", a pretty good cut about snitches in the game. True words spoken on this track. Skipping a couple [good] tracks, we come to two of my favorites on the album - "Hide N Seek" and "Let Him Have It". Earl injects a whole lot of story-telling into his raps and both are like a street-book-on-tape. Both of the beats are insanely well produced and hit your subs with madness.

The second half of the CD is just as good as the first. Near the end of the disc, we have "Carlos Rossi" which is possibly the best song on the album, featuring the Click (E-40's group from Vallejo) and a tight beat. "Nuttin' Ass Nigga" is a diss towards Mac Dre, and although the beef has been settled these days, back then things weren't as calm. A great song, even if it is towards another one of my favorite rappers.

Overall this disc is a street classic and anyone who enjoys Bay Area rap should not be without it. While not quite as classic as his later albums, "In A Major Way", and "Tha Hall Of Game", Federal paved the way for future hits. Nothing less than an A.

    OVERALL SCORE: 92 / 100

    4 out of 5 stars Definatly a must have!!!!.......2001-12-17

This is definatly a must have album if you haven't heard the original E-40 Federal album. This is not the original. If you have heard the original album, you will be disappointed because it is short a couple of songs. Plus, the songs that are on this album are remixed. I still have the original and guard it with my life.

    1 out of 5 stars Remakes.......2005-08-13

Later in his career Charley Pride did a massive recording session where he re-recorded all his biggest hits.

At the time it was well intentioned because almost all of the original versions of these songs were unavailable.

But be forewarned, the songs on this disc are all remakes.

5 out of 5 stars country music hall of fame 2000 charlie pride.......2001-02-05

This album is another example of Charlie Pride's unique voice and why he was voted into the country music hall of fame this year. Every Charlie Pride fan should own this CD.

    1 out of 5 stars Again a re-release.......2004-04-19

I would like to thank the person for the re-release comment. I am sick and tired of buying CD's that have weird, unpopular versions of the artists hit songs, be it alternative version or live recordings (the live ones really torqe me). It should be clearly marked on the CD, which this one is not. Thank's again for the warning and if you want the original Shelly West duet look elswhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great Country Music!.......2003-07-08

I am going to disagree with the previous review. I liked the Frizzell & West partnership as much as the next fan, but I look at it this way ... David Frizzell is a great country stylist, and it's a shame that today's radio is afraid to go against the grain and play more of this caliber of artist! Even though Shelly is not on this recording, it's a good remake!

    1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs - a rerelease!.......2003-05-05

My title says it all. This is a rerelease and the song "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" is NOT with Shelly West. Avoid this CD unless you don't mind a rerelease. I'm sorry I bought it.

    Album Details

An Underrated Gem Gets Its First Digital Release Courtesy of Radioactive Records. The Bizarrely-named Federal Duck Made Its Appearance on the Musicor Label in 1968. Formed by Banjo Exponent George Stavis, Federal Duck (Named after the Federal Duck Stamp Program which was Enacted by Conservationist Jay "ding" Darling and Us President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1934) Produced this Lone Musical Effort Which, Once You Get Past the Absurd Cover, is a Consistently Good Album that is Mildly Jazzy, Wtih Some Fine Bass and an Ever-present Darkish Vibe. There Are a Few Upbeat Mold-breaking Songs (One Even Sounds Like the Holy Modal Rounders), but Generally a Soft-psych Feel Pervades Throughout.

    1 out of 5 stars Derrivative Crappolla.......2007-07-12

This is the usual mid to late 60s garage band noodling around on instruments they barely understand and trying to somehow pass it off as so "groovy" and "out there" that somehow that takes the place of "good." Oh, sure, sometimes these bands made some music that was flat out genius, but this one sure wasn't it.

The only thing interesting about this group is that Pulitzer Prize winning humor columnist/novelist Dave Barry played guitar in the band. He once wrote that the band was pretty lousy and that its breakup was due to a drunken night of throwing amps out of a dormitory window. No one had the cash to replace the equipment and the group ceased to be, according to Barry.

4 out of 5 stars Disjointed, but with some lovely mournful folk-garage tunes.......2006-03-25

When I get my time machine working, maybe the eighteenth or nineteenth thing I'm gonna do is port back to the studio where the Federal Duck were making their (I assume-it's on Radioactive, so notes there's not) sole album, grab hold of the pseudonymous producer's lapels and hiss, "Listen, bub, you got an ace mournful New England garage pop songwriter in this George Stavis kid-so drop the rest of the repertoire and focus on the band genius and in 35 years fanzine writers will cream all over this disc instead of giving middling reviews that rely on that tired old time travel gimmick." The Stavis tunes really are strong enough to recommend the whole album, which when not working this haunting, wintery academic sound ala the Rising Storm plays around with neo-Vaudeville, heavy acid rock, old time banjos and a smattering of head humor, all played with sophistication and imaginatively arranged. Surprised I've never heard of these ducks before. (review originally appeared in Scram Magazine #22)
