5 out of 5 stars Classic all the way.......2007-05-29

This is a classic collection of clever humor, full of nuggets my family has loved for years. Brooks works fast, and Reiner is a classic straight man. The best parts are where they're obviously cracking each other up. You can tell that the recording had a lot of editing, but it works. Considering some of the subject matter, they really did a great job of keeping it clean. Great stuff.

1 out of 5 stars The 2000 year old man.......2005-10-06

I thought it was great. I had just seen the musical 'The Producers' while in London so decided to get the full set plus two others. Hilarious. I do get funny looks from car drivers when while waiting for the lights to change I am laughing my head off. This is my sense of humour. Thanks for your great service.

5 out of 5 stars Impovised comedy at it's best.......2005-09-02

Before Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein) and Carl Reiner (The Man With Two Brains, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid) had established themselves as successful comedy directors they were writers for The Sid Caesar show. "The 2000 Year Old Man" was created during breaks in writers meetings where the two would entertain the others by imrovising a questions and answers scenario. Brooks played a man who has been alive for the past 2000 years and Reiner his interviewer. We get to hear the real stories about Jesus Christ, Joan of Arc, Robin Hood as well as tips on how to live longer (who better to tell you than a 2000 year old man!) and snapshots of coffee house life, movie directors, artists and lots more. Brooks is truly gifted at thinking on his feet despite Reiner occasionally trying to trip him up when he contradicts himself or backs himself into a comedic corner. The playfulness between them as they try to make each other laugh is a joy to the ears and it's great to hear a comedy duo that has aged so very well alongside so many of their dated peers. This four CD box set contains almost all of the recorded material available of this outstanding example of comedy improvisation and an accompanying booklet provides ample background information and interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy Gems (for the most part)........2005-02-18

THE COMPLETE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN is a collection of 4 different comedy albums featuring the improvised works of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. The albums included with the set are: "2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks At the Cannes Film Festival", and "Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen".

"2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is one of the greatest comedy albums of all time. It was pure genius in its day and the comic spark heard on the album remains just as funny today as it probably did when it was firs released.

"2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is my favorite album out of the set. The 2000-Year-Old Man makes a return appearance on the album, but I find the "Two Hour Old Baby" sketch and "Psychiatric Society" to be more hilarious. "Watch the eyes."

"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks At The Cannes Film Festival" is my least favorite album in the bunch. Maybe its because the album was taped in Europe, I don't know, but the sketches here are just not as funny as the ones on the other albums.

"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen" brings back the 2000-Year-Old Man after nearly a decade of absence. The entire sketch is one long interview between the Reporter (Reiner) and the 2000-Year-Old-Man. I kind of wish there were some other sketches here, but there's enough hilarity to keep one interested.

The set includes a booklet that explains how the 2000-Year-Old Man came to be and the transcript of and interview between Saul Kahan and Reiner and Brooks. What's so fascinating about this whole collection is that none of it was rehearsed (except for parts of 2000 & 13 because Brooks was so scared to do the character again). The 2000-Year-Old Man was born out of improv. Reiner and Brooks make a great comic duo and have gone on to become some of the most powerful people in show business. This set of albums is a wonderful tribute to the character that made their careers.

Mel Brooks is one of those things that makes life worth living, and this is him at his best. And that Carl Reiner ain't half bad, neither. A bargain at any price.

4 out of 5 stars Still funny, but not as funny.......2007-05-29

The original package of four "2000-yr-old Man" discs is where it's at. They kept it clean, so my kids could enjoy it, too. There's a lot of explicit language on this disc, which is disappointing. Still, it's good enough, and the chemistry is still there between Brooks and Reiner.

3 out of 5 stars These Guys Are Still Funny.......2007-05-07

This album is a useful part of anyone's repertoire if you just want a good laugh provided by two old pros in the comedy business. There's nothing complicated; just good fun.

5 out of 5 stars 2000 Year-Old Man in 2000.......2006-08-12

Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner are great. A worthy sequel to their original interview.

5 out of 5 stars Abdominal exercise.......2006-05-30

The best word I can come up with to describe this album is riotous. Where Brooks and Reiner came up with this concept, I don't know, but Brooks must have a wild imagination to have developed this outrageous character. Just listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars I gotta get all the 2000 year old man records.......2006-01-23

Mel Brooks improvising answers to Carl Reiner's straight interview questions. This one after they'd already done this bit decades ago. Funny stuff. In fact, I've rarely ever played any comedy album more than 1 or 2 times except for the Woody Allen Stand Up Comedy 2 record set material from 1964-1968.

This stuff is funny and I like hearing it again, say once a year on average. Sorta like watching a good movie again. There's hardly any klinkers on this album, maybe none.

I'm just glad they've done several of these albums. The idea is sound and Reiner and Brooks play perfectly off each other. Reiner is just barely not too stuffy enough to be a good straight man to Brooks who just barely is able to keep from totally unraveling. In fact, I think it's Reiner who keeps Brooks reined in and Brooks who keeps Reiner from getting too stiff. Funny stuff kids. A gotta own album. chrisbct@hotmail.com

3 out of 5 stars Elevator to the stars........2005-06-28

101 Strings were know for their "elevator music" style instrumental albums. This album is something else entirely. The strings are still there, but they are pushed into the background. Instead, most of these tracks have rock guitars (heavy on the fuzztone) as the lead instruments. Lord knows what the little old ladies who were fans of 101 Strings thought when they heard this album. To my ears, it sounds like music from the soundtrack of an exploitation movie about hippies. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. The CD adds three bonus tracks from another offbeat album by 101 Strings, which featured "erotic" music. The most interesting of these tracks features the sound of a woman moaning while being whipped. This is a fun album that will appeal to people who like "offbeat" music.

5 out of 5 stars Startling hip theme LP from 101 Strings.......2002-02-17

It's hard to imagine how the moribund stylings of the 101 Strings could mate with by-the-numbers psychedelic sounds (phase shifters, oscillators, etc.) and space themes to produce something as compelling as this 1969 release. But brilliantly compelling it is. Though certain to have confounded 101 Strings fans of its day, and failed in any appeal to the contemporary rock or jazz crowds, its reappearance as part of the lounge revival is a blessing.

There's a nearly unexplainable alchemy that makes this so hypnotically listenable. Once past the kitsch factor, listeners will find themselves enveloped in superb bubblegum melodies, rendered with orchestrated strings and guitars that range from crystalline to exotically fuzzed. The drumming would fill any discotheque dance floor, and the organs hum with the power of the Spencer Davis Group (whose "Gimme Some Lovin'" riff is borrowed for "A Disappointed Love With a Desensitized Robot").

Three bonus tracks from the 101 Strings erotic period (strings + moaning woman = wow!) fill out this reissue. "Karma Sitar" is a flavorful faux-Indian raga, while "Whiplash" adds daring (for a mainstream 1969 release) whip cracks to the erotic equation.

Unlike the hucksters who predict the future and then disappear when their prophesies fail to materialize, the 101 Strings laid theirs to tape, for all the world to revisit "beyond the year 2000." With Scamp's digital reissue (which, unfortunately, contains no production, playing or songwriting credits), one realizes that these Astro Sounds are still reaching into the future.

5 out of 5 stars Haze Back to Yesteryear.......2001-06-09

My father purchased this record for me in 1970. I can still remember the feeling that it gave me back then. And listening to these cuts brings me back to the heyday years that followed - Streaking, Free Jam Concerts (In a world where NOTHING seems FREE anymore), Free Love and the Space Race. I highly recommend this 101 Strings Collection to anyone who wasn't a mote in Daddy's eye and those who can appreciate the growing pains of music in those days.

Note: Moog was just coming out when this album was produced...if this release or the original album is not a collector's item now, they should be...

5 out of 5 stars This is a cult album!.......2000-03-27

Fans of Danny Elfman, Joe Meek and AIR should check this one out. Space Muzak with vintage synth sounds and fuzz guitars! One of those kitschy albums only the 60's could have produced, and only contemporary ears can fully appreciate its weirdness and (probably accidental) inventiveness.

Look at the price of this CD compared to the rest of the 101 strings catalog. Doesn't it tell you something? For a delicious bonus, three tracks have been added, with "Whiplash" being the obvious highlight: a woman moans and screams to the sound of whips! It'll make even Serge Gainsbourg blush.

This is one cool album, get it and tell all your friends about it! Build the cult.

5 out of 5 stars Faith & Disease.......2006-04-06

The beautiful voices and lyrics are what make faith and disease one of the best(in my oppinion, the best) dark folk bands ever. Beneath the trees is not only one of their best cd's, but the song of the same title is very nice and calming and one of their best as well. I highly recommend those whom like the gothic style of music to get this cd, but I recommend it to all anyway!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful music.......2004-12-07

Faith and Disease is such a wonderful example of music from the Projekt label. I am a pretty intense industrial and ebm fan, but releases like this further my interest into gothic and folk genres as well. Pick it up if you can, it's truly enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars "Ethereal folk" worthy of a Grammy.......2002-02-19

This is their best album yet. It goes even deeper with the moody, intimate style on the previous album, "Insularia." Dara Rosenwasser has never sounded better, and Charlotte Sather is a terrific addition (voice and flute). If The Cowboy Junkies did a Black Tape for A Blue Girl album, it would be in the range of "Beneath The Trees." Slow-dance music for a midwestern prom where nobody brought a date.

The opening duet is worthy of Queen Elizabeth's court. From there, the songs strike an amazing balance. They're slow and solemn without the ambient snooze factor of full-on ethereal. There IS a beat and rhythm - it's just applied very gently.

Most of the tracks are similar in tempo and style. "Mayim: Water Is Flowing" is perfect. Just my opinion. The vibe is similar to U2's "A Sort of Homecoming." There are only ten words in the song, but they're sung in a dreamy, hypnotic manner. "This Part of Fortune Lies" is another winner.

Their rendition of a traditional murder ballad, "Banks of The Ohio," should've been nominated for a Grammy. One question, though: CAN I HEAR A MURDER BALLAD WHERE THE WOMAN BUSTS A ROCK OVER THE GUY'S HEAD FOR A CHANGE? The song is in C-major; Charlotte's D-major vocal part at the end is poignant.

Get this album and "Insularia." The earlier CDs are good, but these last two are amazing. Soothing, mysterious and catchy. The songs alternate between mournfulness and innocence in a very subtle way.

5 out of 5 stars ingenious.......2001-02-22

I don't have the CD but I've heard most of it on the radio it is really good tasteful music. Calm at times but adding a trance effect. I have no idea what kind of genre you could classify it as Industrial/Trance/Classical/Techno?!?! But anyways I think that everyone should buy this CD the group was on the radio it from what they talked about it sounds like they worked very hard anjd dilligently ok!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of majestic........2006-03-14

By the time the two albums featured on this CD were released in 1980 and 1982 the urban R&B market was going through many changes--thankfully, The O'Jays were able to maintain their high-quality output throughout the decade with superb tracks like "I Like To See Us Get Down", "Don't Walk Away Mad", "Your Body's Here With Me", "Girl, Don't Let It Get You Down", "To Prove My Love" and "Once Is Not Enough" being just as good as any of the group's previous Philadelphia International recordings. In retrospect, these two albums provided the O'Jays with a smooth transition from the 1970s to the '80s.

    5 out of 5 stars Once again, a collector's dream........2006-03-02

After purchasing So Full of Love/Identify Yourself, buying this CD was a no-brainer. Again, two very outstanding albums on a single CD. Some of the O'jays best vocals and arrangement. Buying these two CDs was a real bargain, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Feel better after the ten year Therapy?.......2001-05-14

Not bad. Almost really the best of the Irish guys playing a good good good (and good) rock music.

Some nice songs are surely missing. It happens, especially when the space on a cd is slightly limited.

But most of their famous stuff is right here, ready to please your ears with every memorable sound. Just do yourself a favour, enjoy the every track this unique band put on the cd, trace their history from the glorious 1993 to the less successful recent years, and be sure Therapy? are not gone, and we may easily expect their new chedevres with their new albums.

4 out of 5 stars a greatest hits album of sorts............2001-03-23

As one of the most diehard Therapy? fans in the United States, I recommend this album to the new listener who hasn't previously heard them. As a greatest hits album of sorts, it covers most of the diverse sound of Therapy?. Although Semi-Detached and Troublegum are the best albums(and the hardest to get in the U.S.), this album is a good idea of what Therapy? sounds like for the new fan. For the Diehard fan like myself(who collects as much Therapy? stuff as I can get), this is not really worth picking up. But being that Therapy? isn't the most popular band in the world, this album is likely a worthwhile buy for most music fans.

    4 out of 5 stars Extreme Comedy..........2001-01-10

is what this album is. The songs are very comically delightful but if you're a HARD rock fan this album may not be for you. Though packed with quite a few nice beats, and the ever popular (if only in my mind) "Screamager", it proved to not be quite the Therapy? I was looking for. It did however keep me laughing, maybe it will do the same for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not as stunning as it could be.......2000-11-19

Therapy epitomize the overlooked band that could be huge if merely exposed to the right audience at the right time. Their particularly vitrioloic brand of alt-metal would seem like a can't-miss prospect for worldwide (and especially US) success, but such has never really been the case. Sure they have their fans, but not any sort of notoriety or legacy beyond the hardcore fans.

So when I saw that Therapy, of all bands, was putting together a freaking Greatest Hits, I was... surprised... to say the least. Shouldn't "Greatest Hits" packages be reserved for overblown hype jockeys like Fleetwood Mac, or Foreigner? Then I figured that maybe this is their effort to reach a wider audience, package all their best stuff, sit it out there and hope for the best.

One problem, though. This AIN'T their best stuff. It's weighted too heavily with Suicide Pact material, forsake's Infernal Love's best track (Misery) for its most superfluous (Diane, why a cover?!) and attempts to reel in existing fans with 2 mediocre unreleased tracks. The result is a Best Of that neither hits all the highlights that it could from a great career, nor has enough decent rare material for the dedicated.

Therapy have had so many b-sides and toss-offs that a compilation of those simply begs to be done. The fans would eat it up, even it took 2 volumes or so to do. Then commence with a good anthology/overview that took tracks from all the stuff, without favoring one album or another, and be sure to include the best from said albums, not just the most palatable or friendly.

I didn't have the heart to rate this lower than 4-stars, but I probably should have. It just doesn't fulfill on any level. So much promise wasted.

5 out of 5 stars BRIAN IS A FOUND TREASURE.......2001-03-25

The only problem with a talent such as Brian De Lorenzo is that he doesn't record more. Few vocalists can communicate the sheer joy of presenting a song as Brian. You want an eclectic, surprising collection of wonderful songs? You want a singer with grace, terrific phrasing and style to spare? You want this CD. And, for gosh sakes, where else are you going to hear two beautiful numbers from the forgotten Broadway musical "Angel"?

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Moving.......2000-02-27

Brian De Lorenzo has an exceptional tenor voice, and his esoteric selection of songs is extremely appealing and refreshing (especially if one is tired of cabaret artists rendering the same tired numbers). His intensity and sincerity are extremely evident. This is really a beautiful and moving compilation. I look forward to his next album.
