Product Description
UNLEARN (un-lurn)v. To return to that which we never had to learn in the first place, e.g. how to eat, sleep, love, smile, play, and listen without judgment; to recognize cultural sublimity over commercial and mass influence.

Combining the freshest man-made beats with ingenius harmonic horn lines and ill lyrical delivery, not to mention the only hiphop sousaphonist/composer/human DJ ever, "Unlearn" also features appearances by some of the most forward-thinking minds in music, including:

Talib Kweli of Reflection Eternal/Black Star - Undoubtedly one of the most ground-breaking, driven, absolutely illest MC's in the world. Reppin Brooklyn, NY. His new album with DJ Hi-Tek is in stores now on Rawkus Records.

Mike Ladd - Cambridge-bred Bronx-residing poet whose lyrical mastery will leave you speechless after taking you on a journey around the universe. A true wordsmith. His latest project is The Infesticons, who just released "Gun Hill Road" on Big Dada Records. His solo album "Welcome to the Afterfuture" is diverse, moving, frequently hilarious and always serious.

DJ Skooly - Reppin Chicago’s own Platter Pirates, the most-feared battle crew in the MidWest. The youngest man appearing on the album. If you sleep on Skooly, he’ll probably wake you up in 3 years by cracking you on the skull with his turntables, and leave the world's tightest mixtape shoved in your ear.

Ike Willis - Frank Zappa's long-time vocalist blessed us with a track that has received the most enthusiastic replies from our fans. We're just glad he could shake things up a bit. Ike can sing his ass off, nuff said.

The title track's exposure on the massive Mortal Kombat original soundtrack gave this San Francisco-based duo a shot at success. Their blend of concise, ambient techno and Depeche Mode-like melodicism works best on a remixed "Unlearn," and the sumptious "The Breathing Room." --Jeff Bateman

It really doesn't get any better than "Unlearn". I got it the day it came out and I still haven't grown tired of it. Easily my favorite CD, I have probably listened to this almost everyday. I have over a 1000 CDs in my collection and still haven't found one to top this album. Everyone needs to own it!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as there 1st album.......2006-01-10

This album is allot different than there 1st album. this album is more trance like and allot calmer. I prefer the harder techno-industrial style of the 1st album. I do enjoy this album though and it's too bad this band is no longer around.

4 out of 5 stars Some really good stuff!.......2005-12-11

Unlearn is a mixed collection of ambient synth and dark synthpop interwoven throughout the album....definitely hosts some of my favorite songs. You'll get instant gratification from the first six tracks, the rest had to grow on me, and now every track is excellent.

It's too bad these guys aren't still together these days...I'm sure if they stuck with it, they would have some really amazing stuff in the synthpop, and perhaps even the ebm realm. I've seen them on different projects, such as Basic Pleasure Model (founder Paul Sebastian) and Hednoize (Daniel Lenz), but haven't really heard much of either project.

I highly recommend for any synthpop fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Collection of Songs.......2005-03-14

Remember when you were young and the world looked like an open book, waiting for you to jump into its pages and write your own epic? Well, back in 1995, the World Wide Web was that book and a lot of bands hopped onto the cyber-everything bandwagon. The only problem is, as many bands and TV shows find out, references tend to date a song or CD and reduce the long-term listenability of it. Things dated lose relvance quickly...only universal concepts last and stay fresh.

With its earlier release, Psykosonik kind of dated itself as a simple rave-thrash/anthem techno group and that album sounds really corny today...but Unlearn is completely different in that it relies solely on the power of lush, organic synths coupled with steady beats and soaring vocals that don't date the songs with references, but rather develop more complex and diaphanous themes like mental expansion and higher consciousness. It taps into a very primitive root, yet also inspires and blossoms into the conscious mind. Some of the music is almost like aural meditation, yet there are songs with a driving beat that are great for the car.

I love all of the songs on this CD, with "Dreaming Real" being the sort of anthem of the entire work, I think. I've had this CD for the better part of 10 years and it has endured hundreds, if not thousands of listenings. I HIGHLY recommend this CD as the foundation of any electronica collection...or even if you're just looking for an album that will make you dream while wakened.

From the moment you push play, the opening track (Secret Life) draws you into this surreal yet beautiful auido world. As you open your mind to the sound that is Psykosonik, the tone blends seamlessly into the title track Unlearn, the first vocal track on the album. The disc continues in its melodic splendor through the rest of the 15 tracks, and is perfection from start to finish. Standout tracks include Unlearn, Need to Die, Eye of the Mind, Ride and Secret Life. Well worth the money, and one of the best purchases I've ever made. Highly recommended. Too bad they broke up, but I'm looking forward to the new project, Basic Pleasure Model.

Gordon Grdina, guitar; Francois Houle, clarinets; Karlis Silins, bass; Kenton Loewen, drums. Box Cutter cuts through stylistic boundaries. The players weave in and out of free-form improvisations, grooves, and lyrical melodic statements with equal enjoyment. The band leaves no stone unturned, making use of every possibility that presents itself. This is a band that loves to improvise. It will make music out of anything: the sound of wind, a chime, a feel, a phrase, a tune... Box Cutter feels equally at home making music out of pure sound and texture as making a soulful melody sing.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but why so Explicit.......2007-01-17

The Youngblood Brass Band is an excellent band. I like their tight ensemble playing. Their solos are adequate, except for the sousa player, who is fantastic. It is too bad that they feel the need to curse constantly during the tunes. I am not a fan of rap in general, but their early albums were good, because it didn't get in the way of the fine playing too much. I hate to pay so much for one of their rare CDs to have half of the music go in the toilet, because of the language.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing since breathing!!.......2005-08-09

I saw an add for YBB in a local paper, and I was extremely interested in a brass band with an MC. So I drove about an hour away just to see what they were like, and let me tell you it was worth every mile. I am not a novice to the music world, I have been playing in bands ever since I can remember, but I have never heard anything like what YBB was doing. What they do is mix every kind of music into one. Taking hip-hop loops and converting them to horn lines, then writing different lyrics over it, is incredible. The horn lines are so crisp and tight, something that comes from some serious James Brown like discipline. One of the things that is hard to translate from the live show to the album is that there are three drummers, not just one guy on a set. They divide up the set like a marching band would. This allows for intense driving drum beats. If you are into swing, jazz, hip-hop, afro-Cuban, rap, or just some serious horn skills get this album or any album by YBB, and if you ever get the chance to see them, DO IT, you wont be disappointed. This is definitely one of the most revolutionary bands, that I think rank up there with bands like, Robert Randolph, Pink Floyd, ATDI, and The Mars Volta.

5 out of 5 stars Its YoungBlood, enough said.......2005-05-04

This is simply to most innovative band I have ever encountered. If you don't like these guys, youre not listening to the right music, period. They meld New Orleans jazz, hip-hop, funk, latin, and so much more into an incredible and powerful sound. If you like these guys, go see them live, they are absolutely amazing. If you go to high school or college, they WILL come if you have the means to book them. Theyve come to SUNY Fredonia twice while Ive been here, and last time they spent three days doing master classes on improv and jazz, and put on an amazing show. And they are the nicest bunch of guys youll meet.
Personally, i think this is the best of the three albums. They have a nice blend of jazz and hip-hop on this one, and the sousaphone sounds by far the best out of the three (soon to be 4!!) albums. If youre more into the hip-hop, check out center.level.roar, their 3rd album, which isnt available on amazon :( (boo hiss). The sound is a little bit harsher, especially from Nat (Sousaphone), but its anoter excellent album. Also, make sure you go to amazon.co.uk and buy their live ablum, live.places, out on may 9th. Its definitely work the 13.28 pounds (bout $25 US) You will not be disappointed.

the Youngblood Brass Band is aboulutly amazing. some of the best brass band stuff out there. if you liked this and want to get into some of the same, check out the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
also, YB sells their album's on their website, http://www.youngbloodbrassband.com/, and the prices are MUCH more reasonable than on Amazon

5 out of 5 stars Bang! Zoom! Pow!.......2004-03-03

I first became aware of Youngblood Brass Band at a concert on the third floor of an old warehouse in LaCrosse, WI. I rarely buy CDs these days, but I bought their first two albums immediately. Their blend of New Orleans jazz and hip-hop, with distinct flavors of Afro-Cuban percussion and an arranging style with hints of top-level drum corps (no doubt gleaned from co-creator David Henzie-Skogen's stint in the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps), is not only one of the most seamless crossover styles ever created, but also has more raw passion and power than any other band I've ever heard. The other co-creator, sousaphonist Nat McIntosh, has such technical majesty you'll wonder if your ears are hallucinating. Throughout his material, he makes a tuba sound like a dj turntable, electro-synthetic bass, rock organ, and even some sounds that defy classification. Having started playing together in high school, the core of the band has developed an incredibly tight synchronization with each other, and it shows. Each of their songs is well-crafted and has beautiful transitions and grooves in it. Their infectious fire will keep you dancing and humming their tunes to yourself for weeks, even months. And "fire" really is the only word to describe it; it's like having a horn line throw gasoline on you, a snare drummer/mc master strike a match to you, and then having a whole sousaphone full of liquid oxygen dumped on you just to kick it up a notch. In short, there is no band more passionate about what they do or how they do it.

This album is my favorite out of the three they've released to date. The balance of parts and influences is perfect. No one song on the album really stands out, but that's because they all approach such a high level of quality. If anything could be said against this album, it is that I sometimes find that a few of the songs blend together. Nearly all of their material is based on simple minor descending/ascending chord progressions, but for what they're trying to do, this is totally appropriate. Compared to "Word On The Street," their first album, the sound is much more solid and rehearsed. Tracks like "Bloodshot" and "It's All Over" are classic Youngblood; their covers of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" and Madonna's "Human Nature" are perfectly arranged; "Acousticon Theme" is a slower, meaty groove that will give you chills. "Da Bomba" is their nod to their latin roots, while "Chinatown" is essentially straight-up New Orleans jazz. And don't miss Nat's solo track, "The Warrior Comes Out To Play." Overall, this is probably my favorite album out of the past ten years. Enjoy.
