This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Going through my collection, I found this set was THE most worn out of ALL the MF recordings I had (Chameleon, MF2, etc) which says alot about the quality of the recording, the music selection and my preference for live vs studio.
I was really excited to learn this was coming out on CD so I could finally hear a clean version. After waiting an extra couple of weeks beyond the initial promised shipping date, then another 2 weeks of being away from home, I finally got my hands on it yesterday. Whoohooo! It played all day yesterday in my office and on the way home from work.
I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews, that this is a recording for the ages and would even suggest that, from a layman's point of view, if you have room for 1 MF album, this is the one. He gives Teo Macera credit for recording it ON THE STREET IN A MOBILE VAN, for cryin' out loud, so the quality of the sound is even more amazing. This was no over-miked, multi-take recording with the applause superimposed, but a "you are there" snapshot of a master at work with one of the tightest and most talented bands he ever had backing him up.
I was fortunate to go to the tribute concert held after his death last year in St Louis where alumni from his band rotated through (soon to be on DVD- don't miss that one!). Many of the musicians on this album were there and THAT will be one I watch for.
In life, all we ultimately leave behind is our legacy and he left one of love, teaching and incredible but humble talent.
RIP Maynard, they broke the mold after they made you.

I've had the original record since it came out when I was in high school.
Maynard and his band were a huge influence on my friends and me. Several
of my classmates went on to be professional horn players. For me, Maynard
helped spark a lifelong appreciation of jazz and particulary big bands.
Sidenote: What became of Bruce Johnston? I think his bari solos on this
recording are some of my favorites of all time.

Here great notebook of the music she enjoyed immensely so we can as well.
Especially fond of harpsichord music, this has marvelous selection of that, but fond of Rondeau in B-flat major. Minuet in G major is one of my favorites. New to me are the Arias, especially "Bist du bei mir" and ""Ich habe genug". If you're not conversant in German, do go on the website the liner notes provides and get the translation in English for these are marvelous testimonies of their faith in words and song.

Strange pairing, but well worth having.......2007-07-09
M.F. Horn 2 really turned the corner for Maynard's wider appeal to a younger 1970s-era audience. He used much of this material in concert appearances for years to come. As someone who attended many of those concerts, I can confirm that "Give It One" is an exciting way to open a concert, and the track belongs on every MF playlist. "Country Road," "Theme from Shaft," and "Spinning Wheel" became popular arrangements for high school and college jazz ensembles with high aspirations and a desire to pay homage to MF. Some reviewers have given high praise to the album's version of "Hey Jude," but personally, I never cared much for this tune, even for the Beatles' original version. The real magic of Maynard's rendition can only be duplicated in concert, where the whole trumpet section would move out into the audience and scream the repeated chorus like Maynard clones in the midst of the frenzied crowd.
And now for something completely different: The Ballad Style. Many jazz artists of that era did "easy listening" albums in a attempt to broaden their audience and sell more records. Fortunately, Maynard was among those who could flourish in this setting as well. Some things are a bit over the top (such as the intro to the opening track "Born Free"), but Maynard fans may find this endearing even if the uninitiated find it tasteless. But the man was capable of great beauty as well. Check out "If He Walked Into My Life," "The Impossible Dream," "As Long As He Needs Me," "Somewhere," and "Maria." (Essentially the same arrangement of "Maria," written for big band instead of orchestra, appears on the Two Big Bands CD. I prefer that recording of this tune.) There's even a pretty respectable arrangement of the James Bond theme "You Only Live Twice." I must admit, however, that it seems odd, even humorous, to contemplate Maynard playing tunes with names like "Hushabye Mountain" and "The Sound of Silence." Think about it.
For those who like variety in their Maynard assortment, this CD is a good deal.

But unlike some other reviewers, I would suggest that the "Ballad Style" half of the CD is, in some ways, more interesting than MF2. Ferguson rarely recorded with strings and it's nice to hear him in a large ensemble context. While the MF Horn albums stayed in print well into the 80s, the Ballad Style album apparently came and went fairly quickly and may represent previously unheard material even to those who followed Maynard closely. That being said, with the exception of the two fairly good West Side Story cuts (which he also recorded on other albums with different arrangements), the song selection is tepid late-60's pop or show tunes and Maynard does not seem terribly comfortable with the material or the orchestrations. But it can be very interesting and instructive to hear how a performer deals with adversity and those with a deep interest in Maynard should definitely hear these tracks, at least once.
The sound quality of MF2 is pretty good, and although I don't know how it compares with the Wounded Bird CD of the same material, it's on par with the vinyl versions in my closet. On the other hand, the sound quality of the "Ballad Style" cuts is cloudy, although it's hard to know whether that is because of the quality of the original recordings (probable), the condition of the master tapes (that probably sat untouched for 35 years), or the decisions of the mastering engineer (unlikely).
A comment was made about a mastering problem with a few seconds cut off the beginning of "Country Road". It's an amorphous improvised electric piano introduction and unless you are intimately familiar with the cut as it was originally released, you probably won't notice the missing seconds.

French Baroque Performed by The Absolute Master of the Viola Da Gamba.......2005-10-09
The double album primarily contains solos or duets for viola da gamba by Marais and Sainte-Colombe but has pieces by other contemporaries such as Lully. This album is a great sample of the variety of works and composers of the unique French Baroque tradition that continued to use the viola while other musical styles in Europe had virtually abandoned it for the cello. The viola da gamba has a lot more range, depth, and resonance than the cello and so the music is moodier and more contemplative than cello works such as Bach's magnificent cello suites. Solo music for viola from the French Baroque also allows freer interpretation than conventional compositions for orchestra or other chamber pieces. The jewel in this album is Marais' haunting but divine Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve in which the dynamics of the violas and violins are truly a spiritual voyage into one's soul; at points serenely docile to demonically ferocious as if phantasms both luring and forbidding the listener to follow. The intricate complexity and resonance of this exquisite piece makes it one of the most spiritually moving Baroque sonet variations I have ever heard and it's one of my personal favorites. Both Marais and Sainte-Colombe were probably the pinnacle of achievement in terms of expressive techniques for the viola da gamba during the French Baroque period while later contemporaries such as Forqueray and Couperin became more formulaic although no less accomplished.
Jordi Savall has many priceless performances apart from this soundtrack and he is really the only competent artist for both viola da gamba specifically and primarily all French Baroque interpretations. There are no other viola players who can even compare to Savall as they really sound as little else than amateurs in comparison to his applied skills and passion of playing. I strongly recommend for anyone looking for music for viola da gamba or really any French Baroque to buy Savall/Le Concert Des Nations' performances exclusively as there's simply nothing else to look for or find that's in his caliber. Apart from a few other performnances by groups such as Les Arts Florissants, I guarantee you that the performances of all others in this style will rise to no further than being mediocre at best such as Harncourt or even Koopman who often plays with Savall. Most other viola performers quickly descend to atrocious standards in comparison to those of Savall. Even though Savall's recordings tend to be on the more expensive side, he's worth every penny take my word for it: you won't regret it! What you will regret is having bought a mediocre viola peformance after you hear Savall's as the differences will be very significant.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Not only were we seduced by the jazz virtuosity demonstrated on the recognizable pop covers here (Mac. Park and Eli's Comin)but the screaming brass intensity and jazz excitement demonstrated on the other original pieces (L-Dopa)rivaled the hormonal satisfaction many had only experienced from progressive rock heroes of the day. The fact that this sound was produced with instrumentation many of us could only struggle with in school music programs sealed the deal.
The unexpected commercial success of this groove allowed the veteran Ferguson to continue with number of successive recordings on Columbia, culminating with a top 40 hit with the cover of the "Rocky" theme, Gonna Fly Now. At that point, the marketing people at Columbia Records got all the wrong signals and helped to run the trumpet virtuoso's reputation into the ground with a series of forgettable efforts based on jazz/disco/pop covers of well known themes. His image in the jazz world never fully recovered; his early work with Stan Kenton and his own substantive recordings of the 50s and early 60s were almost totally forgotten by critics and purists.
Fortunately, Maynard's creativity, personality and loyal fan base rebounded with him on other labels, most notably Concord Records through the 90's with a number of hard bop 'small' big band recordings that yielded steady concert bookings through the end of his life.
Ferguson's early associations with other jazz greats encouraged many fans with curiosity to experience most of the post-swing era mainstream jazz world and, to a considerable extent for this 'student musician' demographic, unravelled what rock and roll had done to popular musical taste.
Quite a contribution to the American art form, I'd say; and from a Canadian, no less.

I've been looking for this album on CD for years. On hearing the news I pulled out some of my old albums for a listen. MF Horn has always been a real favorite. I've about worn it out. Today I thought I'd check again and it's available! I will be buying it. So should you.
It has a mood to it that always leaves me feeling real good. The musicianship is great across the board. The various pieces all work together. There's no need to explain the particulars of each song. This is simply a great, great recording. Get this, get it now.
I just hope CDs don't wear out because I'll be playing this one a lot.

Glad They Were Found ! It's Not Enough !.......2007-03-15
Unfortunately...I did not appreciate their music "back in the day."
I had many opportunites to see them,living in NYC in the late 70's - late 80's. Soooo glad they found these lost mixes! I repent!
A MUST OWN for anyone that appreciates raw, classic, gritty rock + roll.
This collection should be held in the highest regard,along with the other classics like The Stones, Yardbirds, The Seeds, The Kinks, + The Ramones.
Johnny Thunder's guitar solo + vocals on It's Not Enough...WOW!!! Reminds me of The Stones, Child of the Moon, but BETTER! He really "goes out" + gives his all. GREAT piece of Rock + Roll with JT's emotions on his sleeve! It's bone chilling!
Chinese Rocks, Born to Lose, + Do You Love Me are rare treats for those who love the "old sound rock + roll."
These classics can NEVER be duplicated, + are so impotant for anyone who appreciates only the finest !

L.A.M.F.--It's Not Enough!.......2007-03-01
What makes the Heartbreakers great is simplicity. They reduced twenty years of rock and pop and rhythm and blues into 3 minute rave-ups that always leave the listener wanting more. Johnny's guitar-slinging rings true, always teetering on the edge of collapse: it's chaotic and exhilarating. Blistering leads, solos that sound like a strangling cat, chugging rhythms like the subway trains roaring beneath the city streets.
Songs like "Get Off the Phone," "Going Steady," "Baby Talk," and "Let Go" are trashy rock'n'roll rave-ups, with all the requisite elements: catchy choruses, sleazy good-time lyrics (the ones that make sense, anyway; Johnny weren't no English perfessor), driving drums, and immediate gratification. A song like "One Track Mind" is a beautiful thing, all irresistible chorus and air-guitar glory. "It's Not Enough": is a reflective ballad-sorta thing, with Johnny lamenting how "You can give me this/You can give me that" but it's not enough. Man it's good! "Pirate Love" exists only for the dual-guitar solo that rivals anything the Dolls ever laid down.
Then there are the classics, the signature tunes that no Johnny Thunders performance was complete without: "Born to Lose," (or, alternately "Born Too Loose") which opens the album: with some out-of-tune guitar whines, and the lyrics reveals again just what a poet of the streets Johnny was: "Nothin' to do/Oh nothin' to say/Only one thing that I want/It's the only way/I said hit it!/Baby I was born to lose."
"Chinese Rocks" is perhaps Thunders' most famous song even though it was written by fellow junkster Dee Dee Ramone. Anyone unsure as to what the song refers can be sure, it ain't nothing like Pop Rocks.

These songs depict the downside of downtown and how the jungle could eat you alive. Johnny's status as a stylish, decadent loser who strutted those mean streets is legendary. As Wayne Kramer (MC5) said of Johnny: "He could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory."
The Heartbreakers weren't really a punk band, even though they rounded out the legendary Anarchy tour of the UK in late '76 with a couple bands you mighta heard of, the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Rumor has it--actually, it's more than rumor, it's fact--that the Heartbreakers introduced heroin to the much younger and more naive UK punks, and Nancy Spungen went looking for Jerry Nolan and followed them there. You know what happened after that.
The band was never able to secure a record deal with an American label due to their, uh, extracurricular activities, so eventually they broke up. Johnny would put out a decidedly mixed solo album a year later ("So Alone") and continue to travel the world as a performer. Shows were plagued by his drug use, his attitude, his poor guitar-playing. I never got to see him perform, and odds are that if I had, I'd've seen a shambles of a set. Although a friend saw him in the mid-80s and remembers the acoustic set Johnny did as particularly entertaining. In April of 1991 Johnny Thunders was hauled out of a grimy New Orleans hotel, his lifeless body doubled over from the effects of countless drugs. It's not enough, is it, Johnny? No, I guess it never is.
Well, all that don't matter. What does matter is that if you care about real rock'n'roll you need this album. It rocks like nothing else I know, but fits kinda between the Stones and the Replacements (whose "Johnny's Gonna Die" is an ode to Thunders), G'n'R, Hanoi Rocks, very early Crue and other hard rock of the '80s. Practically every hard-rock/glam/metal guitarist that tosses a mane of out-of-control hair with a sneer and screech copped it from Johnny (who of course copped it from Keith Richards, let's be honest here). Johnny deserves to be remembered for his single-minded rock tunes, his dedication to the rock'n'roll lifestyle, and also for one of the coolest rock "nom de guerres" ever--I mean, "Johnny Thunders" how cool is that?! Thanks Johnny Rock on RIP!

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
