Wonderful Stuff.......2006-06-16

It will happen.

We will see an revival of the "new age" music created in this era. We will enjoy again the sheer musicality and creativity bespoken by groups like Special EFX.

This collections is memorable for quite a few reasons, but my favorite cut remains the very first Special EFX song I ever heard, "Hands of the Healer." It starts out like space music, establishing an ethereal realm for almost 90 seconds, and then, suddenly, strikes two quick, bright chords which, inexplicably, drop in pitch. From this point on, the listener is slightly off balance, not quite sure what to expect. And the "tune" that follows this passage is memorable and irresistable.

It will happen - this music will enter a classic, timeless place which will live long beyond the immediate.

Great Jazz Fusion/Smooth Jazz/Great Sound Quality Too!.......2005-10-18

This like most of the discs in the GRP Digital Masters series is a very well produced cd. The sound quality for a 1993 disc is very good. This is a great selection of the best of Special Efx and anyone who likes smooth jazz/fusion aka light entertainment is in for a real treat here. Recommended.

Great collection. A classic........1998-08-24

Easily one of my favorite albums, with an infectious mix of jazz fusion, latin, and even some calypso thrown in for good measure. I love the trademark blend of Chieli Minucci's creative acoustic and electric guitar with George Jinda's diverse rhythms and percussion instruments. This album contains a cherry-picked selection from the Peace of the World, Double Feature, Global Village, Mystique, Just Like Magic, Slice of Life, Modern Manners, and Confidential albums. My personal favorites are Jazz Lambada, Uptown East, Daybreak, Udu Voodoo, and My Place in the Sun (recorded from 1985 - 1993). It's 73 minutes of heaven. The music of Special EFX has broad appeal; try playing it at a social event and see for yourself.

Consistent.......2004-01-28

I have seen Special EFX perform a couple of times @ Chicago in the early 1990's. Really enjoyed their music. Now, almost a decade later, Chielli Minucci continues to hold the group together especially since the departure of fellow bandmate George Jinda (who left the band on health grounds). This album is really good with some bouncy numbers. The key to this album is its consistency, most of the songs make enjoyable listening especially if you are driving. As another listener had written, I would love to see a full time collaboration between Chuck Loeb & Minucci in the future.

Mixed Bag.......2003-08-18

Let me begin by saying that Chieli Minucci is one of my favorite guitarists. He's not afraid to take chances & try new directions. A good example is track 8 - "Fantasia Blue". Chieli melds guitar, organ & synthesizer for a haunting sound unlike anything I've ever heard in smooth jazz. Track 5 - "On the Sly", is another one I keep going back to. This is a duet with fellow guitarist Chuck Loeb. The tune is very catchy (ingrained in my mind) and the playing of both guitarists is impeccable. I would love to hear Chieli & Chuck collaborate on an entire project like Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour did a few years ago. There are 2 or 3 soft tracks that could have easily been omitted, but overall this is well worth adding to your smooth jazz collection.

One of my favorite album.......2003-01-15

Certainly one of the best Smoothjazz albums of my collection. The guitar of Chieli Minucci is a great pleasure, the melodies and the agreements of certain tracks like "Cruise Control", "Everyone's star" or "Fantasia Blue" are really good. To listen imperatively. Continue like that Mr Minucci.

Soulful, Jazzy and Graceful ...........2002-03-27

One of the best Jazz Albums that I had for my personal collection besides 'Tim May' and 'The Best of Foreplay', the electric guitar, the piano, the saxaphone and the original composition are simply too beautiful to experience!

Particularly like the single, 'Stay A While' plays the similar rhythm like 'SleepWalk'. Other tracks were also smashing .... 'Everyone's A Star', 'Cruise Control', 'Butterfly' , 'Fantasia Blue'.

Definately worth as part of the Smooth Jazz Collection!

Special EFX's Best.......2005-03-16

This CD absolutely needs to be re-released. It is the best CD that Special Efx put out. Many albums have 3-4 great songs at the beginning of the CD and then peter out after that -- not this CD.

Double Feature starts with a smooth opener "The Lady and The Sea," then picks up the intensity some with the intricate "Jamaica, Jamaica" (with lots of wooden blocks from George Jinda), and continues with some songs featuring vocals (smooth scat singing) from Bemshi and others.

My favorite song is the smokey, hazy "Mirrors" with some of Chieli's best, intricate guitar playing. "Search For a Rainbow" could have come from the previous "Mystique" CD, a slow-building burner from Jinda, with Cheili's e-bow echo guitar floating above.

Double Feature then saves two of it's strongest cuts for the last part of the CD. "Thy Kingdom Come" and "Northern Lights" are both high intensity guitar-fests, with layers of acoustic, classical and electric guitars. Cheili does not cut either song short, but lets them both build and progress, taking the listener higher and higher before slowly returning them softly to earth.

Only "Oasis," the last cut, is an optional listen, with some quirky, statcatto guitar and percussion that doesn't quite seem to finish the CD smoothly. But it doesn't detract from the sheer brilliance and musicianship of the rest of this great CD.

It is absolutely Special Efx's best!

Should have kept up the momentum!.......2004-11-09

This album starts out great! I really was enjoying it- until I got past the 4th song. Thereafter, it starts losing it's energy, as if they came out with a few great songs but not enough for an entire album, so they added what sounds like filler material. Much of the remainder consists of boring, repetitive, simple little melodies that sound like supermarket background music. What a shame- if the whole album could have reflected the effort that seems to have been put forth from the beginning, I would have rated it a knockout 5 stars.

Where are the reviewers?.......2004-02-12

Special EFX really consisted of just two individuals by the names of Chielli Minnuchi & George Jinda. Unfortunately George Jinda has passed away, so he had nothing to do with this album. This is a very good album, but it's not worthy of five stars. And track number six "Mi Amore" absolutely does not belong on this album! Too bad Mr. Chielli Minnuchi didn't include his cover of a Steely Dan hit that I've been wanting to hear, instead.

Their best effort to date........2003-10-06

While the title of this CD is party, I don't think you can dance to these tracks, therefore, the title may be a misnomer. Up tempo may be more accurate for the compositions on this CD. Regardless of its name, I'd have to say this CD is the best effort to date from Special EFX. All the songs are pretty much fast tempo and pleasant, indeed. This is great riding music for your vehicle, and sounds excellent on a good home system. The recording quality is grade A, and you need a system which can accurately play the lower bass notes as the bass on this CD goes into the lower octaves of the bass instrument. Those of you who have systems with clean, accurate bass will appreciate the songs on this effort. Also, the mid and hi freqencies on this CD are smooth and clean showing considerable effort going into the recording quality itself. This CD feature real drums, guitars, piano and horn section. Its a must purchase for any smooth jazz fan.

I own several CD's from Special EFX. This may be the best one that I have heard. Seduction is my absolute favorite song from them. It received a good deal of airplay when this CD was new. Bodybeat is also a superb song. The rest of the CD is pretty good,but these two standout! Buy it and you won't be sorry!

Special EFX's 1999 disc, "Masterpiece," is a must have for smooth jazz fans. Chieli Minucci, even with limited writing contributions from percussionist George Jinda (who is unable to perform due to illness) brings the group's best aspects to the forefront.

In this writer's opinion, any doubts to whether smooth jazz can be interesting and innovative are quelled with the first two tracks, the title track and "Speak To Me." The former is very 1999, with its elecrtonica-influenced percussive flourish, while the latter is elegantly timeless with an atmospheric trumpet in the background, layered synthesizers, and neo-traditional percussion. Both songs feature Minucci's distinctive guitar solos, which engage the listener without distracting from the total compostion.

There's little, if anything to dislike about this album. All the tracks are expertly composed and performed, especially the standout tracks, the futuristic and funky "Close Encounters" and the sublime "Bella," which is as beautiful as its title, with Minucci's goregeous solo work with nylon-string guitar.

In my mind, Special EFX has a checkered history. They're an enigma to me. But hearing "Bella" is a joyous experience. How many groups can come together like that, in a marvelous shared experience? That one song says, "stop and listen." This may be an important moment. This may be a Special EFX.

Great Soft Jazz.......2000-07-11

I heard the songs 'bella' and 'miami' from internet radio for the first time All album song are very impressed on my memory and hope to listen again. Soft guitar and sax rhythm make me comfortable.

I was hesitate to buy this album on this store. Because only one track is displayed. but I buy it anyway because I can't find any single album of 'Masterpiece'. Yes. I'm right. this store database was wrong.

Finally, I'd recommand buy this album.
