Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04
FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.
Very Functional.......2006-03-19

As cliché as it sounds, music does have the ability to bring people of various background and ethnicities together. Think not? Witness Connected, the debut album from the Foreign Exchange. North Carolina-raised MC Phonte, one-third of Little Brother, and Dutch producer Nicolay formed the duo and crafted the ethereally lush hip-hop album without ever meeting face-to-face. Using the marvels of modern technology, the group traded verses and tracks over the Internet. The result is anything but mechanical. Nicolay crafts soulful, intricate backdrops that draw comparisons to producers Pete Rock and Kanye West. On the appropriately titled "Nic's Groove," the producer crafts a pitch-perfect midtempo track over which Phonte and Little Brother cohort Big Pooh trade verses. Phonte also enlists a host of upcoming artists to guest on the set. The group's MC teams with newcomer Median on the emotional "Be Alright." While Median holds his own, Phonte is in full command with a personal lyric about dealing with the ups and downs of everyday life. Meanwhile, "Sincere," which features R&B songstress YahZarah, will have listeners falling in love with hip-hop and each other all over again. Connected is a prime example of the power of good music uniting different worlds. Maybe our elected officials could take a page out of the book of the Foreign Exchange. --Lincoln SmithAlbum Description
The Foreign Exchange first "met" in mid-2002, when Phonte (who resides in North Carolina and is also a member of the underground rap trio Little Brother), heard some of Nicolay's music online and asked to rhyme over one of his tracks. When Big Pooh of Little Brother, lent his vocals to the track, the song became "Light It Up," and was featured as a B-side single for the group's acclaimed 2003 effort, The Listening. "Nic was sending me some of the most beautiful stuff I'd ever heard in my life," Phonte says emphatically. "They inspired me so much that I just had to do something over them." The end result is Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul. While Phonte serves as the duo's main vocalist, the group is quick to point out that Connected is not a "Phonte solo album," and is instead an ensemble record with Nicolay and Phonte acting as the project's conductors. With guest shots from up and comers Critically Acclaimed on the churchy, organ-driven "Hustle, Hustle," and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah contemplating lost love over the melancholy vocal harmonies of "Sincere," Connected finds Nicolay and his multi-talented counterpart uniting artists from different genres under a united theme of good music.

Product Description
A collection of r&b, soul, jazz, pop, world and gospel songs by Berklee College of Music students and staff to raise awareness of the plight of women and children affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. We Are All Connected is the culmination of a collaborative effort engaging many members of the Berklee community. A delegation of Boston women traveled to the Sudan with Mercy Corps where the group heard firsthand accounts of the violence that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions to camps. These stories inspired the group to take action to produce a full-length CD. Guest Artists Include: Meshell Ndegeocello, Walter Beasley and Vinnie ColaiutaCustomer Reviews:

Kudos to Berklee College of Music, the leadership of Roger Brown, and the inspiration of Linda Mason ... We Are All Connected is an incredible collection of music to raise awareness in support of those who are suffering in Darfur.

Music for my ears and soul for my heart.......2006-11-20
Well then, I actually listened to it. It's great. I mean, really great. I know Berklee is a very reputable music school so I figured it would be good, but I can honestly say I was really moved by the music. I was psyched that not only had I helped the women of Darfur by buying the CD but I was also proud to be supporting Berklee students and faculty.
As a result of the music being so good, I am going to give this CD to several people on my holiday list this year. Of course it's also nice to give gifts just for the humanitarian aspect, so it's great to know that with this CD I'll have both bases covered.
We Are All Connected.......2006-11-18
Hearing the recordings of women and children in internally displaced person camps in Darfur incorporated into the compositions of Berklee's music community reinvigorates those connections, and reminds us that we do have a voice, no matter where we live. And knowing that the proceeds from the CD benefit Mercy Corps' Darfur programs makes this an easy purchase to make. I'm sending it to everyone on my Christmas list.

The story has been told numerous times and is refreshing each time it is told again. Phonte of Little Brother (North Carolina) met producer Nicolay online at Okayplayer.com. Through countless messageboard correspondences and instant messages (never meeting in person), Phonte and Nicolay as The Foreign Exchange created the critically acclaimed album, Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul. After having a #1 CMJ hip-hop charting album, stellar reviews (XXL, The Source, Billboard, and many others), and MTV You Hear It First feature, and a video for the single "Sincere" on VH1 Soul, the Foreign Exchange give their fans one more treat. Now available on CD is the Connected Instrumentals. After a half decade's absence and a change in lead singers to Jacci McGhee, the Family Stand returned in early 1998 with Connected. Less rock-oriented than 1992's Moon in Scorpio, the album is still more daring than many other recent retro-soul discs; shimmering string sections and guitars are put in service not only of seduction numbers like "Keepin' You Satisfied," with its group vocal interplay and sly nod to "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" but also a tough-minded remembrance of Tupac Shakur on "What Must I Do Now?" --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Does it get any better? I think not........2006-01-29
Many years later this album is still refreshing!.......2004-07-27
1. Keepin' You Satisfied - Sounds like a true Soul song of the 70's. Ms. McGhee's voice makes the song.
2. Butter - Makes you think you are listening to Sly and the Family Stone. Excellent vocals, guitar, bass. One of my favorites.
3. When Heaven Calls - Very nice. Could easily be mistaken for a Chaka Khan song.
4. Connected - Ms. McGhee once again turns out a sultry impassioned plea. Another one of my favorites.
5. It Should've Been Me (That Loved You) - Wonderful. Stevie would be proud.
6. What Must I Do Now? - The best song lyrically with their uncompromising social commentary. Most folks have to listen to these songs several times to get the Tupac references and meaning.
7. You Don't Have to Worry - The ONLY song that got any airplay. And that was miniscule! More social commentary.
8. Fienin - stirs up passion and the lyrics are dangerous.
9. You're Mine - Has a little Mid-tempo Middle Eastern feel to it. Gets catchy after several listens.
10. Don't Ask Why - Decent lyrics and melody.
11. More and More - Like an earlier reviewer, reminds me of Rufus and Chaka Khan.
12. What Must I Do Now? (Reprise) - Mostly intrumental version of this song.
The Most Underrated R&B/Soul Album Of 1998, Hands Down.......2002-08-19
That brings us to this finely crafted album by the NY-based Family Stand. Connected serves as a painful example of how far the music industry has gone off the deep end in terms of not promoting legitimate musical talent on a more consistent basis, especially when the timing couldn't have been more perfect for this particular group. Compared to other albums in its genre that were released the very same year, NONE of them in my honest opinion could truly compete with Connected in terms of overall content. There is an abundance of solid, at-times brilliant, songwriting, live instrumentation (a band laying out killer grooves on all but ONE track), and well-honed singing chops found here which easily places it a notch or two above its peers. Only the one track in question (You Don't Have To Worry) has any hint of the kind of electronic programming that would normally be found on more mainstream releases. Fortunately, it was wisely done in a manner so as to not deviate from the song's main intent of telling an emotional story of racism and single parenting in today's society.
It's quite unfortunate to find Connected out of print now, but there should be some copies lying around in used cd bins if one knows where to look. Call it "retro" or "dated" or whatever (I'm 21 so that really says a lot about what I find acceptable in music these days), I sincerely believe that good music is good music no matter what way, shape, or form it is done in. And Connected remains an album loaded with GOOD MUSIC. What more is there to say???
Highlights:
When Heaven Calls (shades of the Isley Brothers, circa early to mid-70's)
Title track (wonderfully orchestrated soul number; goes to prove the old school sounds of yesteryear will never truly die)
It Should've Been Me That Loved You (eat your heart out, Stevie!)
What Must I Do Now? (two-part song that remains the album's centerpiece; check out the latter half devoted to the late Tupac Shakur)
You Don't Have To Worry (eat your heart out, Sly!)
Fienin' (should've gotten some radio play at the time because it seems funk like this just isn't done anymore; vocalist Jacci McGhee really turns it out on this cut)
More and More (sexy, late-night soul number that probably would've made even Rufus & Chaka Khan take notice)
U Don't Have to Worry..this is a great CD.......2001-11-25
