What's Goin' On? Now I'm Only 15 Years Behind the Times!.......2007-01-05

As you can see from some of my other reviews in here, my musical tastes are mired 30-40 years in the past. Recently I jumped ahead to only 15 years behind the times at an unlikely place--the steps of Sacre Cour on Montmartre in Paris. There on a unseasonably mild November Sunday afternoon, I listened to a Parisian troubador strum his guitar and sing Beatles songs and American folk tunes (Simon and Garfunkel). I started singing along and he invited me down to sing with him. First we did "Help!", on which we did our best to reproduce the Beatles echo singing style. After "Help!" he started a song that I didn't recognize, so I sat back down on the concrete steps. "25 years and my life is still..."--I listened and enjoyed, and sang along with the "hey, hey, hey, what's goin' on!" chorus. Later on he invited me back for "California Dreaming" (another echo song), but that's another story.

Back in the US, I was determined to find out who did "What's Goin' On", which I was sure had to be the name of the song. I Googled and searched lyrics sites--finding a lot of performers who had covered Marvin Gaye's classic tune. Finally on page 3 of one search or another, I found a reference to "4 Non Blondes" and a song called "What's Up". I read the lyrics and thought, "This might be it." I found 4 Non Blondes on You Tube and listened (and watched) Linda Perry sing the song. I knew I'd found the song. I also learned that the title of the song resulted from the ubiquitous presence of Marvin Gaye's song, and the need for 4 Non Blondes to be different. I also learned was that Linda Perry did a lot better with the song than my Parisian friend, and I understood why it was a big hit that would be remembered in Paris 15 years later.

Getting on with the story, I asked for 4 Non Blondes' CD "Bigger, Faster, Better, More" for Christmas. Of all people, my 77-year old father found it for me. Sure enough, my new favorite song was there, along with a several other songs featuring Linda Perry's unique vocal style--"Train", "Pleasantly Blue", "Morphine and Chocolate" and "Spaceman" being my favorites. I love the way she can seemingly sing in two octaves at once. "Morphine and Chocolate" has to be the theme song for a drug movie somewhere. Mostly rockers, the 4 Non Blondes also blend in some blues and folk. Linda's singing seems a little strident at time, but you can never accuse of her of holding anything back. I've read comparisons of Perry's singing style to that of Robert Plant--they seem relevant. Both have great range of styles, pitch and that relentless emotion.

poor choice for second single.......2006-11-13

A very underrated record. Following up 'What's Up?" with "Spaceman" was a bad decision. The followup singles should have been "Calling all the people" and "Drifting." If you've always liked "What's Up?" but never heard the whole album, it's worth having.

Interesting, but plenty of filler........2006-09-08

I'll give credit to Linda Perry for having a captivating voice(although she does remind me a lot of Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde), and "What's Up", "Drifting", and "Spaceman" are ballads that I never get tired of. Unfortunately, the rest of the album never really grew on me, and "Dear Mr. President" is the perfect example of a good instrumental song ruined by cliched lyrics. Basically, it's the sound of a band trying to make a statement without having anything to say.

For those of you that liked their one hit, I say try to borrow this before you buy it, and if you hated their one hit, you still might try giving this one a chance because half of the songs follow the same formula as "What's Up" and the other half sound like a different band altogether.

I just heard the song "What's Up!!" on the radio. I had to have it therefore I went directly to Amazon and found the Album. I loved it. All the songs were great and it's a shame that they are no longer together. I listen to this album everyday at work and never get tired of it.

For anyone who enjoys the irreverent humor of South Park, there's plenty of it on this soundtrack. Stan, Kenny, Kyle, Eric, Sharon, Sheila, Terrance... all step up to the mic and deliver in a way the Chipmunks (their obvious musical influence) would never dare. The use of certain four- and five-letter words make this a less-than-appropriate gift for young 'uns, lest you be misled by the characters' cartoon status. Musically, it's mostly swooning cartoon music capped by the incessant ranting of the main characters. By the time you get to Michael McDonald, you may wonder what this "sophisticated" adult-contemporary singer is doing among the children of South Park and Saddam Hussein. Even Isaac Hayes performs not as a late-night Lothario but as his South Park character, Chef. His track is one of the eight that don't appear in the film but have been added to flesh things out. Weirdest of all: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush performing a straight rendition of "O Canada." Huh? --Rob O'Connor

As far as animated soundtracks go, this is by far, one of the best. Every song that appears in the movie actually appears on the soundtracks. You don't always get that and for once we do. Way to Go!!!!

Great...for the most part.......2006-02-19

Even though I'm not sure I'd call the movie one of my favorites, I've seen "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" more times than I'd care to admit. The film's soundtrack is the reason why.

The songs that are in the movie proper are very nicely done. They manage to further the plot and develop characters and things like that, but they also meet their most important goal: they're hilarious. When I heard the soundtrack for the first time, it brought me to tears of laughter; even now, little details like the "Wooooo!" by the spontaneous chorus line in "Kyle's Mom's A B**ch" bring a smile to my face.

The interpretations are a mixed bag - and the rap ones are downright terrible - but they're not why you're interested in the CD. Even so, the new versions of "I Swear It (I Can Change)" and "What Would Brian Boitano Do? Pt. II," are very nicely done, and the cover of "O Canada" is so good that I still don't know why it wasn't anywhere in the film.

I'm sure it's mentioned in other reviews, but the soundtrack isn't exact. There are a few short songs missing. "Hell Isn't Good" is gone, as are the various verses of Stan's "There's The Girl That I Like." "Eyes Of A Child" has been moved; it was in the credits in the film, and doesn't really belong in the middle of the character section of the soundtrack where it was placed. Those are minor quibbles, though - everything that matters is here.

As long as you're not offended by semi-frequent swearing and some raunchy lyrics, this soundtrack is a joy to listen to.

It should come as no surprise that it took sex, disease and death to shake the Rolling Stones out of their latest creative dry spell. Leading up to the making of A Bigger Bang, produced by Don Was, Mick Jagger endured a very public break-up with Jerry Hall, Charlie Watts battled throat cancer, and Ron Wood was devastated by the news of his ex-wife's suicide. Out of their collective struggles, the members of the venerable British rock band managed to piece together some of their best work in nearly two decades. It's a slick, slightly uneven affair bounding from raunchy blues to MOR rock songs that sound suspiciously like they were left over from the Alfie soundtrack, yes, but it also sounds vital at every turn. Even though they don't really need to, the jet-set vagabond rockers plunge into hot-button politics ("Sweet Neo Con"), rummage through their dirty laundry ("Oh No, Not You Again") and dip cautious toes back into ridicule-tempting "Miss You"-style funk ("Rain Fall Down"), without making any major missteps unless you count the ewwwww-factor of a 61-year-old Keith Richards singing "Come on honey, bare your breasts and make me feel at home" on "This Place Is Empty." --Aidin Vaziri

WELCOME BACK, STONES!.......2007-07-11

A Bigger Bang released in 2005 is one of the stronger albums the Stones have ever released. It is one that I continually go back to time and time again unlike anything they have done since 83's Undercover. What makes it so good? Well, for starters the Stones are not interested in chasing the latest musical trends on this release. It is straight ahead simple rock and roll-what we always have loved about the Rolling Stones. Secondly the band is playing like they WANT to play again. By that I mean there is a fire there that has been missing, an intensity that can make even an average song sound that much better. Perhaps the quality of the material reinvigorated them or perhaps it was simply the fact that on this release they used very little outside help and play all the instruments and sing all of the vocals themselves. Not too many cooks in the kitchen, if you know what I mean. It's not a perfect record, but a very very good one and it feels good to say that along with the 4 classics, Aftermath, Some Girls, Tattoo You and now A Bigger Bang can be seen as the core of this band's monumental musical legacy.

1. Rough Justice- kicks things off and it is a great rocker and album opener. Woody's slide work is phenomenal. A great way to open an album and this track tells you right from the start that the Stones as we know them are back.

2. Let Me Down Slow- A popier rock song with a catchy swinging beat. One of the better songs on the album and great lyrics by Jagger who appears to be the one most responsible for the song.

3. It Won't Take Long- This one opens with a trademark Richards riff, albeit a bit pedestrian. The Stones, however, play it with a passion that helps make it better than just filler.

4. Rain Fall Down- A sly funky tune reminiscent of Miss You but not as good. The song works, however, and is a welcome addition to their catalogue.

5. Streets of Love- This is one of 2 mistakes on the album. A slow ballad that weighs in on the sappy side. The Stones have done this before and much better. See Out Of Tears from Voodoo Lounge and Memory Motel from Black and Blue.

6. Back of My Hand- Ahh, ok we're back. A slow blues tune. Engaging guitar work throughout the song and you'll find yourself singing along with this one. It is the kind of song that the Stones, in the past decade or so, have saved for b-sides. I am glad they decide here to include it on an album. VERY welcome indeed.

7. She Saw Me Coming- This is one of my favorite songs on the album and maybe in past years this would have made an excellent single. The sense of humor is back in the lyrics and it also contains a nice riff to chug it along.

8. Biggest Mistake- A Jagger tune without a doubt, very similar to his solo material of late. It's not a bad song by any means but neither is it above average. It sounds good while it's playing but you won't miss it once it's over.

9. This Place is Empty- The first of 2 Richards sung songs. This one is a barroom styled ballad and a great one at that.

10. Oh No Not You Again- The Stones as we know and love them, great riffs and guitars harkening back to the Some Girls days. Yes, it IS them again and we are happy to have you back! Easily one of the better songs on this release.

11. Dangerous Beauty- Another rocker that seems as though it is filler, but it is better than that. I think this one will be one of those 'overlooked gems' because of it's placement so deep into the release. The solo sounds as it were done by BB King.

12. Laugh I Nearly Died- A slow rocker in which Jagger sings like he hasn't in a long time. Perhaps his best vocal performance since Gimme Shelter. He steals this one away and the breakdown at the end is priceless. Amazing creation!

13. Sweet Neo-Con- Ahh, mistake number 2. Many people have said that this is their favorite song on the album but I have to believe that is due to the political nature of the song. Judging it just as a song it isn't bad but it just never really goes anywhere. Would have made a nice b-side or bonus track.

14. Look what the Cat Dragged In- This is one of my favorite songs on the album. It has a funky, jazzy riff and guitars that are similar to those in Undercover. Charlie, as usual, keeps the beat rolling and this is one of the highlights of the album.

15. Driving Too Fast- Like the song before it this is another rocker. A very good song but not as good as 'Cat'. Play it loud for best effect!

16. Infamy- The second Richards tune that works but the Stones used to close out their albums with songs that were magnificent, not just good. Moonlight Mile, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Shattered, Fingerprint File to name a few. Well, this is nitpicking. I like the song and it fits in well with the album.

I gave this album 5 stars because the album itself deserves 4 stars but I added one because I feel that for a band in their 60's this blows away almost or all of the rock music being released today by much younger bands. Yes, this is the comeback album Stones fans have been waiting for. It is the Stones doing what they do. Nothing more and nothing less-which is always a good thing. That is the key to A Bigger Bang. The Stones are no longer at the forefront of the pop audience. They are not trying to keep up with the latest musical trends on this release. They are not concerned with top 40 radio nor are they interested in breaking new ground. The secret here is easy-Keep it simple, stick to the basics, crank it up and rock and roll.

Biggest Bang Since Some Girls.......2007-06-20

A Bigger Bang is a great comeback by the Stones. Ron Woods slide on Rough Justice gets it off to arolicking start. It wont take long has good guitar.Rain Kept Falling has a Miss you vibe. Streets of Love is great. Back of my Hand continues the Stones great blues legacy. Laugh i Nearly Died is good blues too. The rock songs Oh No not you Again, Dangerous Beauty and Look At What The Cat Dragged In, make A Bigger Bang the best Stones cd since Some Girls.

I must say, the stones still have it in them.
As someone said before my, this is not the next best thing or the record to redefine music, it is just straight ahead good rock.
Man they are 60+ and listen to them ! Real musicians only get better with time... it's the public that stop listening really listening to what they are saying once they are not "pop" "mainstream" or young enough.
Listen to the record, yes it is a great record...
Oh one last thing, Sweet neo con, IMO is the best song on the album, music and lyrics, it stands on it's own as a great song.

"A Bigger Bang" is the Stones album I've been hoping for since 1983's "Undercover." This album contains only the core band with a minimal amount of outside musicians, unlike the extravaganzas on prior ones. It's great to hear the four Stones, plus a bassist and maybe a piano player, cranking out rock-n-roll just like the old days. This basic rawness is sadly missing on every album since "Undercover".

"Bang" shows that the Stones still have it, and that they can give any modern act a run for their money. I hope the Stones know what works and make their future albums along this vein.

This CD, along with the Stones 2007 Wall Calendar, made a perfect gift for my rock 'n roll sister. Perfect pairing. We are contemporaries of the Stones and its good to see the old guys still tearing the house down.

Let's face it: Most rap artists aren't interviewed by Political Affairs, a self-proclaimed "Marxist monthly," but then again, Boots Riley isn't your typical rap artist. The "raptivist" certainly doesn't mince words on Pick a Bigger Weapon, the Coup's first release in five years. (You may remember the Oakland duo's previous release, 2001's Party Music, with its original pre-9/11 cover shot of them blowing up the Twin Towers.) In 2006, Riley's acidic political and social commentary has never been sharper or timelier, and his keen sense of humor plus the fluid, soul-drenched beats (courtesy of partner Pam the Funkstress and a stellar session band) make it insanely palatable. The truly vital "My Favorite Mutiny," which also features Talib Kweli and the Roots' Black Thought, pulses with funk rhythms and punctuating horns while three of rap's smoothest spitters deliver the straight dope. Riley offers a radical history lesson on "Head (Of State)": "Bush and Hussein together in bed... billions made and millions dead." On "We Are the Ones," he warns, "we're the have-nots, but we're also the gon'-gets." The slow jam "BabyLet'sHaveaBabyBeforeBushDoSomethin'Crazy," with singer Silk E, is witty, seductive, and poignant all at the same time. After having seen them for the first time at the Montreal Jazz Festival, I had to run out and buy this album (got it yesterday). As the Editorial Review says, the beats are amazing and the political commentary especially poignant. Boots is as smooth as they come and the whole album is thoroughly enjoyable. I like listening to the Coup occasionally. But some of the songs on this album just aren't good. And I don't think that's the album, I think thats just the nature of the group. Don't get me wrong, I love the lyrics, and what the band stands for. but musically, compared to a lot of other underground hip hop groups, they just dont do it for me.

The Coup is one of the best ways to get aquainted with the Bay, with Oakland. Listen to any of The Coup albums - Kill My Landlord, Genocide & Juice, Steal This Album, etc. - what we are essentially listening to is a soulful, funky, clever, bold, uncompromising, satirical, often downright funny indictment of the streets of Oakland, of the toiling, underprivileged, communities of the world, and, perhaps most importantly, of the oppressive political structure - capitalism - that keeps the poor, poor, and the rich, rich. What has made The Coup one of the best and most consistent rap groups to ever come from Oakland, what has made them a benchmark of "conscious hip hop" everywhere, is their unique ability to draw from the diversity of Oakland, and not fall into what I like to refer to as the clichéd, suburban, granolaism inherent in most socially aware rap music. Boots taps into the history of Oakland: the poverty, the violence, the drug game, the pimping, the politics, and produces a unique sound well outside of anything corny like this. Where granola rap sacrifices good music for a (self-proclaimed) good message, The Coup is able to do both: make good, catchy, often danceable music with a good message. Not just music you can learn from, but slap in the trunk too. Unfortunately, this is not entirely true of Pick A Bigger Weapon. I found myself captivated more by Boots' content than the songs themselves. The production and overall catchiness of this album isn't really as good as it should be and has been.

What I mean is, c-o-u-p is really meant to be pronounced "coo", not "coop" (add an "e" to the end of the word and THEN it would be pronounced "coop" -- of course, then it would refer to a popular method of transportation). But I'm sure no one came to this page for an English lesson, so I'll say that Boots Riley (who really needs to do something about that `fro) and Pam the Funkstress' latest album Pick a Bigger Weapon is a nice alternative to all the other hip-hop out there right now.

I didn't know if they'd EVER have a new album after the original cover of their 2001 album Party Music depicted them blowing up the Twin Towers (a few months before 9/11, mind you, but it still wasn't the best idea). But at any rate, the best songs on this album to ME are "Laugh/Love/F***" and "Mindf***" (by the way, who forgot the EXPLICIT CONTENT sticker?). And I was upset at first before I realized that "Captain Sterling's Little Problem" is a parody rather than a blatant radio-friendly track. "My Favorite Mutiny" (with Talib Kweli and Black Thought) is another song not to be missed.

There are also a few political and introspective cuts on this album. While "Head (of State)" might be hard for some people to get into, "I Love Boosters" is a humorous telling of the real-life problem of boosting (FYI: if you don't know what a booster is, it's a person (usually female) that makes a habit of slyly stealing products and then selling them on the street). The ballad "Babyletshaveababybeforebushdosomethingcrazy" is also interesting, and before you get excited, no, it's not Boots singing, it's guest star Silk E's time to shine. And as my brother said, since she already made an appearance on "Laugh/Love/F***", the song doesn't seem out of place.

I also agree with my brother when he said that "A**-Breath Killers" and its surrounding skits ("Yes `Em to Death" and "Two Enthusiastic Thumbs Down") are unnecessary. But Pick a Bigger Weapon proves that Pam and Boots are still good purveyors of smart rap (for lack of a better term), so cop it.

One of His Best.......2006-08-13

If you become a Robert Earl Keen, Jr. fan as I have, you probably own most or all of his music. I would put this CD just below West Textures and Gringo Honeymoon, and far above some of his others. Amarillo Highway and Corpus Christi Bay are a great start to this re-release, and other highlights include the story of "Jesse" (that song is good once you figure out the story), Night Right for Love, Paint the Town Beige and Crazy Cowboy Dreams. If you are a fan of REK you will not regret buying this CD!

Arguably my favorite Keen disc, from back in the days when you could actually go to an REK show and hear him sing his songs himself. It's discs like this one that have made that impossible - now it's hard to hear Keen's voice over the crowd's singing. Both the crowd and Keen sing a little flat, and maybe a little off-key at times ... the best thing is that his unique voice only makes his songs better. Each track on this disc is listenable ... with more than half of them being superb Keen songs. "Whenever Kindness Fails" is the best this album offers, for me; its theme hits home ... one of those songs that makes you feel like an artist wrote it for you. "Amarillo Highway" is a great take on the Terry Allen original, revved up and stomping when REK sings it. The tale of long-haired Jesse is a classic Keen story, even better than "The Road Goes On Forever" (that surpasses it only in popularity). Of course, "Corpus Christi Bay" is on this disc ... along with "Crazy Cowboy Dream" and "Paint the Town Beige." Some Keen discs may have bigger hits. Some Keen discs may be less eclectic, more consumer-oriented. But this disc has more quality REK material than any of his others. This disc is a must-have for any quality music junkie. Buy it ... you'll see.

What an introduction to an enduring Americana legend!.......2004-09-03

This album was my first introduction to Robert Earl Keen, about 12 years ago. From the stack of years between now and then, I can see where this album is where he really found his voice, moved a little past "gosh I'm tryin' for country" and made Americana Music his own. His lyrics are funny, quirky, sometimes unsettling, and speak truely. "Corpus Christi Bay" is one of my deep all-time favorites, and "Paint The Town Beige"...well, anyone of a certain age can appreciate what he's saying.

His voice is a little raw, a little not-perfect, just like you and me. Try it, you'll be hooked just like I was.

I was realy disappointed with this CD. More than half of the tracks are songs or skits that aren't even funny. I am a big Chris Rock fan and I've heard many of the jokes on other albums. Even die hard fans should stay away from this CD.

The Stand-Up Is Great, the Skits and Songs Are Hit and Miss.......2002-03-08

It's unfair to rechristen Chris Rock as the New Richard Pryor, but if Mr. Richard Pryor has an heir to his throne, it is almost certainly Rock. On his third album (after the good BORN SUSPECT and the excellent ROLL WITH THE NEW), as he did with ROLL, he splits up the stand-up with skits and song parodies.

The stand-up is some of his best. The first two stand-up tracks, "Black Mall" and "Crazy White Kids," are among his greatest hits. Rock takes on such current events as Columbine ("'What music did they listen to?' WHO CARES?! What music did Hitler listen to? What was on his CD player?") and the Lewinski Scandal ("The President is a man, and a man is basically only as faithful as his options.") and talks about such timeless themes as homophobia ("There's no reason to be homophobic. Everyone has at least a gay cousin."), men having affairs ("It's the same two women: The one you love, and the one who loves you. One has the best...the other makes the best pancakes in the world.") and, yes, race ("There ain't a White man in this room who'd trade places with me, and I'm rich!"), sometimes profoundly, sometimes profanely, and always avoiding the cliches and stereotypes on which lesser comics coast. The only problem is the sound quality, which slides in and out, so be prepared to keep your finger on the volume control button.

As far as the skits and songs, Rock is a "Saturday Night Live" alumnus, and while he's one of the best of late, he demonstrates that show's biggest weakness. While the premises of his skits range from amusing to very clever, too many of them go on for far too long. His shorter skits ("ODB - W.O.W." #1, 2, 3; "Roger & Zapp," "Savion Glover") are hilarious, but some of his longer skits ("Nerd & Fly Girl," "Table Dance/Snow Flake") go on forever, long after they've ceased to be entertaining.

Still, his stand-up and his funnier pieces, especially "No Sex," "Me & ODB" and the divinely inspired ghost track, are worth sitting through his pieces that drag. And remember: There is no sex in the champagne room.

Bigger and Deffer--

Released in the summer of 1987 (sharing space with Michael Jackson's similarly titled 'Bad' album), this second LL Cool J LP was his crossover breakthrough, which also helped to make hip-hop music a mainstream phenomenon. Produced by the L.A. Posse (Dwayne Simon, Darryl Pierce, Bobcat, DJ Pooh) it's also one of the first examples in hip-hop of east/west collaboration. The album's opener and lead-off single, "I'm Bad" was gangster-tough without being overly explicit: Sampling both the themes from TV shows "S.W.A.T." and "Courageous Cat & Minute Mouse", LL basically declares himself the king of the hip-hop hill: "..The baddest rapper in the history of rap itself; not bitter or mad, just proving I'm bad; you want a hit, give me an hour plus a pen and a pad.." "Kanday" finds LL bragging in locker-room terms about his lady, and then he warns guys to stay away from hookers at "The Bristol Hotel". "But my Rhyme Ain't Done" is a blatant fantasy trip where LL interacts with everyone from He-Man & Mickey Mouse to George Washington, "But I wore a Kangol, not the fake white hair". He admonishes a jealous rival on "The Breakthrough", and gives his DJ props in the guitar-thrashing "Go Cut Creator Go" (with a clever Chuck Berry sample).

The biggest song on the album of course was the pioneering hip-hop ballad "I Need Love": over a simple-but-effective synthesizer-driven melody, LL pines for true love, despite being the object of desire for any number of groupies- "When I'm alone in my room, sometimes I stare at the wall, and in the back of my mind, I hear my conscience call; telling me I need a girl who's a sweet as a dove; for the first time in my life, I see I need love.." The closing song "The Do Wop" finds a way to blend doo-wop harmonies and funk rhythms. For those who pegged hip-hop as a fad at the time, they need look no further than "On the Ill Tip": 'The joke's on you, jack!'

Bigger and Deffer is one of the seminal Def Jam recordings that are just screaming for a deluxe re-release, with any available bonus material (like any 12-inch mixes, unreleased songs, or soundtrack/EP exclusives like "Going Back to Cali" or "Jack the Ripper", which technically belong here more than on Walking with a Panther.)

LL dropped one of the first hiphop quotables with I'm Bad!.......2007-04-24

Me and my homeboys from middle school was in a race back in 1987 to come up with the lyrics to "I'm Bad". The song was just mind blowing. That song itself has so many hiphop quotables in it. "My favorite lines are "You want a hit, gimme an hour plus a pen and a pad!" "Got a gold name plate that says: "I wish you would", "Even when I'm braggin, I'm being sincere", "I'm the pinnacle that means I reign supreme and I'm notorious I'll crush you like a jelly bean."
I'm Bad was and still is mesmerizing from beginning to end.

This album is a classic based on I'm Bad alone.

He's Bad.......2007-03-12

LL Cool J is regarded as one of the most popular rap artists of all-time, and few would argue. With his originality and adaptable style, he still remains popular to mainstream audiences after nearly three decades of performing. Although he seems to dabble too much in TV and Movies to concentrate on recording new sounds, he still seems to come out with mega-hit releases every few years. However, this album has to rank up there among my favorites, since it shows more of his versatility as a rapper than any of his other albums. After releasing more street-oriented rap albums, Cool J decided to adjust his style a bit and add a little flavor to his music releasing this album. "I Need Love" is a rapper's love anthem that's played over and over on any Playa's collection, and "I'm Bad" is a hit that almost every rap fan remembers. But, my favorite on this album has to be "My Rhyme Ain't Done". The song adds some sense of humor, along with a bit of a mockery on celebrities as well, which makes for an enjoyable rap song free of all the street-cred hype that many artists were seeking during that timeframe. "The Bristol Hotel" is another solid hit, which many listeners didn't seem to really enjoy until after several plays. Other enjoyable tracks round out this album, which should be one that you consider adding to your collection if you want to make your rap collection complete.

A very good work-----even though i am not a fan of rap, this album is great---funny, lots of rhythum, i think it is probably one of the best albums of rap and LL is terrific!!! and this from a 56 year old classical fan.

LL defies the sophomore slump.......2005-08-16

Though more predictable and less intriguing than RADIO, BIGGER AND DEFFER is an excellent follow up to a classic. This album was also a huge hit, peaking at #3 on the Hot 200 and selling Platinum. The production is much fuller here than the previous disc, but thankfully LL's commanding voice is never lost in the mix.

Two classic singles were scored from this disc, including the macho anthem "I'm Bad" (#84 Pop, #4 R&B) and the genuinely tender crossover hit "I Need Love" (#14 Pop, #1 R&B). In addition to the hits, BIGGER AND DEFFER finds LL at his best when he's attacking the more hard-hitting, "Rock The Bells"-like rhymes like "Get Down," "The Breakthrough" and (my personal favorite) "Ahh, Let's Get Ill." And with "My Rhyme Ain't Done" and "The Bristol Hotel," LL's wickedly humorous side (really only hinted at on Radio) starts to fully emerge. The mixing of genres on "The Do Wop" sounds a little awkward, but it's an interesting experiment (the type of thing LL would continue to keep trying).

On the negative side, the use of samples is much more obvious here than on the more discreet RADIO. The James Brown sample on "Kandy" works far better than it should, but the modified Chuck Berry sample on the lame "Go Cut Creator Go" was a bad idea from the beginning. However, BIGGER AND DEFFER unifies nicely as a whole and was a big chart success, blowing the notion of a sophomore jinx right out of the water. RADIO is definitely the place to start, but BIGGER AND DEFFER is another prime example of vintage LL.

I first checked this one out having heard Mr. Griffith on the Andy Griffith Show and was quite impressed with his singing on the show and knew this was probably a must have CD.

...Andy is SO very reverent on this that it could make your hair stand on end and that isn't a joke. This is just absolutely beautiful.

... Andy Griffith takes no delves into operatic or "contemporary" spiritual. In keeping with his Southern roots, we find him doing the old rugged hymns of the South such as "A Little Talk with Jesus" & "Somebody Bigger Than You & I". The only break with tradition is "I'm Gonna Write A Song".

The instrumental backing is clearly Nashville Sound oriented, but that should come as no surprise when you examine the fact Billy Sherrill produced this.

If you buy one CD this year, make sure this is the one. This finds a spot that ranks with the gospel recordings of both Hank Williams, Elvis Presley and Mahalia Jackson. It's a shame this one is not better known.

Surprisingly Inspirational!.......2002-02-19

Just listening to the first song on this album,"Somebody Bigger Than You and I", says it all. Andy Griffith's voice is surprisingly strong and is a shock to anyone who has only heard him sing folk songs on "The Andy Griffith Show". He also shows you he has a huge religious side to him. I'm surprised this album doesn't get more attention than it does. This album was released in 1972, after "The Andy Griffith Show", "Headmaster", and the extremely short-lived, hardly-heard-of "New Andy Griffith Show". After the last two shows listed flopped, Andy Griffith turned to mediums other than television, such as movies("Angel In My Pocket") and music, which obviously meant a great deal to him. He enjoyed doing this album so much that years later, after the long-running "Matlock" came to an end, he returned to the music scene again, recording "I Love To Tell The Story" and "Just As I Am". "I Love To Tell The Story" won a grammy. The well-known "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" is taken at a considerably faster tempo here, "Turn Your Radio On" is as lively and joyful as can be, and "I'll Fly Away" is just right. A must for gospel music lovers, and any Andy Griffith fan should look into it. Trust me, you'll love it.

This is not really a review, just a heads up to potential buyers that the second disc is not dual format. You will not be able to play the two new tracks on standard CD players or easily import them into mp3 players like ipod.

You can't always get what you want!.......2005-12-11

Perhaps I am ignorant concerning marketing, but I would have released this special edition cd first for $26, and several weeks later the regular cd for $13. I am a Stones fanatic, and bought the regular cd the day of its release for $13 (I think it's a really good album too!). Then, two months later they come out with this. Well, I'm sure the thinking was- Those Rolling Stone fans will buy the regular cd, and two months later will get the special edition. Well, a lot will, but I won't. If they had released both together, I would have paid the $26 for the special edition. From reading over the other reviews (and I agree)..... If for some reason you don't already have a Bigger Bang, I would certainly buy this one. However, I already bought the regular cd, so I'm not willing to dish out the extra money for some (probably well worth watching) additonal material and videos. Perhaps "they" know what there doing, but I think it's a disreguard for the fans. In the long run I don't see how they could have made that much extra money out of this. I would rate the regular cd at least 4.5 stars, so the same would go for this, but it ends up with 3 stars for the shi__y way they did the fans.

A Somewhat Bigger Bang.......2005-12-07

This expanded edition of "A Bigger Bang" is recommended, without reservation, to any Stones fan who has yet to buy their superb new album, released in September. That first edition of "A Bigger Bang" is packed with 16 new original songs on a 65-minute CD (also available as a double vinyl album). The Stones' new album reached # 3 in the "Billboard" Top 200 chart, but "Bang" has received very little airplay (despite a massive and well received tour intended to promote it), certainly not enough to nudge it into true big hit status. One must assume there are many folks out there who own a decent Stones collection but have not yet picked up the group's fine new album. As numerous reviews indicate, A.B.B posesses a vitality and authority doubters could hardly have expected; the high quality of the material, sense of committment and overall high energy level, make this one of the best rock albums of the year. As originally conceived and recorded ABB is remarkably lean - the four Stones sound re-invigorated (especially coming after the rather slight quartet of new tracks on 2002's "Forty Licks"), with occasional contributions from bassist Darryl Jones and keyboardist Chuck Leavell. But "Bang" is most remarkable for its directness, energy, and concision - quite a contrast to the expansive sonic experimentation (and cast of guest musicians and producers) of 1997's "Bridges To Babylon." "A Bigger Bang" is not a complacent work by the band. In fact, after 43 years one can see and hear the band still evolving. Mick Jagger plays guitar on nearly every track, plus keyboards and even bass (the latter a first). Keith Richards and Ron Wood may not display the rapport they once had, but both turn in terrific performances, as does Charlie Watts, who sounds unstoppable a year after his bout with throat cancer. The bulk of the material coheres, resonates, and rewards repeated listenings - if anything, there's a somewhat dark (occasionally darkly humorous) tone to the album, as befits the times we're living in.
As for the Bonus DVD, it contains two new songs, and both are marvelous, especially "Under the Radar." And Ashley Beedle's remix of "Rain Fall Down" is deeply funkly. I can understand fans' irritation, and even reluctance to re-buy a current album for a couple of new songs, yet for anybody else interested in a terrific new work by The Rolling Stones, the Bonus/DVD edition expands on a fine new album by a still great band, and is the best way to go, collecting all 18 new tracks issued this year (all but one - the bluesy charity single 'Hurricane').
As for the rest of the DVD, the other supplementary material is entertaining but slight: A rather brief "making of" ABB documentary, with studio footage, three videos, lesser odds and ends of the , and a somewhat brief 'making of' type segment are worth a view or two, but are hardly essential.
