The effort to categorize and document the history of electronic dance music has intensified over the past few years, resulting in countless CD compilations and several cinematic documentaries. The latest is Better Living Through Circuitry, and the soundtrack suggests an attempt to link the current sounds to the industrial music movement of the 1980s. Representing the old school are Psychic TV and Meat Beat Manifesto, the latter of which shows up with "Money for E," a 1987 track from their prolific (and arguably most interesting) foray into acid-house dance music. Although the disc is weighted down with label-affiliated B-list tracks from Keoki and Electric Skychurch, the inclusion of Roni Size's revolutionary "Brown Paper Bag" and Future Sound of London's classic "Expander (Remix)" lend the collection a solid air of credibility. Although trying to capture the essence of the electronic dance underground in a mere 70 minutes is an impossible task, Better Living Through Circuitry makes an enjoyable and interesting introduction. --David Prince

Decent compilation. Nothing groundbreaking. Your typical techno dance stuff. The annoying sound clips between songs brings this one star down. Not everyone is into the whole silly rave scene.

Great music, so-so sound bytes.......2001-05-05

I love the music they selected for this compilation, but I do have one complaint... At the end of a track, you'll find yourself listening to someone talking about the type of music or the scene... It can really throw you if you aren't ready for it, and doesn't work well when you've got a bunch of tracks from various CDs randomly cycling through.

A perfect look into the Digital Underground........2000-05-22

It's almost a shame that such increadible artists go unrecognized (with the possible exceptions of Crystal Method and Roni Size). Moonshine Music's compliation CD, Better living through circuitry, absolutely brings together some of the best dance artists out there and packages them all onto one CD. It's tough to pick stand out tracks, but the following are probably the most exciting to listen to:

Keoki's "Caterpillar" DJ Spooky's "Peace in Zaire." This is actually a remix of Sublime's "Doin' Time," created into a dance beat. Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" Electric Skychurch, "Deus" and of course, Crystal Method's "Now is the time"

If you do NOT know all too much about dance music, specifically electronica and techno, this CD is a must. Even for those of us who know this genre fairly well, it's an ideal compilation to bring some of the best artists together.

A great techno compilation!.......2000-05-05

I, once again, bought this album for Meat Beat Manifesto's new track, "Parts 1-4". While MBM proves to be outstanding once more, the other tracks on this CD are addicting. The same thing happened with the CD compilation Earthdance -- bought it for MBM, got a lot more out of it! I especially like others such as "Freaks" by Uberzone and "Endor Fun" by LCD (especially the little Speak & Spell effect at the beginning). And if you listen closely to the beginning of "Peace in Zaire by DJ Spooky, it sounds like a garbled Sublime track ("Doin' Time"). This is a great compilation for techno freaks or someone who wants to throw a great dance party. If I get a chance, I am also going to see the film that this soundtrack comes from, "Better Living Through Circuitry".

Lucid dreaming? .......2007-02-13

Oh, please! I guess it depends on your idea of dreaming.

If you enjoy dozing off with the electric blender on high, then you've gotta place this in your bedroom.

Seriously -- the musicianship is highly competent, and there is an obvious commitment to the entire production. But this CD is not dreamy.

The album title nails it: "Rhythmic FISSION -- digital revisions of classic trax."

A Dreamy Listening Experience.......2004-06-01

This music is ideal accompaniment for lucid dreaming...Some of the tracks are loud,fast, and flashy ("Chasing Bartok" track #1, "Machines" track #10 come to mind) while others are fragile and soothing ("Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito"). Any one of these songs would be a superb compliment to a movie soundtrack--they all have this movie-dream-type quality to them, whether the movie/dream is creepy, beautiful, sad, or just plain experimental electronic music. Tracks 12-14 are heavy on vocals: Track 12 is very similar to the enigma song "Beyond the Invisible", while "I would Kiss You" makes me think of Loreena McKennitt with a dash of techno-renaissance flair, and finally "New World" has its good moments, but sounds a bit Disney-esque. "Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito" are the best tracks on the whole album; they sound like the ideal Anne Rice movie soundtrack selections, with "Addio" serving for any goth-vampire-opera-or-nightclub scenes, and "Espirito" for any childhood flashback scenes (hey, that's just what it sounds like!)...

Wow! What an excellent historical overview of the string bass-an instrument that doesn't always get the attention it deserves. This anthology is a wonderful resource for my course about the jazz masters of the bass. Bravo!!

A Bass Classic.......2003-10-05

This album marked the begining of Bass 305's long number of albums to come. The duo hides themselves as being "BASS SYNDICATE" and others. I personaly love the the song "DIGITAL BASS". It was the first song that I heard from them.
It sounds so spiritual and electronic at the same time.
Even though Bass 305 sound's pretty much like Techmaster P.E.B., they pack quite good originalism themselves...

A sub-par Bass 305 debut..........2002-09-07

Bass 305's debut album, Digital Bass, isn't a bad debut album, per se, but it's marred by way too much hip-hop/rap influence unlike Bass 305's succeeding albums -which showcase more electronic bass and other sounds to create techno-bass music. Granted, the CD thumps and one can show of one's subwoofer with this album, but 305's later material such as "Bass The Future" and "Departure" are much more complex and refined.

Only Only recommended to a die-hard bass completist.

Do not buy this cd, the first two reviews said this is a good cd. NOPE. I'll tell ya the real about this cd. I believe this was 305's first cd, and I don't see how this cd was ever in mass production. While It does have a few decent cuts most of this cd belongs to a different artist. 305 got much of the material for this cd on Techmaster P.E.B's masterpiece Bass Computer. Any one who has both cd's can tell. If your looking for bass, you'll find it here. But you can find knock with any bass artist. I give this cd one star for biting Techmaster.

Not just bass, but MUSIC.......2000-10-30

I was 13 yrs old when I first heard of the concept of REALLY LOUD BASS. I believe it was my cousin, who was 17 at the time, who turned me on to the whole thing. I didn't even have a car, and my home stereo system was OK, but what I loved best about the CD was the musical variation present on the disc. Granted, it is limited to a few musical styles, there is some innovation which makes this CD more than just "booty bass." Get it!

i bought this cd at the mall after i noticed a few of the names on it. i was suprised to see the likes of origin unknown and ed rush & optical. it's not the best jungle compalation out there but it is still good. i would recomend it to anyone just getting into drum&bass as a starter to here a few good names. over all the cd has some very good tracks. it is on a heavy rotation on my cd listening list. buy and enjoy

...matters is the T-Power - Amber (Shy FX Extended Remix).

That's it, it's a god-like track from an artist who never got the credit he deserves for what he accomplished in the scene.

T-Power (aka Marc Royal aka Bass Selective aka Atomic Dog aka Potential BadBoy (?)) is the first Jungle artist who really created the best sound for a completely new genre. Light years ahead of any Jungle/Drum & Bass sound out there now (yes, better than any of those quote "big names" that are even on this album), if you don't know the name T-Power and you listen to this music, be ashamed, be VERY ashamed, and then go buy his sound.

Don't even call yourself a Jungalist or a D&B fan if you don't have anything by Marc Royal.

I was disappointed that this cd is just a compilation from the Earth series. Granted you can tell that the songs are remastered, but I was looking for new songs.It's a shame that there is no listing of the songs so that you can tell what you're getting. I guess it shows that I'm rather irritated, this is my first review.
