4 out of 5 stars What happened to Sole?.......2005-07-15

I know this album is old, but I was jamming to it in my car the other day and had to write a review. When this album first came out in '99 I really thought Sole would be the new woman to represent females in Hip Hop. It's been 6 years, and with the exception of hearing about her getting married to Genuine she has vanished from the public eye. Her debut album Skin Deep is not to be slept on. She is tough, but her femininity still shines through. She has her own sound, and did not see the need to try to sound like anyone else. I remember when I first heard her on JT Money's track Who Dat (which is on her album as well) I was impressed by her voice. She also did not let her beauty hinder her tough edge one bit. In fact I would say it motivated her to not be just another pretty face trying to be a hip hop artist.

She has some good flows. She let's you know she is not to be messed over, and unlike some other female hip hop artist did not resort to being downright nasty, and trifling. I'm really disappointed she has not released another CD, but hope she will eventually. I still run Skin Deep, the CD is really good.

5 out of 5 stars sole is tha bomb.......2004-06-21

underrated, sole is a good rapper and i really look forward to her second cd. sole is unique she came out hard when she came out in 99. and she set herself different then other female rappers which is cool. her cd is cool as hell once you get into it it will have you bobbing your head and relating to what she is saying. the interlude is funny and the song cool as hell. so hopefully anyone reading this review will give sole a chance.

5 out of 5 stars I just didn't know!!!.......2002-07-17

If had known that this CD would've been so hot, I wouldn't have waited so long to get it. I am shocked that this didn't get more airplay in my area (DC, when I bought it)! The lyrics are great and so are the beats. After listening, you can't deny that Sole is talented, she has a really great voice for delivering dope lyrics. Although I like all the songs on this album, my favorites are #3,5,7,9,10,11...well the list goes on, I can't really pick just one. If you buy this CD and really listen to the lyrics, you'll have the same problem.

5 out of 5 stars her flow saved her own album.......2002-05-23

but tricky setwered was wrong for the beats.she would sound much better with some one like dj uneek,or someone of that caliber.her production is the only thing that slowed this album down.get a better producer sole.

2 out of 5 stars Man,git you a producer and some beats........2002-04-04

Here's how I'm gonna set it off. I think Sole tha best female rapper, tha only prollem is,she need ta be found.then she might get some money ta hire some1 ta git her betta beats. Her lyrics is good, but tha beats [stink],she needs more beats like on "Iy Yi Yi", then she would have dat flow. If, Like me,at first the only track you hear is "Iy Yi Yi", then you think that this chick Is HOTT!, but if you hear all the rest, they [stink] cus the beat just ain't cuttin it.So I rated this joint 2 stars, I would give it 2 and a half, but ain't no halves so woo woo.
If you planning on gittin this c.d., I wouldn't recommend it,I would git tha single fa "Iy Yi Yi", unless you can't find it and you willing ta pay ...fa this piece of junk. Peace, holla back>...

5 out of 5 stars ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19

One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.

Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.

I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.

The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16

This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

Over and over the fleshtones have reminded me how great it is to be alive-- this record is no exception and rocks hard. "smash crash", "i'm not a sissy", and "dig in" are pure joy... and do not miss out on seeing this legendary band live, they transcend rock n' roll and will alter your state of conscious and change your life-- forever.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate modern garage band rocks like a hurricane........1999-02-23

Believe it, Daddy-O. These guys may be more than 20 years into their career, but they kick it out with more passion and power than just about any band on the current garage scene. This album rocks like nobody's business with such should-be hits as "I'm Not a Sissy" and "Laugh It Off." Great stuff...and you MUST catch them live if they come to a club near you. They are nothing short of AMAZING!!!

4 out of 5 stars Their best album if fifteen years!.......1999-01-19

I used to ask Peter Zaremba to let Ed Cobb produce their material but the Fleshtones have out-frugged the master. The songs are often retro in structure and content but the tone betrays a world-weary savoir-faire. The production is upfront and invigorating: a muscle car, but only one hand on the wheel. To quote the bard, "Light fuse and roll away."

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of 98'.......1998-09-03

They finally did it! The Fleshtones have been making decent records for years but More Than Skin Deep is one of their best. I would describe it as: slinky, raw, fun party-garage-rock. Perfect for a House Party! Super Rock at it's finest!

I want my money back. This cd shold carry the warning "May hurt ears and pocketbook" in my opinion. All the songs sound the same. I've seen these guys live, and the only word that comes to mind is "blows." Go to an Uncle Silas concert, or better yet, a movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the world's best new bands........2001-08-13

I am a musician from Austin, TX. I heard about the band from some industry friends. They told me to go and see rocks future. Well, I did, and I believe. The Show I saw July 27 at the Metro in Austin, gave me Chills. You have to smile during the set, very fun band to see Live, and the musical performance was one of the best I have seen from ANYONE. I bought the CD "Skin Deep" at the show, and Love it. No SONGS SOUND THE SAME. It IS a rolercoaster ride of music. They fit all genres of rock, and they don't fit any. One day the world will discover them, this is a band for rocks future, with possibly the best songwriter to come along in awhile. I think "Skin Deep" is an outstanding collection of music, and "resident hero" is one of the best rock bands in the World.

    1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2001-07-13

After the wait, people expected alot from this second album. Resident Hero surpassed all expectations. With tantalizing vocals, wonderful guitar and superb drums, this album is a non-stop rollercoaster. Perhaps the biggest thrill is listening to the perfectly written lyrics. Buy this cd, but do not let anyone borrow it-- you will never get it back.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Little Collection.......2004-03-02

Sometimes, these budget priced Motown Legends Collections can seem haphazardly packaged, though you can sometimes hear songs that are very hard to find. This collection by the Temptations includes 2 big hits "Just My Imagination" & "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" along with another smaller hits "Its Growing" which is one of their more underrated singles from their classic period. We are also treated to the beautiful, slow version of "For Once In My Life" sung by the late Paul Williams. The song is very nicely orchestrated and not overdone at all. The remainder of the songs are from mostly late 70's albums, when the group wasn't having a lot of chart success. The gorgeous "A Song For You" is included and is a definite treat. At least 3 of the songs were taken from their 1976, hard to find "Temptations do the Temptations" album ("I'm On Fire" "Let Me Count the Ways" & "There's No Stopping"). "I'm On Fire" is a nice quiet storm ballad. "There's No Stopping" is an uptempo dance number which has somewhat silly lyrics, but is very entertaining. Other tracks like "Darling Stand by Me" and "If
I Don't Love You This Way" are nice as well. The criticism that could be made about the 70's songs is that they don't sound that different from what the current groups like the O'Jays, Spinners or Harold Melvin & Blue Notes were having great success with at the time. Of course, while those groups are all very talented, they were all very much influenced by the music from Motown's classic 1960's period. Basically, if you are a Temptations/Motown fan and aren't up to shelling out big bucks for the Emperors of Soul boxed set, this gives a good overview of some of the group's lesser heard material.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2000-05-06

THE Temptations Sound Great Here.Especially on The Great Just MY Imagination. That Song Alone is a 5&timeless.Their voices Are very strong. The Music is Smoking as well.

4 out of 5 stars MOTOWN LEGENDS:JUST MY IMAGINATION-BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP.......2000-04-25

I MUST SAY WITH ALL HONESTY THAT I LOVE THIS CD. SOME OF THE SONG WERE NOT THAT FAMOUS, HOWEVER, IT DOES'NT DEMINISH ANY OF THE VOCALS. THERE IS A SONG ON THIS DISC CALLED" I'M ON FIRE (BODY SONG) I HAD NEVER HEARD THIS BEFORE AND ONCE IT WAS INJECTED INTO MY SOUL IT WAS AS GREAT OR EVEN BETTER THAT SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE ONE'S. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL TEMPTATION LOVER'S

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant split from two overlooked bands........2004-02-24

It's criminal that both The Burial and Skin-Deep aren't household names for lovers of '80's era British Ska. Except for some cuts on compilations, this is the only time I've found material by either of these bands. There's an abundance of catchy tunes on this disc, mostly working in the vein of a potent combo of Northern Soul, Punk, and Ska.The Burial even get a little folky in some of their songs. Think Billy Bragg with more of an attitude, especially on "Just Above My Head", the stand out track of the whole CD. For their part, Skin-Deep lean more into the Ska line of things, but with unusually introspective and even melancholy lyrics. You won't find any of the generic "rude boy" or "pick it up, pick it up" silliness here that so often plagues the genre. Great stuff all in all. I only wish there was more.
